Scientist seals himself in plastic tent for 3 days for “climate change” — aborts in 15 hours, foiled by clouds

A 28 year old guy in British Columbia thought it had some message about climate change if he sealed himself in a primitive biodome with 200 plants. But the sun didn’t shine, the plants didn’t photosynthesize enough, and he “felt sluggish”. CO2 levels were a bit high so he had to abandon the experiment just 15 hours later — calling it “a huge success”. As you would, if you had no connection to actual hardship, or actual success.

The BBC thought this badly planned, unscientific stunt failure was newsworthy and lauded him his 15 seconds of fame and advertising for the cause. Proving that any kind of measurable achievement is irrelevant. If it promotes the religion, anything will do.

I challenge anyone to find a lamer stunt in the history of climate panic

Kurtis in a jar. Biodome Man.

Kurtis Baute: Scientist leaves airtight dome after 15 hours

A self-styled “whimsical scientist” who locked himself in an airtight dome with 200 plants to raise awareness of climate change has ended his experiment.

He thanked fans and described the experience as a “huge success”.

While still inside the dome, he explained his mission in a Twitter thread, writing: “#ClimateChange is real, we’re causing it, and it’s a real big deal.

Hmm. He doesn’t say what his “abort” value was in ppm.

“The messed up thing about my experiment is that some of my abort values (eg If CO2 is too high I escape) are just everyday experiences for many people on this planet. Everyone deserves clean air, but not everyone has it.”

So he pushed his body to withstand levels of CO2 that other people experience every day. Indeed “many” people. Give the man a medal.

It is hard to find a bar set lower than that. It might mean more if he had half a lung, or was really an axolotl.

Scientist sealed in airtight biodome aborts experiment early due to CO2 levels

Despite his three-day attempt falling short, Kurtis Baute says the message about climate change remains the same.

Yes, the message about climate change is that the scientists who are drawn to it are publicity hounds who are not good with numbers.

Plus the whole lack of a cause and effect thingy, or any reason for being, reminds us of the IPCC. “Congrats”.

Canadian Kurtis Baute, 28, was living with around 200 plants inside the greenhouse to clean his air and provide oxygen – but a cloudy day in British Columbia limited photosynthesis, allowing CO2 levels in the chamber to rise.

There is some poetry in him being foiled by clouds. It’s the only part of this experiment similar to climate models.

“It did end sooner than I expected, but that’s okay,” Kurtis told the Press Association.

“Environments are complicated things, and it’s easy to be too optimistic about your predictions.”

No kidding.

Then just when you think the hype has peaked….

“Personally, this has totally changed my relationship with the air that we inhabit.

“I literally used to see right through it, this fluid that we are immersed in 24 hours a day, but now I see that it is a literal life-force, allowing us to get energy out of our food.

      Both statements are correct.
      Air contains oxygen and CO2.
Plants use the CO2 (and sunlight) to grow “food”
Animals use the oxygen to convert plant food to energy.

Just goes to prove that CO2 does not provide the environment for a greenhouse – a greenhouse provides the environment for CO2.

What about the workers in greenhouses that have artificially high levels of CO2 to increase crop yield? They work in levels of CO2 that would make his head spin.

Another question that isn’t answered, what were the 200 plants and what size were they? I assume they were small plants in pots in which case he should have researched his experiment more thoroughly – but then this was only ever going to be publicity.

Probably a little less than this. If we have CO2 at 9%, then O2 levels would be 12%, which would be fatal fairly quickly. The number I’ve seen somewhere is about 8000 ppm or 0.8%, but that’s probably an operating setpoint, not a maximum…

The controlling factor is the oxygen pressure on the lungs. Submarines work at higher pressures than sea level International Standard Atmosphere (ISA) of 1013.25 Mb. Carbon Dioxide levels can be maintained at these pressures at a much higher level than ISA. Air pressures can be raised to a safe level of 8,000 ppm CO2 almost indefinitely. Just Thinkin’ #6.2 is undoubtedly correct on the maximum level of CO2 of 9,000 ppm. Any air pressures above this, and N2 (Nitrogen) can be adsorbed into the blood stream – with potential disastrous results – ‘The Bends’.

Is it CO2 or lack of exercise? You cannot run in place because the sound is ryhtmatic and can be picked up by sonar. You cannot lift weights because a drop would cause the same problem. One is left with squats, pushups, sit-ups and etc. I only spent 10 years and my arteries are 10 years older than I am. I have run marathons, ridden several RAGBRAI and ridden 2000+ miles for 15 years. CO2 or sedate life style?

A series of pinhole cameras have been positioned around Lake Tahoe to record in a single exposure the effects of climate change over the course of the next 1000 years. From The Engineering Toolbox https://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/co2-comfort-level-d_1024.html

Carbon Dioxide Concentration – Comfort Levels.

