We now have inline comments and a not-very well sorted out Menu system.
Thoughts welcome.
Please report problems and experiment on this thread.
Cheers, Jo
PS: As new etiquette for the nested comments, please resist the temptation to queue-jump threads by just replying to the first comment (except for this thread).
PPS: Some entertaining comment-gremlins turned up (instead of trolls).
Well, we had nested comments on this site for a few hours 🙁
Hi Jo, congrats on the sucessfull migration to the much improved new format and congrats to the support team who achieved it with no discernable impact to us users. Maybe they can give Qld Health some tips on appropriate and effective system development and cutover methods. 🙂
10
One minor suggestion if it is possible, to make it more apparent to users, can the template be modified so that reply appears as a button rather than a word, this would highlight the inline function to users.
10
Ooo very cool, is this an auto function that added this from the other thread or was it just one of the mods. If it was auto, then I say again very cool and great filter creation.
10
Nooo. Paul, I moved the comments manually. I don’t think there is filter in existence that could do that.:-)
10
Yeah, I’ve tried writing a filter like that for the Teamspeak Forum I run but gave up after nearly 200hrs of trying, way beyond my programming ability, it was easy to create the key word filter for each thread but laborious to have to do for each new thread. That concept was based on voice type and voice recognition software, I can imagine that it would be exceptionally problematic for a standard blog format.
10
Thanks Paul. Not a bad idea.
10
Hi Jo – Not replying to you but Paul above your comment?
There’s no reply word after the date? How does he do that?
10
Methinks you spoke too soon. :O
The word on the street is… the problem at Qld Health was primarily the staff in the department who signed off on tests to say they had done the tests and that the new software the contractors had delivered passed those tests, but without ever actually performing those tests to actually check. “Close enough for government work” as they say. 😉
I refrain from making any comparisons between Qld Health and our present predicament.
10
A curious thing happened, I moved the comments from the last thread and Baa’s nested ones became single comments. Try again Baa 🙂
Jo
PS: Hmmm. And no — I have no idea why my new comment has jumped ahead of his previously nested ones that appear below this?
10
Totally devastated I am. Going to bed now 🙁
10
So I got the thumbs down eh? 🙁
10
Couple of things to check here, so this isn’t me shamelessly linking to my own Posts, but just to see if linking works OK, both for my Screen name link, and also for the Post link..
This is a 4 Part Series on China’s Three Gorges Dam for general interest.
Three Gorges Dam.
And Joanne, both work in ‘Preview’.
I’m too scared to see if ‘wallpaper’ works, nyuk nyuk nyuk!
Tony.
10
However Joanne, I seem to suspect that there may be a problem with the Time function, as this comment was Posted after all of Baa Humbug’s Comments, and it jumped to Comment Number 3 instead of Comment 9.
Tony.
10
That would be actual time where the Commenter is based, and not the time where the Blog is situated if you can see that point.
Tony.
10
Baa Humbug’s location might be of assistance here, and if it’s NZ, then it is later than the time here in Queensland, so while the time show’s up at Joanne’s location as being later than my original comment, (check the time stamp) his actual time is a lot later.
Tony.

In my browser the nested comments don’t display their comment number at all, which is problematic when I wish to identify a comment that is not the one to which I’m currently replying.
You can imagine it happening like this….
I respectfully request comment numbers be displayed even for nested comments.
As a programmer myself I imagine the most probable explanation for why they aren’t showing is that the template for a nested comment is different to the top level one, but someone’s forgotten to alter the data reference to the comment number, or forgotten to allocate one in a post commit trigger. Okay I’ll stop my back seat driver act now.
10
It looks like only the original comments get a number, which kind of makes sense.
10
Yes, it would be good if comment numbers could go #1, #1.1 (for a reply)
but I don’t think there are any plugins that can cope with the complexity of comments appearing in the middle of the chain. Let me know if you find one.
10
@Jo:
Your style sheet can handle the numbering, assuming your html template is well structured. See §12 Generated content, automatic numbering, and lists.
For a template engine such as Smarty, numbering nested comments in the html output is trivial.
cheers,
gary
10
Further to above, maybe this plugin for WordPress will work with your site?
http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/gregs-threaded-comment-numbering/
From the screenshots it looks like it does what you want but it should be tested on your system.
10
I love your illustration, of the problem. So true to life 🙂

What’s going on? I’m trying to reply to something from MattB back in July, and now my comment has popped up here!

Rip Van Brookes strikes again.

