Some days in Maitland are hotter than others.
Thanks to Ken Stewart, the tour through the Great sites of the Australian Bureau of Meteorology continues.
Once again, the experts have carefully graphed, diagrammed, checked and ignored all the things that shouldn’t be within 30 meters of a thermometer. See Maitland Site Info. That fence is described as “Galvanised iron”. The ground is bitumen. The incinerator is labeled “incinerator”. And there are two tanks just out of view to the right, not to mention the tin sheds, trees, buildings and wind breaks.
In 1967 the site only had two tin sheds within a 30 meter radius, which was still not compliant, but vastly cooler than present. The incinerator is about 6 or 7 meters from the Stevenson Screen, and only appears on the maps in 2014.
As Ken says “the site is a heat sink”. It’s not an official “ACORN” star site, but records here get mentions in the media. Worse, Maitland is one of the sites used to adjust official ACORN data in Adelaide, Cape Borda, Ceduna, Kyancutta, Port Lincoln, and Snowtown.
Ken has also looked at Eudunda, Meningie, and Warooka this week. Anyone happening to be driving past Warooka post office? Please send us a shot to admire from out the back. The screen’s not visible from the street.

If people want to send in more site photos, start at the BoM page for Climate Data Online. Type in the town, and “Find” the nearest site. On that site’s page look to the top right for a button marked “Details” to find out the lat and long. You can enter them in Google Maps as: 34.3745S, 137.6733E (for example). If you visit a site, please respect the privacy of any homeowners, don’t share street addresses or car number-plates publicly. Email me: joanne AT this site domain.
Ken Stewart blogs at Ken’s Kingdom: The Wacky World of Weather Stations! Go thank him.
Only logical that an ACORN site 1676Km away would move in lock step with the use of that incinerator ,after a brain aneurysm.

Maitland is a small town ~1200 people on the Yorke peninsula in SA.
It is surrounded by rural and farming lands
So there is an abundance of alternative potential better sites within 1-2 ks.
Why has the BOM allowed this non compliant site to continue ?
Seems to me that BOM does not care.
BOM is only interested in it’s false
BOM World
To misinform us.

Thanks Bill. I did make a silly mistake and mixed it up with Maitland N.S.W.
My own brain fail. Still a hopeless site.
60
Not that 445kM makes a good comparison with hot tarmac anyway.
70
Yes, funny how other states pinched SA place names: Maitland (NSW), Mount Barker (WA), Gladstone (Qld), Augusta (WA) (well nearly!).
30
Eh? Augusta in WA was established in 1830 and named after Prince Augustus Frederick, Duke of Sussex. Port Augusta was established in 1852 and named after Augusta Sophia Lady Young, the wife of the SA Governor.
60
I was joking about Augusta which in a news report in January was credited with Port Augusta’s highest temperature in Australia last summer.
30
The unusual one is Mount Barker, both locations named after the same gent Captain Collet Barker, who must have travelled a bit. Mount Barker WA was named in 1829 and Mount Barker in SA a year later.
50
Yes and he was unable to travel any further, being speared to death there.
20
He was speared at the mouth of the Murray river actually while exploring.
That location is roughly 80 ks. away from the town of Mt Barker.
But before his death he sighted the summit of the mountain now named Mount Barker.
The town was named in his honour a little later on.
40
He was mistaken for a sealer. They were a fairly lawless bunch prone to kidnapping local women.
40
Thanks for clarifying that Bill. I must not have been paying close enough attention in my Grade 4 Social Studies class!
20
I call this Local Heat Contamination or LHC. It is probably far greater than UHI.
260
No urban site is suitable period. These sites are not worth the price of the temp sensor thats in them.
100
I’d say the way this LHC exceeds any UHI will cause a spike larger than the Seattle Space Needle…..
90
With all the funding BOM gets, why hasn’t a system of stations similar to USCRN been established.
I suppose that with all their rubbish data, it gives them more to “adjust”.?
Seems that the very last thing they want is a dataset of reliable untainted temperatures.
280
Andy:
Data from Maitland is used to “adjust” figures from Pt. Lincoln, Ceduna and ADELAIDE.
Data from ADELAIDE is used to “adjust” figures from Pt. Lincoln, Ceduna (and a few others).
Guess which way the temperature is adjusted?
That incinerator might explain the mystery of Adelaide’s RECORD temperature last summer. It was set in-between readings 20 minutes apart, and involved a fast climb up, then down again. Nearby stations neither reported a corresponding rise or fall during those times.
The whole thing has always involved circular reasoning; CO2 is going up, so the temperature must be going up. If it looks like not doing so, use adjustments from other sites. And if the Maitland incinerator isn’t working, why not add in Coober Pedy or Marble Bar?

