Climate deniers are the delusional lizard-brain unworthy people who can’t see what preschoolers can. They threaten human survival. So sayth Dr David Shearman, founder of Doctors for the Environment Australia, a place where the scientific method and good manners go to die.
This is an Opinion piece the 3 million dollars a day ABC thought was “useful”.
Dr Shearman from Adelaide has the rare genius ability to diagnose hundreds of thousands of people with a mental disorder without even meeting them. Better than a telepathic MRI machine. Indeed he’s so smart, he can predict the climate, and with 100% certainty, so I say — cancel the satellites, who needs em? Why bother to measure upper tropospheric moisture when you could “just ask Dave”?
I apologize forthwith to the rest of the planet: all that money you have wasted installing temperature sensors, launching radiosondes and argo buoys. All along, Australia had David Shearman, SuperGod. He’s probably cured cancer. I can’t wait for him to tell us.
Today Dr David Shearman has diagnosed, and publicly, the mental state of Buzz Aldrin, Charles Duke and Harrison Schmitt, 3 of the 4 men alive who have walked on the moon. They are delusional, presumably along with the 28 million weather balloons which keep denying the hot spot. Naughty radiosondes.

Climate change denial is delusion, and the biggest threat to human survival
The belief of climate change deniers is usually unshakable, like that of the flat-earth believers or Holocaust deniers. Many delude themselves that there is a conspiracy.
Climate change delusion is dangerous to humanity, for it overtly or deviously prevents effective reduction of greenhouse emissions by governments in many countries, including the US and Australia, but is an increasing problem with the rise of right-wing governments in Europe and South America, including, Brazil where the new government has a foreign minister devoted to climate denial.
I am concerned to hear that a new Minister in Brazil denies we have a climate, or perhaps is a devotee of a new religion. Shearman is a little ambiguous here, which is disappointing, especially when he is describing unlisted medical conditions for the first time. Unless of course, Shearman is just mouthing off an unresearched rant as a member of a Labor-loving fan club and is waving his “doctor” qualifications while inventing medical slurs to intimidate and shut up opponents. But since the most well-paid editors in the country (at their ABC) published his esteemed opinion as a doctor, clearly we’re meant to read it as a medical thing.
Dr Shearman, Gastroenterologist, has also effectively declared at least 2 Nobel Prize winners in Physics are “the biggest threat to human survival”. So there, Ivar Giaever (Superconductors) and Robert Laughlin (Quantum Hall effect). And into the bin for you Freeman Dyson, Edward Teller, Frederick Seitz, Robert Jastrow (Founding Director of NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies) and William Nierenberg (Manhattan Project Member and Director Emeritus of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography). You are all mentally defective, so sayth the doc of intestines.

Now Shearman may protest that he didn’t name these people and it is unfair of me to do so, but if he had done ten minutes of research into “well known climate skeptics” he would know exactly who suffers the denialati affliction. Surely he wouldn’t diagnose tens of thousands of people, including half of meteorologists without doing basic high school research? Though we could forgive him perhaps if he only interviewed and psychoanalyzed several hundred sufferers. (Exactly how many did you study Doctor? What’s the confidence interval on your sample or is it hard to divide by zero?)
What if one skeptic is right?
Shearman may protest that he’s only talking about the stupid plebs with engineering degrees (like Dr David Evans, PhD, M.S. (E.E.), M.S. (Stats) [Stanford Uni], B.Eng, M.A., B.Sc., University Medal, [Syd Uni]. But that’s the thing: some skeptics may be delusional, but if any one skeptic is right, then even the deluded ones are closer to the truth than Dr Shearman is. Hence for Shearman to be making a useful well-reasoned point it follows that all skeptics must be wrong including the giants of physics (and two-thirds of geoscientists and engineers).
Put another way, it’s not possible for, say, Professor Richard Lindzen to be right, and 100,000 “delusional” skeptics to still be delusional.
But make no mistake I’m not saying that just because skeptics outnumber, outrank and out-reason climate believers that that means they are right about the climate. (The evidence shows that). But I am saying Shearman is a pompous fool.
Only 43% of certified climate scientists agree with the IPCC “consensus” that man-made CO2 is the main driver of climate change. But what would they know — they’re only climate scientists. “De-lusion-al too!”
Even emeritus professors can make wild unresearched generalizations:
“To the denier, there is no climate change — so coal is clean, coal is good, coal is cheap, it is our duty to export it to the poor of the world to give them electricity.”
Look in a mirror. The only people on Earth who deny climate change are the carbon-phobes who think the Earth’s weather was non-stop perfection around 1703.
He tosses out the usual inflated scary stats:
“The denier’s mind carries this absolution of coal beyond greenhouse emissions, to disregard the air pollution caused by coal. Outdoor air pollution is responsible for 4.2 million deaths a year around the world and many also in Australia.
“In New South Wales, the five coal fired power stations are a health scourge from their pollution which causes 279 premature deaths, 233 babies born with low birth weight (less than 2,500g), and 361 people developing type-2 diabetes every year, who would not otherwise do so. These are preventable deaths and illnesses.
Without mentioning the Lancet study that showed cold kills 20 times as many people as heat does. Indeed, across 13 countries cold killed 5.4 million people between 1985 – 2012. How many people has coal saved in the last 300 years? Countless millions more than it has killed. What was that antiquated saying “First do no harm?” If only he was a doctor…

