Congratulations to Nigel Farage and all teh Brexiteers. The Tory politicians now have to consider their jobs are on the line, unless they adopt Teresa May’s tactic of saying one thing and doing another.

However the growth of Green parties in the EU elections is frightening, 20% of the German vote. However it is all the 18-25 year olds who want no Carbon Dioxide emissions by 2050. That alone indicates they are the usual invincible youth completely out of touch with reality but it has to be preferable to chasing Libensraum in Poland and Russia like their grandparents.

And to be fair, even the Pope is demanding action on Climate Change, without having the foggiest idea what that is. Like everybody else. Pope Frank also wants open borders but is against *bortion on demand, so just confused about it all. Perhaps he will resign and we can have three popes again. There were 13 times with three popes and even a year of 4 popes.

It is also totally confusing to have a UKIP and a Brexit party in the same election. I have no idea how Farage started one successful party and ended up starting another one which just beat the Tories and Labor both. Perhaps the Tories can offer him a job as the next PM? The Tories do not seem to have one as even Boris seems half hearted on Brexit.

I note the “evangelical” nature of German youth- though not peculiarly German.Europeans have been largely communalists based on old tribal/ethnic bonds and individualists are outliers.I believe that Australians also exhibit the same traits. The observation that one may make I guess that we are vulnerable to manipulation. THat suits the Elites.

The question for political parties is why no one is tackling Global Warming, kicking out the stumps from the whole Green nightmare. Only Tony Abbott had the guts to say Climate Change is Crap. Others just accept it and chase the Green youth vote, like Malcolm Turnbull. While the left of politics tries to educate children with Safe Schools, Global Warming, Climate Change, Fascism disguised as anti Fascism, racism disguised as multi culturalism and class envy, the conservatives do nothing. Many find it easier to agree, like private school educated Turnbull and Shorten.

There is great space for any government to actually educate the people without propaganda. Organize public debates between scientists. Get an official opinion from the CSIRO/BOM with proof.
Establish the failure of Global Warming. Support Dr. Peter Ridd in his quest to see the truth is told about the Great Barrier reef and restore faith in Reef tourism. After all Malcolm and Lucy Turnbull without explanation or justification took $444 million of our money to support and embellish the reef lie and gave it without due process to people who had not even asked for the money. I believe that was criminal and Morrison should ask for it back.

So why are governments around the world staying out of man made Global Warming but forcing everyone to spend on windmills and solar panels, paid for with theft from the poor? The truth is that the huge waste of public money is such big business for bankers like the Turnbulls and ex Liberal party leaders like Dr. John Hewson. Our money though should be spent on major development, like actually changing the planet to distribute or harvest water or building water infrastructure or a search for the answer to fusion which powers the sun. The Romans and the Babylonians and the Nabateans controlled water as their essential commodity. Channels, aquaducts, lakes, underground storage. The Greens refuse to let us do so. Worse with massive Green spending we will just end up with a million useless windmills, a 21st century version of the Easter Island statues, immobile and mute testimony to a failed religion and enormous wasted expense and no water for a booming population. In fifty years, a million useless votive statues for our thirsty grandchildren and a world run out of coal, gas, oil and even uranium. It will be seen as a century of the most thoughtless waste of resources in human history.

Dishonest politicians like May and Turnbull are the problem. Not Abbott, Trump, Farage, Salvini, Bolsanaro, Orban. Most of the rest are just mainchancers playing insincere games like Albanese who is dead against Adani and all coal but is reluctant to say so today in Queensland. It is amusing just to listen to him avoid answering the question.

When will the Australian government actually address man made Global Warming? If the government can direct 350 full time CSIRO scientists to prove GLobal Warming and could not prove it in a decade at a cost of $500Million, why not admit it isn’t true instead of printing glossy brochures about Climate Change? Even Tim Flannery has gone quiet and the Climate Council is having trouble getting publicity for their lost cause.

The only government sponsored activity we have seen is the retrospective cooling of the early 20th century by the BOM. It is time for the CSIRO or the BOM or NASA to get up and speak the truth as Peter Ridd has done. Yes, they will take the same risks.

At the very least, the Turnbull millions should be returned immediately and the whole process subject to parliament and justification. That’s $80 cash from every family in Australia. Without explanation.

“If the government can direct 350 full time CSIRO scientists to prove GLobal Warming” this has been requested many times of the IPCC, silence is the reply. They havent got any proof, as it is all a lie.

Because the leaders will be summoned to New York and ticked off by Christina Figueres or somebody else in the UN, for not staying on the program and straying off the song sheet. Abbott was made an example.

