Ponder the irony — MediaWatch is meant to be a media auditor, but it starts from the assumption that every government run collective is 100% accurate (at least on climate change). And unaudited UN committees are infallible too. Indeed newspapers have a duty to repeat what these committees say without questioning them. Host Paul Barry actually uses the word duty.
Once upon a time, the duty of investigative reporters was to to investigate, now their job is to be glorified marketing hacks advertising the latest government scheme to change the weather. What could possibly go wrong?
How about if governments set up all their institutes to find problems with CO2 and asked none of them to audit the others? What if whole government departments were tasked to slay the carbon dragon, and while exactly no groups anywhere were funded to find out if the sun controlled the climate instead? Using the MediaWatch Wand of Truth, only government scientists can criticize government scientists (and only then for five minutes until their uni trawls through their emails and sacks them). Thus and verily IPCC scientists should be obeyed.
MediaWatch marvels that the Australian Newscorp media can’t be bothered repeating the same overdone fake scare campaign for the 20th time. Could it be that, unlike the ABC, they can’t afford to bore their audience with a teachy-preachy zombie hypothesis?
Let’s vote for our laws of science then?
MediaWatch think science is done by counting papers and government paid scientists. After $100 billion in science funding it’s not hard to come up with 91 supportive scientists who haven’t been sacked yet.
So is McLean to be believed ahead of 91 leading experts and 6,000 peer reviewed scientific papers,…
On the other hand, there are 30,000 independent scientists, thousands of papers, millions of radiosondes and 4.5 billion years of history that show the IPCC is wrong. Skeptics include people with Nobel Prizes in physics, and men who walked on the moon. If Barry had done some investigating he would know that, and he could’ve phoned Ivar Giavar instead of giving the Union of Concerned Nobody’s time to discuss something that happened six years ago. Without any government funding, skeptics outrank and outnumber believers, but we don’t pretend that means something scientific because we know what science is.
Leaving no stone-age-trick unturned, MediaWatch are not just using ad homs, but inconsistent and cherry picked ad homs supported by strawmen and argument by authority. That’s what you get with Big Government funding. Stacked fallacies.
I’m delighted to be featured in the MediaWatch weekly propaganda minute. (at 4mins)
The IPCC demands for cash rest on freak data, empty fields, Fahrenheit temps recorded as Celsius, mistakes in longitude and latitude, brutal adjustments and even spelling errors. — says Jo Nova
Presumably, the MediaWatch team thought this quote looks bad for skeptics. Keep it coming, thinks Jo. Anyone watching with half a brain would notice that these mistakes sound detailed and not good, and that MediaWatch couldn’t find anyone to say that that these errors weren’t there. The meteorology experts got Fahrenheit mixed up with Celsius, can’t spell, and got the long-and-lat wrong? But this is OK because Steven Sherwood, UNSW, says we know about the problems already:
“turns up little if anything new, seems specifically motivated to discredit global warming…
Which only makes us wonder, if they knew — why didn’t they fix it? Don’t expect a government funded audit group to ask a government funded institute. Hadley gets £226 million a year to leave errors intact for 40 years but that’s OK according to MediaWatch. The real failing here is that some people question it. How dare they?
MediaWatch fooled by Hadley bait and switch
McLean found 70 problems, but according to Paul Barry, this is neutralized, because the dataset has 7 million datapoints. Nevermind that problems like site moves and quality control can apply to millions of points. One number is big and the other small and who cares about the units. That’s about as advanced as ABC investigation goes. Apples are oranges and the team with the most oranges gets $446 million to stop a problem that doesn’t exist or something like that…
Being functionally innumerate is practically a part of the ABC job description these days.
Would you like a character attack with that?
The MediaWatch strategy is and has long been essentially selective “Ad Hom” — they attack John McLean for something he said 7 years ago on a different topic. It’s the pagan Ad Hom Rule of Reasoning: if anyone gets any prediction wrong ever, then everything they say after that is automatically also wrong. By that reasoning the IPCC is toast. Climate models have failed for 24 years in a row on rain, humidity, clouds, Antarctica, the upper troposphere and global trends, but John McLean got one prediction wrong about the temperature of 2011, and therefore he can’t be trusted. Shall we talk about the time the Met Office predicted a BBQ summer and got torrential rain?
To sum up the MediaWatch analysis, two thousand Hadley employees rely on frozen tropical islands and junk data but we already knew about that apparently, which makes any problem OK. They junk-data-guys predict global doom and their predictions are right because McLean was wrong on a different topic 7 years ago and his audit was supervised by a man who was sacked and dedicated to one who said the IPCC was a farce? (Vale Bob Carter).
If only McLean had dedicated his audit to Kevin Rudd.
Beat up those Strawmen
To give it a wash of “sciencey” authority, they bring in some experts like Steven Sherwood to blandly declare McLean is wrong without showing any sign that Sherwood has even read the blog posts on it, let alone looked at McLean’s 135 page audit. After dismissing the findings as old news, he discusses something entirely different and waffles about the laws of physics.
“…its naive claims of alternative causes of global warming do not consider the relevant laws of physics and do not make sense.”
Which Law of Physics would that be? The Second Law of Data Collection? Conservation of Thermometer Units?
McLean’s audit was about the data, it was not about the flaws in their climate models. (That’s another story).
Associate Prof Nerilie Abram
“Regardless of whether the PhD thesis work has any merit, the claims that this falsifies IPCC findings is wrong.”
Abram doesn’t seem to realize that the IPCC findings rely on climate models which in turn are trained on the Hadley data. If Hadley exaggerates the warming, so will the models. But then it’s not like she’s a climate expert... oh wait.
MediaWatch could’ve asked Sherwood if we should trust the IPCC when the temperature trends consistently fall below even their lowest estimates. MediaWatch could’ve asked Sherwood if it’s OK to change the scale on temperature graphs to pretend the hot spot was found when it wasn’t. Can we trust him, or, to paraphrase his own words: is he “specifically motivated to believe global warming“?
Hadley Meteorology Office:
…the long term increase in global temperature is unequivocal. This is backed up by other globally recognised datasets all of which are run independently and find very similar warming.
They might be run independently, but they’re all dependent on BigGovernment. As I said yesterday:
They claim they are backed up by other datasets. but all the worlds temperature sets are juggling the same pool of measurements. If the shonky site-move adjustments start with national met bureaus, then get sent out around the world, all the global datasets combine the same mistakes and make similar overestimations.
Look who’s making a conspiracy theory…
News corp treats climate science and the threat to our planet with contempt, why is it so, presumably because Rupert Murdoch is a non-believer.
Naturally, the doubts of thousands of journalists are not because the IPCC keeps getting things wrong, or that climate change causes everything under the sun except “normal weather”, or that we’re perpetually tripping over tipping points, and it’s the last chance to save the world, again. Apparently, thousands of journalists and editors don’t obey the Met Bureau because they obey Rupert Murdoch instead. It’s all projection of the ABC’s failings. Maybe thousands of journalists just think for themselves.
See this weeks MediaWatch coverup for failing institutions

