The decrepit legacy media is now so low there are competing stories in the same week discussing which form of decay is the worst.
Is it that the media suppresses the good news, or that it amplifies the bad — throwing fake mud that is never cleaned up? It’s two sides of the same corrupt, self serving coin. Pass on these links to friends who think the legacy media still has journalists with , a) a backbone or b) ethics.

Spread the word.
We all know about fake news – but the response does have a name. Its called the Gell-Mann Amnesia effect. Coined by Michael Critchon I believe.
“Briefly stated, the Gell-Mann Amnesia effect is as follows. You open the newspaper to an article on some subject you know well. In Murray’s case, physics. In mine, show business. You read the article and see the journalist has absolutely no understanding of either the facts or the issues. Often, the article is so wrong it actually presents the story backward—reversing cause and effect. I call these the “wet streets cause rain” stories. Paper’s full of them.
In any case, you read with exasperation or amusement the multiple errors in a story, and then turn the page to national or international affairs, and read as if the rest of the newspaper was somehow more accurate about Palestine than the baloney you just read. You turn the page, and forget what you know.”
I believe I have seen this effect regularly with professional friends who watch the ABC. They can’t believe how bad the ABC reporting is with respect to their own specialty – but offer no scepticism when looking at other reports of other specialties. They simply cannot transfer their learning.
I suspect it is a syndrome – Professionals who demand respect in their own specialties, and therefore offer too much respect to others who claim professional expertise in other subjects.
Gell-Mann Amnesia – remember it next time you read the paper!
520
Totally agree, professionals are brainwashed on climate change. Respect for the integrity of other professions, or something along those lines, is definitely an intellectual damper. I blame the ABC for everything.

Speaking of rank tabloidal levels of bias at the ABC:
http://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-01-09/steve-bannon-donald-trump-and-the-25th-amendment/9313610
They are breathlessly spreading fourth hand rumours about the POTUS under the banner “Analysis.” Time to stop funding this failing pile of garbage.
Are they trying to get a last minute honourable mention in the Trump Fake News Awards?
70
This came across when reading the excellent book The Deniers. The scientists covered had produced papers that trounced the Warmists in their own field but were still prepared to believe the Warmist propaganda from other fields.
80
It sounds like the reverse effect of when a professional in one field opines an opinion in another field. The two opinions are not equal, but are treated equal by most. Fruit Fly and Ancient Kangaroo Droppings specialists come to mind.
70
Alistair.
Good job, and I have seen this in action too. But now, it ts twice as bad as that.
Not only are the reporters/editors/publishers horribly inept in most of the areas they report, but the entire press from owner of a newspaper, television news, to publisher, to editor, to and to reporter, are allied strongly to a left political party. In the US the largest and most left wing major political party, the Democrat party, now controls the main stream media as strongly as any commissar or dictator. Their control is almost absolute. Fox News used to be aligned with the Republican Party (the Party of Lincoln), but now it is moving more and more to the left. There are some talk radio programs that are conservative, but they do not have nearly the reach and influence of a major newspaper or television network. The left also controls significant number of leftist web sites. But, there are also a significant number of conservative web sites. But again, they lack the reach of a major newspaper or major television network and thus, the majority of Americans get their news from the MSM.
These reasons are why it was such a great thing when President Trump was elected and in his first year as President he has made substantial progress.
90
Its worth making sure children know that the MSM cant be trusted.
We as adults knwo the MSM is heavily controlled by those who would happily see us tagged and bagged put in in places with 10′ high wire fences around them…..conveying this to kids is not easy.

WOW! There was a time CNN would have pulled the plug on that interview. “Sorry we have lost Steven, we’ll try to get him back” type of thing.
But the US at least has Fox which will give the President some good press, here we have no news outlet that will. I cancelled my subscription to The Australian because they only quoted WaPo and NYT.

“I cancelled my subscription to The Australian because they only quoted WaPo and NYT”
I happen to speak both Arabic and Farsi. I have lived all over the Middle East and was present in both the Egyptian (as a child) and Iranian revolutions. My father was very nearly killed in the Israeli invasion of Egypt in 1956 – and 31 of his civilian mine workers were killed by them in Sinai.
In view of the above, I consider myself a bit of an expert on the Middle East.
I subscribed to the Financial Times for over 30 years and was forced to cancel my subscription because they blocked my comments on their patently absurd and dishonest reporting on events in Syria. Like with Australian media, they pretended that a bunch of “rebels” (from over 80 countries) had suddenly appeared – fully trained and equipped – and defeated the armies of both Iraq and Syria before grabbing an area of land greater than the UK.
Their Zionist writers – who never spent any time in the region and spoke only English – presented such a ridiculous piece of fiction that I was obliged to reconsider everything else written in the newspaper. Eventually, I found it took too much intellectual effort to unearth the truth lurking behind each article and cancelled.
Now, I daily check the news online from places like RT.com and the thriving US-based alternative media.

