Coral reef totally recovers (for 400th time) and researchers surprised

CoralsIf only coral researchers read skeptic blogs, they’d know that corals have been getting bleached and wrecked by cyclones for millions of years. They have adaptable genes, honed by 500 million years of natural selection, plus epigenetic tricks, and with safe zones to seed recovery. The Great Barrier Reef spans 2,000 kilometers and five degrees Celsius from 27 to 32°C and we’re still finding reefs we didn’t even know about. The pH swings on a daily basis, and fish do better when it does. One coral has adapted to ocean “acidification” in 6 months. Other fish remarkably adapted from salt to freshwater in just fifty years. As Peter Ridd says: Of all the ecosystems in the world, the reef is one that’s best at adapting to climate change.

So once again, corals have recovered — and yet the “experts” who wear their dogma covered glasses didn’t see it coming.

‘Teeming with life’: New hope for the Great Barrier Reef as island shows remarkable coral growth

By Melissa Martin and Erin Semmler, ABC

One Tree Island was lashed by Cyclone Hamish in 2009, destroying much of the island’s coral.

In the five years following the cyclone, no metabolic recovery was detected on the reef and by 2014 calcification of the coral had declined by 75 per cent.

But things changed dramatically between 2014 and 2017, when Ms Davis and her team at the National Marine Science Centre found the coral system calcification increased four-fold.

“We found that the coral ecosystem has completely recovered from this cyclone event after eight years,” Ms Davis said.

Commenter Pat points out that the Brisbane Times picked this up a week before the ABC.

In other news, environmentalists are doing their best to destroy tourism:

She said tourists are more worried about the reef than previously because of the way it is portrayed in the media.

“Questions I get asked everyday, they say, ‘so is the reef dead? Is this bleached here?'” she said.

Things the ABC BBC and CBC might forget to tell you about coral reefs:

Sacked professor Peter Ridd has been saying this for years !
JCU, give him back his job
And sack the village idiots who arranged Ridd’s sacking
For undermining heir own lucrative big earners
By showing that corals in the GBR
    Recover from bleaching
And have been doing it for thousands of years.

Place money on top of University. Coral approves and suddenly regrows. Simple. Coral can “see” money and cares about JCU. Take away money and coral dies.

Its a fact that money drives the climate. Without money we will have a run-away climate catastrophe.

Without the money stolen from those who created it, the catastrophe would be that the climate alarmists would have to get real jobs and actually EARN the wealth they are given. Like all parasites, they object to their enslaved hosts working to eliminate them.

The climate alarmists have no more moral right nor scientific justification for what they are doing than a common back ally thug who takes your money by force. On the other hand, we have both the moral right and scientific justification to eliminate them with extreme prejudice. They and we have all but run out of peaceful options.

            BS!

It is an absolute that you are alive or dead. To become dead, one need do nothing and that state will soon be achieved. After which no action on your part is possible. To live requires, absolutely, that you act in such a way so as to stay alive. Such acts are not arbitrary nor whimsical. The actions must be consistent with the kind of entity you in fact are and be consistent, in fact, with the environment in which you are to live. To act counter to that is to act counter to your ability to sustain your life. To act consistently counter to your life, is to hasten the day of its ending.

This, I contend, sets an objective foundation for how one must act individually and collectively if you choose to live. As I said, if you don’t choose to live, do nothing and your choice will be fulfilled and you become morally irrelevant. Only if you choose to live, will it be necessary to act such that the actions support will support staying alive. Acting that way is the essence of being moral.

There is a massive amount of necessary detail to be discovered and discussed that descend from the choice to remain alive. Such detail has many optional items but much of it is not optional. None of it is dependent upon whim but only on the facts of reality which can be objectively determined.

To presume, as Kant et.al. have done, that reality cannot be known is to destroy the foundation of rational thought. It is an attempt to play it deuces wild which each individual defining what is without reference to what actually is. Or by an even worse alternative, depend upon the next person’s thinking who himself is depending upon the next person continuing until the last person is depending upon what you think.

A summation of zeros is zero no matter how many zeros you sum. THIS is the basic meaning of morality is relative. Such thinking is nothing but a complicated and very painful path to death. See the ultimate end of any collectivist society, either totalitarian or democratic, for instructive cases in point.

As I said, that you are alive or dead is an absolute! Staying alive is the challenge.

              HI Lionel,
That’s a good framework to begin discussion on the current collective bind that humanity is in.

Useful, and necessary that the public is drawn to this discussion.

“Or by an even worse alternative, depend upon the next person’s thinking who himself is depending upon the next person continuing until the last person is depending upon what you think”.

People seem frightened to act in their own interests because they’ve been conditioned to defer to the “group” position on things.

Not just the MSM. Apparently it has PM Morrison hooked into the scam as well. I’ve had high hopes for him on smashing the CAGW scam being perpetrated here in Australia but that hope is diminishing. There is still time for him to do something significant, such as:

        1. remove the ban on nuclear
        2. force all power companies to keep their existing coal fired power stations open and/or replaced by new ones
        3. scrap all renewables subsidies, and I mean all not just the ones he promised
        4. scrap all emission targets – we all know they are meaningless and worthless anyway for a number of reasons

but they all will have to be in his current term of office.

