In the new post-CO2 world, corn and soy may become weeds, but squid may take over the oceans:
Dr Blake Spady, from the ARC Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies (Coral CoE) at James Cook University (JCU), led the study. He said squid live on the edge of their environmental oxygen limitations due to their energy-taxing swimming technique. They were expected to fare badly with more carbon dioxide (CO2) in the water, which makes it more acidic.
No academic could have guessed that squid would have evolved ways to control their own blood pH:
“Their blood is highly sensitive to changes in acidity, so we expected that future ocean acidification would negatively affect their aerobic performance,” said Dr Spady.
Atmospheric CO2 concentrations have increased from 280 parts per million (ppm) before the industrial revolution to more than 400 ppm today. Scientists project atmospheric CO2 — and by extension CO2 in the oceans — may exceed 900 ppm by the end of this century unless current CO2 emissions are curtailed.
To researchers at safe-space-universities life is full of surprises:
But when the team tested two-toned pygmy squid and bigfin reef squid at JCU’s research aquarium, subjecting them to CO2 levels projected for the end of the century, they received a surprise.
“We found that these two species of tropical squid are unaffected in their aerobic performance and recovery after exhaustive exercise by the highest projected end-of-century CO2 levels,” said Dr Spady.
But unpaid bloggers who do a search with the words “squid evolution” find that while their ancestors knocked around since the Cambrian 500 million years ago, the ones today have had at least 60 million years of wild climate change to practice adapting. Though our knowledge is hampered somewhat by the tendency of boneless jelly-creatures to disintegrate. Even so, it turns out squid are hyper adaptable.
Throw out the genetics rule book! Squid edit their own RNA:
Octopus And Squid Evolution Is Officially Weirder Than We Could Have Ever Imagined
Signe Dean, Nature, March 2019
… it turns out that they and their cephalopod brethren evolve differently from nearly every other organism on the planet.
In a surprising twist, in April 2017 scientists discovered that octopuses, along with some squid and cuttlefish species, routinely edit their RNA (ribonucleic acid) sequences to adapt to their environment.
“The consensus among folks who study such things is Mother Nature gave RNA editing a try, found it wanting, and largely abandoned it,” Anna Vlasits reported for Wired.
But it looks like cephalopods didn’t get the memo. In 2015, researchers discovered that the common squid has edited more than 60 percent of RNA in its nervous system. Those edits essentially changed its brain physiology, presumably to adapt to various temperature conditions in the ocean.
He said it may be an even greater boost for the squid as some of their predators and prey have been shown to lose performance under predicted climate change scenarios.
“We think that squid have a high capacity to adapt to environmental changes due to their short lifespans, fast growth rates, large populations, and high rate of population increase,” said Dr Spady.
The only thing researchers can say for sure after all those grants:
“The thing that is emerging with most certainty is that it’s going to be a very different world,” he said.
Jo’s prediction is everyone will just eat calamari. Especially sperm whales.
Check this out. Squid live everywhere from pole to pole, from shallow to deep. But look who’s coming to dinner according to the FAO Squid, Marine Resource Fact Sheet?
Estimates of global squid consumption by higher predators, especially sperm whales suggest that they consume a greater mass of squid than the total world catch of all marine species combined (Voss, 1973; Clarke, 1983).
If I read that correctly (and I’m dubious)– Sperm whales eat more squid than humans do of all fish, oysters, prawns, crabs and farmed fish, everything globally?
I had to check. Total human fisheries annual catch is 150 million tons. Sperm whales weigh up to 50 tons each and eat up to 900 kg a day. So if there are 400,000 of them (and nobody really knows) that’s 360,000 tons of squid for dinner per day, or around 130 million tons a year. Oh! Touch and go. It may not be true today (though it might be if there are more Sperm whales) but it was true when those papers were published and annual human catches were only 50 million tons a year. wow.
Holy Calamari. Sperm whales are going to love climate change. So are squid.
Burn oil and save the whales.

I am always surprised by what journalists and some scientist find surprising in the natural world. These ignoramus apparently are so untutored in the natural history of this world.
Hey journo, this planet has been here a long time, and all the flora and fauna now on it are the direct descendants of those that have survive all previous extinction events.
240
Tom, that may be a fact but to those who want control of things, facts do not get their due consideration. Acknowledgement of facts leaves no room for the individual to be important. Facts do not bow to anyone.
To some of us humans, everything must bow to them. If some of these so called journalists, not to mention scientists were to take a good hard look at what you’re talking about they would have to acknowledge their complete insignificance in this universe.
It’s apparently not easy to look at yourself in the mirror and say, “Reflection, you’re insignificant.” But for all of us it’s true nevertheless.
130
Well said Roy.
50
‘900ppm CO2, acidification’ this bit gets me as warmer oceans release CO2, so warming means more CO2 absorbed? NOT. Most CO2 as stated many times before on here is IN the oceans. I dont buy that one about any acidification.
Aside, so they alter their RNA? Is this a new discovery? I believe that DNA is modified by the environment.
{ note: spell checker doesnt like word acidification..maybe its google censored }
90
Not to mention that it ignores the effect buffering would have to moderating pH change, but worst of all it totally ignores the scale of the carbonate involved.
It’s like claiming the Sun will get hotter if you detonate a 1MT thermonuclear in its atmosphere – there’s a slight scale impediment involved in detecting a difference in total energy release, let alone detecting a transient to T.
Atmospheric CO2 will produce no significant change to the neutralization of any tendency to acidity (for which there is of course no such thing). The whole thing is a fantasy to begin with so why are dopey failed academics and their misguided ‘students’ wasting everyone’s time and money still talking around in circles about pet JCU urban campus legends?
60
I am with you on that one. Temperature increase and CO2 “absorption” by our oceans are, I believe contrary concepts, and this is where the untutored journos (and non-physics scientists) run foul of reality. (And all you well qualified physicists on this site, feel free to correct the following if I am wrong).
If the oceans cool, they will dissolve more CO2 from the air, even if the CO2 level does not increase.
If CO2 levels rise and the ocean temperatures stay the same then some additional CO2 will be absorbed until a balance is reached.\
If ocean temperatures rise and CO2 levels rise it is likely that CO2 will be released, not dissolved, which, in fact, may partly be the reason why we are seeing rising CO2 levels in the atmosphere now.
This last point is counterintuitive to the uneducated who believe – more CO2 in the atmosphere then there must be more CO2 in the oceans. And then, don’t talk about buffering! That is a concept that no journalist has any idea about!
70
With regard to the spellchecker: I won’t rule out that they might censor something. But if the recent history I’ve been through with the Google spellchecker is any indication of the situation, I would say it’s more likely to be someone’s incompetence.
When I first started using the Chrome browser the spelling checker was as close to 100% as you could get. In fact I’ll go so far as to say they must have been doing very good context analysis to be able to hand me the one perfect correction almost without fail.
Then they started “fixing” it and it hasn’t been the same since. Where it could ounce figure out what I meant by something like “inally”, they could no longer give me finally as the correct word. And worse, the nature of the problems would change It was as if they were experimenting on the customer, a no-no in the software business.
It has settled down now but still not up to the old standard I found so easy to get used to.
If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
50
Given how slowly atmospheric levels of CO₂ are increasing; they would be hard pressed for the atmosphere to reach 500 ppm by the end of the century.
Then there is the problem that warming ocean waters hold less dissolved CO₂, not more.
In other words, these alleged researchers just love torturing animals so they can blame the torture results on “climate change” or whatever the term du jour is.

