UPDATE: The Who-wants-to-be-called-a-pariah argument has been wheeled out again in July 2015, see Forget the climate — Spend billions to stop Australia being called names like “Pariah” and “Denier”
According to the Guardian, Australia is almost a Climate Pariah TM, and owes the world an apology for voting to repeal the Carbon Tax.
What chilling effect, I wondered, did being a pariah have on international tourists?
According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, in July 2014 as the Carbon Tax was finally removed, tourists voted with their feet … and flocked to come. A record 573,100 visitors arrived in Australia from all over the world. Year on year tourism from May 2013 – May 2014 grew by 8%.
Pariah status it appears, may count for Guardian and NY Times columnists, but not so much for the rest of the world.
Josh Bornstein of The Guardian says Australia is seen as a dirty polluter. The Axis of Carbon!
“This is how the New York Times responded to the scrapping of the carbon price scheme:
At a time when president Obama is seeking emissions limits on new and existing power plants, and when many scientists are arguing for major reductions in fossil-fuel use by 2050 to keep global warming within manageable limits, Australia – among the world’s highest emitters per capita of carbon dioxide – has chosen to become an outlier.
“Slate went further, condemning the “rapacious policies of the current government”. In an article headed The Saudi Arabia of the South Pacific, it told its readers how Australia became the dirtiest polluter in the developed world. Strictly speaking, both publications are wrong. Australia is not alone; it constitutes one half of the Canada-Australia axis of carbon.
The “rapacious policies of the current government” are evidently not too much of a turn off. For short term visits, the top ten groups of citizens came from New Zealand, the UK, Malaysia, Singapore, China, Hong Kong, Korea, India, USA, and “other”.
Similarly international student enrolments grew 10%. Chinese, Indian and Vietnamese parents were keen to pay big dollars for their offspring to learn in a pariah nation.
Even Bornstein admits skeptics are having fun:
Prime minister Abbott once famously described climate science as “crap”; he typifies a discernible demographic trend in his country. For white men aged 50 and over, climate change skepticism seems to be our new national sport, perhaps even more popular than golf.
Jealous Josh? Join us, it sure beats propping up a dying religion and defending a tax that was supposed to change the weather.

Good on ya Aussie. Keep up the good work, showing the rest of the world how not to be a lemming. Cheers from over the ditch.

I’m happy being a Guardian Climate Pariah.
I’d better make sure they know that.
100
It gets worse. Some pacific islander “warriors” are now paddling over here to blockade Newcastle in protest.
Points for originality for inventing a new impact of global warming:
“If climate change is not stopped we will lose our cultural activities. This is the message that we must remember. If not, Vanuatu will be nothing more than a wasteland,” he said.
So it will still be above water, then?
Now don’t get me wrong, the people of Vanuatu are probably the nicest and most generous people you will ever meet, especially to tourists, but there is a flip side to their culture.
Prior to a huge tribal feast, one of Vanuatu’s cultural activities is tying pigs up to wooden racks and then beating their skull with a large club until they die. Pig skulls being fairly sturdy it seems to take about 30 seconds of beating. The pig’s screams can be heard for quite some distance. Is this one of the “cultural activities” they feel is worth preserving?
Because if that’s endangered by CO2 emissions then tell the Novocastrians to throw some more coal in the furnace.
The contrast with western butchery couldn’t be more ironic. In large scale pig abattoirs the pigs are typically herded in batches into an automated enclosed booth that then gasses them so they pass out and are therefore unconscious well before the final slitting of their throat. The gas used is… CO2.
If only Vanuatu could learn to tame CO2 instead of fearing it.

Because hypercapnophobia lobbying groups are like Stephan Lewandowsky papers: can’t change their name as data comes in.
120
I shake my head…..
30
Give them a little break… it’s really tough to make a pressure vessel out of palm fronds and coconut shells. Here in the States there were tribes that were so in touch with nature that they hunted buffalo by starting grass fires and stampeding the herds off of cliffs into dead end canyons… leaving piles of mostly wounded animals at the bottom of said canyon. They could only get to the ones at the edges to kill and butcher… the rest died a long, slow death. Another wonderful tradition lost because those evil Europeans colonized North America. At least the buffalo hunters in the 1800’s tried to kill their prey quickly.
Neither group gets my vote.