          PeterS @ #2.1.1 said

          remove the ban on nuclear

Umm. No. Don’t remove it but modify it:

          – Keep the ban on HPWC (High Pressure Water Cooled) reactors -these are the dangerous and expensive ones

          – only permit the safe LFTRs (Liquid Fuel Thorium Reactors)

Otherwise someone will try building pressurised water-cooled reactors — they’re the dangerous ones; they’re the over-the-top expensive ones. LFTRs hold all the safety cards and will likely hold most of the expense ones, too. The pressure containment vessel is a high proportion of the cost of the water cooled reactors.

It’s usually wise to keep any technology decisions by politicians general and hope they choose the correct one, but the safety and cost advantages of LFTR makes them the necessary — rather than a selectible — choice. They are not an option. (You may have noticed, that political favour seems to settle more readily on the more expensive solutions for problems)

Keeping the HPWC reactors out of it will steal the thunder and outrage completely from the Greenies. They will push all the failings of the HPWC reactors and when they’ve run through their lists of reasons why nuclear is not an option, they can be told:

Yes, we agree with you. That’s why those ones are still banned.

Pebble reactors (as recently built by the Chinese), Homogeneous type (recent Russian 170MW build) even the small modular type (although I am not in favour) and possibly the Canadian CANDU type (a bit expensive as it need lots of heavy water, but it uses unenriched uranium so cannot be used to make nuclear bomb materials)?

            • #
              Analitik

A second vote for CANDU. Higher capex on the reactor but no capex requirement for enrichment facilities as well as the non-proliferation thing. And also no need to shutdown for refuelling

            • #
              sophocles

Pebble reactors produce strontium-90 as a fine dust. It’s a highly radioactive form of waste and requires disposal in a nuclear waste place.
Pebble reactors are very high temperature reactors. Could become a problem. Some require a containment building.

LFTRs on the other hand are capable of burning fuel down to non-radioactive ash. They do not require containment buildings. Can be sunk into the ground. No heavy-water needed, no fuel rods needed, no fuel rod reprocessing needed, no moderator or control rods needed. They are thermally controlled.

At first glance, LFTR still wins over pebble in the overall safety stakes and in the control and waste disposal stakes.

I can do no better that to offer a quote from Richard S. Lindzen, in his paper: Global Warming for the Two Cultures.

“Remember, in a world that buys into the incoherent ‘precautionary principle,’ even the
mere claim of remote possibility justifies extreme action.

Presumably, the power these people desperately seek includes the power to roll back the
status and welfare that the ordinary person has acquired and continues to acquire through
the fossil fuel generated industrial revolution and return them to their presumably more
appropriate status as serfs. Many more among the world’s poorest will be forbidden the
      opportunity to improve their condition.

Nevertheless, when these claims are presented to the leaders of our societies, along with
the bogus claim that 97% of scientists agree, our leaders are afraid to differ, and proceed,
lemming-like, to plan for the suicide of industrial society.”

We are in Provence at the moment – about 90k from Montpellier which was said to have experienced 45degC two days ago. That day it only go to 34deg here, near Gordes. There is a rumour that the 45deg was on a domestic thermometer in the sun, reported to local media – who published – who were picked up internationally and – lo and behold – all time record temperature. Christy et al (I think) in the US are trying to trace the thermometers that are giving these “record” temperatures, but have been unable to find them in the official records.

And so it goes on – fabricated Global Warming.

The fox was tracked from Svallbad to Greenland
And then from Greenland to the Canadian arctic.
        Total distance . ~ 3500 ks.
The fox has unfortunately either lost it’s tracking collar
Or been killed by another predator
As no more signals were received after it got to the Canadian Arctic.

        Ummmmm ?
Possibly this is just as well.
I hear rumours that Canadian & Norwegian Greenists
        Were looking for the fox.
They think a young fox walking on water 3500 ks. IS a true miracle !
As it got help from Santa Claus at the North pole.
They want to make this fox a central TOTEM

In 1992 I was snorkelling off the so-called Gili Islands between Bali and Lombok in Indonesia (Gili means island in Bahasa Indonesia) and there were quite a few circular bare batches of dead white coral, maybe 10 metres or more in diameter, where the local fishermen in pre tourist times had dropped dynamite to kill fish, but the blue staghorn coral which is the fasted growing was starting to repair the damage.

Zane, I was there in 1986 and the occasional BOOM! was indeed heard from Gili Trawangan, where locals said itinerant fishermen from the mainland (Lombok) would use explosives. The coral surrounding Gili T appeared healthy and colourful (like you I was snorkelling, diving only 15 – 20 ft max before my ears bunged up) while over on Gili Air it was a desert, overrun by kina sea urchins. The first up-market resort had just been built there so maybe damage from wharf construction?