Well done Jo,
There’s no such thing as bad publicity – just some that is less noticeable!
In this case those that know JoNova will say GREAT, those that were awake enough and may think to question will come looking and the rest are still at the alter with Aunty Wa*ker!
Hey, why not see if Sky News isn’t interested in giving you 30 min a week?? you’d get plenty of support from those there already?! and it’s not hard to show that you could pull in good audience with +30% of Australians not cow towing to CAGWatology.
182
Three minutes a month would be good. More better.
Sorry about the accidental red thumb. Was trying to zoom in on small print.
20
Congratulations. You are now an enemy of the ABC. Like the rest of Australia.
The $30Million a week ABC/SBS needs to be closed or sold. Accurate impartial reporting and Ethnic broadcasting? Both
obsolete concepts.
We can get irresponsible unthinking prejudice without being forced to pay for it. The ABC will find the Climate is indeed changing.

You have enemies? Good. That means you’ve stood up for something, sometime in your life. Winston Churchill
Joanne Nova our Boudican Queen of science!

Media Watch is only doing what it’s supposed to do; it’s not a fact reporting or analysing program program whatsoever and it’s not designed for people who can think for themselves. Additionally, you can’t expect much from the few staff and long hours required to produce such an in-depth and extensive program (sarcasm). But no one really watches Media Watch anyway.
321
What else do you expect but a dedicated supporter of “ABC News Maths”?
150
Is that a reference to The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy ? Restaurant maths ?

bemused:
Actually I watched 2 minutes of it recently. It wasn’t live, I recorded a program and it was a little late starting, and my recorder doesn’t let me edit that bit away. Must buy a separate video editor.
My reaction was “What a precious w*anker” but now that I’ve heard it three times I deleted ‘precious’.
202
I haven’t watched it in ages, apart from catching the end of it once recently. That was enough to deter me from even accidently catching it again. That insufferable smug, smirking, self-righteous leftie rubbish I can well live without!
Well done Jo! I hope more sensible people have discovered your blog as a result of the efforts of Mediawatch!
212
I concur Annie.
I suffered through the Media Watch piece. This was the first time I have watched it in 5-10 years. Nothing has changed.
Sanctimonious SJW drivel.
Good onya JO! You are in their glorious ABC’s sights.
I hope you treat that with the honour it deserves. I too would love to be hated and vilified by their ABC. That could only mean that I am on the correct path!
131
According to the ABC climate scientist from just a few years ago I am now under more than 20 metres of water and had difficulty watching Media Watch, all I could see was bubbles…
331
Never mind the BBQ summer embarrassment, the Met Office predicted by no means a 3 month heat wave for this UK summer.
Then tried to tell us it was more or less the hottest UK summer evah!!!!!!!!!!!
330
I remember the satellite photo of the UK, it was totally white under snow with no land visible