Hi Robert,
Happy New Year to you and yours.
I hope it does top the Oscars because that will indicate that “they” have not been able to adjust to the new reality. That means President Trump will be a shoe in for a second term.
President Trump is the personification of disruptive technology.
He is the Facebook, the Google and the Internet of the human personality.
Those who throw the mud are the Luddites; the legacy personalities; the second tier operatives. They cannot evolve in a way that enables them to deal with what is happening to them. They continue to play the same old cards. They expect consistency of message; predictability of theme; and, symmetry in power.
They expect to be able to resist by using old tools. A bit like Fairfax Media Limited desperately trying to counter disruptive technology with discounted newspaper advertising rates.
But Trump is none of that. He is asymmetric, unpredictable and purposely inconsistent.
His strategy confounds his enemies at home and abroad. He is Sun Tsu reincarnated.
May his enemies stay forever embedded in their delusions of how the human spirit functions.

All warfare is based on deception.
Hence, when able to attack, we must seem unable; when using our forces, we must seem inactive; when we are near, we must make the enemy believe we are far away; when far away, we must make him believe we are near. Hold out baits to entice the enemy. Feign disorder, and crush him.
Sun Tzu

POTUS DJT VSG clearly uses humour to great effect, a dimension of human interaction that the monosynaptic LEFT deserted a long time ago.
80
O/T but this statement about AGL sums up the deceit and lack of concern for this country.
AGL has mastered the art of corporate hypocrisy, shouting from subsidised solar-panelled rooftops that it’s “getting out of coal”.
What it is doing is setting up a ‘system’ in which it plans to offload meaningful generating capacity, in favour of thoroughly unreliable wind and solar generation, backed up by fast-start Open Cycle Gas Turbines; highly inefficient and costly to run.
And grabbing the RECS to enhance the bottom line
300
Sceptical Sam
Ian1946,
It’s a short term, naive, losing strategy.
AGL assumes that government renewables strategy is here for the long term. It isn’t.
When businesses rely on government policy initiatives for their profits they are on very dangerous ground. So are their stock-holders.
When government policy changes, those businesses go broke. Think: tax driven forestry schemes.
Sell AGL. Its strategic thinking is juvenile.
Stick with it and lose your shirt.
220
I got out of AGL.
Having changed my provider I was then rung by AGL in an effort to determine why a dear and valued customer was leaving them.
So I told them.
‘You smug git advert pissed me off.’
Doubt I would have had any real effect of them overall, but I did enjoy my little ‘reasons why you suck’ speech.
180
Somehow I think there will be a big showdown between Trump and the Clinton Foundation as well as the MSM. The hatred towards Trump by so many on the left is at dangerous levels, almost to the point of destabilising the whole nation. Why don’t they just wait for the next election and let the people decided? I know the left hate democracy, what little the US still has. Much like here.
220
Gitmo is being upgraded to accomodate VIP clients, extra Marines have been posted in and a contingent of National Guard Provos has been seconded for a number of months. This is a direct response to the Presidential Order which strengthens the RICO act that Trump signed around Xmas time.
At least I hope this is all true. Who knows?
70
Me too!
There are strong signs that the US situation is coming to a head. Trump and his team clearly have the measure of the opposition but its shear depth is enormous. I am expecting this month to be “interesting”. Trump has a plan but I believe the opposition might also have one. There is talk that the opposition are both moving weapons or explosives through Canada and of installing UN troops and vehicles in the US, for instance.
There is a place to go to see some information about the Trump organisation’s thoughts here: https://www.reddit.com/r/CBTS_Stream/ (OK, I can’t guarantee that is what Trump is thinking but there are some interesting postings to the 4chan and 8chan boards by a poster known as Q who asks lots of incisive questions and is believed to be very close to Trump. Well worth a read.)
There was some stuff about Australia recently as well. Jerome Corsi has decoded some of Q’s cryptic posts here. (Oz appears part way through.) https://www.scribd.com/document/368625779/JEROME-CORSI-Decode-of-Multiple-Messages-by-QAnon-filed-on-8chan-The-Storm-Saturday-Jan-6-2018-Vers-16-0

Yes “coming to a head” is saying it mildly. Even a few people I talk to hear hate Trump so much they say some really dumb and terrible things I wouldn’t even wish on my worst enemies. If Trump is taken down by whatever means before the next Presidential election I would not be surprised if a civil war broke out. Yet it all can be avoided simply by waiting for that next election and let the people decide. One conclusion that can be taken from this is the modern left hate to lose. The more militant ones hate it so much they prefer to destroy a whole nation and burn it to the ground just to prove a simple minded point that they hate to be on the losing side. It only proves the militant left are very dangerous mentally sick people, as much if not more so than the militant right. The world would be a much better place if we could ship both types to another planet and let them fight it out among themselves.
130
The perfectly formed image of the left is using its Communist lackies to murder the Russian Romanov royal family in the early 1900s.
If you want a symbol of what they will do in any nation to hold power, this is it.
Oh and Stalin and his mass starvation of dissenters etc
20
The military loves Trump and he’s their commander in chief so not expecting a coup from the UN or the democrats any time soon .