These guys are paid fooligans. I would expect more from this Prof of Evolutionary Biology, who should know better that CO2 is the ‘life’ gas and isnt a pollutant and we require MORE of it. So where are they coming from? Most stupid irrational statements (see article) and complete science hogwash.

Who needs make-believe TV detective/drama programming when we’ve got Jo and Bill and Ken’s real life citizen research detect-and-denounce team on the job. Excellent work, fellas!
Back in ’85 I was a postie in Kalgoorlie, WA for 6 months (making $ for a surf trip to Indo & beyond and getting paid to get fit at the same time) and out the back in the carpark was a Stevenson screen. When all this cooked temp schemozzle surfaced recently, I wondered if the post office location was still active or if it had been shifted (it’s now at KAL/Boulder Airport on the southside of town). Thanks to Jo’s link above, I found:
http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/averages/tables/cw_012039_Info.shtml
This Kalgoorlie P.O. site was active from 1896 until 31 December 1953 (the instrument shelter was still there in 1985). Think the P.O. today is now a hotel and commercial offices (still in the original architectural masterpiece of a building). Hope this info helps.
130
Now that we know where the BOM hides
It’s own info about it’s weather station sites
We can all go have . a look
Either in person
Or via Google Earth
Which is real nice
As I don’t like Google ( =Goggle ! )
But here we can use it for a very important purpose
Examining how wrong the BOM has been misleading us.
50
Don’t know . . . . it looks like the perfect site, depends on what you’re trying to do. 🙂
That photo says more than a thousand words!
60
When the author captions the Tarmac as Car park does that mean there are potentially dozens of cars with hot engines, hot exhausts coming and going all the time within feet of the thermometer?
Tonyb
170
From the BOM sketch pan of the site
Probably only 4-5 Post Office staffers cars at any one time.
But yes enough to make an impact
On both the minimum daily temperatures
And the maximum daily temperatures
80
Another killer weather station. Because false claims of anthropogenic global warming kill people due to energy poverty and reduced “low carbon” agricultural output.
Badly sited weather stations are dangerous killers and that’s not a joke!
130
Some way to go David, before collapsing agri output.
IGNORE CLIMATE HYSTERIA: WORLD GRAIN CROP SET TO BREAK RECORD
“ … the global wheat out turn is seen at a record, while maize is placed at the second largest ever and barley at the highest in a decade,” the report said.
80
There must be a way of organising a BoM audit before its too late.
“If we don’t take action, then in 12 years we will have to explain why the world hasn’t ended and come up with a new number,” one UN scientist warned.
“This is a very serious threat, and we urge everyone to hand control of the economy to the government immediately before we have no more time left to change the timeline again.”
161
el gordo, your quotes are from the Babylon Bee, a satire site…
30
Thank you sir, this being a satirical blog I saw no harm.
31
In a religion like man made Global Warming faith is needed. If you believe then you do not need facts like temperature. You just need faith.
130
And if you haven’t got enough faith, the BoM will supply a higher figure.
110
Also it’s not that this site means a slightly wrong temperature at this site. Thanks to glorious homogenization other sites are changed. They set Australia’s temperature and in turn the temperature of the Southern Hemisphere. That has cost Australians (not the government) $6bn a year
150
That loss is just the directly measurable overcharging for electricity.
The other less acknowledged cost has been in the closure of manufacturing, the curtailment of regular farming by induced water shortages and the situation where even offices have been unable to cope with exorbitant electricity bills.
