National Public Radio (USA): ‘Should We Be Having Kids In The Age Of Climate Change?’
h/t to Climate Depot
Daily Caller Andrew Follett reports on a set of stories about population control “for the climate”:
‘We should protect our kids from climate change by not having them’ says Travis Rieder of NPR.
I reckon it seems fairer to have the kids first, then ask them.
Humans have put out 50% of all our emissions of CO2 since 1988, so everyone under 30 may have wished they hadn’t been born during the Anthropocene apocalypse. (All those hot summers, those boring lectures at school). Lets do that survey. How many 28 year olds think their parents made the wrong call in 1987?
Raising offspring is hard work. “Saving the world” might just be the excuse you’re looking for if you are not inclined to do nappies.
NPR Travis Rieder, a philosopher at Johns Hopkins University, told NPR. “The situation is bleak, it’s just dark … Population engineering, maybe it’s an extreme move. But it gives us a chance.”
Rieder said America produces a lot of carbon dioxide (CO2) per person, and the world’s poorest nations will be most affected by global warming. He suggests rich nations should stop having children to remedy this. Reducing the current birth rate to 0.5 kids per woman could be the “thing that saves us,” he said.
I can see his point. Having less babies might cool the world. There are no babies in Antarctica, and there’s no warming there either.
How many non-babies does it take to stop a flood in Bangladesh? Perhaps the IPCC has an App for that.
The Sierra Club thinks the government should issue licenses for parents:
“Childbearing [should be] a punishable crime against society, unless the parents hold a government license … All potential parents [should be] required to use contraceptive chemicals, the government issuing antidotes to citizens chosen for childbearing” David Brower, the first executive director of The Sierra Club, stated in an interview.
What could possibly go wrong? Teenager gets pregnant…
Do we give all kids the pill in primary school or just put the drugs in the water?
‘U.S. environmentalists are taking a page from China’s mandatory one-child policy even as China abandons the policy. If these wacky climate activists believed their own literature they would realize that ‘global warming’ may lead to less kids! (See: Climate Change Kills the Mood: Economists Warn of Less Sex on a Warmer Planet) The warmists have now graduated from regulating our light bulbs, coal plants and SUVs to regulating our family size. Let’s keep ‘global warming’ out of the bedroom! Let’s give families the freedom to choose how many kids they want!’
Seems to me that rich nations look after the environment. Poor nations raze forests. The real problem is wealth. Solve that and the rest solves itself. Wealthy women choose to have less kids, and well fed people choose to eat less monkeys.
Burn oil, feed the world, save the environment.
(New skeptical film ‘Climate Hustle’ debuts on DVD: Order Now! – Order now: www.ClimateHustle.com)
There are far more dangers that this bull crap of “Climate Change” when we have such horrors from atomic energies(man-made) on the environment to the terrible decisions of adding new species to control the environment to chemicals that we are not accustomed to our bodies…
Take your pick…many worse problems that are not being discussed or tackled.

Maybe we should focus on terrorists not making little terrorists first?
282
When the extreme greens advocate eugenics, population control, 10:10 eco-snuff movies, forced sterlization – who are the terrorists?
92
These expressions of eugenics and population control are a good example of why we shouldn’t empower a centralist body such as the UN. It is the only forum that could impose such a scheme as it is posited as a global issue just like, and now inexorably related to anthropogenic climate change. Both these concepts are hugely dangerous ideas that haven’t been well thought through. Both these ideas stem from the view that man can control everything by virtue of the intellect of the few. When whittled down to basics, this is little more than a form of feudalism and will ultimately be resisted by man’s vital forces most vigorously. It is only by that, meaning blood in the streets, that either of these concepts maybe self fulfilling. It would be yet another demonstration that so called intellect is a handicap to survival. Heaven help us; microbes have a better track record of succession.
261
No need for eugenics, just give the 300 million women without access to family planning this cheap technology, which we in the west all take for granted, and they will each decide when and how many children they want. They will decide how many they wish to love and raise.
This will reduce the number of abused and unwanted children, and ultimately mankind’s footprint upon the planet.
Family planning is the most cost-effective technology we have for the reduction of poverty – UNFPA
The population of the planet has increased threefold during my own brief life: we now see mass migration and poverty. How sustainable is that?
613
Gordon,
You’re saying you have the technology to alleviate another’s poverty by means of birth control. How is that not eugenics, especially considering that poverty is a subjective assessment. The resultant outcome of your scheme has no more of a guarantee of success in the long term other than you’ve managed to impose your assessment of the situation onto a third party. An assessment predicated on the assumption your world view is impeccable.
Voluntary contraception is one thing but having it administered by the UN as a panacea to relieving poverty or any other malaise of mankind, especially eco-guilt, is a troubling development. It has no prospect of being either safe or fair or wise.
122
Gordon,
Your remedy will have cultural ramifications that may not be obvious at first glance. History is full of examples where grave mistakes were made with the best intentions.

A site I use regularly when my curiosity on some demographic question be it national or global is aroused.
.
For those who would like to research some more data on birth rates, population growth, aging and demographics in general across the world’s nations, particularly in what is regarded as a very rapidly growing population with very high birth rates per thousand population such as the African nations then the “Index Mundi” site which uses the “CIA’s Country Facts Book “as it source is one of the “go to sites” on the internet.
At this site you will find graphs with supporting data that almost universally shows that the birth rate across Africa and most of Asia is slowing and in a lot of nations slowing rapidly.
It requires about 2.1 children per couple to maintain replacement numbers of population.
Less than that and you have a falling and increasingly ageing population.
And you will also see in some countries where there is war and terror and a breakdown in the ruling and civil governing structures such as law and order and health there is a quite abrupt rise in birth rates as well as a similar increase in death rates.
This is a well known occurrence when ever health and civil structures and community constraints break down and disintegrate under war time and severe civil conflict situations.
A lot of the data and the consequent graphs shown in the Index Mundi site as with other similar population and economic assessment sites from many of these undeveloped nations are really only well reasoned guesstimates.
But as there is nothing better on offer data wise they are still a reasonable and sometimes the only source of data and information on that country.

@Rob;
“Access” is voluntary, dimwit.
10
Worry not. The Low Fertility band of the UN population Survey, the only one ever close to actual, projects 8.5 bn. 2040s peak, declining thereafter.
10
Yes, RobK,
With many separate states working on a problem you get novel hypotheses generated, new ideas to try and to test. You do not tend to get that with a monolith.
Geoff.
41
Yep a good example of why we shouldn’t empower a centralist body such as the UN. It is the only forum that could impose such a scheme as it is posited as a global issue just like, and now inexorably related to anthropogenic climate change.
And even when the UN admits that CAGW is effectively a scam, no-one seems interested.
At a news conference last week (October 2015) in Brussels, Christiana Figueres, executive secretary of U.N.’s Framework Convention on Climate Change, admitted that the goal of environmental activists is not to save the world from ecological calamity but to destroy capitalism.
“This is the first time in the history of mankind that we are setting ourselves the task of intentionally, within a defined period of time, to change the economic development model that has been reigning for at least 150 years, since the Industrial Revolution,” she said.
Why doesn’t her statement as the executive secretary of U.N.’s Framework Convention on Climate Change cause the immediate shut down of the Klimate Change industry?
71
The UN is a just imposition of Communism ont he whole planet.
Whatrs instructive is that the UN is *nothing* unless supported by nation states.
Ergo, which nation states are secretly communist?
61
Sorry…too early in the morning….
First line should read :
“The UN is just imposition of Communism on the whole planet.”
31
Noticed that. One khardy too many?