      Normal CO2 Levels
The effects of CO2 on adults at good health can be summarized to:

      normal outdoor level: 350 – 450 ppm
      acceptable levels: < 600 ppm
complaints of stiffness and odors: 600 – 1000 ppm
ASHRAE and OSHA standards: 1000 ppm
      general drowsiness: 1000 – 2500 ppm
adverse health effects may be expected: 2500 – 5000 ppm
maximum allowed concentration within a 8 hour working period: 5000 – 10000 ppm
maximum allowed concentration within a 15 minute working period: 30000 ppm

The levels above are quite normal and maximum levels may occasionally happen from time to time. In general – ventilation rates should keep carbon dioxide concentrations below 1000 ppm to create indoor air quality conditions acceptable to most individuals.

The standard in Australia Was 5000ppm back in the late 90’s. Working at a winery on a still night during peak fermentation the whole place would be greater than 5000ppm. The oxygen concentration would be around 20% so it seems that the CO2 was displacing nitrogen first. We just kept on working and ticking the boxes that said yes on the odd time that we filled out a confined space entry form.

The maximum allowed 15 minute exposure is 30,000 ppm.

Given the approximate exhalation concentration of 40,000 ppm there still remains a small margin of use but I imagine that the breathing rate may be a bit faster.

Under normal conditions we breathe in 400 and breathe out 40,000 which gives an exchange rate of 1 to 100.

I wonder if our bodies can produce CO under some circumstances.

Lubos Motl, the Czech theoretical physicist has a blog; “The Reference Frame” which I followed for some years but haven’t over the last few years due to other items requiring my attention.

        Way back in May 2011 Lubos Motl put this CO2 data quoted below on the concentrations of CO2 in various situations up on his blog;

        ——————-
From Lubos Motl’s “The Reference Frame” blog

        Your House may be uninhabitable

It may be useful to summarize some important values of the CO2 concentration:

150 ppm – the minimum concentration below which many plants may face problems to run photosynthesis and stop growing

180 ppm – the concentration during ice ages

280 ppm – the concentration during interglacials, i.e. also the pre-industrial concentration around 1750

        391 ppm – the concentration today. [ 2011 ]

500 ppm – the concentration around 2060-2070 (unlikely that before 2050 as they claim)

560 ppm – the concentration around 2080-2110 (the “doubled CO2” relatively to the pre-industrial values) relevant for the calculations of climate sensitivity); a concentration routinely found outdoors today

700 ppm – the concentration in an average living room

900 ppm – concentration in an average kitchen

1,270 ppm – the concentration used to double the growth of Cowpea in a famous video

1,700 ppm – the average concentration in the Cretaceous 145-65 million years ago (early mammals came, plus figs, magnolias, birds, modern sharks)

4,500 ppm – the concentration 444-416 million years ago (the Silurian dominated by corals and mosses); see other values in geological epochs

10,000 ppm – sensitive people start to feel weaker

40,000 ppm – the concentration of CO2 in the air we breath out

50,000 ppm – toxic levels at which the animals like us get weaker in hours; the value is 5 percent of the volume

180,000 ppm – the concentration of CO2 in exhausts of a healthy motor; that’s 18 percent

1,000,000 ppm – pure CO2, just to make you sure what the units are

        —————-
The so named Climate Sensitivity, the temperature rise to be expected from a doubling of the so called pre-industrial levels of CO2 reputedly at around 280 ppm but claimed by the researchers of the 19th century who did good science on this , those pre-industrial CO2 levels were closer to an average 320 ppm.

After 30 years and a few billions of dollars spent on modelling and papers written, the climate scientific mob still haven’t derived an acceptable to all climate sensitivity number .
The “consensus” now being around the Climate Sensitivity number for a doubling of CO2 levels is now much closer to 1.5 degrees increase if that, with some “experts” estimating climate sensitivity down to close to one degree increase in average global temperatures witha doubling of pre-indiustrial CO2 levels rather than the original IPCC 1980’s /1990’s claims of 2.5 to 4 degrees increase from a doubling of CO2 from pre-industrial levels of 280ppm.

As the increase in temperature with the increase in CO2 is a logarithmic formula, most of supposed warming takes place with the initial increase in temperature with the final percentages of CO2 increases providing almost no warming at all.

As most of the warming, if it has occurred and IF it was due to increased CO2 , has already happened and as we are now well on the way to the 520 ppm which is the theoretical doubling of the the 280ppm of the pre-industrial CO2 levels, not much can be expected in the future re increases in average global temperatures from the further increases in global CO2 levels.

Thats of course if any of this highly theoretical and so far completely unproven scientifically , warming due to increases in CO2 has actually occurred.
        .
Some further information on this can be found here; Plant fossils of West Virginia [ coal country ] which show historic carbon dioxide levels, independent of Greenland Ice core data which is the main and most qquoted source of past paleo CO2 levels, that were ascertained by the sizes of the fossilised leaves “Stomata” , the plant’s breathing holes on the underside of the leaf which change in size and number according to localised CO2 levels.

In a sub-section at this site, the “Basis for the Estimate of Pre-Industrial CO2” goes on to show both the measured levels of atmospheric CO2 during the 19th century and an explanation of how Guy Callender, the so called father of global warming, selected low values [ circled ] of the measured atmospheric CO2 to begin his calculations on both the increases to be expected in CO2 and the temperature rise that would supposedly result from the expected increase in CO2 levels.