Who’s confused about what “A Fact” is?
Here, he appears to think that economic models based on unverified climate models, wild assumptions, best guesses, and future projections are producing “facts”?
“The Nobel Prize for economics this year was awarded to Professor William Nordhaus for his economic modelling of climate change. One conclusion from his work was that coal would have no added value to industry if the cost of its externalities of health, social and environmental, were accounted for. The Australian Government has to deny these facts to support a continuation of coal power, some denial for an economics-above-all government.
A thousand other economists could create a thousand contradictory “Facts” about the same question, and if you let them start with 3000 model runs from 23 GCM’s you get 69 million versions of A Fact. And based on past performance, all of them will be wrong simultaneously.
Beware of what you wish for:
Unfortunately, the Government tolerates climate deniers, so their constituents must instead vote them out to save lives.
Or the voters might give the biggest climate denier the biggest win in Australia for twenty years, and then storm the US and Ontario as well.
Be aware that the dangerous and deluded are hidden among us. Shearman warns:

Lucky Shearman has the Sacred Wand of Truth so he can spot them.
You might wonder how an Emeritus Professor of Health from the University of Adelaide could say things which are so careless, incompetent, and somewhat resembling of the Salem Science Trials. But he probably learnt his climate science from The ABC, or at least, that’s where he gets his “news” from. He probably has no idea at all of the hundreds of thousands of hard scientists who are the skeptics discussing thousands of peer reviewed papers online. The ABC has let him down twice, first with filtered FakeNews, then by publishing him. That the ABC asked him no hard questions, sought no clarification, definition or data on such a preposterously apocalyptic and specious piece of denigration says everything you need to know about The ABC. Any member of Parliament who doesn’t hope to sell this parasitic incompetent behemoth is not worth electing.
On another ABC page today there is a guide to how to listen well. Strangely, it doesn’t mention calling people “deniers” anywhere?
Predictably, for a namecalling specialist who denigrates 54% of Australians Dr Shearman has a Member of the Order of Australia. Those awards can hit the pompous psyche especially hard. After winning something like that, even a gastroenterologist might feel compelled to unleash a rant about pop-psychology on atmospheric physics without doing as much as an afternoon’s research.
Last word: If Dr Shearman was stuck on a desert island he says his List of must-have books includes ones by James Lovelock describing him as “a brilliant scientist and thinker, never subject to the cage of academia“.
So, readers, do you want to break the bad news to him about the delusional Lovelock or shall I?

I have never met anyone who denies the climate is changing, however, I do not agree that CO2 is the major cause of those changes from all the scientific information and reading I have done over years. I am a degree qualified Engineer, quite capable to evaluate technical and scientific information. I question because I am not convinced the data proves or even agrees with the CAGW hypothesis. I am not a ‘denier’, that term coupled with his intent above is abhorrent to any normal human being.

I have never met a person who “denies climate change”. The retort, of course, is that “climate change” now has an accepted and defined scientific meaning beyond its plain English meaning. Curious. I didn’t accept or define the term beyond its plain English meaning.
Why is it exactly that those who use “climate change” in the new “scientific” sense have never shown an interest in finding something more specific to their claims about climate. Could it be that they like the emotional charge and flexibility of sloppy terms like “climate change”? Could it be that the vagueness suits them, gives them plenty of back-doors while relying on a conditioning effect through repetition?
After all, you’d reckon after we’ve been beaten over the skull night and day about scientific precision they could have done better than “climate change” and “global warming” to define this “greatest threat to humanity”. May as well call it Fred.

One would expect that should they truly regard climate change as the major cause of catastrophic bushfires they’d take some logical precautions such as building firebreaks, backburning in cool weather, preparing equipment and machines, and clearing access roads.
But no, they just locked up huge areas of forest, did no maintenance or preventative measures of any kind, did not allow anyone in, sat in capital city offices without ever looking at the problem, and waited for it all to inevitably burn.
Then they jumped up, pointed and shouted in shrill tones, “Look! Climate Change!!!”

Most reasonably observant people in Qld and NSW know that spring brings the most regular danger of fire, though we are always supposed to be amazed by spring fires. Even saturated Innisfail has gone a whole month without rain numerous times…but only between August and November.
Remember those burns in the Blue Mountains just after Abbott’s election? When the media took time off from ridiculing him for wearing firefighter’s clothing (what could be more absurd, except lifesaver togs?), it informed us of the “unprecedented” nature of fires before summer. Like drought then westerlies after July was a new thing for NE Oz, rather than the regular hazard it is. In 1895, at the start of the Fed Drought, there was plenty to burn in the north…and how it burnt that August when the westerlies roared after parching autumn/winter drought!
Someone eventually pointed out the obvious, especially the 1951 disaster, but the damage was already done in the minds of those still reading and watching mainstream media. Fortunately, that number is shrinking, unlike Queensland rainfall, which was lowest in long gone years like 1902, 1928, 1946. Of course, the drought around 2002 and these latest fires are a reminder that things may get better for a while on this continent of extremes…but not that much better, and not for long.

Jo, I’d agree initially but it’s clear that the issue was hijacked by the UN to create a funding stream independent of sovereign governments which I call tax by treaty. The now repealed carbon tax was simply a way for the UN to stick their grubby paws in our back pockets bypassing our government to fund their world government aspirations.

The complexity of life and the fine tuning of the universe cannot be explained either by chance or necessity. They can have been produced only by a Creator. So it is with reason itself. Even Darwin himself had a horrible doubt about his own intellect, and that of every human: if minds were formed by materialistic processes to favor survival, why in the world would we expect that they would recognize truth? The same is true with morality. Mal’s bad idea (pun intended for you Latin initiates out there) precludes the very idea of transcendent morality that rises above personal preference.
Here’s my take: Mal knows the truth that we were created, but for moral reasons he wishes he didn’t. That’s why he feels compelled to take swipes and cheap shots at a being he *says* didn’t create the universe and the world. We all are lost in our sin (yes, that’s a thing) and need the forgiveness of God through the suffering, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead: “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” – the Gospel of John, in the New Testament of the Bible, chapter 3, verse 16. The Creator re-created life in version 2.0, which you can share.