Not enough caffeine….
00
Sorry to introduce Godwin’s Law into this discussion – but wasn’t Hitler (along with a load of western philosopers) a fan of eugenics?
00
Sorry Joe, but I must put my hand up here to say I profoundly disagree with you about any of those matters being important.
Rationality is keeping things in proportion.
To be rational, you include the good with the bad, and the size of the benefits as well as any harm.
It is my considered judgement, and that of experts whose judgement I trust, that it is irrational to be alarmed over any of the matters you’ve mentioned.
Despite this disagreement with your listed specifics, we do have some common ground. For example, we agree there are many issues more important than alarm over thermogeddon.
I rank them in order as starvation, slavery, poverty, oppression and illness. If we can be the generation that fixes those problems, we will have truly done remarkable work.
40
“The situation is bleak, it’s just dark … Population engineering, maybe it’s an extreme move. But it gives us a chance.”

Is that “yes sir!” or is that “is that really right?”?
Cause that makes a difference.
60
Yes Jorge,
This could have been taken directly from the 1920’s German philosophy on genetics.
If we are going to restrict population numbers, let us only allow the genetically purest couples to breed, and by so doing, we shall create a new master race.
221
This is the way the “Brown Shirts” acted in 1932 when Hitler was an “Up and Coming”Nazi, before WW2.History is repeating itself, sadly.
The new fascism of the left is filled with violence and hate.
110
Got it in one!
But there’s nothing new here. Nazi eugenics had roots in the US, including work by well-known American scientists. Here’s an article by A.E.Samaan on the subject, vis-a-vis Harvard in its glory:
http://www.academia.edu/3091739/Harvard_and_the_Holocaust
[I’ll approve this without any objection. But please, everyone, soft pedal the Nazi discussion. Remember that the topic is not Nazis or anything to do with Nazis except incidentally.] AZ
40
Eugenics was of course one of the Fabian Society (established late 1800s in England) platforms, remove the people deemed to be a burden on society.
Socialist new world order agenda pursued to the present day using the UN as HQ.
110
Well yes. From what I can see this mob ( and others hwo have srunk the loony kool aid ) have been driving this stuff for almost 200 years…. one wonders why over such a long period would people be so keen?
From a Biblical Christian perspective, the existance of intelligent evil ( the Devil ) is often IMHO proved out through stuff such as this, whereby you have organized anti-human activity running through multiple generations but with a significantly coordinated approach. The Devil is show to hate humanity and want to cause as much misery as he can, but his main prize is to turn humanity against God. If the devil can inflict a smuch misery and hate as possible, it clouds peoples judgement and when people are emotive they dont think straight. Thank fully God provided redemtion through Jesus, but had that notr been the case we’d be in a bad way.
So logically, if the Devil can make people bad then tell them they have no hope ( by lying and telling people that God wont forgive them ), hes got them. In the Bible, the Devil gets too big for his boots, scraps with god, God rightly turfs him out of heaven. The Devil winds up on earth and is severely ticked off. God created man in His image, so anything that reminds the Devil of God and is easy picking is humanity:
“Therefore rejoice, ye heavens, and ye that dwell in them. Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time.” ( Rev 12:12)
As such, the Devil will create these organizations as part of the demonic master plan to create as much human misery as he can. WW1 & WW2 were certainly a good start. One benefit of wars to the Devil is mass human sacrifice, but also that the tech required fro Mark fo the Beast is fast forarded – ever wondered why so much tech advance has happened so quickly? Its instructive to know the first apple sold for $666 ( the Devils number ) and its insignia is the bite taken of the apple in the garden of eden….. Billy goat Gates is connected to a wealth Elite family and part of the Elite ( occultic ) blood lines that run Amerika. That shiny new smart phone is nothing more than a unix powered tracking and listening device…but well marketed.
As such, were in a countdown IMHO, to whats in Revelation….

Sounds just like “Brave New World” to me – now that is scary, as I thought that would never come to pass in my lifetime.

“If these wacky climate activists believed their own literature they would realize that ‘global warming’ may lead to less kids! (See: Climate Change Kills the Mood: Economists Warn of Less Sex on a Warmer Planet)”
I suppose that’s why people in warm places like say, Africa and India have fewer children. Oh, hang on a minute.
260
So economists warn of less sex on a warmer planet. I might believe that if it came from, say a credible medical researcher or psychologist or maybe better, a sex therapist. But from an economist?
90
Yes, I think we better hang on a minute !!! 😉
50
“So economists warn of less sex on a warmer planet”
Hey, then what is this think called amplification of the poles.?

Third world peoples have more children, because the infantile death rate is much higher than it is in the first world.
But hey, Climate Change is only a first world problem, right?
80
There is a very telling graph which shows an almost straight-line correlation between education of girls and the number of children they have (reverse correlation, of course – more education, less children).

On what kills (or increases) the “mood”: I remember the incident, now already a long time ago in which a failure at one power distribution point cascaded all around the grid until the entire northeastern U.S. and a big part of Canada was in the dark, including New York City. It took several days to restore power to everyone affected and a funny thing happened 9 months later — there was a noticeable uptick in the birth rate. I wonder why.
It would seem that many things influence the mood. I would have to be crazy to believe that hot (or any) weather can have any worthwhile contraceptive value. People do what comes naturally and many things distract from that but just a surely, many things reinforce that imperative.
Sorry but it’s a hormone thing, not weather.

I got this expression via Small Dead Animals
“As surely as babies follow blackouts”
80
Roy,
On what kills the mood.
1. An unexpected “Do you think that we should talk about marriage?’
2. “You must meet my parents.”
3. “Oooh, look at that, it is just like a penis, only smaller”
4. “How would I like my eggs for breakfast? Unfertilised”
5. “Is this rubber thing supposed to have a hole in it?”
6. “My Mum comes into the room without warning”
7. “Uh huh, period is early this month”
8. “Uh huh, period is absent this month”
9. “I do look older than 14, don’t I”
10. “We should stop now and talk about climate change”

“In your case I’m prepared to make it retrospective”

F*****G HYPOCRITE !!!