Unfortunately for clarity purposes the relevant graph in this sub section is quite small but it is the graph which is often used to butress questioning on the widely accepted initial global warming low 280 ppm CO2 numbers but like all things so characteristic of the Climate Change belief and ideology, with no proof that the number quoted for pre-industrial CO2 is actually correct.

Starting with a low number for CO2 concentrations of course make any increase and therefore any associated warming look much more severe and supposedly far more dangerous than beginning with a high pre-industrial CO2 level
An initial low CO2 number would make any increase in CO2 and its supposed associated temperature increase look much more dangerous particularly when ably assisted by a suitable level of klaxon like climate alarmism.

May be this is one of the reasons for slowing wind speeds!

Too many wind turbines are destroying not only the grid supply systems plus the environment with their clearing of forests in Germany plus human health problems from infrasound which has now been connected to heart problems as well.

Plus the almost total decimation of the Bat populations around wind farms. And thats from a wind farm worker.

Bats being mamals have a rigid rib cage structure which the pulsations from the blades of the turbines collapse when the bats are metres away from the blades.

Think a large helicopter winding up its rotor to flying revolutions and 2 or 30 metres away you can feel the hard pulse of air every time a blade passes your position and then relate that to the delicate bone structure rib cages of Bats.

And now wind turbines are being accused of slowing wind speeds across Germany and some of Europe plus causing a measured warming of temperatures as the turbines mix warmer a air from above low level nightime inversions with the low level near ground, under the inversion cold air thus raising temperatures in the meteorological temperature measuring sensors.
And so we have some more quite spurious but measured warming due to wind turbines.

Less and less wind due to more and more wind turbines?

Experts are finding out wind turbines are not only an inefficient way to produce electricity, but that they are also wrecking the environment, natural habitats and even the climate.

So when you switch on those lights and heater and A/C all powered by renewable energy particularly when it gets dark and the solar cells have long stopped working, think of those rural people who with no input, no acknowledgement by the city governments , no say if a wind farm is going to be built within a couple of kilometres of their dwelling which they may have lived in for decades, they are are then subjected to not only infrasound that causes the Cilia in their ear canals to vibrate in sympathy with the pulses of infrasound leading to a permanent low intensity health destroying motion sickness but are now being subjected to the same unwanted , unneeded turbine infrasound impacting on the health of theirs and their family’s hearts.

And nobody gives a damn about these ordinary powerless country people leadst of asll the green politicians and green and bureacratic and political city elites.
The wind turbine companies make even the totally corrupt Bank executives and AMP executives look almost respectable compared to the denials and outright lies about infrasound and low costs and reliability and etc the turbine companies and their executives and directors continue to promulgate whilst they collect their tens of millions in tax payer funded subsidies.

Then something changed (and my will they be surprised!). https://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lat=71.28528&lon=-156.76583 Utqiagvik is now 4-below with a -13˚C wind chill and freezing fog and snow; Denali’s summit is -43˚C and snowing while the North Pole is -18˚C. Admittedly Greenland’s catastrophically warmed from -42˚C this morning to -25˚C now, then again, it’s been snowing in Scotland and Germany and as far south as Morocco in North Africa. NZ’s in for a chilly, snowy start to the week and South Africa may even be in for a little Halloween dusting as well in the next few days.

Yet another “climate scientist” from the University of Guelph in Ontario, an MSc graduate student in the school of environmental sciences. “To do a directed studies, you will contact a faculty member in advance to create an individual project of interest as these will require instructor approval”. So I guess he gets a A+.
I wonder does he realise that it was his breathing that caused the problem?

Boy all those submariners must be brave.
Just imagine spending weeks at a time with co2 levels at many thousands of ppm. OH and ditto for the greenhouse workers who spend there working day breathing in 5,000 to 8,000ppm of co2 plant fertiliser.
Gosh surely they too should be awarded the VC or Military medal or something, SARC.

      Try googling him…

      According to U-of-Guelph via google:

      Kurtis Baute
      MSc Graduate Student

Page date: sometime in 2018 (I didn’t look any further. I redacted his email address which Google didn’t do …) 🙂

He sealed his `tent.’ Oh dear. He didn’t count on respiration and perspiration before entering the tent. We breathe out water vapour in surprising quantities, at a rate which rises with temperature. And then our skins get involved. No wonder he bailed at 15 hours: it must have been quite a fug!

Us humans can be smelly critters in close sweaty quarters! Ha ha ha. And no ventilation in the tent: it must have been about to rain inside when he bailed out. The plants wouldn’t have minded such semi-tropical topical conditions (very conducive to fungus too—did he have any mushrooms?) at all. All they needed would be some sunlight 🙂

Well, he did have some success: he successfully demonstrated a centrally heated greenhouse! 🙂
And some of the effects of no ventilation 🙂

Submarines like to surface as often as possible and blow fresh air from stem to stern.

      yes, it’s called digestion …
but the atmosphere has nothing to do with that …
it’s just something our bodies do ,,,
      especially after we’ve eaten …
and then things can become … ummm… scented, aromatic even, or positively odourous, even malodourous when there’s no ventilation …
… it remains to be seen just how much he’s been educated by the experiment. I don’t hold out much hope, personally.

