In a win for the Summer Fashionthink Parade, the UK Parliament has declared a Climate Emergency
It’s has all the legal meaning of a Chastity vow, has no scientific definition and was not voted on. It’s purely symbolic — as such its main role is to add social pressure on weak minded M.P’s and be a shot-in-the-arm for green-group fundraising. It’s a PR achievement, a worthy footnote in Marketing 101, but what it isn’t, is democratic, rational or the voice of the people.
This is what you get when you let 16 year olds dictate national policy.
What does it mean? Whatever you want:
What is a climate emergency?
Prof Chris Turney (of the $2.4m Antarctic stuck-ship fame).
While there is no precise definition of what constitutes action to meet such an emergency, the move has been likened to putting the country on a “war footing”, with climate and the environment at the very centre of all government policy, rather than being on the fringe of political decisions.
Nearly half a million Britons died in World War II. So far, man-made climate change has killed no one. The worst storm in British history was three hundred and sixteen years ago. The population is booming. Food is bountiful to the point of being a health hazard. The biggest climate problem Britain faces is the indoor one — whether the poor can afford the kind of safe efficient electric heating that no one had one hundred years ago.
The aim of the Climate Chastity Vow is pure psychology:
The UK Parliament has approved a motion which mandates nothing:
ABC: ” …the declaration on its own does not mandate action on climate“
BBC: “This proposal, which demonstrates the will of the Commons on the issue but does not legally compel the government to act, was approved without a vote.“
The Independent: Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn called for the motion to “set off a wave of action from parliaments and governments around the globe”.
The man who tabled it hopes other governments might do the things his own nation isn’t agreeing to. This makes it kind of like a global chain letter, then?
It appears the aim is to fool people into thinking that action is happening and momentum is building at a time when electricity bills are really the issue and the momentum is in electing right wing parties. The real protests are not the ones obedient school children do but the tens of thousands of grown ups who’ve been protesting by the thousands every week for months.
On twitter this is #ClimateEmergency

This will intrude into everyone’s lives – just wait for the silly ‘climate and saving the planet’ taxes.
There’s even talk of eliminating gas fired central heating boilers – absolute madness.

Surely its just an act of good will and nothing untoward will come of it……hang on…
Agenda 21 [1] is a non-binding action plan of the United Nations with regard to sustainable development.[2] It is a product of the Earth Summit (UN Conference on Environment and Development) held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1992. It is an action agenda for the UN, other multilateral organizations, and individual governments around the world that can be executed at local, national, and global levels.
Looks like a perfectly natural progression of the original plan to destroy western civilisation to me.
320
That 1992 summit set the ‘agenda’ by (the late) M Strong, humanitarian hater, suggested reducing all of us to less than 500 million TOTAL. ‘Humans are bad for the planet’. “We need a transnational disaster” I know.. lets call it “global warming”. Though there was reference to it (CO2 causes warming) in the 80s, that was probably the ‘warm up’.
The rest is history.

Great for killing people with cold……but we knew they hate humanity, so no surprises there……

I have mentioned how the Elite appear to want to push humanity into a vegetarian lifestyle.
And now – making it trendy….just link in climate change… bingo … targetting the 18-30s …. again …
I wonder the 18-30s now will feel when they relaise in their 40s with no power and sick kids due to no heating, how they will kick themsleves….

DiCaprio, Gates on Beyond Meat bandwagon
“The Los Angeles-based company, which counts actor Leonardo DiCaprio and Microsoft Corp founder Bill Gates among its investors, aims to market its meatless burger patties and other products to meat-loving consumers.
“It avoids terms such as vegan or vegetarian and instead displays its products in the meat section of supermarkets.
“Plant-based substitutes for meat have been gaining in popularity as more people shift towards vegan or vegetarian diets, amid growing concerns about health risks from eating meat, animal welfare and the environmental hazards of intensive animal farming.
“What’s convincing people to go vegan?
“Health choices, animal rights, or the environment: 2018 has been called the year veganism goes mainstream.
“Beyond Meat creates substitutes for meat by using ingredients that mimic the composition of animal-based meat, mainly employing pea protein that looks and cooks like beef or chicken.
https://www.abc.net.au/triplej/programs/hack/health-animal-rights-environment-why-are-people-going-vegan/10062522
“Animal rights vs health vs environmental reasons
“The 10 per cent figure above may seem surprising given the popularity of films 2014’s Cowspiracy, which looks at the environmental impact of animal agriculture, its contribution to greenhouse gas emissions, deforestation and excessive water use.
“The statistics it relies on have been criticised, but numerous independent studies have shown a vegan diet uses less water and land than non-vegan diets.

Reality and truth mean nothing to them. They follow the belief that such things are social constructs and can correspond to the real (unknowable) reality only by accident. “Truth” is established by agreement among their “significant others”.
How they can know this is beyond me because their “significant others” are a part of this great unknowable reality. Yet if you dare disagree with their agreement, they work (same contradiction of knowing the unknowable) to make it impossible for you to express your “truth”. They work to destroy you, in self defense, by calling you bad names. This is supposed to destroy your position and make your “truth” false. Apparently to protect themselves from having their “truth” destroyed by your “truth”.
Philosophically, they are in the position of Wiley Coyote having passed the edge of the canyon and is suspended, in thin air, 1000 feet above the bottom. Falling only when he realizes he is standing on nothing but air. It is only their committed belief in their “truth” that enables them to continue their position. Eventually, they will hit bottom. Sadly, having done much damage to one and all while holding their socially constructed “truth” with all their might.
Reality is a bitch who doesn’t give a damn about your “truth”. It is only her truth that is important. Ignore that, and your punishment is immediately delivered without mercy and without delay. You have to work for the rewards.

It is almost time for a new saying to replace “climate change”. It is overused now everywhere. It reminds me of the days when Miss America or Miss World contestants were asked what they most wished for. Invariably the answer was “World peace” said with a beaming smile.

‘globull warming’ -> ‘klimate change’ -> ‘klimate katastrophy’ -> ‘globull emergency’…etc etc..Especially when the (AGW)supporters realize they are loosing.