Even if there were an element of truth to what Shearman believes, he of all people should realize that there are side effect to medicine and the advice is always for the physician to consider if the expected benefit from the medication outweighs the risk. Therefore, even if there are downsides to CO2 generation, they need to be considered in context of the good that abundant, cheap energy does. Shearman obviously wears blinders.

One thing a doctor should be aware of is the number needed to treat (NNTT) and the number needed to harm (NNTH) .. well, a normal non-Australian doctor who may have studied actual things in actual medicine instead of the closed-loop stuff the garbage delivery service known as University teaches ’em here..
NNTT is an important factor in population health and I would guess the number of people who benefit from coal fired power is very, very high, with the NNTT being low (that is to say the number of people who getting access to power who see actual benefits is close to 1:1). That tends to be the case in evolved systems – when the benefits are clear, immediate and beneficial otherwise we kinda tend to reject it along the way.
The NNTH is probably very, very high – that is to say if we give power to a whole bunch of people, a massive number benefit and very very few are harmed. These ratios are precisely the way we’d like to see them and if this were medication we’d be declaring it as close to perfect as one could ever dare to dream for.
but as I said, Aussie doctor. Probably never even heard of the concept of NNTT and NNTH.

In their case they are told what is “best practice” and warned that, unless they follow it, they’ll be out on a limb if anything goes wrong. Remember a couple of years ago when a specialist oncologist was being told by *reporters* that he was underprescribing some chemotheraputic agent. Just like climate science, people who know the subject far better than the activists are harangued if they ever “sing out of key”.
You’re right that the AMA is one of the agents of evil. So is the government. The doctors themselves are just like the rest of us. There are good and bad among them, but mostly they’re not out to take over the world, the ninny quoted here obviously being an exception.
I’m disappointed you speak approvingly of NNT. I want to be treated as an individual. There is NOT a 17% chance I have heart disease because of a high cholesterol reading (or whatever). My personal chance is 100% or 0% — I either have it, or I don’t. A visit to the doctor is meant to decide which it is. NNT strikes me as a statistical game played by the pharmaceutical companies. They’re making a bomb from the absurd levels of overprescription of statins, bisphosphonates, etc., and surely are the bigggest beneficiaries.

In relation to NNTT I did mention population health which is of course what it’s intended for not individual health, much as a stable power supply for the nation is a population issue despite the odd (word chosen carefully) green who wants to live free of “carbon”. Just as with medicine for individuals, I would recommend such folk go for it. Of course we should assist them in their endeavor at every opportunity, warning them away from food, plants, plastics and all other horrible carbon-based thing 😉
As to medicine and teaching, I was accused of being a horrible lecturer for encouraging students to think, to question and to take nothing as gospel because I suggested they believe nothing, not even what I told them. I earned the most scorn by offering extra marks for any student who could find fault with what I taught – I have always been keen to learn what things I thought were true that were not. I found it shocking that for an advanced diploma of science, lecturers felt it was appropriate to preach and reward regurgitation without thought but hey, I guess it’s their sandpit, if they wanted to empty their bowels in it it’s their decision – my main protest was we were being paid to teach students and we owed them the best we could not the easiest to teach or the most convenient for us, and in science, teaching people to think for themselves and to question seemed paramount.

Hey, I’ve been prescribed known harmful drugs that I should *never* have used because the doctor is just experimenting to see if it works.. Know I’m older and aware of such things as NNTT and NNTH I can look these up.
NNTT =1, yay, I’ll take that! Glads to be aware of the statistics, pleased as punch that the number for all it’s shortcomings is available.. one dose needed, one person treated. I have no better assurance that this drug is a good one. NNTT is 10 or 20 or 50 or like the one my wife has just been prescribed, 60.. not so keen thanks – So 60 people have to use this thing for one person to see a benefit!? Now tell me somehow not knowing this number is better than knowing it? I’d be VERY unhappy to be the oblivious patient encouraged to take something like that with no idea of it’s efficacy (or lack thereof).
NNTH of 10,000? yup, that’s a drug worth a go – I’d be pleased to know a doctor would take a chance on a drug with such a low risk of harm – but imagine a number like 25 was out there and you were unaware of it and the doctor scribbled up a script for this disaster of a product. Again, these are intended for population health but I seem to have found a way to use these numbers for making my own decisions about the drugs I take – surely others can see too how being aware of them and having the numbers at one’s disposal could be beneficial? 😉

Karlos: even an NNT of 1 is not all that reassuring, since it depends on what “bad” outcome that treatment prevented. If it saved a life, great. If it just ameliorated some other perceived sign of illness, well, has that actually helped; has it slowed the car down, or just fiddled with the speedo needle? My problem with NNT isn’t the maths, it’s that it gives a veneer of rigour to a vague field, full of profiteers (just like climate).

As I wrote on Dr. Shearman in the last post, this man means well. GPs are trained from childhood to believe everything they are told. Their science thinking applies to their problem solving and does not include questioning their own beliefs. At school they study science and mathematics to get into medicine and do very well, so they think they are scientists. At University, they furiously study and remember everything too, passing well or not at all. In practice they listen carefully and largely unsceptically to their patients. They are problem solvers with a great body of knowledge, experience and responsibility. They even make good money so they think they are successful businessmen. Cars, holidays, property, lifestyle.
They can also be pig headed because they make hard decisions all the time, and stick to their decisions without any self doubt. They are also treated as gods.
At no time do they learn that people lie to them, take advantage of them, manipulate them. So when someone tells them the world is going to end because of fossil fuel, they do not question it.
I have found this with almost all GPs I know. The surgeons I know are much more skeptical, questioning, balanced. They know there might be an answer which is different from current opinion. Their world changes rapidly and it is not about the next magic antibiotic, but endless very specific problems which take ingenuity and risk. If not skeptics, they are inquisitive and prepared to be wrong. Also treated as Gods, but they have their doubts.
So I sympathise with Dr. Shearman, but he is utterly wrong. Simple science he already knows proves him wrong. Radio carbon dating proves there is almost no fossil fuel CO2 in the air. It does not mean there is no problem. It means we did not change anything and we are unable to change anything. CO2 levels are set by equilibrium between air and sea, driven by the sun. That is science fact.