Just remember the message these delusional fools are trying to sell us.
At the start of the Ind REV co2 levels were about 280 ppm and now they are about 406ppm.
That’s an increase of about 1.26 part of co2 in every 10,000 parts of the air we breathe. Yet according to the experts??? this amazing stuff seems to work like pixie dust and cause MUCH higher rainfall across OZ, but less rainfall ( last 30 years) in SW WA, yet higher rainfall in WA overall. Amazing stuff indeed.
OH and less rainfall in Vic over the last 20+ years and Tassie as well. Incredible stuff.
But higher and more even rainfall overall in southern OZ and south OZ.
Northern OZ rainfall is much higher, plus Qld and much higher in the NT.
NSW rainfall is much higher as is the MDB and we had a prolonged positive and neutral IOD from 1992 to 2009 and as a result we had a long mill drought.
But in 2016 we had flooding of the MDB caused by a strong negative IOD with little help from neutral ENSO off our east coast. IOW neither el nino or La nina.
Here’s the latest CSIRO co2 levels from Cape Grim Tassie. About 406ppm and slightly higher in the NH. And if you believe the pixie dust qualities of this 1.26 part of co2 for every 10,000 parts we inhale then I think you’ll believe anything. And they do. BTW you can move the toggle back through the years at the Cape Grim site to read prior levels of co2.

Prince bathes himself in Liberal Partiers’ admiration until the visit is almost over, then…

27 Oct: Town & Country Mag: Prince Harry Just Paid Tribute to Prince Charles and His Work in the Fight Against Climate Change
“My father and others were unrelenting in their commitment to preserve the most valuable resource we have, our planet.”
    By Caroline Hallemann
“My father and others have been speaking about the environment for decades—not basing it on fallacy or new-age hypothesis, but rooted in science and facts, and the sobering awareness of our environmental vulnerability,” Harry said, before taking up the mantle himself.
“We must appreciate our planet and what it has to offer. The world we live in cannot be replicated or tamed,” he said. “It is a wild place where beauty takes time to form, in most cases, thousands of years, and without it, we are nothing.”

Watch a clip of his speech here, then read the full transcript below…

I know that here in Australia you have particular challenges such as coral bleaching on your magnificent Great Barrier Reef, recurring drought, and ever increasing bush fires. It is absolutely heartbreaking to see your natural treasures being changed forever…

Young people now innately understand far better than previous generations that we simply cannot continue to destroy our natural world, without facing major, irreversible consequences.
And they understand that many of the solutions we need to tackle these issues can be found by working together and empowering communities to come up with long-lasting, sustainable solutions…

We cannot continue to pollute the oceans with plastics and other wastes. We cannot continue to breathe polluted air while cutting down our forests, or without reducing emissions. We cannot stand by and let our wildlife disappear from the earth and our fish from the seas.
In closing, I think we can agree tonight that there cannot be any more excuses. Thanks to the tireless efforts of everyone in this room, and the environmentalists and conservationists of the past, we are ready to translate our awareness into action.

It is going to take every single one of us to stop the clock on the destruction of our planet, and time is not on our side…

Well, I think our scientist in the plastic tent with the pot plants has given us some insight. If you don’t notice how cloud makes vain every facile assumption and statistic about climate, then you will think your pot plants in a BC autumn are simple mechanisms with an on/off switch labelled CO2.

Kurtis Baute, self labelled ‘whimsical scientist’.

    Education
    University of Guelph
Master of Science (M.Sc.), Environmental Science
    2013 – 2015
Researched the use of tall grass species as feedstocks for producing biogas renewable energy.

Now that ecology is a major employer, thanks to Climate Change rivers of cash, you have to wonder about the quality of the education which allows people like Tim Flannery to claim he is a scientist with an undergraduate degree in English, like Al Gore. He gives his opinion on subjects like nuclear power, as if he was a technological expert, not a science fiction writer.

How much post school hard tertiary science is in these prolific ‘environmental’ degrees is unknown and likely zero in Flannery’s case but they all call themselves ‘scientists’. It gives real scientists a bad name. The other bad name for real scientists is skeptics.

Actually, in the hard sciences the MSc is hard. Flannery managed to get through an MSc and PhD with only an English degree, so environmental science clearly requires no real science.

We are talking here of the new ‘environmental’ sciences where emotion is the greatest guide to truth, not facts. It is a nebulous thing dedicated to making sure nothing changes. You would in fact think an increase in CO2 would be great for photosynthesis, food production. In real hothouses they increase CO2 deliberately.

The three factors for photosynthesis are sunshine, CO2 and H2O. CO2 is essential, not poisonous or evil and a world experiment over the last 30 years has shown it does not change temperature, so how on earth does it change climate?

Then, this is ‘environmental’ science where Professor Turkey and his Ship of Fools cost this country many millions and risked so many lives because he believed sea ice was melting even when presented with photographs showing it was not.