Not only is Australia a “Climate Pariah State”, it is a vast country a great distance from anywhere else. So any foreign tourist visit is not eco-friendly compared to staying at home or visiting neighboring countries.
But people visit Australia because it is a welcoming country, with plenty of places to visit and the English language as a bonus.
330
From the quoted article:
… highest emitters per capita … What?
That is because Australia does not have the same population density as India or China.
170
And totally neglects to mention that Australia is a NET CARBON SINK !!!
260
And that is a BAD thing …
40
Are you allowed to say that? Lol
10
And a lot more of us can afford to by those pesky vacuums.
10
Doubtless the usual suspects are fothing at the mouth in Komment macht Frei(Which I can’t see, maybe it’s gone subscribers only). For those outside of the UK, the Grauniad (So called due to its prediliction for mispelling, is the loss-making lefty-luvvies’ paper, kept afloat by being the only place the BBC published its job adverts.
220
Lefty publications seem to be financially unwell, which is strange as there appears no end of green-socialist-lefty-luvvies piling in the comments on all manner od stories supporting the left and howling indignation at the right.
Ooooooh, that’s the answer…
As in every other greeny-lefty-socialist-luvvie enterprise their supporters believe that they are entitled to share for free as long as dirty capitialists foot the bill.
Dirty capitalists wont invest in loss making publications.
410
With the possible exception of the occasional dodgy share issue prospectus.
100
I suppose a prospectus is classed as a publication.
50
The glossier they are, the higher the risk. Corporate con-artists don’t do cheap, especially with other people’s money.
80
Didnt Maggie define Socialism as “spending other peoples money”?
90
The Guardian should be apologising to Australia, and the world, for its part in continuing to promote a discredited theory as fact, and disseminating fear to advance a political agenda. This is the reverse of genuine investigative journalism – simply a leftist propaganda rag.
240
The most obvious explanation is that its the same vocal-activist-minority-morons over and over again.
(If you must know, a standard tactic of these Leftie activists is to portray themselves as bigger than they really are. They want to make you feel like you are all alone. The objective is to make you give up by causing you to think its all hopeless and their way is the only way…I suggest you read the book “The Rules for Radicals”. This is their guidebook!)
In reality, most people don’t read or watch Leftist horse manure. They get sick of the delusional BS being sprouted out and they turn OFF! This is FACT.
=> This is why Fox News owns MSNBC, CNN, etc in audience ratings over in the USA.
=> This is why Fairfax media is in long term financial strife.
=> This is why Lefties hang out at taxpayer-funded institutions like the ABC.
=> This is why Gillard had to halve the price of her book BEFORE it was released to the public.
=> This is why a conservative leaning radio station in Sydney is most popular. (2GB radio).
There’s two distinct things about Leftie Activists:
(1) They are full of $hit.
=> All their ideas FAIL in the real world. The Utopia they promise, never pans out. Its Dystopia instead!
(2) Because of (1), they don’t produce or create anything of economic value. They only know how to break and tear things down. (Because its easy to do so!)
=> Which is why they HATE capitalism. They can’t compete against real producers! Everything they touch goes to hell in the long term!
The general public falls for the BS in the short term. But when they realise its hurting them in the long term, they will dump Lefties like a sack of crap. We saw this with Federal Election 2013. The Americans will experience this with their mid-term elections as they will punish Obama for his BS. (Democrats will do and say ANYTHING to lay it on the Republicans).
You see, all this “climate pariah” nonsense and name calling is a Leftie’s way of whining after they have LOST! They really are children at a mental level! They may have physically grown up, but they have a mental maturity that is equivalent of a teenager going through puberty! This is why everything is acted via emotion, feelings, petty name calling, and theatrics! This is why they balantly lie without care or consequence! A mature thinking adult does NOT behave like this. But spoiled, entitled teenagers do!
When you throw facts, analysis, and real world data at them; it doesn’t work and they respond like children in denial!
You want to know how to mess with their heads or when they call people names and labels?
Enjoy the label they give you! Receive it with a smile! Joke about it! Leftists hate it when you are happy and prosperous! Wear their labels they give you like a badge of honour!
And when they start rambling on nonsensically about Conservatives, Social Justice, Social Inclusion, Capitalism, Climate Change, etc…Just start making this noise.
=> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d1WcxRaMmIM
It drives them up the wall!
The one thing you should never do is remain silent. When we give up, they win. Always keep questioning them. Always point out their lies. Always hold them to the standard they try to impose on others. Just note and observe the way they respond. Do they continue their BS and act like they can get away with it? Keep pushing. Push just enough for the public to see who they really are!
Eventually, you come to realise Leftism is a political philosophy entirely dependent on Lies, Fraud, Corruption, and Deception. It doesn’t know how to create anything of real, tangible value, and substance. It cannot be honest about what it is. Leftists cannot be honest about who they are. They MUST paint a picture about themselves to the public. A public mask. Because if they are honest of their REAL intentions and about themselves, NO ONE would support them.
100
How can the Guardian see Australia as almost a pariah state for getting rid of the Carbon Tax, when the vast majority of countries in the world don’t have one? Nor are there any pseudo-carbon tax equivalents at anywhere near the magnitude of it.
But then again, Australia will at some point become a pariah destination for many tourists. Paul Murray Live some weeks back showed the Carbon Tax having raised some $1.5 Billion dollars last financial year. But Tobacco tax raised over $7 Billion. Couple this with moves to stop al fresco smoking with a cup of coffee – something that tourists who smoke expect to have when travelling – and they’ll probably prefer go somewhere else.
Who wants to travel somewhere and be treated like a pariah?
Regards.

