During the June heatwaves in Europe NASA was studying the “Ecostress” of various cities.
The heat coming off Charles DeGualle’s Orly Airport’s runways is easily visible from space. (As are all the other ideal locations for putting climate change thermometers.) CORRECTED Charles de Gaulle airport runways are (I think) beyond the top right of the heat map.
h/t To AndyG
Hands up who thinks thermometers in 1880 were reading too warm? Anyone…
The shots were taken in the early morning:
They show how the central core of each city is much hotter than the surrounding natural landscape due to the urban heat island effect – a result of urban surfaces storing and re-radiating heat throughout the day.
he fact that surface temperatures were as high as 77-86 degrees Fahrenheit (25-30 degrees Celsius) in the early morning indicates that much of the heat from previous days was stored by surfaces with high heat capacity (such as asphalt, concrete and water bodies) and unable to dissipate before the next day. The trapped heat resulted in even higher midday temperatures, in the high 40s (Celsius) in some places, as the heat wave continued.
So these heat sinks have had all night to lose their extra heat yet here they are still radiating. Even at lunch time the next day.
Nice of them to mark the airports.
See Milan and Madrid below.
…
Detecting the Urban Heat Island effect does not seem to be part of the mission statement?
COSTRESS launched to the space station last summer and began collecting its first heat data just days after installation. The instrument measures variations of ground temperatures to within a few tenths of a degree, and it does so with unprecedented detail: It’s able to detect temperature changes at various times of day over areas the size of a football field. These measurements help scientists assess plant health and response to water shortages, which can be an indicator of future drought. They can also be used in observing heat trends, spotting wildfires and detecting volcanic activity.

Excellent work Jo. Hard to believe our governments can push so much disinformation.

Nice. Now try comparing the human body’s heat density versus the same volume for the Sun.
“The power output of the core of the Sun is about 276.5 watts per cubic metre — that’s almost three of the old 100W light bulbs. On a power/volume basis, it’s a lot less than your body emits (about 100 W) and around the same as a compost pile.”
https://www.abc.net.au/science/articles/2012/04/17/3478276.htm
So humanity is a far higher heat source than the sun!
We are heating up green minds. Its a catastrophe!
101
Geoff, where did you get that sun core figure from?
30
Disregard…Opps from that article NVM, Im not sure where they get it either. If I get time Ill check further.
20
As an thermal energy management engineer who did a stint as a solar project manager I can tell you that direct solar irradiance is 1000 W/M2. As you move further away from the equator you become less direct and the irradiance reduces, in Melbourne for example its 375 w/M2 average, less in winter more in summer.
I’ve never heard of irradiance being measured in watts per cubic metre and I don’t believe it is a relevant unit, certainly not a unit generally used in thermodynamics.
50
I rechecked that figure is lunacy. The TOTAL solar output is 10^36W over 4pi steradians. You can check http://hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu/hbase/index.html for the fusion energy in MeV per particle collision.

YES!!!!!
00
NO.

The sun provides basically ALL the energy for the planet.

And permit our public servants in government departments and other taxpayer funded organisations to release deceptive data.
90
But, but Nick Stokes over on WattsUp said there is no such thing as UHI…… and he was talking specifically about Paris.
LOL
100
Nick Stokes is an adept of contrary positioning on WUWT and is seldom shot down unlike Jo’s klutz of contrary positioning Peter Fitzroy.
21
No higher Temps shown for Charles De Gaulle?
32
It’s early morning.
70
The runways are clearly visible as narrow dark red stripes.
190
Jo is wrong – that is not Charles de Gaulle but Orly
20
Yep
10
Thanks to Gerry, Gary, Chris and to Climarco below for the correction. And to everyone else. Sorry. It is Orly indeed. I think Charles de Gaulle is slightly off the heat map to the top right, though a Parisian may correct me. Finally it is corrected.
10
‘The fact that surface temperatures were as high as 77-86 degrees Fahrenheit (25-30 degrees Celsius) in the early morning indicates that much of the heat from previous days was stored by surfaces with high heat capacity (such as asphalt, concrete and water bodies) and unable to dissipate before the next day. The trapped heat resulted in even higher midday temperatures, in the high 40s (Celsius) in some places, as the heat wave continued.’
So NASA admits the heat is stored in the asphalt, concrete and water bodies..So will they stop calling it a heat wave of all times?
81
That suggests there is a southerly wind which explains the hotspot north of the airport.
20
I wonder if the homogenisation of temperatures aids the scam by spreading some of the effect due to increasing urban heat islands to other areas.
150
Certainly does in Australia! (See for an example my current posts at kenskingdom.wordpress.com)
220
luv ya work, Ken 🙂

I SECOND THAT MOTION!! 🙂 🙂

Actually good point…the Ministry of Temperature Truth ( the BUM ) in theiry shoukd homogenize all temp signatures the same as Rutherglen….
After all, Comrades….we are all equal ( in temp )….but surely some temps are more equal than others?

That’s not Charles Dr Gaulle (which is NE of Paris). It could be Orly.

Not fixed yet despite Gary’s helpful comment.
Charles de Gaulle, I believe.