The Roman poet Juvenal once asked Quis custodiet ipsos custodes? or Who will watch the watchmen?
Contextually it referred to the notion that male guards should not guard women against sexual assault as they themselves are capable of committing such crimes, the only solution would be to have the women guarded by eunuchs.
In the context of our times Auntie is guarded by government eunuchs and Justice is shared amongst the barbarian intellectuals.
321
As you’re probably aware, throughout history the many wives of kings and rulers were guarded by eunuchs. But this didn’t stop the girls from having sex with the eunuchs, it merely stopped the women from having children to them.
130
Excellent post, Joanne!
I’m 70 and I’ve forgotten what journalism is, with you, Joanne, being one of the rare exceptions. Keep hammering away at their weak points with truth and acerbity and cracks will eventually begin to manifest themselves. Perhaps then the whole CAGW edifice will collapse into a great rotting mound of the bovine excreta the whole charade consists of.

For a number of reasons, the Murdoch press is yet another section of the media I ignore and abhore. The foisting and boosting of Malcolm Turnbull is one reason, news.com.au is another, presenting adverts and promos as front page news yet another. (The main reason is the cunning downplaying of war and the giant deceptions behind current geopolitics, but I keep losing conservative friends when I raise these matters in a time now even the luvvie left is “guided by the beauty of our weapons”. So we won’t go there.)
While I’m staggered that Murdoch would take a place on the board of Genie Energy (no, I don’t have a facile solution to the Golan Heights, but know when to be staggered by bias and interest) I do admire Murdoch’s commercial sense and achievements. Rupert is a truly great industrialist. He has recognised that survival depends on offering the public alternatives to the monotonous fare of the rest of the media, has the sense to wrap his globalism in populism and deftly allows every potential punter to find a nag they like somewhere in his vast stable. And Rupert knows not to have sneering, haughty Old Dart characters delivering irony-laced opinions on media not their own. The ABC has Paul Barry, Rupert has the likes of Paul Murray and Tim Blair.
The one misfortune for prominent skeptics is that they have been forced into making a big affair out of “global warming”. There’s been no choice for them, and I admire their tenacity in uncovering the fibs and manipulations. These people are braver than I, that’s for sure.
However, it’s worth keeping in mind that “global warming”, whether it is happening now or not, is as unusual in the great scheme as night and day, low tide and high tide. Temps can only trend two ways, they have never been constant through the Earth’s existence. The tiny blips of cooling and warming of the last few thousand years are trivial, despite their effects on our affairs.
If human activity could be responsible for any present warming then that leaves far too much to explain about warmer conditions and higher sea levels of the very recent geological past. We are definitely not warmer than eight thousand years back, and it is to be doubted that we have reached the even more recent levels of warmth achieved in medieval, Roman etc times. And those last little coolings three and two hundred years back were real doozies – so watch out!
So am I saying that “global warming” does not matter and should not matter? Yes. That’s exactly what I’m saying. It’s utterly trivial…although the alternative may not be.
220
I lost faith on the ABC when they tried to do a hatchet job on the “The Great Global Warming Swindle”. That was the day I started questioning and doing my own research. Paul Barry? Doesnt he get paid an obscene amount of money for less than fifteen minutes work a week?
380
Paul Barry is better suited to reading to children about the boy who cried wolf
130
Since the purpose of reading to small children at night is to get them to sleep, you may well be right.

Do you thing MediaWatch will publish a “correction” to their opinion piece?
Corrections
Everybody makes mistakes, including Media Watch. Our editorial and production staff do their best to check and double check facts but mistakes still occur.
The insulated circularity of propagating “settled politics” becomes more obvious as it is absurd.
ABC’s “MediaWatch” is analogous to the physical impossibility and absence of wisdom seen when a proctologist attempts to undertake a sigmoidoscopy of their own rectum.
Who do they imagine they’re kidding?
201