I see that Dr. Shearman is more qualified, as a gastroenterologist. I greatly respect these people and their knowledge. However they live in a world where radiologists, microbiologists, clinical laboratories, physicians, instruments all tell them the truth. They depend on being told the truth. They should try the life of a policeman or a lawyer or a salesman or a politician. So in their privileged and protected world, they have no developed a B*s*t detector.
Mine went off many years ago and a simple check of the facts confirmed it. There is no fossil fuel CO2 in the air, so it is all made up. Endless diversionary arguments. Facts people can debate, confuse, intimidate, overwhelm their audiences and other experts. A smokescreen and control of words like ‘pollution’ and ‘climate change’ and ‘denier’.

For what it’s worth, doctors of many kinds (mostly retired) have been key supporters of this blog. I’ve found humble GP’s with long experience have a very good connection with reality and the failures of predictions, promises and pharmaceuticals.

He probably has the double pass bachelor degree MBBS. I have asked Medical Departments at universities why they use the term Doctor and no one seems to know. There is in the British system an MD, Medical Doctorate. It is a post graduate degree. There is even a M. Med. It is a Masters degree in Medicine.

Off course the Americans call their basic degree in Medicne an MD.

My ex wife is an excellent and popular GP in a big city in Australia. Some lady patients are prepared to wait 2 weeks to see her – rather than to go to any other GP in the same practice who is available at once.
Yet, at a personal level, she is totally irrational when I am compelled to deal with her so as to get what the courts decided. She has just gone for a 3 week holiday – so as to further delay matters. The court approved the divorce on the 8th of October and I am still waiting for the pension funds to be split up. I am 20 years older than her so it is not as though she were senile.
What I am getting at here is that even highly-skilled professionals are easy swayed by their emotions when they are in an area out of their competence.

Around the early 1980’s a SA farmer who had drawn a block on Kangaroo Island took the SA Lands Department to court around bad advice. In that they had insisted on his using a strain of sub clover that turned out to be oestrogenic and ruined his animal production enterprise. And won.
This caused rumblings in the circles of agricultural advising and the ststus of such advisors.
The response from Qld DPI was along the lines of:-
“The role of an agricultural advisor is to provide the best available advice, for and against. It is NOT their role to decide as to what management decision is made from that advice. So long as that is the case they have no such legal problem”.

To be fair, nobody, not one, in authority had any idea what to do. I was here in Sassafras listening to my scanner, wondering should we stay or go, fires were close, and I was listening to Area 13, listening to CFA trucks screaming for more water, more people. I will never forget the Mayday call from members surrounded in their truck south of Kinglake, with other units desperately trying to locate them, and the ‘Elvis’ unit asking for their roof number. At this time the poor woman who was the voice of VicFire was in tears. I threw out my scanner after that. It was of no earthly use. VicFire was 20 minutes and more behind events. No power on earth could have dealt with that day.

Former prime minister Malcolm Turnbull has been asked to front the Senate inquiry into his government’s controversial $443 million grant to the Great Barrier Reef Foundation early next year.
The request comes as state and federal environment ministers meeting in Canberra on Friday failed to agree on the wording over climate action, and a separate report identified a heavy environmental toll if the Galilee Basin coal mines including Adani’s proposed Carmichael project proceed.
Mr Turnbull has been offered any dates “that would be appropriate between now and early February”, and at “your preferred location” for a public hearing into the controversial grant to the non-profit organisation announced last April.
The former prime minister’s attendance is voluntary and it is understood he is the final witness the committee wants to interview. The inquiry has also won an extension to provide its final report by February 13.
Meanwhile at a meeting of environment ministers in Canberra, the Labor-led state and territory ministers criticised Melissa Price, the federal Environment Minister, for again omitting climate change from the agenda of the regular gathering.
“The science is frightening, unequivocal and clear – we are running out of time,” the Labor ministers said in a statement. “We must take swift and strong measures to reduce emissions now.”
“Yet the response of successive Liberal prime ministers has been one of delusion and deliberate inaction – and it is unacceptable that any action on climate change has again been left off the agenda at today’s meeting of environment ministers,” they said.
Ms Price later told journalists that the ministers had had “a very good conversation”, but could not agree on common wording. The minister will attend global climate talks in Poland from Sunday…
Separately, the federal government has its “bioregional assessment” of the cumulative impacts on groundwater, creeks and rivers from opening central Queensland’s Galilee Basin for mining.
Despite only modelling seven of 17 proposed coal and gas developments – including the Adani mine – the report predicted widespread impacts over 1.4 million hectares and as much as 6285 kilometres of streams…READ ON

***The Australian Youth Climate Coalition released results from the survey of 2345 people, which found 62.7 per cent thought school students had a right to demand action from the Government on climate change. Among Labor voters, this rose to 86.4 per cent.
A majority of 58.1 per cent also thought the Labor Party should show leadership on climate change and oppose Adani’s coal mine, including 80.7 per cent of Labor voters.
Today, students have invited adults to join them at March for Our Future rallies in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Cairns after Adani announced it would self-fund its mine and start work before Christmas.
“This new poll shows Australians support the students’ actions and that the Prime Minister’s attacks on the kids are mean-spirited and out-of-step with public opinion,” Australian Youth Climate Coalition national director Gemma Borgo-Caratti said…

Not sure whether the smart meter can throttle consumption or not, or whether it sends a throttling command to your aircon. If the aircon has a DRED interface, you could try and bypass it….not sure of the legality of such things though…

I read a comment piece a little while ago in the abc news about car speedos and how their accuracy can be impacted by a number of factors from tyre size, pressure etc. They then spoke about using a gps for checking your car speedo accuracy or using them in its place. The guy said no, don’t do it they aren’t that accuracte.You can’t calibrate and different quality depending on the manufacturer. Imagine that..we’re driving around with inaccurates GPS’s that are so far out that when I’m in the middle of Melbourne it thinks I’m still in Craigiburn. I wonder why I don’t get all these speeding fines when I pass a camera doing 117 in a 110 zone because my gps says I’m doing 110 and my speedo says 117. Dont trust your gps,tell that the millitary.