        – the Arctic is melting, we all know that
        – the endangered Poly-Bear ice-bergs melt too

Svalbard is located next to a string of volcanoes. If the temperature has suddenly risen 4C its time to consider moving. It may be more realistic to say the government owned coal mining there is shutting down and the only other potential revenue source is mining global warming. Simply spread the coal tailings across a large area of snow and wait for it to heat up. Then claim runaway global warming and the need for a government paid clean up ie Keynesian economics.

When the government needs an excuse to spend other people’s money, climate change is the go to reason.

(excerpts) In March this year Kay Davis was awarded Southern Cross University’s International Women’s Day Scholarship for her outstanding research. She accepted the award via video link from her latest research location at Lord Howe Island, the southernmost coral reef in the world located 600 km directly east of mainland Port Macquarie on the NSW mid north coast.
“Lord Howe Island is so beautiful and we are the first team to ever measure ecosystem metabolism on the reef there,” she said.
“I hope my award will inspire other women to follow their passion in science, so Australia can raise its relative percentage in STEM careers above the current 16 per cent.”

Members of Congress who claim that building “a simple road” in his state will harm wildlife, like the porcupine caribou, “don’t know what they’re talking about,” Alaska Senator Dan Sullivan (R) told CNSNews.com in an exclusive interview last Wednesday…

“Whenever you try to just build a simple road in Alaska – most Americans just take that for granted – but we’ll have, several what I would consider radical extreme environmental groups sue to stop it. Happens all the time.”…
“Unfortunately, radical environmental groups always do this ‘Oh, my God, everything’s going to die,’ when you build a road, a damn road,” Sullivan said, “In most states, you can build a road anywhere you want. You don’t have 80 environmental groups suing to stop it, but in my state, you try to build one damn road, and you’ll have so many outside groups that don’t care about my constituents suing to stop the road.”…READ ON

Importantly, its not warm water causing bleaching. Within the coral triangle sea level drops by up to 20-30 cm around some tropical western Pacific islands during El Nino.

Of course sea level drops cause bleaching. A polyp out of water and in the sun won’t last long.

The bleaching in Sydney Harbour had me stumped, it looked like warm water was responsible because of the marine heatwave.

Its seems more likely that strong westerly winds lowered the sea level inside the harbour, causing the bleaching.

I didn’t mean to infer that this is the ONLY cause of bleaching. I have no way of knowing how many causes there may be.

That’s okay, I’m fishing for counter arguments, my money is on sea level drop as the primary cause of bleaching.

It’s the relative temperature change that is important in bleaching events. In the bigger picture, adaptations to one temperature regime will not do well at another. If you examine the coral species around heron island, they are not the same as those around lizard island which is much further north.

Corals exist and flourish in far warmer waters.

They ADAPT, different species move around.

It was a short period of lower water level exposing the corals, and lack of flow (which carries the food for the corals) that caused this bleaching.

The coral inhabitants moved out for a while.

ie, it was the El Nino and the SUN.

MASSIVE and FAST RECOVERY, so it can’t have been “climate change™” unless “climate change™” has reversed. 😉

                P.F.
The current type of coral animal has survived since just after the Permian extinction event (250 million years ago). It has evolved into numerous species with different skelatal? (architectural?) structures but it depends on its ‘companion’ photosynthetic species. These convert the waste products of the coral into fertilizer and provide supplemental food for the coral animal. (I believe recent research has found that a yeast may also be involved). These are the temperature sensitive (and coloured) part of the reefs. If a suitable plant type substitute is available then this is incorporated into the coral animal. If not then the coral animal dies and the ABC goes plutonic about bleaching.
The same type of coral is found in the Red Sea despite a water temperature up to 5℃ higher than in Qld. And a related coral type lives below the depth that sunlight (and ABC reporters) penetrate.
Corals are more adaptable than you.

Andy, the GBR was not in it’s present location 10,000 years ago
      Why ?
Because THEN, the present location was dry land.
Due to it being then an ice age with huge amount of water locked up in ice sheets.
The GBR grew where it is now after the ice sheets melted and the previously dry land was flooded.
So this does place a time limit on how many times the current GBR has recovered from bleaching events.
PS Before the ice sheets melted, there was another
GBR present at the old sea level on the coast.
It’s remnants have been discovered in deep water further out to sea from the current GBR.

1 Jul: AP: Floating Antarctic ice goes from record high to record lows
    by Seth Borenstein
The amount of ice circling Antarctica is suddenly plunging from a record high to record lows, baffling scientists.
Floating ice off the southern continent steadily increased from 1979 and hit a record high in 2014. But three years later, the annual average extent of Antarctic sea ice hit its lowest mark, wiping out three-and-a-half decades of gains — and then some, a NASA study of satellite data shows.

In recent years, “things have been crazy,” said Mark Serreze, director of the National Snow and Ice Data Center. In an email, he called the plummeting ice levels “a white-knuckle ride.”
Serreze and other outside experts said they don’t know if this is a natural blip that will go away or more long-term global warming that is finally catching up with the South Pole…READ ALL

1 Jul: BBC: Chubb cuts coal insurance exposure because of climate change
The firm will no longer underwrite the building and operation of new coal-fired plants or new risks for companies that generate more than 30% of their revenues from coal mining.
Chairman Evan G. Greenberg said Chubb accepts “the reality of climate change… on our planet”.
Allianz, Hannover, and Lloyds Banking Group have scaled back coal insurance.
The Switzerland-based insurer does most of its business in the US, where President Donald Trump has vowed to revive the coal sector.