Lets not rake over the entrails, but I would like to put in a request for more than one god.

A mate has gone to live in Hobart with his young family, in fear and trepidation, and he wants me to join him. But I refused on the grounds that global cooling has begun and Tasmania is an island close to Antartica. He laughed and then said “whats the real reason?”

The South Is NZ lakes were carved out by huge glaciers. The debris is still there at 3000′ above the lake level up the side mountains.

Yes, NZ’s South island reaches from 40 degrees to 47 degrees, so it would be Fjordland all over again. The Southern tip of Tasmania as well. The sun strength in the rest would be unchanged. What is odd about Global Cooling and an ice age is that it is the warm periods which are unusual and wonderful for mankind, not the cold ones. Global Warming is just stopping, except that James Hansen and Al Gore saw a great personal opportunity in arguing the exact reverse. They are the joint fathers of fake man made warming.

That’s ice up to Launceston. (41.4332° S) Which is slightly closer to the equator than Rome (41.9028° N)

It’s a good rule of thumb, North or South. It’s hard to imagine New York at 40.7North with 3km of ice on the roof, just 10,000 years ago. If the ice age returns, no matter how much power we have, these latitudes are unliveable. The insanity of worry about 60North, Murmansk, St. Petersburg, Anchorage, Bergen is silly. Europe would be under KM of ice. There would be no France, no Germany, no Poland, no England, no Scandinavian countries. Half of Spain and Italy would be gone.

Why is the world worrying about sea rises in New York? Green rubbish science. We should be celebrating the warm ages, the end of the Little Ice Age and what are we doing? Building useless windmills. Idi*ts.

I think it would take quite a few years for the ice to get that bad. In the meantime even the Greenies (well some of them) will have realised what is happening and do their bit. As their bit would probably involve running around in decreasing circles screaming hysterically it might not help, but at least it would keep them harmlessly occupied (and who could tell the difference?).

If I may chime in from the geological perspective:

As an undergrad in the late ’60’s – early 70’s, the evidence at that time suggested that a transition from glacial-to-interglacial, or vice-versa, took thousands of years. By the mid-1990’s, enough evidence had accumulated that the geological community decided that the transition time was very brief, perhaps on the order of just a few decades. Richard Alley himself argues that the transition time frame is less than a decade; I’m willing to let the glaciologists among us continue to sort it out.

But, what we have to consider is that if the global atmosphere is suddenly much colder, that means that it contains less moisture, hence there should, in all likelihood, be less precipitation. Look at Antarctica — — technically, it is a desert, since it receives less than twenty centimetres of (liquid) precipitation per year. So, what the geological community did not have correct in the time frame for interglacial/glacial transitions, they DID have correct in terms of the time it takes for those glaciers to form, viz. thousands of years.

If the Holocene Interglacial suddenly ends, we could see ‘average global temperature’ drop by four, five, or even six Celsius degrees in about a decade or two (or less, if you believe Alley), but the continental glaciers themselves would still take several thousand years to form.

The upshot of all this is that the warmunists would simply tell us that all of our carbon dioxide “caused” things to become glacial, so they were right all along (h/t The Day After Tomorrow).

                Heads, they win; tails, we lose … … … … …

                Regards to all,

                Vlad

The proper question is not the time it took for kilometre-deep ice-sheets to form, but the time and conditions required to make modern Europe basically unliveable.

Year round snow would make agriculture essentially unviable.

Year-round snow too deep to clear on average streets and minor access roads, along with temperatures low enough to make most housing and infrastructure unusable without major modification and huge heating costs, would make lcontinued life there unviable for most.

The fact that humans can live in much of the arctic and sub-Arctic should not distract from the fact that populations are typically sparse and rely on the summer growth period to stock up on food and fuel.

This is not an economic option for hundreds of millions of people in a year-round freeze and facing the need to suddenly adapt.

Th3re is evidence of glacialconglomerates that date from the Carboniferous(280-300 mya) at the Rocket Creek reserve near Bingara NSW.30S. The Continent would have drifted. Then again glaciers do form at altitude as distinct from latitude.

        Perhaps not Greebo.

        Farage has a different perspective:

‘Add up the Brexit vote, add up the Ukip vote.. add the Conservative vote, who are still a party that says we are going to leave, and you will find that Leave beat Remain.

‘In fact what you will find is that overall the country is 52-48 in favour of leaving.’

He added: ‘We are supposed to be a democracy. We were promised this would be implemented.’