That should say “He” was 3rd of 4…. referring to David Brower

I quite like 7 of 9. ” You WILL comply”.
80
Haahahhaaaahahaaaah… me too.
10
But in a way, I do agree.
All those who are stupíd and gullible enough to belong to the CAGW cult, SHOULD be chemically castrated..
That way the future population stands a chance of evolving rather than devolving.
193
I’ve been wondering something since I heard the original report on the radio. Who is more likely to come up with a solution to the perceived problem, a highly educated member of the first world or a traditional tribesman from the Congo with no education? And if you say educate the tribesman, then aren’t you just shifting the perceived problem because you’d need to bring him up to first world standards? Otherwise, you’re just looking for an angle to bring about the 5.5 billion reduction in world population by making it voluntary.
70
Looking at population projections for Afrika around 2100 looks ..well,I don’t quite know how to put it! Holy cow.
30
Africa is a net food importer, and they already cannot afford the bill. Bad stuff happens when people are hungry, and it usually result in further disruption of the food supply. Whoever came up with those projections is the worlds biggest optimist.
50
Indeed. One of the great tragedies of the African Continent, when it might be so very, very different, as for example it used to be in Zimbabwe – a net food exporter and only farming a fraction of their potential. The Continent has the potential to become the World’s granary and provide in addition, base resources in eye watering amounts, yet they squander their potential in discord and corruption, aided and abetted by political and corporate interests elsewhere.
50
Agreed. Mugabe is a Marxist and has systematically demolished his countries capability to be productive in anything to maintain his grip on power. Mugabe is a meglomaniac.
Politcs is the main cause of poverty and starvation – the food is available, its just that the human vultures get to it first…..
I was listeneing to a podcast of an ex-South African Army soldier who became a Christian Missionary who had worked in Malawi, Angola & Zimbabwe, who had been taken prisoner in one of those countries.
His biggest fear was being captured alive by Communists, as quite a few countries in that area where communist.
He considered the Communists the worst of all human rights violators….electic shocks, heads in buckets of urine, heads in buckets of faeces etc etc….
30
Ah yes, National Public Radio (NPR), that bastion of sound thinking and critical analysis now enters the climate change debate for real.
The plain truth is that without the support of the United States Government they would go off the air for lack of support. They are like the left’s old equivalent of talk radio, devoid of enough real content to attract listeners and therefor, being NPR (non commercial) unable to attract donations in sufficient amount to support themselves without help from the taxpayers.
They have almost an audience and I guess that justifies pontificating about not having children in this age of climate change. Do they remind you of a human species suicide pill?
If there ever was a place where there’s nothing to see here folks, just move on a long, it’s NPR. They have been a joke for as long as I’ve known about them and they seem intent on remaining a joke.
There is no way to pile enough ridicule on top of NPR. They talk just to hear their own voices. Blast the whole lot of them.
110
In retrospect I must retract that last sentence. It should be damn the whole lot of them. Who do they think they are?
90
The very same NPR which did nothing to stop (I am trying to be polite) Freeman Dyson being the victim of a virtual lynch mob in May last year.
http://www.npr.org/2015/05/02/403530867/a-veteran-scientist-dreams-boldly-of-earth-and-sky
90
There is no one at NPR who is in the slightest degree qualified to shine Freeman Dyson’s shoes, yet they will be his critic, indeed attack him without hesitation.
In fact, I don’t see evidence that anyone at NPR is qualified to shine the shoes of any of the regulars on Jo Nova, yet they pontificate like they had a direct pipeline from God Almighty. They are no better than anyone else on this Earth yet they elevate themselves to the status of expert enough to suggest we should not reproduce in order to save those children not conceived from climate change. I could not come up with such an idea even in a drunken stupor.
Yes, I am mad, very angry over this. Who in hell do they think they are? 🙁
40
I hope people are still looking at this thread because I went back to the NPR article on Dyson and read through a lot of the comments, in fact I stuck to it until I was worn out with the personal attacks and nonsense.
It’s amazing how easily commenters can condemn someone else while having their own position looking so precarious as to be obviously questionable. The quality of the debate on NPR is nothing near the standard I see on Jo Nova. A lot of it is on the level of some of our trolls who do nothing more than claim something is true and then demand that we produce evidence that they’re wrong. And some of it is even worse than that.
I have no way of knowing the qualifications of anyone who commented but I found only a couple of comments that were scientifically sound and made a good argument.
With this kind of public debate, how in the world can we win people over to a more skeptical and reasoned point of view?
01
Roy where the idea of CAGW is concerned,
61
Yes, we should protect our kids from everything they may need protection against by telling them the TRUTH.
When a kid asks innocently, where do babies come from, mom (or dad), what do we tell them? Well, son, the stork brings them or some other story to dodge the uncomfortable facts. Or do we say they grow inside their mothers and let the conversation go on wherever it goes? So you may not know and be worried about what the next question may be. Our children are more able to understand things than we think. And is it better that they learn the truth on the playground or from mom and dad, no matter the subject?
The world is tough enough when you know the truth of things. Why do we make it worse by telling tall tales about important subjects, whether science, biology, the troublesome bully at school or something else?
30
Sorry but this is always a touchy subject for me because I had to learn so much the hard way that I should have found out the easy way at home.
Enough said.
30
You wouldn’t believe (or maybe you would) that their ABC (Australian Broadcasting Corp) treats us to a good dose of NPR every day just after noon.
Ah yes, the NPR and the ABC, where propaganda is rife and they proselytize with a straight face.
120
Getting your knickers in a knot over the ABC or any other similar propaganda producing parasite is your own fault!
If everyone ignored them they will go away! As long as they have have an audience that react , they will continue to push more crap, to get a reaction to which they can respond with even more crap.
31
Unfortunately,”We”still have to pay for them.
60
Where did I say my knickers were knotted?
I simply pointed out to Roy that the NPR lives in this country, too!
Perhaps it is your own malfunctioning hippocampus erectus that is tied in knots ?
40
And I do ignore NPR. Haven’t listened for many years. But here it is, shoved in my face so I speak my mind about them. But NPR doesn’t go away simply because I follow your very good advice.
30
That should throw the cat among the pigeons with quite a few “minorities”. How many of their “rights” will the Sierra Club dare to trample over? None, I suspect.
90
I wonder what the licensing criteria would be. Probably everything you never wanted to know and should have been afraid to ask.
70
One only has to look at the quandary in which a lot of those of the ‘regressive left’ found themselves vis a vis a horrendous nightclub shooting spree.
The angst and confusion was evident until the hive-mind spoketh, and one of the 2 apparently ‘defenceless’ and ‘permanently victimised’ minority groups was then very firmly relegated to 2nd (i.e., insignificant) place.
With friends like the aggressive regressives, who needs enemies?