Not long ago the UN Church of Climatology realised that ‘Global warming’ ™ and ‘Climate change’ ™ no longer had the emotional impact they once had so they brought in the branding experts.

The Church was looking for a term that would replace the tired old ‘climate change’ with something much more emotionally charged. Now it has been decided all the

Time to move to a warmer and more enjoyable climate.

You missed out the low temperatures of around 12 degree c. Funny that last year the equivalent
temperature for this bank holiday weekend saw temperatures of 26 degrees centigrade and that was global warming. At 12 degrees centigrade, all of a sudden it is merely weather.

Can anyone point to the 1°+
climate changeglobal warming ’emergency’ in Finland?“The town of Ii in northern Finland wants to be the world’s first zero-waste community.
They believe the key to successful climate action is education from a very young age.”

From today’s ‘Finnish? Swedish? It all sounds Greek to me!‘ files: those heart-warming photos of the little braided plaited one – she of the home-schøøled ‘No more skøøl until Paris!’ infamy – darling of the new world’s media industrial complex, Saint Greta of Hypocrisy (PBUHer) is always rugged-up in puffer ski-jacket and pants and gloves with scarf and beanie upon head and heavy protective shoes/boots underfoot (unless, of course, she’s soiréeing with the witch and (in)famous inside the warm, safe spaces of Davos or Brussels or Katowice COP). http://www.theartofannihilation.com/the-manufacturing-of-greta-thunberg-for-consent-the-most-inconvenient-truth-capitalism-is-in-danger-of-falling-apart/
Wandered upon this series of articles the other day (long-form journalism / research still lives) written under a Canadian fem-pseudonym. She appears to still believe in the patriarchally-caused CCC crisis trope, yet rips to shreds the whole sustainable green Greta garbage, XR, Blood & Gore, WWF, Bernie, AOC’s GND, Sir ‘Dickie’ Branson, 350.org’s McKibben, solar shyster corporations and offshore investment banks… all which can be summed up under the ‘one’ brand: Al Gore’s Climate Reality Project.
The above link goes to Part 3, of a 6-part series of essays, which starts with a photo of “Malena Ernman: WWF Environmental Hero of the Year, 2017”. Yep, Greta’s mum, blonde Viking goddess arm-in-arm with Greta’s dad. You know she represented Sweden in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2009? Nah, me neither. Apart from the author’s occasional relapse into carbon equals warmth thought, she fully nails the Brave New World of corporate climate con-artists. And I quote: “One could call this a circular death economy. It takes much skill and coordination to ‘herd cats’ – to their own slaughter”. Would appreciate minds greater than mine critiquing one-or-more of above articles.

Sounds good, must investigate.

Quoting Travis T. Jones (#9) “Note: Finland introduced the world’s first carbon tax in 1990.”
Well back in the last “Ice Age (~115Ka – 11.7Ka)”, Finland was covered entirely by the “Scandinavian Ice Sheet”.
The Finns better hope that another “Ice Age” doesn’t re-appear anytime soon – fat good that CT will be to them then – in fact the next LIA (not far off) will have a profound effect on the Finns – snow bound for most of Autumn (fall), Winter & most of Spring – poor sods.

How does the UK Parliament approve anything without a vote? Even in a Politburo there was a vote. Only the Secretary General could approve stuff without a vote. Does the UK still have the Queen?
140
Nothing seems to say how the vote was taken, presumably on the voices without a division.
60
A very good question Curious George. I wondered myself. The UK parliament site didn’t say (as far as I could tell). ABC and BBC said there was no vote, but Sky News said there was, and all past stories before the event said there would be. In the end I went with BBC ABC — figuring that if there was a vote there is no way they would admit through grinding teeth that there was not.

I wonder if the would be as keen to put the presence of an “emergency” to the people as they seem to be for a Brexit revote. If they didnt get the answer they wanted they could keep having referendums until the people learnt the error of their ways.

Its possible that this ‘catastrophe’ declaration was started to distract the populace from the Brexit fiasco, buy May some time try to increase her popularity.
40
Like most things, nothing to do with reality. Something politicians dont grasp.
40
A vital piece of guidance for us Jo, another great piece.
We need to start seeing the reality in western democracy and come to understand that it has been inverted.
Top Down governance is what Watt Tyler fought against and it’s now time to insist, very strongly, that Governance remains within Australia and is not overridden by Auspicious Self Appointed Rulers somewhere else.
http://joannenova.com.au/2019/05/bill-shorten-sells-emissions-cost-like-chubby-people-giving-up-big-macs/#comment-2134211
Sarcasm knows no bounds,
h/t Serge. Pat, Peter Fitzroy. David,
and like you Jo I would also acknowledge the contribution of the third hat tipped.
His contribution has been absolutely outstanding in that at every step he has shown all of the attributes of the new governance that rules from top down.
There’s been no debate or inquiry, no seeking after knowledge and instead a total inability to relate to science.
The disconnect with scientific reality and the style of interference shown here is truly a great example of what Top Down Governance creates in society.
Thank you Jo for recognising That.

Even for you – this is at another level.
you want to deny my freedom of thought – I must adhere to the correct 7 thoughts.
you want to deny my freedom of expression – I must adhere to the 1 way of expression for the 7 thoughts.
It is not necessary for me to accept 100% of any given position, I don’t have to be 100% green, or 100% capitalist, nor do I subscribe to “you are either with me or against me, there is no in between” view. Try to understand that at least. As to assertion about science, what makes you my judge?