I’d like to see the London Heathrow data as this is Always used by the Met Office in claiming “record high temperatures”
150
I’d like to see the images of Australian cities
Adelaide
Melbourne
Sydney
Brisbane
Perth
etc etc
After all our wonderfull taxpayer funded Bureau of Misinformation has been suppressing this real information for yonks I suspect !
140
Good article but please check your facts: the arrow pointing at Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport is in fact Paris Orly Airport.
It of course does change the veracity of the heat island problem.
80
Well, it was “Orly” morning.
70
Or if ur from Noo Joyzee den it’s “oily” moynin – choo know waddam toykin’ about?
31
We should be able to see the burning bird shredders easily from space then….heat sig should be clear..
80
As has been frequently noted here, it is important to retain those airport thermometers. Density altitude is one of those insidious things that can ruin your flight. But use them for their intended purpose, which is real-time readings for pilots taking off, whose
wings respond to the temperature at the runway, un-homoginized by the 1200 square kliks around it.
130
And many small city airports
With not many flights in or our
( especially jet engine planes )
But with huge areas of grass
May be reporting the temperature accurately
30
Most small city airports have probably seen extensive development around them, with the grass turned to asphalt and buildings. I call this local heat contamination, rather that UHI. My conjecture is that this has added more warming to the record than UHI.
90
30 years ago I moved to the vicinity of a rural town of about 24,000 people. The small airport was out in the country, surrounded by fields. It handles no scheduled flights. It is now completely surrounded by malls, commercial building, housing developments, etc., with lots and lots of asphalt. It is a temperature reporting station. I am sure that all this local development has increased the average reported temperatures.
Some adjustments for UHI use towns with populations of less than 50,000. This ignores local heat growth, which is pervasive in many parts of the world, probably most.
110
David that might be true of the USA
But the scales of towns & airports is slightly less here in oz
With roughly the same area as the USA with 340 million people
Australia has just 24 million…
If you look at Ken’s Kingdom posts about wacky BOM weather stations, you will see a number of air port BOM stations.

The issues with lawns is that 30 years ago, we weren’t as precious with water and some would be watered in the middle of the day.

That’s surely going to bring the reliability of wind power back into sharp focus? I note that the Clean Energy Council are still trying to claim otherwise.
40
I’d like to see images/reports for ACORN stations in Australia:
Adelaide: inner eastern suburb of Kent Town. BoM provides list of all adjustments.

Hobart: Battery Point, an inner suburb of Hobart, about 1 km south of the central city. As would be expected of a central-city site, the site is quite enclosed with numerous buildings in the vicinity.
Melbourne: Moved on 2008. The Olympic Park site has substantially cooler temperatures, both maximum and minimum, than the previous site, with the differences most prominent on cool days in the warmer months, as winds from the southwest quadrant at the previous site passed directly over the Melbourne CBD.
Orbost: became the primary ACORN-SAT site in January 2006. It is more elevated than the town sites and has substantially higher minimum temperatures.
50
Hmm, adjustment of less than half a degree, but the UHI effects shown in those images appear to show temp differences up to 5 degrees.
60
PRECISELY !
And then they smear that basically unadjusted urban heat over non-urban areas that it shouldn’t apply to.
The Global Surface Temperature series IS A FARCE.
120
‘… Climate Change thermometer’
–
Very much a contemporary gadget.
80
The airport visible south of Paris is definitely Orly, not Charles de Gaulle. I am not sure the satellite image goes quite far enough north from the centre of Paris to show CDG airport.
30
No, I am certain it doesn’t or else they have some sort of cooling system to hide it. You can make out the Seine in the NW corner.
But notice the blazing red of the buildings by Orly. They are warehouses and markets.
10
It may interest readers to know that it was Luke Howard that first noticed the urban heat island effect in the early 1800′s in his book “The Climate of London” although he didn’t call it by that name.
You can see an annotated copy here:
https://www.urban-climate.org/documents/LukeHoward_Climate-of-London-V1.pdf
Perhaps BoM members could add it to their reading list?
140
The author of this recent Forbes article refers to this as ‘zombie theory’ because the scientists have already taken out the UHI. He also points out that the fastest growing heat is in the Arctic region where there are no cities.
https://www.forbes.com/sites/marshallshepherd/2019/05/06/urban-heat-islands-dont-explain-climate-change-heres-the-bigger-problem/#c1c7f694c265
Have the authorities around the world adjusted for UHI or is that an urban myth?
20
Smallish Arctic towns are very likely to be subject to progressive local heat contamination, due to rapid local development. Cities are not required.
90
The author of the article you refer to is the insufferably arrogant Dr Marshall Shepherd.
The man is deep in the NOAA and GISS.
As a counterpoint, these rotten orgnisations have demonstrably been engaged in temperature data vandalism of the highest degree. They are scientivists of the first order of Watermelon.
There is a wealth of illuminating and exposing information at, ‘Erasing America’s Hot Past‘ … an absolute must listen and share.
Data ‘adjustment’, data ‘elimination’ and outright data fabrication are the order of the day for NOAA / GISS. 50% of the US data sites are now computer generated modelled points.