I’ve seen an advert on the net where the Guardian is now asking for the public to contribute $10.00/month to access their news. They explain the reason is that advertising revenue has dropped dramatically & they need the revenue to continue presenting their fantastic columns to the public.
Maybe they should be saying that because of their biased leftist crap, presented as news, the public are turning away from their rag & the resultant drop in ratings causes advertisers to withdraw their business.
I would encourage people tired of leftist crap presented as factual news to advise advertisers that they’ll be boycotting their products as long as they advertise with that publication. You’ll be surprised at the reaction from advertisers. Besides the Guardian others suffering from a drop in advertising revenue like the NYT & CNN will learn from he had way. Just wait until investors start walking away!! We can make a difference.
160
Well a lot of their columns are fantastic, or at least those I read on links from people who I suspect aren’t going to pay $10 a month either.
30
The Guardian is losing money every year as sales shrink. They have also lost a lot of non-job adverts from the public sector. If the losses continue their trust fund will be empty in less than a decade. So some good news there then.
70
The business model seems to be if your customers are unhappy and your sales are dropping, reduce the quality of your product and charge more for it. This seems to be based upon the notion that if a customer is foolish enough to continue buying your lousy product, they will be foolish enough to pay more for an even worse one. The question is, who is the bigger fool, you or your customers? The eventual outcome will be both you AND your paying customers will become bankrupt.
As was said by Francisco in Atlas Shrugged, “…no man may be smaller than his money.” The man will either be destroyed by his money or the man will destroy his money. Your challenge is to keep the small men from destroying both you and your money in the process of destroying themselves and their money.
Reality is what it is and the consequences of ignoring that fact cannot be escaped.

The only news that’s fit to read, at least in respect of the US and mainly political issues is President Donald J. Trump’s Twitter feed. All else is lies. Even once reputable scientific journals and newspaper “journals of record” now lie. The rest of the world doesn’t even have a politician as a leader that is honest like Donald (although he is not really a politician).
242
It’s fascinating to me what can occur when a politician is elected based on what he says he will do, and then actually attempts to do most of what he said he would. Wow! Go Trump.
Now, is there any chance that some of our mealy-mouthed Pollies in OZ would have the cojones to do the same?
Nah…..I’m dreamin’…must be off my meds!

Greetings and Salutations to you, wal1957:
I feel your pain, more than you could ever know. Just recently, I was watching a series (I think produced in the U.K.) called WWII in Colour, on American Heroes Channel, which has many details I’ve never known before.
One segment was devoted to a dedicated group of Australian (and possibly some N.Z.’ also) who held out against Rommel at Tobruk for longer than anyone ever expected. It was fascinating that these soldiers had the “cajones” to fight the overwhelming Wehrmacht troops into a stalemate.
I do not know if there are any veterans of that engagement around today, but if there are, they need to be recognized and thanked, and paraded before present-day politicians. After that, let’s ask them where that spirit went!
Regards, Happy New Year, health, and prosperity to you,
The Mostest Deplorable-est Vlad the Impalerest, a crashing-est bore-est, and an even bigger-est bully-est (according to C.T.)
140
Vlad
The last “Rat of Tobruk” that I knew just cashed his chips at 102 so I’d reckon they’re getting scarce.
IIRC a lot of the artillery was British – apart from the “bush artillery”. A 25 pounder dug in to use open sights was rated pretty highly as an anti-tank gun.
And the things they did with Bren carriers.
80
Tobruk was garrisoned by the Australian 9th Division mostly, when Rommel laid siege to it. There may have been some Kiwis in there but it wouldn’t have been many. The idea was to deny the port facilities to the enemy. The New Zealand 2nd Division attacked the Afrika Korps as part of an Eighth Army offensive to break the seige and enable 9th Div to evacuate back to Egypt.
The ANZACs (Australia and New Zealand Army Corps) tradition dates back to before 1916 (WW 1) and came out of such cooperative engagements as that in both wars. Both nations have a Day of Remembrance for our war dead from both wars known as ANZAC Day, 25th April every year. The veterans are now very few indeed and those who are left are in their nineties. The tradition has given rise to decades of a (sort of) mostly (perhaps) usually good-natured rivalry between the two countries.
80
Another “Rat of Tobruk” I knew was in the 6th Division.
On their honours list was being in the first ever stopping of a blitzkrieg at Tobruk and the first stopping of the Japanese army on land at Milne Bay.