Chubb is thought to be the biggest insurer operating in the US to introduce the policy, and it could put pressure on firms such as AIG and Travelers to follow suit.
“Making the transition to a low-carbon economy involves planning and action by policymakers, investors, businesses and citizens alike,” Mr Greenberg said in a statement.
Chubb said exceptions to the new policy would be considered until 2022, taking into account an insured company’s commitment to reduce coal dependence and also regions that do not have practical near-term alternative energy sources…

    hmmm!

1 Jul: Nature: Committed emissions from existing energy infrastructure jeopardize 1.5 °C climate target
This is an unedited manuscript that has been accepted for publication. Nature Research are providing this earlyversion of the manuscript as a service to our customers. The manuscript will undergo copyediting, typesetting and a proof review before it is published in its final form. Please note that duringthe production process errors may be discovered which could affect the content, and all legaldisclaimers apply.

    Authors include Ken Caldeira…

We estimate that, if operated as historically, existing infrastructure will emit about 658 gigatonnes (Gt) of CO2 (ranging from 226 to 1,479 Gt CO2 depending on assumed lifetimes and utilization rates). More than half of these emissions are projected to come from the electricity sector, and infrastructure in China, the USA and the EU28 countries represent approximately 41 per cent, 9 per cent and 7 per cent of the total, respectively. If built, proposed power plants (planned, permitted or under construction) would emit approximately an additional 188 (range 37–427) Gt CO2.
Committed emissions from existing and proposed energy infrastructure (about 846 Gt CO2) thus represent more than the entire remaining carbon budget if mean warming is to be limited to 1.5 °C with a probability of 50–66 per cent (420–580 Gt CO2)5, and perhaps two-thirds of the remaining carbon budget if mean warming is to be limited to below 2 °C (1,170–1,500 Gt CO2)5. The remaining carbon budget estimates are varied and nuanced, depending on the climate target and the availability of large-scale negative emissions16.

Nevertheless, our emission estimates suggest that little or no additional CO2-emitting infrastructure can be commissioned, and that infrastructure retirements that are earlier than historical ones (or retrofits with carbon capture and storage technology) may be necessary, in order to meet the Paris Agreement climate goals…READ ON

Multiple investigations cleared the scientists of wrongdoing, but the false allegations proved enduring. Donald Trump publicly called on world leaders to tackle global warming just prior to the “Climategate” affair, but became skeptical of climate change after the story broke.

The identity of the hackers has remained a mystery despite the efforts of law enforcement and journalists.
It can be revealed for the first time that evidence points to the Russian city of Ekaterinburg.
Clues had been inadvertently hidden within the scientists’ emails all along. Whoever released the hacked messages put each message in a text file and used a peculiar system to name each of these files. The names were generated through Unix Time — a system that counts seconds elapsed since the first of January 1970 in UTC.

***I have shared all relevant evidence with the UK’s National Crime Agency…ETC ETC

***I am not releasing the name of any individual looked at in this investigation to the public, but have shared all relevant evidence with the UK’s National Crime Agency…

Shortly before the 2009 climate summit Donald Trump signed an open letter in the New York Times calling for world leaders to take serious action on climate change. Just months later, Trump appeared to have reversed his position in the wake of the cyber-theft and publication of scientists’ emails.

He told a Fox News presenter: “the memorandum or whatever it was that they found a few months ago was devastating, by the leaders of the movement of global warming. I think that was devastating because that basically said you people are a bunch of jerks to follow us and we’re just kidding. And I really think that was the beginning.”

Seriously, this Iggy character is basing his claim for hacking on timestamps. Doesn’t he know how easy it is to change the time shown by a computer (if I didn’t have my computers set up to synchronise with the local time standard their time could be up to 6 hours out in a week).

The other thing that makes this appear to be fake news is the Russian anti Trump rhetoric so loved by the Dems who are very upset by Trump being realistic about the global warming/climate change/what ever it’s called this week scam

A problem with groups like the global warming alarmists who keep repeating the same mantra and lies is eventually they might stick. It’s certainly working here in Australia. Otherwise why is it that we are one of the few nations who actually are carrying out their insane policies in full by shutting down our coal fired power stations and refusing to build new ones all in the name of reducing our emissions? Pretty much the rest of the build are busy building as many new coal fired power stations as possible along with many nuclear ones. It really makes me wonder if Australia is the dumbest nation of all. Who was it who said we are the clever country? If we ever were we are certainly not now by a long shot I’m afraid. The next few years will be very telling. We will see a great turnaround of public opinion when more and more coal fired power stations are destroyed by power companies, which in itself should be classified as an act of terrorism even under our own existing laws.

Donald Horne coined the phrase The Lucky Country as a criticism of Australia’s useless politicians.