When I read, and later saw the movie of Neville Shute’s ‘On the Beach’, I never thought that his parable about a post nuclear-world-war was really a prescient piece of futurology which told us of how we would all want to live in Oz following the AGW Carbon wars. Let’s face it, Oz is currently the sanest place on Earth.
340
As a New Zealander, I would say that Australia is not the sanest place on the Earth.
There are more species of things that can kill you in Australia, than in most other countries. I think it comes second to the Amazon Basin, but not by much.
100
Yep, I’ve heard that Manly can be a real hazard area !! 😉
90
Actually, I think you mean Bondi …
70
Is Bondi where all the Kiwis hang out…??
…shows how often I venture up from the south. 🙂
60
Sanest or safest? Regarding safest – If you feel the need to venture into the domains of dangerous creatures you get what you deserve. Had not a snake, shark or spider bite in my 73 years here.
90
I did get bitten by a red backed spider once, on the lower leg. We lived a long way out of town on a rough road, and the women booked me into the two nearest hospitals, but I reckoned it didn’t seem as bad as flogging for an hour over the road. So I made further inquiries. The spider that bit me was a longer legged, smaller bodied red back. It turned out that that was the male, which is not so dangerous. It is the fat bodied female which is deadly. My bite was not badly painful, no more than about a green head ant, and less than a bulldog ant. Apparently a bad red back bite would be extremely painful.
One curious thing was that the square inch or so of skin around the bite was sweaty for weeks after.
40
Q.E.D.
10
In New Zealand they have the Katipo spider which is a relative of the redback and just as lethal.
10
Gotta find one first. The Katipo is very shy, and is generally restricted to the west coast sand dunes, which are a major feature of the west coast beaches. These are very popular surf beaches. Given the annual population of visitors to these beaches, one could expect the occasional bite. I haven’t heard of anyone dying from a Katipo bite, let alone being bitten by one. Despite being a regular visitor to these beaches and spending much time fossicking among the dunes, I haven’t even seen one!
So, in the interests of `factual reporting’ I looked it up on that compendium of `accurate’ information, Wikipedia. According to that, no one has died of a katipo bite since the 19th century. Antivenom is supposed to be readily available.
10
My Mother-in-law was bitten by a Katipo. It made her ill. The spider died. Draw your own conclusions.
40
Mother’s-in-law are more poisonous then Katipo spiders?
Ya, sounds about right.
10
In Australia it’s all about spiders and snakes, in the Amazon is’t all about the palm trees and caterpillars.
00
See you people living in OZ and NZ in March.
60
Congratulations! My wife and I rank Australia as one of the “must see” places for our vacation dollars (which accumulate very slowly, hence “must see” and not “have seen”). I look forward to our eventual visit to your country.
In the meantime, we must content ourselves with domestic tourism here at the other end of the “axis of carbon”, in Canada. (I haven’t found a nice graph like yours, but basically visitors to Canada took a sudden drop in 2007/2008 and have been holding steady since.)
160
Have a job in Canada where we need to send one of our techs and engineers to look at a potential fix for an extreme cold related issue with power generation equipment. It has gotten more complicated since the 9/11/2001 attacks took place. Passports take longer to get now, getting into Canada isn’t as difficult as getting back into the US though moving back and forth between the US and Canada isn’t the relatively simple matter it used to be whichever way one is going.
I wonder how much of an impact our not so beloved or useful Department of Homeland Security has had on tourism to Canada? Not knowing the numbers I don’t know how much of that tourism was from the US and how much from elsewhere but considering that trips to the “Great White North” from here in the US could be done over a weekend in the car I would suspect we made up a fair portion of it.
That’s another place I want to go motor around some day. Paternal grandparents moved down here from Canada so there was a time when some of my family called it home.
110
According to this report, in 2013 there were 16.6 million visitors to Canada, of which 12 million were from the U.S. 6.9 million of the U.S. visitors arrived by automobile.
I remember the days when you could cross the border in either direction with nothing more than a driver’s licence. *Sigh*
10
Brad R, do you think it is because of the new (2009) requirement to have a Passport and the new strict checks and enforcement of laws not permitting even petty criminals from entering? I have stubbornly refused to set foot in Canada since some friends were barred from entering for a fishing trip because of a very old history of a DUI conviction. Canada can kiss my butt and I’ll spend my tourist dollars somewhere else unless they change their ways.
90
You know, I hadn’t thought of that. I’m sure that has had an effect as well.
Yes, I’m aware of the silliness regarding ancient DUI convictions. I’ve heard there have been visitors turned away because of, say, a marijuana arrest in college thirty years ago. I quite understand your position, and I hope that someday some semblance of sanity returns.
20
I’m struggling to understand how Canadians could fly away from the Rockies, Yukon, North-West territories, and Whistler just to admire the splendor of our vast tracts of completely featureless flat land. 😉
Grass is greener on the other side of the familiarity fence?
61
From what I’ve heard, Australia is much more beautiful than you make it out to be. I’m keen to find out for myself.
And as for “completely featureless flat land,” we have the Prairie Provinces for that. (Or so I’m told…I’ve not yet been there.) 🙂
10
I have been there once. I found the prairies very flat and dreary. We could just see the Rockies in the far distance. BC was beautiful and very different.
00
Yes you are right, it does have some nice spots. I should apologize to you and whichever member of the Australian Tourism Bureau gave me a red thumb. I was being cynical.
It’s only 70% of the mainland that’s flat featureless desert.
I haven’t visited the best bits on the assumption it’s cheaper than world travel and I can do it later in life.
10
Andrew, it is not featureless.
Those figures moving in the distance are Climatologists looking for the missing heat. The kangaroos are more intelligent and lying in the shade of the bushes.