When even our office work needs to move overseas we are really in trouble.
But all that doesn’t matter, governments can just borrow more from overseas to pay the social security payments.
KK
120
How much feedback is induced by a badly sited station leading to homogenisation of others? E.g. this invalid site will induce neighbouring sites to be “adjusted” upward and then it’s seen that this site which was traditionally higher (because of bad siting) is the same as the others and therefore it will have to be further upwardly adjusted to reestablish its traditional higher readings.
There could be an infinite feedback loop.
And don’t forget that the process of “homogenisation” by the imbeciles at BoM is a closely guarded TOP SECRET. It is certainly not a science like milk homogenisation invented by Auguste Galvin in 1899.
160
When global cooling is so obvious by 2030 history will show that the BOM,CSIRO, ABS/SBS were culpable. Instead of acting for the good of other Australians they conspired directly or by wilful neglect to do their jobs. They are the real villains.
The banks and businesses and universities are simply opportunists. It is the biggest ripoff of Australians in our history. The precautionary principle is a made up excuse for theft.
241
TdeF You omitted
The Australian Brainwashing Corporation !
ABC.
120
Typo. Sorry
70
I think as the cooling sets in more obviously than it now, supposed “global warming” will still be blamed.
I already see Leftards blaming “extreme weather” on Globull Warming.
100
I do not accept all the retired scientists appearing and belatedly proving it is nonsense. They knew that for 30 years. Where was the courage of Peter Ridd? Why haven’t the 500 people of the BOM stood up and protested. Especially against Gillard’s absurd Climate Council. How many scientists have stayed silent? Cowards.
210
Tdef
, they are ordinary people
With mortgages, families,
Who do not want to uncertainty
And difficulties
That would inevitably come if
Dared to be different.
Peter Ridd is a glorious exception.
And arn’t we lucky he lives !
110
I understand all that. I sympathize. In fact I know one Vice Chancellor on over $1million a year. Who would put that at risk for telling the truth? How many are silent? Where is the morality? Or is the money the point of all this? How many go along with it when it is not their problem?
150
Or do they rationalise that it’s not their problem anyway?
70
Uncertainty’s coming anyway, if the soi disant masters of the universe win this precariously poised contest, massive and unprecedented loss of life is the most likely outcome, plus serfdom for the survivors. So the cowards will go down regardless. It’s not going to just peter out by vain hope and keeping one’s head below the parapet.
20
I’m certainly not going to buy the book.
40
Which book Keith ?
30
Dr Rex Fleming has a PhD in Meteorology and spent years at NOAA, as he said involved with climate research from the beginning, and responsible for funding scientists who “pushed” the theory of man-made global warming. He’s written a book called The Rise and Fall of the Carbon Dioxide Theory of Climate Change (2019) and has just done a podcast with James Delingpole.
80
But that looks like it might be worth it.
After all it is his personal story
Of how he LOST his faith
In the Global Warming
Religion.
50
I was responding to the comment made by somebody else that too many scientists have gone quiet in their jobs. A complete contrast to Peter Ridd.
Actually I’d prefer to donate to Peter Ridd to fund him in writing his book.
50
Actually so will I Keith
But I will put in a request to the local library that they buy it.
🙂
50
‘How many scientists have stayed silent? Cowards.’ Yes !
20
In addition..possibly blackmail…

It’s greatly appreciated having all this information made available to readers & believers in your blog but this needs to be made very public. The media are inlikely to cooperate so please try TV.

Thegreater Public must be made aware of the BOM [Snip legal]!