Jo,
You have a real knack for picking topics ripe for poking fun at. I just wish these people were not so serious about what they say and had a lot more analytical and critical ability behind them.
The seriousness with which they propose the preposterous, absurd and ridiculous scares me sometimes.
110
In other words, the preposterous proposers are seriously serious about being serious and they seriously expect us to be seriously serious about it too … and in a serious way – no giggling at the back of the room, there …
120
Say what? 😉
50
OK, if it makes you happy … “What?”
40
That’s what I like most about you, Rereke, your sense of humor is as nuts as mine. 🙂
30
Time to join my brother and restart his campaign to “bring back the bomb”. At least it was a visible threat.
Isolated from the masses and naive, I spent the first 45 years of my life in the confident expectation that modern communications, from radio and TV to jumbo jets, would protect us from further wars. Wars were founded in ignorance. Then I saw Rwanda and Srebrenica, and I realised that, no, people never change.
Living as a farmer with animals domesticated and wild, and pests of many sizes, I know that yes, there must be a limit to the number of people that the planet can support. But to capitulate on the basis of that recognition is to destroy yourself first. Indeed this is why Angela Merkel thought Germany needed those refugees. To replace the children the Germans and other Europeans chose not to have.
Which reminds me of an Australian Prime Minister boasting of the “skilled migrants” that were being admitted to Australia. Importing our bosses! A very strange thing for a society to do, and a fertile field for social studies.
I know that one day some calamity will dramatically reduce the population of the world. War? Pandemic? Pestilence? Even climate change! We could even see another dinosaur event.
But not the climate change for which we are called on to modify our current way of life. It ranks a lot lower than the bomb.
70
The Australian branch of the company I work for, is managing to fire the local workforce, and bring in a lot of supposedly skilled personnel from overseas to fill the gaps (with exceptions, they look great on paper, but all too commonly, they are not as good as advertised). Meanwhile, Australian university graduates (various geosciences) are looking for work, as are some very experienced and knowledgable people, but are told that the company is not hiring at the moment due to the low oil price…
It takes 2 to tango, and the company is doing what it can to reduce costs, but the government is allowing it to happen. (yes, this is extremely off-topic, sorry)

What is this term “having children”. So very sexist! Seems only women have children. This is presented as ‘landing aircraft with the wheels still folded up’ the second time! Does anyone actually do that? 🙂
53
Not likely. If their license survives the first one they have learned their lesson. 🙂
How this applies to parents though… …well I’m not sure.
60
FYI: The correct terminology is simply, gear still up.
50
“the gear still up“, man’s fundamental problem, it seems.
50
Plenty of glider pilots have done a wheels up landing.
Usually it means you have yourself a gel coat re-do job on the bottom of the cockpit area in a sailplane where the gel coat has been eroded off or deeply marked by the terrain over which you bounce about for a few metres until all the noise and crashing and banging stops and silence reigns.
Well silence reigns for some seconds until it is usually rudely broken by the sustained volume of swear words emanating from inside the cockpit .
Rarely is there any damage to the pilot except to his ego and his cheque book particularly if he does it in front of his so called mates or in front of a mass of spectators.
Of which I have seen a World Champion at a World Gliding Champion ships here in Australia put the wheel [ a single fuselage centre line wheel in gliders/ sailplanes ] down in circuit and then got a bit distracted somehow and proceeded to retract the wheel just before he landed / arrived!
Made one heck of a lot of glider pilots that day feel a whole lot better about their own wheels up landings.
I’ve done it a couple of times in my 3000 hours of gliding but fortunately both times it was in a training glider that I was instructing in which had the wheel still extending some 5 cms below the fuselage by design.
And so we just sort of descended that extra 30 cms to almost touching the ground which made me suck up the vitals so they wouldn’t get eroded and so we rolled to a comfortable halt.
Pheww!
40
I never was interested in sail planes because they aren’t a very good cross country airplane and also because I would have a very long drive from home to get to where I could do it. It just isn’t done in the crowded skies around Los Angeles or anywhere close. But back in 1993 I was down in Riverside and San Diego counties exploring back roads that I never had much chance to get to because of the long drive and heavy traffic. One day I discovered a small soaring airport at Warner Springs, way off in the boondocks and I stopped to look around. They were offering a ride for $100 bucks, kinda steep but I wanted to do it. I had my agenda set for that day and went on but a couple of days later I went back and plunked my $100 bill down on the counter and said take me up. The woman behind the counter looked a little surprised at my enthusiasm or maybe because I had a $100 bill where most people would give her $20s but she gave me some paperwork to fill out and then called in the instructor pilot who promptly ushered me out to the plane we would use.
After showing me around the plane he asked me what was different from what I used to fly (I had told him I was a pilot). I was puzzled, surely it doesn’t need stating that there’s no engine, not even a wound up rubber band but I told him no engine and he was satisfied but never did say a reason for the question. We got in, the tow plane hooked up and we were off. He wouldn’t let me have the airplane until we cut loose from the tow plane and then he said, “It’s your airplane,” gave me the right heading and airspeed to hold, told me how the elevator trim worked and I had it the rest of the way. Compared to anything with an engine it was a dream, even stalled calmly and well behaved. He called the turn to base leg and I did the rest. I had it until about 30 feet AGL on final and my mouth was getting pretty dry before he finally said, “I’ve got it.” I wasn’t going to ask for help no matter how dry my mouth got.
Ever since I’ve wished that sailplaning was close enough to get to. They are really an easy thing to handle, no P factor, no torque problems and a lot quieter.
Anything big enough to be retractable was more airplane than my flying needed so I never did get checked out in retractable gear. So I never risked a gear up landing.
10
I had a friend who flew Spitfires in WW2. He was shot up a few times, suspected undercarriage damage, and did THREE “pancake landings” (with wheels up) on the grass. He knew he could walk away from the plane that way, but if he tried to land with damaged undercarriage he would probably cartwheel.
His C.O. was livid each time, but he survived.
80
My crusty old flying instructor used to advise that pilots flying retractable aircraft were divided into two groups, those who had landed with their wheels up and those who were still to do so. A good Scottish friend of mine in Australia, while being checked out by his Australian instructor managed to land gear up at night. The two were so engrossed in a nuanced argument about some trivial point of airmanship they neglected the obvious. The results: minimal damage to the plane, a unique opportunity to see the runway from a lower than usual perspective and two damaged ego’s were the result. Personally, I have fortunately manged to avoid the predicament.
50
Here a gear up landing has to be reported to the FAA and that requires answering all sorts of embarrassing questions. You can get off with a warning a suspended license or have your license revoked depending on you history of damaged aircraft, other trouble and how careless they think you were. So as I said, those who do it once and still have their license have learned their lesson.
In any case it’s more unusual now that they learned to include a very loud gear still up warning horn in the cockpit that goes off at low airspeed.
10
Yes, owners of seaplanes do it all the time. And nothing bad happens.
Same with glider pilots, except I always came in slightly nose down, and tended to bounce several times on the skid, before finding out where the wheel was.
20
I was always told that there are three types of pilots: 1) those who have landed gear up; 2) those who will land gear up; and 3) those who will land gear up again.
11,000 hours PIC, all three down and locked each time … … …. PTL!!!!!!