Abbott implemented, or tried to implement the promises he took to the election (including a few he shouldn’t have made) but was blocked by a populist senate and relentlessly and ruthlessly undermined by Turnbull, Pyne and Bishop who were supported in the end by the bed wetters. Although Abbot contributed to his fall, mostly by trying to befriend the Left (Maternity Leave Natasha Scott Despoya’s appointment etc), we would be in a much better place had he not had Turnbull in his government and had he a more cooperative and reasonable senate to deal with.

not Penrith, not Sydney, but now AUSTRALIA “became the hottest place on earth”!
8 Jan: SMH: Can the power grid survive another heatwave?
by Cole Latimer
On Sunday, Australia became the hottest place on earth, stretching the east coast’s energy grid as it attempted to supply the increased demand…
Grattan Institute energy director Tony Wood told Fairfax Media the grid performed well, and AEMO had learnt the lessons of last summer.
“They’ve learnt from the experience of not being prepared,” Mr Wood said.
However, this was helped by the fact the heatwave event occurred over a weekend in early January as opposed to later in the year, or during the business week when most heavy industries are operating at scale…
As such, it did not require any major power users, such as smelters, to reduce their energy consumption.
Renewable energy also played a role in supporting the NEM’s reliability, with wind, solar, and hydro providing up to 41 per cent of Victoria’s energy, meeting 36 per cent of that state’s peak demand…READ ALL

8 Jan: ABC: NSW heatwave: Sydney swelters then storms as humid conditions continue
Storm warnings for a significant part of New South Wales have been cancelled as the state cools after a blistering weekend.
The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) had warned of severe thunderstorms and damaging winds on Monday evening in and around Scone, Wagga Wagga, Griffith, Narrandera, Tibooburra, Cobar, Bourke, Wilcannia, White Cliffs, Wanaaring, Ivanhoe and Brewarrina.
The warnings were cancelled just before 11:00pm AEDT…
On Sunday, a reading of 47.3 degrees Celsius was recorded in Penrith by the late afternoon, making it the hottest temperature recorded in Sydney since 1939. It was also the hottest city on Earth…
The Australian and England cricket teams suffered temperatures in the 50s out on the field at the Sydney Cricket Ground, with England captain Joe Root taken to hospital, battling a stomach bug and exhaustion…

MSNBC is militantly opposing Trump, not by physically violent means, but by militantly spreading lies, disinformation and half truths. The modern left is like that though, when they don’t get get their way they get malicious, while the right just sucks it in and waits for an election to change things up, as was done under Obama. Unfortunately, what the left wants today is counterproductive and generally harmful to the electorate, so it’s a loose/loose situation for the people, whether or not the left gets its way.

I noticed the practice of blending opinion with news when I was in High School ca 1953. I was reading a Time Magazine news article and was dismayed at the presentation of obvious fact free opinion in it. From that time (pun intended) on, I ignored Time Magazine content.
I was a fan of Scientific American but a few years later, I noticed the same thing in its so called scientific articles. I let my subscription run out. Over the years, I sampled several issues and continued to find the same thing only worse. I even wrote a letter to the editor about it. My letter was ignored.
The infection spread to include nearly every news source until I even stopped reading the newspapers for anything but the classified ads and comics section. Then, when the comics became infected, I became less confident in the classified ad section.
By the 1990s, the so called National News networks were a lost cause. I stopped watching the news except for the weather. Sadly, even the weather “news” became so contaminated that with only a few exceptions, it too became a lost cause. Too much “global” cooling/warming/changing/disruption backed up with synthetic facts (lies, distortions, misrepresentation, and dropped context).
Today, I read Fox News with a jaundiced eye. My assessment of Fox News is the least contaminated “news” source available but it too is falling down the same rabbit hole.
Postmodernism and authority centered fact free “truth” and fantasy use of language has become the expected. Reference to what actually is, is a rare occurrence except for a few blogs and individualized sources such as here.
When the news becomes fake and language is determined by fantasy, civilization is on the way out. It is only a matter of time. That is unless enough of us will rediscover reality and fight to stay in contact with it. It is a simple matter of either one or the other but not both.

Climate Change and the Iranian Protests
Jimmy Carter’s energy policy was to tell people to “wear a sweater,” President Obama’s energy policy was to build Quixotic Wind and Solar farms and force everyone to buy extremely expensive, dangerous eco-unfriendly energy efficient light bulbs. President Trump’s energy policy doubles as a National Security Policy and will result in more abundant, greater diversity, and cheaper energy for America and the world. The secondary benefit is a bankrupt Iran, Russia and North Korea, and greater freedom, peace, and hope around the World. What will be the contribution of the AGW Liberals? To fight president Trump every opportunity they can get. Liberals are simply a Tyrant’s best friend.

You mention Russia and bankruptcy as a result of Trump’s energy policy.
That is an issue for Russia but not its biggest one.
Before Trump (BT), Russia has been on a multi-issue decline for years.
This is becoming very noticeable in its demographic trajectory, namely an ageing and declining native population.