In the last 24 hours I’ve been contacted by one current M.P. and a former prime ministerial advisor. Let’s just say, people are noticing, and with help, there will be action.
It will make it even more effective if people write in — to letters pages in newspapers, and to local radio, and to their MP. Group thinkers are unnerved, though they will not admit it, when a big group thinks differently to them. And MP’s get either less confident of the BoM expertise, and more confident in their right to expect answers.
Thanks to anyone who won’t let this sit unchallenged.

Jo, Ken has only looked at South Australia
There is a lot of territory to cover yet.
And as Ken is only checking whether the BOM’s weather stations
Comply with it’s own guidelines,
I’m thinking of looking at the actual temp records of each over time,
As Ken judges each of them.
Then we will be able to SEE the impact
Of this failure to meet their own guidelines
Via the recorded false temperatures.
Any thoughts ?
10
“Is that today’s temperature or did you get it from the BoM?”
180
Interesting web page. What do you think?
http://www.warwickhughes.com/cru86/
50
Interesting, David. I waded though it all. Quite dense, poorly organised and laid out. Info content appears okay and is referenced/linked … though the implications and explicit observations seem considerably less clear. emoting bias appears evident …
50k is indeed not a “large city.”
1mil+ – mega: Philly, Houston, The Big Three (NY/LA/Chi)
500K to 1mil – large: San Fran, DC, Boston, Vegas
250K to 500K – medium: Sacramento, Minneapolis, New Orleans, Omaha
under 250K – small: Beaumont, Boise, Birmingham, Jackson, Reno, Akron
BUT….
If you live in Australia or NZ, large – Auckland (1m) Medium – Wellington, ChCh, Hamilton & Dunedin (>100k), and the rest, well they are just large towns by US standard (city in NZ is >20k).
I think we can safely safe Jones had in mind US and UK city sizing.
50
We have seen several examples of non-compliant weather stations and we have had discussion of how the temperature data is homogenized. The BOM also (jointly with CSIRO) manages the Cape Grim Site which also measures atmospheric CO2 levels. How do we know that the Cape Grim site and any other similar sites in which BOM are involved are compliant, in other words how do we know that the CO2 levels are not also homogenized.
150
I now don’t trust any data produced by the BoM. It’s the only way to be sure. And we now know that they are destroying raw data records as has been reported on this site.
100
They had better not do so. Those records belong to the Australian people (through the Government) and millions have been spent obtaining them. They would leave themselves open to charges of Wilful destruction of Government property, Theft, and Obtaining money with false pretences.
170
I have tried to give you a green thumb Graeme.
But the function is not working.
Neither is the red thumb function
40
They went to a lot of trouble to get it right in the first place, so its probably kosher.

30
That was before 1984 before “climate science” was done to suit particular political objectives.
60
You will be aware that Graeme Pearman was regarded as a ‘greenie’ and a rift opened up in the organisation. In his retirement Brian Tucker raised red flags about the direction CSIRO was taking and he joined the Lavoisier Group.
Clearly the rot set in when Pearman became head honcho.
90
The “Leftards’ have acknowledged the likelihood of cooling, only they regret it won’t be as severe because of the the warming.

O/T yet same-same: it would appear Greenland’s planet-flooding heat wave is done-and-dusted (only lasted 3 brief days). After a flirt with 0˚C thanks to that wandering jet stream via North Africa, the summit station has plunged back down to -14˚C (7˚F). Last 7 days stats here:
http://www.summitcamp.org/status/weather/
Also, midday satellite image [00:00 UTC] of globe with Aus lower-centre. West Oz has warm, stormy nor’westers while the east coast has coolish southerlies clearing: so the ‘average’ of that, I guess, is what we’d call ‘weather’.