We don’t have that much time. If we don’t stop destroying our coal fired power station in the next few years this nation is going to crash and burn. Small fires have already started in case you haven’t noticed. For example, as was shown yesterday the RBA is desperate in trying to pump up the economy. Cutting rates to record lows is not enough. The RBA backed up that fact by making the astonishing warning the PM he must do more to help the economy to move more in the right direction. I still have hopes for Morrison to act accordingly but I’m starting to wonder if my hopes are ill founded.

Infrastructure and decentralisation is the key to future prosperity, the RBA has told Morrison to act quickly and decisively.

Dams, coal fired power stations, more electric suburban trains with correctly sized car parks and high speed trains between major cities that are close to each other, such as Newcastle-Sydney-Wollongong. Pretty obvious to me for a rapidly growing population but not so to most politicians.

Dams and new coal fired power stations would be essential, along with satellite cities connected by a continental bullet train network.

From my understanding Japan wants the Newcastle-Sydney-Wollongong run, which would be expensive to build, but should get the tick for a fast rail at speeds of 200 kph.

They could widen the Inland Rail route from Brisbane to Melbourne with speeds of 350 or even faster, but that is of no value for decentralisation.

So I propose we recreate Willandra Creek and when the next big flood comes around late next year the Willandra Lakes will fill up.

It could be a sensitive theme park, experiencing what life was like 50,000 years ago in the Dream Time. Plenty of fish and fresh water, ideally situated for a satellite city.

Also the Sydney-Parkes-Mildura-Adelaide route could be VFT, which takes in Mungo National Park.

We have no reason to thumb our noses at being a quarry. We are actually very good at it.

The real problem is that we squander all the wealth on ourselves and hiring bureaucrats, not capital works and R&D. It started with Howard and Costello who wasted their mineral boom. Costello also has the dubious honour of selling our gold

        THEAUSTRALIAN
        11:00PM JANUARY 10, 2011
THE Reserve Bank sold most of the nation’s gold reserves more than a decade ago because the board believed its price would remain flat
They believed also the commodity would not play a role in a future financial crisis.

The decision to sell 167 tonnes of the bank’s reserves has cost the nation about $5 billion based on today’s soaring price of almost $1400 an ounce.

You can add another 2 bill to that 5 with today’s price over $2,000. BTW we haven’t bought an ounce since. Pete still thinks he was our greatest treasurer.

whilst I can see the route is possible, according to the map published on Polar Research, something seems off about this story which is in all the major MSM:

2 Jul: ABC: Arctic fox sets new record after walking from Norway to Canada in 76 days
    By Bridget Judd
According to researchers at Norway’s Polar Institute, the juvenile fox — which was fitted with a GPS tracking device — covered more than 3,500 kilometres in just 76 days, averaging 46km a day.
“We couldn’t believe our eyes at first,” Eva Fuglei of the Polar Institute told Norway’s NRK public broadcaster, according to the BBC…
According to the research findings, published in the Polar Research journal (LINK), the fox reached distances of 155km a day while traversing ice sheets in northern Greenland…
The second leg of the animal’s journey into Canada remains more of a mystery, however.
Its transmitter stopped working in February this year, and its fate remains unknown…

2 Jul: BBC: Fantastic Arctic fox walks 2,000 miles from Norway to Canada
Starting in Norway, in Europe, she travelled more than 2,000 miles across the Arctic desert all the way to Ellesmere Island in Canada, in North America…
They originally thought the fox might have been picked up by a boat, but soon realised that this was not possible.
“There are no boats that go so far up in the ice. So we just had to keep up with what the fox did,” said Eva.
The fox was being tracked as part of research by the Norwegian Polar Institute…
VIDEO: (PIC POLAR BEAR) WATCH: Why are thousands of species facing extinction?

“This is another example of how important sea ice is to wildlife in the Arctic,” said Norway’s climate and environment minister, Ola Elvestuen.
Ice sheets in the North Pole are an important way for species to travel – particularly during migration seasons.
Global warming and climate change have caused the ice in both the North and South Poles to shrink at a very fast rate…
“The warming in the north is frighteningly fast. We must cut emissions quickly to prevent the sea ice from disappearing all summer,” Elvestuen concluded.

Bill, there is a lot of interesting information contained in the article. I ask what investors will do when the end day arrives because based on the returns removing and replacing the wind turbines or solar system would cost more than the original investment’s return on investment?

“JP Morgan energy and utilities analyst Mark Busuttil said returns on a $55/MWh PPA — assuming the project was 80 per cent debt funded — would be around 11 per cent.

“We estimate that a wind farm costing $2,000/kW (kilowatt) with a $55/MWh offtake contract over the first 15 years, then reverting to a merchant power price of $75/MWh for the remaining 10-year life of the plant, would achieve a nominal internal rate of return of five per cent,” Mr Busuttil said.

“The risk is that all free cash flows for the initial 15 contracted years would go solely to debt repayment, and equity holders would only generate returns beyond the contracted period.”
In other words, equity investors would not see returns for 15 years. Even then, those returns would be highly dependent on volatile power prices which are more than likely tracking down as more supply is added”.