Chris never quite knew what it was all about.
And Joseph? Joseph was so unworldly he thought babies came from cabbages.
Thank goodness for the three wise men. They got it sorted.
51
?
30
That is the surprise!
30
To be pedantic about it, a squid is a type of cuttlefish. Although it is true that not all cuttlefish are considered squid. Not sure the difference means all that much.
See: https://www.differencebetween.com/difference-between-cuttlefish-and-vs-squid/
50
To be even more pedantic, squids, cuttlefish, octopuses and nautilids are all cephalopods.
Nautilids have an external shell.
Cuttlefish have a shell-like internal “cuttlebone”.
Squid have a clear internal “pen”.
Octopuses only have one hard part, their beaks.
80
Octopuses are disadvantaged!!
Standby for a (expensive) Government scheme to remedy that and give all deserving octopuses a hard bit. It won’t be as expensive as limiting CO2 but just as effective. Send money now and avoid the rush.

They are surprised? The real world did not behave as they imagined. Hasn’t that been the way since the beginning? The real world does what it does because it is what it is. It doesn’t give as much rotten fig for what we imagine it is.
“Experts” are always surprised that what is turns out to be other than what they expected. It is not the real world that is wrong, it is the so called Experts that were wrong. Even after 10,000 years of the “experts” being wrong, they still don’t learn. Why then do we believe anything they say?
The story behind the story is that imagination might be good at creating stories but is is no way to create a real world. The real world is already there. It does not need to be recreated out of bottomless and endless well of ignorance and stupidity.
One only needs to watch, learn, and understand what it is and why it works as it does. Any other approach is a futile and error prone exercise in stupidity. Man spent the majority of its existence on earth learning how to learn such things. It’s called the scientific method and it is vastly more successful than all of the fantasy and magical thinking since the beginning of time. Even when the results are wrong, it has a way of discovering that fact. Not so for imagination and magical thinking.
Yet, many people pretend they are scientists. They demand and get huge sums of wealth that they cannot and did not produce to practice their ignorance and stupidity. Then try to force the rest of us to accept their fantasies and magical thinking: it is “the way things are because 97% of us agree that the science is settled.”
I don’t and won’t accept it until I understand the science and verify its correctness for myself. Consider this: the self selected “Authorities” have always been wrong and will be wrong forever more – even when they are accidentally correct. Truth is discovered and not dictated. It took hominids millions of years to discover that fact. Yet, we are rapidly going back to the fools gold era of ignorance and magical thinking.
I object!

They are easily caught- mainly at night on prawn jigs which have an array of fine barbless hooks. They are attracted to light and can move forward or backward quickly. As kids we used to have squid fights by pointing newly captured one’s and having them squirt ink thereby ruining our clothes. You cannot get that stuff off I’m telling you. Looking into those large eyes leaves no doubt to their sentience.

“They were expected to fare badly with more carbon dioxide (CO2) in the water, which makes it more acidic.”
Excuse me but as the temperature rises CO2 becomes LESS soluble in water.
80
Yes, but as the partial pressure of CO2 rises in the air, more of it enters the ocean.
70
Wow !…
Hang on jo, …
…doesnt that argue against the theory that increasing atmospheric CO2 levels are caused by increasing temperatures forcing more CO2 out of the oceans ?
..Or is that a false rebutal of the man made CO2 claim ?
60
It is a chemical/physical equilibrium reaction in which net free energy (aka. enthalpy) drives the system to is minimum net free energy state. It’s complicated in that an externally induced change in the system (partial pressure of CO2, temperature, or dissolved solutes in the ocean) will drive the system to a new equilibrium state. The factors that can change will change to make it so. Thereby consuming a requisite amount of the system’s initial increase in net free energy. There is no one control knob.
Exactly the same principle can be applied to the so called greenhouse effect. Which, by the way is almost pure BS because it does not consider 10^100 factors (more or less). It too does not have just one control knob. One thing changes, many other things change in response. Unless you have a detailed knowledge of the level of each factor and its equilibrium coefficient, you cannot begin to get the level of responses right. Many times you can’t even get the direction of many of the responses right.
The bottom line is that you cannot ignore context and get away with it.

A recent article at WUWT by Alan McRae found excellent correlation between the change in CO2 (dCO2/dT) and the UAH lower troposphere temperature (UAH).https://wattsupwiththat.com/2019/06/15/co2-global-warming-climate-and-energy-2/
That is the same point made by Professor Murry Salby a few years ago, which resulted in his sacking by the Macquarie University.
Greenhouse Theory says that Global Temperature is a function of atmospheric CO2 (absolute levels), yet the correlation for that is weak.
The close correlation between the change in CO2 and the temperature is strong evidence (in my view) that ocean surface temperature drives Co2 levels and not the other way around.
140
Not just the oceans, Peter C
As once frozen regions warm slightly, the first activity is the release of CO2 for decay, termites, bacteria etc.
If the permanently frozen line drifts slightly north (in NH), that opens up huge areas of biological activity. (Not so much in the SH, because that is mainly ocean, hence slight warming moves the CO2 ocean balance line southward)

However,
I do like to think that humans have had at least some hand in increasing the level of atmospheric CO2.
It has possibly saved the world’s biosphere from its cycle of near destruction at each successive ice age.
Vostok shows CO2 levels dropped dangerously low for carbon-based life’s survival during those periods. (if those levels can be trusted,)
50
I dont trust any absolute level quoted. Most come from dubious stations even with some reliable levels CO2 varies hugely across the globe. The CO2 sat data shows this. Can be measured by the emission spectrum from satellites.
Im in the very well in the slaying camp.
I would guess that Alan McRae’s correlation is due to temp controlling CO2.
70
AndyG55 and theRealUniverse
Yes indeed. Diffusion effects of CO2 through the ice come to mind. Compare the Vostok CO2 levels with the plant stomata proxy data and there is a huge discrepancy in CO2 variation. Do we accurately ‘know’ what historical CO2 levels were? IMO not without quite large error bars.

Another poison pill “study”. The stunt here consists of taking the acid oceans and anthro warming as a given while speculating about squidmaggedon. Get it? Don’t ask the mug if he wants to buy the used car, ask him which colour he prefers. Always be closing.
We’re lucky we weren’t treated to the impact of squid overpopulation on Kampot and Kerala pepper growing. Maybe that’ll be for their next publish-then-perish twaddlefest.
By the way, the Coca Cola Company wants to know how you get warm water to absorb CO2. They’re thinking hot fizzy drinks will be just the thing for winter. Just need to change all the fundamentals of chemistry and get the CO2 running the other way. Shouldn’t be a prob.
200
Simple. Repackage Coca Cola in a brightly coloured container and get the BBC and the ABC to sprout the benefits of the new “climate saving” drink to their dwindling audience of gullibles. They can’t tell the difference between hot and cold.
A bit of green dye or the word Kombucha should make it even more profitable.

There is a whole body of information that the left of politics, including the US Democrats are actively causing disaster to create panic.
It’s not just Global Warming, but stopping people from putting out fires, as in Australia. Consider Trump’s new forest regulations which are uniformly praised as reducing the risk and damage from forest fires from sensible clearing, reducing ground cover and all the things we know in Australia work so well.
Also the millions on the border, encouraged by the Democrats in the US and the Greens and UN everywhere. They openly want a disaster so they can blame it on the Trump administration, which is why they are so wild that Trump has negotiated a deal not only with Mexico but also Guatemala so that people who want to come to America have to wait outside. This is not the total disaster the Democrats so want.
So the left of politics have gone past claiming all natural disasters are Climate Change, Global Warming and now that they are Trump’s fault. Iran, Egypt, Russia, everyone is being used to push this narrative as Trump being the problem when it looks like John Kerry approved Russia’s invasion of the Crimea and has been the one encouraging Iran to cause trouble and duck what nuclear regulations exist. At what point does Trump call the CIA to arrest Kerry? Or are Kerry, Obama, Hillary Clinton, Comey, Loretta Lynch all protected by their FBI?
So it’s not about squid and whales and species extinction and storms. It’s about power, the power of the left to bring down the curtain if they do not get what they want and what they want is power.
240
Besides, it was the discovery of fractioning of crude oil which really saved all the whales, the discovery of coke from coal which saved all the forests of Europe. There is never any gratitude for the cleanest, most efficient, cost free energy on the planet, fossil fuel. So we use all this energy to manufacture steel windmills made with coal based electricity and coke based steel and take the planet back to medieval times. Why? It’s clearly not about saving the whales. Why did Al Gore and James Hansen really invent Global Warming?