I would have said the same thing about my driving until yesterday. I started driving full time in 1957 and yesterday is the first time I hit anything with an automobile. Thankfully only minor damage and no one injured. But sadly, there is a first time for everything. 🙁
So here’s to 11,000 more hours with the gear down when it should be. 🙂

Relaitivism is another way of saying – if you remove a moral absolute from society, you can justify any form of evil as there is no absolute right or wrong.
From a Christian persepctive, IMHO this is why so many anti-biblical ( anti-God ) “pushes” in society fromt he Left are taking place – Australia and the West were built ion Christian/Judea roots, inlaw and behaviour. Seeing as the Lef tis Godless and nhilistic by its nature, they want to be able to run riot and cause mayhem LEGALLY ( like Hitler did by the Enabling laws ) before really getting going.
Its 1930s all over again….

Every country in the world has gone through a phase of population explosion. Most have come through with lower birth rates. Some, such as Germany, Italy & Japan now have declining populations. Even Bangladesh and India have much lower birth rates and population growth rates than twenty or thirty years ago. The reasons are not through birth control, whether voluntary or forced. One reason is that on average couples decide to have two children. It was just in the past that required having as many children as a woman was capable of for two to survive. Another reason is economic. In poorer societies children are necessities. In a richer societies they are a luxury. For instance a GGG Grandmother of mine was born in 1780. In the 1851 and 1861 censuses she was listed a widow, living with a son and his family. My eldest I am helping to finance as she enters University, and pensions will support my wife and I in retirement.

I’m trying to think of a single “intellectual” who supported Hitler. Drug addict Goering, aka “Jabba the Hun?” The cadaverous anti-Semite turkey, Dr. Gobbles? Chicken farmer Hen-rich Himmler? Thugs with father issues, the lot of them. If any of those were intellectuals, the bar has been lowered to…well, to today’s standard.
Okay, maybe Martin Heidegghead. But he certainly didn’t disappear. Franz Von Poopen? Survived. Help me out here: Name a pro-Hitler intellectual who was subsequently offed by the Nazis. I can’t think of one.

I’m right with them regarding reducing population, but not related to climate change – the planet may or may not be technically overpopulated, but living in Sydney, the very last thing it needs is more people. I think it’s an overpopulated cesspit.

For those living in Sydney a one child policy could be introduced, but it might be politically smarter to build a bullet train under the Blueys to the Western Plains.

This disgusting topic highlights an institutional marriage made in heaven — the marriage between the UN WHO epidemiologists (UN funded risk-mongers) and the UN policy makers (IPCC, WHO, ‘civil society‘, UN economic and social council, UNEP, health and safety, sport et al.).
The risk-mongers will pronounce the obvious. Birth is associated with a 100% risk of death. From an occupational health and safety perspective life is therefore a hazard with an unacceptable level of risk. The policy makers will have their justification.
The first step in the management of any hazard is its identification. The next is its elimination, or if that is impractical, its management through reduction. Outright elimination of the ‘life’ hazard is presently immoral, impractical (until robots are fully competent, sufficiently sentient and self-sustaining) and economically unsustainable. After all it has to be asked, who will generate the economic largesse required to keep the UN supranational Green Elite in the style to which they demand and to which they have become accustomed?
The UN sustainability strategists have already decided on the desirable population load for Gaia. It has yet to be decreed and the balance of the perceived population ‘life’ hazard may be theoretically managed away over time. However, in reality they may encounter a trifling whiff of push-back here and there.
The mere fact that this thread and this noxious subject has most extraordinarily seen the light of day should provide a sufficient expose of the moral and ethical bankruptcy of Green Politics. Further clarification is easily obtained here – The Green’s Agenda in their own Words. If this is a developing new norm in Greenism, it is in my view a new-age social and institutional chancre requiring of immediate cautery.

If a scientist was looking to identify a cycle in Doomsday Global Warming …
Malthus first set out his ideas in 1798 in “An Essay on the Principle of Population”.
This expounded a tragic twin trajectory for the growth of human populations and the increase of food supply.
Whereas the natural tendency was for populations to grow without end, food supply would run up against the limit of finite land.
As a result, the “positive checks” of higher mortality caused by famine, disease and war were necessary to bring the number of people back in line with the capacity to feed them.

Malthus had 3 children. A theoretician who thought his theory didn’t apply to him.
I remember as a University student attending a lecture by Paul Ehrlich who became well known for his controversial 1968 book The Population Bomb. He stated that the world’s human population would soon increase to the point where mass starvation ensued. Among the measures he suggested in that book was population control, to be used in his opinion if voluntary methods were to fail. What was agitating him was that the World population was heading for 3 billion and the Earth couldn’t support that many. He asserted that the oil would run out by 1974 and that cannibals would stalk the mid-west of the USA in 1975. I have an odd feeling that these didn’t happen which makes me doubtful about the claims of disaster if people (inferior types with different coloured skin etc.) are allowed to breed.
If these people are scared of the future of this planet I suggest we should build a large spaceship and send them to another planet (if they are not already there).
70
Graeme No.3 @ #21.1
Nah!
Space ships cost too much and are very difficult to build so that they will actually operate as designed.
Instead just use a modernised version of Jules Vernes moon gun from his Book, From the Earth to The Moon and fire them into space in the direction of the Kepler-186 system, about 500 light-years from Earth in the constellation Cygnus.

At last the real agenda is being exhibited. It was never about the environment. There is a belief that the world’s population is too large and needed to be reduced. Now that the majority of people do not believe that CO2 is the sole driver of climate another scare campaign will be deemed necessary.
There is also a desire to destroy capitalism and economic growth and this has been confirmed by the (erstwhile?) head of the UNFCCC, Christine Figeures (sic). This would slow down consumption of non-renewable resources.
The best way believed to achieve destruction of capitalism is to make access to energy expensive by preventing the use of cheap fossil fuels and develop expensive renewable alternates. Also a reduction in population would help achieve in the reduction of use of finite resources.
50
Ever the climate warrior, I’ve decided not to have termites.
60
Good decision. If you need any help, let me know – my area of expertise, and they are such huge CO2 producers.
30
All life produces CO2 from combustion of Hydrocarbons made from CO2 and H2O. All life eats only things made from CO2. Rocks and dirt do nothing. CO2 is therefore the problem? Without CO2 there would be no life on earth, so it is a rare gas, but as important as oxygen. Argon is 1%, 25x as much! The puzzle is that there is not much CO2 in the atmosphere and the reason is that the planet is covered in huge oceans in which CO2 is highly soluble, especially under pressure at depth. There is so little CO2 that if it was even halved, life on earth would cease at 0.02%
The puzzle is that the carbon cycle ever started. Free oxygen is the odd thing as most metals oxidize and I include carbon, so you would expect a lot of CO2 and very little oxygen. Simple hydrocarbons would have formed but how did they discover that CO2 and sunlight could produce more hydrocarbons? The development of genetics and the incredible double helical genome is beyond comprehension and all built on the basic discovery that CO2+H2O+sunlight produced something termites could eat and the termites themselves.
Now with all our knowledge, we have decided that simple CO2 is the problem, a truly evil gas? That is truly beyond my understanding.
The geniuses who have decided CO2 is the greatest threat to the planet since WW2 truly need help, not cash. Or they are just dishonest.