“There is a fifth dimension beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space and timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man’s fears and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination. It is an area we call the Twilight Zone.”
10
Link works fine.
10
But my reply was not nested as it should be.
10
Yes, the mystery of Baa’s comments is interesting. I moved them from the last thread, and they should appear near the top here, but they were nested there. Something in the moving process mucked up the order?
10
Testing, 1, 2, 3, testing …

I have just noticed that the reply time has not been adjusted for Daylight Savings – bang goes the theory that the local PC provides the time.
10
Great new site upgrade:
A. Just noticed that if you click on RECENT COMMENTS and hit the name – you go to that persons site – you have to go to the Subject area to go to the comment? I didn’t mind going to Tonys site 5 times and Baa Humbugs 8 times. I’m a slow at this!
Tony has already covered this in a different way!
B. Also Tony is correct – the timing is not correct?
C. Baa Humbug should be taken out the back and given a “Jolly Good Thrashing” for all his KWH wastage over the last ????? minutes – Is time going backward – he started at 6.03pm
then went to 5.29pm ??? TARDIS owner maybe???
D. Images can only be loaded through an http:// address – can you insert from computer stored images etc?
Now I forgot who I replied to???

congrats jo. want to test out the new design by documenting something. for about two weeks there has been an Occupy Wall St protest going on in NYC. the MSM totally ignored it. they were protesting the bailouts of the bankers and what they perceive as the greed of the top 1% in the US. none of the videos, statements made over the two weeks that i have seen have mentioned AGW/CAGW/CLIMATE CHANGE.
however, if u search “occupy wall street” + “global warming” now that the MSM has been forced to report the story and the protest is spreading, GLOBAL WARMING becomes a major issue all over the MSM, seemingly a figment of the imagination of Associated Press’s Meghan Barr, who was in NYC covering the Clinton Global Initiative (LOL) that was on at the same time. remember this one i posted recently:
20 Sept: Forbes: AP: Meghan Barr: Ex-President Clinton: Green movement needs money
Former President Bill Clinton said Tuesday that success of the alternative energy movement is hampered by a lack of financing. His comments came as world leaders attending the Clinton Global Initiative expressed fears about rising seas at his annual philanthropic conference…
The ex-president’s three-day Clinton Global Initiative for VIPs with deep pockets began Tuesday with a frank discussion about addressing global climate challenges, co-hosted by Mexican President Felipe Calderon and South African President Jacob Zuma…
http://www.forbes.com/feeds/ap/2011/09/20/general-us-clinton-global-initiative_8690023.html
Meghan is concerned enough about “CC” to tweet the following:
21 Sept: Tweet Meghan Barr: Mexican President Felipe Calderon says he’s concerned that the world’s economic woes are overshadowing the need for climate change talks.
http://twitter.com/#!/meghanbarr/status/116160332858277889
next story was possibly the first printed MSM coverage, and it got carried widely and started the “GLOBAL WARMING” meme:
21 Sept: Denver Post: AP: Meghan Barr: Protesters vow to camp near Wall St. indefinitely
What, exactly, they are protesting is somewhat unclear. When asked what they are fighting, they gave a variety of responses ranging from Wall Street to global warming…
http://www.denverpost.com/business/ci_18946300
a more accurate report by ABC’s T.J. Winnick:
2 Oct: ABC America: TJ Winnick: Occupy Wall Street Protesters: We Are Americans
Their causes include everything from global warming to gas prices to corporate greed, and the Occupy Wall Street website says organizers took their inspiration in part from the so-called Arab Spring demonstrations that have tried to bring democracy across the Arab world…
In fact, some tea party members have been down to Liberty Square to lend their support. Both groups are fed up with the status quo.
Still, the protesters insist they are not all Democrats nor Republicans.
“We’re Americans,” said Justin Brown.
http://abcnews.go.com/US/occupy-wall-street-protesters-americans/story?id=14652698
it would be extremely odd if an anti-Banker protest would be promoting CAGW action, which the bankers dream will rake in trillions for them!!!

Hi Jo,
Looks good so far. Just two points.
– the indention seems to occur without ‘bracketing’ around the responses, i.e. a box running around all the responses to that comment, this box helps the eye track what comment belongs to what when scrolling.
– also vertical space consumption seems quite high, looks like the “thumbs up/down/report this” is taking up a horizontal row instead of just floating to the right. means you don’t see many comments per screen full.
Let me know if you want any help.
Keith