Back to the real world: Record wholesale energy prices predicted for 2019
“Futures prices, which indicate what traders and power companies are betting prices will average next year, show Victoria and South Australia are now expected to have average annual power prices near or above $100 a megawatt hour in 2019, equalling the Victorian record”. “As Scott Morrison threatens to take a big stick to energy retailers, electricity futures are pointing to record-equalling wholesale prices in Victoria and NSW for next year because of gas prices, drought, renewable power connection issues and forecasts of a hot, dry summer”.
“There has been recent industry agreement that the growing amount of wind and solar that has come into the market thanks to the renewable energy target will drive high wholesale power prices down”. Industry agreement from all the rent seekers? More wind and solar mean lower utilisation of dispatchable power, but when the sun isn’t shining and the wind isn’t blowing, those reliable generators must be ready to deliver. So the investment in intermittents is a waste that will continue to drive up wholesale costs and network costs.

    news!

27 Oct: The Saturday Paper: Climate change claims its first mammal extinction
Liberal moderates, corporations and the voters of Wentworth have all called on the Morrison government to act on climate change. But the country’s top scientists say its effects are already wreaking havoc across Australia.
    By Mike Seccombe.
The Bramble Cay melomys was not, frankly, a particularly prepossessing creature, as one might gather from the little native rodent’s other name, the mosaic-tailed rat…
Only by the manner of its extinction is the melomys distinguished: science believes it to be the first mammal species whose demise can be attributed directly to climate change.
The melomys was previously the only mammal endemic to the Great Barrier Reef…

The last of the melomys are thought to have died somewhere between 2007 and 2009, although it was not until 2014 that the Queensland government released a report conceding that despite a determined effort by scientists, using traps, cameras and old-fashioned foot searches, there were none left.
That report confirmed sea level rise, coupled with increasingly frequent and intense storms and higher storm surges, as the probable cause. The species was washed away while no one was looking…

The way things are going, says Stephen Williams, professor of ecology and climate change at James Cook University, about half the endemic vertebrate species of the wet tropics could be extinct by the end of this century. Most of the rest would be expected to be critically endangered…

(Professor Kingsley Faulkner, an eminent surgeon and chair of Doctors for the Environment) echoes the views of former Liberal leader John Hewson, who campaigned against his old party in Wentworth.
“No party should be elected without a credible climate policy,” Faulkner says…

This is the same recycled extinct rat story that did the rounds a year or two back and was treated with appropriate derision then. Bramble Cay is/was a virtual large sandbank off the coast of Papua New Guinea near the mouth of the Fly River in the SW from whence the rat probably floated out on driftwood during a flood. As for being part of the GBR, Bramble Cay is as much a part of the GBR as Tasmania is a part of NSW. The same scientists that declared it extinct due to global warming admitted that they hadn’t bothered looking to see if it still existed on the PNG mainland. Yawn, move on.

    all over MSM in UK.

26 Oct: BBC: Roger Harrabin: Rising seas will swamp homes, report says
An increase of at least 1m is almost certain at some point in the future, the government’s advisors predict.
The Committee on Climate Change (CCC) warns this huge rise ***may happen over the next 80 years – within the lifetimes of today’s children.
The number of homes threatened by coastal erosion could rise from 5,000 to 32,000 by 2050 and 82,000 by the end of the century…

26 Oct: UK Times: Ben Webster: Saving homes from rising seas ‘will be too expensive’
Climate change will “almost certainly” cause sea levels to rise by at least a metre. This could happen by 2100, which is “within the lifetimes of today’s children”, the body said in a report on risks to the English coast…

MSM doesn’t link to report. CB links to page that links to page that has a download:

26 Oct: CarbonBrief: CCC: England’s coastal defences need ‘urgent’ rethink to cope with climate change
    by Jocelyn Timperley
New policies are “urgently” needed to protect homes and landscapes from coastal flooding and erosion in the long term, the Committee on Climate Change (LINK) (CCC) says…

There is also a possibility of accelerated ice sheet melt – and, thus, higher sea level rise than 1m – in the absence of more mitigation on climate change, Professor Jim Hall, who leads on flooding and coastal erosion at the CCC, tells Carbon Brief…

By the 2080s,1.5m properties – including 1.2m homes – may be at risk of coastal flooding, it says, with a further 100,000 at risk from coastal erosion. Around 1,600km of road, 92 railways stations and 12 substations and nuclear power stations could be at risk from coastal erosion or flooding by 2100, the CCC adds…

24 Oct: Deutsche Welle: Thousands protest German coal phaseout
    kw/jm/rt (Reuters, dpa)
Some ***20,000 miners marched through Bergheim demanding protection for their jobs as the coal commission met to draw up a plan to phase out coal-fired power generation. Environmentalists were also there to make a point.
Under banners: “Without good work, no good climate! We are speaking out for our jobs,” as many as 20,000 mine workers took part in demonstrations organized by the IG BCE and Verdi trade unions on Wednesday in Bergheim near Cologne, Germany…

“The actions of forest conservationists are given maximum understanding,” (IG BCE President Michael) Vassiliadis told the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. “But employees’ concerns are often ignored.”
“In Germany there are about 100,000 jobs dependent on coal-fired power generation,” Vassiliadis said…

Even workers from the eastern and central German coal regions traveled to Bergheim to join the protest.
“We are here to support our colleagues and hope for some more years of brown coal,” said Diana Mühlberg, who works for the brown coal company LEAG…
(REMAINDER GIVEN OVER TO ANTI-COAL MOB; CHIMNEYS “SMOKE” FOREST PROTESTER BEING ASSAULTED BY POLICE)
Environmental groups including 350.org, the Munich Environmental Institute and Naturfreunde Deutschland have announced a mass demonstration on Saturday close to Hambach forest.