Years ago when I bicycled everywhere I found a book “Cycle touring in Australia” on one of my many wanderings through the book stores. Still have it. This was 20 some years ago and as the years catch up with me I doubt I’d make any of those routes even if they still exist.
But the photos. The mountain roads and forests in Tasmania, the beaches, forests, and deserts on the continent… Simply gorgeous.
So while I doubt I would wander the outback on a bicycle these days there are certainly some places I’d love to motor to. Like most of us here I would expect there to be reliable power at the places I stopped for the night. Having to make your way to the facilities by candlelight in an unheated bed and breakfast in the middle of the night may be nostalgic for some but it isn’t my idea of fun. Sounds more like camping only you’re paying for the room and bed.
70
Canada took a drop in tourist because of the Obama Depression. No excess wealth means no fishing trips to our neighbor to the north.
110
Ah, there is that too. Hadn’t thought about the time frame and the correlation with when Obama took office.
Actually I try not to think about anything that correlates with when he took office. I usually end up inventing new words and phrases that aren’t polite in public when I do.
120
they are not visitors they a re climate refugees !
the graph is quite clear you have a sudden accelaration of the number of “visitors” in australia wich can be attributed to climate change.
90
Why would anyone flee to Australia because of climate change, its even hotter than Canada(and everywhere else).
30
Because in Australia we don’t have climate change! People come here to get away from it.
By the way. It looks like it might rain, and it’s cold right now. (9 degrees.)
30
ok because of climate change refugees
10
We have daily weather change here in Victoria! It’s cold and windy right now. I believe NSW is having snow and storms…great weather for mid October…
10
We are not the highest emitters per capita and Abbott said “the science being settled on global warming is crap.”
161
But Scaper, from memory all things accounted I do think we are the second biggest carbon SINK per capita behind NZ if I recall correctly.
00
Damn! It’s those ‘old white men’ once again. I’m in good company. 🙂
140
Accompanied by “old white women” what is more!
Old White Woman Annie.
100
This “old white men” thing didn’t arise of its own accord. It is clearly a plan by somebody to take perceived opponents out of the argument. Those “somebodies” are racist, sexist, and anarchist.
They should not be taken lightly, not allowed to go unchallenged. At heart they are evil.
130
You forgot ageism, which is currently trendy…. like, what could older folk possibly know??
20
My favorite method is on the Celibrety transition cruise from Hawaii through French Polinisia and New Zealand to Sidney. I then caught a Grand Circle tour in Cairns. The last time I did this I contracted Beri Beri in Bora Bora at Bloddy Mary’s Beach Bar in French Polinisia. Snorkeling the Great Barrier Reef was a dream. The rats are hughe and stand on their hind legs. Croc tastes like chicken. The beer is world class but one should go into training before competing with the people of OZ And NZ.
60
” record 573,100 visitors arrived in Australia from all over the world. Year on year tourism from May 2013 – May 2014 grew by 8%.”
And very few of them came by boat !!
190
Mostly carried by Emirates, Etihad and Qatar! What happened to BA and QANTAS?
40
QANTAS don’t even do international flights into and out of Perth any more. They’ve partnered with Emirates on many routes so even if you book a QF, you often get an EK. Not that the PER-DXB and DXB-PER flights seemed “full” when I travelled last March/April.
I think I might mix up airlines on my next trip to Europe; outbound via DXB or DOH and return via SIN/KUL; flying the longer leg first in each case. We all have to do our bit for a greener planet. 🙂

Steven Goddard gives an interesting insight into Australian temperature trends…

Hi Griss, pretty much inline with my favourite spot in Queensland. Temps still are looking pretty flat even if the ACORN records are being fiddled.

GOOD MORNING – that “frequently irate bubble that is contemporary Australia”. How do you feel at being slated by a columnist two of whose most recent posts (in the guardian) are;
“the joy of tax. Why paying is a pleasure”
and
“Tony Abbott is right – Australia really is open for business”
(and that, by the way, is criticism!)
He is, apparently, the Grauniads specialist in the antipodes. He is one of yours, a Melbourne lawyer, probably the best aussie watermelon the Guardian can afford.
He asks “Why has the Australian body politic removed its head and replaced it by a pumpkin? The simple answer is elusive.”
Perhaps being systemically lied to, deceived, exploited, ripped-off, treated with arrogance and contempt and generally stuffed by a political elite might have had something to do with it – but he remains oblivious to the idea that anybody, let alone the humble voter, might disagree with him.
Read further down and I would suggest that if he visits Rome, the Vatican might merit a pass. All in all a good slagging off
by, judging by his profile, one with his hand well in the community chest.
160
Did it list his Union clients, by any chance?
80
yes- its all on wiki.
20
Thanks.

The lefty greenies are angry because Australia escaped the trap AFTER the door was slammed shut. Now the citizens of other countries will want to follow suit. The rumbling are already getting loud in the EU and if France doesn’t supply the rest of the EU with reliable energy or if Putin decides to play games with the natural gas supply you are really going to hear screaming.
Perhaps the biggest threat to the lefty greenies is the dissatisfaction with the EU overall exemplified by the gains made by UKIP.
Can’t Find the date on this but I think it is recent:

This ought to give NATO a good incentive to help Ukraine. But will NATO dare commit to doing anything? I wonder…
51
Not if they want to avoid a full-on confrontation with Russia.
70
Not while we’ve got the Obama millstone around our necks. No one can count on him… and rightly so. He’s getting really good at destroying anything he touches.
30
Niel,
I understand that. Yet I’m plain old livid that we continue to pull most of the load for NATO. They should have — and could have — become self supporting long ago. Instead they slowly slipped into socialism and decline while we stood by and watched. Now they can’t even tie their own damned shoes without help.
I could be tempted to say, row your own boat, to the NATO alliance. After all, who has the greater stake in this mess?

If anything, getting rid of the carbon tax would make you a more vibrant economy and a more desirable tourist attraction. 🙂
130
And hopefully the RET soon as well..
Then Australia will be really open for business. 🙂
(once Palmer realises that its better for him to get rid of it….
I wonder how much Al Gore and the Green Blob are prepared to fund him to keep the RET in place?)
140
They conveniently forget that Australia wasn’t supposed to have the carbon tax in the first place.
There are no European countries other than the UK in the top nine. I was talking to someone recently at a sporting event and he told me that it is virtually impossible for “ordinary people” on the “continent” to be a tourist in Australia – only the rich can do so.
So I’m amongst the old white men in this “sport”. Looks like someone similar is carrying a placard in the linked protest photo!

The PM has given an excellent speech on this topic in May. Its almost surreal to hear so much common sense after so long having to listen to the mad ravings of Rudd and Gillard playing at being leaders.
“I want you to know that you are not in hostile territory; you are here amongst people who want you to flourish and if there is one message that I can give you this evening, it is that this Government wants you to succeed, because when you succeed, our country succeeds.”
https://www.pm.gov.au/media/2014-05-28/address-minerals-week-2014-annual-minerals-industry-parliamentary-dinner-canberra-0
At a mining industry dinner in May, Abbott said his job in government “is to keep mining strong” and that it is “particularly important that we do not demonise the coal industry”. He said the fundamental problem with the carbon tax was that it promoted the idea that coal should be left in the ground. “Well really and truly, I can think of few things more damaging to our future,” he said.