Aust BOM online data usually shows the temperature and the apparent temperature. The apparent temperature is usually lower (about 99.99% of the time), and is affected by other weather elements such as wind and the higer the wind speed the lower the apparent temperature. So for somewhere like Greenland, if the temperature reaches 0˚C and there is a 50 kph wind blowing, the apparent temperature will probably be about -20˚C, hardly going to cause the planet to flood.
40
For some ‘climate scientists’, these UHI inflated temperatures are having a deleterious effect.

2 : Why the farrck should we stop demanding competence from BOM just because of what some bloody foreigners in the USA think
(NB : No personal insult intended to any USA folk commenting here ) That’s the old old incompetent ‘Argument from Authority” line. And it’s complete BS.
3: I wonder does this Berkeley mob use BOM’s incompetently gathered data to create it’s argument ? If it does then it’s all circular mate + going round & round in tiny circles
4: When are YOU going to actually admit, as an Australian helping to fund the BOM each day, that the BOM is NOT competent. And wasting our money.
BOM is spreading misinformation
And creating it’s own bloody “BOM World” at our expense.

110
From 1880 to 1940 temperatures in Australia were flat and from that time there was a steady increase.
Keep in mind that the 1950s and 1960’s were cool decades in the NH, its a mini bipolar seesaw.
We can rely on the data because it was collected by Tucker.

https://www.netweather.tv/forum/topic/33968-the-severe-winter-of-1890-91/
Newcastle (NSW) and the UK both experienced a cold air outbreak in roughly the same year. Blocking is implicated in both hemispheres.
30
Now that puts paid to the theory that
The Weather is only now unstable
Because of high CO2
A new Theory is needed !
Maybe the weather has always been unstable
40
The Holocene has been fairly stable, but during cold regimes weather becomes chaotic.
30
Maybe EG
I suspect that is an assumption
Based on a lack of substantial evidence
from the folks who lived at the time
For example the Romans & Chinese .
( to name but two civilisations )
Had no way of measuring temperature.
No thermometers at all.
But we do.
And so it has become
An occasion for worriting.
40
The Holocene has been relatively stable, even the LIA in Europe saw temperatures fall only by a couple of degrees.
Precipitation is more important as a temperature control knob (being the most abundant greenhouse gas) and CO2 has no part to play.
We can gauge what temperatures and weather were like during the MWP and RWP through proxies.
40
Mr Fitz
‘In the last 7 and 30 days, there were more US record lows than highs. The heat wave in what has been a cool and wet spring and summer was intense but brief and mainly notable for the elevated nighttime temperatures.
‘That nighttime warmth is consistent with the very wet first 6 months of 2019. Water vapor is by volume by far the most significant and potent greenhouse gas. Note the large number under HIGH MIN the last 30 days. There were also more DAILY and MONTHLY record lows than highs year to date.’