You need to remember that with the optional voting system in the UK, the statistics and percentages get knocked around all over the place from one election to the next. Roughly 5.5 million who voted Leave in the referendum didn’t vote at all this time because they are p*ssed off at having to vote for an EU they were promised they would not be a part of after 29th March. The turnout this time was only 37% overall, versus 72.2% for the Brexit referendum in 2016.

Remainers are thus claiming that 5.5 million Leavers have now changed their minds about leaving and want to stay after all — which is a total fiction. You still have that latent pool of support for Brexit which is excluded from the recent stats. The election result is likely skewed in favour of the Remain camp, but it is only a partial picture.

I have just posted three one page gate breakers, to be used in the face of alarmist teachers and other gate keepers.

One is paleo, on the topic of the Little Ice Age and Medieval Warm Period.

One is on the role of the sun in present global warming.

If you are referring to his ’12 rules’ book; I found some of it very easy to read and absorb and some quite difficult. I’m near the end now and, on the whole, it is worth the effort.

12 Rules is one of my favourite audiobooks, especially when things seem difficult.

Graeme may be speaking of Maps of Meaning, which is far more impenetrable to the layman. I’ve tried a few times, getting a little further each time.

Yep Annie, 12 Rules. He starts out ok then seems to wander all over the place. Have tried to read it a number of times, eventually put it back in the bookshelf. I read a lot of techo stuff and non-fiction, but found this one far too difficult. Pity – I like what the man says.

Pity. I find 12 Rules, and JBP, compelling. However, I have never tried it in printed form, so maybe that’s it. I am fairly deaf, and use hearing aids. These can stream from my phone, and thus I listen to audiobooks whatever my (in)activity. JBP narrates his books himself, and maybe that takes the dryness out of his tomes, as inflection and emphasis can transform. Perhaps give this a try. Err, not the hearing aid bit, obviously.

His lecture after the “no” was good, but you have to remember he is a clinical psychologist.

The suprise was that he worked with the UN for two years on big issues. He was speaking from first hand experience with the endless and self contradictory and divisive wish lists of the UN.

His answer like Bjorn Lomborg’s was that there are a hundred more important things, there are no solutions and certainly no easy solutions, no certainty of success or even a measure of success and a world which wants cars and planes and phones and electricity. His positive advice was to make the poor rich and the environment would be much better, overpopulation would stop and we would have a shared responsibility for the planet.

This is particularly significant with plastic straws, plastic bags and the like. The problem is coming from the Ganges and Indus and the Nile and the poorest countries, not from Australia and New Zealand, but we are the ones trying to fix it by banning plastic straws and bags and coal in our country? It makes no sense at all. Its self flagellation to save the world, painful and useless.

Have been reading Mikko Paunio’s GWPF report today, and it seems that the greens in Europe have stopped incineration in many European cities because of concerns about CO2 emissions. The Itslian Campania disaster is worth looking at to see what can go wrong when the greens interfere with Rubbish disposal.

Anyone who has travelled through SE Asia can attest to the massive amounts of plastic waste, although plastic bottles may well be the result of westerners afraid to drink the local water. I have been to Thailand a number of times, upcountry, and the waste is staggering. The huge, fast flowing rivers in that country must seem a convenient disposal system.

TdeF is correct, of course. All that nonsense Krudd and Mallard espoused about us ‘taking the lead’ was just that, nonsense. The idea that 650,000,000 SE Asians will take the lead from a country most have never heard of is frankly idiotic. Never mind 1,400,000,000 Indians. 2 BILLION people shamed into recycling their plastic because some folk in inner city Australia say so?

just realised I accidentally posted this on jo’s previous thread.

ABC finally noticed? no doubt they’ll get credit for exposing what they should have been informing the public about for years:

27 May: Youtube: 12min05sec: ABC 7.30 Report: The dark side of Australia’s rooftop solar energy obsession
    posted by ABC News (Australia)
Rooftop solar is considered one of Australia’s renewable energy success stories.
But an audit of the clean energy regulator has found there are potentially tens of thousands of badly installed and even unsafe systems on rooftops.
Some experts even believe Australia has become a dumping ground for poor quality solar products.
Liz Hobday takes a look at the big picture, including how effectively, or otherwise, solar is helping Australia meet its clean energy targets.