Anyone who wants this country to go back into self induced recession over trying to control the global climate can basically get stuffed. Just don’t come here, we don’t want you and we don’t care what you think.

When I see the Uniting Church each with their own windmill and solar cells powering their massive church buildings, with no external coal-fired grid connection…
When I see places like Moreland erecting banks of wind turbines, removing petrol stations, removing coal fired electricity grid substations…..
When I see Universities running purely on “alternative non-energy”..
THEN I will believe that they are paying more than just lip-service to their religious CAGW priests!
One should be aware that McGibbon and 350.org is massively backed by the Green Blob and renewable energy cartels and the Rockefellas..
Follow the money !!!!!

Well said Safety, I think ‘get stuffed’ is Australia’s Goldilocks phrase, not too subtle not too crude…just right. 🙂

Like the British, “Sod Off”.

Was it supposed to change the weather, or stop it changing? Or change it from changing to unchanging?
I never get a consistent answer from these people.

Change the rate at which it changes.
00
Pollution? CO2? All life on earth is made from CO2 carbon dioxide and water, H2O and virtually nothing else. A bit of iron and 2% calcium for bones and salt (NaCl) for our chemical wiring. Coal is perfectly natural, dead plant matter. Natural Gas also means Natural Coal. Coal is the ultimate renewable energy, if you are prepared to wait millions of years. Too bad there is such a limited amount of it.
So how can the stuff from which every environmental commentator is made be pollution, or is that calling the kettle black? What sort of ungrateful creature rails against himself and his own existence, or is self loathing the hallmark of the socialist environmentalist?
Mankind is simply putting back in the air what came from the air, nothing more and everyone agrees it is all going back into the oceans anyway, not to reappear for thousands of years. (No, the oceans are not acid and never will be.) The only point of disagreement is how long it takes. The IPCC say 80 years and the C14O2 evidence shows 14 years but the effect is only temporary and we will run out of coal faster than any possible move to millions of silly windmills. The air is not heating anyway. If the glaciers come back soon, as expected, covering the Northern hemisphere land where 50% of humanity lives, the windmills will look very tragic in ice. Later civilizations will assign a religious significance to them, which is not far from the truth.
161
Exactly! It’s the ultimate biofuel.
100
Do a bit of research on the CO2 released from burning coal seams around the world, most of which were ignited by bushfires or lightning strikes, and some of which have been burning for centuries.
Do you ever see mentally ill leftists out on the street with banners saying ‘Stop burning coal seams now’. No, it is always ‘Stop capitalism now’, which is LeftSpeak for ‘Bring down those we hate and envy now’.
20
Actually that is closer to 30%, because the majority of people on earth, live in the tropics.
41
The figures I have read say 40% in the tropics which are quite incidentally, 40% of the land area. The other 60% live almost entirely, 58% North of the Tropic of Cancer and only an amazingly small 2% South of the Tropic of Capricorn, partly because it is almost all water below 40 degrees from the equator. Generally the glaciers made it to 40 degrees from the pole.
20
Just checked. Amazingly only two countries lie wholly South of the Tropic of Capricorn. Little Uraguay and New Zealand. Argentina, Chile and South Africa nearly make the list, but nearly half of Australia is in the tropics too!
Even then, Melbourne is South of the whole of South Africa, comparable to Santiago and Buenos Aires. There is virtually no one in the sub tropical Southern half of the world, which is not a bad thing if you live there but it hard to see how we are causing global warming.
50
However it shows how important Australian weather records are for calculating world land temperatures, especially at the start of the 20th century. It also makes you wonder if there was pressure to eliminate inconvenient truths.
90
Well, I was only making a guess, at 30%. I will accept 40% as being a better guess, and it splits the difference.
21
Yes but the amazing fact is that 58% of the world’s population live North of the tropics. That includes the top third of India, nearly all of China, all of Europe and Russia and half of Mexico. It is the bulk of the land. That is why there was the search for the ‘Great Southern Land’, something to balance what early explorers saw as the huge land mass in the Northern Hemisphere.
It is also why you have to question the Ozone hole being created by CFCs when it should be vastly greater in the Northern Hemisphere, but in fact is not a problem at all. In this world where everything has to be average, the Southern Hemisphere is much colder, as Prof Turner and his ship of fools found out when they were trapped in ice that was supposed to not be there.

nc, Sorry that your comment didn’t thread properly, I almost missed it. Can’t tell whether you are being sarcastic (leaning probably) but I’ll react by saying that I’m mature in my thinking perhaps not enough to please you when typing.
I don’t need to get into the US with anything, I’m already here. It wouldn’t surprise me to hear that the US does the same stupid thing. It is only a matter of time before we are prisoners within our own borders. That probably by design. The Man wants us to be subservient and conform to his commands. Repentance isn’t an option. The changes that gently force society to conform are not obvious but they are not hidden either.
Little by little we’ll live in a condition of house arrest believing we are free people.

Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel addressed the Conference of Defense Ministers of the Americas on Monday, unveiling a comprehensive plan for how the U.S. military will address the effects of climate change.
Rising global temperatures, increasing sea levels and intensifying weather events will challenge global stability, he said, and could lead to food and water shortages, pandemic disease and disputes over refugees and resources.