The Local halves the number of protesters; says “they carried banners during the protest”; links it with giraffe story!

24 Oct: TheLocalGermany: Germany at a glance: Major protests against coal power phase out and giraffe who hates grass
At least ***10,000 miners demonstrated in Bergheim near Cologne on Wednesday. They carried banners during the protest, which was planned as a meeting of the German Kohlekommission (coal commission) took place…

    Handelsblatt says 30,000 protested:

25 Oct: Handelsblatt: Coal commission calls for surge in investment to offset coal phaseout
The commission tasked with finding ways to quit coal-fired power in Germany listed suggestions for helping affected regions, which include massive investments and a warning that federal aid pledged is not enough.
    By Klaus Stratmann
Germany’s coal commission, a panel of politicians and energy experts set up by the government to help organize the phaseout of coal-fired power generation, recommended massive investment in the regions that will be hit. They warn that failure to do so could cause social upheaval, especially in the former communist east.

The report, seen by Handelsblatt, provides a detailed list of possible infrastructure and renewable energy projects to offset the blow of quitting coal in eastern mining regions and the western Ruhr valley.

Furthermore, the €1.5 billion ($1.7 billion) that the government set aside for structural development in the current four-year parliamentary term could only be “a first step.” That money should rather be made available to the affected regions immediately, according to the report.

    Worries about the former East
Just last week, the eastern states alone — Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Brandenburg — demanded €60 billion in federal aid to cover the phaseout of lignite mining.
Although Germany’s mining sector is relatively small and employs just 21,000 people — 11,000 in the east — the phaseout is a hot-button issue. There are fears that job losses could boost support for the far right in affected regions, especially in the east where coal is the main industry in some parts.

The Alternative for Germany party, the leading opposition party, has garnered support in those regions by questioning whether humans are accelerating global warming…
The commission, which is also drafting a timetable for exiting coal, said structural funds shouldn’t just go towards economic projects but also into measures “to develop civil society activities, quality of life and soft location factors.”
It said a successful structural policy could help safeguard the liberal democratic order in the east, which saw the worst neo-Nazi rioting in a generation in the town of Chemnitz in August…

More than ***30,000 miners, coal power station employees and industrial workers protested against the phaseout and job security in Bergheim, near Cologne in western Germany, where the commission met for discussions Wednesday. And power station operators Uniper and Steag warned against rapid cutbacks in coal, saying it would make Germany vulnerable to power outages…

26 Oct: Foreign Policy Mag: How Women Could Win It for Bolsonaro
Brazil’s far-right presidential front-runner made hateful comments a hallmark of his political life. That hasn’t held him back.
    by Ciara Long
That women may be a deciding factor in Bolsonaro’s victory, rather than cement his defeat, might seem to run counter to his public image. As recently as last month, as many as 50 percent of women said they would not vote for Bolsonaro under any circumstance…

Despite Bolsonaro’s litany of sexist, racist, homophobic, and autocratic comments, Brazilian women are as likely to support him as their male counterparts. That’s because many of them are tired of seeing near-nightly news stories of political corruption scandals and gargantuan bribes juxtaposed with public services struggling to cope on squeezed budgets and rising violent crime; they want a radically different president than they’ve seen before…

26 Oct: Foreign Policy Mag: It’s Not Just the Right That’s Voting for Bolsonaro. It’s Everyone.
Brazil’s populist firebrand is relying on conservative values, fear of crime, anger about corruption, and rampant fake news to gain support from across the political spectrum.
    by Matias Spektor
In the second round of voting on Sunday, he is poised to win the presidency…
More shocking still is that he will not win it on the back of a minority of radical crazies but on a wave of support from the majority of the electorate…

Millions of voters who would have normally cast their ballots in favor of centrist candidates are planning to vote for him this time around…
Bolsonaro has proved to be a cunning campaigner who knows how to occupy the empty space that opened up as the old Brazilian order imploded. Like Donald Trump in the United States, he is not the cause of popular anger but its symptom…

26 Oct: American Spectator: Media Struck Dumb by Early Voting
    by David Catron
Why such sparse coverage of the early GOP lead?
The Democrats typically lead Republicans in early voting during midterm and presidential election cycles. In 2016 the Democratic lead in early voting was such that it inspired major news outlets, AP for example, to run articles with titles like “Early voting: More good signs for Clinton in key states.” Among the states in which early voting portended a victory for Hillary, according to AP, were Florida and North Carolina. The story went on to quote her spokesperson as follows: “The Clinton campaign describes both North Carolina and Florida as ‘checkmate’ states.” Trump won both of course.