A lot of skeptic sites I’ve recently gone to have migrated from WordPress to Joomla (or always ran on Joomla) because it has so many more features and is powerful and flexible. You might want to consider that since your site is so popular and it would give you the opportunity to add features and new items with ease (and power). Third party comment systems for Joomla leave WP’s in the dust and are generally free or donation-ware. I also believe there is a simple way to migrate your mySQL database from WP to Joomla without a lot of heavy lifting. You can learn more at joomla.org.
10
Joomla is a Content Management System software(CMS). Where you can have blogs, forums and other pages in a single place.
While WordPress is a Blog software.Just for blogging only.
They are not the same set up.
10
If anyone still has the old page “Comments and News” open in a tab, could you screen capture it and send it to joanne AT joannenova.com.au. The new code is broken, and if you refresh the screen it will probably collapse. I want to send that old page image to the web master. 🙁

Post note: Hmmm. I posted this at 11.40 perth time, but it writes it up as 1.40am (East coast time), yet strangely boosted it forwards up the column?. I posted this as a separate comment after my reply to #23 below (which didn’t reply to #23.)

Hi Jo,
Haven’t really viewed the new site that much. That was mostly because I couldn’t get in using my subscription bookmark. When I tried the old Google link directly, I was able to see that the address has changed, and re-subscribing fixed things.
Maybe this was simply latency in DNS propagation, or maybe Firefox’s over enthusiastic caching. Either way, It may be handy for folks to mention re-subscribing if they have had trouble connecting.

At some time today the comment Preview feature stopped working.
It *was* working with threaded comments last night.
I guess everyone has noticed that but nobody said it here yet.
10
Just a check – preview wasn’t working a moment ago.
Checking…
No, not working on this post either, at least not for me.
10
Hmm, posting order has gone funny. The ‘preview not working’ comment inserted itself btw #26 and #27.
As far as I can tell it is a time-stamp issue. While my PC correctly had my local time as 6:12pm, the timestamp on the post shows 5:12pm.
Ah, other problem is the comments are sorting on time but not date, so my “October 4, 2011 at 5:12 pm” has pushed in before Baa’s “October 3, 2011 at 5:29 pm”.
Yum, reminds me of all those pilot plant hassles. Best wishes Jo, looks good so far even if right now you’re having to use up cans of bug spray on the HTML.

I can’t give any thumbs up yet? They don’t register.
Best of luck Jo? I’m no help with IT, I’m afraid.

While your site was down, the Nobel Prize in Physics was given for observations that the rate of expansion of the universe is acceleration:

Accelerated expansion of the universe probably means that neutron repulsion is the source of energy that powers the cosmos and causes the universe to expand, in addition to being the main source of energy in the Sun, but the stories imply that the accelerated expansion confirms Big Bang” and “Dark Energy.”
In fact, neutron repulsion negates the need for:
a.) A “Big Bang” origin of the universe,
b.) “Dark Energy” to keep it expanding, and
c.) “Oscillating solar neutrinos.”
If government “double talk” and manipulation of data and observations ceases, serious investigations of climate change will need to reconsider the role of rotating, superconducting super-fluids in
d.) Iron-rich supernova debris [1], and
e.) Expulsion of material and magnetic fields from the Sun by the Meisner effect [2].

Thanks to everyone for your help. We had hiccups on the first day because the memory exceeded the allotted storage apparently. That’s been sorted. I’m looking into numbering…thumbs up etc, and comment preview too. Because I’ve upgraded three years worth of theme, it means we can now run newer plugins, but possibly broke the older ones.
The oddities on this thread with replies, don’t seem to be happening on the newer thread, so I suspect a one-off glitch with the memory exceeded or whatnot (me moving comments).
Gee aye, I’ve fixed the hidden tally. It had reverted to the default settings. Thanks. No I don’t want to hide that many comments either.
Thanks for your input, and your patience.

It appears comment indexing has disappeared. Maybe Openwire is addressing the nested comment numbering. Maybe?

agree… apart from reading and thinking about a post, replying is the most important aspect of reading a post and is much more important than the date and time.
10
Well these comments are nested though my later comments, at #64 to #68 are not.
10
hi you might want to check whether the search function is working to your liking… I can’t work it out.
Also… the subscribe to posts and comments at the top of the page are not very visible. Perhaps highlight (maybe white shadow or moving elsewhere)?
10
also… why is my most recent comment #48… I wonder where this will be?
10
Jo,
I don’t know how other people find the nested comments, but I feel they do not work well. I’d prefer to see several threads remain active and allow substantial comments. Several threads can remain active if the “recent comments” is clearer as to which thread and who is commenting on it. See the right pane for an example I think works well: http://bravenewclimate.com/2011/07/06/carbon-tax-australia-2011/#comment-137878

I am posting from a freshly installed OS and browser, so there could be no problems with a previous cache that had not been cleared.
