The Five “Valve Turners” broke in and turned off valves on the Keystone Pipeline and four other cross-border pipelines — in Washington, Montana and Minnesota. They are in their fifties and sixties and brave enough to risk jail, but not apparently brave enough to read skeptical material that might show that the actions they think are noble are really misguided, illegal, narcissistic, risky stunts as well as being pointless and inconvenient to thousands.
Foster, who is 53, was charged with criminal trespass and criminal mischief, conspiracy to commit criminal mischief and reckless endangerment. At his bond hearing in Cavalier, N.D., he learned that he faced a maximum sentence of more than 26 years.
The NY Times gives them hero treatment. Scott of the Antarctic could not get a write up this nice:
What Foster didn’t expect was that once he’d broken through the chain-link fence, he would be briefly overwhelmed by the magnitude of what he was about to do. He faced away from the biting wind, and allowed himself to cry. He then put a gloved hand on the steel wheel, which was almost three feet across and mounted vertically as if on the helm of a ship, and began to turn it. For long minutes it spun easily, but then both the wheel and the ground below his feet began to shake. Foster had been told to expect this, but still he hesitated. When he resumed turning, he had to throw his body into the task, at times dangling from the wheel to coax it downward. Finally, he could wrestle it no farther, and the shaking stopped. He felt a profound sense of relief. He replaced the lock on the wheel with a new padlock, sat down and, breathing heavily, began to record himself on his phone. “Hey, I’ve never shot video for grandkids that I don’t have yet,” he told the camera, “but I want any grandkids, or grandnephews and nieces or whatever, anybody in any family tree of mine, to know that once upon a time people burned oil, and they put it in these underground pipes, and they burned enough, fast enough, to almost cook you guys out of existence, and we had to stop it — any way we could think of.”
Not necessarily a harmless protest:
Lonny Johnson, the TransCanada employee who visited the site after Foster turned the valve, testified that the valve wasn’t designed to be closed against pressure as Foster had done, but that he’d found no cracks or leaks when he inspected it. The prosecutors, however, argued that a leak could have caused a fire or explosion or polluted the nearby Pembina River.
One trial ended in a hung jury, and that Valve Turner got 2 days jail, plus 30 days community service. He should have been been given 30 days boot camp with skeptics as therapy for his delusions and a lesson to read both sides of the story so he is not an easy victim for rent-seeking, self-serving industries and bankers.
Foster however got a real one year sentence:
Judge Fontaine … rejected the necessity defense because, in her view, there were still legal means to address climate change. “If you can’t convince the government, then you convince the people,” she said, “and it seems to me the way you convince the people in this world is by 60-second sound bites, by commercials.”
Commercials cost thousands and are unattainable for many. Someone should tell the judge about blogs, radio interviews and cartoons. Then again, perhaps she did say that.
…“Everything about you, and everything you’ve said to me, is this was the right thing to do, this is what I’m called to do, this is what I have to do. So nothing about that tells me you wouldn’t do the same thing next month, next year, next week.”
Judge Fontaine sentenced Foster to three years in prison, with two of those years to be suspended and served on supervised probation. Jessup was given a suspended sentence of two years.
Michael Foster and Emily Johnston set up 350.org.
Foster, a family therapist, longtime environmentalist and father of two….
Check the irony. He’s a former family therapist, now divorced and estranged from his own kids. I can’t throw in a wry line. This is just sad:
When Foster committed himself to the climate movement, he also recruited his children, then 8 and 10, to march and speak alongside him. His older child, now a cleareyed 16-year-old, says that both siblings were initially happy to participate — in part because it gave them a chance to spend time with their father, whom they saw less and less of as his activism increased. But before long, they felt pressured. “When we would try to refuse, when we would say, ‘Hey, I’m tired,’ or ‘Hey, I have homework,’ or ‘Hey, I have school today,’ it would be: ‘Don’t you care about the planet? Don’t you care about the future?’ ” the older child explains. “That felt awful, because of course we cared, of course we wanted to do our part. But it felt like he was using our voices to spread his message.”
He couldn’t let his family off the hook either, and resentments deepened. “When people asked me how things were going, how I was doing, I’d say, ‘He’s doing important stuff, and it matters,’ ” says his ex-wife, Malinda, who asked that her last name and her children’s names not be used to protect her family’s privacy. “I’d also say, ‘I really respect Gandhi, but I wouldn’t want to be married to him.’
Both Malinda and her older child say they felt constantly judged, and frustrated, by Foster’s inflexibility. In 2014, Malinda filed for divorce, and his children said they no longer wanted to be part of his activism — or part of his life.
The media, spineless politicians, and university academics who fail to do their jobs take advantage of weak-minded, obsessive types. That doesn’t excuse reckless action and personal responsibility. But taxpayer funded operatives shouldn’t be feeding that element with a personality flaw either.