Emma Johnston, Marine Ecologist and TV host; David Karoly, Leader of the Earth Systems and Climate Change Hub, CSIRO;
Kirsten Banks, Astrophysicist and Science Communicator;
and Martin Van Kranendonk, Astrobiologist and Geologist.
Discuss the Questions
Here are the questions our panel faced this week. You can discuss their answers on the Q&A Facebook Page.
MASS EXTINCTION
Bill Bowman: It is reported that in terms of preserving the native plants and animals, Australia has the worst extinction rate in the world. What are we in Australia doing that gives us such a dubious distinction? And does such a large degree of loss of biodiversity actually matter?
GREEN HOUSE
Kurt Niebling submitted a video question: Hi, I have some difficulty explaining the CO2 effect to some of my friends who don’t believe in man-made CO2 global climate change. I was wondering if you could explain the science behind how CO2 acts as a valve to allow heat from the sun in, but also traps heat in to create the global warming effect?
CLIMATE & ALAN JONES
Craig Roberts asked via Skype: I saw the radio commentator Alan Jones on TV recently say that, “0.04% of the world’s atmosphere is CO2, 3% of that human beings create around the world and of that 1.3% is created by Australians.” Is that correct and if it is true, is human activity really making a difference?
SCIENTISTS/ADVOCATES
Lily van Eeden: We need good science communicators like yourselves, but is there a blurry zone where scientists become seen as advocates, accused of having a vested interest in the outcomes of their research? …ETC

17 Jun: news.com.au: ‘Alan Jones is wrong’: Radio commentator slammed over climate change remarks on Q&A science panel
Shock jock Alan Jones copped a brutal shutdown on tonight’s Q&A over a single digit he infamously quoted to make a point…
The radio shock jock was slammed by a panel of science experts for downplaying human impact on climate change, after he said we only contribute three per cent to greenhouse gas emissions during his own Q&A appearance last month.
“I saw the radio commentator Alan Jones on TV recently, and he said that 0.04 per cent of the world’s atmosphere is CO2,” the questioner said. “‘Three per cent of that human beings create around the world, and of that, 1.3 per cent is created by Australians’. Is that correct, and if so, is human activity really making a difference?”
VIDEO: 4min35sec
Professor David Karoly, an Australian atmospheric scientist based at CSIRO, bluntly responded: “Not everything Jones says is factually accurate.”
Prof Karoly said that, while it’s correct that 0.04 per cent of the world’s atmosphere is carbon dioxide, Jones’ statistics around humans causing climate change — and the role Australians specifically play — is completely false.
“I am a climate scientist, and Alan Jones is wrong. The reason he’s wrong is because we know that yes, the greenhouse gas concentration in the atmosphere is 400 parts per million … and that corresponds to about 0.04 per cent.
“All his other numbers were wrong. We know that carbon dioxide concentration 100 years ago was about 280 parts per million, or 0.028 per cent, but it’s grown 120 parts per million — or about 40 per cent — and that 40 per cent increase is due to human activity. We know that for absolute certain.”
In other words, Prof Karoly was saying we’ve technically increased greenhouse gases by 40 per cent, not the three per cent figure Jones used.
The scientist also slammed the radio host for implying that Australians contribute a negligible amount to global warming.
“Australians have contributed about 1.5 per cent. Now that sounds like a small amount, but Australia only makes up 0.3 per cent of the population, and we’re contributing 1.5 per cent roughly of greenhouse gases,” said Prof Karoly. “So is it fair that 0.3 per cent of the global population has contributed 1.5 per cent? We’ve contributed much more than our fair share.”
Astrobiologist and geologist Martin Van Kranendonk questioned why Jones was commenting on climate science in the first place…
Particle physicist Brian Cox said people think the climate is overly “simple”, which is a big part of the problem. “But actually, the climate is extremely complicated. These models are very, very complicated and constantly evolving.
“I think many people assume you can just work out what the climate’s going to do, like it’s common sense. But it’s actually a very complex system.”

How can a “scientist” make such “absolute certain” statements based on zero actual data ??
…”that 40% increase is due to human activity
Karoly really blew his credibility !
220
Karoly never had much credibility to start with
An advocate/activist, not a scientist.
And he is the one that is totally wrong.
There is no possibility that humans have caused 100% of the highly beneficial increase in atmospheric CO2. He is saying that the oceans haven’t warmed, and the biosphere has not expanded as frozen land areas warmed naturally.
He is manifestly WRONG !!
230
Well Andy, you are right, “no possibility that humans have caused 100% of the highly beneficial increase in atmospheric CO2”, because there is none.
217
Massive benefits of increased atmospheric CO2, P.
You know that.. so stop your childish attempts at trolling.
You have yet to produce any empirical science that shows increased atmospheric CO2 does anything but promote enhanced plant growth
You are EMPTY, and destined to stay that way.
151
But we saw yesterday details of an experiment that showed a couple of plant species, corn and soy, that benefit from increased CO2 and heat. And such an experiment could be repeated for other plants to determine whether they also benefit from increased CO2 and heat.
90
We ae not directing CO2 to just a few plant species, the increase will affect all organisms including pathogens (both plant and animal). Not only that – some plants like ferns will have a better time of it, just like they did in the Carboniferous. It is stupid to focus on one or two plants. It should also be noted that site selection (in that case northern temperate) is not representative of most of the world
112
So, ZERO EVIDENCE again, hey PF.
Just mindless supposition, zero content. !
MASSIVE benefits for ALL plant life, because CO2 is what FEEDS all plant life.
Thriving.!
100
Maptram, there are a HUGE number of CO2 experiments showing just how much GAIN and BENEFIT there is from increased CO2.

Jones is to science as Trump is to modesty , I get my science from the CSIRO.
I’m also shocked that Jo, a biologist, is so thrilled that thousands of species are going to snuff it but we’ll be up to our armpits in corn, soy and squid !.
27
You are taking this too seriously.
Creatures are going extinct all over the planet, its the way it has always been since the beginning. Nothing to do with carbon dioxide, acidification is a furphy.
60
Then where did it come from – oceans are increasing in CO2 – so it’s not from there
110
You seem to be specialising in “gibberish” nowadays, PF.
70
An estimated 3 million sub sea tectonic vents and volcanoes Peter
All pouring out CO2 !
80
Bill – those volcanoes have always released CO2 – it does not explain the increase to 400 PPM
27
Gradual warming out of the coldest period in 10,000 years does, though PF.
Except it.. you have nothing but empty suppositions, ZERO evidence.
And in accepting that fact, stop you mindless trolling.

Yeah … but … what about the ice cores?
We need to disprove the veracity of Law Dome, find a couple of alternative proxies and convince the world that CO2 was this high during the MWP and RWP.
Stomata as a good proxy and there are bound to be others. We need a reliable CO2 graph which takes us back to the Roman Warm Period.

Stomata versus ice cores.