They are in full damage control mode, obviously. If this was just nothing to see and outliers would they pulling out all stops to prevent their collective ship of fools from sinking?
210
Yep one thing I have noted over recent years is that the ABC likes recruiting reporters who have english accents (pommies).I think that there is a policy in the recruitment
department to do this deliberately at the ABC.I feel that they believe it gives their reporters more credibllity (more like fawning after their bigger cousin the BBC whom
the ABC was created in the image of).So the more plum the accent the more authority and this is especially so with our Mr Paul Barry .He likes to tell us that the only
“scientist” amongst the commenters on the issue of “shoddy” data at Hadcrut is our Jo Nova.So by his standards of investigative journalism no one else has any real
credibility. Thanks Paul!! I’ve been told now and I feel better and know my place(sarc). And like a true fair dinkum (oh sorry MR Barry forgive my lower class Australian
slang Sir) Investigative Journalist that he is -he doesn’t take the time to go and conduct an in depth interview with the author of the Phd thesis-John Mclean.Yeh this
kind of Media Watch junk is merely a masquerading pompous attempt to tell us what to think.Well no thanks Mr Barry -you can stick this rubbish journalism where the
sun doesn’t shine.
Cheers Mike Reed
210
Did you pick up the raw hypocrisy that Barry isn’t a climate scientist either giving him the same credibility as all those other non scientist he banged on about. Own goal Barry!
191
Firstly, no one cares what the empty left wing ABC evho chamber vomits up….
Secondly, as I suggested, that McLean woukd be attacked as he exposed the little man behind the curtain in front of Dorothy, the tin man and the cowardly lion…which is verbotten!

Oct 15: Deluge continues across south-east Queensland as drought-stricken farmers hope for more
“The sodden weekend across south-east Queensland has delivered some remarkable rainfall totals, with Noosa Heads on the state’s Sunshine Coast recording almost half a metre of rain.
The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) joked on Twitter that the seven-day rainfall totals for parts of the state’s south-east were “starting to resemble cricket scores”.

Did the BoM forecast ‘drought-breaking follow-up rain”?
Elders weather, issued 16 Oct 2018, Summary:
Over southern and eastern Australia the cold front events with potential to bring widespread rain are now expected about 21 October to 25 October, 4 November to 8 November, and 15 November to 19 November.
Rain events originating in the tropics and moving south are possible about 25 October to 29 October, 30 October to 3 November, and 16 November to 20 November.
Over Western Australia the strongest cold fronts should occur about 21 October to 25 October, 31 October to 4 November, and 15 November to 19 November.

My bamboo shots love it when the BoM predicts drought in October. I swear they start stirring as soon as the BoM says “drought”.
If rain gets any better this month they’ll have to call it a supercell. Or maybe a one in five hundred year event. Or maybe a one in two thousand year supercell freak event. Evah.
By the way, Port Macquarie for some reason has had a rain gauge much older even than Sydney’s. I notice that in 1848 there were nearly 1400 mm recorded just in January…the month after the driest December in the record in 1847. I found some old references to this midcoast flood hitting dry, unprimed ground, but not much. 1867’s flood was notorious, as were those in 1949, 1950 and 1963. But nowhere can I find something comparable to the rainfall of Jan 1848. Port Mac can catch rain others miss (900+ mm in May 1852), but 1400 mm in just a few weeks is like catastrophe x 3.
If this sort of rain were to come to this region again, would our climate authorities be quick to point out the previous event? Or would they be slow to do so? Or would they simply not mention it? (No need to answer, guys.)
181
I’m surprised the Hastings didn’t cop some massive rainfall and a flood in 1893. The whole east coast was awash. It was a very unsettled La Nina year. The rivers north and south of Port Macquarie were in flood to record levels; elsewhere it was the same story.
• the Hunter at Maitland had its biggest flood since white settlement;
• the Macleay at Kempsey had such a volume of water that it cut an entirely new course and entered the sea about 50km (or 80km, can’t remember which) from the old mouth;
• the Richmond River at Lismore flooded;
• Brisbane was flooded 3 times in Feb 1893 in the Great Flood/Black February Flood and the steel Indooroopilly Bridge was half washed away;
• Maryborough was under water;
• Gympie was under water;
• Rockhampton had its biggest ever flood.
Port must have been the only dry place on the east coast. There must have been a massive cyclone/series of rain depressions that tracked down the coast.
110
There were big falls right through the first half of the 1890s, Port, Laurieton and Kempsey. We suffered flooding in 1893, though more from rain elsewhere. It takes a lot of local rain to make the Macleay flood, but when there are also cyclones north or snow melt west…look out!
1893, the year of Brisbane’s triple, was indeed when the Macleay opened a channel at SW Rocks, which the government engineer decided to improve a few years later. 1929 was the year of heaviest February precip on the midcoast. At Kempsey, closer to my place, almost 900 mm fell, our wettest of any month in the record. For the 1963 autumn flood we copped 314.5 mm in one day locally.
1902 and 1915 seem to fight it out for driest year around here. The changes we had before we had climate change!
101
Hey Einsteins, lovely exchange of info about precip. No mention of temps anywhere, I notice. And I wonder as I read all these anti-climate change comments.. is there anybody here under the age of,say, 50?? And what percentage of commenters here would fall into that bracket I wonder.. The Baby Boomers who’ve profited from massive industrial development whilst simultaneously dumping any and all toxic by-products into the rivers, oceans, and land. Your ecologically myopic comments reflect your unfailing contempt for the state of the environment you’ve left in your salivating rush for the almighty dollar – with no margin of your profit allocated to environmental preservation or remediation. Enjoy your DDT and plastic-filled burial plots (or lead, mercury, uranium etc etc) as an intrinsically eternal earthy award for your lifetimes of achievement.