Gale force sou’westers (windmills in lockdown or blown over!)
Is that true or did you read it on the BoM site?
20
hot is still hot,
UHI or not
ht/ billinoz
should everyone move to the country? Burke perhaps?
314
Are you talking about weather or climate?
70
Both, look at this way, the temperature is important to personal comfort, as it is to statistics. So if UHI is adding a degree or two, then that will add to the discomfort.
34
But it is used as part of the SCARE of AGW,
It is applied to large areas that it shouldn’t be.
THIS IS NOT GLOBAL WARMING
It is localised URBAN WARMING getting smeared across vast non-applicable areas.
It makes a total mockery of surface fabrications like GISS and BOM that are used to support the AGW alarmism.
Has there been much actually GLOBAL warming????
Almost certainly NOT
110
I do love a good worldwide conspiracy to artificially raise temperatures. But why, to suborn so many people and records over such a long time, would mean a large organisation with large resources. Therefore the payoff must be huge, dwarfing the profits from wind and solar.

The renewable white elephants alone involve a juicy payoff. As to resources, look at the scale of GeeUp just in Australia, its enormous funding and the unpaid footsloggers recruited from the ABC-perusing classes. Big money up top, cheap feet on the ground. That’s the way to fiddle the public mind, especially with the slave media (all of the MSM and most of the alt) solidly on-side, with some allowed left/right, red team/blue team tussling.
As to the real long-term motives of the manipulators, beyond the plunder, waste, confusion and fear-mongering…

The UK claimed record was from a site that is not part of the official chain of sites. I read that the MetO were checking the equipment so that they could claim a record but obviously ignoring the buildings all around that at best make it WMO grade 2. But should the BBC picture be correct, the open earth near it renders it WMO grade 4!
The German site was UHI infected and the French record turned out to be a ‘feels like temperature’ but the [snip] has made it into what passes for the minds of journalists and will be repeated ad nauseum.
30
Apart from the daytime heat that is absorbed by the concrete and asphalt, then re-radiated at night, what about the heat from all of the vehicle motors, air conditioners and electrical equipment in a city?
Another thing I wonder about. Given the massive increase of RF emissions in modern cities due to cellular phones and wifi networks, is there a non-negligible effect on the temperature in urban environments?
70
‘Given the massive increase of RF emissions in modern cities due to cellular phones and wifi networks’ heating due to these sources will be miniscule compared to other heat sources. In fact no heating, the far field power levels are minute.

This is all very important stuff.
And so to the executive summary which might be:
“After gazing at our navels for three very demanding months and many millions of dollars, we discovered that surprisingly, our navels remained in exactly the same location”.
For heavens sake. Just having several million people together in the one city is a Big factor. Each person gives out a minimum of 25 Watts of energy constantly, but more when active. In Sydney that’s a constant heat output of 100 million watts.
And then consider this, in humans about one quarter of this heat loss is from the head.
And that doesn’t include energy dumped into the city from cooking, cars and life in general.
Wow. Perhaps we need another study as we move in ever decreasing circles while gazing at our navels.

The thermometer induced Global Warming story never stops. Yesterday the news was that July 2019 was the hottest July in human history, by 0.004C. It beat something like 2014.
Yesterday, from Paris and Washington
“July was Earth’s hottest month ever recorded, coming in slightly higher than the previous warmest month, which was July 2016, according to data from the Copernicus Climate Change Service. This European climate agency said in a statement Monday that July 2019 was 1.01 degrees (0.56 Celsius) above the 1981 to 2010 average, “which is close to 1.2 Celsius above the preindustrial level as defined by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC),” the agency said in a statement.”
This article does not say that it beat 2016 by 0.004C. Anyone else would have written that they were identical, so no warming but that’s not the idea.
A reasonable person who saw 1.01 above 1981 and 1.2 above 1880 would have said that the world has wamred 0.19C in 40 years, but that’s not the idea.
70
All this ‘hottest ever’ is based around a steady growth up to 2010 and then a plateau of no change. The only way to spin this into rapid warming is this perpetual claim of records. If 2019 is only slightly higher than 2016, then 2017, 2018 were cooler but that was never the headline.
Besides, now that we have satellites, why are we bothering with backyard urban thermometers? And as Global Warming has stopped completely and CO2 has not, why isn’t that the end of the CO2 produced warming? Man made CO2 increase is demostrably false, but even CO2 produced warming is now self evidently history, from the same data used to support it.
100
And then today this terrible news
“Air turbulence is getting worse on flights because of climate change, with the jetstream becoming choppier since the end of 1970s, scientists have found.
“The University of Reading has discovered that the jetstream has become 15 per cent more affected by wind shear in the upper atmosphere over the North Atlantic since satellites began observing it in 1979.
Over the same period the number of passengers and crew getting seriously injured from turbulence globally has doubled from one in a million to two in a million – meaning around 8,000 people a year are now impacted.”
Anyone else would have noted that air travel has exploded since 1980. Even the world’s population has doubled. There are more planes, more airports, more routes, more flights, longer flights and to more places. Anyone else would have looked at accidents per km flown and found it has dropped dramatically. Wind shear incidents per flight not total. But in the world of Global Warming, Climate Change, supporting a disaster scenario caused by the change from ‘preindustrial’ CO2 levels is the problem, the entire problem. Be afraid of flying. Tax flying. Stop flying. Unless for a Climate Conference by Hollywood or the IPCC.
130
The propaganda purpose in referring to these simple heat maps as “ECOSTRESS” is to imply that there is something unnnatural or dangerous about all this. It’s just a heat map showing exactly what one expects from the very real and undisputed-by-genuine-scientists (not “scientists” from the climate “science” division of “political science”) “urban heat island” effect.
90
The very name “ECOSTRESS” itself is placed to make a normal heat sample look like something to worry about to the uninformed masses.
20
What NASA could do as an encore is to do a temperature sampling on places like mount Yasur and compare it with a large city.
And do it over 24 hours and then 365.25 days.
KK
30
Has anyone worked out how to get Australian data from Ecostress? It’s supposed to be accessible from USGS Explorer, but the instructions are not that easy to follow. The ISS track map shows the station covers Oz ok, and there will be occasions when its passage might show UHI effects such as those above. I did some UHI research back around 2002 but could only produce microclimate comparisons, eg identifying built environment where the effect was extreme.
40
Given that we can no longer trust BoM or other government agency weather data I think we need to establish our own crowd source weather data which can be compared to “official” altered data. It will give is an idea of the magnitude of the “corrections” being applied to original temperature data.
Thoughts?
60
We are paying $500Million a year for the BOM. Over $1,000Million for the CSIRO. $1,500Million for the ABC/SBS.
We could demand honesty.
100
We could, but that’s not going to happen because the Sheeple are too dumbed down.
71
As with children the threat is enough. We could build a new coal power station every year with this money. The ones Graham Lloyd in the Australian called ‘traditional’. Not described as cheap, reliable, commandable, more than adequate, weather proof, perpetual but ‘traditional’. It’s a way of avoiding stating the truth.

These ‘heat’ photo’s are very informative and really put true global warming into some perspective. It’s all stored up heat that can’t dissapate naturally. And it covers hundreds of square kms. Of course it gets ‘stinking’ hot in these places !!
GeoffW
70
And most humans live less than 2 metres above the ground, so what matters to them is heat close to the ground. It’s much colder even at 100 metres. And the ground is always dry and hot in cities without wind, with reflected heat, with stored heat. Satellites only should be used. However even with all the current technology, the disaster news yesterday about the hottest July on record was a difference of 0.004C from the previous hottest July, which was not the year before or the one before that. So why bother? There is no warming.
100
Yep, most people have no idea there is even a lapse rate.
10
We need science from real scientists not political “scientists”.
70
You mean non govt payout/handout non-fake-pseudo scientists.
20
Those images prove man made global warming AND it is due to burning carbon and hydro-carbon fuels as well as nuclear reaction simply due to the heat release. If the temperature readings were taken away from populated areas there would be no detectable warming. Actual GLOBAL temperature increase in the last 70 years, if any, is within the measurement error.

Thats why I think ALL urban temperature sites should be abandoned or ignored..but…thats not what THEY do is it.
These sat scans are pretty obvious whats going on.
Another is the discrepancy between land and SEA which is totally ignored as land ONLY is used ‘prove’ warming (usually). The sea temp is warmest directly below the sub solar point (seasonal) plus lag. On the global sat data you can easily see the global hot spots where there is little oceanic circulation due to continental blocking. Sahara, India, southern US etc.

of course, Govt population policies are conveniently guaranteeing future AGW:
QLD population: Brisbane heading to Sydney size by 2056
Courier Mail – 7 Aug 2019
It shows that under a “business as usual” scenario the greater Brisbane population would nearly double from 2.5 million to 4.8 million by 2056 with most of the growth in the outer suburbs, which would grow from 1.9 million to 3.8 million people…
7 Aug: Bendigo Advertiser: Regional Australia Institute report believes regional city populations could swell in the next 40 years
by Chris Pedler
Bendigo’s population could potentially climb above the 500,000 mark by 2056 according to a new report from the Regional Australia Institute.
The report – titled Regional Population Growth: Are We Ready? – looks at the economic consequences different population scenarios could on metropolitan and regional areas of the country…
If current settlement patterns continued as usual in Victoria, Bendigo’s growth would grow from 110,446 in 2016 to 223,805 in 2056.
Moderately diverting expected growth from metropolitan areas to regional cities would mean Bendigo’s population could hit 360,278 in 2056.
A high amount of diversion from metropolitan areas leaves Bendigo with a forecast population of 530,232…
The Regional Australia Institute extrapolated data from the Australian Bureau of Statistic and the Victorian Government to make the forecasts on the regional areas of Greater Geelong, Greater Bendigo, Ballarat, Latrobe City, Shepparton, Warrnambool and Albury-Wodonga…
“Australia’s population is set to grow by up to 19 million by 2056, with the Sydney and Melbourne to hit megacity status in the next few decades. Brisbane and Perth will grow to the size of Sydney and Melbourne today.”…
In total population in the Victorian regional cities listed in the report could go from 710,000 in 2016 to up to 3.4 million people in the dispersed high-growth scenario…

And it makes Joelle Gergis partly correct. I read that one of the things she said was that parts of Australia would become uninhabitable with catastrophic climate change. She is only partly correct. The parts that will become uninhabitable will be the cities due to the urban heat island effect and if people like her get their way and the country goes to 50% and more energy from renewables and air conditioners can’t work without power.
90
On that point.
‘In an interview with German national daily Die Welt, BBK President Christoph Unger warned that in the future Germany faced higher probabilities of natural disasters arising from climate change, such as droughts, heat waves and flooding, but said his greatest concern was a power outage.
“After 24 hours without electricity we would have catastrophic conditions,” Unger told Die Welt.’

And further there is a hint that a wide blackout in Germany could bring down Europe.
(Not Poland nor Czechia as they have isolated themselves from the on/off of German wind turbines to protect their national grids.)
Also that Germans should have candles and torches handy. Public Authorities are urged to make sure of their stocks of diesel for emergency generators. I am surprised this made the MSM in Germany, normally very ABC in manner (don’t mention any problems**). Either this bloke has gone rogue or the problems of stabilising the grid are getting very serious.

I think these sites have been edited to put bits of PC AGW theory (which is totally irrelevant) embedded into the science speak as they know it will be read by students and lay persons.
30
The late Cretaceous was supposed to be cooler and drier, with lowered sea levels. There were dinosaurs and trees in both Australia and Antarctica but most discoveries (Leaellynasaura from Oz) (Antarctopelta from Antarctica) are from the mid Cretaceous or earlier. The titanosaurs, Diamantinasaurus and Wintonotitan, were late Cretaceous. Although smaller than their equivalents in South America, they are proof that the 2 continents were connected through Antarctica. I haven’t heard of any ice caps.
30
Of course Antarctica has moved south over the pole during that period too.

this audio has been edited since I heard it ‘live’ yesterday, principally to take out the ignorance/shock of the host, Jesse ‘Woke’ Mulligan, when he was told by paleontologist, Professor Paul Scofield, southern NZ used to have crocodiles when it was warmer. Between 1′ 00″ and 2′ 00″ of this 12-minute audio, the good prof calmly explains how this giant parrot, Heracles inexpectatus, lived between “16 and 19 million years” ago during the Miocene when it was “at least 6 or 7 degrees warmer” than today, a time when the “diversity and sheer number of animals was much greater than today“…
You could palpably hear watermelon heads exploding all around the country – as well as a few quiet, sane, satisfied chuckles from realists (myself included) – as the whole edifice of artifice collapsed under the weight of its own hubris. So who are the science/climate dєиiєrs now?

An observation on what connects this drive to prove man made disaster, trashing what would be rational science.
The weakness in Western society with the collapse of traditional religions is guilt. Guilt still remains though and it is fed by a number of ideas
which leave the majority of Western ex religious people focused on social justice, to name one.
Forests vs grass. The world is going to be ruined by deforestation, even if forests are replaced with orange trees or grasses or other vegetation. And it’s your fault.
Global Warming. The world is going to be ruined by the motor car and it’s your fault.
Gays and transvestites are being treated horribly and it’s your fault.
18th and 19th century Slaves were not paid and deserve compensation. And it’s all your fault.
Ab*rigines were not paid for work and even if white people were not paid either, they deserve compensation and it’s all your fault.
People live in appalling conditions and deserve better, so give them your houses and jobs and wealth, because it’s all your fault.
Western white people have done so much better than any other group and if you are Western and White, you have White Privilege and it’s all your fault.
So pay up. Vote for people who are going to right these wrongs.
Guilt, the one tool which can bring Western soft voters to their knees.
Which explains why Man Made Global Warming has such a zealotry behind it, such a religious feeling and such an attraction. I
had a discussion yesterday with someone who just ‘believes’ in it, regardless of the facts. And of course anyone who disagrees is a ‘denier’.
No wonder Australia is being destroyed by massive illegal carbon indulgences hidden in your electricity bills at a wholesale level.
It’s a religion, based on guilt. And so many opportunists are taking advantage of this. Even the Pope is behind it. A sort of scientific socialism justified by guilt.
80
I believe this ideas ties in the major concepts
Sorry
reparations for ab*rigines
Constitutional changes for ab*rigines
reparations in the US for slaves of 170 years ago
LGTBQI
tearing down Confederate statues
attacking Admiral Nelson, Captain Cook, Columbus, General Lee
immigration, open borders
toxic masculinity
#metoo
#jesuischarlie
Palestine
Climate change
Guilt. Endless guilt. The weakness of ex Christians who on the one hand are vehemently anti Christian
but still wide open to accusations which speak of guilt. We’re so sorry. Here have a lot of other people’s money, free health care and who needs borders?
So many of those things listed are just the height of hypocrisy, especially #jesuischarlie.
Jordan Peterson might love this explanation.
61
And there is no need to feel guilty about Global Warming/Climate Change, because we are not responsible for the increase in CO2 levels. That is science fact, not debatable. I am still though flabbergasted at someone saying that no matter what the facts, they believe because it feels right.
50
I guess my frustration is arguing the facts. Real science. I am dealing with religious converts to Climate Change. What is bothering them is guilt. Charities all over the world cater to guilt. It’s a huge business. Like windmills. Solar panels. Immigration. White privilege. But I repeat myself.

Isn’t the important point here that most warming is of Minimums? This clearly shows that man-made structures massively retain heat at night and so MUST increase those Minimums.
It is this night-time retention that is the key not UHI making maximums a little higher.

Slightly off-topic, but I just heard that some bishop of the blitherati has decreed that we should weigh airline passengers in order to have them pay more for their sins! OK, here goes! Firstly, all passengers and crew should fly naked to reduce their penalty. Secondly, there should be no food or drink on board. Thirdly, zero luggage! Fourth, no entertainment of any kind. In other words, all passengers should be indistinguishable from inert freight (cartons/bags of flour/sugar/pills). That’ll work!!!
50
Why stop there? Also allow no fuel. That way it can’t take off. Zero emissions. Infinite stupidity.

My scepticism began after looking at the long term temperature data for Broken Hill almost two decades ago:
http://www.bom.gov.au/tmp/cdio/047007_36_13_976646476085371650.png
Many remote coastal and rural locations exhibit similar trends with the Federation drought being evident. BoM disregards temperature recordss pre 1920 as they do not conform to the climate models.
An interesting comparison is to look at the Sydney Observatory Hill data then compare with nearby coastal locations like Nobby’s Head or Bega.
http://www.bom.gov.au/tmp/cdio/066062_36_13_4410928355987287807.png
Sydney displays a significant rising trend that is not observed in the less populated locations:
http://www.bom.gov.au/tmp/cdio/069002_36_13_7905830059342164989.png
Although the data ends in the 1990s it does not display a warming trend.
30
Sorry Will, the first link to the BOM shows “The page you requested was not found on this server”. Of course.

This is the most important significant posting since cliamtegate ect or even since AGW was conceived. It basically shows that most likely, the small recorded rises in temps are 100% due to UHI and there is no AGW.This should be posted every newspaper TV stations to be advised, It physically shows that AGW does not exist.

‘Throwing cold water on extreme heat hype’
By Dr. Joel N. Myers, AccuWeather Founder and CEO: “Although ***average temperatures have been higher in recent years, there is no evidence so far that extreme heat waves are becoming more common because of climate change, especially when you consider how many heat waves occurred historically compared to recent history.”
“Kansas City, Missouri, for example, experienced an average of 18.7 days a year at 100 degrees or higher during the 1930s, compared to just 5.5 a year over the last 10 years. And over the last 30 years, Kansas City has averaged only 4.8 days a year at 100 degrees or higher, which is only one-quarter of the frequency of days at 100 degrees or higher in the 1930s.
Here is a fact rarely, if ever, mentioned: 26 of the 50 states set their all-time high temperature records during the 1930s that still stand (some have since been tied). And an additional 11 state all-time high temperature records were set before 1930 and only two states have all-time record high temperatures that were set in the 21st century (South Dakota and South Carolina).
So 37 of the 50 states have an all-time high temperature record not exceeded for more than 75 years. Given these numbers and the decreased frequency of days of 100 degrees or higher, it cannot be said that either the frequency or magnitude of heat waves are more common today.”…
https://www.climatedepot.com/2019/08/07/accuweather-founder-ceo-no-evidence-so-far-that-extreme-heat-waves-are-becoming-more-common-because-of-climate-change-throwing-cold-water-on-extreme-heat-hype/
20
Apart from averages, it shows that extreme weather, heat waves are less frequent. There has been a slight heating as predicted, before now a rapid fall. The idea that extreme weather is as predictable as the average is just silly. Clearly it’s not true, but that’s just the truth of it. Like hurricanes. What I would love to know is why a 1C increase in average world temperature (whatever that means) would increase extremes? Firstly in the range of temperatures it is almost tiny for sub tropical, temperate and certainly arctic conditions with ranges of say 10C, 20C and 40C across a year. Then why should it have any effect? The only thing missing is any proof. As usual.

6 Aug: Washington Times: Gunman’s left-wing views thwart Democratic efforts to pin mass shootings on Trump
By Valerie Richardson
The El Paso suspect, 21-year-old Patrick Crusius, is believed to have authored a 2,300-word manifesto saying he was motivated by the “Hispanic invasion of Texas,” criticizing “race mixing,” and warning of “cultural and ethnic replacement.”
Along with such white-nationalist stances, however, are positions that would fit in with the agenda of the climate-change movement, including blasts at corporations, consumerism and environmental degradation.
“[O]ur lifestyle is destroying the environment of our country,” said the document. “The decimation of the environment is creating a massive burden for future generations. Corporations are heading the destruction of our environment by shamelessly overharvesting resources.”
The manifesto went on to say that “water is being polluted from farming and oil drilling operations” and consumption is “creating thousands of tons of unnecessary plastic waste and electronic waste, and recycling to help slow this down is almost non-existent.”
The “next logical step is to decrease the number of people in America using resources,” said the document.
Craig Rucker, president of the free-market group CFACT, called out 2020 Democratic presidential contenders for being “quick to take cheap shots at the President for supposedly fueling this gunman’s bigotry.”
“[W]hat’s particularly irksome in this case is that if these presidential candidates are going to point fingers, then [they] ought to be very careful it doesn’t come back on them,” Mr. Rucker said in a statement. “That’s because this so-called manifesto does not just point to anti-immigration as a motivating factor, but also deep green ecology.”…
“What then, should we point the blame of this attack and others on the fearmongering of liberal politicians on subjects like climate change, overpopulation and resource depletion?” Mr. Rucker asked. “No, and we won’t, because these are the rantings of a madman, and tragedy is not the time to score political points.”…

by Aaron Klein
Missing from much of the news media coverage is that the manifesto promotes far-left policy prescriptions including universal healthcare and a socialist-style “universal income.”…
While the news media have sought to portray the shooter as a Trump ideologue, perhaps the two main themes of the document are actually anti-corporatist and eco-extremist sentiment…
1 – The shooter stressed the environmental aspects of his motivations by naming the manifesto “The Inconvenient Truth,” clearly utilizing the namesake of Al Gore’s climate alarmist documentary…
4 – The author repeatedly blamed corporations for “the destruction of our environment.”…
8 – The manifesto blamed the “American lifestyle” for “destroying the environment of our country,” and claimed this so-called “decimation of the environment is creating a massive burden for future generations.”…
9 – Far from singularly expressing ultranationalist ideology, the manifesto actually slams Americans and calls for the general population to be forcibly decreased…

6 Aug: Newsbusters: An ‘Inconvenient Truth’: El Paso Shooter Was Eco-Extremist, Loved ‘Lorax’
By Joseph Vazquez
The alleged manifesto was headlined “The Inconvenient Truth,” similar to Davis Guggenheim’s 2006 documentary on Al Gore, and included eco-extremist rantings about destroying the environment, The Lorax, plastic waste and more.
CNN and some other media conveniently ignored other portions of the four-page manifesto (believed to have been written by shooting suspect Patrick Crusius) that would reflect badly on the left — like the shooter’s environmental sentiments…
On page two it read, “Our lifestyle is destroying the environment of our country. The decimation of the environment is creating a massive burden for future generations. Corporations are heading the destruction of our environment by shamelessly overharvesting resources.” [emphasis added]
It cited the Dr. Seuss’ fable writing, “This phenomenon is brilliantly portrayed in the decades-old classic ‘The Lorax.’ Watersheds around the country, especially in agricultural areas, are being depleted. Fresh water is being polluted from farming and oil-drilling operations.” He attacked “consumer culture” for plastic and e-waste, complained about urban sprawl, the use of paper towels and the unwillingness of people to change their lifestyles.”
Many of those environmental attitudes are promoted by the liberal media. In 2012, it fawned over the updated Lorax when a movie adaptation was released. NBC’s Today, CBS New York, Huffington Post and others celebrated its environmental messaging.
NBC Today co-host Matt Lauer was stunned that Fox News host Lou Dobbs had criticized the movie for trying to indoctrinate children with an environmentalist agenda. He told Lorax actor Ed Helms “believe it or not, Dr. Seuss has sparked controversy with this movie.”…
ThinkProgress quipped on March 9, 2012, that it was “safe to say that anyone shocked that the movie has a strong environmental message has never read the book. The Lorax speaks for the trees.” That left-wing site perceived the moral of the story to be “it’s up to us to stop unsustainable industries: ‘UNLESS someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.’
The Huffington Post lectured parents, telling them to talk with their children about the film’s messages and “act on them,” on March 8, 2012. CNN even noted on March 13, 2012, that The Lorax movie adaptation was criticized for allowing commercial tie-ins with IHOP and Mazda to taint the Lorax’s “green message.” As recently as 2018, NPR reported that a federal court judge quoted the Lorax in a decision cancelling a gas pipeline permit…

7 Aug: Spectator UK: The inconvenient truth about the El Paso shooter
by Charles Moore
Who wrote ‘Our lifestyle is destroying the environment of our country… creating a massive burden for future generations. Corporations are heading the destruction of our environment by shamelessly over-harvesting resources… the next logical step is to decrease the number of people in America using resources. If we can get rid of enough people, then our way of life can become more sustainable’?
The answer, if media reports are accurate, is Patrick Crusius, the man accused of the El Paso massacre. The words appeared in his testament, entitled (in homage to Al Gore?) The Inconvenient Truth, which he seems to have put online before decreasing the number of people in America by 22.
Who said, on Twitter, ‘I want socialism, and I’ll not wait for the idiots to finally come round to understanding’? Connor Betts, the man accused of shooting nine people, including his sister, in Dayton, Ohio…
Betts sounds like a potential Bernie Sanders recruit. Crusius seems closer to Extinction Rebellion than to Donald Trump.

8 Aug: Guardian: Climate crisis reducing land’s ability to sustain humanity, says IPCC
UN report finds ecosystems never before under such threat and restoration is urgent
LINK How climate’s impact on land threatens civilisation – and how to fix it
The climate crisis is damaging the ability of the land to sustain humanity, with cascading risks becoming increasingly severe as global temperatures rise, according to a landmark UN report compiled by some of the world’s top scientists.
Global heating is increasing droughts, soil erosion and wildfires while diminishing crop yields in the tropics and thawing permafrost near the poles, says the report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change…
Further heating will lead to unprecedented climate conditions at lower latitudes, with potential growth in hunger, migration and conflict and increased damage to the great northern forests.
The report (LINK), approved by the world’s governments, makes clear that humanity faces a stark choice between a vicious or virtuous circle. Continued destruction of forests and huge emissions from cattle and other intensive farming practices will intensify the climate crisis, making the impacts on land still worse…

Dietary changes, featuring plant-based foods and sustainable animal-sourced food, could free up several million square kilometers of land by 2050 and potentially cut 0.7-8.0 gigatonnes a year of carbon dioxide equivalent, the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) said in the report…
The IPCC met to finalize the report this week in Geneva, Switzerland, which should help to guide governments meeting later this year at a conference in Chile on ways to implement the 2015 Paris Agreement and avoid runaway climate change.
Ahead of the report’s release, Greenpeace activists in Switzerland unveiled a banner outside the meeting reading “Less Meat=Less Heat. Climate Action NOW!”…
Such warming has caused more heatwaves, droughts and heavy precipitation, as well as land degradation and desertification…
The latest report also warned of more disruption to global food chains as extreme weather events become even more frequent due to climate change…
Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro has supported opening up protected areas of the Amazon to facilitate agriculture and mining since he took office in January.

Updates & Corrections
Correction 08 August 2019: An earlier version of the story incorrectly stated that hundreds of experts compiled the latest IPCC report.
Update 08 August 2019: The fact that around half the experts who compiled the latest IPCC report hail from developing countries has been added to the story.

8 Aug: SMH: ‘Warning flag’: IPCC finds rapid land warming threatens food security
By Peter Hannam
Temperatures over the world’s land areas are warming at about twice the global rate, expanding deserts in Australia, Africa and Asia, and hitting food security hard, a new UN report finds.
The Intergov ernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) found that surface air temperatures between 2006 and 2015 were 1.53 degrees warmer than the pre-industrial average of 1850-1900. By contrast, the combined warming of land and oceans was 0.87 degrees, the IPCC’s special report on land said…
Mark Howden, director of the Climate Change Institute at the Australian National University and an IPCC vice-chair, said the report was “a warning flag” about the threats and “how hard we need to go” to cut greenhouse gas emissions…
Alana Mann, a lead researcher at the Sydney Environment Institute, said the report should be “a big wake-up call”, not least for the cities where people “assume supermarket shelves will always be full”…

Sites such as this one say they control for UHI, and that the same temperature “anomalies” occur in both rural and urban recordings?

Who says that John ?
The mob you cite are
A leading warmista attack dog group.
Their target is anyone who denies GORE BULL warming.

Interesting articles and assessment of all the rounding issues and the record keeping practices, e.g. tending to round down when reading thermometer.
But what the basis for saying the climate scientist at large around the world don’t correct for UHI it in their temperature reconstructions?

How interesting. All that hot pavement does what any hot rock will do, it radiates. Quick, I have to find my old physics teacher, the one whose lectures were so dull I slept through them and still passed the course and make sure he knows the truth. Hot objects radiate.
And thanks to the great pliability of the English language we have a new word, ecostress to describe this new bogyman. Just paste parts of two words together any way you want and you now have some new terror to be afraid of, ecostress.
As I remember him Charles DeGualle did not suffer fools easily. I wonder what he would say about the fact that the runways at the airport named after him are doing exactly what they have been doing since they were laid down. I can hear him laughing now.
Then there’s the money being spent to research this new nonsense. That hurts more than anything else. Do we not have real problems enough? Should we, just maybe, spend our money on the real problems? But that can’t happen because it would point out that NASA has been a major part of the problem all along. Physician, heal thyself. Except the incentive is exactly the opposite.

It’s a world of truly perverse incentives. It’s too easy to get it wrong and too hard to get it right.

7 Aug: Vox: Using electricity at different times of day could save us billions of dollars
“Load flexibility” could shave 15 percent off our peak electricity needs by 2030.
by David Roberts
As renewables grow, power is becoming less controllable (less “dispatchable” in the lingo). Wind and solar energy can’t be turned on and off at will — they come and go with the weather and time of day, so they must be accommodated, as demand once was.
But the less-familiar story is that demand is also changing, becoming more dispatchable…
Just how big a role could load flexibility play? Conveniently, the Brattle Group, a research consultancy, has issued a study on just that question: “The National Potential for Load Flexibility (LINK).”
Brattle researchers built a model for electricity markets (LoadFLEX), tackled a lot of technical problems (like quantifying the future impacts of still-nascent programs) and estimated the total market potential of current and expanded load flexibility through 2030.
What they found is the load flexibility could readily be expanded, bringing in new technologies and producing new benefits, to satisfy almost 20 percent of US peak demand — potentially eliminating the need to generate one out of every five electrons when demand spikes…READ ON

Wherein temperatures stated,

Hello,
I am french, I live in Paris. For information, The airport is not “Charles De Gaule” but it is the Orly airport. 🙂

Sorry to be obtuse Jo, but are these the guys quibbling about 0.2 degrees per decade? Tell ’em to get their hand off it.
Cheers,