Jo and mods , i’m sorry because this comment is way off topic but I could not wait till a weekend open thread , just watched a BBC report on the united nations taking responsibility for a cholera outbreak that they admit they caused by importing foreign workers in Haiti , that has cost many thousands of lives after they responded to the earthquake there, and still to this day many lives are being lost to this outbreak ,not even Breitbart or the Drudge report have commented on this yet but they will because although the UN have taken responsibility they are hiding behind their international immunity , much of the work in Hiati was controlled by the Clinton foundation and once this BBC article goes viral , it won’t be long before the Clinton foundation is implicated and when Americans see this distressing report its the end for Hillary Clinton , once the likes of Peter Schweizer , Charles Ortel or perhaps your own Michael Smith get hold of this story .I only wish I could post this BBC report on Hiati but I don’t know how , can you help , although its very upsetting for those that have any love for humanity , and puts into perspective that the global warming argument, is just one part of a much bigger picture of Global governance . 19 Aug: BBC: UN admits role in Haiti’s deadly cholera outbreak
The UN has finally acknowledged it played a role in an outbreak of cholera in Haiti in 2010 that has since killed about 10,000 people in the country.
Scientific studies have shown that Nepalese UN troops were the source of the disease – but the UN repeatedly denied responsibility until now.
An internal report seen by the New York Times is said to have led to the shift.
But the UN still says it is protected by diplomatic immunity from claims for compensation from victims’ families…
No cases of the bacterial infection, which causes diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting and muscle cramps, had been recorded in Haiti for a century until the outbreak in late 2010…

Jo here on her blog, may not realise it but she is well along in the process of assembling a quite amazing collection, at least to an intelligent person, of some of the most inane, stupid, imbecilic, bigoted, fairy dust driven Climate Change pronouncements around that have almost exclusively emanated from a dictatorial trending, citizen’s personal behaviour and outlook dictating and controlling ,[ see Jo’s headline above ] hard left category of academics, greens, activists, biased brain dead Climate Change supporting politicals and severely intelligence challenged Climate Change elites along with “natural climate change deniers” of every version and type.
Just go back through Jo’s headline posts and see what she has published recently on the rapidly increasing collections of outright insanities that have their origins in the Climate Change industry.
Academics, greens, politicals, alarmist scientists and Climate Change activists are all and often the one and same creators of some of the worst of the Climate Change inanities and pronouncements being by far some of the whackiest and least related to reality of any of those rabid climate change pronouncements.
And that along with their invariably stupid and unreal predictions of some future climate catastrophe related event that are part and parcel of every Climate Change activist’s arsenal of fear and hate promoting pronouncements.
And every single one of these dictatorial level pronouncements and predictions of a never defined or spelt out imminent “Climate Catastrophe” unless we do or are forced and politically persuaded to do such and such, come from the so called educated elite in science and academia and the hard left of politics in the greens along with very large inputs from the highly bigoted and unaccountable social industry activists.
You sometime see those same inane and intelligence challenged pronouncements coming from bankers and some in the legal industry and others in the financial industry.
In short from those who never get their hands dirty or work in the real world where weather and climate are major factors to consider in any operation that is undertaken.
You rarely ever see such Climate Change stupidities coming from those who work in rural industries, trade industries, building industries, geology and mining industries, fossil fuel industries and the industries and science disciplines of every type that actually have to work in the real world and make their income and profits and reputations in those real world conditions.
Those industries and the people who work in them are in the real world and do not and cannot expect to airily float along on some little personal acid tinged cloud of anti development, anti fossil fuel, anti industry, anti everything that is of value to civilisation and then expect and demand a right to the full range of government handouts, government handouts that are derived in their totality from the productive industries and productive people in our society who are required by law to be taxed on the profits they might make which are made by creating things that people everywhere will want to buy and possess.
The very sector, the productive sector of our economy and society that the activists, academics, hard left greens and alarmist scientists and ignorant politicals, the entire collection of rigid climate change ideological imbeciles [ see Jo’s headline ] are doing their utmost to shut down are the sectors of our society and civlisation that have created the means by which all those entirely parasitical small time, small minded, inanity generating dictators of the Climate Change industry can exist and promote their increasingly intolerant ideology.
By definition, one half of the populace is below the AVERAGE level of intelligence;
There is no guarantee nor have I ever come across a study that shows the an educated academic or others in and at society’s elitist levels are of an any higher intelligence than anybody else in the society.
Intelligence of a high calibre in short is NOT the preserve of the high level elites in any sector of our society as those academic , political, green and activists elites would have us believe.
And so we see as above and as Jo is repeatedly highlighting here on her Blog, the abysmal levels of rationality and a remarkable display of inane and intelligence deficient pronouncements from the whole range of “Natural Climate Change Denying” greens, academics, alarmist scientists [ who have repeatedly and unequivocally demonstrated they are no smarter or more intelligent that the average man and woman on the street ] and rabid assorted climate ignorant activists just goes on and on with not a skerrick of any signs that the climate change ideologists and their running dogs in the media or elsewhere have ever learn’t anything about the climate and the people who they are attempting to force their personal beliefs and ideology onto.

19 Aug: CTV News: AP: DAVID McFADDEN: US appeals court upholds UN immunity from Haiti cholera suit
A U.S. federal appeals court has upheld the United Nations’ immunity from a damage claim filed on behalf of 5,000 cholera victims who blame the UN for an epidemic of the deadly disease in Haiti.
In a decision issued late Thursday, the U.S. 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals in New York affirmed a lower court’s January 2015 dismissal of a lawsuit brought in the worst outbreak of cholera in recent history.
“We have considered all of plaintiffs’ arguments on appeal and find them to be without merit,” the U.S. appellate judges said.
The ruling came shortly after UN deputy spokesman Farhan Haq referred to the United Nations’ “own involvement” in the introduction of cholera to Haiti…
Brian Concannon, executive director of the Boston-based Institute for Justice and Democracy in Haiti, said advocates for Haitian cholera victims will be watching the UN’s actions closely. They have 90 days to decide whether to file an appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court…