STILL waiting for that empirical evidence that shows warming by atmospheric CO2. !
131
Is this counted as empirical evidence?
http://www.drroyspencer.com/wp-content/uploads/UAH_LT_1979_thru_April_2019_v6.jpg
31
NO. !
Nothing to indicate any human cause whatsoever,
Exactly the opposite, in fact.
Came from 3 major El Ninos events 1978/79, 1998 and 2015-17 following a Grand Solar Maximum series of solar cycles in the latter half of last century.
Between those events , no warming at all
So it most certainly IS NOT down to any human CO2 influence
NH is currently about the same as it was in the 1940’s
.. and SH? well who knows! ?
Certainly after BOM’s “interference” with the raw data, that set of fabrications certainly can’t be taken with an credibility.
80
“Between those events , no warming at all”
NO WARMING from 1980-1997
NO WARMING from 2001-2015
CO2 cannot cause El Ninos.
So NONE of the warming is from atmospheric CO2.
70
So, as a thought experiment, what would you consider evidence of human influence?
25
Pregnancy?
60
Temperatures should fall below the Spencer line and stay there, otherwise it could be argued that human induced CO2 is causing global warming.
Temperatures should begin to fall next year with a strong La Nina, but to stay cool we’ll need a rerun of 1958-63.
https://notrickszone.com/2019/04/29/the-northern-hemisphere-cooled-by-0-6c-from-1958-63-that-cooling-has-now-vanished/
40
Well that is intriguing, el gordo. I would cite the dryland greening as one effect, for temp I would be happy to see if what you suggest plays out
41
I’d consider some actual hard evidence that’s provable and accepted as proof that man is wot dunnit , not that much to ask for really is it ?
60
The 1997/98 El-Nino and the 2015 event both had temperature anomalies of 2.3degree C, but the latter wasn’t followed by La-Nina. This is unusual, but probably not unique.
One thing is certain, another decade on this plateau would make it a climate trend.
Robert there is no evidence, which is why the ‘precautionary principle’ is such a useful tool.
11
“what would you consider evidence of human influence”
You are the one that “believes” it exists
YOU PRESENT IT. !
A slight warming due to a couple of El Ninos is NOT indicative of any human influence.. period.
Only a brain-washed anti-science twit would consider it to be.
21
” it could be argued that human induced CO2 is causing global warming.”
NO, not without any actual EVIDENCE.
Arguments of that sort have to have causal EVIDENCE.. there is NONE.
21
“I would cite the dryland greening as one effect,”
Yes we KNOW that increased atmospheric CO2 helps the plant biosphere.
You have presented ZERO EVIDENCE that it affect climate in any way whatsoever.
You are EMPTY.
31
The “‘precautionary principle’” is for those who have ZERO EVIDENCE, and want to chase a FANTASY.
Using it is a crutch is a total admission that you have ABSOLUTELY NO EVIDENCE.
31
Frankly I would like them to pin down so-called climate sensitivity to something like 1degree Celsius. Not science as we know it.
00
Andy the Southern Ocean cooled in 2005 and has remained in that state ever since. They have been searching for a reason and came up with ‘ancient water’.
Generally the oceans are warming because of El Nino, which presumably increases atmospheric temperatures. CO2 doesn’t appear to be part of the equation.
https://bobtisdale.files.wordpress.com/2019/01/figure-1-3.png
21
“CO2 doesn’t appear to be part of the equation. “
CORRECT.
There is no evidence that it has any affect on the climate at all.

80
Net zero, the interesting thing is that Australia and Great Britain are around parity for total emissions, but the Brits have a lower per capita, and certainly lower land area. Like Germany’s push to phase out coal, this seems to be an accounting trick, by not counting external power generation in the Net Zero argument.
311
Why on earth do you WANT to lower CO2 emissions , Fitz? Seems pretty stupid to me?
30
Tt would, to you. Before we terraform the planet, should we have an idea of what might happen, and what other consequences there might be? Neither you or I can answer that.
26
We are NOT terraforming the planet.
That is just another of your childish anti-science FANTASIES.
20
It would be terraforming if there is an effect, for example, human induced CO2 greens the planet.
00
That’s not terraforming, that’s releasing natural carbon back into the atmosphere where it belongs.
20

This reminds me of the adding of “Catastrophic” to the fire hazard warnings. Sure enough, within days of adding it, one was declared. Unprecedented! Mind you, there wasn’t much sign of a catastrophe. Nor was there any practical difference in fire preparations. All it did was raise the profile of various firefighting bureaucrats and, perhaps, stoked alarm amongst some of the people.

el gordo:
Surely published early last month, about the first.
But I like that bit about hybrid aeroplanes partially powered by batteries. Worthy of Jonathon Swift.
90
The first time I saw an article on anything about CO2 causing warming was in a New Scientist in the late 80s. At that time I didnt take allot of notice, more curious, although I was already a disbeliever in the THEN scam about CFCs destroying the ozone layer. The scam that preceded this one.
110
yes – the replacement (HFC) is now said to be several thousand times worse than CO2.
Lucky for duPont this was only noticed as the IP on HFCs is about to expire.
I’m sure duPont can come up with another refrigerant gas though and patent it too.
80
Just go back to CFC, which is the bast refigerant by far.
80
Well, the replacement for R-12 was 134a.
The replacement for 134a is now HFO 1234yf.
http://www2.dupont.com/Refrigerants/en_US/assets/downloads/SmartAutoAC/MAC_SAE_HFO_1234yf.pdf
So, any/all R-12 range equipment and applications went from USD $1/lb to USD $7/lb to now USD $100/lb (USD 2.5/kg, 15/kg, 220/kg) in only 20 years. That’s 2000% inflation or 100% inflation per year for refrigerant costs over the last 20 years. Roughly.
And the Ozone Hole is still ignoring everyone, every claim and every attempt. But a lot of people are getting wealthy.
Massive transfer of wealth for what benefit? Virtue signalling?
Fluorochemistry has a limit of what is possible. We’ve reached that end. There are no magic gases left to find.
CFCs, HFCs, HFOs. There are few or no fluorine based structures left. Fluoro carbons/ethers, etc are unique because as the fluorine count increases, the flammability, toxicity, carcinogenicity, reactivity, corrosivity, etc all decrease. But only for certain structures. Out of the 900 +/- possible structures, most are toxic, flammable, carcinogenic, corrosive, immiscible, cardiac sensitizers, etc.
Pretty soon, you have nothing left to use. Maybe block ice from a horse drawn wagon. But not anything like anyone currently living is accustomed to.
Just about everything else has a really crappy efficiency. Air, CO2, etc. None of them can touch a CFC/HFC efficiency.
Does anyone remember WHY the CFCs were such a breakthrough? Sulfur Dioxide and Anhydrous Ammonia killed people. That’s why.
As an aside, the Internet Data Centers currently consume some 5% of total world energy usage and 20% buy 2025. Think about it. Internet is “killing you” if the climate freaks are correct, and if they aren’t, then the energy cost of the Internet is larger than all the solar and wind energy production in the entire world. Hate this resource, but the embedded links are good and the overall article is, cough, decent.