30
Are those changes from the same plant species? the link, nor the berkeley uni page, do not make that case. It could equally be that different plant species dominate at different levels of C02. Interestingly, in your much revered CO2Science, the old enemy Michael Mann looks at a single species of conifer (which predate the flowering plants) and does find a correlation. Read it here
28
Dichotomy is the key word.
David Middleton (guest post wuwt) explains the situation.
‘Stomata are microscopic pores found in leaves and the stem epidermis of plants. They are used for gas exchange. The stomatal density in some C3 plants will vary inversely with the concentration of atmospheric CO2. Stomatal density can be empirically tested and calibrated to CO2 changes over the last 60 years in living plants. The advantage to the stomatal data is that the relationship of the Stomatal Index and atmospheric CO2 can be empirically demonstrated…’
51
Yes, but I’ve never seen a report where flowering plants (c3 and c4) are able to change the numbers of stomata at a species level. Stomatal numbers vary between species a lot, so if the number of stomata is higher in, for example, daisies, then at periods of higher C02, you would expect that daisies would gain a competitive advantage. I’m not disputing the relationship between CO2 and Stomata,, just the purported model which says that individual species of flowering plants have the ability to respond to the environment in that way.
As I pointed out it appears that for non-flowering plants (pines as an example) there can be a change in stomata number within a species.
25
Yeah, its obviously a huge field for scientific exploration, not my strength.
I have little faith in ice cores because the CO2 signal evaporates, so any ideas on other proxies besides stomata and ice cores?
20
“but I’ve never seen a report where flowering plants (c3 and c4) are able to change the numbers of stomata at a species level. “
Admission of base level ignorance.. Ok, I think we can all agree with that.
Plant species DO adjust their stomata density in response to atmospheric CO2.
Just like humans adjust to breathing at high altitude.
Anyone who actually studied any biology would know that.
40
Mickey Mann doesn’t have a clue about plant dendrochronology.
Yes, plants growth responds to atmospheric CO2, not so much to temperature.
Hence making Mickey Mann’s baseless conjecture look like the fantasy they are.
“for whereas the primary trend of the Mann and Jones temperature data over the first 1100 years of their 1200-year record was decidedly downward, the concomitant primary trend of the new CO2 data was upward. ”
OOPs, PF flops again, provides more proof that CO2 does not drive temperature.
90
I was saying that he (Mann) was supporting EG’s point. If you had understood the paper in CO2Science you would be saying the same thing
14
Looking at the stomata CO2 graph its plain to see that ice cores are dodgy and in a couple of hundred years from now this 21st century spike will have disappeared at Law Dome.
Also the CO2 spike as Europe entered the cool dark age is from the RWP high point in temperatures.
30
“If you had understood the paper”
Poor PF, wants to put his twisted anti-science interpretation onto everything.
Read the words, PF, and try to at least understand basic English..
You have proven , yet again, that basic comprehension is not in your nature.
“for whereas the primary trend of the Mann and Jones temperature data over the first 1100 years of their 1200-year record was decidedly downward, the concomitant primary trend of the new CO2 data was upward. ”

Pop stars like Lil Dicky and Grimes are using their music and their huge followings to gain vital coverage of climate change. This rise in social media-driven activism shows that a tipping point has been reached in popular culture
By Lilian Anekwe
In 2019 there’s arguably no bigger global issue than climate change, and there are signs that this is becoming the new cause for today’s pop stars and cultural icons. Prime-time TV shows like the BBC documentary Climate Change – The facts now compete for digital attention with celebrity-packed climate change songs like Earth by rapper Lil Dicky. Canadian singer Grimes is about to release an album themed on the Anthropocene that aims to “make climate change fun”.
Google Trends data shows that more people are searching for “climate change” today than at any time since 2009, the year that the United Nations brought 110 world leaders together at an unprecedented Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen. 17 Jun: Guardian: The urgency of climate crisis needed robust new language to describe it
by Paul Chadwick (Guardian’s readers’ editor)
Changes to how the Guardian writes about climate announced by Katharine Viner prompted a discussion with readers.
Initial reader response was positive to the Guardian’s recent changes to the way it will refer to climate. “This is an epic struggle of ideas, crucial to our future,” wrote one aye-sayer…
For each change (in bold below) I asked Viner for her reasons, which follow here in italics. She began by reiterating that “none of the old terms is banned. If in a particular circumstance the original term is clearly more appropriate, then it should be used. But the preference is for the new terms.”…
Q: Use climate science denier or climate denier instead of climate sceptic
A: Very few experts are, in good faith, truly sceptical of climate science, or of the necessity for strong climate action. Those arguing against it are denying the overwhelming evidence that the climate crisis exists…
Readers took the discussion further, and I put some of their suggestions (bold) to Viner for her responses (italics)…READ ON

grist for the FakeNewsMSM mill:
17 Jun: Grist: Is it time to retire ‘climate change’ for ‘climate crisis’?
By Kate Yoder
The phrase “climate change” doesn’t cut it anymore, according to a growing group of media organizations.
The reasoning? Climate change and global warming are too neutral, too worn-out, and too nice-sounding to describe the crisis facing the planet…
After the Guardian publicly announced last month that it would drop “climate change” for the terms “climate emergency, crisis, or breakdown,” other publications followed suit. The Spanish news agency EFE stated that it would use the preferred phrase “climate crisis” (or crisis climática.) Then Noticias Telemundo, the top Spanish-language news provider in the United States, announced it would start using “climate emergency.” Suddenly it seemed these terms were popping up everywhere. In CNN headlines, on TED Radio Hour — heck, “climate crisis” is even part of the name of a new House committee.
“The use of clear and accurate language in covering critical subjects such as the climate emergency is not merely an option for journalists; it is their duty,” said Luis Fernández, Telemundo’s executive vice president of network news, in a press release. “The scientific community and linguistics experts agree that the world is facing a ‘climate emergency.’”
“When there’s a number of unrelated people having the same idea at the same time, I think that’s a signal for change,” said Allison Fisher, outreach director at Public Citizen, a progressive advocacy group.
A viral tweet by Greta Thunberg, a 16-year-old Swedish activist, helped jumpstart the climate terminology conversation early last month…
Earlier this month, a campaign led by Public Citizen sent a letter to the presidents and CEOs of ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC, MSNBC, and CNN demanding that their networks and newsrooms “call the climate crisis transforming the Earth exactly what it is: a climate crisis.”
The letter was signed by the Sierra Club, the Sunrise Movement, Greenpeace, and other major environmental and progressive organizations…
Only 50 out of more than 1,400 (TV) news segments about our overheating planet mentioned either phrase last year. But that’s changing: The organizations counted 150 mentions in just the four months in 2019, triple the number from all of last year…

The claim “may exceed 900 ppm” is NONSENSE.
I was going to make a similar comment but decided I would read through, thinking someone else would.
If humans are the cause of that extra 2-3 ppm (not natural processes), getting to 600 is questionable. So it seems.
I don’t doubt that natural events can bump the ppm up faster. What? I’ve not a clue.

With some 98% of CO2 already absorbed in the oceans, a slight rise in atmospheric CO2, even without the massive buffering of huge carbonate deposits, would have negligible effect on ocean pH levels.

17 Jun: PhysicsWorld: Farmers adapting for ‘weather variability’ not climate change
People working in agriculture often don’t link weather extremes and crop losses to climate change, according to recent studies…
“Weather variability perceptions, not climate change belief, have the strongest correlation to predicting farm advisors’ perceptions of future farmer needs,” says Meredith Niles from the University of Vermont, US. “In short, language matters and how we talk about these issues is important to consider.”
Nile and colleagues analysed historical crop loss data across the United States and compared it with surveys of farm advisors carried out by the University of Vermont and the United States Department of Agriculture…
Writing in Environmental Research Letters (LINK) (ERL), Niles and colleagues suggest that farmers and their advisors are more likely to be influenced by weather variability because it is more observable and less politicized than climate change, and experienced at a personal level…
Another study that surveyed beef and grain producers in Alberta, Canada, showed that farmers were rapidly adopting agricultural practices that had climate mitigation benefits (LINK), but not because they believed in anthropogenic climate change. Instead the questions revealed that farmers embraced adaptations because of the expected economic benefits, the anticipated improvements in soil quality and improvements in biodiversity…
The take-home message from both studies seems to be that farmers might not believe in anthropogenic climate change but are astute observers of the weather and pragmatic about the need to adapt and look to the future.