19 Aug: Washington Times: Valerie Richardson: Climate-change activists call for tax policies to discourage childbirth
“U.S. environmentalists are taking a page from China’s mandatory one-child policy even as China abandons the policy,” Mr. Morano said in a Friday statement.
He noted that climate-change groups have also touted the argument that people may have sex less often on a warmer planet, which would presumably lower the birthrate.
“The warmists have now graduated from regulating our light bulbs, coal plants and SUVs to regulating our family size,” Mr. Morano said. “Let’s keep ‘global warming’ out of the bedroom!”…

“Rieder said America produces a lot of carbon dioxide (CO2) per person, and the world’s poorest nations will be most affected by global warming. He suggests rich nations should stop having children to remedy this.”
===============================================
Rich nations have already pretty much stopped having kids. So has China – they’re about to depopulate by 400 million, yet their CO2 emissions are skyrocketing.
Rieder apparently doesn’t have a clue what’s happening in the world.
70
Travis has not had any children yet and is concerned for their future.
These mirror my own feelings in that we would not have had six children unless we thought they would be able to look after themselves, their own children, possibly us, and those they love, together with the societies where they make their home, through to the next century.
It would be a pity if this ethicist removed himself from the gene pool of the future by avoiding bringing on new life.
The ethical problem, after the pause, is answered by the question
‘Back in 1994 the precautionary principle was given as the reason not to put CO2 into the atmosphere.
The observed situation now is that any CO2 effect is mitigated or dwarfed by natural feedbacks.
Do we still stay on track for expecting CACG or do we educate for adaption for any future for our children?
Do we deny the opportunity of life for our children on the grounds of a CAGW theory, which they will probably learn to reject or refine, as it isn’t predictive anyway when benchmarked against observation?
Prof Plimer, to his credit, devoted a chapter in his book ‘Heaven and Earth global warming the missing science’devotes a whole chapter to just this question
What if I am wrong?
His book was torn to pieces, in part, by a leading astrophysicist.
Despite this the planet stayed on a flat temperature for another 6 years beyond its publication,
which confounded the IPCC predictions.
He argues that the warming, of whatever cause, is beneficial and that this is the first generation to
fear heat, when cooling is the event that may wipe out the human race.
The problem with the ‘tearing apart’ is that it fails to address the hypothesis that the warming we are undergoing is natural as we warm after the LIA, the null hypothesis.
Unless an ethicist can understand and address this central intellectual problem of CAGW, it may be better to see his article as fruit for discussion.
The precaution we need to take is to educate our children in adaption and care for the earth, not deny them their existence.

18 Aug: TimesHigherEducation: David Matthews: Science editor-in-chief sounds alarm over falling public trust
Jeremy Berg warns scientists are straying into policy commentator roles
As the new editor-in-chief of Science, a highly selective journal that still has the controversial power to make scientific careers, the biochemist and former University of Pittsburgh senior manager is worried about an apparent rejection of science by some parts of the public – and thinks that academics should look closely at how their own behaviour may have contributed.
“One of the things that drew me to this position…is there’s a crisis in public trust in science,” he tells Times Higher Education after starting in the Science post on 1 July…
***In the US, “scientists have been labelled as another special interest group”, he says…
Part of this is down to the polarisation of American politics and the rise of an anti-intellectual spirit, Berg thinks. His fears echo Atul Gawande, an American health writer, who earlier this year told graduating students at the California Institute of Technology that “we are experiencing a significant decline in trust in scientific authorities”.
In his address, Gawande cited a study that showed a significant decline in trust in science among American conservatives…
Donald Trump, who has erroneously linked vaccines to autism, blamed China for creating the concept of global warming to undermine US manufacturing and claimed that environmentally friendly light bulbs can cause cancer, can be seen as one manifestation of this long-term collapse in conservative trust in science in the US…

BBC World Service radio gushing over this last nite on one of their science shows:
19 Aug: BBC: Jonathan Webb: Zebra finch ‘heat song’ changes hatchling development
When the weather is hot, zebra finches in Australia sing to their eggs – and these “incubation calls” change the chicks’ development, a study has found.
The surprising discovery suggests that the birds are preparing their offspring for warm conditions after they hatch…
Compared to a control group, hatchlings that received these calls grew more slowly and coped better in the heat.
Writing in the journal Science, the researchers say this is the sort of adaptation that could help animals acclimatise to rising global temperatures.
“It doesn’t mean that they will still be able to breed at extreme temperatures – this was within the range they currently experience,” said the paper’s lead author Mylene Mariette, from Deakin University in Geelong…
It is a mystery, she added, how being smaller gives the birds an advantage in the heat. But it may be because growing in hot conditions is costly for the body, placing more oxidative stress on tissues – so staying small becomes a better strategy.
This could also help explain why, as global temperatures rise, wild bird populations in general are slowly shrinking – though mostly, that process has been seen to have negative consequences for the species involved…
Nicola Hemmings, a research fellow studying bird reproduction at Sheffield University in the UK, said the experiments were elegantly designed and the results convincing…

19 Aug: AFR: States target gas pipeline monopolies to boost supply
by Mark Ludlow & Angela Macdonald-Smith
State and federal energy ministers are set to crack down on monopoly gas pipeline operators in a bid to increase supply for the domestic market to ease a potential east coast gas shortage…
The Council of Australian Governments energy council meeting in Canberra on Friday also committed to fast-tracking regulatory approvals for a new NSW-South Australia interconnector which could be built within two years…
State officials have also been asked to provide a cost of their state-based renewable schemes and their impact on the National Energy Market, which is dealing with the influx of wind and solar as older coal-fired generation is retired…
South Australian Energy Minister Tom Kousantonis welcomed the unanimous decision to expedite the regulatory test for the new interconnector which will help the state deal with its intermittent wind and solar problems.
The COAG energy council has instructed the Australian Energy Regulator and the Australian Energy Market Operator to make a decision by December.
NSW transmission company Transgrid – which the Baird government sold to a consortium of local and overseas investors last year – is proposing a $500 million interconnector between Bagonga in south-western NSW and South Australia.
Transgrid executive general manager Gerard Reiter said they had yet to start looking at property acquisitions for the 340 kilometre pipeline from Buronga, but it was fast approaching.
“We haven’t been through that process yet but we want to make sure we get the property acquisitions as part of the process. That’s very important,” Mr Reiter told AFR Weekend…
But not everyone was happy with the meeting. Climate Institute chief executive John Connor said the COAG energy council was a missed opportunity for a coherent approach for a move to a zero-emissions energy sector.