Interesting, I hadnt seen the cost of running all the computers and servers AND the large undersea cable interfaces which are the ‘internet’ nevermind satellites, they dont count, they are solar.. BUT the uplinks must be included, all those watts!
All to run of ‘unreliables’ of course..oops bang, damn no net..

Also what I dont like is that article they concentrate on power consumption predictions vs emissions targets, ok but. The elephant in the room, DATA SURVEILLANCE on a MASSIVE scale. See how many new data capture servers there are.

Excellent!
The UK Parliament should now ban all flying and eating of meat by MPs. All their other travel should be by electric car or public transport.
Also Bill Shorten should promise to require the same of his Government MPs and replace all Comcars with Nissan Leafs. Our leaders should lead by example, for the planet!

Well as long as we all understand that these “declarations” are only for our own good. I see the good Dr. Dick, of Greens leadership noteriety, is suggesting that if the greens get any power at the next election they will look at mandating what and how much of any ingredient can be used in manufactured foods. They WILL reduce salt and sugar in the diet of the populace by regulation.
The examples were things like Vegemite and Tim Tams. Easy. Then when these changes have had the desired effect of reducing obesity and heart disease, well they will then regulate how much meat can be consumed over any time period they nominate. Once again, only for our own good. So as the population gets healthier than ever and life spans increase as air polution is reduced, and food type and quantity are controlled, we will all clearly live at lot longer. But wait ! that can’t be any good for the planet, I know, lets regulate how long individuals can live for. We will tell you whats good for you.

Let me try to improve on what Chris Turney wrote:
“While there is no precise definition of what constitutes action to meet such

Lately I’ve become suspicious of much climate talk, including some Grand Solar Min talk. Even Suspicious Observers, the interesting and popular astronomy/geo/climate site with its emphasis on some impending 12,000 year “event” (where we really should cooperate with authorities) has got me suspecting.
Here’s what I’ve been thinking. Based on countless findings by those engaged in the physical sciences over a long period, our cosy interglacial has to end soon. Possibly short term, certainly medium term. This is not challenged by anyone, it is simply not discussed. So we are not looking at a particular event or cataclysm so much as an uneven decline toward glaciation, accompanied by “events”. There may be all kinds of terrestrial and solar changes, but the pattern of Quaternary climate means much more glacial than interglacial time. That’s the ration. We might get yet another LIA followed by another warming. We might be sweet for a few hundred years. But the ration is short now.
The recovery from the last glaciation was pretty quick, with a big difference between conditions, say, 14,000 years ago and those 13,000 years ago. But even this “recovery” time was pretty glacial, as was the interruption of the Younger Dryas just around 12,000 years ago. Our present interglacial has been something of a plateau as regards temps, but that is not extraordinary. And it would not be extraordinary for the whole thing to end about now. The Neolithic and Bronze and Iron and Machine Ages have all been crammed into the last few thousand years…but soon the conditions which enabled all that will be over. So what do we do?
This isn’t about another Solar Minimum affecting climate for a few hundred years. It’s about yet another full-Monty ice age like you have to have according to the science which preceded the present scare and which nobody has ever rebutted (except to say in a vague, throw-away, gotcha way that our “emissions” are holding back this full-Monty).
I have no idea what we do for the next hundred thousand years, but I’d certainly like to discuss it in the context of actual natural history rather than CO2 faddism. Could it be that the climate change industry is about control and plunder but also about changing the most indelicate of subjects?
130
moso, The solar cycles are declining towards a minimum (see spaceweather). Yes Suspicious Observers are electric universe supporters, of which Im not, (they have a mass problem). The electromagnetic coupling to geo events has been referred to in published papers. Therefore there is some merit in solar proton flux from CME affecting weather and earthquake events, looking likely. My guess is a LIA type event within decade or 2.
80
Who has the mass problem? The current solar model dictates the maximum mass of a star can only produce iron and no heavier elements because the pressure to go heyong iron would shut down the fusion process…….and then along came Betelgeuse. Another exampled of settled science being blown apart but let’s not talk about that shall we.

The problem with Pier’s website is that it’s a cluttered mess.
I take the view that if he really wants to get his message across, he needs to put the facts right at the top of his website, using bullet points for all the evidence that contradicts the dangerous man-made global warming scary stories.
He also makes too many statements declaring that ‘it’s all rubbish’ – but without putting references or sources next to these comments, rather like the warmists, in fact, which is real shame.
He really must back up his statements with sources and further reading to get people interested.

MSM sees this story as a chance to bring down the “populist” coalition Italian Govt. not interested in providing details:
3 May: Reuters: In blow to League, Italy’s PM urges dismissal of junior minister
by Francesco Guarascio and Angelo Amante
ROME – Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said on Thursday he would propose at the next cabinet meeting the dismissal of a junior minister who has been linked to a graft scandal, in what could be seen as a blow to the coalition partner League.
Armando Siri, a transport ministry undersecretary and economic adviser to League chief Matteo Salvini, was placed under investigation by Italian prosecutors last month for allegedly accepting bribes to promote the interests of renewable energy firms…
Later on Thursday, 5-Star leader Luigi Di Maio told a TV show he hoped that Siri’s dismissal would not lead to the collapse of the government. He said the cabinet decision could be taken on May 8 or 9.
The bickering between the coalition partners has prompted speculation that the government might collapse soon after the EU election

By John Follain
Armando Siri, who is undersecretary at the Infrastructure and Transportation Ministry, is suspected of receiving a 30,000-euro ($34,000) bribe for seeking to insert a measure in the government’s economic outlook that favored businessmen in the renewable energy industry, news agency Ansa reported without saying where it got the information. The amendment wasn’t approved, it said…
Ansa said the investigation began in the Sicilian capital of Palermo and focused on a businessman who allegedly had links to the Mafia. Siri is suspected of receiving a bribe from a university professor who drafted the League’s energy program, but wasn’t aware of ties between the two men, Ansa said…