17 Jun: Buzzfeed: The UK Is Set To Host The UN’s Flagship Climate Change Summit, With Italy On The Brink Of Dropping Its Bid
A formal announcement of a partnership agreement between the UK and Italy — the other leading contender to host COP26 — is expected this week.
by Alberto Nardelli
The UK is in prime position to host the United Nations’ flagship climate change summit — COP26 — next year, with Italy set to withdraw its candidacy.
Under the terms of a partnership agreement negotiated by the two countries, Italy would hold a number of meetings to take place before COP26 gets underway in November 2020. It would also help to organise the main event under the UK’s presidency, a British diplomat told BuzzFeed News.
Once final details have been ironed out, a formal announcement of the agreement is expected at the ten-day Bonn Climate Change Conference in Germany, which begins today…
Another diplomatic source involved in the process said that foreign secretary Jeremy Hunt had personally intervened with his Italian counterpart to secure an agreement…
Any deal between Italy and the UK is likely to be welcomed by climate experts and European governments.
Italy’s bid to host the climate change summit had raised concerns (LINK “Italy’s Climate Change–Skeptic Government Wants To Host The UN’s Flagship Climate Change Conference”). The nationalist Lega party, the junior partner in Italy’s governing coalition, has a sketchy record on the environment, while there were worries that the Italian government wouldn’t have the ability and capacity to coordinate the massive diplomatic effort and united global front required to pull off a successful summit.
Next year’s meeting is viewed as critical to setting ambitious long-term goals and concrete action plans for the next three decades…
…Italian officials were banking on EU governments backing its bid over that of a departing member state…
***Although an agreement with Italy makes the UK runaway favourites to host next year’s summit, it is not yet 100% guaranteed that it will. Turkey has also expressed an interest in staging the event, but its bid is seen as unlikely to succeed, climate experts have said.
A decision is expected later this year. It will be taken by a group of countries known as the “Western European and Other States,” which includes, among others, Australia, Canada, and the US — meaning that a bloc EU vote would go a long way in determining who hosts the summit.

17 Jun: CBC: Why CBC News is doing a series on climate change
The environment is shaping up to be major issue in election year
by Mark Harrison
Climate change is real, it’s happening right now and it’s in our backyard in devastating, even deadly ways.
Its fingerprints are all over this spring’s floods and wildfires. Yes, natural emergencies are complex, but powerful and growing evidence shows that climate change is making flooding worse, fires like “The Beast” in Fort McMurray in 2016 more destructiveand heatwaves more life-threatening.
Canada’s Arctic is also heating up — the permafrost, which is the very foundation for the North’s infrastructure, is thawing and Indigenous ways of life are being threatened. Worse, there’s evidence these Arctic changes are shifting global weather patterns and accentuating droughts and torrential downpours around the globe.
Climate change is a critical issue for our readers, viewers and listeners. Recent polling suggests that it is a leading concern in this election year.
We want to make sure we reflect that at CBC News.
In Our Backyard is an ambitious and comprehensive CBC News project about how climate change is affecting our lives. You’ll see and hear it wherever CBC News is… online, on television, on the radio and on CBC Kids News, because Canada’s youth care deeply about this issue.
The clear scientific consensus is that we’re on an irreversible warming trajectory. Canada is on the frontline of global changes that are already altering our communities, our livelihoods and our health…ETC

By Inger Andersen, executive director of UN Environment
There is something in the air. I am not talking about pollution or greenhouse gas emissions. I am talking about the change humanity needs to address these and other environmental challenges, which have placed our planet and societies in imminent peril.
We can all sense this change: in our workplaces and schools, in our cities and communities, in the boardroom and in the media, in parliaments and city councils, in laboratories and business incubators.
People from all corners of the world are demanding a fundamental redesign of how we – as individuals and as a society – interact with the planet…
Today, as I take up the leadership of the United Nations Environment Programme, I am convinced that we can get this job done, together…
In these days of change, the organization I am leading is critical. The United Nations Environment Programme is the link between science and policy action by governments – which is a key driving force for change. The organization’s Medium-Term Strategy (2018-2021) and accompanying Programme of Work informs, supports and assists nations as they work towards a sustainable future. This Programme of Work – which guides every action the organization takes – is fully aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals, the Paris Agreement and many other international processes…
In September this year, at the UN secretary-general’s climate action summit, countries will showcase a leap in collective ambition. In 2020, at the next meeting of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity, the world will agree on new and – I hope – ambitious targets to arrest biodiversity loss…
Success for us means halting the rapid loss of species. It means preventing seven million people from dying of air pollution each year. It means countries taking action towards sustainable consumption and production. It means a planet powered by clean energy…

Elderly Melburnians are suffering hypothermia in their own homes, according to doctors at The Alfred hospital.
by Melissa Meehan
Increasing numbers of Victorian pensioners ***anxious about turning on the heating are being treated for hypothermia in a “concerning” trend that has alarmed authorities.
The sad finding was contained in a study of 217 hypothermic emergency presentations between July 7, 2009 and September 1, 2016 to Alfred Health prompted by a record-breaking cold winter in 2015…
Dr Amanda-Rajah questioned whether economic deprivation, such as being able to afford heating, or behavioural factors, such as wearing enough clothing or even thermally inefficient housing was to blame.
“With rising energy costs a contentious issue in Australia, further population-based studies are warranted,” she said.
Victorian Health Minister Jenny Mikakos said the findings were concerning…
The study of 217 patients from Alfred Health, comprising three metropolitan hospitals including The Alfred, Sandringham and Caulfield Hospitals, followed the winter of 2015, Victoria’s coldest in 26 years.

One Nation senator Pauline Hanson mentioned the scheme while withholding support for the re-elected Coalition Government’s promised $158 billion income tax cuts…
In February, the NSW Nationals, including Deputy Premier John Barilaro, promised to put “$25 million on the table” to investigate building a modern version of the scheme, calling on other states and the Commonwealth to contribute.
Back in 2007, Queensland Labor premier Peter Beattie said he wanted to resurrect a modern version of the scheme; in 2008, crossbench Queensland MP Bob Katter also championed it.
Fact Check took a closer look at the Bradfield Scheme during this year’s election campaign following repeated comments by former Nationals leader Barnaby Joyce…
We found Mr Joyce’s proposition that the scheme would ease the effects of droughts and floods in northern Australia to be pie in the sky (LINK)…

15 May: CitizensElectoralCouncil: Fact check of Bradfield Scheme flawed
RMIT ABC Fact Check made an extraordinary claim that the Bradfield Scheme is a “pie in the sky” proposal that has been discredited by experts. In the last two issues of the Australian Alert Service, Jeremy Beck fact checks the “fact checkers” and discovers a can full of serious errors! In fact, four of Australia’s leading hydraulic engineering firms investigated the Bradfield Scheme in 1984 at the direction of the Queensland State Government. Based on their investigation, this scheme to water inland Australia would have a mere $2.49 billion net capital cost and produce an annual gross revenue (value of production) of $2.02 billion. Clearly, it would pay for itself many times over in the medium to long term, as did the Snowy Mountains Scheme…

“MAY exceed 900 ppm by the end of this century unless current CO2 emissions are curtailed”.
So, the science is settled by using the open ended verb MAY.
Let’s see the real science showing the dynamic equilibrium equations for the atmospheric carbon dioxide – seawater interface.

But but but…
ClimatologistCalamitist Professor James Renwick (Vic Uni, WLG) said “it would be catastrophic”. “We’d be on track for 3C of warming globally. That’s three more degrees of warming, we’ve already had one. And that would lock in the loss of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet and a good part of the Greenland Ice Sheet and probably result in 10m of sea level rise.
“It would change rainfall and temperature extremes to the point where you’d see major crop failures. Maybe a 30 percent reduction in grain production around the world so… major food shortages and food security issues”. So there, just believe authority and the anointed high priest’s pseudo-science of doomsday calamity, or else.