18 Aug: Financial Times: Australian state’s power crisis sparks green energy backlash
by Jamie Smyth in Port Augusta, Australia
Reliance on renewables blamed for spike in prices
“There should be no further subsidies paid for an intermittent and unreliable power source that can be seen as a proven failure,” said Chris Back, a Liberal party senator who is pushing for a parliamentary inquiry.
Local newspaper the Adelaide Advertiser blamed the state government’s reliance on green energy for the “absurd prices” — average spot prices soared to A$229 a megawatt hour in July, three times the level a year earlier…
“The world took the opportunity to jump on the anti-renewables bandwagon but if you look at the spot electricity market today we are the second-cheapest place in Australia,” Tom Koutsantonis, South Australia’s treasurer, told the Financial Times last week.
This week, however, electricity spot prices surged again…
Analysts say the price surges raise fundamental questions about the state’s energy security amid its rush to encourage investment in renewables…
South Australia’s experience may provide lessons to nations rapidly increasing investment in renewables as they seek to cut emissions to comply with the Paris climate deal.
Tony Wood, analyst at think-tank Grattan Institute, said: “This is what happens when climate policy is not aligned with energy policy and state policy is not aligned with federal policy.”…READ ON

The political left has always had a natural predisposition to control through banning, prohibiting, forbidding, etc., usually with legal action, or public censure.
Analyzing such banning action shows that it is used to stop further investigations, to prevent debates and education on the subject. All too often it is used to hide some immoral or illegal action by those who seek prohibition while in power.
18c is an example in action here.
A problem suppressed is a proper resolution deferred.

Just looking at this now, Travis Rieder’s paper is not draconian like the Sierra club’s position. And he may just have come up with the most cost effecient CO2 mitigation strategy yet.
I doubt his ideas will get much of a hearing at the COP, though. The real agenda there is wealth redistribution, and his ideas don’t fit that mould.

Ermmm… What happened to that “global” bit about “global warming”?
If the wealthy nations commit suicide, does that make the poorest better off? Well, Robert Mugabe and Kim-Jong-Un, perhaps, will add another wing or two to their palaces, but destruction of wealth in one country simply does not miraculously engender affluence somewhere else. Canada could be entirely swallowed by the ocean, but Venezuela, for instance, would remain a self-inflicted disaster-zone.

Humans have put out 50% of all emissions of CO2 since 1988 .As HUMANS CONTRIBUTE AROUND 3% OF EMISSIONS,HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE?

That refers to a running total and is for human activity only.
Of course nature has a separate account that dwarfs the impact of humans.

Is the ‘war on coal’ at least partially responsible for the flooding (e.g. Texas, Louisiana, Sydney)? The ‘war on coal’ resulted from desperately clinging to the failed idea that increased atmospheric CO2 causes Global Warming. Thermalization explains why no credible CO2 level on earth would affect climate. Switching from coal to natural gas replaces harmless-to-climate (but helpful to life) CO2 with water vapor. The added water vapor contributes to more rain and flooding. How much of recent flooding is simply bad luck in the randomness of weather and how much is because of the ‘thumb on the scale’ of added water vapor?
A ‘top down’ analysis identifying the contributors to climate change (98% match with measurements since before 1900) and a graph showing the rapid rise of water vapor are at http://globalclimatedrivers2.blogspot.com

Imagine how awesome it would be if there was a downward spike in reproduction amongst people so gullible that they believed government (and media) pronouncements about stuff.
A rapid downshift in the proportion of the population so stupid that they think Tony Jones and Emma Alberici are anything other than glorified teleprompter readers? Chance would be a fine thing.
The global IQ would go up by 1s.d. within a generation.
Hard to see the downside, frankly.
That said: a sharp reduction in reproduction rates in the preternaturally-gullible would only barely mirror the ‘rising income/education effect’: the richer and more-educated the woman, the less likely she is to see reproduction as the best use of her time. Only relatively-poor, relatively-stupid people reproduce: smart rich women would rather go skiing.
Before you get all butthurt about it, check the data. It’s not just supported by the data, it’s one of the most robust ‘stylised facts’ about the interaction between economics and human fecundity.
20
Seems like it is finally starting to happen! The more warmunistas who believe this rubbish the less there will be in the next generation. As in most things, selection will tell. May be slow but the genetics will average out over global climatic cycles. The sad part is the population stress which may be caused in the development of selection pressure.
Give Darwin a chance I say.

The insidious motivation is population control. It’s underwritten in most green dogma.

Thanks Joanne
“Seems to me that rich nations look after the environment. Poor nations raze forests. The real problem is wealth. Solve that and the rest solves itself. Wealthy women choose to have less kids, and well fed people choose to eat less monkeys.”
I give up. If the “real problem is wealth”, how do we solve it? Nigeria can’t do so. See below.
The current world population of 7.3 billion is increasing by 83 million a year. It will reach 8.5 billion by 2030, 9.7 billion by 2050 and 11.2 billion by 2100, assuming UNPD’s medium variant projection is accurate.
If, however, a higher growth rate prevails this century – with an increase in average fertility of just 0.50 children per woman – it would reach 16.6 billion people by 2100, assuming another global doubling is supportable. In this scenario, India would have 2.6 billion and China 1.6 billion people.
India – with just 250 million people in 1950 – will overtake China as the most populous country in just seven years with 1.4 billion. Meanwhile, Africa’s population will double in the next 35 years. By 2100, almost 40 percent of humankind will live on this one continent.
Nigeria will overtake the US to become the world’s third largest country in just 35 years with 400 million people; more than double its current 170 million and eight times what it was a century ago.
As a Nigerian central banker explained on a 2015 BBC Inquiry programme:
“…gap between the rich and the poor has continued to grow. If conditions are so tough today for so many, what is it going to be like when twice as many live there in 2050? Yet this isn’t a question the political elite have been asking themselves. (10min.)
“My worry is that we are not making arrangements for this rising population. There is no country in the world that I know of over 70 million people that does not have a flourishing rail network, expanding social services and the rest of it. All those things need to be in place, together with better planning for population and for families.”
What if the government could not improve opportunities for the many millions more who will be living there in the next few decades? Its fast-growing young population – 108 million Nigerians are currently under 25 – could become ‘deeply frustrated’.
“The sort of thing that happened in the so-called Arab spring could happen in Nigeria.” (11 min.)
John Wilmoth, head of the UN Population Division, was interviewed by ABC RN two days after public release of UNPD’s 2015 Revision. He was asked whether it was ‘a positive picture’, or one that ‘worries you when you look at these numbers.’
“That’s a very difficult question. The births have stopped increasing…. But what is increasing is the number of people living at older ages and this is an enormous sign of success.
However, you can’t deny that the increased human activity in terms of consumption and production and the impact of human activity on the Earth’s environment is troublesome to anyone who looks at it.
To look at the change and speed of change that’s taking place, it’s troublesome to think about what this may bring in terms of environmental changes and how that then could alter the Earth’s ability to support not only human life, but life of other species.”
A year earlier, Wilmoth reportedly said: “There is a strong case to be made that the world faces sustainability issues whether it has nine billion people, seven billion people or four billion people. Nobody can deny that population growth is a major driving factor [of carbon dioxide emissions], but in terms of the policy response, what are you going to do?”
Food for thought.