Greg in NZ – comment #17 – brought up Greenland.
BBC OS talks to Greenlanders.
first Greenlander: biggest problem is the uncertainty of the weather. but people are flexible. they adapt. just beginning to consider CAGW.
second Greenlander: ***Aka Niviana, writer about CAGW. happy to speak of CAGW, but she also talks about adapting. asked her age – 24. BBC asks if young people in Greenland are more concerned about CAGW than older people. no, says Aka.
at end of segment, it’s on to Sierra Leone “massive flooding” in the capital Freetown – extreme rain.
Greenland segment 41min44sec-49min:
AUDIO: 52min59sec: 2 Aug: BBC World Service: OS
And Greenland’s ice sheet has been melting at near-record rates, losing 11 billion tonnes of surface ice to the ocean in just one day. It’s because of weather conditions that also brought a heatwave to Europe. We find out how this is affecting residents of the island.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/w172wrvn3r9c819
just a coincidence BBC would speak to Aka Niviana?
13 Sept 2018: Guardian: High ice and hard truth: the poets taking on climate change
Greenland poet Aka Niviana’s way of life is disappearing as her country thaws, while the subsequent meltwater threatens Kathy Jetnil-Kijiner and her fellow Marshall Islanders thousands of miles away. Their joint trip to the melting glaciers inspired a climate call to arms.
by Bill McKibben
High up on a melting Greenland glacier, at the end of this summer from climate hell, two young women shout a poem above the roar of the wind. Aka Niviana, grew up on the northern coast of Greenland; as its ice inexorably thaws, her traditional way of life disappears…
Both are climate activists, and both have raised their voices in service of their homelands.
Jetnil-Kijiner, 30, has been at it for years – she’s performed her work before the United Nations General Assembly and the Vatican. Niviana is newer to activism – just 23, she recited a poem at a recent Copenhagen climate protest, where she met a well-known glaciologist, Jason Box, and he, in turn, organised the complicated logistics of this glacier expedition…
PIC: ‘Hoping to rouse more of the world to action’ … Jetnil-Kijiner and Niviana in Greenland with Bill McKibben Photograph: 350.org.
We’ve come with a video crew to the remote fjords of southern Greenland…
Jason Box says there’s no doubt they’re both correct: all told, Greenland has enough water frozen on its rocky mantle to raise the sea by seven metres…
This science is uncontroversial. But science alone can’t make change, because it appeals only to the hemisphere of the brain that values logic and reason. We’re also creatures of emotion, intuition, spark – which is perhaps why we should mount more poetry expeditions, put more musicians on dying reefs, make sure that novelists can feel the licking heat of wildfire.

Poetic truths versus naychur’s truth? Well no. At the risk of a little heaviness, need to recognise that reality, evolution and ideas all have the same forms and logic is the formulation of the forms. I’ll have you know, Jo, that our Bureau of Meteorology is on the cutting edge of technology, and has been since their very beginning. Measurement technology that was pioneered by the BoM was not used elsewhere in the world sometimes for up to 60 years. Take the BoM rain gauge at Mt Cotton West just south of Brisbane.
http://www.bom.gov.au/clim_data/cdio/metadata/pdf/siteinfo/IDCJMD0040.040141.SiteInfo.pdf
Using the BoM’s meticulously created and carefully maintained station site database, you can clearly see in the Site Equipment History list on page 9 that the exact height of this station above mean sea level is 148m and its horizontal location is known to an error no more than 4m. This position was determined in 1915.
The method used to determine that position, in 1915, was the Global Positioning System.
Our BoM was using the GPS 60 years before the USA even invented it, that’s how far ahead of any other country they are in precision climate measurement.
And you know what? Since the end of the paper era the station data is only getting better:
Any occasional error would be noticed and fixed within, say, 20 years of the mistake being made. Probably.
Why so cynical, Jo?

(Yes I’m making a mountain out of a molehill because it’s funny.)
The holy grail of climate measurement, global coverage satellite troposphere temperatures from 1850 onwards, is surely now within reach of our BoM.

ends with Robyn Williams: patterns everywhere showing the same thing. the world is changing fast.
AUDIO: 7min10sec: 3 Aug: ABC The Science Show: Robyn Williams: Field sound recordings show ecosystems changing fast
A 60-minute cassette tape was once the limit. Now there is practically no limit. The Cornell Lab or Ornithology has developed recording devices for the field which can record for 3 months straight…
As Aaron Rice explains, the hundreds of hours of recordings from remote locations are then analysed by computers to reveal the ranges of all sorts of animal species. These ranges are changing fast as weather systems shift and the Earth becomes hotter.

Robyn Williams has been pushing propaganda for soooooo long now.

Now I simply don’t bother.
He’s not even on my radar as a credible science journalist.

Why are people you now disagree with now communists ?. He simply talks about science, unless you’re saying (God forbid) that all science has gone to the red side ?.