Obviously, Germany is not alone. The same applies in spades to the USA, UK, France, Italy, Spain, Netherlands, Sweden etc. Soon enough, Russia, Poland, Hungary, Belarus, Czechia and Slovakia will be the remaining reservoirs of native Europeans.
FYI, life expectancy in Russia has increased dramatically since the American “advisers” left (i.e. the Chicago School). Also, around 2 million educated and productive Ukrainians have moved there since the CIA putsch in Kiev.

It’s worth considering that most of the decision-mongering left seems insulated from the economics of reality.
They work in government, Universities, Trade Union Leadership, foundations and foundation supported non-profits.
The media used to be in that group, but are perhaps feeling more stress, thus their heightened insistence of returning to the good old days to liberal politically enforced hegemony.
Their “concerns” have little to do with the basic problem facing most voters – economic survival.
With the megaphone, they have prospered by trumpeting the “good” they do, with the cost of funding their
privilege hidden in plain site.
But perhaps there is a Dickensonian moment here, as the ghost of Trump future asks, whether they are not themselves part of the surplus population. Are the federal folks, will 160% of the typical private sector compensation, and unbelievable job security regardless of behavior, beginning to tremble a bit? Are the universities beginning to hear whistling on the wind that perhaps they are no longer essential, having abandoned education for inculcation? Are the “advocates” and “activists”, whose caterwauling is often supported by public funds, trembling in fear of having to actually work for living?
Reality, no matter how improbable the messenger, is disruptive to an unreal world.
80
It remains to be seen if the mainstream media pick up on this in the Times and reported in the Australian, of course. “Global Cooling a reality”. Of course it is dismisse as just “the weather”. What else can you say when iguanas fall out of the trees in Florida?
70
As for frozen sharks on the beach, surely that is uncommon and must be viewed as slightly more serious than a slight variation on a normal winter? Still while weather is used to extract trillions from democracies, no admission will be made. Climate Scientology will still be promoted furiously by the communists of the world in league with the industrialists and bankers. It is the most successful fr*ud in history.
The real tragedy is that in the thirty years and trillions wasted, we could have freed mankind from burning any fuel at all but until someone changes the immutable laws of chemistry, the making of metals and concrete will always generate CO2. So will all life on earth. As the sixth element of the periodic table, Carbon cannot be banned by Greenpeace or any government.

Joanne, I love the way you write. You are incredible. No one else writes like you. It’s spicy and delicious. Spicy, because you strip them of their credibility and delicious because you do it in such a sophisticated way. You are truly special. And thank you for your never-ending work for us. Sincerely, Faye

One way in which the press present just one side of the warming/cooling story is that a 0.8C change in an average is supposed to be a disaster. Where? It hasn’t happened anywhere. The seas have not risen. No country is drowned. In fact no one has even noticed a rise.
However Prof Weiss’s (at 17:05) predicted -2C decrease would dramatically change life for many of the people who live between 22.5North and 60North. That’s 60% of the world’s population. 50% above 27North and the glaciers reached 40 North. That’s a people sandwich. Cold is to be feared, even in Florida.
As for the arctic, with a current average of 0C, a drop of 2C would mean solid ice all year and where would the polar bears live? The seals and and the huge populations which migrate north in the summer as the ice melts. Save the polar bears! Burn coal.
So while pretending cooling is just natural variation and hot days have the DNA of climate change, the danger is cooling. Our brief run of 10,000 years since the last ice age may be ending. As the world covers in ice, more light is reflected and it cools faster, the ice stays in summer and the seas drop. It would be the opposite of BREXIT. You could walk to France. Again.
60
As the world cools on schedule, the sad fantasy that mankind controls CO2 levels and that CO2 levels control the weather will be exposed. After all, we were supposed to be +2C warmer by 2100 and CO2 levels are still steadily climbing despite Australia crippling the country for the beliefs of politicians! Ask the iguanas and the sharks. Same set.

‘As the world covers in ice, more light is reflected and it cools faster, the ice stays in summer and the seas drop. It would be the opposite of BREXIT. You could walk to France. Again.’
They would build a high wall to keep the rabble out, but we are getting ahead of ourselves.
The Holocene has passed its used by date but the dip that is coming may only last 30 years and warming could recommence. A slow drift into a mini ice age has its ups and downs.