Of course it’s all made up nonsense, but we always knew that.

98% of all CO2 is dissolved in the ocean as it is 45 times more soluble than oxygen.

If the extra 50% of CO2 was man made, but as an estimate of total CO2 output from fossil fuels as alleged it represents 1/3 of 2% and that over 100 years.

So the allegation is that mankind’s annual 0.007% contribution to total CO2 by burning old plants is somehow dangerous and
will affect the Great Barrier Reef some how. Also this is CO2 which started life as CO2 before it became old plants.

Soon there will be dinosaurs roaming Sydney and giant Pliosauri in the harbour.

And there will be no coral or finches because of Climate Change and the failure of every living thing to adapt.

1 Jul: Financial Times: Chinese technology is crucial to cutting carbon emissions
The US-China trade dispute and efforts to freeze out the technology group Huawei in the US, Australia and, to a lesser degree, Britain demonstrate the fears aroused by China’s emergence as a highly competitive industrial power…

Without its development of wind and solar power over the past decade, the growth in production from renewables would not have taken place and the transition to a low-carbon economy would hardly have begun. The fact that solar and wind power are now competitive, without any need for subsidies, with other forms of energy is largely the result of the mass production of turbines and panels by Chinese companies…
As a result, China is leading the energy transition. And there is much more to come…

Under President Xi Jinping, China is using its skills, financial strength and political reach to become a global industrial power. The country’s wind and solar businesses began life as ventures created to take advantage of the lavish subsidies for renewables offered in Europe…

2 Jul: Scotsman: The proof that the private sector cannot secure just transition to green economy
by Richard Leonard (leader of the Scottish Labour Party, and Member of the Scottish Parliament for the Central Scotland region)
Leaving decisions about the transition to a net-zero carbon economy to the vagaries of the market will not work, so an interventionist role by governments is an absolute necessity, writes Richard Leonard.
The Extinction Rebellion movement serves as a timely reminder that protest is power, that non-violent direct action is an important part of the democratic process and that the climate emergency is the most pressing issue of our time and requires urgent action…

Businesses, particularly big business must play their part. That’s why, Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell announced last week that a Labour Government would hold those companies, which do not meet a minimum standard of commitment to the climate emergency, to account. He suggested that one sanction could be to delist them from the London Stock Exchange and so cut off their access to capital investment. This radical approach would ensure that the private sector is forced to play a meaningful part in creating a sustainable economy…

The best thing for the global economy will be when the Chinese credit/construction bubble pops and the Chicoms stop using 2000 million tonnes of cement and 1000 million tonnes of steel (half in construction) per year. Because running up total debt from $1 trillion in 2000 to $40 trillion plus now and building 68 million empty concrete shell apartments is, you know, not really sustainable. It’s central planning gone berserk.

After the bust, China can rebalance it’s absurd economy and become a less-polluted, better, more efficient place. And use less energy per unit of GDP while improving living standards and shifting the economy to services-bsaed growth.

12 Apr: TheCanary: On BBC Two, George Monbiot had the entire studio applauding the overthrow of capitalism
On comedian Frankie Boyle’s BBC Two show, columnist George Monbiot had the entire studio applauding the overthrow of capitalism. Explaining what we need to do to prevent climate catastrophe, Monbiot said:
Monbiot: “We can’t do it by just pissing around at the margins of the problem. We’ve gotta go straight to the heart of capitalism; and overthrow it.”

The man is spot on. Sitting governments are sleeping at the wheel, leading us towards climate catastrophe. In the UK, the current manifesto of the main opposition party – Labour – pledges to roll out local, publicly funded renewable energy firms across the country to rapidly decarbonise the economy. It’s a matter of urgency that we support this, as well as the type of direct action young people like the school strikers are taking.

30 Jun: Daily Mail: Left-wing ‘re-education camp’ is accused of training journalists to flood the BBC’s airwaves with pro-Corbyn commentators
•Pundits who have taken courses with New Economy Organisers Network (Neon) made more than 60 appearances on Corporation’s shows since January
•When they appear, they rail against the ‘mainstream media’ and traditional capitalism, and are taught how to ‘swerve’ difficult questions
•Commentators like Grace Blakeley, a member of Neon’s Spokesperson Network, are frequently booked on high-profile programmes such as BBC Radio 4’s Today
            By Glen Owen
Pundits who have taken courses with the hard-Left New Economy Organisers Network (Neon) have made more than 60 appearances on the Corporation’s shows since January…
The group’s board of organisers includes Sam Tarry, who organised Mr Corbyn’s leadership campaign…

Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell has personally endorsed the organisation. Neon boasts of ‘over 1,400 high-profile TV/Radio appearances’ in the past five years – with BBC outlets accounting for the majority of them.