27 May: ABC: Australia’s obsession with cheap solar is derailing the market, insiders say
7.30 By Liz Hobday and Sybilla Gross
The ANAO found (ONLY?) 1.2 per cent of rooftop solar installations have been inspected by the regulator.
The regulator’s inspections found that about one in six solar installations was “substandard”, and about one in 30 was “unsafe”.
Based on the sample, the audit found there would be hundreds of thousands of substandard installations and tens of thousands of unsafe solar systems across the country…
Wollongong resident Rex Leighton spent $8,000 installing a rooftop solar system in 2015, which he expected would last for at least 25 years.
It only lasted four and a half years…

Mr Fleury was just one of dozens of solar installers 7.30 spoke to who said poor-quality rooftop solar was all too common.
“A large amount of those earlier panels, since I’d say 2008 all the way till 2014, a lot of those panels have come back down off roofs,” he said…
One of the worst-performing panels she had tested from the Australian market was a panel that produced 12 per cent less electricity than its advertised rating…
Dr McCann said some overseas manufacturers were sending poor-quality solar products to Australia, knowing they would not be checked…

Homes destroyed by rooftop solar fires…
The National Audit Office found some of the risks of batteries include electric shock, gas explosion, fire, and chemical exposure…
Renewable energy certificates not cancelled if system fails…

CAPTION: Photo:Steve Attard knows of ***25 fires that were started by problems with rooftop solar in the Melbourne metropolitan area in the past five years
The acting commander of Fire Investigation and Analysis at Melbourne’s Metropolitan Fire Brigade (MFB), Steve Attard, says homes can be destroyed in fires that have been caused by rooftop solar systems.
“People are losing their homes, and a lot of the homes, by the time we get to the scene of the fire, the fire travel has destroyed at least the roof compartment,” he told 7.30.
“We always see the worst-case scenario.”

The national audit of the Renewable Energy Target has revealed that between 21 and 26 per cent of small-scale rooftop solar installations inspected every year since 2011 had been found to have faulty wiring and unsecured panels. Some posed a “severe risk” where wiring was exposed. This required units to be shut down immediately and remediated.

The first was in its 7 pm news when Alan Kohler included the dreaded coal in his table of the performance of some Australian commodities. He did mange to partially avoid it by talking about the price of iron ore as the table disappeared.
Is this double surprise a harbinger of change? Even improvement?

inauthentic “listening” waffle…ending with Adani waffle:

28 May: ABC AM: ‘We should do a lot more listening’: Labor leader Anthony Albanese
        On AM with Sabra Lane
(EXCERPTS TRANSCRIPT) SABRA LANE: You’re starting your listening tour in Queensland. Are you any clearer yet on why three out of four Queenslanders voted for anyone else but Labor with their primary vote?
ANTHONY ALBANESE: Well, look, one of the things that I’ve said is that we have two ears and one mouth and we should do a lot more listening than we do talking at this stage in the cycle, and so, I’m talking to people in Queensland…
I have a great affinity with Queenslanders. I think they’re straight-talking people and so am I. I have mates across the board from Queensland…

SABRA LANE: Okay. On conflict, Adani is an issue that has caused a lot of conflict. Do you think the economics of this project stack up?
ANTHONY ALBANESE: Well, the important point there is, it’s not up to Government to determine that. It is up to markets themselves.
What it is up to Government to do is to give environmental approvals. That’s happened, of course, at the federal level.
At the state level it is being considered, but one of the things that has occurred over a period of time is that the company itself have met a range of — have not met a range of timelines that they’ve put forward.
But we will see what decisions the company makes once the approvals are either made or not made by the Queensland Government.
I do say this — and I have said this before the election, it was reported in the Herald — my view is that the demonstration that went through central Queensland and went into the towns in terms of Claremore in Queensland, and you had essentially people on two sides.
One side, ***people who genuinely cared about the planet*** and thought they were doing the right thing, but on the other side, people who cared about their jobs and cared about the future of their families as well.
And the truth is that that was incredibly provocative and did nothing to advance, in my view, a genuine debate about climate change…

      In The Australian:

“A $10 million feasibility study for a high-efficiency, low-emissions plant at Collinsville has been promised by the Coalition as part of a suite of projects aimed at improving the stability and reliability of the electricity grid”. Graham Lloyd.

As TonyfromOz pointed out switching our coal fired power stations to HELE status would have reduced the emissions from electricity generation by 22% MINIMUM.
Electricity generation is the easy bit for politicians posing about progress but what have 29,900 wind turbines and square kilometres of solar panels done for Germany? Their overall emissions haven’t dropped in 10 years. But they have got higher electricity prices, almost as high as South Australia’s.

AUDIO: 7min15sec: 28 May: ABC Breakfast: French company plans to build Australia’s biggest wind farm
Wind farms all over the world are getting more efficient and generating more power, and they’re mainly doing that by installing taller turbines, with bigger rotating blades.
French renewables company Neoen is proposing to build one of Australia’s biggest wind farms on the remote wilderness coast of western Victoria, together with large-scale battery storage.
The turbines for the $1-billion project will be up to 270 metres high, and in a first for Australia, they’ll operate above an industrial pine plantation.