Never fear Jo, one thing the Ministry of Truth at the ABC cannot control is the weather and that will eventually be their downfall. Plus sites like yours and programs like Outsiders which are prompting more and more people to question the daily propaganda and false predictions the CAGW movement pushes out.
It wasn’t so long ago that people would never dare to publically question the faith. Now you even see members of the government like Craig Kelly on TV openly sceptical. Keep up the great work but it is going to be a long war, the friends of the ABC are many. But remember Mother Nature is on your side.
271
‘…it is going to be a long war …’
It has been a long war, but its coming to an end because of global cooling.
170
Unfortunately as Winston Churchill observed in the middle of the WWII war
“Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning.”
I feel that is the point at which the ‘climate change™’ issue is slowly arriving.
So gird-up your loins as I fear the alarmists will be going on to full media battle mode, and with calls for more censorship. So hold on to your IP addresses it might be a rough ride.
However if they are as dumb as they have been so far it should be like shooting fish in a barrel.

Manipulation, when carried to the extreme, is Ugly, but Smart People demonstrate their “Smartness” regardless and no doubt have viewing figures which justify their place in the ABCCC hierarchy.
The misuse of the ABCCC in propaganda propagation such this shows that even smart people can outsmart themselves.

There is no bad publicity. Great to see the ABC giving Jo Nova a serve and displaying telling text taken from the blog (did he have permission to display the text). The smarmy media watch reporter had gritted teeth when he declared Jo a “scientist”; that did not quite fit with his image of skeptics, typically uneducated and unwashed.
221
My finding is It’s the ‘skeptics’ who are more likely to be educated and the true believers just follow their leader without question
201
Unless you work for their ABC you are classed as uneducated and unwashed.
There are some reporters on Landline and Gardening Australia who their co-workers would consider uneducated and unwashed because they actually mix with the plebs but the vast majority of the ABC reporters operate in a cocooned environment of their own making. Their arrogance and egos greatly outweighs their ability to listen and learn from plebs.

Really, Albert, so your “finding” is based on what – the overwhelming ratio of climate scientists who warn of the effects we’re having on the planet vs the (comparitively) tiny amount who say otherwise. The beautiful irony here is the excess of the ignorance in your contribution is a standout – that those who have no scientific background whatsoever are so happy to support those who dispute the science.. who have no scientific background whatsoever. That is your “true believer” following their Pied Piper without question. Well done Albert.
11
We’ll, actually there has been work done, and the more science literate a person is, the more they are likely to be a sceptic, so Albert’s assertion it’s not without a scientific basis.
00
If you ever needed confirmation that you are on the right path, an attack from their ABC is it. Great write up Jo.
190
Watching was irritating, Barry banged on about how the people weren’t scientists ( except for 4 of them!) He bangs on about this even though he is commenting on the science and of course he “is not a climate scientist” Paul Barry – shut up about global warming , you aren’t a climate scientist and have no qualifications to comment against scientist who are, scientists like Jo Nova, McLean , and the great Bob Carter.
What a hypocrite
201
Bobl, we have so much for which to be thankful: thankfully we have people like you; thankfully you are so perfectly qualified to oppose the conclusions drawn by thousands of climate scientists from around the world; and most importantly that means that thankfully you’re no hypocrite.
11
You know Jaav, thank you for that, as an electrical engineering expert, I do have insight into this issue especially when it comes to the uselessness of wind and solar power to replace coal. Which of course is the domain of electrical engineers. I’m sure you’ll not dispute that seeing I’m far more qualified to comment about electrical engineering matters than you are. Nice to be recognized though, thanks again Jaav.
10
I feel your pain Jo. It is frustrating that no matter how much evidence you put in front of people, their wilful and ignorant choice to discount it is frustrating. I have one friend who believed everything Ford said about Kavanaugh despite me pointing out that her story changed several times, and her witnesses, including her best friend, had no recollection of it – and every witness who supported Ramirez’ story in the press spouted only hearsay or at best, questionable circumstantial evidence.
And similarly, she accepts AGW/MMCC despite there being no evidence that CO2 is the climate change driver alarmists claim it to be. You wonder how long you can keep bashing your head against the wall of ignorance.