Last night, the BBC faced calls from Chief Secretary to the Treasury Liz Truss to explain why it was seemingly co-operating with Neon’s propaganda push…
Truss: ‘It’s not as if the Corporation can be unaware as these commentators go on Twitter afterwards to celebrate their appearance.’…

25 Jun: Guardian The Long Read: The new left economics: how a network of thinkers is transforming capitalism
After decades of rightwing dominance, a transatlantic movement of leftwing economists is building a practical alternative to neoliberalism.
            By Andy Beckett
“We’re in a time when people are much more open to radical economic ideas,” says Michael Jacobs, a former prime ministerial adviser to Gordon Brown. “The voters have revolted against neoliberalism. The international economic institutions – the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund – are recognising its downsides.”…

“Economic power and control must rest more equally,” declared a report last year by the New Economics Foundation (NEF), a radical London thinktank that has acted as an incubator for many of the new movement’s members and ideas…

This ferment is beginning to solidify into a movement. The New Economy Organisers Network (Neon), a NEF spin-off based in London, runs workshops for leftwing activists, to learn how “to build support for a new economy” – for example, by telling effective “stories” about it in the mainstream media…

Looming over this activity is the possibility, for the first time in decades, of a Labour government receptive to new leftwing economic ideas. “[The shadow chancellor] John McDonnell seems to get it,” says Gordon-Farleigh, guardedly…
PIC: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez at a Green New Deal event in Washington DC, May 2019.

Instead, Labour have recently begun promoting a version of the Green New Deal: an enticing but still largely theoretical scheme advocated by steadily more leftists and environmentalists in Britain and the US over the past decade. It aims to address the climate emergency and some of capitalism’s problems simultaneously, by a huge increase in government support for green technologies and the highly skilled, hopefully well-paid jobs needed to create them…

14 Nov 2012: JoNova: BBC secret exposed: Greenpeace, activists, BP decide what “science” brits see — Hello TwentyEightGate
Oh the irony. The BBC, supposedly the public owned broadcaster, had a meeting with 28 climate experts in Jan 2006 where it decided on its policies on climate coverage. It led to the extraordinary move of the BBC abandoning any semblance of impartiality (a principle that’s so important it’s written into its charter). In the meantime, the BBC did everything it could to hide those influential experts names. It’s been nearly seven years since the seminar, but now we know why their names were top secret. No one is even pretending this was about “the science”. The BBC has become a PR wing of Greenpeace…

11 Jan 2018: Vice: The Radical Media School Training a Generation of Left-Wing Pundits
The New Economy Organisers Network is making sure critical voices reach the news
              by Casper Hughes
Founded in 2013, the New Economy Organisers Network (NEON) is dedicated to training up a new generation of media pundits to shift the national discourse on economic inequality, racism and migrants’ rights, as well as coaching organisers and connecting activist groups. Where, before, TV producers and commissioning editors might not have had the networks to find left-wing voices to talk on these issues, NEON’s training and infrastructure have provided a roster of experts ready-made for media appearances. Since its inception in 2014, NEON-trained spokespeople have made over 700 appearances on shows such as the Today programme, Channel 4 News and Sky’s Morning Papers…

Originally a part of influential left-wing think-tank, the New Economics Foundation (NEF), NEON was co-founded by Daniel Vockins, 32, as a reaction to “progressive causes losing across the board” in the wake of the financial crisis. From his experiences organising against the marketisation of education at the University of Sussex, to campaigning against climate change for organisation 10:10, Vockins came to believe that the left were fractured around single issue campaigns and needed to coalesce around broader, more systemic answers to the problems they were trying to solve. Moving onto the role of the Head of Campaigns in NEF, Vockins began working on a project called “The Great Transition”, where the seeds of NEON were planted…

Ashok Kumar, a lecturer in International Political Economy at Birkbeck University, a NEON trainee and a regular pundit on Sky News and the BBC’s World Business Report:
“On the BBC World Business Report they’ll ask me questions where the hegemonic terms of debate are this unalloyed commitment to profit and capital accumulation,” says Kumar. “But I’m often taking what they’re saying, pivoting and trying to get a political point across that isn’t completely left field, but is perhaps something more radical and outside the terms they have set. I’m perhaps able to get away with it, where maybe presenters would be a little harsher on elected politicians.”…

“billionaire investors… tackling climate… several feet of snow [sic]”. These singers and actors are a breed apart, are they not.

Meanwhile, over here (to paraphrase yarpos), our most-southerly council, appropriately named Southland, has resoundingly said NO!!! to this UN-induced mass-hysteria of declaring a cuckoo emergency whatever. When you live in one of the most coldest, rainiest, wild and windswept climates these islands have to offer, your awareness of the weather is an everyday natural thing – if you want to stay alive. However, someone who calls him/her/their/it-self idiot savant, today wrote (on a myPhone in a city café maybe?) –

        http://norightturn.blogspot.com/2019/07/climate-change-southland-doesnt-care.html

“Southland – land of coal-burning dairy farmers – has become the first region in the country [wrong again – second region] to explicitly vote against declaring a climate emergency. Their reason? They didn’t want to ‘devalue’ the word ’emergency'”. Sounds reasonable and fair enough to me, well thought-out and practical, and having once lived down there for 6 years, most locals I knew were eagerly looking forward to a little good old-fashioned global warming coming their way… needless to say, 20 years later, they’re still waiting. And in other psycho-crisis news:

        https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/national/393547/council-taken-to-court-over-lack-of-action-on-climate-change

“Thames-Coromandel Council voted six to three against the declaration in April, much to the dismay of [zombies!] who were at the meeting to lobby the council to take action and sign up… Local environmental group, Hauraki Coromandel Climate Action, has applied to the High Court for a judicial review and an order that the council’s decision be quashed… the group would be setting up an online fundraising campaign to help fund the legal action”.