Statement by a spokesperson for the Victorian Minister for Planning, Richard Wynne
“The Kentbruck Wind Farm is still in the pre-application stage, with nothing lodged to the Department yet. Given the very early stage in the process it would be inappropriate to comment further.”

        Sceptical Sam

        Sure thing.

It’s an industrial scale carbon sink that has a 20 year life cycle and is prone to catastrophic wildfire. It produces pollution in every one of its growth years. Its proponents are able to circumvent EPA regulations on pollution. Much the same as an industrial scale wind farm, really.

“Pine trees are one of the biggest contributors to air pollution. They give off gases that react with airborne chemicals creating tiny, invisible particles that muddy the air. Scientists have shown that particles formed by pine trees are much more dynamic than previously thought.”

Playwright David Finnigan’s satire was cancelled in Australia prior to its first intended theatre run in 2014, but the show has since found other ways of existing, including a concept album and even a self-guided walking tour of Australian Parliament. The play’s inflammatory title became fodder for right-wing ranting in the media…

27 May: UK Telegraph: Does your child have eco-anxiety? Here’s how to tackle it
    by Linda Blair
‘Twelve years left to save the planet’ read one recent headline; ‘1 million species on the brink of extinction’ read another. Little wonder that eco-anxiety – ‘a chronic fear of environmental doom’ – is attracting growing attention, particularly as a problem among younger generations.

Although not yet listed in the mental health manual DSM-5, a number of professional organisations such as the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP), the American Psychological Association (APA), and the Wellcome Trust have written about it. In a 2017 report, the APA calls for an increased focus on the mental health consequences of climate change.
Symptoms of eco-anxiety include anxiety, depressed mood, insomnia, and feelings of loss, fear and helplessness. Symptoms in children may also include separation anxiety and somatisation — signs suggestive of physical illness but without a physical explanation, for example stomach aches, headaches and extreme fatigue…

Many young people today think civilization may not exist when they’re of retirement age. Here are ways to get them to invest for the future.
Some 88% of millennials — a higher percentage than any other age group — accept that climate change is happening, and 69% say it will impact them in their lifetimes. Engulfed in a constant barrage of depressing news stories, many young people are skeptical about saving for an uncertain future…
“I want to hope for the best and plan for a future that is stable and secure, but, when I look at current events and at the world we are predicting, I do not see how things could not be chaotic in 50 years,” (Lori Rodriguez, a 27-year-old communications professional in New York City) says. “The weather systems are already off, and I don’t think it’s hyperbolic to be a little apocalyptic.”…

Millennials are also said to suffer from “eco-anxiety,” according to a 2018 report from the American Psychological Association, with 72% saying their emotional well-being is affected by the inevitability of climate change, compared with just 57% of people over the age of 45…
Climate change may also have direct, and devastating, effects on the finances of young people, an August 2016 study from environmental advocacy organization NextGen Climate found…READ ON

7 May: CNN: Climate anxiety is real, but there’s something you can do about it
    by Jen Christensen
A student in Wendy Petersen Boring’s climate-change-focused class said she woke at 2 a.m. and then cried for two solid hours about the warming ocean.
“This is a computer science major,” Petersen Boring said…
Polls show that many more Americans worry about global warming. There’s no clinical definition, but climate anxiety and grief or solastalgia — “the distress that is produced by environmental change impacting on people while they are directly connected to their home environment” — has become such a concern that the American Psychological Association created a 69-page climate-change guide (LINK) to help mental health care providers…

Even for people who aren’t directly affected by natural disasters, climate change is causing measurable mental distress.
Higher temperatures alone have led to more suicides and increased psychiatric hospitalization and have hurt our sleep, which can also also harm mental health. These problems will get worse as the temperature continues to rise, research shows…

Yet the Trump administration has buried government reports on climate change. Trump pushes for “American energy dominance,” developing initiatives that reward greenhouse gas-producing industries. This lack of political will is compounding some people’s anxiety, experts say…

lengthy, lots of pics…great observations from Scott Alexander, a psychiatrist on the US West Coast:

22 May: SlateStarCodex: The APA Meeting: A Photo-Essay
      by Scott Alexander
The first thing you notice at the American Psychiatric Association meeting is its size. By conservative estimates, a quarter of the psychiatrists in the United States are packed into a single giant San Francisco convention center, more than 15,000 people…

…the third thing you notice at the American Psychiatric Association meeting is that everyone is very, very woke.
Here are some of the most relevant presentations listed in my Guidebook…