This is precisely the reason people drive along thinking ‘look at that maniac in that truck. How fast is he going?’ Car speedos always read high. Truck ones don’t, as they are individually calibrated to allow for various ratio combinations available depending on intended end use. I have heard, but cannot confirm, that car speedos are mandated to read low.
Your’ “so called expert” is probably still stuck in the old world where GPS accuracy was limited by the US so that it couldn’t be used against them. I agree, we should be able to comment so we can tell this maroon that hey, the US ain’t the only country with satellites, doncher know. I’ll bet he is an advocate of self driving cars though….. I guess that 100 metres is close enough for them.

If you dig into the parts catalogue for your car you will likely find that there are several speedo drive gears available. At least there were for Falcons. The utes were about 7 kph slow iirc as issued. I bumped mine so it was indicating just too slow after around 120 kph. Checked with gps.

Until July 2006 this rule specified an accuracy of +/- 10 percent of the vehicle’s true speed when the vehicle was travelling above 40km/h.
That is, at a true vehicle speed of 100km/h the speedo could indicate between 90km/h and 110km/h.
An odometer accuracy of +/- 4 percent was also a requirement.
From July 1 2006 a new standard began its phase in and by 1 July 2007 all new vehicles had to comply. The new standard requires that:
The speedo must not indicate a speed less than the vehicle’s true speed or a speed greater than the vehicle’s true speed by an amount more than 10 percent plus 4 km/h.
Odometer accuracy is no longer defined.”

Speedo drives used to be colour coded to match the vehicle. Ute diffs were typically ‘shorter’ or ‘longer’ depending on which terminology school you attended. This was supposedly to account for the load that the ute might carry, but, as most of us know, it was used primarily for quicker acceleration.
Your last para seems to encompass what I was trying to say. The + or- part has been done away with. At 100 Km/h 10% is of course 10, which gives us 90, +4 = 94, which explains Liberators 117 ( do the figures backwards, so to speak ) and it explains why trucks appear to speed. The truck is doing an indicated and mandatorily limited 100, and an actual 100.
O/T, but I have long believed speed limits to be yet another form of social engineering, and they, and BAC levels, have been used to batter us unto believing in ‘the government knows best’ thinking, or IOW 1984.
Before I get inundated with nasties, consider this: when, ever, do you encounter a mass chaotic system that adheres to rules? Although this might be better debated elsewhere.

The Australian Design Rules requires that for speeds above 40kph the speedo can’t read lower than your actual speed, ie it has to make you think you are going faster than you really are. There is a formula that I can’t recall at the moment to set the limit that the speedo can be out but it gives an allowable reading over the actual speed and increase as the speed rises. I can remember testing a Chev Corvette that had a reading of over 10kph higher than actual at 110kph and it easily complied with the ADR. This was not always the case as before sometime around the year 2000 the ADRs only gave a plus or minus factor on the speed reading (so don’t get caught if you drive an older car). Changing tyre sizes that affect the effective outside diameter of the tyre can affect the speedo reading taking it outside the speedo latitude range. In the past most cars had the speedo driven by a gear and cable drive from the back of the gearbox although these are now being supplanted by hall effect devices electronically connected to the speedo via the car’s computer rather than cable drive. An exception to this was the old 1200 VW where the speedo drive came from one of the front wheels!
BTW I used a calibrated GPS device to get the actual speed when testing speedo accuracy and for brake testing- this was accurate to within 0.1kph.

Yep calibrate on a GPS speedo. The rule doesnt allow much for the idiotic + 1kph tolerance for getting a ticket! Thats not even the needle width on most mechanical speedos. GPS speed can be accurate and depending on the conditions it can also be very inaccurate. The problem is that most people have no idea what the GPS speed accuracy is any given time. You should check your GPS specifications. They will not give an absolute accuracy as you would expect with other measuring devices.

US-Polish climate scepticism. Reference to the IPCC 1.5°C report is constant in Katowice: at press conferences, in plenary sessions, at side-events and informal meetings, in the corridors. This is because its scientific findings serve as an undisputed negotiating common ground.
Well, almost undisputed. The very same day the IPCC celebrated its 30th anniversary, the Silesian Region of Polish trade union Solidarity issued a joint statement with US think-tank the Heartland Institute, known for its climate denial stance.
The statement claims “there is no scientific consensus on the main causes and consequences of climate change,” going against the rigorous scientific conclusions established by the IPCC. “The Silesian Region of Solidarity, the Secretariat of Mining and Energy of Solidarity, and The Heartland Institute express scepticism of the assertions of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change that the world stands at the edge of a climate catastrophe,” the statement goes on.
The group said they met during COP24 and agreed to begin working together more closely “to advance sound, science-based public policy”. It also said that Solidarity translated the first edition of the Heartland-published Climate Change Reconsidered series in 2009 and that it was very satisfied by the new science and policy presentations from Heartland during their COP24 meeting. “The presentations assured Solidarity that their doubts about current, alarmist climate policy are correct,” the statement also reads…
Saudi-Arabia. The evening before, environmental NGOs awarded the fossil of the day to both Saudi-Arabia and Brazil.
It has to be pointed out here that NGOs are allowed to follow the negotiations in the numerous meeting rooms installed in the premises of COP24, which provide them with some insights of what is going on behind closed doors.
For the NGOs, Saudi-Arabia is the most consistent, insistent and persistent voice undermining ambition in the negotiation so far this week. The country called for example for the deletion of the term “ambition mechanism” in the preamble to the Global Stocktake text on the grounds that it pre-judges the outcome of it, the NGOs explained.
As for Brazil, the deforestation plans of the Amazon by newly-elected Jair Bolsonaro “are no laughing matter”…
South America. After Brazil retracted to host the next UN climate conference, Costa Rica, Chile, and Guatemala offered to host the conference and thus maintain the venue of the next summit in a Latin American country…