What’s that old saying / excuse – it only takes a few bad apples [zombie activists] to ruin the whole country?

A comment regarding the blog a couple of days ago about green types objecting to the coal burner who has asked the Emissions Reductions Fund to pay for carbon credits if it upgrades its turbines and makes less CO2. There was a post a few days ago about an ABC program, probably Catalyst or something like that, about Aboriginals in the NT doing cool season burning to reduce the undergrowth and lower the risk of bushfires during the hot season. The cool season burning produces less CO2 than hot season bushfires and an oil company that provides funds, claims carbon credits for the CO2 reduction. I have seen something similar about 4 years ago. So it seems OK for an Oil producer to claim carbon credits but a coal burner can’t get funding to reduce CO2 production.

    O/T but possibly important.

The blogasphere is abuzz with the fact that VP Pence’s trip was cancelled just before or maybe take off for some domestic appointment. At the same time Putin and other world leaders made unscheduled changes to their itinerary.

At least 14 Russian sailors died in a submarine fire. My first reading said it was more a deep-diving research vessel with a titanium hull that had to travel on a mothership and had limited time underwater. This doesn’t sound like a nuclear vessel to me. Other reports involve a nuclear sub so maybe there were two incidents. Yet another report says a Russian sub was within US waters off Alaska which fired a torpedo at a shadowing US ship which was scuttled. I must stress that all this is just scuttlebutt.

Over to you Pat, what do you make of this?

I’m embarrassed having started this thread. The logical explanation is that when the news of the Russian sub being in difficulties broke, Pence, in the absence of Trump, returned to DC to authorise any assistance to Russia if requested.

      All is good. 🙂

I read that Quadrant article and it did nothing to allay a suspicion of mine that any finches sighted must have been bussed in, like “crowds” for leftist causes. They must have cried into their chardonnay watching REAL crowds in Hong Kong.

I’ve spoken of this before so I’ll be brief: Doing a “flyover” of the mine site on google earth does not indicate a haven for grass finches, it lacks both grass [its low scrub] and water. The mannikins I feed are constantly drinking while feeding. There is little to no water on Adani’s lease. If they put in an acre of seeding grass and a birdbath, any finches would love it.

have posted various stuff about New Economy Organisers Network (NEON) in this thread. figured they’d have a presence in Australia. haven’t looked far, but this stuff is from this year:

Global Messaging Program: Global Advanced Messaging and Narrative Program 2019
A course for communicators from North America, UK, Europe, Australia and New Zealand to gain the tools and experience to analyse, reframe, test and deliver more effective messages and narratives for progressive victories.
    Applications cose on March 30…
The program has been developed by Anat Shenker Osorio (USA) and delivered in association with Australian Progress (Australia) and the ***New Economy Organisers Network (United Kingdom).

Anat Shenker Osorio examines why certain messages falter where others deliver…
Anat delivers her findings packed in snark at venues such as the Congressional Progressive Caucus, Centre for Australian Progress, Irish Migrant Centre, Open Society Foundations, Ford Foundation and LUSH International.
Her writing and research is profiled in The Atlantic, Boston Globe, Salon, The Guardian and Grist among others.

    Global Messaging Program: About
The good news is that the facts are on our side. But those who win the narrative battles get to write the policy, so being correct is insufficient…
The program will kick-off with an opening workshop, 23-25 June in Melbourne, Australia to learn the basics of decoding language for greatest impact. While in Australia, participants also have the option to attend Progress 2019, a major Australian progressive conference, held June 20-21…

    Yee Haa!

Ben Davidson (Suspicious Observers) caught my attention with this paper this morning:
    https://arxiv.org/pdf/1907.00165.pdf

titled: No Experimental Evidence for the Significant Anthropogenic Climate Change J Kauppinen and P Malmi. 2019

    Take aways:
Low cloud cover controls practically the global temperature.
    Climate Sensitivity is 0.24°C
Because the low clouds control, there is practically no anthropogenic [contribution to] climate change.

    Thank you Ben.

The IPCC can pack up and go home.
We can tell the UN to push off!

I’m off to read the paper more thoroughly and look into the papers it references.

Following up on the media bias at the BBC and ABC highlighted here by Jo, a campaign has started to hold the BBC to account for its blatant bias through a judicial review. A crowd-funding appeal to fund the action has been launched. Its focus is on that the BBC’s internal processes to ensure impartiality are not robust or independent enough. Details of the case are on the Crowd Justice website: https://www.crowdjustice.com/case/stopbbcbias/.

All help, especially in helping to spread the message and support the action, gratefully received!