      Saturday May 18:
Climate Psychiatry 101: What Every Psychiatrist Should Know
Women’s Health In The US: Disruption And Exclusion In The Time Of Trump ETC…

      Sunday May 20:
What Should The APA Do About Climate Change?…
Working Clinically With Eco-Anxiety In The Age Of Climate Change: What Do We Know And What Can We Do?…

      Monday May 21:
Ecological Grief, Eco-Anxiety, And Transformational Resilience: A Public health Perspective On Addressing Mental Health Impacts Of Climate Change ETC…

Were there really more than twice as many sessions on global warming as on obsessive compulsive disorder?…As best I can count, yes…

I’m reminded of the idea of woke capital, the weird alliance between very rich businesses and progressive signaling. If you want to model the APA, you could do worse than a giant firehose that takes in pharmaceutical company money at one end, and shoots lectures about social justice out the other…

The fifth thing you notice at the American Psychiatric Association meeting is that the CIA has set up a booth.
I was pretty curious about what the CIA wanted from psychiatrists (did they lose the original MKULTRA data? do they need to gather more?), but I was too shy to ask their representative directly. I did take one of their flyers, but it turned out to just be about how woke they were…

      FROM COMMENTS:
      Larry Kestenbaum:
As Scott has pointed out in the past, there are two huge mental-health-related APAs: the American Psychiatric Association and the American Psychological Association.
I’m not a member of either group, but I had a partner who belonged to the latter, and attended several of the annual national meetings. My spouse badge entitled me to attend panels, poster sessions, etc.
Drug company propaganda was less pervasive at the psychologists’ event, but other than that, it appears that the two meetings are extraordinarily similar.
reply: deluks917: Psychologists cannot prescribe drugs in general (as I am sure you are aware). So the lack of ads is not a mystery.

even Rolling Stone is at it:

16 May: Rolling Stone: How the Mental Health Community Is Bracing for the Impact of Climate Change
“Eco-anxiety” and trauma from natural disasters will be on the rise along with sea levels
        By Andrea Marks
When San Francisco broke heat records in 2017, with 106-degree temperatures in September, psychiatrist Robin Cooper didn’t hear until after the fact that one of her patients had been feeling dizzy and feverish. One day, he’d fainted in his poorly ventilated workspace. Emergency room doctors had surmised he’d had a virus. But Cooper warned him it could actually be a drug she’d prescribed him interacting with the extreme heat. Certain antipsychotic medications, often used in treating schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, can impair the body’s ability to cool itself. This is one reason hospitalization rates among schizophrenic patients can spike with the temperature. “I told him, you need to know these medications put you at risk during heat waves,” Cooper says. “He now is armed with that knowledge the next time around.”
With temperatures rising globally, there will be increasingly frequent “next times.”…

Mental health professionals have begun to mobilize against the threat. The American Psychiatric Association (APA) has a half-dozen climate change–related sessions planned for its 2019 annual meeting. The programming is thanks to the efforts of experts like Cooper, an assistant psychiatry professor at University of California, San Francisco, and her colleagues, who organized the Climate Psychiatry Alliance (CPA) in 2017. “We’re all from different areas of psychiatry, but we’re all focused on what can we do to address this,” says community psychiatrist David Pollack, a CPA founding member and professor emeritus for public policy at Oregon Health and Science University. “As we’re talking about planning for the future in mental health issues, we have to be thinking about climate change.”…

Climate anxiety is a relatively recent phenomenon, but the concern is spreading. A Yale survey in December found nearly 70 percent of Americans are “worried” about climate change, 29 percent are “very worried” — up eight percentage points from just six months earlier — and 51 percent said they felt “helpless.”…
At the APA’s meeting later this month, Lewis will co-lead a session that includes mock interviews with sufferers of eco-anxiety, so people can see the issue being talked about in a therapeutic setting…

Words to the effect of “Perth will experience temperatures this week of 26 due to NE winds bringing warmth from the interior. If it was summer then temperatures would be in the forties.”

Given that CO2 content is the same now as in summer, the only reason for higher temperatures in summer is because of the position of the EARTH wrt the SUN!

Scam exposed! Proof that CO2 does not materially affect global warming.