Generating some 80 percent of its energy from coal, Poland comes second only to Germany in its consumption of fossil fuels throughout the European Union — something reflected yearly in its winter air quality…
Coinciding with the conference this week, the Polish trade union Solidarity aligned itself with the Heartland Institute, a Chicago area-based conservative think tank that has long advocated against climate science and climate action.
In a joint statement released on Wednesday, Solidarity and the Heartland Institute took aim at the October IPCC report and downplayed the U.N.’s findings.
According to the statement, the two parties “express skepticism” over the report and reject “that the world stands at the edge of a climate catastrophe.” Together, the organizations stress that “there is no scientific consensus on the main causes and consequences of climate change. Neither organization opposes the goal of clean air nor supports the elimination of coal from the world’s energy portfolio.”.
The United States notably lacks its own pavilion at COP24 and U.S. movements domestically toward fossil fuels and away from decarbonization has largely been seen as a drag on global climate talks.
But the Heartland Institute won’t be the only display of U.S. support for fossil fuels during COP24. On Monday, Trump administration officials are set to partake in a side event promoting fossil fuels and nuclear power…
On Thursday, as the first week of talks wrapped up in Poland, the U.S. government announced plans to ease carbon-emissions rules for new coal-fired plants, despite no current plans to build new coal plants in the country.

Outrageous though this is, it is only an online opinion piece and while it would hold big appeal to extreme alarmists, I would think that in the general population they are a small minority church. I doubt that there are very many readers of ‘ABC online’ anyway, let alone those searching for ABC opinion on climate change.
Incidentally, there is no formal ABC procedure available to make a complaint against an ABC online article (and they make it difficult to complain about actual broadcast programs).

Skeptics of climate catastrophism often say that while anthropogenic climate change is not a problem they are still supportive of efforts to fight against genuine pollution and other real environmental problems.
So it’s actually a shame that Dr Shearman has used his carbophobic hobby horse to distract everyone from the real and measured environmental issue with Australian coal-fired power stations – an issue not seen to the same extent in coal power in other countries.
The passing reference Shearman makes to the fine particulate pollution is the only credible argument he has against coal fired power. (Strange that nobody else in the comments above has mentioned this already.) In the Environmental Justice Australia report he linked, the methodology seems generally sound, although it still admits many assumptions which can be questioned plus two more of my own:
• It assumes pollution levels to be spread across wide areas proportional to inverse square distance from the air quality detectors, without taking wind direction into account. Oddly, the wind suddenly leaps into existence when trying to attribute a percentage of particles to power stations. If the air sampling locations are not random there is a chance they’ve been placed specifically to catch power station emissions. That would mean a higher than normal measurement is being distributed across the whole region, prior to multiplying by the power station contribution percentage. Even if the wind traceback to power stations was done correctly, the result could be biased higher from the sampling placement.
• “That the toxicity of PM 2.5 in NSW is the same as that observed in North America where the risk estimate for mortality was derived. Suggesting otherwise is like claiming that cigarettes do not cause lung cancer in Australia because there has never been an Australian study of this question.”
Actually the mortality is also affected by the quality of available healthcare. Is anyone in the environmental movement going to argue that the Australian healthcare system is no better than the American healthcare system?
Just to put the scale of the problem into perspective though, the report Shearman cites says this:
What about the origin of the other 82% of fine particles in the most densely populated area of the study? Nothing is said by Shearman about the source of the majority of these deadly fine particulates! Quite possibly another example of the crusader who cares about “the planet” more than the people in it. The EnviroJustice report hints that the major source is oil-based transport exhaust, but it’s obviously easier to blame a small number of power stations than the manufacturers and drivers of trucks and cars.
Nonetheless, the amount of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and sulphur dioxide that are legally emitted by NSW power plants is greater than is permitted even by China. Yes, really. That this excess continues to be tolerated despite availability of technical solutions ought be a source of national shame. If there is no economical use in retrofitting old plants nearing the end of their service life, that’s also an argument for adding new HELE coal power with particle and sulphur scrubbers in their design from day one. But in no way can PM2.5 and sulphur dioxide be taken as the proof that a total shutdown is the only solution or even the best solution.
Shearman rails against the existence of coal power, yet the very environmental group that he cites for support are not asking for coal power to be shut down. In their own submission to the NSW government they give a list of current emissions limits and their suggestions for new limits. The proposed limits are in line with the EU and China, but oddly enough are not zero. Which brings us to what is probably the most unscientific statement in Shearman’s entire sermon:
That brand of alarmism is eerily reminiscent of the anti-nuclear brigade telling us that all radiation is unsafe at any level, the well known Linear No-Threshold Hypothesis. Carry that belief to its logical conclusions. Should we tell the police there is no safe level of pepper spray and tear gas? Should we tell the Greens party that for birds there is no safe number of wind turbines?
The study author supports this belief with a consensus argument from ignorance: Scientists have been unable to find a lower threshold, therefore there isn’t one! Who knew that absence of evidence was evidence of absence. With so many competing causes of death it is no surprise the threshold is hidden down in the noise of all the other causes of death. Safely on board the consensus train, they apply the following mortality rate without threshold:
The background levels of naturally occurring fine particulates are 2.5 μg/m^3 in Sydney. So you can triple the natural levels and have it cause 4.4% of annual deaths in Sydney, or you can shut down all coal plants and ban all fossil-fueled vehicles completely and the fine particulates will still cause 1.5% of deaths in Sydney. But then how many more deaths will be caused by unaffordable energy? Yet a total shutdown is not needed if there is a lower level of exposure above zero that is still safe.
Our bodies, and the bodies of all living things, have barriers, internal cleanup processes, and immune systems precisely because we are surrounded by completely natural toxic and health-threatening substances. These defenses get invoked regardless of whether the irritant is man-made pollutant or naturally environmental. The fact our bodies can adequately deal with small exposures non-fatally is proof there is a safe level of air pollution.
As most PM2.5 is formed by secondary gas reactions, not emitted directly from the power station, any attempt to cut SO2 and NOx emission would also greatly reduce PM2.5 pollutants.
I live over 100km from the nearest coal power station. But I’m willing to pay 5% more for electricity to fund the installation and operation of SCRs, ESPs, and bipolar agglomeration technology on both old and new coal power stations to fight a genuine coal power pollutant. I hope other skeptics of CAGW would say the same.
I live near a major highway. I’d be even more keen to see the real source of this PM2.5 pollution get solved by new vehicle designs. As more people become aware of this health risk, we may even see particulate pollution reduction becoming the main selling point for electric and hybrid vehicles. It’s certainly more efficient to scrub the exhaust when all combustion is happening in one big power station.