Keep bashing your head against that wall, William – it’s obviously doing you a world of good.
[You’ve said nothing useful to the debate in this comment. I’ll leave this for Jo to see just in case she wants to approve it. She’s the boss, not me but in my judgment this isn’t worthwhile.] AZ
02
AZ, is good for us to have am actual debate with believers every now and again, it keeps our brains honed and ready. Not that Jaav is actually advancing any science or meaningful arguments yet, I await the meagre attempts to prove that somehow you can put 3.7 watts into a system and somehow magically get 15.6 watts out which IPCC science conveniently overlooks. Still Jaav may still yet surprise us all and explain why the law of conservation of energy is wrong.
20
Jo, how about a nice attack piece on Barry, bound to get you media time on next weeks media watch. Focus on Barry’s climate science credentials, his mistakes, his lack of numeracy, his obvious bias. Show how this blog has scientists across the board commenting and correcting while Barry’s missives don’t even allow comments. He is the worst media watch host ever, so show the world why.
282
🙂
Yes, I like that.
120
Thanks KK I think such a piece would be just what the doctor ordered for me.
00
Morning Jo,
Great post, and I agree Barry et al must be getting worried. Great.
One phrase hit me when I first saw it in the press comments on the IPCC report was “91 scientists…”. Isn’t the Summary for Policy Makers” written by the IPCC itself? And isn’t that august body made up of elected representatives of the countries? Who are not reqired to have any scientific qualifications at all?
If I remember correctly Donna Laframboise exposed that in her book “The Delinquent Teenager” some years back. Has anything changed?
If my memory is correct then Barry’s claim to even have 91 scientists on board is itself false.
Cheers,
Dave B
Cooyal
192
Yes, David, you are correct. The Summary for Policymakers is written by bureaucrats, who will not necessarily have any scientific training or, even, understanding.
They produce a document that has no scientific validity by cherry picking the information that the “scientists” have provided to provide a story that is designed to ensure that politicians with a similar lack of scientific understanding will use to design government policy to ensure that we all meet the nirvana that is waiting for us when man produces no more CO2.
The most recent SFP has managed to beat even the most ridiculous of the previous SFPs and is openly a non scientific political document that is anashamedly calling for world government and huge amounts of money from first world countries as we move towards that nirvana where we are all poor, cold and sick.
91
Thanks Peter,
I wonder when the word “scientists” got into the narrative? Was it only in the Australian media?
Cheers,
Dave B

A very good description The Cycle of Life Peter.
20
PeterPetrum, I’ve been writing down certain titles of qualification the wrong way all my life. So it’s “lawyers” and “accountants” and “doctors” and “scientists”. I’ve been leaving the quotation marks out since being taught about punctuation in my school years, obviously incorrectly. Thankyou!!
11
Jaav, I’ve given you free run, but don’t think you can turn up and drop ten comments a day with bland fallacies and generic snipes. Over to you…
22
Yes, I’m waiting on some arguments rather than just dissing people. C’Mon Jaav tell us why the scientists are right, tell us how renewables will be able to replace coal and nuclear for 24 x 7 x 365 electricity. Show us how the renewables can be expanded to transport, show us exactly how grid scale solar and wind energy saves CO2 and at what cost, but remember Jo has Engineers, and scientists “on staff” so you’d better be good!
30
The fact that quotation marks are used on scientist serves a purpose.
It highlights the need for the reader to remember that the “scientists” may be scientists in name only and may not have the normal skills expected of scientists.
It’s not something you learn in school, it’s a convention that indicates that the “scientists” may be dishing up rubbish science.
There’s a lot of that in the field of “Climate” where the same message can be indicated as Climate ™.

ABC’s media watch host Paul Barry is both ignorant and arrogant in the extreme. He heads a program that is clearly biased and refuses to properly address the scientific issues of climate change. How a nation of people such as Australia, that prides itself on openess and honesty tolerates such bigotry is beyond my understanding.

Well put Geoff.
71
As far as the ABC is concerned 6000 pages of research trumps dodgy temperature data .
101
The vast majority of that “research”, is into how climate change will effect stuff; Coral reefs, beer, middle east wars, sea levels, and smaller humans (to name but a few recent ones).
Therefor the majority of research is based on the assumption that the premise is correct. It’s all just a huge waste of time and money.
101
Wow, who’d a thunk it?
When Spring is in the air, the `Scandals’ fly thick and fast:
First: Australia had a leadership coup. (Yay! Go those piranhas! Get him!)
Currently: NZ may be about to have a `Leader of the Loyal Opposition’ coup.(Ouch. Taking the Nuclear Option…)
https://www.nzherald.co.nz/politics/news/headlines.cfm?c_id=280 Choose any one, choose ’em all, “Singing `all the burning Bridges’ … 🙂 ) …for any of you who may be even remotely interested … and I thought Aussie politix were nasty!
Still Currently: the UKMetOffice had it’s temperature database shredded by—gasp, shock, horror—a database audit which found lots of things wrong. Not just diddley squat out by half a degree wrongs but freezing temps…in the tropics …at sea level… for days, wrong, not to mention weather stations located `way over there’ when they weren’t, they were `way over here.,’ so I won’t.
Even Worse: the UKMO (the Defendant), the Beeb(We Have No Deniers Today … or ever, Council for the Defendant,) and all the sycophants (the Witnesses) had to drop everything, wave their hands (Feel the gale! Feel that wind! Quick, where are those windmills?) and switch to damage control—and out poured all those lines we all know so well: nothing to see here, move along now, we knew all about it years ago and it’s meaningless , doesn’t alter a thing (we know that, it never does).
Of course this won’t besmirch the IPCC’s integrity—there is no Integrity to Besmirch.
… and, I haven’t had any time to see what’s happening in Trump’s America yet, hope it’s still there, somewhere.
<<basso profundo>Oh, it's a wonderful world! </basso profundo>