4 Apr 2013: Guardian: Assets worth €1.3bn seized from Italian businessman ‘with mafia links’
Vito Nicastri, known as the ‘king of wind’ for his renewable energy interests, loses companies, property, cars and boats
by Lizzy Davies in Rome
Anti-mafia investigators in Italy have made their largest confiscation of assets to date: €1.3bn (£1.1bn) worth of property, cash and alternative energy companies owned by a man known as the “king of wind”…
Among the assets were 43 companies, 98 properties, 66 bank accounts, credit cards, investment funds, cars and boats. Most were located in Sicily and in Calabria, the southern region of Italy that is home to the ‘Ndrangheta criminal organisation, but the investigation also reached northern Lombardy and Rome.
Investigators said Nicastri, who made his name as an alternative energy entrepreneur, had “high-level” contacts in the mafia and invested money made from criminal activities. “This is a sector in which money can easily be laundered,” Arturo de Felice, head of Italy’s anti-mafia agency, told SkyTG24…
Police said Nicastri had close ties to Matteo Messina Denaro, a Cosa Nostra kingpin who has been on the run since the early 1990s…

Current Totals for China (end of 2018)
Coal fired power – 70.39%
Hydro – 17.62%
Wind – 5.23%
Nuclear – 4.21%
Solar – 2.54%
Most of the generated power (Australia’s total multiplied by 35) goes to Industry because only 14% goes to the Residential Sector, while in Australia, almost 30% goes to the residential Sector, (and here in Oz, we have more gas in homes, so that accounts for the less electricity usage than in other Countries) and 38% goes to that residential sector in the U.S. (similar percentage to other Developed Countries) so, if they want to bring their population up to our level of power consumption in people’s homes, they have a long way to go. There’s a huge number of homes in China with no power at all. As power plants go in, the ‘side benefit’ is the electrification of residences.

Someone has to manufacture all those good we all like to have. 😉

The millions of villages dont use mush power as allot are remote, some will probably be using solar. The households live simply, cheaply but well, good food.
Yes China’s major power is industry. That 17% hydro will be made up allot from the 3 gorges dam. (guess)
50
Tony how much of the Hydro 17% is generated by the Three Gorges Dams on the Yang Tse river ?
That is a huge power generator.
But also in an earthquake prone region of China.
It is a wonder of the planet.
But I suspect
A short lived one
Which will be destroyed by the next “Big One”
In China
60
Please excuse my tongue being planted firmly into my cheek here.
Yes, that Three Gorges hydro is a humungously, monstrously huge part of China’s total hydro power generation.
The power alone generated by the Three Gorges Hydro is 45% of Australia’s total generated power from every source, and the whole of China’s hydro generates 6.2 times all Australia’s generated power.
But that Three Gorges Hydro generates just umm, ….. 7% of China’s total Hydro power, so in fact not all that much in the big scheme of all China’s hydro.
China has far and away the most advanced hydro of anywhere on the Planet. In much the same manner as they got the ‘Biggies’ in to help them with coal fired power at the start of their USC program, they did the same with hydro, on the proviso that they could then do it all for themselves in the future, and now they lead the World in both of those forms of power generation.
Some of their hydro work is the most amazing technological things you could ever hope to see.
As to Three Gorges, back at the dawn of that project, I did a four part Series at my home site, and that was in 2008, eleven years ago now. Luckily, and you never even know why you do these things, I took an image from Google Earth of the site. I went back and had another look recently, and it’s totally unrecognisable, what has been constructed at and around that site, huge cities, expanding outwards. It’s amazing, and accentuates that meme, ‘build it and they’ll come’
If it wasn’t for China Hydro, the World total for ALL renewables would look decidedly a very much smaller percentage.
For those of you who wish to read that Series, the link is below, and that’s the permanent link for just these four Posts on The Three Gorges Project. (plus one other which has piqued my interest, and I’m still watching that)

Likewise, Tony, have saved the first few to read on the next rainy day. Spent 3 days/nights on a boat going down the Yangtze / Chang Jiang in 1986, pre-dam days, from Chongqing to Nanjing. Weird I know: all my friends went overseas to London or NY, or Melbourne, while I headed for Tibet (the most foreign, faraway place for a young NZer brought up on atlases and NatGeos) and ended up spending way too long zig-zagging around China before I finally headed for the hills and Lhasa and
nirvanabeyond. The river level was low, during their summer, and on numerous occasions we ran aground on sandbanks. I was fascinated not only by the crew and locals’ tenacity at solving those minor problems, but also with the surrounding geography and its verticalness – straight up! – and how people lived clinging to the sides of the gorge(s). And as I was the only gweilo / foreigner onboard, EVERYONE was fascinated by me… a novelty which soon wore off. But now the whole shebang is under water, buried beneath a monster lake from Wuhan upstream to beyond Chongqing. I’m sure their engineers factored in those massive earthquakes and floods the area regularly suffers from: that’s one big swimming pool of water with nowhere to go except towards Shanghai…