A brainwashed idiot, trying to brainwash his kids about a non-existent problem.
I blame the liberal media and governments who have spread this nonsense.

These eco-activists seem to believe that they are answering a ‘higher calling’ and have a ‘right’ and perhaps even a duty to break the law to defend the planet on behalf of Gaia. They choose not to follow the laws and processes that democracy provides for but instead seek their desired ‘solutions’ by unilateral action outside of the law.
We have seen similar in the UK where Animal Rights Activists went from protest to ‘direct action’ against property and businesses including destruction of property and equipment, and that continues to this day. But from that emerged groups who went much further and not only threatened but carried out violent attacks on individuals, including on one occasion 8 pensioners who were attacked with pick axe handles by balaclava clad animal rights activists and ended up in hospital.
In an obscene example a group of activists dug up the body of a farming family’s grandmother and held this to ransom and would only return it if the family closed down their farm business.
A belief that your cause is “so just” that it entitles you to act outside of the laws of man is a step towards totalitarian behaviour and is a mindset that poses too many dangers towards society for it to be tolerated.
Religious beliefs of some form of ‘higher calling’ were evident during the Spanish Inquisition, they were totalitarian, violent and cruel in nature. Extremist Islamic jihadists seek to impose their own totalitarian vision of Islam upon all others using utmost barbarity, cruelty and violence.
That AGW is a religious belief has been much discussed. Believing yourself to be in service to a religious or quasi-religious belief and thus ‘outside the laws of man’ is a very slippery slope.
Jo, thanks for your advice.

You also have to ask: how did he get out there? Seems like an awful long way to walk.
Was his bolt-cutter flint? If not, how was it made?
What was he dressed in? He states that it was bitterly cold, so what was the origin of his clothes? (Good one that, as virtually any answer he gives would expose his hypocrisy!)
If you have worry yourself up about the harm you are doing to environment, beat yourself up about it, not everybody else.

Thankfully President Trump is turning off their tap of grant money. He didn’t wear a high viz vest and he had to shut it off under pressure. Lots of blowback was experienced from the Union of Concerned Scientists although they are probably more concerned that the free trips, lavish meetings and money for crap science is coming to a screeching halt.
I felt great despite their obvious discomfort.

But the problem with these people is their narcissism. Look at me, look at me they yell.

You would think after thirty years of this, people might look around and notice nothing had changed?
Not a single prediction has been right. The world is not warming. Everything is fine. New York is not under water.
The day after yesterday was fine. I would encourage anyone to go to the beach of their youth and
swear that the sea has gone up in their lifetime or that the winters were warmer.
In fact go to any port and look at the old wharves and show how much the sea has gone up.
The worst scare though is that things will get more ‘extreme’. No one has explained how CO2 does that? CO2 produced warming is a remotely plausible hypothesis but what explanation is there for CO2 produced extremism? Did someone just make that up?
So the promoters of this political science argue that while the last twenty years have not changed noticeably, they are as a group slightly warmer than the previous 10 years. So they argue about which of the Emperor’s New Clothes is more attractive.
Where oh where is this runaway, tipping point, rapid warming and sea rise?
Could this criminal vandalism be a perverse sign of frustration with the lack of any global warming. Across the world, this has been a particularly cold winter even in tropical Bangladesh. Snow in Paris. Snow in the Sahara. The terrible plane crash out of Moscow has just been blamed on frozen instruments. Clearly caused by Donald Trump and Global Warming.
340
Of course there is the rarely challenged logic that CO2 must go up because of fossil fuels. Nuts.
This ignores every bit of science and relies on the consensus belief that most of the air is above sea level. What do fish breathe then?
In fact 98% of all CO2 is in the ocean. If water temperature goes up even slightly, aerial CO2 will increase.
That’s the flat beer principle. Everyone knows it.
200
GASES IN AIR AND DISSOLVED IN SEA WATER AT EQUILIBRIUM WITH AIR
The percentage of gases in sea water is based on the total gases dissolved in sea water at equilibrium with air.
Gas Symbol % in Air % in Sea Water
Nitrogen N2 78.08 62.6
Oxygen O2 20.95 34.3
Argon Ar 0.934 1.6
Carbon Dioxide CO 2 0.033 1.4
As the first ten metres = 1 atmosphere, the first ten meters contains more air than the atmosphere.
You might also notice how compressible polar CO2 is 50x more concentrated. How does ocean acidification work again?
Now add the fact that the average depth of the oceans is 3.4km, so 340 atmospheres.
Our fossil fuel CO2 is insignificant in the equilibrium of gases.
Then consider that the lungs of the world are the oceans, which produce 2x as much O2 as the forests.
Still, we are told we have polluted the planet with our miniscule CO2. Once again, nuts!
270
Indeed! Using 0°C as reference, Oceanic CO2 becomes liquid at depths greater than 150m; and has density greater than water at depths greater than 1.5 km! Below that ocean becomes stratified with greater than 50% (by volume) CO2 below 4 km. O2 dissolves in both; but ‘fishies’ have a hard time breathing. Sharks are good to go!
All the best!-will-
71
Please understand that there must exist; static gravitational compression by this Earth’s mass of anything compressible; like any/all surround fluid! Below 150m sea level; fishies, whales, sharks, and submarines; can piss out liquid CO2 rather than exchange such as a gas!
All the best!-will-
32
I’ll never think of whales in quite the same way again.
40
Keith, consider the compressible! critters like yourself! In submarine very weak compressible critters (us), are protected by “pressure hull”. Usns cannot pee liquid CO2, but that submarine must do so each “time to clear baffles” at such depth. Your young whale has stomach muscles much stronger than the ‘pressure hull’ on any submarine! 🙂