Australia’s Climate Council says the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report is an urgent reminder that global warming poses a grave risk to humanity.
The report, released this week, called on countries to put an end to greenhouse gas pollution by 2050 to stop the world warming by 1.5 degrees.
According to the report if this is not implemented it would see the dramatic decline of the Great Barrier Reef and other environmental calamities…
…Climate Council CEO Amanda McKenzie told Sky News Australia the government should use the report as an opportunity to turn its back on coal and invest in renewable energy.

16 Oct: National Geographic: Bill Gates launches effort to help the world adapt to climate change
Many people are already facing the impacts of a changing climate and need help adjusting now, world leaders assert
By Laura Parker
Until recently, the consequences of climate change were thought to be so far into the future that many average people, including those who live in coastal zones, declared they needn’t bother; they’d be long dead by the time catastrophe struck.
No more. Climate change is here, costing billions of dollars every year to recover from destructive events…
To spur action, a coalition led by billionaire Bill Gates, former United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, and World Bank CEO Kristalina Georgieva on Tuesday launched the Global Commission on Adaptation to lessen the damage…
The commission has recruited 28 commissioners and political leaders from 17 nations, including Germany, Canada, Mexico, China, India, and Britain. (The United States is not part of the group.) Additionally, 25 leaders from around the world, including China’s environment minister, Germany’s economic development minister, and the mayors of Paris and Miami, also signed on to the group…
This year, on track to become the fourth hottest on record…BLAH BLAH
Even if efforts to reduce carbon emissions succeed and the goal of keeping global temperature rise below two degrees Celsius is achieved, changes already locked into planetary systems carry significant consequences that argue for the need for adaptation, Georgieva said. She added the world is capable of doing both tasks at the same time, like “walking and breathing.”
“We are the last generation that can change the course of climate change, that can mitigate climate change effectively and the first generation that has to live with the consequences,” she said. “It has to be mitigate and adapt at the same time.”

Murdoch’s UK top-selling Sun newspaper (June 2018 figs):
8 Oct: UK Sun: ON THIN ICE What is global warming, what causes it and what effect is it having on earth?
A new report suggests that to even have a 50-50 chance of staying under the temperature the world has to be carbon neutral by 2050
by Felix Allen
However, over the past century humans have aggravated the greenhouse effect by dramatically increasing the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
Human sources of CO2 come from activities such as deforestation and the burning of fossil fuels like coal, oil and natural gas.
Since the Industrial Revolution the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has rocketed by a third.
This rapid rise has had a direct impact on the Earth’s average temperature, with potentially catastrophic consequences…
The rise in the average global temperature has already had a demonstrable impact.
Greenhouse gases are believed to be higher now than in the last 650,000 years.
Melting glaciers, rising sea levels and dying cloud forests have all been directly linked to climate change.
Humans too are already suffering directly – with deadly heatwaves and catastrophic flooding becoming a regular occurrence…

PAUL BARRY: guess you and the Media Watch staff – all paid for by Australian taxpayers – didn’t bother to check Fox News either:
16 Oct: Fox News: Trump hedges on climate change denial in wake of Hurricane Michael; says ‘there is something there’
by Andrew O’Reilly; The Associated Press contributed to this report.
President Trump on Monday once again backed off his previous claim that climate change is a hoax, but would not say whether or not he believed it was a man-made problem.
Speaking at a Red Cross center in Georgia, where he was touring areas devastated by last week’s Hurricane Michael, Trump said “there is something there” in response to a question on climate change from a reporter.
“There is something there, man-made or not,” the president said, before deflecting to note that there have been previous storms that were much more intense and destructive than the recent slew of hurricanes to hit the Southeast…
Trump’s comments come a day after CBS aired an interview on “60 Minutes” with the president who said he doesn’t want to put the U.S. at a disadvantage in responding to climate change.
“I think something’s happening. Something’s changing and it’ll change back again,” he said. “I don’t think it’s a hoax. I think there’s probably a difference. But I don’t know that it’s man-made. I will say this: I don’t want to give trillions and trillions of dollars. I don’t want to lose millions and millions of jobs.”
“I’m not denying climate change,” he said in the interview. “But it could very well go back. You know, we’re talking about over a … millions of years.”…
As far as the climate “changing back,” temperature records kept by NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration show that the world hasn’t had a cooler-than-average year since 1976 or a cooler-than-normal month since the end of 1985.
Trump’s comments came just days after a Nobel Prize-winning Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change issued a warning that global warming would increase climate-related risks to health, livelihoods, food security, water supply, human security and economic growth. The report detailed how Earth’s weather, health and ecosystems would be in better shape if the world’s leaders could somehow limit future human-caused warming…