Greg,
That sounds too adventurous.
10
Greg, have you come across a book by an early explorer of the region; The River of Golden Sand by (Sir) William Gill?
10
Annie, I have now, thanks to you (downloaded all 496 pages of it!) and did a little more reading up on him. What a dude! “In 1876, William Gill decided to explore China”, as you do. “Jinsha/Yangtze means ‘golden sand’ and Gill named his book on the expedition The River of Golden Sand. Crossing the Jinsha, the party followed its valley or the ridge between it and the upper Mekong valley for 24 days to Dali City”.
In Kunming on my way to the Stone Forest (amazing limestone formation) I saw a map with a town called Dali on it (only 2 or 3 mountain ranges away) and decided I had to go there (loved Salvadore Dali’s paintings from a young age) so I did. Two days later after the most horrific & spectacular bus ride (takes 4 hours now on the new expressway) I arrived in the most quaint, ancient, lakeside town surrounded by huge misty peaks. Wandering the streets the next day, I smelled a familiar sulphurous aroma and walked into a natural hot spring sauna/massage place. Oh bliss! I stayed for a few more days, regularly visiting the pools, happy to pay the few yuan to get boiled (it was chilly outside with snow on the tops).
“Up to that point [Dali City] Gill had surveyed the entire route and measured the altitude with aneroid barometers and a hypsometer”. Don’t tell the BoM or they’ll mal-adjust the numbers. After returning to England, “Early in 1878, Gill was sent with a friend to the Balkans, the pair posing as tourists in an effort to gather intelligence about the situation in Romania and Bulgaria. The occupying Russians quickly saw through the cover story and sent Gill and his companion home”. Surveyor and spook for The Great Game… Istanbul, Tehran, Moscow, Tripoli, Alexandria, Suez… shame about his ignominiuos end in the Sinai Desert. Some things never change.
20
It was a shame he ended that way Greg. He was murdered, I believe, by being thrown down the mountainside in the Ataka Mts.in Egypt. These were visible to me when I lived as a child in the Suez Garrison back in 1954…I didn’t know of Gill’s existence then. I have an original copy of the book which has now been reissued and is available on Amazon. There seems to be extra info in the new edition which I saw when I visited my sister in England.
His father, Major Robert Gill of the Indian Army, was the discoverer of the Ajanta Caves in India and made paintings copying them. The paintings were displayed in the Crystal Palace and lost when that burned down.
10
If you are ever in London and can visit St Paul’s Cathedral, there is a memorial to him and his companions who died together. Capt. Gill was in the Royal Engineers.
10
Major Gill’s paintings were copies of paintings in the Caves. I gather that the originals are fading and damaged because of too many visitors…there is lots online about it all.
There was also a florid Bollywood movie made about Maj. Gill and his various amours; very inaccurate I’m informed! I’ve not seen it.
10
May have passed close by the Ataka mountain range… on my 2nd attempt at travelling around the planet (1989) I spent a month in Egypt with the obligatory hike up Jebel Musa / Mt Sinai (complete with a frozen overnight stay on the summit huddled with a bunch of other keen sunrise enthusiasts). A Dutch couple there offered me a ride in their car back to Cairo, so after a few days recuperating in Dhahab by the sea, we drove north-westward across the peninsula to Suez (Ataka Mtns inland of there?) then to the ancient River of d’Nile in Cairo. A few weeks later I was in London and, yes, I did visit St Paul’s briefly on my way to the National Gallery art museum, but as I’d never heard of William Gill back then, I walked on by.
The authors who’d travelled through Tibet and inspired me as a young fella were Francis Younghusband (British Army turned hippy 1890/1900s), Nicholas Roerich (Russian painter/mystic 1920s), Heinrich Harrer (Austrian mountaineer 1940s) and representing the adventurous women explorers, Alexandra David-Néel (French-Belgian mystic/traveller 1910/20/30/40s) who disguised herself as a Tibetan beggar on her numerous illegal pilgrimages across the Roof of the World.
When I arrived in Lhasa (autumn 1986, just after Deng Xiaoping ‘opened up’ China & Tibet to individual travellers) the warmest trousers I had were a pair of burgundy coloured baggy pants I’d bought in Bali. Thankfully, and purely coincidentally, they were the same burgundy red as monks’ robes and wherever I went I was welcomed like a long-lost brother; then again, the long hair and beard probably made me look like a crazy mountain ascetic who’d just wandered over the Himãlaya from India or somewhere. Beautiful mountain people: tough, cheeky, good-humoured, reverential – shame about the politricks.

all over the MSM:
1 May: Eureka Alert press release: Scientists see fingerprint of warming climate on droughts going back to 1900
Continued drying expected in many regions
source: Earth Institute at Columbia University
In an unusual new study, scientists say they have detected the fingerprint of human-driven global warming on patterns of drought and moisture across the world as far back as 1900…
In general, scientists agree that as global warming progresses, many now dry regions will become drier, and wet ones will become wetter…
The new study combines computer models with long-term observations to suggest that systemic changes in what scientists call the hydroclimate are already underway across the world, and have been for some time…
“We asked, does the real world look like what the models tell us to expect?” said study coauthor Benjamin Cook of the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies and Columbia University’s Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory. “The answer is yes. The big thing we learned is that climate change started affecting global patterns of drought in the early 20th century. We expect this pattern to keep emerging as climate change continues.”
Lead author Kate Marvel, a climate modeler at Goddard and Columbia University, said, “It’s mind boggling. There is a really clear signal of the effects of human greenhouse gases on the hydroclimate.”…
According to an earlier Lamont-Doherty study, a 2006-2010 drought leading up to the disastrous Syrian civil war was probably made more likely by warming climate, and the drought may have helped create the social and economic conditions that sparked the initial rebellion.
Some areas are expected to get wetter, but this may not necessarily be good…
The study was coauthored also by Céline Bonfils and Paul Durack of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, and A. Park Williams of Lamont-Doherty.

no coal, no gas, say the Greens:
3 May: River1467: AAP: Qld sends Adani back to drawing board
Adani’s controversial Queensland coal mine has been dealt another blow after the state government rejected its plan to protect an endangered bird…
A department spokeswoman told The Australian the plan cannot be approved in its current form because “it fails to meet Adani’s environmental authority”.
The department said Adani could submit a new or revised plan, but the timing of that is up to the company.
Adani has accused the state Labor government of constantly shifting the goal posts for its Galilee Basin project.
The Indian miner said Thursday’s meeting did nothing to clarify what was required to resolve the impasse.
“Unfortunately, we left the meeting still no clearer on the process or timing to finalise these plans,” an Adani spokeswoman told the paper…
Federal Resources Minister Matt Canavan accused Labor of siding with the Greens.
“We’ve seen Bob Brown and his convoy come up here this week, we’ve seen the Labor Party do a preference deal with the Greens and surprise, surprise, the Labor Party once again caved in to the demands of the Greens and the likes of Bob Brown,” he told ABC radio.
“Other mines have been approved by the state Labor government which involves the black-throated finch without this palaver. The reason they’re singling out this mine is because the Greens have asked them to do it.”
Greens leader Richard Di Natale said the Adani mine wasn’t about politics, but climate change and treasures like the Great Barrier Reef.
He said the Coalition and federal Labor were not serious about moving away from coal and gas.
“They receive massive donations from the coal, oil and gas lobby, millions of dollars over recent years. And, as a result, no-one will go to the root cause of the problem,” he told ABC TV.