Michael. I have his autobiography on the shelf here: “And now For Something Completely Different”. I made a mistake. It was his father who was the Communist party member and for some years an employee of the Soviet sponsored “World Federation of Trade Unions”.
William’s book is an entertaining read. But it also makes very clear Robyn Williams everlasting dissatisfaction with normal society and his belief in the need for changing it along socialist lines. His ABC Science Show expresses this in almost every program

Except thats not happening. There is not a single location in the world that shows anything other than very small changes in an average against a long term average. The vast majority of the time in the vast majority of places the temperature at any random time is indistinguishable from the temperature pre-Climate Change. All this week for example the UK has been the “same” temperature as 100 years ago.

30 Jul: Oxford Research Group: Silent Spring to Strident Summer: The Politics of Global Heating
by Paul Rogers
(Paul Rogers is Oxford Research Group’s Senior Fellow in international security and Professor of Peace Studies at the University of Bradford. His ‘Monthly Global Security Briefings’ are available from our website)
Summary
This briefing tracks the evolution of the ecological movement since the 1960s and of scientific and direct action to respond to the catastrophic threat of climate breakdown. While the issue has largely overcome concerted, well-funded opposition to move from a niche concern into the global scientific and political mainstream, systemic political and economic blockages remain to achieving rapid decarbonisation…
Introduction
Three months ago ORG published a briefing, Tipping to Rebellion: Action and Reaction on Climate Science, one of a series of publications on the theme. It analysed two major trends and explored their political significance. One was the increased urgency of the issue as frequently highlighted by climate scientists and the other was the upsurge in public reaction as expressed by the Extinction Rebellion movement and by the youth activism inspired by the Swedish student Greta Thunberg.
In summary, the briefing argued that…

AUDIO: 29min12sec: 4 Aug: ABC Rear Vision: Keri Phillips: Counterculture – the environment movement
Australian environmentalists – although they weren’t called that – had been active since the 1860s but during the nineteen sixties and seventies they got carried along by the so-called counter-cultural movements that swept the western world…
And it was a period when the movement to protect Australia’s rich environmental heritage – both natural and urban – shifted from polite, backroom persuasion to sometimes violent confrontation in bush and city.

AUDIO: 28min48sec: 28 Jul: ABC All in the Mind: Turn on, tune in
Turn on, tune in, and drop out … that was the catch cry of U.S. psychologist ***Timothy Leary in the 1960s. He was convinced that the psychedelic experience could be mentally therapeutic and even provide insights into consciousness itself. By 1966 psychedelics were demonised and banned but now—in controlled scientific settings—we’re seeing a psychedelic renaissance in mental health therapy. 26 Jul: ABC: Why Michael Pollan started taking psychedelic drugs in his 60s (and why you shouldn’t do it at home)
RN By Anna Kelsey-Sugg and Bec Zajac for Life Matters
Pollan, a US author and journalism professor at Harvard and Berkeley universities, became “intensely curious” about psychedelic drugs.
He spoke to people participating in clinical trials who were being treated for anxiety or alcohol addiction with psilocybin, the active ingredient in magic mushrooms.
Pollan says he was “so struck” by their transformations “after a single psychedelic experience”.
“In many cases they acquired a new perspective on their life,” he tells RN’s Life Matters (LINK 16min58sec AUDIO)…
“Their sense of themselves as an individual became much less separate from nature, from other people, from the universe.
“It made me very curious as to whether I could do a similar reset myself.”
Pollan, who also read research on the topic, then undertook a “reset” of his own…
Pollan, who was initially sceptical about the therapeutic use of psychedelics, is now convinced of its value…
“Psychedelics may be wasted on the young,” says Pollan, who has written about his experience and research in How To Change Your Mind…
Pollan believes his experience has helped him better understand what it is we’re made of — and made him feel more tightly tethered to the world around him.
“One of the really striking things about psychedelics is that they make you feel very interconnected with other things,” he says.

Surely warming will show up in even a small number of properly sited stations over a long time period? In other words, we do not need all these badly sited stations at all.
If we took the ten to twenty sites in each country that are absolutely correct in their siting and there was no trend, wouldn’t that tell us something?
Rather than pick out the bad ones, let’s find the ones we cannot complain about in the US, Australia, Europe, UK and see what they say.