I see where there are new findings about a climatic shift occurring some 125,000 years ago. Seems an axis tilt brought on a wet phase in the glacial, permitting settlement of regions such as the Sahara and Arabian peninsular.
The “fascinating discovery” was made by researchers at the University of Hawaii “using complex computer programmes to measure the effects of global warming and sea level patterns on human migrations over tens of thousands of years”. (So, a bit naughty, but basically correct from the point of view of green liturgy and theology.)
It’s so odd that “fascinating discoveries” can be made about climate change in remote eras while there is dead silence on profound climate change within our own geological epoch of the last fifteen thousand years. One would think that the recent, radical thrust down then up from the Younger Dryas to the Optimum, the Storegga Slides, flooding of Bass Strait etc might rate a mention or two. But no. As for discussing Africa and climate in the last couple of thousand years…you know what happens to “fascinating discoverers” who bend precious hockey sticks!
50
The main change in climate that is likely to free up land for settlement is “global thawing”.
Without going back to graphs it’s not possible to accurately place this event at the end of the previous glaciation or actually within the last interglacial.
Whatever, it’s good that they at least are acknowledging past “climate change” which has up till now been a forbidden topic.
KK

Hi Mosomo, just had a look at the graphs and 125,000 years ago places their “study” right in the middle of the previous interglacial. It’s interesting that they refer to this find as a “wet phase” rather than the more appropriate warm period.
It’s very hard to get rain during a glaciation when all of the raw material is stored in massive icefields across most of the northern hemisphere.:-)
They have neatly sidestepped the inconvenient truth that the period they are describing was an uncharacteristic warm period during the last half a million years and just preceded the last glaciation by maybe 10,000 years.
Still they claim that the discovery was only made possible by enormous computing power.
Progress in exposing the truth of the past half a million years?
It might suggest that CO2 is innocent and that orbital mechanics is the culprit.

re SMH article (see comment #12) –
Can the power grid survive another heatwave?
by Cole Latimer
On Sunday, Australia became the hottest place on earth, stretching the east coast’s energy grid as it attempted to supply the increased demand…
***”Renewable energy also played a role in supporting the NEM’s reliability, with wind, solar, and hydro providing up to 41 per cent of Victoria’s energy, meeting 36 per cent of that state’s peak demand”…
given the article was about the “Penrith” story, why choose renewable figures for Victoria?
where to find the figures for NSW?
Natalie Peters, sitting in for Mike McClaren on 2GB Overnight program spoke about figures of 9-10 percent at “peak heat” time in Sydney?/NSW? for wind and solar. Peters claimed she got her figures from LiveGeneration, but I can’t find that online.
this interview with Labor’s Luke Foley is infuriating, as he claims to be “agnostic” about where energy comes from, but then pushes solar/batteries etc., whilst claiming – deceptively – that “private” investors globally consider it uneconomic to build new coal-fired plants, and not mentioning the 1,600 plants under construction, or being planned.

KK, I think acknowledging past climate change provided it’s remote is an often used stunt by the climate industry. The climate of our own epoch is what should concern them and never does. It’s denial by evasion which I call Holocene denial.
Radical climate change is a recent phenomenon as well as a remote one. What should concern us is the effect of climate on civilisations. Rameses fibbed about beating the Hittites but those Bronze Age cultures sure had weather problems, and a millennium before that the Old Kingdom bore the brunt of the 2200 BC cool/dry event. It’s not about using climate as a facile explanation for everything: it’s about concerning ourselves with what should most concern us when we are talking about climate.
Of course it’s good to hear someone’s theory about what went on a million years ago or a hundred thousand years ago. But I need to hear about my own little patch of interglacial. Cooling means drought for much (not all) of the world, and it means greatly reduced agricultural production in northern areas like Canada upon which the world has come to rely for its stocks of food. The problems of Europe in the 14th and 17th centuries, the disasters of the late Yuan and the Ming are not remote and are not unconnected with climate. We need to think harder about all that. For some these periods are old history, but from a climate student’s viewpoint they should be late yesterday evening or today early morning.
I don’t buy that a “quiet sun” now means global cooling for sure. The sun was quiet in the WW1 period which brought cold and mud to Europe but heat and drought to Oz. Then the sun got busy again. However I do think we need to think of the ramifications of yet another dip in world temps, whether due to major volcanism or longer term factors or all of the above.

German political parties negotiating a new coalition government are prepared to drop the country’s domestic 2020 climate goal, it emerged on Monday, although the government is already paying for foreign initiatives that could theoretically narrow the gap to the target.
8 Jan: Reuters: German coalition negotiators agree to scrap 2020 climate target – sources
by Markus Wacket
Germany’s would-be coalition partners have agreed to drop plans to lower carbon dioxide emissions by 40 percent from 1990 levels by 2020, sources familiar with negotiations said on Monday — a potential embarrassment for Chancellor Angela Merkel.
Due to strong economic growth and higher-than-expected immigration, Germany is likely to miss its national emissions target for 2020 without any additional measures.
Negotiators for Merkel’s conservative bloc and the centre-left Social Democrats (SPD) told Reuters the parties had agreed in exploratory talks on forming a government that the targeted cut in emissions could no longer be achieved by 2020.
Instead, they would aim to hit the 40 percent target in the early 2020s, the sources said, adding that both parties are still sticking to their goal of achieving a 55 percent cut in emissions by 2030.
The deal would represent something of a U-turn for Merkel, who has long presented herself as an advocate of climate protection policies on the international stage…