2 May: UK Telegraph: Three cheers for the Climate Committee, but there is no ‘cost’ to zero emissions
By Ambrose Evans-Pritchard
There is no macro-economic cost to a climate target with zero emissions. To claim that we cannot afford to wean ourselves off fossil fuels by 2050 is to rely on primitive accounting fallacies. The switch to a post-fossil economy is more likely to be an accelerant to GDP growth, akin to the successive upheavals of steam power, electricity and digital technology, each with a ripening phase of 30 years or so.
The Bank of England argues that green investment is a net economic benefit.
***It is a way to soak up the glut of excess savings in the global financial system and put idle capital to work.
The bond market is evidence that the world economy is badly out of alignment. Some $10 trillion (£8 trillion) of debt is trading at negative yields…

2 May: UK Independent: Business groups herald ‘new dawn for climate change action’ as landmark report published
by Harry Cockburn
The CCC report explains the need for considerable changes to many ways British people live if we are to meet the target.
These include major changes to how we generate power, heat our homes, what food we eat and farming practices.
Millions of homes will have to make the switch to low-carbon heating, people will need to eat less beef, lamb and dairy, and dispose of waste more efficiently, the report states…
We also need to move towards electric vehicles, but less road traffic, with more people walking, cycling and using public transport…
“We’re looking at having as fulfilled, as different, as various a life as we have today, if not more, but to do it in a way in which we take responsibility for the future by respecting the planet which gives us life and by having different attitude to the usage of resources,” said committee chairman Lord Deben.
Despite necessarily calling for major changes within our society, the report’s aims have been well received in many sectors including energy and business bodies as well as environmental and farming groups…
The widespread enthusiasm for the target comes amid a huge swell in interest in climate change spurred-on by school strikers inspired by Greta Thunberg, the Extinction Rebellion protests, Sir David Attenborough’s BBC documentary on climate change, and cross party parliamentary support for measures to tackle some of the problems.
The report also lands days after the Bank of England governor Mark Carney warned banks they cannot ignore the “catastrophic” effects of climate change and must be at the heart of tackling the problem…
Moving to a low-carbon economy will require a “massive reallocation of capital”, he and Bank of France governor François Villeroy de Galhau said in an article for The Guardian.
“If some companies and industries fail to adjust to this new world, they will fail to exist,” they wrote.
The Confederation of British Industry (CBI) which represents 190,000 businesses across the country has called the CCC report a “new dawn for climate change action” and is demanding a “step change in government policy” to meet the target. It also cited recent protests as indicative of the “sense of urgency” required to tackle the crisis…
Also among those calling on the government to put policy in place to help smooth the path towards a greener future is the Institutional Investors Group on Climate Change (IIGCC), which represents over 170 investor members with over £19 trillion in assets under management. “To claim that we cannot afford to wean ourselves off fossil fuels by 2050 is to rely on primitive accounting fallacies. ” Utter rubbish, its due to real world that no CO2 emissions = total industrial collapse. = NO Oil = NO oil products = NO coal products = NO reliable energy sources = NO civilization. Welcome to the 18th Century.

2 May: CNBC: Credit Suisse says global trends will boost these sectors
by Weizhen Tan
One key investment focus of millennials — a group that is “increasingly influencing” businesses — is clean energy, and the bank recommends electricity companies that have already started changing their business models to become renewable energy operators.
In a report issued at the Credit Suisse Global Supertrends Conference (LINK) last week, the bank’s Head of Economics and Research Nannette Hechler, and Daniel Rupli, head of single security research, went into “the most significant societal changes” that could result in tangible investment opportunities…
Meanwhile, the “Millennials tide” is just beginning, according to the bank, which referred to how people under the age of 30 are “increasingly influencing businesses and their values.” That means that areas such as clean energy could be an important investment focus, it said…
Clean energy
Public pressure on politicians to rely on renewable energy instead of fossil fuels will continue to intensify as climate activism takes off, according to the report.
Therefore, government policy is expected to become “more ambitious” in setting near- and medium-term renewable energy targets, Credit Suisse said.
It says, as a result, this will have a “profound impact” on utility companies. It recommends electricity companies that have already started changing their business models to become renewable energy operators…
In particular, the bank recommends operators that own large assets that produce electricity from solar and wind, over equipment and technology suppliers for renewable energy projects.
Those assets, according to the report, can “produce reliable and long-term revenue streams without re-occurring input costs.”
“In Europe, investors still seem to underestimate the positive earnings impact that will come from implementing cheaper wind and solar energy into their generation mix,” the report said, adding that the full future growth potential of any renewable energy infrastructure has not yet been priced in…

3 May: Guardian: Adani’s Carmichael mine is unlikely to go ahead, and most people know it
by John Quiggin
(John Quiggin is a professor of economics at the University of Queensland)
When the project was launched in 2010, the prospects for thermal coal looked rosy. Today it is hopelessly uneconomic
There’s general agreement that Adani’s proposed Carmichael mine in the Galilee Basin will be a big issue in the current election campaign. If that were to be true anywhere, it would be in the seat of Herbert, based on Townsville, which hosts Adani’s regional headquarters.
Yet a recent Newspoll conducted in Herbert estimates the two-party preferred vote unchanged from the knife-edge result of 50-50 in 2016, which saw Labor’s Cathy O’Toole returned with a margin of 37 votes. What is happening here?
The answer is that, whatever happens on 18 May, the Carmichael mine is unlikely to go ahead, and most people know this…
The current price of thermal coal (about US$90/tonne for top quality Newcastle coal) is well below the level that would make Carmichael viable (over US$110/tonne), and it is only likely to decline in future. Adani is hanging on, in part to avoid recognising on its books the loss of the $3bn or so spent to acquire the mine and in part in the hope of extracting compensation from the Australian public…
The Nationals and the Tony Abbott faction of the Liberal party have continued, or even amplified, their rejection of both science and economics. But urban Liberals in marginal seats have changed their tune. A group of ‘“modern Liberals” has emerged, pushing for action on climate change. Amusingly, this group is led by Tim Wilson, formerly a leading climate denialist with the Institute of Public Affairs…
The last remaining source of large scale funding for coal on a global scale is China. At the Belt and Road summit held over the weekend, Chinese premier Xi Jinping stated that the Belt and Road program ***must be green and sustainable…