Which is totally FALSE as stated by Nils Axis-Morner to Alan Jones earlier..
Renwick is shamefull pushing the scam so he can get awards and more research grants from gullible IGNORANT politicians.
They disgust me.
The whole IPCC should have to face the ICC!
90
That is quite a stretch.
Projecting the CSIRO (Cape Grim) CO2 data forward to the end of the century I could imagine CO2 levels of 540ppm. Exceeding 900ppm would require a big acceleration of the current rate of increase.

18 Jun: ABC: Billion-dollar Indigenous-led power station to revive struggling Queensland coal town
By Sally Rafferty
A proposed $2 billion Indigenous-led coal-fired power station in Collinsville in North Queensland — developed by Brisbane-based Indigenous company Shine Energy and headed by traditional Biri man Ashley Dodd — is set to revive one of the country’s oldest coal towns.
If the project is given the go-ahead, about 2,000 jobs would be created during the construction phase and 600 once operations begin, with a focus on Indigenous employment.
The potential employment boost would be welcomed by the locals who say the community is dying after a 50 per cent decline in the population over the past decade.
However, some locals fear the project is just “a drawing on a wall” and will experience the same lengthy delays as the Galilee Basin’s Adani project.
Shine Energy Australia said if it does get the tick of approval, the Collinsville project would be the first high efficient low emission ultra supercritical coal-fired power plant in the country.
“We’re actually looking at developing this as an energy park, so we are looking at building a solar PV farm that goes towards the energy so we use it as auxiliary power,” Mr Dodd said.
The construction would coincide with the closure of New South Wales Liddel Thermal Power Plant in 2022 and would enable North Queensland to address the gap the plant would leave in baseload power supply.
However, even if the project stacks up, it could still take a decade for construction to be completed.
Queensland’s Labor Government is holding strong on its commitment to 50 per cent renewable energy by 2030, and Australian Conservation Foundation spokesman Gavan McFadzean said the Collinsville project was simply not needed.
“We shouldn’t be pitching our economic prosperity and jobs to the industries of the past, they should be to the future,” Mr McFazdean said…
***There is a shift globally around coal-fired plants with former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg announcing recently that he would contribute $US500 million ($715 million) toward closing coal-fired plants across the United States saying it was a race against time with climate change…
Shine Energy CEO Ashley Dodd said he is confident the project will get the backing from investors.
“We’ve had discussions with Credit Swisse anywhere between the $2 billion mark there is a lot of interest out there in the equity and debt market,” Mr Dodd said…

18 Jun: ABC: We still have time to act on climate change — but records will tumble for next 20 years regardless of emissions: study
ABC Science By Jo Khan
Our last summer was the hottest on record in Australia, and we can expect the record breaking weather to continue for at least the next 20 years, new climate change research has found…
Immediate action to drastically reduce emissions would rein in the temperature record-breaking from around 2040, according to a study published in Nature Climate Change (LINK) today…
***Hearing how fire agencies across the country were struggling to manage unprecedented bushfires motivated lead author Scott Power from the Bureau of Meteorology to undertake the study…
Dr Power used 22 climate models to project how often we would break temperature records in the next century, under both high (business as usual) and low emissions scenarios.
“We found that you’re going to smash and set records far more frequently if global greenhouse gas emissions continue to rise the way they have been,” Dr Power said…
High temperature records (LINK) are already being set regularly in Australia…
Sarah Perkins-Kirkpatrick, a climate scientist from the University of New South Wales, who was not involved in the study:
“It’s not just getting incrementally hotter, it’s getting hotter a lot faster,” Dr Perkins-Kirkpatrick said…
Without action to drastically reduce emissions we will be breaking at least one monthly temperature record every year by the end of the century, Dr Power said.
“To be honest it’ll probably be a record nearly every month.”…

18 Jun: Irish Times: Ambitious plan to cut emissions and make Ireland carbon-neutral by 2050
New climate legislation, budgets and targets will ensure greater oversight
by Kevin O’Sullivan, Harry McGee & Jennifer Bray
VIDEO: 2min59sec (Conor Pope, Irish Times consumer affairs correspondent: we’re in the middle of a climate change catastrophe and only a small cabal of tin-hat-wearing climate change deniers believe otherwise)
The plan includes major policy shifts to enable a rapid decarbonisation of the State within 12 years, including targets for putting 1 million electric vehicles on Irish roads; retrofitting of 500,000 homes and achieving 70 per cent renewable energy in power generation.
The Climate Action Plan to Tackle Climate Breakdown was launched yesterday by Taoiseach Leo Varadkar and Minster for Climate Action Richard Bruton at an event at Grangegorman in Dublin attended by most of the Cabinet…
It contains 183 actions that the Government claims will help Ireland meet exacting 2030 EU climate emission targets, as well as a new commitment to make Ireland 100 per cent carbon neutral by 2050…
Minister for Finance Paschal Donohoe said the outcome of public consultation on how best to use revenues from carbon tax would be considered in advance of the 2020 budget. No decision had been made on “pacing” increases in coming years but the €80 (Aus$131) per tonne target was adopted…READ ON

Under the new regime emissions from homes, transport, farming and industry will have to be avoided completely or offset by planting trees or using technology to extract CO2 from the atmosphere.
The plan sets out dramatic policy changes in the areas of tax, waste, planning, transport, construction and agriculture…
The state is also facing the prospect of paying billions in fines unless it meets its targets. Ireland must roughly halve its carbon emissions by 2030, from 60 million tonnes to 33 million tonnes…

Greta Carbo’s parents don’t drive (too dirty) but I do like Dennis’ hydrogen hot air balloon suggestion… better still, she could row a boat across the big pond – might do her the world of good:

Why not ‘Young Swede rows 4800km…’ then when/if she arrived, she could plant some trees for all her emitted pollution and hot air expelled along the way. She may want to take Isaac’s advice, however, before setting out: “I usually just try and breathe. 12 Jun: ForeignPolicy: Nuclear Disarmament’s Lessons for Climate Change.
If we can ban nukes, we can ban carbon emissions. Here’s how.
by Charli Carpenter (professor of political science at the University of Massachusetts Amherst) and Ronald Mitchell (professor of political science at the University of Oregon)
Throughout the Cold War, nuclear weapons were the main existential threat to the planet…
But thanks to the concerted work of a coalition of activists, nuclear weapons were banned outright in a 2017 treaty that has been signed by 70 countries and ratified by 23.
Although the treaty is not yet in force, if it ever becomes international law, it will represent a major step forward toward nuclear disarmament…
If nations can come together to ban something as precious to great powers as nuclear weapons, why can’t they at least try to do the same for carbon emissions? Unlike a nuclear war, which represents a terrible but highly unlikely future threat, carbon-induced climate change is a human catastrophe already in motion…
A 2012 report of experts (LINK) published by the aid organization DARA International calculated that 400,000 people die every year as a direct result of carbon-induced climate change…

How to Talk to a Populist About Climate Change
Thirty percent of global emissions come from countries led by populist nationalist leaders. Current climate policy approaches are ill-suited for these regimes. Here’s an alternative…
Currently, treaty negotiations include all countries and take place through a consensus-based U.N. forum. Instead, activists should create a global network, identify a state willing to take the lead (perhaps Sweden), and host a separate conference of like-minded nations. Only nations willing to commit to a Humanitarian Pledge for the environment should be allowed to attend the conference, which would focus on codifying a global understanding of the humanitarian and moral costs of carbon-induced climate change, an agreement that net zero carbon dioxide emissions has to be the end goal, and a consensus around the steps signatories will take to get there.
The event should be publicized and celebrated. Alongside experts, victims of climate change—including teenage activists standing in for future generations—should be given space on the floor…
Most fundamentally, states at a Zero Carbon conference would have to decide what a Zero Carbon world looks like, but to give one option, switching to nuclear power has already been shown to be a cheap, simple, low-risk, and feasible way to meet Zero Carbon goals quickly in countries where other renewable resources are less than fully reliable…