“Everyone knows it”
That’s the problem TdeF, they aren’t taught this anymore. They don’t know it!
91
Spot on TdeF

TdeF: ah, but cold weather is just weather, whereas warm weather is climate change! Which means that we will soon have the interesting scenario of the weather getting colder and colder, while the climate gets warmer and warmer.

Not Rocky Racoon, then?
10
Seem to be pretty well ‘rugged-up’ in this period of ‘global warming’.
Just sayin’.
50
As is mentioned by TdeF above and known and accepted by all scientists with basic university degrees, there is no mechanism by which CO2 can adversely affect the atmospheric temperature.
Human origin CO2 is but a miniscule fraction of atmospheric CO2 and is neutralized within 7 years by natural sequestration processes and/or absorption into that great CO2 sink called the ocean.
That fact that we are now in the enlightened age of the 21st Century and politics is so disconnected from reality that it allows and even propagates this monstrous lie is almost beyond belief.
Bizarre. Bring on the Shamans.

That people will be Represented.
And Represented in a way that is honest and accurate in light of the known reality OR representative of the majority of citizens.

It’s time to make these puerile children understand that there are consequences for their actions.
I believe in the three strikes and you’re out philosophy.
first offence, guilty of damaging or obstructing public infrastructure. Penalty: A significant fine say $1000 and a restraining order restricting to 200 metres from the site.
Second offence at the same site, disobeying a court order/contempt of court. Penalty: A more significant fine say $3000 and 30 days jail.
Third offence at the same site, disobeying a court order/contempt of court. Penalty: One years jail, if it is new infrastructure under construction, jail until the project is complete, with a maximum of four years.
50
On the fourth offense they should be deported to North Korea. After all the leftists hate the rest of us and have praised North Korea on so many occasions.
40
First offence, year’s exile to Cuba. Second offence, Venezuela. Third offence, North Korea.
40
Oh, and if they survive that, and go for a fourth offence, let them spend the rest of their lives in any successful capitalist country, because that will give them the most angst of all.
30
I prefer, “Off wit der ‘eads’, or ‘into da volcano’!” Saves so much court expense! Are we running out of such Judicial ignorance\incompetence\folk?

Will,
I expect you could specify appropriate justice where the courts cannot or will not do it.
We think pretty much alike on one thing. Jail, even 26 years isn’t the right punishment.
40
Is “broken on the wheel” sufficient? How about repeated witch dunking (water-boarding) of several female congress critters\varmints, so very vocal? 🙂
11
Neck and arms in the stocks on the Capitol Mall for a few weeks with a big sign enumerating their sins is more like what I’ve been thinking.
But maybe we could follow the waterboarding with what I suggested.
I hate to use something from slate as an example but there weren’t very many examples that were: cartoon; large enough; neck in the hole; not likely to be controversial for other reasons than the method of shaming.
Slate is not my idea of good journalism but I’ll give them credit for the image.
10
Good luck with trying to reason with them. The problem is that they believe they are right and anyone who disagrees is completely wrong and must be doing so for evil motives.
They are entitled to protest against oil, gas or coal projects but they cross a line when they start to think that they can disrupt them, but have got away with it for years e.g. Greenpeace, the Sea Shepherd, and these valve turners are just doing the same. Should their actions cause a disaster they will dismiss any blame and say that “it proves how dangerous the project is” and it must be shut down. I cannot see any end until there are deaths and those responsible are convicted of murder.
40
These projects (keystone XL pipeline) are irretrievably dangerous! One small leak of that Alberta gunk into the Ogallala Aquifer and the whole US great plains becomes void of life! Alaska should have demonstrated the need for visible above ground pipelines with triple drip pans! Proper engineering can mitigate such danger, but then profits evaporate!

They’re ecoterrorist. They should be sent to Gitmo until the ecoterrorism threat is eliminated. Actions must have consequences that are severe enough to serve as deterrents to others – i.e., one of the major purposes of the criminal justice system.