Oddly, most of the major media have been reluctant to report early voting trends in the current cycle. AP has reported on it only when there are vague complaints about alleged voting machine problems. The Washington Post, which was just as anxious as AP to run stories about early voting in 2016, now tells its readers that these ballots have no significance: “Who’s voting early? Mostly people who would have voted anyway.” What has caused such a reversal in media attitudes? To paraphrase Dana Carvey’s SNL character, Enid Strict: Could it be the surge in early voting by Republicans?

And, make no mistake, there is a GOP surge that has rendered this year’s early voting pattern unique. Interestingly, the only major network that has covered this story in detail is by no means remarkable for its Republican-friendly reporting.

On Monday NBC reported, “The data suggests enthusiasm among early GOP voters that could put a dent in Democratic hopes for a ‘blue wave’ in the midterms.” Early GOP voters were leading Democrats by large margins in Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Montana, Tennessee, and Texas. And that was not an anomaly.

    By Thursday NBC reported:
“The current nationwide total of early or absentee ballots counted exceeds the 2016 total from two weeks before Election Day.… Republican-affiliated voters make up 44 percent of the early voting electorate and Democratic-affiliated voters make up 40 percent of the early voting electorate”…

At this point in the 2016 election, early Democratic ballots led early GOP ballots by 45 percent to 38 percent. This cycle, the Republican percentage has increased by 7 while the Democratic percentage has dropped by 5. Does that mean the oft-predicted blue wave was BS? Who knows? But it’s a sure bet the legacy “news” media won’t tell you.

    THE NEW MEME:

Trump says he ‘could tone up’ rhetoric after mail-bomb arrest By Jonathan Allen
    NBC – 27 Oct 2018
Now, with the midterm elections fast approaching, the president has to decide whether there’s greater risk continuing along the path he’s blazed by denouncing his opponents in highly personal and often deeply moralistic terms, or in shifting course and acting more like his White House predecessors…
In fact, he said in an exchange with reporters, he might ramp up his rhetoric.
“Tone down? no,” Trump said. “Could tone up. Think I’ve been toned down if you want to know the truth.”…

‘I could really tone it up’: Trump shows little interest in uniting the nation during crises
    WaPo – 26 Oct 2018
Time and again, the former reality television impresario has sought to sow discord, betting that most Americans prefer his pugilistic, divisive style over the sanitized mold of his predecessors…

24 Oct: Montel: France set to push nuclear closures beyond 2029 – NGOs
    by Muriel Boselli
The government will likely emphasise the battle against climate change in order justify a decision to keep 56 of France’s 58 reactors, which emit very almost no CO2, in service until 2029, anti-nuclear campaigners and experts told Montel…
The comments come as the French government prepares to release a draft energy road map, or PPE, that should say how it intends to meet the targeted nuclear cut. That decision is now expected in November…

The government may present a PPE with a trajectory stretching until 2035, rather than 2028, to include the goal of cutting nuclear use to 50% by then, as well as the possibility of linking reactor closures to start-ups of new-generation reactors, campaigners said…
NGOs were not invited to a meeting later Wednesday at France Elysee Palace, chaired by President Emmanuel Macron, with energy players, including the bosses of EDF and of Total, they said…

26 Oct: Reuters: France to decide over building new EPR nuclear reactors between 2021 and 2025: AFP
by Mathieu Rosemain and Caroline Pailliez
The French government will decide on whether or not to build a new generation of EPR reactors between 2021 and 2025, Agence France Presse (AFP) reported on Friday, citing a working document.
France’s nuclear industry could be asked to draw an “industrial plan” by mid-2021 that would guarantee future EPR reactors are able to produce energy at a reasonable price, estimated between 60 and 70 euros per megawatt, AFP reported…

25 Oct: Montel: German 52 GW solar cap to curb growth – lobby
Solar energy growth in Germany is likely to slow markedly in the coming years unless the government repeals a law that caps incentives, the BSW solar industry association said on Thursday.
German law only foresees offering feed-in tariffs for solar energy until the country has a cumulative installed capacity of 52 GW of photovoltaic systems.
That threshold might be reached “within a year”, the BSW said in a statement. Thereafter, rooftop solar deployment could whither to just a few hundred megawatts per year…

For knuckle-headed dumbness, how about Chris Turney’s little trip to Antarctica back in 2013-14? Some contempory doggerel tells the story…

    Cheers,

    Speedy

<strong>Mawson’s Spirit Gets Right of Reply.

    There seems no shortage, nor a dearth, of those who plan to save the earth;
Christian Turney, (“That’s Professor, thanks”), decided he would join their ranks,
So he organised his own crusade, somewhat pricey, mostly paid,
By largesse of the public purse – not the last time, nor the first.

His purpose and his noble goal – to sail towards the Southern Pole,
To collect, collate and then report, all data of the climate sort,
    Thus confirming something we all “knew” – the evil role of CO2;
Any changes he would show, compared to Mawson, years ago.

(To raise the profile of his scheme, he passed it off as “Mawson’s Dream”.)
Apart from that, not much to do, just hire a boat with Russian crew,
    And, to tabulate the climate ruin, invite some friends and camera crew in;
(These climate types, I don’t know why, are rarely, rarely camera shy.)