ABC overnight had What The Papers Say. it included talk of “global warming” re this piece:

28 May: SMH: Peter Hannam: ‘Death blow’: Corals, algae don’t acclimatise to more acidic seas
Shell-forming creatures from oysters to types of plankton are increasingly at risk from the changes, which have been called the “evil twin” – along with higher temperatures – of climate change…
A team of scientists exposed four coral and two coralline, or calcifying algal, species to varying ocean acidity levels for a year at the Moorea reef in French Polynesia to test their responses.
They found “completely no change over a year”, said Christopher Cornwall, a researcher based at Victoria University in Wellington, and an author of the paper published in Nature Climate Change on Tuesday.
We expected that over the course of the year they would slowly get acclimatised,” Dr Cornwall said. “In reality they displayed the same responses at the start and the end of the experiment.”…

***Dr Anthony, who was not one of the paper’s authors, said he was “not surprised by these results”, adding it “would have been ***WONDERFUL” if adaptation had happened so fast…

28 May: Hobart Mercury: Canberra shivers through coldest May day in 19 years
        by Ally Foster, news.com.au
Those in Australia’s southeast have entered the second day of freezing conditions, and it looks like the icy conditions are set to stick around for the next few days.
A mass of polar air following behind a cold front blasted parts of NSW, ACT, Victoria and Tasmania yesterday, sending temperatures plummeting.
Yesterday, Canberra residents shivered through their coldest May day since 2000, reaching a maximum of just 9.1C…

Perisher received an extra 20cm of snowfall overnight, bringing its total to 40cm, while Thredbo is at 20cm and counting.
At least 25cm of snow has fallen in Hotham Alpine Resort in Victoria, with 30cm more expected to fall over the coming days.
The Blue Mountains and parts of NSW’s central west also experienced snow, with Orange, Lithgow and Oberon just some of the areas affected…
“This cold weather is being caused by a pressure system to the south of Australia which is bringing through a cold front. Behind that cold front was some polar air from the Antarctic region being brought up over NSW.”
Residents shouldn’t expect a reprieve from the icy blast just yet, as a second cold front moves over the southeast today and tomorrow…

NYT wants you to read this, and it’s being picked up elsewhere. not sure if Steve Bannon spoke to NYT directly for his quotes.

27 May: NYT: Trump Administration Hardens Its Attack on Climate Science
By Coral Davenport and Mark Landler
In the next few months, the White House will complete the rollback of the most significant federal effort to curb greenhouse-gas emissions, initiated during the Obama administration. It will expand its efforts to impose Mr. Trump’s hard-line views on other nations, building on his retreat from the Paris accord and his recent refusal to sign a communiqué to protect the rapidly melting Arctic region unless it was stripped of any references to climate change.

And, in what could be Mr. Trump’s most consequential action yet, his administration will seek to undermine the very science on which climate change policy rests…

In the most recent example, the White House-appointed director of the United States Geological Survey, James Reilly, a former astronaut and petroleum geologist, has ordered that scientific assessments produced by that office use only computer-generated climate models that project the impact of climate change through 2040, rather than through the end of the century, as had been done previously.

Scientists say that would give a misleading picture because the biggest effects of current emissions will be felt after 2040. Models show that the planet will most likely warm at about the same rate through about 2050. From that point until the end of the century, however, the rate of warming differs significantly with an increase or decrease in carbon emissions…

The administration’s prime target has been the National Climate Assessment, produced by an interagency task force roughly every four years since 2000…

Work on the next report, which is expected to be released in 2021 or 2022, has already begun. But from now on, officials said, such worst-case scenario projections will not automatically be included in the National Climate Assessment or in some other scientific reports produced by the government…
In an email, James Hewitt, a spokesman for the Environmental Protection Agency, defended the proposed changes…

However, the goal of political appointees in the Trump administration is not just to change the climate assessment’s methodology, which has broad scientific consensus, but also to question its conclusions by creating a new climate review panel. That effort is led by a 79-year-old physicist who had a respected career at Princeton but has become better known in recent years for attacking the science of man-made climate change and for defending the virtues of carbon dioxide — sometimes to an awkward degree…
Mr. Happer’s proposed panel is backed by John R. Bolton, the president’s national security adviser, who brought Mr. Happer into the N.S.C. after an earlier effort to recruit him during the transition…
Climate scientists are dismissive of Mr. Happer…

But at a White House meeting on May 1, at which the skeptical advisers made their case, Mr. Trump appeared unpersuaded, people familiar with the meeting said. Mr. Happer, they said, is optimistic that the panel will go forward…READ ALL

28 May: SMH: Senate race begins to replace Fifield, Sinodinos
        By David Crowe
Two members of Malcolm Turnbull’s extended family are being named as potential contenders in a race for a NSW seat in the Senate, while Victorian Liberal Sarah Henderson is the favourite for a similar contest in Victoria.