31 Dec: Hobart Mercury: Talking Point: Government excels on carbon action
by JOSH FRYDENBERG
IN his latest polemic against the Turnbull Government ***Peter Boyer overlooks significant action the Government is taking to reduce carbon emissions both at home and abroad (Talking Point, December 27)…
We are also seeing in the words of the Clean Energy Council, an “unprecedented wave of investment” in renewables with more than $9 billion worth of projects and more than 4500 megawatts of capacity either being built or committed this year.
The Turnbull Government is also supporting innovation which is driving down technology costs. The Clean Energy Finance Corporation has made more than $4 billion in investment commitments, around $3.5 billion under the Coalition, and the Australian Renewable Energy Agency has made more than $1 billion of grants, around half under the Coalition. There is much work to be done, but it is clear policy measures are working…
Boyer says the Government has a weak 2030 target, forgetting that on a per capita and GDP intensity basis, it’s one of the highest in the G20 and involves more than a 50 per cent reduction.
Boyer criticises using international permits to meet Australia’s Paris commitment. He overlooks the fact there are more than 60 countries that have indicated that as part of the Paris accord, they want to participate in the market once international rules are finalised. These include Canada, New Zealand, Japan and South Korea. Recognising the Government’s commitment to seek reduction at lowest cost, we are giving in principle support to permits with a final decision by 2020 on timing, quantity and quality…

5 Jan: WaPo: Interior rescinds climate, conservation policies because they’re ‘inconsistent’ with Trump’s energy goals
By Juliet Eilperin
The Interior Department’s No. 2 official issued a secretarial order just before Christmas rescinding several climate change and conservation policies issued under the Obama administration, saying they were “inconsistent” with President Trump’s quest for energy independence.
Secretarial Order 3360, signed Dec. 22 by Interior Deputy Secretary David Bernhardt, wipes away four separate directives and policy manuals aimed at showing departmental employees how to minimize the environmental impact of activities on federal land and in federal waters. It also calls for the review of a fifth, which applies to the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska. Instead, it directs officials to reinstate and update guidance issued during the final year of George W. Bush’s second term by Jan. 22.
The Interior Department aims to mitigate any negative environmental impacts in transparent ways that follow federal law and “are consistent with direction provided by Congress” with “a level of certainty to all involved parties,” the order states.
While the documents are highly technical, the move underscores the extent to which Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke and his deputies are uprooting policies and procedures aimed at factoring climate and environmental effects into the department’s decision-making…
Zinke has been sharply critical of the idea of “mitigation,” where the federal government requires companies to pay to offset the negative environmental impact their activities have on public land…
“Some people would call it extortion,” Zinke said of a power line company’s having to pay a huge fee to offset its project’s impact, according to an audio recording of the session. “I call it un-American.”…

the “billionaire environmentalist” realises “CLIMATE CHANGE” won’t cut it with voters:
8 Jan: NYT: Coral Davenport: Billionaire to Spend $30 Million on 2018 Elections. His Aim: Impeach Trump
Tom Steyer, the billionaire environmentalist and Democratic political donor, announced Monday that his advocacy group, NextGen America, will spend $30 million to help Democrats retake the House in 2018, with the aim of eventually impeaching President Trump.
Mr. Steyer also announced that he would not run for Senate or governor in California, as had been speculated. Mr. Steyer, who was a major donor to President Barack Obama’s 2012 campaign, emerged as the largest single political donor of the 2014 midterm election. His group spent $74 million to back Democrats that year, and $87 million in the 2016 elections.
But most of the candidates he backed in those elections lost. This time, he said, his strategy will shift.
***Rather than focusing on climate change as an issue to rally young voters, as he had tried since 2010, he will focus on whatever issues will help Democrats win a majority in the House — in order to impeach Mr. Trump.
“We are really focused on removing this president,” Mr. Steyer said…

pat, I think this is a very important story. It shows that the ‘Climate Crisis’ propaganda isn’t working, even on the “young voters” who have been relentlessly brainwashed all their lives.
Good news.
20
I think alot of fake news can be explained by a comment on how the New York Times does journalism I received, which went something like this:
‘We don’t report to be balanced. We report the facts that people on twitter are talking about’.
This was in response to why the New York Times reported on Trump threatening N Korea and potentially violating twitter policy, but not reporting on Kim Jong doing the same or worse.
From this I concluded that they have a policy that facts are essentially determined by social choice, which is why they will never get it.. I also suspect this stems from media courses being taken over by nonsense post-modernism/socialism, where truth is whatever you want to believe, and report.
Objective methods of verification and standards have gone, which means this style of crap media will continue because they are not addressing what causes it, facts are not determined by some kind of social media choice.
60
In other words the MSM is one huge echo chamber. It’s becoming deafening. Can’t wait for it to self destruct.
30
The decline of the establishment media has been going on for decades now. The emergence of “fact checkers” was a sign of their declining influence. The “Fact Checkers” were created to support the establishment media and it actually worked to some extent for a time. But now the people have caught on to the scheme when time after time they have seen the “fact Checkers” obfuscate and lie as they support the establishment media talking points. Over the year the most common tactic of both the media and the “fact checkers” was to lie by omission. But now as we have seen, the establishment media is turning more and more to lies by commission and direct blatant lies and nastier confrontation of government officials with those lies. They are so desperate and it is so obvious.
60
Yes it’s obvious but only to those who have a brain and are not too lazy to use it and think with a vision to the future. I still think the majority don’t fall into that category, and so we end up with the incompetent government we deserve.
20
This pretty much says it all about the state of the establishment media:

For 30 years I’ve lived in Italy, railing against the terrible journalism here. It’s 100% unapologetically opinion from one side or another of the political spectrum, so that one can go directly to the source one wants to hear at any time. Often politics is handled like football rather than governance.
So, I have always been able to fall back on the Anglo Saxon example of fair journalism, with it’s sharp division between fact and opinion. It was always a breath of fresh air, and when the internet started delivering that journalism to my doorstep I stopped taking in the Italian crap altogether.
My, how things have changed. Yesterday on my drive to work I caught two pieces on NPR where the host journalist “interviews” the story journalist as if the latter is some sort of expert in the particular area. The conversation invariably ends with a “what do you think” question and the second journalist’s opinion on the significance or the cause…. Who cares what this journalist thinks?! Why are we being subjected to this person’s opinion anyway?? I can get that at any dinner party.

9 Jan: AP: Energy ‘deal’ news irritates in German government talks
BERLIN — Talks to form a new German government involving Chancellor Angela Merkel’s conservatives and the biggest center-left party pressed ahead Tuesday amid irritation over a negotiator’s announcement that a deal on energy policy had been reached.
The comment from conservative negotiator Armin Laschet that discussions on prospective energy policy had wrapped up reminded some of Merkel’s previous, failed coalition talks with two smaller parties, which were marred by constant jockeying over tentative results…
Laschet told a business group Monday that the two sides had wrapped up talks on energy policy, but gave no details. German media reported that the agreement involves pushing back Germany’s target for reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 2020.
In response, Social Democrat negotiator Ralf Stegner posted a “musical tip” on Twitter: “Don’t Speak” by U.S. rock band No Doubt. And the leader of the party’s parliamentary group, Andrea Nahles, said as she arrived for Tuesday’s negotiations that talk of interim results was “very annoying.”…

In 1917 there was a U.S. congressman called Callaway, who stumbled unto some shocking information. He didn’t feel like glossing over these horrific facts and decided to expose this truth in, you guessed it, the U.S. congress, in hopes that it would shock people enough to do something about this scandal, for that is what it really was. Almost a hundred years ago, he told Congress in a speech the following:
In other words: Top U.S. bankers conspired to influence the policy of all U.S. newspapers, by just buying the editors and so the editorial control over 25 top newspapers that set the tone of U.S. public opinion on decisive matters like national and international finances, defense and war, etc. If you think that most these newspapers reported Callaway’s speech, you will not be surprised that very few did and then only buried a small report on some inside page only, instead of what should have been a major screaming headline on every front page.
Now if you think that Callaway just heard some rumor and perhaps this wasn’t true, you’d be surprised to know that another famous banker called David Rockefeller came right out in 1991 and confessed to the same policy and control over the media since 1950, which shows that it was never stopped! Rockefeller said in his 1991 speech:
Rockefeller was saying that the directors of the major U.S. papers and magazines protected the secret plan of the intellectual elite of world bankers for a one world government for 50 years! That was high treason!
Now if you think that individual journalists working in these newspapers and magazines would expose such treason, you would do well to pay attention to what one of the most famous ones among them said. John Swinton, the former chief of staff of The New York Times, called by his peers, “The Dean of his profession,” was asked to give a toast before the New York Press Club. He rose and gave this toast:
[When quotes are this hot they really need attribution. Stay skeptical. But thank you. I have not checked out the veracity bar the last. Apparently the Swinton quote is true, and he was editor of the NY Times, though died in 1901, so he was talking of the civil war (ish) era or thereabouts. http://www.rense.com/general20/yes.htm. Progressives are Out Of Touch on a Biblical Scale; NAACP Should Demand Re-Direction of Climate Change Funding to Inner-Cities
If you go into a black community and poll the residents, I feel confident that none, not a single resident, would rank preventing climate change as one of their top 10 priorities. The social and economic statics of the black community are horrifying, and yet on MLK day 2018, the NAACP claims that “MLK’s Vision Can’t Be Achieved Without Fighting Global Warming.” This, out of all examples, highlights the complete and absolute corrupting force that Climate Change has become. No example I have found demonstrates that absurdity of Climate Change more than the NAACP betraying those whom they claim to represent, and putting the needs of the Democratic Party above them.