At least 12 climate activists due to attend COP24 have been denied entry at the Polish border or deported, Climate Action Network (Can) claimed on Friday.
Members of the network attributed this to Poland’s controversial anti-terror legislation passed ahead of the UN climate summit Cop24, which gives authorities the power to ““collect, obtain, gather, verify, process and use information, including personal data about persons posing a threat to public safety and order, including outside the borders of the Republic of Poland”.
The environmental umbrella group, which represents over 1,200 NGOs worldwide campaigning on climate change, voiced fears that the Polish authorities may have compiled a “blacklist” of activists.
One of the cases was Nugzar Kokhreidze, a 350.org activist and member of the Georgian delegation…
“As host of the most important climate summit since Paris, Poland has the eyes of the world on it and the question is, what sort of host does Poland want to be?” Greenpeace Poland director Bohdan Pękacki said. “Will it embrace the demands of people demanding action and allow their voices to be heard or silence them through denied entry?”…

We are 12 years old to prevent the most tragic consequences of the climate crisis. Sitting at one table with climate liars who have in their “portfolio” also denying the harmfulness of smoking, will not change reality, and will only make miners harder when the world escapes us. The only solution for them and for the whole country is fair transformation. If we are not forced to do so by political and scientific reality, then economic reality will do it. Wind energy is already 50% cheaper than that produced from coal combustion. The heads of trade unions should concentrate on finding solutions for miners in this reality.

That’s what you work out with the 97% of global warming/climate change/climate disruption/extreme weather morphers who haven’t studied the science but simply rely on what they’re told repeatedly. They really associate CO2 with dirty smokestacks and air pollution so pointing out how CO2 is not and cannot ever be a thermostat to control global temperature simply sees them morph off into sooty pollution land. So climate change becomes this wonderful catch all for sticking their fingers in their ears with rational science arguments and going nahnahnahnahna! The only thing that will sway them in the long run from this doomsday cult will be the inevitable failure of the lunar prescriptions to try and control the earth’s temperature. Rolling blackouts with the national grid should make them sit up and pay attention.

Shearman raised the subject of the NSW pollution and its impact on health. I believe that he was referring to the faulty Latrobe Valley report generated by an activist doctor in that area. This report, based on another faulty report from New Jersey, has been thoroughly debunked by Latrobe Valley health professionals, who pointed out that the region has many other mitigating factors such as a high level of smoking, poor dietary habits and sedentary lifestyles.

Nice try. Do you understand what a literature reference is? Let me help you. When you see a superscript number next to a statement/ phrase/ word, it will direct you to the source material. Much of what is referenced comes from the centre of this debate, including data published by AGW proponents.
Furthermore, do you understand what an ad hominem argument is? It’s an arugment based on denigrating the person, not the position. The central tenet of Dr Shearman’s argument as published is that the person, not the argument is at fault. He calls them delusional. That’s a Dr making a public diagnosis, a behaviour which is considered ONE OF THE WORST PUBLIC BEHAVIOURS IN WHICH A DR CAN ENGAGE. He does so without undertaking a consultation (which by the way, he is not qualified to do given that he is a gastroenterologist, not a psychiatrist) with a single specified person. Delusion is a feature of psychosis, a particularly important mental health condition with implications for the individual in terms of freedom to function independently.

Gray et al: Eleven-year Solar Cycle Signal in the NAO and Atlantic/European Blocking. Quarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society 2016 [another institution of high repute. Who needs your CSIRO? Amateurs, the lot of them.]
You can locate each paper by posting the reference into a good internet search engine. Even Google Scholar may work. ( I don’t use it so I haven’t tested it.) You can download them free of charge and read them. Make sure you have a good dictionary to hand because these are real scientific papers written by grown-up scientists, peer reviewed and published, so they may have some big words in them.
Before you start reading, check the bios of all the authors. You’ll find they aren’t amateurs at all.