Mr Turnbull’s son-in-law, James Brown, was named by several Liberals on Monday as an option for the key position in the upper house, to be made vacant later this year following the appointment of Arthur Sinodinos as Australia’s next ambassador in Washington.
But Mr Turnbull’s brother-in-law, Michael Hughes, is also being put forward by Liberals as a possible choice because of his long years of service to the party, including as treasurer of its NSW division…

Captain Brown, who is married to Mr Turnbull’s daughter, Daisy, is the president of the NSW RSL and served in the army in Iraq, Afghanistan and the Solomon Islands.
He is an adjunct associate professor at the University of Sydney after working as a research fellow at the Lowy Institute for International Policy and the university’s United States Studies Centre.
Mr Hughes, who is the brother of Mr Turnbull’s wife, Lucy, is a Sydney stockbroker and businessman who has been involved in the Liberal Party since he was a teenager. He, Lucy and their brother Tom jnr are the children of Tom Hughes, who was a federal Liberal MP for nine years, attorney-general in the government of John Gorton, and later a prominent Sydney barrister…

While there was speculation that former army general Jim Molan might also be a candidate, his fate is yet to be determined by the counting of the votes from the May 18 election, in which he was fourth on the Coalition’s Senate ticket.
Senator Molan, whose term expires on June 30 if he is not re-elected, offended some within the Liberal Party by running a “below the line” campaign asking people to give him their votes rather than following the official Coalition ticket…

I’m convinced Thunberg will be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize later this year. however:

Young Swedish climate change activist Greta Thunberg has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize by a group of Norwegian socialist deputies…

the deadline for each year’s nominations is 31 January of the year in question, which is why some questioned how come Obama was nominated less than two weeks after being inaugurated 20 Jan 2009.

there is a loop-hole, it would seem:

The Nobel Prize: Nomination and selection of Peace Prize Laureates
February – Deadline for submission. In order to be considered for the award of the year, nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize shall be sent in to the Norwegian Nobel Committee in Oslo before the 1st day of February the same year…

        Deadline for nominations
Nomination deadline is 31 January at 12 midnight CET. Nominations which do not meet the deadline are normally included in the following year’s assessment.
***Members of the Nobel Committee are entitled to submit their own nominations as late as at the first meeting of the Committee after the expiry of the deadline…

February-March – Short list. The Committee assesses the candidates’ work and prepares a short list…

        Selection process
At the first meeting of the Nobel Committee after the February 1 deadline for nominations, the Committee’s Permanent Secretary presents the list of the year’s candidates.
***The Committee may on that occasion add further names to the list, after which the nomination process is closed, and discussion of the particular candidates begins. In the light of this first review, the Committee draws up the so-called short list – i.e. the list of candidates selected for more thorough consideration. The short list typically contains from twenty to thirty candidates…
        https://www.nobelprize.org/nomination/peace/

time will tell – but I do think where there’s a will, there’s a way, even tho Thunberg was nominated by outsiders, way after this year’s deadline and, therefore, should not be under consideration.

24 May: NYT: The new old age: Older People Are Contributing to Climate Change, and Suffering From It
Growing numbers of seniors are using more energy. They also are most likely to suffer in extreme weather, which has become more common as the planet warms.
    By Paula Span
When it comes to discussing climate change, older people may have one advantage: They have watched it happen…
Older Americans also are significant contributors to climate change. A just-published study has found that residential energy consumption rises as a resident’s age increases (LINK)…
Usage was lowest among young adults, who typically occupy smaller households, said Hossein Estiri, a computational demographer at Harvard Medical School and an author on the paper…

Why do older people use more juice? The study could not provide explanations, but “there might be more need for air-conditioning,” Dr. Estiri speculated. “Or older people may not be able to maintain their homes as well” to conserve energy. “Maybe their appliances are old and less efficient. All of these could contribute.”
The climate change story has plenty of villains; seniors are hardly wrecking the environment on their own. Still, the demographic trends do not bode well…

There’s a common notion that older adults care less about climate change than young adults. But that holds true only for Republicans, a Pew Research Center survey found last year, and may be less a product of age than political affiliation…
Older volunteers would benefit by working to halt climate change, Dr. Pillemer (a gerontologist at Cornell University) said…
(A version of this article appears in print on May 28, 2019, on Page D5 of the New York edition with the headline: Suffering the Consequences of Their Contributions)
The risk of heat stroke, which is potentially fatal, increases because older adults may be less mobile, and thus less able to reach cooler locations in a heat wave. They also may be socially isolated and less able to seek help.
With impaired cognitive function, “you might be less able to judge what to do,” Dr. Kinney (who studies the effects of climate on health at the Boston University School of Public Health) said…READ ALL