I reckon give these lovers of nature and all things not human a heling hand to reach nirvana.
…strip them of their worldy possessions, their clothes, their internet…every scrap of modern technology and helidrop them into the heart of the Guatemala jungle. As far as possible from any human habitation (…about 10 kliks should do it) and let them embrace nature in all its glory!
30
There’s a Tom Clancy novel that ends exactly that way, with the eco-terrorists stripped of all and every modern facility and tool and convenience, and left to commune with nature, over 100km from anywhere in the South American jungle. In the novel, these same eco-terrorists were prepared to wipe out, kill, exterminate, by way of an engineered variant of the ebola virus, almost the entire human population to achieve their goal of “saving the planet”. Of course, Clancy’s good guys win the day.

The dumbells of journalism get published where the ones who know what the score is can’t even get their names mentioned.
When has it ever been otherwise? Global warming became the PC bandwagon cause on which to jump aboard a long time ago.
Let’s face it, Jo struggles to get along because she’s telling the world there is no problem, something believable because of the lack of real evidence to the contrary. But who will pay her for that? Who will listen to that? The ugly truth is that if you want to succeed financially, if you want to have a following that will fawn all over you, then you need to tell people they have a problem and you know how to solve it. Never mind what the truth is.

Yes, Yes, and Yes.
This site has done amazing things centred around the CAGW Myth that has enthralled modern society.
The capacity of shysters to missinform, restructure the production and pricing of electricity, arrange the imposition of “special” new taxes and much more, have all been examined, pulled apart and assessed on the Jonova blog.
The range of input and depth of understanding of the technical, political and financial aspects of CAGW demonstrated here is truly mind boggling and occasionally, when the brain gets dulled and exhausted, there is an outbreak of stupidity or humour to provide relief.
Thanks Jo.

I cannot say what I’m thinking about these — what shall I call them? Protesters is too lenient. Perhaps criminal is the right word? Jo would probably delete my comment if I said what I would like to say — or worse, ban me from the site.
I would make an appropriate public example of them but unfortunately the courts would not go for that.
Adults of their age should know better and the punishment should fit the real crime which is failure to be a responsible adult.
We fail in our basic responsibility to society when we fail to give anyone contemplating such action a good incentive to give what they would like to do a second and maybe even a third thought before doing anything.
Destruction of even the padlock on the surrounding gate, much less destruction of the chain or lock on the valve could have very far reaching consequences for the very thing these people say they’re protecting because they went on and closed the valves. Failure to understand is the worst crime of all in this climate change war.

The irony is that CO2 has no significant effect on climate. http://energyredirect3.blogspot.com/
70
Good outline Dan and good to see a mention of “relaxation time”. In previous comments I’ve mentioned that the “hold time” when CO2 absorbs IT is in the order of milliseconds, just to make the point that it is not hours or days as Global Warming theorists would have us believe.
CO2 in air is always in contact with other molecules and if it does selectively absorb a little bit more than a local nitrogen molecule, it is going to move to equilibrium with that parcel of air, Very Quickly.
KK
30
Autobloodycorrect, not IT its IR.
30
Keith, atmospheric CO2 absorbs little or no IR radiative emission (flux) from the Earth’s surface! The big scam is that ridiculous claim “All mass radiates EMR proportional to T^4”; such cannot and does not ever physically happen! Nor did any viable ‘Scientist’ ever claim such! That R.M.Goody & Y.L.Yung atmospheric physics text, continues to be propagated by academia; but has never been verified!

The problem here is a lack of security, if one was to drive on the Bore fields road from Roxby Downs to Bopeechee corner (Oodnadatta track) you will see several pumping stations which supply water to the mine.
To enter a pumping station you need to get past the razor wire, then an electric fence then very hungry feral dogs. This security system has been proven to be very successful at keeping stoopid greenies out.

Such a sad, illuminating story. Incredible that mainstream media have painted them as some sort of save the planet eco warriors. The real story here is that a former family therapist is so brainwashed about the threat of climate change that his ignorant cult view has made him use and cause psychological harm to his own children. He has ruined his family life and destroyed their childhood years, filling their heads with constant worry and guilt about climate change.
What next? Mass suicide / murder to protect future generations from ‘climate change’?

In the last 600 million years, CO2 has had no effect on climate, even when it was 17 times present level.
For several million years when CO2 level increased, global temperature decreased, and when CO2 decreased, global temperature increased, also for several millions of years.
The theory that CO2 is causing ”global warming” has only existed since carbon tax was invented!
QUOTE; ” If the observed facts do not agree with the theory, then no matter how elegant the theory, the theory is WRONG!” (Richard Feynman-Nobel prize physicist).
Only the ignorant and stupid believe this new ”global warming” myth.
Unfortunately there’s an awful lot of them around.