It’s actually very sad when a man specialising in work from a totally unrelated field of science totally looses perspective that his ‘field of excellence’ is totally restricted to that field when making comment. Indeed, I would suggest his psychiatric specialist colleagues might take a dim view of his trespass into their field when putting dumb diagnoses onto people of whom he both knows little is too lazy to find out about but worse presents no argument on the science. Indeed, his accusations reflect a narcissicm that would do Mr Turnbull proud.
Maybe this chap was a mathematician, as a minimum, in a past life. At least then he may be capable of a making some reasoned argument to support his belief on global warming. He thoroughly discredits himself as any form of scientist, or he has aged somewhat and forgotten what science is all about. As pointed out, it only takes one person to present a reasoned argument which, with a basis of ‘proof’, can pull down the entire edifice of what has been believed to be gospel for a millenium. I believe Dr Shearman is the equivalent of a flat earther which I had understood was a problem resolved in the middle ages. Obviously not!
As a former specialist doctor I must admit to a depth of embarrassment the way many in the profession profess to have, or carry on as though their qualifications qualify them to have almost a devinity in knowledge regardless of what scientific or sociological question is posed over our existence. It’s very sad, a hangover from a long ago past when doctors held a position, in a society that was limited educationally, as fonts of wisdom in many non medical matters. It seems some still seem to consider this their rightful position. The ego and hubris shown by Dr Shearman says much about him; a man with a closed mind to all but his own opinions. However, one could also say, this coarse attack on people who hold other opinions based on their own expertise in their science, or who read widely to establish a basis of the arguments, those who hold and express alternate views, are increasingly exposed to this ranting raving mob of true believers who cannot even bring themselves to consider other reasoned arguments. It is the real sign that they are losing or have already lost either the debate, their destructive illogical cure for their problem, or both. Just look at Macron’s Paris currently.

The Left and other fraudsters call it Climate Change or sometimes just Climate but they really mean ‘Global Warming caused by burning fossil fuels’. Climate has always been changing. Compelling evidence as follows is that CO2 , in spite of being a ghg, has little to no effect on climate.
1. In the late Ordovician Period, the planet plunged into and warmed up from the Andean/Saharan ice age, all at about 10 times the current CO2 level [3].
2. Over the Phanerozoic eon (last 542 million years) there is no correlation between CO2 level and AGT [3].
3. During the last and previous glaciations AGT trend changed directions before CO2 trend [2].
4. Since AGT has been directly and accurately measured world wide (about 1895), AGT has exhibited up and down trends while CO2 trend has been only up. [2]
5. Since 2001, average temperature uptrend calculated by Global Climate Models (GCMs, aka General Circulation Models) which assume CO2 causes AGW is about twice measured. (Section 8 of my blog/analysis)
6. Analysis of CO2 and Temperature data 2002-2008 shows a close correlation between dCO2/dT and lower tropospheric temperature. This demonstrates that CO2 follows temperature and not the reverse. [30]

NASA/RSS has been measuring average global water vapor by satellite and reporting numerical data since 1988. The data is reachable through http://www.remss.com/measurements/atmospheric-water-vapor/tpw-1-deg-product which eventually gets to http://data.remss.com/vapor/monthly_1deg/tpw_v07r01_198801_201810.time_series.txt where the last two digits are the month. When a new month is reported the previous month is deleted.
According to these data, WV trend has been increasing about 1.5% per decade, 8% since 1960. This is about twice that calculated from the increased vapor pressure due to average temperature increase of global surface water. Data since Nov, 2017 have been below the linear trend.
WV is a ghg and its increase has contributed (my estimate about 35% 1909 to 2017) to planet warming as a result of the (misleadingly named) ‘greenhouse effect’. The slight increase in warming is welcome and self-limiting but some infrastructure improvement is probably cost effective to reduce flood damage.

Quoting Nobel Laureate Professor William Nordhaus is fraught with difficulties. Although he believes in climate alarmism, in a paper published last year he calculated that onerous UN climate mitigation policy costs far exceed the costs of unmitigated climate change.
However, Nordhaus (in common with consensus climate alarmists) only looks at global carbon taxes. But all 200 nations implementing a common glocal policy is never going to happen. From the UNEP Emissions GAP Report 2018 I have calculated only a minority of countries have committed to reducing their emissions. Of the G20 countries, the aggregate increase in emissions from 9 emissions-increasing countries will far exceed the aggregate decrease in 11 emissions-decreasing countries. Further, of the countries either in the G20 and/or have a population > 30 million, the net increase in emissions from 2015 to 2030 from the NDCs will be around 10 GtCO2e, on top of the 52 GtCO2e in 2015. It gets worse for climate mitigation countries like Australia and the UK.
A fundamental innovation in economic theory back in the 1870s was marginalism. That is, to understand the impact of actions or changes on economic actors one had to look at the marginal impact on those actors and not the total impact on the economic area. In understand the adoption – or lack of adoption – of mitigation policy by nation states one has to look at the marginal policy costs and the marginal prospective climate impacts forgone. Even if one makes the ludicrous assumption (like the UK Stern Review 2006) that the costs of global climate mitigation are one tenth of those of catastrophic climate change, if (as at present) countries with a small minority of global emissions adopt emissions-reducing policies, these countries will be worse off by acting than doing nothing at all. Conversely, by some countries acting will be net-beneficial to non-policy countries. That is, from William Nordhaus and others, the relation between rising average temperatures and climate change is not a linear function, but a quadratic or cubic or exponential function. Therefore, a few countries acting will significantly reduce the policy cost to prospective climate cost ratio of the non-policy costs. Rather than China or India being encouraged to follow the lead of trail-blazing countries like Britain or Australia, the economic logic dictates that trail-blazing policies has shifted the marginal policy / climate cost ratio for the follower countries in such a way as to make it less worthwhile for these other countries to implement policy. This blatantly obvious position I worked out in the third of seven posts in October 2013.