15 Jun: TheConversation: What George Bush and the neocons can teach us about fighting climate change
by Ash Murphy, PhD Researcher, International Environmental Governance, Keele University
(Disclosure statement: This article is part of a wider research project currently being undertaken by the author)
Be under no illusion, the world is losing the fight against climate change. The amount of CO₂ in the atmosphere continues to increase, meaning humanity is forcing the Earth closer to cataclysmic alterations that will reshape the entire biosphere…
Beyond the Paris Agreement?
Countries could instead deal with contentious international threats by stepping away from the usual processes of international law, and introducing frameworks that aim to uncompromisingly challenge the root of the menace. And there is some precedent. One example is the 2003 Proliferation Security Initiative (PSI) – a set of principles designed predominantly by the US to curb the international transfer of materials related to nuclear weapons…
My suggestion is that the UK follow the precedent of the PSI and create a Climate Security Initiative (CSI). A CSI could encompass a set of bold principles to reduce emissions and champion green technology, going well beyond the Paris Agreement and propelling the UK into a leadership position that other like-minded states would be able to support.
There already exist a number of states that could form an initial CSI group, all willing to commit to radical steps to fight climate change…

17 Jun: Forbes: ‘Chernobyl’ Provided The Climate Change Metaphor That ‘Game Of Thrones’ Failed To Deliver
by Dani Di Placido, Senior Contributor (I write about film, television, pop culture, and other fun stuff)
Despite the medieval fantasy setting, the premise of Game of Thrones felt oddly relatable; a divided nation, too busy infighting to acknowledge the icy armageddon steadily approaching from the North, the deadly invasion of weather-shifting White Walkers.
George R.R. Martin, in an interview with the New York Times, stated that his story was “a perfect metaphor for understanding climate change.” His characters “are fighting their individual battles over power and status and wealth. And those are so distracting [for] them that they’re ignoring the threat of ‘winter is coming,’ which has the potential to destroy all of them and to destroy their world.”
Even when faced with concrete proof, Queen Cersei’s strategy was to simply ignore the problem and hope that it resolved itself.
Maddenly, the strategy worked – the climate change metaphor shattered, quite literally, when Arya Stark’s well-aimed blade instantly put an end to the Long Night…
That plot twist marked the end of the only popular analogy we had for climate change. That is, until HBO’s Chernobyl dramatized a true story, one that proved uncannily close to today’s political climate…READ ON

16 Jun: UK Times: Your legacy isn’t worth a trillion quid, Mrs May
The prime minister is going down in a blaze of vanity and arrogance.
by Dominic Lawson
An apology. In a previous column, I gave readers the impression that Theresa May, whatever her faults, was at least not guilty of vanity. How wrong I was: in her last weeks as prime minister she has been single-mindedly determined, as it is described by those around her, to secure her “legacy”. Who, but the PM herself, cares about that? Certainly not voters, none of whom minds which politician gets the credit for what.
Worse, in her haste before her exit from Downing Street next month, May has attempted to sideline the chancellor, who has reasonable concerns about the costs of satisfying her vanity. That is why the Treasury has been frantically leaking the costs of all these various legacy measures, coming up with a figure of more than a trillion pounds. But this vanity is trivial compared with May’s announcement (in a press release, not to parliament) committing the country to become “net zero carbon” by 2050.
Even if Philip Hammond’s estimate that this will cost “a trillion pounds” is contrived, such a proposal deserves the fullest scrutiny. There is insufficient parliamentary time for this before May’s departure, so she proposes to enact it via a “statutory instrument”, which requires no debate or readings in the two legislative chambers. Add arrogance to vanity…

The price for ““net zero carbon” by 2050.” is a divide by zero type calculation: It cannot be done at any monetary price, only at a massive price to humanity.
The idea that the genteel will ride around on thoroughbred horses with candles in chandeliers says nothing of the masses. The irony is that the cities where the greens live will be the first casualties if somehow this madness is taken to its illogical conclusion. Equally ironic is that PETA will be totally lost as we revert to beasts of burden.

Brisbane commuters are furious after two climate change activists shut down the city’s busiest street after gluing themselves to the road.
Ebony and Sergio from Extinction Rebellion Australia began the protest around 8am this morning, gluing their hands to a zebra crossing on Queen St…
Ebony, who is wearing an anti-Adani shirt, said she was blocking the road to “take a stand against extinction”.
“I’m not fighting, I’m speaking up for Mother Earth. We have to stop all of this bulls**t that’s hurting. We can all feel it. We cannot lie anymore, we have to tell the truth,” she said via social media…
Sergio similarly glued himself onto the road to fight extinction…
Three other Extinction Rebellion protesters stood nearby and held a banner that read “Business as usual = Death”.
A Facebook event for the protest was created before this morning.
It said the motive was to “give commuters a little shock”…
The protest is not sitting well with Brisbane commuters, with one commenter on social media even calling for the pair to be jailed…

16 Jun: NationalScotland: Why I’m joining the Rebel camp outside the Scottish Parliament
By Karin Goodwin
John Hardy, one of the organisers of this week’s Rebel Camp, has been campaigning on climate change for 15 years, since he was at university. He has worked for the Green party in Northern Ireland and Scotland – as well as being an organiser for the Divest Parliament campaign which aims to get MPs at Westminster to divest their pension funds from fossil fuels.
“To me, Extinction Rebellion is another means of bringing about the change that is needed to tackle the climate emergency,” he said. “Only, it isn’t just about changing politics or changing finance, its about system change. It isn’t enough to simply tinker around the edges of our economy and society in order to fix climate change – we need to revoluntionise how we live.
“Our obsession with consumption and consumerism is not only bad for the planet, it’s bad for our well-being and mental health. The power of corporations means that politics no longer serves the people, so we need to change how we do politics.” XR is calling for a Citizen’s Assembly.
Hardy first got involved in XR after seeing the occupation of the bridges in London last November and “felt empowered to take direct action to fight raise the alarm on climate breakdown”…
…”We are currently experiencing the sixth mass extinction of life on earth and the UK Government is totally distracted by Brexit. This is not important compared to the potential collapse of human civilisation.”…

***AUSTRALIAN COMMUNITY MEDIA AND QLD COUNTRY LIFE, ARE OWNED BY NINE NETWORK (FORMERLY FAIRFAX):
18 Jun: Qld Country Life: Addressing the ‘wicked problem’ of climate change
Both in Australia and globally, agriculture is identified as one of the sectors most exposed to adverse climate change impacts.
While the effects of climate change will impact all sources of the sector’s value stores, a new research report by the Australian Farm Institute focuses on the biophysical impact on natural capital and the need for policy to address this concern.
Themes from the soon-to-be-released report, which interrogates the need for a national strategy on climate change and agriculture, will be discussed at the AFI’s mid-year conference in Brisbane next week.
AFI’s report, Australian agriculture: an increasingly risky business, will also underpin the conference agenda…
Minister for Water Resources, Drought, Rural Finance, Natural Disaster and Emergency Management ***David Littleproud will open the two-day conference on Wednesday June 26.
Sponsored by ***Australian Community Media, the agenda features more than 30 speakers and panellists across seven sessions representing farmers, community leaders, researchers, business managers, communicators and sector advocates.
(AFI executive director Richard) Heath said that a diversity of perspectives was important when tackling the ‘wicked problem’ of climate change and agriculture.
Many of the conference sessions will include a farmer panel to ‘ground-truth’ the discussion before the session is opened to Q&A from the floor and online…
Conference speakers will represent the National Farmers’ Federation, ABARES, CSIRO, World Wildlife Fund, GrainGrowers, Cattle Council, AgForce, the MDBA, Farmers for Climate Action, the Bureau of Meteorology, Queensland Farmers’ Federation and more.
More information on sessions and speakers for the 26-27 June event can be found at LINK…