16 Oct: Fox News: from MURDOCH’S Sun UK: Black Death and other ancient diseases could be re-awakened by climate change, professor warns
By Simon Chandler, Digital Technology & Science reporter
Higher global temperatures would melt ice sheets that store long-buried bacteria, which could spread disease and potentially cause new global pandemics.
Professor Peter Frankopan offered his speculative prediction at the Cheltenham Literary Festival on Friday, as reported by The (MURDOCH) Times…
The professor of global history began by stating his view that there was “absolutely no chance” the international community would hit the Paris Agreement’s target of keeping global temperature rises under 1.5C.
He said, “If we go over that degree change, it’s not about the Maldives being harder to visit on holiday or migration of people — it’s about what happens when permafrost unfreezes and the release of biological agents that have been buried for millennia.”
And because ancient bacteria would be released again into the Earth’s ecosystems, there would be a big risk of the global population being hit by diseases it can’t handle.
Yesterday, an international team of climate scientists publishing in the Nature Plants journal wrote that severe climate change would cause worldwide beer shortages.
Last month, a paper published in the influential Nature journal concluded that global warming is already causing a rise in large landslides and tsunamis.
While in July, researchers at Stanford University published research which found that rising global temperatures could result in 40,000 more suicides in the US and Mexico by 2050.

8 Oct: Fox News: from MURDOCH’S New York Post: Terrifying climate change warning: 12 years until we’re doomed
By Lia Eustachewich
Earth is on track to face devastating consequences of climate change – extreme drought, food shortages and deadly flooding – unless there’s an “unprecedented” effort made to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, a new United Nations report warns.
The planet’s surface has already warmed by 1 degree Celsius – or 1.8 degrees Fahrenheit – and could see a catastrophic 1.5 C — 2.7 F — increase between 2030 and 2052, scientists say…
The stunning statistics were released Monday in a report by the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which warned that we must take “rapid, far-reaching and unprecedented changes in all aspects of society” in order to save our planet…
Countries in the southern hemisphere would see the most drastic effects…

I am seriously dismayed to see the planet’s health compromised by man-made factors.
More saddened by the fact that the sceptics will need life transplants, or probably grafts. They clearly need to get a life, urgently. No intergovernmental panel of experts needed to work that out.

It must be a very simple life, not being sceptical about anything. So you believe everything you read and hear?

Aside from acknowledging the Science that CO2 is not pollution, we on this site would be appalled at the real pollution which too many governments turn it blind eye to.
We are here because we care about the people in the unregulated places like China who are being subjected to the sort of dangerous pollution that was common in Europe and the West seventy years ago.

This MediaWatch article demonstrates a fundamental philosophical error that is common to climate alarmists. They implicitly assume that understanding of the natural world can come from the collective opinions of those who believe in the subject. “Facts” are what the collective experts assert, backed up by some sort of arguments and observations. “Misinformation” is what disagrees with this collective opinion.
In the case of the HADCRUT4 average temperature anomaly are the nuances. Rather than being a true average, it is an estimate based on data on often poor quality and highly inadequate coverage. To calculate an average data has to be adjusted and estimates made. It is clear from John Maclean’s work that their are errors in the data, and that insufficient checks made. It is also clear that the coverage is variable, with the 1850-1900 period have data coverage a tiny fraction of that in the post war period. Given temperature trends vary across the globe both in magnitude and (to a lesser extent) in timing, this will bias the results by an unknown degree. Assumptions have to be made about infilling the gaps and reconciling errors, that might be biased by the particular viewpoints of how the data ought to look.
The climate consensus takes any data issued by the experts as fact, rather than an estimate of an average. The philosophical blunder is to then declare any deviation from accepted facts or accepted conjectures, or accepted beliefs, as being not only false, but arising from willful ignorance, failures in thought processing or some other item. The climate alarmists, by their inward thinking end up unable to recognize when the natural world deviates from their collective beliefs about how it out to look. Increasingly, anyone who points out this deviation are vilified and driven out of the public sphere.
The philosophical point is that understanding of the natural world is always limited, especially on a complex subject like climate with inadequate data. When one approaches the subject from established beliefs the gaps are filled in with unjustified assumptions. Lack of knowledge and understanding is not even acknowledged, when alternative interpretations of the natural world become beyond the comprehension of the consensus.
40
IMO the HADCRUT4 data was deliberately manipulated to produce the ‘required’ results to push the AGW case.
Good points though.
20
theRealUniverse, I thought it was climate change proponents who based their assertions on a conspiracy theory, and the skeptics who base theirs on evidence.