We may have an aging population, but the crisis in journalism is a lack of adults. The Guardian, NYT, Fairfax, Nature, Science Daily, Nature, National Geo, ABC, Slate…costly publications staffed with malevolent, conniving teenie-boppers (who are not necessarily young in years). ***banks should be “forced” to disclose. nice.
14 Oct: SMH: Banks should declare lending links to climate change exposured companies, says lobby group
by Eyers and Amanda Saunders
Banks should be ***forced to disclose how much of their lending goes to companies exposed to action on climate change, according to resolutions proposed by the Australasian Centre for Corporate Responsibility ahead of the big banks’ annual general meetings.
ANZ Banking Group, Commonwealth Bank of Australia and National Australia Bank have a “material exposure” to companies linked with fossil fuel extraction whose businesses could be impacted by limits to emissions, says a report by ACCR, a Canberra-based lobby group on shareholder empowerment.
ACCR, which was established less than two years ago, is seeking meetings with proxy advisers and the large superannuation funds to discuss its report, which will be launched at NSW Trade & Investment on Tuesday morning, ahead of the banks AGMs later in the year…
ACCR’s report was conducted in partnership with the Asset Owners Disclosure Project chaired by John Hewson, the former leader of the federal Liberal Party and former director of Macquarie Bank…
Hewson: “Shareholders in banks, particularly Australian super funds now have a great opportunity to turn up at the AGM and request much more detailed information on these exposures.”
Dr Hewson will appear on a panel on Tuesday morning at the report’s launch, along with Richard Denniss, executive director at the Australian Institute.
ACCR says it is a secular group but has been working closely with the Australian Religious Response to Climate Change, and it has been influenced by the Interfaith Centre on Corporate Responsibility in the US, which was the driver of the action against Bank of America.

Noting also that the education sector is well aware that the value of our dollar has driven down OS student entries with a recovery occurring this year.

Gee Aye,
Green thumb from me – all valid points that will assist in an influx of visitors – which does not detract from the basic premis that people will not avoid us because we removed the carbon tax.
00
You have to think many of the people who comment on coal and pollution do not believe Science is telling the truth. While on the one hand they quote ‘the Science’ as some sort of abstract external body of ideas which are beyond their understanding, a bit like Egyptian hieroglyphics, there seems to be this odd simultaneous reverence and total lack of real belief in the most basic science.
So do our environmental commentators actually believe coal and diamond are both made from carbon? Is water really made from gases? Are we really made from oxygen, hydrogen and carbon? Do they really believe trees are just CO2 and water? Do they believe that the plants they eat are made from the same stuff as animals, which of course ultimately live on plants. Is coal really plant matter and are the huge and pretty white cliffs of Dover made from CO2 and Calcium from dead molluscs, as were the great Pyramids of Egypt. Does sunlight really power all life on earth? You have to think they do not.
Do these commentators realise that below 200ppm, most of the world’s plant life would die from lack of CO2, that 400ppm is close to an historic and catastrophic low for life on earth below which there would be mass extinction? Or is it all opportunism, socialism, an attack on the thriving Western democracies and just a bit of fun and profit? The science revolution has displaced world religions, but there is now the feeling that many are retreating to very primitive shamanism, a belief in sun (solar cells), wind (windmills) and water (tidal). Fire is right out in the new ecological shamanism. Pure beings cannot be made from dirty carbon and non scientific people can be frightened by carpetbaggers and faux scientists, Lord Monckton’s Profiteers of Doom. Is that why none of Australian’s infamous Climate Commissioners were actually meteorologists?

All excellent questions Tdef, questions that will sadly never be asked or seen by an increasingly distracted populace, the average person will be focusing on the their problems in life first without questioning why those problems exist in the first place.
Have a look at the general behavior of people in society and you will see confused, aggressive, stubborn people that will reiterate the Mantras of the MSM and social media because it’s easier and they haven’t got the time with all their problems, in a way I don’t sympathize with people who suffer under the lifestyle of self inflicted social blindness but I can’t stand con artists getting away with criminal manipulation either.

Rorting in the power industry about to be laid bare
The government privatisation train is on course for a head-on collision with the parliamentary inquiry into “gold-plating” in the power industry.
Now a treasury analyst from Queensland electricity retailer Energex threatens to blow the lid on how the power industry “games the regulator” in unprecedented and gory detail.
Cally Wilson walked out of her job at Energex three weeks ago and turned whistleblower, telling the press how her bosses had conspired to push up power prices.

13 Oct: RenewableEnergyNews: Low Carbon ropes financial brain
UK-based renewable energy investor Low Carbon has appointed AES Corporation man Juan Martin Alfonso as chief financial officer.
Alfonso was with the Fortune 500 global power company, which has 35GW of generating capacity and $16bn in annual revenues, for 12 years in a variety of senior finance roles, including CFO of Europe and the Middle East and EMEA finance managing director.
His expertise includes financial management, accounting, planning, treasury, and risk management, built on operations, financing and complex transactions.
Low Carbon said the appointment is part of its strategy “to build one of the strongest management teams in the energy investment industry, in order to effectively pursue its long term goal of making a significant and positive impact on the causes of climate change”…
Low Carbon chief executive Roy Bedlow added: “In order to effectively invest in the best renewable energy projects in the most efficient way, we need the best people. 13 Oct: UK Express: John Ingham: New doubts over climate change as study reveals OVERESTIMATED forecasts
CLIMATE change forecasts may be overestimates due to a failure to take into account how plants absorb carbon dioxide, scientists warned today
They said the impact of rising CO2 levels on plant growth has been underestimated by 16 per cent.
And as plants absorb CO2, this has led to overestimates of how much of the greenhouse gas is left in the atmosphere.
Climate sceptics said the study by American scientists is yet more proof that the science of climate change is not settled and is instead much more complicated than previously thought…
This casts doubt on the drive for costly anti-pollution measures such as wind farms…
The study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences focusses on the slow diffusion of CO2 in plant leaves, with particular attention to the mesophyll or their inner tissue…
The report comes with climate change having paused for the past 18 years – but with climate scientists arguing that this is a temporary blip…
But Benny Peiser of the Global Warming Policy Forum said: “This new paper adds to a growing body of research which shows that climate science is far from settled. Quite the opposite is true: the more we learn, the more we realise just how little we know…
Dr Roger Dargaville, a research fellow and leader of the MEI Energy Futures Group at the University of Melbourne, Australia, said the impact of plants described in the paper “does not remove the necessity to dramatically reduce fossil carbon emissions over the next 40 years to avoid dangerous climate change”…

