10 million pageviews, 1.6 million visitors — new media reaches an influential audience

Admire the power of the Internet. Since I started blogging we’ve had 9,999,619 pageviews. Minutes to go…

UPDATE #1: 10,000,075 pageviews. Thank you.

UPDATE #2:  Extra special thanks to the volunteer moderators who work anonymously to keep things on track, who deal with the malcontents, complaints, and unpublishable bile and my evolving strategies. They made the 10 million pageviews possible and the 180,850 comments.  They are spread over three countries and every timezone, and have been helping for 2 – 4 years each. They are a source of wisdom and advice. I would not be able to do this without their help.

Statistics show 1.67 million unique visitors from 225 countries have come to the site.  From the extraordinary comments on Monday’s thread many readers are highly qualified in Engineering, Geology, Physics, Law, Medicine, Accounting, Architecture, Agriculture, Chemistry, Ecology and Education. From personal contact I know readers also include three national cartoonists, several members of the Australian and British Parliaments, State MPs, staffers to elected representatives, IPCC lead authors, journalists and at least six well known columnists. Readers include a professional full time carbon trader and several major investors, at least one of which I know has made quite a lot of money shorting renewables in Europe. I feel honored. humbled and grateful. Thanks to all who have supported me this year, to make this work possible. I still owe many of you a personal email.

There is a smart class of movers and shakers who influence events and markets. Even though the mainstream press may relentlessly report only one side, the other side of the message is getting out — may the best arguments win.

There is an audience here of around 5 -6,000 influential and independent thinkers a day.  Those who only follow the old media are missing a quiet revolution.

      surely impeachable offense?

      One of many …

      PeterB in Indianapolis

      Sorry, no.

Telling the UN to cover up something like the current lack of global warming would hardly rise to the level of an impeachable offense for a US President. Perhaps it SHOULD, but it just doesn’t. It isn’t as if the President is actually lying under oath or committing some actual crime, he is merely advocating that the UN cover up inconvenient data so that his environmental policies will not be questioned (any further than they already are).

Dishonest as all hell? Sure. Impeachable? No.

        Peter,

Under present conditions I agree, not impeachable. But I want to remind everyone that an impeachable offense is so loosely defined in The Constitution (“Treason, Bribery, or other High Crimes and Misdemeanors“) that literally anything the House and Senate can agree on by the required majority vote (simple majority in the House, 2/3 in the Senate) is an impeachable offense. And this is not my opinion but the opinion of a number of lawyers specializing in constitutional law. Thus the power to impeach is completely on the basis of politics for any practical purpose, not law.

A high degree of sanity and plain old caution have always prevailed in both houses and impeachment madness doesn’t get out of control.

I would suggest that a far more compelling grounds for impeachment exists in the president’s manifest disregard for The Constitution and the laws of The United States, which he walks roughshod over on an almost daily basis, as do many in his administration (the Attorney General for one). For these sins I would gladly vote for impeachment in the House or conviction in the Senate if I could.

I should have added that The Supreme Court, by their own decision in the matter, cannot review or alter the result of the Senate’s vote. So the Congress (a political body) reigns supreme in the matter.

Outside the stellar ranks of the Great and Good, we humble spear-carriers can only look on in admiration at Jo’s and David’s achievements. Overshadowed only by WUWT, Daddy of all the Sceptic blogs, JoNova is rightly recognised as a forum where debate is fierce, dissent is tolerated and the science is supreme. Well done Jo and David, and the rest of you hangers-on, Fling Funds!

Great sales pitch! Stratfor should be calling you any minute to arrange an interview.

I wouldn’t mind a stint at OSINT myself, but I figure they expect people to actually know a thing or two about the topic area being researched so as to know the most likely keywords, patterns, and sources to query. Darn.
Being paid to web surf… cushy job if you can get it. Ahh but you already know that. 🙂

Joanne I do apologise but I don’t know how to contact you except like this. This comment is totally off topic but a piece in todays Australian may have escaped your attention. It’s opening paragraph is “MYSTERIOUSLY, once the election was over, an OECD report with a Treasury official’s input emerged indicating the carbon tax would need to be 10 times the EU rate and twice the $38-per-tonne level posited by Treasury to allow Australia to meet its 5 per cent carbon reduction goal. –

It is a very interesting piece for those who are sceptical of the official line on the carbon tax

    Okay then,

Go now to the column down the right hand side of Joanne’s blog here.

Now, scroll down to the bottom of that column, and right at the bottom is a small yellow(ish) icon with a number in it, and right now 5.10PM Wednesday, that number indicates that currently, there are 63 people visiting this site ….. right now.

Click on that icon and when the page opens up, it shows you where those visitors currently are at this site.

The bar chart along the top shows number of visitors at any point in time across the last 24 hours.

However, on that same page there, scroll down a little and now and click on the small heading titled Maps.

When the map opens up, you’ll immediately see small blue pointers, and after a second and a half, a lot of small red pointers will ‘drop’ onto the map.

Those red pointers are those persons currently visiting this site. The blue ones are visitors who have been to the site in the last (well, whatever the current setting is, and here it looks like the last hour)

Note the visitors from Northern Europe, and even a couple from Mainland China.

    Tony.

That doesn’t work for me. I do not have the yellow box with a number. I have a yellow label with the word “Statistics” in it, but nothing that will let me link to a separate statistics page.

      Isn’t that odd?

That’s what comes of being paranoid. You have to right click on the page and go to the NoScript tag. Allow as much of the scripting as you feel secure with. Repeat until the yellow box with a number appears. After clicking on the box and opening another tab repeat the NoScript procedure.

p.s. I only know this because of MY paranoia.

        Eugene,

        therein lies a slight anomaly.

Although I live here in Rockhampton, the ADSL2+ plan that I have with my server means that I am not on a regional plan as are most here in Rockhampton. I specifically asked when I came here to be on the same plan as I was on when I lived at my previous address, on Queensland’s Gold Coast, where that ADSL2+ was in fact available.

Once I was connected, I noticed that I was not registering as someone from Rockhampton when I viewed a similar Map. I traced it back and instead of showing up as a visitor from Rockhampton, I now appear as a visitor from Brisbane, almost 500 miles away, the home base for the plan I am currently on.

Now that situation applies to me, so while you look at a Map of visitors like this here at Joanne’s site, and do not see the name of your home town appear there, what does appear is the name of the base for your individual server, whatever plan you are currently on.

        Tony.

Jo, glad to see you mention well “Qualified”
I am happy for you to add my name (which you have from emails) to any list but, at present, I still wish to use a pseudonym because I have a close relative who is well known around the world in her field and appreciates grants for her research which may save many lives in future.
I will give some of my qualifications BE(Chem), MBA (mineral industry includes some geology), registered professional engineer RPEQ, FAIE (Aust Inst of Energy), FAusIMM
Maybe with the new government the Research Grants Board will be restructured towards giving grants for projects that have a useful outcome rather than social “engineering”
Congratulation for a great blog- one of the ones I have regularly visited for the last 4 or 5 years.

    scaper...

A great place and thanks Jo for your persistence.

It is surely a humbling experience to be on the same page as so many eminently qualified people. I’m just a scaper that has a trade and horticultural background.

One good thing that has come out of this global warming rubbish, the left (collectivists) have united the others (individualists) and I’m of the belief that this would not have eventuated otherwise.

Never in my wildest dreams, thought I would speak in front of a few hundred people at a rally in Brisbane, convoy down to Canberra, fly our flag standing just behind the stage and meet so many good people in the battle for common sense to prevail.

We are now in the ascension phase. I ponder what the collective of individuals could achieve in the name of science, the environment and humanity when this AGW distraction is put to rest.

    Truly mind boggling. ADVANCE.

    151

    • #

What scaper says here nails it really.

Now note how that in the Headline article Joanne mentions that she’s clicked over 10 million page views from 1.6 million visitors.

What that tells me is what scaper alludes to.

All we ever hear from the mainstream is the one side of this so called now ‘closed debate’.

It would see to me that there are a vast number of people who really DO want to find out things for themselves, without just blindly accepting the one point of view on offer.

Without Joanne’s site, that would not be the case, and the number of visits, and visitors, says that what she is doing here is in fact something that is not only needed, but is a necessity.

This is a vast juggernaut we are standing in front of, and even though we may think we are succeeding, something of that size, with so much clout pushing it will still take some slowing down. Too many people have too much to lose here.

On Friday, the IPCC releases its latest. Now a fearless body such as the IPCC is should just release it.

However, and I personally think this is damning.

They have to check first to see if what they do have to say is OK, and note the cries coming from all points to water it down.

That is the telling factor in this.

      Tony.

They have to check first to see if what they do have to say is OK, and note the cries coming from all points to water it down

Has been so for a long time. Climategate emails demonstrated this unequivocally. The 16 year hiatus in the Global Temperature Anomaly has the warmista pointing in all directions at once … very satisfying 🙂

The relentless propaganda will not cease, though. Deeeep ocean heat is the next stop, despite the Argo buoys providing no empirical evidence for this

[The reason I do not identify myself on these websites, despite long ago achieving BSc, MAppSc (UTS), is to protect my clients – activist greenies are enamoured of the secondary boycott. One of my colleagues lost his client list (on their part, reluctantly) through this activity, wherein his clients were targeted and forced to engage someone unknown to the websites. Useless to point out the bullying tactics when your mortgage is in peril]

Scaper, In total agreement. The whole affair has bought into the light, for me and many people I know, the fact that the environmental movement is not about saving the planet but about the implementation of an anti capitalist/individualist totalitarian Marxist agenda to steal our national sovereignty and our rights and freedoms from us. This is true for all environmentalist agendas particularly the “sustainability” cult. This comes from the other are of scientific voodooism “Conservation Biology”. I get the same rage now when I hear the terms “sustainability”, “Biodiversity”, “Ecosystem”, “Species extinctions” ect ect that I get from hearing any global warming alarmist BS.

It is surely a humbling experience to be on the same page as so many eminently qualified people.

That’s how I feel. I have no qualifications. When I first heard about AGW, my instinct was ‘scam’, but of course I couldn’t back it up with facts. I started looking around on the net, and found some lone voices drowning in an ocean of white noise that was emanating fom the propagandists. Anthony’s WUWT was a great place to start, but a tad too scientific for the likes of me. However, he linked to this site, and I popped in for a look. I’m always amazed at the number of well informed folk that comment here. Jo is, of course, brilliant, but I get so much from the various commenters. Lurking here has made the science so much more accessible.

In 21st century democracies, knowledge is an essential currency for wise decision-making, whether it be the risks associated with nuclear energy, the latest ethical implications of medical research, or the role of human activities in changing the Earth’s climate. Those societies whose populations have the best scientific understanding often make the wisest decisions…
Because of the complexity of much of modern science – and climate science is the quintessential example – it is easy to misinterpret, either deliberately or unwittingly, what the scientists are carefully and accurately saying, in their own, somewhat obscure way…
Some straightforward mathematics, based on the fundamental physics of the climate system, show unequivocally that most of the world’s fossil fuel reserves will have to stay in the ground if we are to stabilise the climate for our children and grandchildren.
But even in the here-and-now, communication of climate science has a critical role to play. Extreme events are already changing as a result of a warmer and wetter atmosphere, and to deny that simple fact unnecessarily increases the challenge that our health system, emergency management authorities and urban and regional planners face in dealing with weather extremes…
The demise of the Climate Commission is not a good sign for the future of our democracy. In the long term, shooting the messenger never works. The overwhelming support for the Commission’s work from the Australian public shows that the need for clear, authoritative, nonbiased information on climate change is stronger than ever.

    – A Roman walks into a bar, holds up two fingers, and says, “Five beers please.”
    – How many surrealists does it take to screw in a light bulb? A fish.

While on the topic of humour… I tried looking for comment #1,000,000 which the blog passed back at 5:03pm 5 March 2012.
I cannot locate an actual comment #1000000, presumably it happened on some older thread or was taken by a spambot.
The nearest I can find is #999998. Warning, that comment links to a video of probably the most offensive thing George Carlin has ever said on stage. Given our recent election it’s still oddly appropriate, remembering Gillard was from Wales and Abbott is from England. ;-P
Do you realise the last time we had a PM that was NOT born in Australia was Billy Hughes in 1915? Homebrews for 95 years then two foreign imports *nearly* back-to-back. Bloody suss if you ask me.

just read some criticism of Bill McKibben for his participation in the following. apparently, tickets for the conference ranged from $600 (student rate) to $1200 each, with a discounted price of $259 per night for the Fairmont Hotel. so much to amuse on this page – video of McKibben with David Blood (from Blood’N’Gore) & the head of a Calif State Teachers’ Pension Fund on investor strategies for transitioning to a low-carbon economy. the should-be-disgraced Peter Gleick on water, the political award winner & the impressive sponsors’ list. ah, if only sceptics could tap a few of the $$$ on display here:

    Ceres Conference 2013
In May 2013, nearly 600 business leaders, investors, environmentalists and policy-makers gathered at the Fairmont Sanfrancisco for Ceres’ annual conference to accelerate the transition to a sustainable economy.

Bob, I didn’t really know what a blog was… I was not a regular follower of any at the time. I broke the rules (you’re supposed to blog every day I hear). I blogged every 2 – 3 weeks, but only when I thought I had something to say. I didn’t know how to moderate comments, and ended up spending hours in threads. The commenting crowd grew and seemed to like that. I should have made quite a few of my comments then into posts — and I should have made some of the commenters comments into threads too. There were some great contributions. But no, I had no idea it would be so consuming, almost addictive.

the carbon cowboys pause….but have not given up as yet:

20 Sept: BusinessGreen: Will Nichols: EU carbon markets set ‘to be oversupplied until 2027’
The European carbon market is likely to remain oversupplied until 2027 even if the EU adopts stricter emissions reduction targets, analysts have warned.
Thomson Reuters Point Carbon says the 2.5 billion excess carbon credits likely to be in the emissions trading scheme (EU ETS) in 2020 will not be fully eroded until allowance prices start to rise dramatically in the mid-2020s.
Prices in the market are currently around €5.5 per tonne of CO2, which is well below the €40/t level most analysts agree is needed to drive large-scale low carbon investment…
Point Carbon does not expect prices to breach double figures until 2023. However, after that date the effects of a 2030 target to reduce emissions across the EU by 40 per cent will start to bite, alongside a lack of access to international offsets and renewable energy growing to make up 30 per cent of the EU’s energy mix. This 40 per cent target is likely to form part of a package of climate policy proposals set to be announced by the European Commission before the end of the year, although the UK has proposed raising it to 50 per cent.
Carbon allowance prices are predicted to rise from €18/t in 2024 to €30/t two years later, before climbing to €66/t in 2030 as companies approach their mandated emissions caps…
“Even though it is likely that more ambitious policies will be put in place over the coming years, we think carbon prices will essentially remain at single-digit levels … up to 2020,” said Stig Schjølset, head of carbon analysis at Thomson Reuters Point Carbon…

Depends on whether Google’s visitor ‘location’ is supposed to tell you the country or the map position.
It’s all done by IP geolocation assuming the location of IP blocks is pre-registered.

Antarctica is not a country it’s a continent that’s been carved up for administrative purposes. In theory someone accessing your page from McMurdo Station would show as being from the USA, versus someone surfing the web from Casey Station showing as an Australia visitor.

Vostok station is physically inside the Australian-claimed sector of The Land Down Under Yes Really Down Under Yes Even Under Australia. Again I presume the comms from Vostok are sent via satellite to some Russian network node and from there out to the Internet, which means from Google’s point of view it will look like the country where the Russian Internet gateway is located. That could be Moscow / Russia, or perhaps some friendly country located closer to Antarctica such as Chile, just depends on where they send web traffic.

Congratulations Jo. Your website has gone a long way to informing those in cyberspace of the absurdity of the now failed Theory of AGW. The mainstream media has been a puppet of the “Warmist Propaganda Machine” for too long now but fortunately there are signs now that those “Alarmist AGW Storylines” are starting to recede, public opinion is changing, and the reality striking home that us Homo Sapiens in fact have had little impact on Earth’s Climate. This realization unfortunately has come too late to save the “fast tracked de-carbonised EU Economy” – a text book example of economic self destruction.

Congratulations Jo. Please add me to your list, a geologist/palaeontologist now retired [BA(Oxon), PhD (Bristol)].I have followed the AGW debate since 1988, when initially alarmed when confronted with the proposition of AGW while running a General Studies Course in Environmental matters at UNSW at a time when mining/engineering was anathema to the Arts faculty that supervised the course. I found the internet writings of the late John Daly (before blogs were invented?) a great inspiration and source of criticism of the AGW thesis that I could use to effect in my teachings. I have followed the debate ever since and regard your work as a continuation of Daly’s pioneer efforts. I am sure he would have been extremely proud of you.

    ROM

Congratulations Jo and you run a good ship here.
I find the fact that you have reached ten million views at this point in time [ and the real big Gorilla of the Skeptic sites, in fact all climate related sites, Anthony Watt’s WUWT has just passed the 150 million views and is now at 161 million views. No reflection on you Jo as Anthony had the population base to start with ] rather interesting as it seems to be right on the cusp of a major shift now under way in the science of the climate and environment, the politics, the public attitudes towards the global warming catastrophe meme and the end now starting to appear and in sight of the craziness of the energy deprivation, hypocritically as always, demanded of society by the alarmist global warming cultists.
This shift in sentiment, after a slow build up since Copenhagen and Climate gate, sort of just appeared, just seem to ooze into existence over the last year past.

Some happenings which probably presage the unfolding of the future for the CAGW meme.

1 / The IPCC after 15 years of no statistically relevant warming is in crisis over how to handle the “hiatus’ if it is that and not the start of a long cooling period.
as the old timers use to say; They are running around like chooks with their heads cut off.
    [ which chooks will do for quite a lot of seconds in those circumstances }

2 / Paper after paper. all peer reviewed if one is fanatical about this increasingly doubtful and seemingly corrupted science paper winnowing process, has suddenly started appearing questioning nearly every aspect of the claimed consensus catastrophic climate warming science.

3 / From the above, the absolute certitude so evident in so many alarmist pronouncements and in the activists and alarmist statements, actions and calls for action and severe penalties for anybody who disagrees with them is suddenly starting to fall on an increasing number of quite deaf ears in the populace.
And some in the populace at large are starting to give the two finger salute to the alarmist and activists statements in the media; Suzuki anybody?

4 / Politically the repercussions of this change in public attitudes that has had a long gestation period, are only now starting to appear in the democracy’s
elections . Australia currently being the poster child for the political backlash against the extremism of the CAGW alarmists.
But it goes a bit deeper than even that.
The greens or watermelons here in Australia were cut back percentage wise from about 11 % of the primary vote at the previous election to their long time levels of about 8% of the primary vote. But as the man says” there’s more! ”
The German greens who held huge political influence in Germany and are the root of Germany’s rapidly increasing energy disaster at present unfolding were also cut back in last week’s German Federal Republic’s elections which Merkel won again, to about 8% of the vote.
It seems that at best the greens natural political base only comprises at the moment about 8% of the primary vote across nations.
A drastic thinning of academic ranks as economies tighten world wide could see the Green’s vote drop markedly from this current percentage.

5 / On energy, THE only means by which the alarmists can enforce and impose their cult dogma onto the populace at large in a democracy through the colossal waste of resources in subsidising the so called renewable energy systems is now being recognised right across western world as totally unaffordable,[ the Chinese, Indians and Russians didn’t need to be told this ]
Also the quickest way of taking money from the poor and giving it to the rich.
So renewable energy is right now in Europe, heading into a major dead end wall that has already occurred in some countries and is on the point of doing so in most other european countries as the subsidies imposed from above are stopped and rolled back as the politics of the economy start to create a potential collapse situation in industry right across Europe due to the excessive and constantly increasing costs of energy.

Spain has removed most of their renewable energy subsidies ; ie they are about broke but will now recover.
Poland has removed all renewable energy subsidies
Ireland has gone some way towards this.
The Dutch are in the process of cutting back on renewable energy subsidies
The Norwegians have just canned permanently their immense and increasingly expensive and increasingly unaffordable ] experimental attempts to extract and sequester CO2 back into their depleted North Sea gas and oil fields.
And if Stat Oil of Norway couldn’t get their CO2 sequestering systems after some billions of dollars research and practical experimentation, to work then there is no chance that anybody else with less resources and less places to sequester the CO2 into will ever be able to sequester CO2 in any quantities at any sort of economical cost.
The UK is on the cusp of a major energy disaster with the UK Labor Party just announcing that they will, if they get elected next time around, freeze energy prices.
The down stream consequences you might like to read for yourself here

6 / And now the latest shift in the attitudes and CAGW politics spells real trouble for the advocating and alarmist CAGW scientists.

Roger Pielke Jr, definitely not a skeptic but plays his own fiddle. His blog is well worth a regular read.

A difficult question for the climate science community is, how is it that this broad community of researchers — full of bright and thoughtful people — allowed intolerant activists who make false claims to certainty to become the public face of the field?

Via the GWPF site, another European climate news and skeptic research group with an excellent reputation .

The Globe and Mail; THE CLIMATE’S BIG PR PROBLEM

Global warming’s credibility problem is not the deniers’ and the skeptics’ fault. It’s the fault of activist scientists, Al Gore, and the IPCC. They’ve cried wolf too much. They’ve vastly overstated what the science “says,” and treated anybody who is the least bit doubtful as the enemy.

It’s not helpful that so many of the policy solutions devised by politicians and technocrats have been ruinous. Carbon trading schemes in Europe, vast solar subsidies in Spain, costly green energy investments in Ontario – all have crashed and burned. Now the backlash has begun. The new government of Australia, once known as a green leader, has killed the carbon tax and abolished the climate change commission.

Yes Jo! You have made a huge contribution to the changes that are underway, changes that are foretelling the failure and ultimate collapse of the Great Global Warming Swindle and we will all be the beneficiaries of yours and many other skeptic bloggers who had to turn the other cheek so many times against what was pure spite and sheer viciousness on the part of the more fanatical elements of the global warming cult.

You are hitting one of your high points on the way to greater things I believe, at a critical historical cusp in the history of the whole fiasco of the global warming catastrophe cult that will provide future historians and social scientists with untold treasures on just how an entire planetload of people could be convinced by the claims of a handfull of inept and not so truthful so called climate modelers at their computer consoles and without ANY proof of any sort whatsoever, that the world was heading for an inevitable and flaming Argamendon.
All due to mankind’s supposed sinning against the plane by injecting some more of a very minor greenhouse gas into the planetary atmosphere where it provides the basic plant food that feeds the 7 billions of humanity on this planet.

    Here ends the sermon!

Nice post ROM – thank you.

And a big salute of thanks to Jo and her team….where would we be….

I would argue that the activists themselves were and are still being hijacked by the cognoscenti, those in the know with vested interest that have serious money to gain from all manner of changes in the energy market, and in particular, to a price on carbon dioxide. The cognoscenti KNOW that the Trojan Horse of ‘Save The Planet’ is a compelling meme. It is also politically attractive. The activists are unwitting drones in the main.

It all unravels as the inconvenient empirical data clashes with the increasing personal cost justified by modeled alarmism. Indeed, this attracts entirely the wrong sort of attention…namely, scrutiny.

…and suddenly, the whitewashed sepulchres began to stink.

Like many here I am in awe of the time and effort you put into this blog Jo, and am personally grateful for it.

I know it has made a difference to the debate. I also know that unlike Tim Flannery you haven’t had the Government throwing money at you with cushy part time jobs and covering your office, staff and travel expenses.

You haven’t been paid nice retainers and superannuation by taxpayer funded Universities. And despite all the claims, you are not funded by the fossil fuel industry!

Also unlike Tim Flannery you don’t have the ABC and main stream media falling over themselves to encourage the public to make donations to your privately funded public education science site.

So I would take this opportunity to remind others who are as grateful as I am for your work, that you only survive on contributions which can be made at the ‘Tip Jar’ at the top right hand side of this page.

All accolades to you, Jo, and to David, hard earned and well deserved. Vision, strategy, leadership, honesty, objectivity, inclusiveness, transparancy, tolerance, humility, understanding, persistence and above all, a principled stance maintaining a core focus on the science. These are values that people with a strong value system appreciate, respect and honour, as they reflect liberty and freedom of thought and expression. Well done.

This contrasts to the stance seen in much of society today, by those who choose politics and personal gain before principle, who seek to control the behaviour of others built on a facade of untruths, and seek to make everyone pay for their idea of utopia. Opinion and understanding is turning, thanks to your personal efforts and sacrifice.

What you bring to, and provide opportunity for, is dialogue and exchange of ideas for >1.6 million visitors (and growing); an informative and refreshing alternative to the MSM political realm, to help distinguish fact from fiction and principle from propaganda. One could surmise the number of enlighted thinkers who have shifted from a warming attitude to a knowledge base in climate science, would be in stark contrast to those who have shifted from your site to adopt the AGW meme at “propaganda central”. Poor trolls, they must be feeling more uncomfortable, like a shag stranded on a rock as the “consensus tide” goes out.

Very praiseworthy achievement Jo! As someone who’s been reading and posting here for nearly 5 years now I must loudly THANK YOU for the effort you have made towards truth by exposing the mistakes, errors, manipulations and politics behind AGW. Lets hope that with less than 5 years more effort we’ll all be able to look back at the whole “experiment” and declare it finished. More, lets hope we humans have learned enough to prevent any other abuse of science and it’s manipulation for political gains.

A great pat on the back is deserved by all the regular writers here, a list that is too long to type. I’ve wondered what has become of some of the fine folks that we haven’t heard from in a while. Life takes it’s course over 5 years it is sad to imagine that we may have lost a few of them…….

Also I’d like to thank the trolls for their efforts. We all know how hard it is to persevere when things aren’t going well……..

Lastly, Kudos to the people behind the scenes that help Jo. May they continue to find satisfaction and the continuous renewal in fortitude necessary to persist.

Congratulations on a marvellous achievement. If there is a downside it is that those British MPs who have not studied the global warming issue are unlikely to move beyond the first sentence or two. One wishes one could force peer reviewed papers to be read but that idea is of course preposterous.

What was I thinking?! I was distracted today, not expecting to hit the tally so soon, and researching for another post that I have to get right, so I posted this quickly and with a major omission. Forgive me …

Congratulations Joanne, efforts like through your blog have transformed the scientific exchanges, interactions beyond the tainted peer reviewed articles. Being a retired scientist myself (mathematics and biology) I find the science politics interactions (e.g. Stockholm 2013, IPCC AR5)very deplorable. Science will suffer. Politicians stay.

As someone mentioned previously, Joanne’s blog is second only to Anthony Watts’ blog; and even given the fact that the internet is global, Anthony has a much larger “home base.” I’m not sure what the population of Australia is, but if success is measured by the ratio of the number of views to the number of residents in the blog owner’s home country, I think Joanne might just be ahead. And as good as Anthony’s blog is (and it’s very, very good), the USA political establishment is still full bore (boor?) behind (C)AGW. Australia’s last election shows a change in the political wind of OZ. Jo’s role in that change may be small, but it isn’t insignificant. GO JO and DAVID, the best is yet to come!

Curmudgeon? Naw. A bit crusty, perhaps, but not ill-tempered.
Anyway, while I have been given the papers to use letters after my name from 3 universities I learned most of my Earth science because of teaching introductory classes of physical geography to over 5,000 students at 2 other universities. Then there is MV’s “lifetime” of additional qualifications.

Very well done on all your efforts Joanne. Without you at the heart of the blog writing a number of long postings every week this number, plus reading through the comments, this would never have been achieved.

One measure of ranking is the Alexa Traffic Rankings

      Joannenova – 76,154
      ClimateAudit – 89,452
      Wattsupwiththat – 10,676

      RealClimate – 157,102
      skepticalscience – 80,937
      desmogblog – 158,483

Of course, popularity does not mean anything. It is substance and debate that matters. The Skeptics provide far more than the dogma of the alarmist blogs. Which is why they get more visitors. Even Steve McIntyre who posts relatively infrequently now, is ranked far higher than the regular-posting desmogblog.

As the hours tick down to the UN-IPCC climate report, all the strategic PR leaks to sympathetic media have been done, and there seems to be a quiet, ominous pause in the climate wars, a “hiatus” if you will, before the on coming storm.

And now even uber alarmist Reuters is reporting that IPCC climate scientists are lamenting a yet to be published but already out of date report…
A blockbuster every six years is no longer really helpful,” said professor Myles Allen of Oxford University and among the authors who contributed to an IPCC summary of the findings that is due for presentation in Stockholm on Friday.

Many experts instead favor more frequent and targeted reports, for instance about droughts, floods and heatwaves in the preceding year, to see if climate change is influencing their frequency or severity.”

      LOL around here. Thanks.

A trasmogrification of the two sides of the climate debate is taking place

And it all happened so subtly and so quickly that nobody saw it happening until the change was nearly complete as the formerly “skeptic” duck and the “alarmist” crocodiles swapped masks and places.

But hopefully not as far as swapping the nastiness of alarmist’s past attitudes.

what an odd choice for a CAGW sceptic site?

25 Sept: National Geographic: Brian Clark Howard: Does “Global Warming Pause” Debate Miss Big Picture?
Prominent climate scientists say that discussion misses the bigger picture. The suggestion that global warming has stopped, says Richard Alley of Penn State, is “nonsense.”…
Global warming skeptics have seized on the news of a potential pause. The skeptical blog Jammie Wearing Fools wrote, “Fifteen years, no warming, yet we’ve endured nonstop hysteria in that time, with skeptics derisively called deniers, among other pejoratives. We’ll be waiting even longer for the apologies.”
He’s certainly right about the last point. Gavin Schmidt, a climate scientist with NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies, told National Geographic that focus on a global warming pause over the past 15 years is a “misplaced” distraction that misses the big picture. He said, “The IPCC and the issue of climate change is not about the weather next year or the next five years; it’s about the long-term climate change that we are engendering.”
Schmidt, who has not directly contributed to the IPCC report, added, “We know we’re changing the climate. We’re very confident in that, and not just temperature, but also pressure, rainfall, ice changes, shrinking of glaciers, and many other factors.”…
Schmidt said people should avoid getting distracted by such noise, and should instead focus on the bigger questions raised by the coming IPCC report. Chief among those is what policy makers will actually do with a document that voices concern over climate change with even stronger language than before, and with greater resolution on predictions about global sea-level rise.

    Considerate Thinker

It is nice to see things turning around, even though the rent seekers of global warming now seek to circle their wheel less wagons as they defend their diminishing circle of influence. The ABC, David Suzuki, Tim Flummery, and his tax payer fund guzzling co conspirators now seeking sympathy and cash from the church of global warming believers and gai worshipers!! It is over for them, but they still want the cash and a platform to perform. Can someone anyone, the media, scientists or their victims tell them to simply “Piss off” in direct to the point Australian vernacular and ask them to take Cook and his performing troop anywhere else but Australia. They are an embarrassment. Lewandowski left and got his snout in the trough in the UK before it all fell apart, perhaps he was reading the tea leaves and did a timely POQ, to “greener” pastures. Then we can set about undoing some of the damage they did, yes to science, and also to the reputable climate scientists who stood up and challenged their nonsense only to be viciously smeared by those self same rent seekers.

Time to bring in the John Daly Australian award for scientific excellence in recognition of his work.

Well done, Paul and the Galileo Movement!

Rang Malcolm the other day because haven’t seen his parents and family at the Brisbane IPA events. Was concerned for Malcolm’s wellbeing but he was just interstate fighting the good fight, coincidental.

Off topic somewhat. I am concerned for the children that are being indoctrinated by the education system. Was somewhat sceptical at first but now believe it to be true.

Evidence? Well it was tried on my fourteen year old daughter!

Last year she was set an assignment on comparative electricity generation options. It was set out to favour renewables against the nasties, she recognised the subtlety over the years and it was enough!

Said to the teacher concerned that she will refuse to do said assignment. Was sent to the headmistress and engaged in a heated debate that ultimately led to discrimination and vilification.

Was called into the school and was drawn into a heated debate that resulted in the eventual changing of schools. Obviously, her reputation of being not one to be spoon fed rubbish preceded her and the victimisation continued to the point of verbal warfare which not only resulted in exclusion from that school but the refusal by other schools to enrol her. Denied the right to be educated!

Took my complaint to the Qld Minister for Education that offered to veto the last refusal of enrolment but I declined the offer. The only options are home education or distance education, commencing next year.

These warmists are definitely indoctrinating our children and I see no clear strategy of fighting this and fear for the young minds.

And my daughter wants to go to university? That thought sickens me.

      60

You are a bloody, honest to God hero scaper. Your daughter will grow up to stand head and shoulders above her peers not only on the basis of her academic achievements which she will no doubt attain, but also and primarily on her ability at fiercely independent thought. You are teaching her to respect her own mind and to find her own truths. I’ve had similar experiences to yours but your integrity takes the cake. I salute you!!

Both are a breath of highly informative fresh air – and yes, where I was curious about some points, I found them to be correct on cross-checking.
Whilst on the subject, another book (American, and the first one I read after Al Gore’s cleverly crafted propaganda) was ‘Unstoppable Global Warming’ by S.Fred Singer and Dennis T. Avery – a most enjoyable and thought provoking ‘read’.

With the IPCC, we are probably dealing with the biggest scientific fraud in History since this paper: 1981_Hansen_etal.pdf (published in ‘Science’). No wonder people like me (BSc(Eng) ARSM PhD DIC), highly experienced scientists and engineers with 40+ years hard won international experience are reacting.

As for this paper, the first GISS modelling paper, Para 2; the claim that CO2 blocks IR in the range 7-14 microns (two small bands at ~ 10 microns) is wrong. The correct 15 micron band would only cause 1.2 K surface temperature increase for no change of OLR spectral distribution as [CO2] doubles; it is also untrue.

Para 4; the 33 K ghe claim fails to account for the loss of cloud and ice albedo if ghgs were taken from the atmosphere, giving 43% SW energy increase: real ghe ~ 11K; 3x positive feedback wrong from the start.

This passed peer review hence this IPCC mantra is shown up to be ‘Believe us because we conned you in the past.’. In reality CO2 climate sensitivity is probably <0.1 K.