***and David Littleproud will say what?
Aug 2018: news.com.au: Agriculture minister David Littleproud says he doesn’t ‘give a rats’ whether climate change is man-made
THERE was laughter, jeers and disbelief during fiery debate about our drought crisis, which prompted a controversial outburst from a minister.
by Ben Graham; with wires
The stunning outburst on ABC’s bush edition of Q&A last night has sparked a wave of severe criticism and there are even calls for him resign.
The audience in Lismore in the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales could even be heard gasping and booing as the Minister made a series of controversial comments.
He told host Tony Jones that his electorate of Maranoa, which spans southwestern Queensland, had been in a drought for eight years, saying: “There’s no silver bullet to this apart from rain.”
However, when he was asked by the host if he believed the drought was linked to human-induced climate change, Littleproud said: “Look, that’s a big call.”
“I don’t give a rats if it’s man-made or not,” he added, saying that hardworking Aussies were already feeling the pinch from rising energy bills.
“We can’t do it at the moment,” he said. “We have to be able to turn the lights on, turn the pumps on.”
He then took aim at environmentalists — blaming them for sabotaging the national water infrastructure fund…
“Unfortunately every time we go to build something, the state finds a reason not to and finds some frog that wouldn’t like the temperature of the dam or a butterfly that may not like it.”
At that point, Mr Littleproud was cut off by boos from the audience, but he hit back at the critics.
“I’m sorry, but you’ve got to make a decision … do you want an agricultural sector or do you want to live Kumbaya?” he said.
The comments have been roundly criticised on social media, with many calling for him to resign…
However, Malcolm Turnbull appeared to disagree with his Coalition colleague today, saying climate change helps cause droughts.
Mr Turnbull has owned a sheep and cattle farm in the NSW Upper Hunter with his wife Lucy since 1982 and believes this is the worst dry spell he’s seen.
“I think everyone agrees that we’re seeing rainfall that is, if you like, more erratic, droughts that are more frequent and seasons that are hotter,” he told the ABC…

The predictions from the warmists are that up to 1,000,000 species are expected to become extinct due to climate change, many of which have yet to be discovered. Of those yet to be discovered, they know nothing of their characteristics and genetics, and ability to survive so it’s a nonsense to suggest they will become extinct. Perhaps the 1,000,000 can be revised down

Jo, this is worth a read:
http://catallaxyfiles.com/2019/06/18/a-cancerous-fantasy-australian-outlook-2019/
“The Guardian and the AFR waxed lyrical about the blueprint, which is to shape the economy for the Brave New World. We were breathlessly told the nation is once again ‘at the crossroads’, that the report is a “call to arms” and we would, “Drift towards a future of slow decline economically and socially” unless we act now to ‘create a future of greater prosperity for all, globally competitive industries and a sustainable environment’. Ah, the sustainable rub!
“The AFR approvingly quoted the report as saying, ‘The world is changing, and Australia will need to adapt much more rapidly than in the past if it is to keep up.’ The report pointed to a need to focus on:
“Technology, (without which the CSIRO as prime financier would not have a guernsey), and better education, quality jobs, and better cities
“Following these bromides, there is the real agenda: ‘reliable, affordable low emissions’ (near zero within 40 years). This is amplified by a call for a land shift for sustainable food fibre and fuel production with, of course, carbon sequestration
“And the ‘clarion call’ finishes with the anodyne appeal for more ‘curiosity, collaboration and solutions’; clothed in a “shift in culture”, this involves a rebuild of trust in politics, business and social institutions.
“As with the multitude of previous blueprints for the future, the Australian Outlook 2019 is a means of pointing out that the market based economy is flawed and needs the guidance and wisdom of those gathered together to ensure it is fit for the future purpose. ‘Strong leadership and bold action’ is the ticket.
“The modern elixir and the rationale for assembling gthe team is a need to transform the energy economy. We are told once again that we can have, indeed need to progress towards, a carbon free energy system. This, we are informed, will both be more sustainable and cheaper than those archaic coal generators, some of which refuse to die even when faced with competition from wind that receives a subsidy greater than the market price.
“The transition to renewables is said to be inevitable ‘due to continuing reductions in the cost of renewable electricity generation technologies’, but if we can accelerate this, we will enjoy higher growth. Instead of a little over $100,000 per capita by 2060, we will average close to $140,000.

Hi Jo
What have squid & octopus done to researchers that they need to be subject to these cruel experiments? Sure, your average octopus might have a higher IQ then a marine biologist but that’s no reason to torcher innocent animals:) Wasn’t there a post a few weeks back about researchers putting octopus in a low oxygen tank to make them go blind or something? All in the name of finding out what would happen to poor cephalopods if only the climate would change to match the researchers fanciful hopes. I suppose that squid are not cuddly enough to get animal rights activist interest but the university ethics committee must surly look at these proposals before they let them go ahead?
What was the pH of the water they used in the experiment? I wouldn’t think that only 900ppm atmospheric CO2 would change ocean alkalinity by much, if anything, so whatever pH they used to produce a hoped for reaction in the squid would have had to have been much more acidic than 900ppm atmos equivalence. Anyway only mass outgassing from oceanic volcanic vents could possibly change the pH of the oceans, not a small increase of a trace gas in the atmosphere so the whole thing is just more junk science (if you call it science).
The whole thing seems so absurd to me that I wonder how such a research proposal could have possibly received a grant. I suppose they only needed to put the words climate change in the proposal to get the grants committee to approve funding. Says a lot about the current state of research funding, lets hope the new government will start to crack down on this sort of waste of public money. I won’t hold my breath. In the mean time let’s free the squids!

OT (due to peeve level):
I’m surprised no one is seriously considering suing Australian Universities for the bias and prejudice they seem to be enabling and embodying on campus.
When do we get a Royal Commission into the politically and ideologically prejudiced and biased behaviors of Australia’s tax-pay supported Universities and their administrations?
Why is it that no one is yet suing University Education Departments for producing deeply biased and prejudiced as well incompetent teachers, who are teaching fear of the end of the world to children for political purposes and then having the cheek to call it an education? Why are the creators and purveyors of green ideology propaganda within education materials not being sued for all they are worth?

Feter PitzRoy above is amazed that variations in atmospheric CO2 levels proposed by the IPCCCCC alarmists would have little effect on the oceans.
Maybe if someone could explain to him that the amounts of CO2 available in the atmosphere and in the oceans differs by a ratio of 1 to 49.
Possibly this means that if atmospheric CO2 went from the present level up by 49 ppm , then the oceans may go up by one ppm to maintain equilibrium.
What do we think?
KK
60
On the annual time scale CO2 in air drops through June, July, August due to photosynthesis across Russia and Canada. On the decadal time-scale it appears the oceans only absorb a tiny quantity (if any)of CO2 because the air % is increasing. That in part must be due to us releasing that which had been sequestered from the atmosphere by plants millions of years ago. Geological records suggest that we are merely restoring the balance to more “normal” levels. If we could work to double CO2 and make it 2 parts CO2 in 2500 parts N & O we would have a healthier biosphere and I very much doubt that extra 1 part would affect air:ocean ratios significantly.

🙂

Years ago at college I did some simple experiments on water evaporation. It seemed that vapour pressure and air movement were every bit as important as temperature. Only slight reduction in ambient air water vapour increased evaporation significantly. I’d suggest it might be similar with CO2 though it is chemically bound up in ions in the water. Do we actually know the precise manner in-which CO2 enters and leaves the oceans?
I suspect political contrivance.
20
🙂 thanks for the overview.