***as Carbon Brief pointed out in an article I posted on a previous thread, coal is still a major investment for China.
2 May: EconomicTimesIndia: CIL plans 530 mn tonnes of fuel for power plants in FY20
Last year, the public-sector miner had sold 488 million tonnes of the fuel to India’s coal-fired power producers.
By Debjoy Sengupta
Kolkata: Coal India, a near monopoly supplier to the country’s thermal power plants, would raise dispatches about 9% to 530 million tonnes this fiscal year, an enhanced target analysts say should help soften power prices and substitute the solid fuel’s imports…
“Additional supplies are needed as power demand appears to be rebounding,” said Kameswara Rao, partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers. “Peak demand has repeatedly hit new highs in the last few months, and the consumer base has expanded due to rural electrification. Additional supplies will help substitute imports and soften spot power prices.”
Last year, power generators from Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, firms that normally depend on domestic fuel, imported 1.4 times more coal…

3 May: Stockhead: Who said coal has no future? Aussie small cap coal stocks are up 35pc in 12 months
by Nick Sundich
With the future of coal being a hot discussion point in the federal election, Stockhead has analysed the performance of small cap coal stocks with operations in Australia. Collectively they have gained 20 per cent in 2019 and 35 per cent in the last 12 months.
Here’s a table of ASX small cap coal stocks with operations in Australia (excluding suspended stocks)…CHART
At a glance it would seem either the reports of Australian coal’s decline have been greatly exaggerated, or no one has told investors. However, some of these companies have individual reasons for increasing…
The rise of coal stocks has come in spite of coal being in the news every day, with the proposed Adani mine being a controversial topic for both opponents and advocates.
Whatever your views on coal, there is no shortage of it to go round. According to the BP Statistical Review, Australia has 145 billion tonnes of coal, which is the world’s third largest reserves. Total global reserves are sufficient to meet 134 years of global production…
While there have been concerns about China limiting Australian coal imports, China are hardly the only client. South Korea took nearly 44 million tonnes of Australian coal in 2018. Japan have also been a major buyer…
Coal miners will be watching the upcoming election with particular interest as both pro and anti coal groups call on voters to use the ballot box to tell politicians what they think of mining.
Nevertheless, the Adani mine (which has caused coal to become such a prominent issue in the election), will likely go ahead as both major parties don’t oppose it.

From an email
” Brothel Sues Local Church Over Lightning Strike In NV
What an interesting turn of events in Pahrump, Nevada.
Diamond D’s brothel began construction on an expansion of their building to increase their ever-growing business.
In response, the local Baptist Church started a campaign to block the business from expanding — with morning, afternoon, and evening prayer sessions at their church.
Work on Diamond D’s progressed right up until the week before the grand re-opening when lightning struck the whorehouse and burned it to the ground!
After the brothel burned to the ground by the lightning strike, the church folks were rather smug in their outlook, bragging about “the power of prayer.”
But late last week ‘Big Jugs’ Jill Diamond, the owner/madam, sued the church, the preacher and the entire congregation on the grounds that the church…… ” was ultimately responsible for the demise of her building and her business…either through direct or indirect divine actions or means.”
In its reply to the court, the church vehemently and vociferously denied any and all responsibility or any connection to the building’s demise.
The crusty old judge read through the plaintiff’s complaint and the defendant’s reply, and at the opening hearing he commented, ” I don’t know how the hell I’m going to decide this case, but it appears from the paperwork, that we now have a whorehouse owner who staunchly believes in the power of prayer. And an entire church congregation that thinks it’s all bullshit .”

It is both inspiring and depressing to realise what the real world thinks of the entire renewables industry and by extension, Global Warming(tm).
Like many people here my Day Job is technology related. As a result of this we occasionally get guest speakers who come in and attempt to enlighten us on the future of our industry.
Short summary – keyword ‘space’ teamed with a desire to convert ‘Innovation’ into a solid workable industry.
Casual Mocking – Solar panels
Otherwise not mentioned – renewables
That is the big takeaway. The media, the Latte Drinkers and the Nordic Nightmares of the world talk about forcing industry into a Renewable Future and plan 8 to 10 minutes ahead. Industry talks about how to set up a GPS style equivalent system for the moon and want to know where we can be in 20 years.

By pollution if your referring to CO2 we are just not pumping enough of it out to affect much of anything unless you count greening the desert .

Poor Fitz, FANTASISING yet again.. you are still stuck in La-la-land.
Increased atmospheric CO2 is NOT POLLUTION and will have absolutely zero adverse effects on your health.

Implementing solid, reliable, dispatchable electricity has had a MASSIVE benefit to human health around the world, Fitz.
You are in your backward little FANTASY green agenda la-la-land yet again, child.
Time to grow out of it.

I think the UK should rejoice over this one. They could have announced the opposite or is it converse? They would have had MPs with no clothes on right in Parliament keeping their vow. At least this way they stay dressed and there are no unwanted consequences of the most tragic kind imaginable.
Never would I have expected behavior as juvenile as this. But they exceed my expectations every time.

It is amazing how many normally sane columnists have fallen for this rubbish. I wonder ho many of them have any idea what the Second Law of Thermodynamics says?

My take on this is that Corbyn believes this will help him get the ‘yoof’ vote in the next general election and so allow him to create a ‘New Venezuela’ out of the UK. They tried with student fees but then had to admit they wouldn’t wipe their debts out. The problem with the ‘yoof’ is that to vote in the UK you actually have to do something, mainly go to a place and use a pencil. Without an app they are totally lost so only vote in low numbers. And in the English local elections yesterday that exclude the leftie liberal cities, Labour has had a bad kicking over their Brexit failure suggesting that any future election will not result in single party government.