No wonder. Men over 50 have had a little more practical experience of weather and are in a better position to know when they are being conned.
Perhaps the sealer for the (well) over 50’s is the much better education from primary school to tertiary institutions they have experienced, than has the average run of the mill still wet behind the ears, partially impaired, gullible riff raff like Bornstein.
Oh and those of us, from poor families, who made it to Uni did so on scholarships won through getting top marks in English, maths and physics etc. No free Uni in those days. Just a better overall education for brighter students. Those are the best qualifications for an AGW skeptic.

We’re the ones who aren’t on the dole and our salaries are paying the lion’s share of the taxes and fees associated with this stupidity, of course we’re skeptical. It also doesn’t hurt that many of us have jobs where we’re required to use the laws of Nature (math, physics, chemistry etc.) to do things in the REAL world and we know the CAGW “science” is fatally flawed.

Dana hurls some insults!
14 Oct: Guardian: Dana Nuccitelli: Dinner with global warming contrarians, disaster for dessert
Socializing with global warming contrarians won’t break through their ideological biases
Twelve climate scientists and contrarians recently had dinner together in the UK, which for some reason received media attention. While everyone should be free to have dinner with whomever they like, the problem with this particular event was that the ensuing media coverage made the contrarians seem downright reasonable. For example, the article about the dinner stated,
“…the insults slung around online only hinder the process of rational scientific debate.”
Yet one of the contrarians attending the dinner was Anthony Watts, who runs a blog that regularly insults climate scientists and climate realists…
Contrarians have a lot invested in rejecting the expert climate consensus and opposing climate policies – culturally, ideologically, they’ve invested their reputations, and in many cases they’re financially invested as well. They’re invested in keeping us on a path towards catastrophic climate consequences…

NASA announces the end of The Pause!!!
13 Oct: TechTimes: NASA says Earth just had the warmest six months ever recorded
This September was 1.4°F above the 1951-1980 average, breaking the previous record set in 2005.
According to its updated data, NASA also discovered that the last six months were the warmest middle half of the year according to global records…
Research suggests that the warm temperature trends might be Earth’s warmest in about 4,000 years. Most of the heat caused by global warming has been stored in Earth’s oceans, but the atmosphere is warming up as well.

positively gloating!
13 Oct: Salon: Lindsay Abrams: Attention deniers: Earth just had its hottest September ever recorded
Global warming: Definitely happening
Since climate deniers love it when NASA says something that can be deliberately skewed as suggesting that the planet isn’t warming, here’s hoping everyone pays attention to this announcement, too: according to the U.S. space agency, last September was Earth’s hottest on record.
And as Slate’s Eric Holthaus points out, September’s high global temperatures mean Earth just saw its hottest-ever six month stretch, going back to an unusually warm April…
In North America, September was also the snowiest on record, going back to the 1960s. This does not disprove global warming, but it might mean that the continent’s in for a particularly brutal winter. If that turns out to be the case, global warming will still be happening.
http://www.salon.com/2014/10/13/attention_deniers_earth_just_had_its_hottest_september_ever_recorded/
10
You cannot ‘hide’ atmospheric warming in the oceans without heating the atmosphere first. What was predicted, beyond doubt or denial, is that the air would get hotter. No one predicted ocean warming and the models certainly did not. So to say that the real world is being sneaky and devious and secretive is about as unscientific as you can get.

Wouldn’t a particularly brutal winter reduce the year from hottest ever to merely average? Or can someone explain how a particularly brutal winter is proof of global warming?

Prime Minister Tony Abbott has spoken at the opening of the Caval Ridge mine, saying coal should not be demonised.
“Coal is good for humanity, coal is good for prosperity, coal is an essential part of our economic future, here in Australia, and right around the world,” he said.
“This is a sign of hope and confidence in the future of the coal industry – it’s a great industry, we’ve had a great partnership with Japan in the coal industry.
“Coal is essential for the prosperity of the world.
“Energy is what sustains our prosperity, and coal is the world’s principal energy source and it will be for many decades to come.”
“This mine is going to contribute some $30 million to the local economy so it’s much better for the local economy that we have this mine,” he said, not mentioning the entirely fly-in-fly-out workforce.
Mr Abbott is a straight talker, well done !! 🙂
90
If I might add something here on the opening of this coal mine at Caval Ridge in the Bowen Basin.
It will be mining Metallurgical coal, Coking coal used in the production of Steel.
It will be producing 5.5 million tonnes of coal each year, most probably for sale into China.
If we pretend for a minute that this was Thermal Coal to be used for coal fired power generation, then that 5.5 Million Tonnes is the equivalent that would be burned over one year in, umm, ONE large scale coal fired power plant (2000+MW Nameplate) in China.
ONE power plant for ONE year.
Tony.