Temperatures have been generally rising in fits and starts from 1695 .the temperature fluctuates throughout the record, but If the ipcc guide line for not exceeding 1.5 centigrade from pre industrial then Britain has exceeded it in the 1730’s 1820’s 1870’s 1930’s and the 1980’s on.
This bizarre benchmark of pre industrial places the start point in the little ice age,

I’ve said many times that I was raised to regard statistics without interpretation and context as piles of tripe, despite the modern tendency to swallow any stat quicker than a seagull scoffs a sick prawn. It beats me how anyone can regard a short-term min/max average as indicative of anything without knowing the weather and cloud conditions that produced it, the degree of UHI, the sobriety of the postmaster or lighthouse keeper, the different sensitivities and bugs of modern electronic systems etc etc. Even a long term average is suspect.
That said, even I was surprised by the difference in the air temp near a dark-coloured car and that over a patch of grass.

1 Aug: UK Telegraph: UK down to just four coal power stations as RWE closes Welsh plant
By Julia Bradshaw
The Aberthaw Power station was opened in 1971 and generates up to 1,560 megawatts of electricity, enough to power more than 1.5 million homes.
Its closure will leave Britain with just four coal-fired power stations, two of which are already earmarked to be converted into gas in the next two years.
The move marks another step in the Government’s bid to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net-zero by 2050 and to phase out coal completely by 2025.
It imposes heavy levies on companies that release pollution into the air to encourage investment in cleaner alternative fuels, such as wind and solar…

some deceptive reporting, as always:
VIDEO: 2 Aug: UK Independent: A 2014 climate change documentary imagined a weather report in 2050. Those temperatures are already being exceeded
Cities across northern Europe have seen record-breaking heatwaves in recent weeks
by Tom Embury
In 2014, a French television channel broadcast fictional weather reports envisioning temperatures in 2050.
Intended as a distant warning about the escalating threat of climate change, one clip featured high profile weather forecaster Evelyne Dheliat alongside a map showing summertime temperatures in France hitting highs of up to 42C.
But just five years later, real weather forecasts by Ms Dheliat show the future appears to have arrived decades early…
An image shared widely on social media following last week’s European heatwave shows a striking similarity between the fictional temperatures of August 2050 and the very real weather faced today.
Although the 2019 image was apparently taken from a weather report in late June, when France recorded its first ever 46C high, last week saw similar scorching temperatures, including in Paris, which saw its hottest day on 25 July…
In the fictional 2014 report, Paris is shown at 26C in the morning, before rising to 40C after midday. Last Thursday, the French capital hit a far more extreme 34C by 10am, before reaching its record 42.6C in the late afternoon.
The comparison between the present and 2014’s dystopian weather report was first made by French weekly L’Obs (LINK).
The unprecedented heat in France last week was mirrored across ***much of northern Europe, where one by one temperature records tumbled…
Although no single weather event can be directly attributed to climate change, climate scientists warn global carbon emissions make extreme heatwaves far more likely…

Pat
The high temperatures were caused by a heat plume coming from north Africa.that this happened in high summer obviously exacerbated the heat.
It is like when a king tide happens at just the time of high tide, combined with a low pressure just off the coast and wind from the worst direction piling up the waves.
Are you suggesting the position of the jet stream or the weather systems that funnelled the heat wave north was caused by co2.? If so please provide evidence.

It summarises the findings of seven years of work by a team of researchers, based at the University of Exeter’s IGov project, analysing energy governance within Great Britain (GB) and elsewhere…
1.3 A new governance framework…
At local level, IGov recommends the devolution of energy governance to local levels, in the form of a new statutory duty on local authorities, requiring them to produce a Local Transformation Plan. This Plan would require local areas to set devolved carbon budgets, with freedoms, flexibilities and funding provided from national government…