The ship sailed southward, out to sea, and all was going, swimmingly,
    However, as South Pole beckoned, a fact arose; no-one had reckoned;
For, despite what they had all been told, the South Pole still was JOLLY COLD!
And, nearly 60 k’s away from shore, the ship was blocked, could go no more.

Chris gazed upon the icy sea; “We’ll disembark, – just follow me,
To explore the ice; it’s truly awesome – we’re gonna do a Dougie Mawson!”
    So the kiddies all got off and played, but tragically, they overstayed;
For when they returned, the time had passed – the ship by now was stuck and fast!

    These latest antics off the coast, had worn quite thin with Russian host;
To Chris he cried: “You stupid jerk! You’ve cost me time and lots of work!
    I’m sure you thought it would be nice, to take that frolic on the ice;
You came back late, now, thanks to you, my ship is firmly in the pooh.”

“Your mission’s goal was crystal clear – you had but just the one idea,
    To preen and ponce, pontificate, while playing judge to mankind’s fate;
And earnestly parade your views, while looking good for camera crews –
But I’d be more impressed, my climate chap, if you’d learnt to read a weather map!”

“You’re very wrong, my Russian friend, for I know how this scene will end –
The climate models clearly show, a future lack of ice and snow,
And while models may be thin on proof, we treat them as the Gospel truth,
So therefore soon, perhaps today, we’ll free this ship and sail away.”

    Three days later…

But cold it was, and stuck they stayed – a few were getting quite dismayed:
“Oh won’t you come and save us please – we’d much prefer not stay and freeze –
And if your ship burns fossil fuel, it’s quite OK, we’re really cool.”
Our icebound heroes were at wit’s ends, and sent some “selfies” to their friends…

    That evening…

After dinner, and a well-aged red, Chris did toddle off to bed,
To ponder the ship’s immobile status, (it could only be a mild hiatus),
And what the press would have to say, as they saw that ice just melt away –
So he dreamed his dream, as he closed his eyes, of that long-awaited Nobel Prize…

He awoke at midnight, and became aware, of the ghost which stood in silence there,
His slimy skin and his icy breath – this guy was having a lousy death,
    And was not at all a happy ghost, being most abrupt towards his host;
“Wakey, wakey, Climate Priest – you know how it is with us deceased,

    Turning up at awkward hours, invoking all our spooky powers;
Groaning and moaning and delivering lectures, that’s afterlife for all us spectres,
    Floating on air along the halls, then disappearing through the walls;
But, I think you’ll find me extra awesome – for I am the ghost of Douglas Mawson!

And I, myself, have something new – a few “ideas” I feel that you
Would be advised quite full and well, to remember, recollect and tell
Your colleagues of a similar ilk, those who lie and cheat, defraud and bilk.
For I am annoyed at you, to say the least – you’ve cheesed me off, you Climate Priest!

One hundred years ago, nigh on the day, I steamed my boat into this Bay,
And, well before your climate “crisis”, we landed where the coast was iceless.
Now this self-same spot, post global “warming”, is blocked by all the sea-ice forming,
So, despite the “wisdom” of your creed, the facts, it seems, have disagreed.

But facts are dull, and oh so dreary – they contradict your precious theory,
But you climate chaps know what to do – you implement a “trick” or two,
To “educate” the public mind, and, (for causes of this noble kind),
You deem deception just and right. (All lies by Greens are small and white.)

As an example use this present case, this very boat, this very place,
Locked in ice you thought had melted; your theory, sir, I say, is belted!
But that conclusion would not do! For it contravened your point of view –
So, with sophistry and convolution, you ascribe both hot AND cold to man’s pollution!

Which makes your theory quite absurd – it’s nothing more than bovine merde –
Then, to show how much you just don’t know – you change the story as you go,
    And to ensure the public understands, you raise your voice and wave your hands;
You thus escalate the public fears, and gain approval from your peers.

But the fact remains, you can’t disguise – that what you tell are porky pies,
As has been done, times countless past, by those of upper climate caste,
Lies of fact, lies of exclusion, lies of logic, lies of collusion,
Are stock in trade for a thieves’ alliance – but they have no place in open science.

If you know your facts and have the proof – it’s very easy, tell the truth –
But if you’re any less than total Francis, you have to go and take your chances,
With cons and shams and tricks and cheats, hockey stick graphs and missing heats –
And oh what a tangled web we do weave, when first we practice to deceive!

You blazed your path to fame and glory, by telling less than half the story,
And if ever there was room for doubt, you’d skip the bits you wanted out,
    To reach the sure and safe conclusion, approved and blessed with team collusion;
And though you’re just a phoney prophet, you somehow get your jollies off it.

Half-baked theories and utter twaddle, you embed these in a “climate model”,
While your “settled science” – that proud consensus – is a roll-call of the vain pretentious,
Your fellow travellers, who so richly gain, from coasting on this gravy train.
But when your friends are wrong – which is hardly new – you label it as “Peer Review”.

But these shams and fakes and little tricks, they’re not science, they’re politics,
And what I find is really lame – you do these things and use my name,
As if to suggest or imply, of course, that I would support or like endorse,
You, your theory, or your acts, which both hide the truth and twist the facts.

So I’d thank you please, in future verbals, invoke the name of Joseph Goebbels.”