That steel would never be used for 300′ wind turbine towers would it? I have seen the pictures and I know wind farms always sprout from the green earth, growing totally organically. Throughout history, totalitarians have exploited the young, and so it is with the CAGW cadre. CAGW, like all public policy issues, is about people, not science. For example, if you are an adolescent who has just had your first erection and the hormones raging inside your body are driving your to run out and socially advertise yourself and, thanks to our socialist education system you know nothing about anything, and you come across this apparently virtuous and high-minded cause that you think will make you attractive to a breeding partner, of course you are going to ‘believe’ in global warming. Meanwhile, the people who are exploiting you will be raking in the money and laughing behind your back at how easy it is to make money out of fools.
I note that the Liberals are trying to make changes to the national curriculum, but as usual are cringing under an onslaught from the Left, who naturally want to use education to brainwash juveniles and turn mindless automatons loose in society. If we lived in a decent society with decent government (which we do not), as part of their education juveniles would be taught about the origins of their socially competitive urges and how it leads to their being exploited and seduced by socially destructive behaviours. Collectively, they would be conditioned to identify and control their urges, and they could then get on with productive pursuits rather than wasting their best years wallowing in the morass of self-gratifying but socially destructive and ultimately useless behaviour into which so many adolescents are lured.

Below is a copy of my email just sent to Tony Abbott, the Climate Council, Alan Jones and many politicians …
Dear PM and other Politicians, Climate Council and Alan Jones
As I have previously written, the Australian Government has failed to pay due diligence in studying what is a completely false claim that carbon dioxide supposedly warms Earth’s surface. In that the Dept of Environment has not investigated the very valid physics which I present, nor even asked any physicist to contact me or discuss the matter, I propose soon to place a display advertisement in “The Australian” newspaper calling for funding from large companies who will be adversely affected by carbon trading in order to pursue legal advice pertaining to a possible High Court challenge against the Government. In the meantime I would suggest you heed this brief outline and perhaps read my book, copies of which have been sent to some of you. I write based on very extensive research over recent years and experience in physics dating from the 1960’s when I won a university scholarship and got my first degree in such. I suggest an enquiry should be initiated and I am happy to attend gratis.
The physics in my book “Why It’s Not Carbon Dioxide After All” and my peer-reviewed paper “Radiated Energy and the Second Law of Thermodynamics” has been proven correct by empirical evidence. See my site: climate-change-theory dot com
As Judith Curry wrote on her blog today “Climate models diminish the importance of actually reasoning about diverse types of evidence.”
Real world temperature data proves beyond doubt that the most prevalent greenhouse gas, water vapor, causes mean daily maximum and minimum temperatures to be lower because its radiating properties work against the gravitationally-induced temperature gradient in the troposphere. This lowers the gradient and thus lowers the supporting temperature by about 10 to 12 degrees, as is confirmed by empirical evidence. Further evidence from other planets reinforces what I say. Because of this it is blatantly obvious to all those who are not gullible and understand thermodynamics that the greenhouse conjecture is totally false and carbon dioxide, like water vapor, actually cools, but only very slightly, perhaps less than 0.1 degree.
Climate models disregard the gravitationally induced temperature gradient and assume it doesn’t exist, despite the science first presented by the brilliant 19th century physicist, Josef Loschmidt who was first to estimate the size of air molecules. The models also assume that the radiation from the cold atmosphere delivers nearly twice as much thermal energy to the surface as does the Sun. It doesn’t, and that’s why you don’t feel it at night. They also disregard the obvious fact that nearly all the Sun’s radiation passes down into the first 20 metres or so of the ocean, where it’s colder. There can be no heat transfer from such colder depths in the ocean thermocline back up to the thin surface layer in the non-polar regions, and so that energy only eventually warms the polar surfaces. So the calculations which use all the radiation from the Sun and the atmosphere, added together and used in the Stefan-Boltzmann equation to “explain” the surface temperature are completely false. What does happen is explained in my book, and the mechanism therein can be used to calculate the temperature on Venus and even at the base of the nominal troposphere of Uranus, where it’s hotter than Earth’s surface even though the planet is 30 times further from the Sun. That temperature has nothing to do with direct radiation from the Sun.
All climate follows natural cycles which are very evident in the inverted plot of the scalar sum of the angular momentum of the Sun and all the planets. In that plot (calculated from planetary orbits) we can predict slight cooling till 2028, then 30 years of warming (by about half a degree) and then 500 years of long-term cooling with superimposed 60 year cycles. This plot (below) has been on my earth-climate dot com website for three years.
The above is fact. Give it your earnest consideration and feel free to discuss it with me on 02 98…….
Sincerely
Doug Cotton
PS In 7 months since my book was published there is still no claim made for the $5,000 reward to prove the content substantially wrong.

I’ve never visited either end of the wicked “axis of carbon”, but this sounds like a good time to plant my carbon footprint on it, possibly starting with Australia, since global warming, I understand, is rather hard to detect in Canada, especially at this time of year.

Please don’t provide any more links to The Guardian.
I clicked on the article by Josh Bornstein and became engrossed in reading the comments.
It’s taken me to a very lonely, sad, depressing place but I should be OK after my next 6 or so sessions with my therapist.
What a tragic article and group of followers. Now I know who vote for The Greens and the lower end of Labor. Poor fella my country!!

AndrewWA,
Big deep breath and think of how miserable the Guardian is right now after ramping up for an angrier Australian summer what with the aircranes flown in early and all the winter growth withering and dying on the bush floor when…
oooops, mother nature steps in and it p#sses down rain and snow all along the eastern seaboard.
Not one mention of climate change in msm – just mother nature and the re-emergence of the traditional southerly buster.
How Tim Flannery must feel cheated with an order for extra copies already at the printers.
Not to worry here’s one way to stay warm, The Angry Summer burns really well – all that carbon don’t ya know.

The climate bien-pensant, exceptionally banal writer and Australian Of Shame Richard Flanagan has won the Man Booker, the world’s loudest gong for pseudointellectual onanism:
