Climate Change to make Boxing Day cricket extinct. ABC and Monash make history extinct.

It’s a taxpayer funded bonfire: The billion dollar ABC does cut-n-paste “journalism” from the largely taxpayer funded Monash Uni, which wrote a one-sided, badly researched piece as advertising for The Australian Conservation Foundation. Not only have Australians played cricket in 42 degree heat a thousand times before, but on days when the sun was obscured by smoke from bushfires. It’s all easy to find history from 150 years ago recorded on official sites and searchable for anyone with “the internet”.

No hard questions asked — the only question that matters is “how does this help Big Government?”

Extreme heat due to climate change could send cricket’s Boxing Day Test into extinction, researchers say

By Richard Willingham and Joseph Dunstan, ABC, News

The Boxing Day Test may need to be moved to November or March in the future to avoid extreme heat, which is a danger to players and cricket fans, a new report has suggested.

Cricket Australia must also work to help grassroots clubs deal with extreme heat, the report from Monash University’s Climate Change Communication Research Hub has found.

The study, commissioned by the Australian Conservation Foundation (ACF), urges Cricket Australia to use its prominence to push for greater climate action and do more to look after player and spectator welfare.

Evidence = one guy who didn’t drink enough water on a 42 degree day which has happened in summer for 150 years in Australia (and probably the last ten thousand years):

Conditions in the middle of the ground can reach into the high 50s, with English captain Joe Root hospitalised with dehydration during the Sydney Test in 2018 when the air temperature hit 42 degrees Celsius, as a heat tracker in the middle of the ground showed 57.6C.

Other evidence = junk climate models we know are wrong:

Meanwhile, the “shoulder months” of November and March are expected to heat up to become as warm as recent Decembers.

Two minutes of actual research that the ABC didn’t do:

Over 150 years ago people played cricket in Melbourne at 42C and in partial darkness due to smoke from bushfires. Heres a man in 1912 remembering a match he went to as a child Jan 14th 1862. It may have been even hotter than that. The BOM offical records say it was 44C. But hey, it’s not like we pay the ABC to phone the BOM and ask them…

Heatwaves, Cricket, 1862, Australia.

Heatwaves, Cricket, 1862, Australia.

Then there was the time players had to abandon cricket due to heat, when it was 45C in Albury in 1939 and the town ran out of ice. Forget the hype, “conditions were not the best, and the “players generally stood manfully up to the heat” — unlike modern snowflakes at Monash Uni and millenials at the ABC.

Usual lies-by-omission pretending that Mildura did not exist before 1970:

Both Monash Uni and the ABC are either incompetent or deliberately erasing history:

ABC 2019:

Mildura batting away heatwaves and dust storms already

Over the past 40 years, the north-west Victorian city of Mildura’s average daytime January temperature has increased by 2.7C. Recently it endured three days over 40C, with last Saturday’s round of games cancelled.

A quick search for Mildura, Cricket, Heat finds a cricket game in Mildura in November 24th, 1900 at 42C. The Meteorological records were printed right next to the cricket column, and in Nov 1900 there were four days above 42C.

Past peer reviewed science reports told us scientists were worried that temperatures in Australia had fallen from 1880 to 1950. (Deacon et al 1952)

The only thing this story shows is that big government funds are always used to make Big Government even bigger.

Readers here might like to find even hotter more scary stories from Trove. I didn’t have long to look…

    Border Morning Mail.

    Manfully.

    Did they get that?

    Manfully.

These ABC soy-boys wouldn’t know “manfully” if they tripped over it.

The feminization of the Australian male continues in the ABC, as the left increasingly makes itself irrelevant to the broader community.

    Close it down.

The ABC and Monash propaganda machines pushing “climate crisis” don’t want facts interfering with their narrative.

They probably believe it’s just not cricket to call them out on their basic lack of journalistic professionalism that does scant historical research.

I’m so sick of media vibes trying to overwhelm facts.

What’s remarkable here is that the source of this spurious “research” is, as the ABC report observed, something called The Monash Climate Change Communication Research Hub (here). This “Hub” purposes:

Our research investigates public attitudes towards climate change, how the media reports on climate change, and how Australia currently engages and could further engage with climate science.

The “climate science” is assumed. This is about

The academic and professional members of the MCCCRH are committed to building climate literacy in Australia.

That is, propagandising a form of scientism, one which many already literate persons find dubious. Given our experience of totalitarian regimes, the arrogance of this so-called university is unremarkable. The only question is: why must taxpayers continue to fund such cant and humbug? And why commit the rest of us to the First Circle, as Solzhenitsyn put it?

Increasingly, like the ABC, universities represent a wicked waste of taxpayer funds, taxpayers, incidentally, whose standards of living, by and large, continue to decline.

Players will tell you that playing test cricket in India is far worse than in Melbourne due to the higher humidity and there are no plans to ban cricket in India. Cricket Australia has also scheduled tests against Pakistan in the UAE for the best part of 20 years where weather conditions with dew points of > 30 degrees C are possible. This article shows players preparing for the extreme UAE humidity and heat back in 2014. https://www.cricket.com.au/news/mitchell-johnson-ready-for-uae-heat-against-pakistan/2014-09-26

The real issue with playing any sport outdoors is heat with high humidity. Dry heat allows players to keep cool by sweating, but in high humidity your evaporative cooling slows down, especially when the dew point rises above 20 degrees C. In the dryer heat of Melbourne the dew point is generally below 10 degrees C and players main concern is maintaining hydration.

Both Monash Uni and the ABC are either incompetent or deliberately erasing history:

I would think they are trying to erase history because the snowflakes can’t comprehend a time further back than breakfast. Going further back in time will make their heads explode which could mess up the TV cameras and lose funds for the university.

What are they going to do when the cold starts in a few years and people realise that ‘global warming’ was/is a scam to get their money?

Both Monash Uni and the ABC are either incompetent or deliberately erasing history:
Hey, it’s possible to be incompetent as well as dishonest. Not accusing, just sayin’ it’s not one thing or t’other. Walk, chew gum…

Anyway, if you look at old weather maps they’re just black and white. Look at one now and you get these terrifying red and even purple blobs over bright orange gashes. Clearly things are getting worse.

    But wait! I’m confused…

Sydney’s highest ranked heatwave by EHF amplitude occurred in late January 1960…The 1960 EHF time series for Observatory Hill shows a six-day EHF event, thereby signifying a heatwave lasting eight days as the EHF is a three-day-period index. The event peak is four to five times the magnitude of Sydney’s severe EHF threshold of 10.2 °C2, which establishes this event as an extreme heatwave.

The above was published by the BoM in partnership the CSIRO, but such institutions could easily have been infiltrated by right-wing bloggers. Plus it was written way back in 2013, before the globe really warmed up. (Unlike the Australian cricketers, who were in Madras, I was in Sydney in January 1960 when the tar roads melted and we fried eggs in the sun. But I’m a right-wing blogger, so I would say that.)

    Very True!

However we have new Liberal Government, and a new Liberal Party member.

My interest is to encourage the Liberal Party to measure up to its own values.
    https://www.liberal.org.au/our-beliefs

My view is that the representatives of the party do not fully own those beliefs and do not (in the main) promote those values.

    Like this:

That, wherever possible, government should not compete with an efficient private sector; and that businesses and individuals – not government – are the true creators of wealth and employment.

How does the ABC exist now, in conformity with that belief?

And of course the ABC news website doesn’t allow comments – I mean how could they handle this contradiction to their NEWS? I mean seriously – cricket is a SUMMER sport – its played for days on end in the burning sunshine. Seriously a 1-2°C increase is going to stop them playing? They only stop when it’s wet or dark – not when it’s hot. Good old Tony Greig used to show the temperature out on the pitch and it often hit 50°C and the game went on.

Extreme heat is not a danger to the players? 100 years ago, they would have been smoking as well , and we finally admitted that smoking was dangerous. If we have more summers like this one, then it would make sense. Just because something was done in the past, on a exceptionally hot day, does not mean it should continue.

I, probably like others here, have worked in NE South Australia / South West QLD for a few years. Outdoor physical work for 12 hour shifts (shift changes at midnight/midday).

We had “heat stress” training, run by the RFDS, and our employers took the issue seriously. We were also reminded that it isn’t just really hot days that can cause heat stress, indeed, cooler days are arguably more dangerous as people do not necessarily take the same level of precautions as they do in summer.

Are extremely high temperatures dangerous? Yes, if people do not make an effort to look after themselves. Wide brimmed hats, light coloured, and lightweight material – long sleeves and pants, easy access to water, access to air conditioning for rest breaks (plus in the accommodation). You know, just like cricketers wear, and experience today, except, arguably more physically demanding work than most players on the field.

No one died, no one collapsed. People didn’t even complain too much. Countries in the Middle East on the other hand, where people are effectively slave labour, now this is a genuine problem of human safety which needs to be addressed, but as usual, people like Peter Fitzroy wield their “bigotry of low expectations” freely, and do not actually care about their fellow humans.

But I did, and many years ago. This is basically a road map for what needed to be done. If you had read my links to the latest assessment report you would have seen the progress made since then. Of, course the current models are still not perfect, but they capture a hell of a lot more than anyone here is likely to admit.

The models about fire behaviour done in the 1980’s by the CSIRO, are proving remarkably accurate. And remember this is not an El Niño year. So according to your models (ie nothing is changing) these fires, this drought and these high temps should not be happening

                You’re out of date, Peter.

Read up some more on the failure of the models as pushed by your IPCC:

“…neither the SRES nor the RCP projection scenarios convey reliable information about possible future air temperatures. Further, the realizations are not predictively unique. Each SRES or RCP scenario is fully embedded in the uncertainty spread of all the other scenarios. Individual SRES or RCP projections would not be observationally distinguishable on any time scale, nor would be the fidelity of one or the other scenario relative to any observed temperature trend. These points are discussed further below.”

The maths might be a bit tough for you, but give it a shot. 🙂

                And the Conclusion?

                Here, for your benefit:

“The unavoidable conclusion is that a temperature signal from anthropogenic CO2 emissions (if any) cannot have been, nor presently can be, evidenced in climate observables.”

Am I right in thinking the ABC announced just a year or so ago that it would regard global warming as proven science and no longer up for debate? If so, that means they’re stuck on a treadmill of having to constantly find evidence of warming year after year to make each year “The hottest on record”. Their comedy shows suck, but at least their increasingly desperate warming propaganda might provide some laughs for our tax money.

Indeed I used to visit them sometimes for the laughs in comments. But sometime within a few years I guess they “filtered” skeptics out, their comments got boring, and sometime after that they started asking for money “to save the world”. All kind of admirable, if only they bothered to figure out if the world needed saving.

The BBC did it in about 2010 or so.

The first thing Tony Blair did when he got into power in 1997 was to close the “Arabic Section” of the BBC. It was deemed “unnecessary”. Over a hundred highly-experienced people who could speak Arabic or Persian or Pushtun were sacked. That was done to prepare for the forthcoming 9/11 and invasion of Iraq and Afghanistan. A planned war against Iran that did not (yet) materialise. In retrospect, it is very obvious.

In a similar manner, the BBC stopped debate in 2010 so that the Global Warming agenda could be put in place. It is an information war my kind lady.

This time, it is a war on all hard-working people. Those who actually provide services and produce goods. Those who pay those extravagant taxes that allow Australia to send troops to fight Russian-speakers in Ukraine – to assist in ethnic-cleansing and population displacement. The navy that blockades Yemen where many thousands of people are starving. These things are not being reported but that is the reality.

I just did a quick check of the highest Boxing Day maximum temperatures in Victoria since 2000. The only extremely hot year was 2018, where 40C+ was registered in many places. Most years were in the 20-35C range. Melbourne would be considerably cooler than that on average.

I umpired cricket for a number of years, mainly at the junior level. I had this type of conversation with the coaches ten years ago. We agreed it was going to get worse. It hasn’t yet. The kids are well looked after.

I can just imagine it now.

Hello (insert name here) this is Cricket Australia, you have just been selected to play your first test for Australia in the Boxing Day Test.

Yeah, look, thanks, this is a truly great honour to be selected to play my first test, but I hear the Bureau of Meteorology has predicted there might be a 40 degree day, so look, thanks for this honour, but I don’t think I can accept if that’s the case.

Yeah! Right! Pigs will fly. There’s one player who will never receive a second call.

And try telling the players that Monash University has decreed that the temperature is too hot for you to be playing in it. And imagine what the team response would be if one of the players said, hey, it’s too hot for me to be playing. It, umm, might be their last game. Twelfthie, you’re up.

And two days of 80,000 plus paying cricket watchers. Cricket Australia will be giving this Monash ‘tut tut tut’ admonishment some really deep thought eh. (and read that again) ….. 80000 fans paying to go and watch the game. There’s 80,000 people who aren’t all that worried about the heat eh!

Cricket players around the World would be laughing so loud if the Australian team even contemplated something like this.

And 80000 paying fans. Every cricket playing Nation in the World would give their eye teeth to get a Boxing Day Test in Australia. Imagine how many more chances they would get if once, just once they were to say ….. sorry, it’s too hot for us.

The only people giving this report more than one blink of consideration is the ABC and its leftie supporters.

Even Jim Maxwell himself would see this report and laugh his head off.

    Tony.

ABC & Monash Uni want to ban Boxing Day Tests at the iconic MCG because of AGW/CC!!!

      LOL!!!!!

I played this fine game for ~ 20 years and recall once playing in February Perth 46 degree heat in the early 1980’s – and I was a medium pace bowler – did I or my team mates complain? Of course not. The umps were smart enough to have 3 drink breaks instead of one drink break per 2 hour playing session. And these heatwave conditions were rare events during Summer Saturday matches.

The sad thing is that us tax payers are funding these ludicrous comments – and I bet you these leftie researchers / journos have never played cricket – if they had maybe they would understand. And clearly they have zero knowledge of meteorology & geology – most scientists with expertise in these disciplines reject “AGW Ideology” outright – except those on Academic Gravy Trains – we all know that most research funding is directed towards “CAGW” and not real “GT Cycles”. The IPCC have done a good job with its “AGW Indoctrination”. What are they going to say when the next “GC Cycle” kicks in? And believe me that “GC Cycle” is imminent. And it will be prolonged.

Thank you for using the newspaper clips Jo. These may be the only sources of honest information from the past we have as the Left continue to erase or alter history. That is, until they erase or alter those old newspaper records.

Remember, we have the Left’s instruction manual, “1984”.

We know what Winston Smith did. Winston rewrote old newspaper articles to reflect the Party’s current version of reality and threw the old articles down the “memory hole” for incineration.

The trouble though is factual sites like Jo’s are not mainstream. Mainstream is getting closer and closer to an Orwellian style world. Winston Smith knew lies were the norm. So do we. So there is a lot of similarities between the fictional world of 1984 and reality. What we don’t have as yet are the cameras in our houses monitoring our activities to be collected for re-programming. China though is in effect already there in most areas. Mass surveillance in China is being used to control the population. Our turn might not be that far away. As for memory holes, another approach is being used in our education institutions to achieve the same effect. Historical and science books contain a lot of misinformation and lies. At the end of the day the truth can only be found if an individual fact checks the material and that requires a lot of time and effort, which pretty much rules out the majority of the population. Hence the powerful elite have an easy time to control the population.

You must not have a smart phone or laptop less than 6 years old.

For extra comfort read Microsoft’s declaration on third party apps running on your computer.

Apple has similar declarations and I assume Android devices are the same.

I for one have had a piece of tape over the front camera of my company provided Iphone and laptop. But I know this is feeble.

I willingly purchased and installed a China made 8 camera surveillance system for the outside of my home. It in turn is connected via IP so that I can view the cameras remotely. The system doesn’t claim to have audio nor does it have GPS (that I know of). You do know just how easy it would have been for China to add those features for their own use?

I have my laptop camera covered.

Bought a new Win 10 pc for daughter for school. MS makes it hard not to sign up to the Borg and use an MS account, so after digging online, found a way to avoid having MS in my business for ever by creating a local account on the PC for myself and my daughter.

I work in IT, and IMHO the tech companies want all your stuff in the cloud so its easier to watch what you do and trawl everything you have to create a profile of you and work out your habits eyc utilising AI. It makes my skin crawl. Stay away from any cloud stuff if you can. They will sell your data and any medical records etc may be also fair game. I opted out if the shiny new electronic gov health record, and as expected its been a bit of a privacy debacle.

When i set ip a PC i disable any biometric authentication ( do you know physically where your thumb print is stored?). Teenagers are tech savvy so will use biometrics as they are “cool”…cool is just another word for “all my tech ignorant mates do it” and of course teenagers dont need the web coz they know everything anyway…..

My suggestion is on a new PC is take your time to find out how it does things, dont rush, and when in doubt in Services diable stuff with extreme prejudice….

OriginalSteve, I am surrounded by 4 28 inch monitors and 6 computers connected by KVM switch and not one of those monitors is displaying any flavour of windows nor do any of the computers have windows installed on them. I use IBM OS/2 on my main machine (AMD Ryzen second gen) but sometimes switch to Linux Mint or Zorin for some programs that won’t run on OS/2.

My advice to people getting new computers is to dump windows if it is installed and then install a version of Linux (use the latest ZorinOS if you must have something that looks like windows).

Incorrect. I do have security cameras, smart phones and webcams on my PCs and laptop. I also know of the risks. The risk is small and manageable if one is an IT systems specialist like I am. In any case that is a far cry from an Orwellian society, at least for now. Another risk is knowing where people are even when the Location setting is turned off on a mobile phone. We just have to live with such technological intrusions. The alternative is to live under a rock or in a cave somewhere. No thanks.

There could be some truth that more events are now cancelled due to heat than in the past.

This doesn’t mean it’s hotter more often but that people are weaker and less tolerant of heat.

For example, my bushwalking club now cancels walks when the forecast temperature is over 38C. They didn’t do that in the past.

Anyone remember the Boxing Day Test in around the early 90s that included about half a day’s play because it bucketed down for the rest? Conditions are not uniform. But if they are worried about heat stress for the spectators, have they ever thought of making free cool potable (i.e., not what you get from the sinks in the toilet, or that ghastly metallic tasting stuff from water fountains) water available?

Christmas 1950 on the New South Wales side of the Queensland Border, near Mount Warning in dairy farm country, Norco territory.

A very hot day that resulted in ginger beer clay pot container lids bursting off and Christmas decorations being hosed down making a mess of the table setting awaiting lunch to be served of a baked meal cooking in a wood fired oven and stove top. All windows and doors open to take advantage of any breeze.

After lunch the men and older boys met on a field at the edge of the village and played cricket while the young children climbed into Willow Trees to watch. And early evening a very loud and impressive thunderstorm followed by almost unbearable increase in humidity. And then to bed and a restless night until the weatherboard house on stilts cooled down.

    Boxing Day a repeat.

Summer in Australia the land of droughts, bushfires, heatwaves, flooding rain and cricket.

How about this for a plan: Revert to managed State Forests for most National Parks with sustainable logging again producing income for maintaining fire trails and fire breaks and re-creating businesses and jobs to grow the economy.

Remove the Marine Parks and replace imported seafood with Australian coast quality seafood and re-create businesses and jobs to grow the economy.

And allow exploration and exploitation of State Forests for minerals and energy reserves and build dams at suitable sites already identified but abandoned in favour of NP&W.

All subject to sensible common sense based rules and regulations that take the environment into consideration, because what we now had confirmed in this bushfire season is that National Parks are a financial burden that is unaffordable and being allowed to go wild before destruction by unstoppable bushfires.

When the first Royal National Park in Sydney, Sutherland District, was badly burnt in the 1990s the fire came from what had been managed by the NSW Water Board, dam catchment areas that had been handed over to NP&W.

Delhi has been hit with what local media described as ‘bone-chilling days’ this week. In the early hours of Friday, the temperature dropped to almost four degrees Celsius (39.2 degrees Fahrenheit). In the late 70s I participated in a National competition at Corowa on the Murray from Boxing Day to early Jan. It was 40c+ every day and only relented the day we packed up. Less than ideal, but not a surprise in summer especially inland.

We are becoming snowflakes though that panic about blistering, searing, baking heatwaves anytime its over 30C so it wont be any surprise at all if summer becomes a politically sponsored avoidance period. I saw somewhere that the conditions under which workers on the new big building projects in Brisbane (a casino, hotels — north bank?) will work, include pretty much knocking off when the temp is 28 and humidity hits 75%.

Conditions like those will make it pretty difficult to be competitive globally. Well maybe it’s good, money is being spread around? In 1988 (an El Nino year) with a couple of mates, we competed in the Central Australian Masters Games at Alice Springs. We were originally going for the Rifle Shooting but decided all day would be too hot and uncomfortable on the open range, so entered Golf instead. The locals insisted each group took an Esky of ice-water with strict instructions to use it regularly and definitely NOT wait until we felt like a drink as that would be ‘too late’! They were right! Even so, as Tassies we still struggled a bit and after the first couple of days the organisers were persuaded to start earlier in the morning instead of midday.

However, we didn’t feel like such “snowflakes” when the heat beat some Darwin competitors who headed ‘home’ the night before the last day!

Victoria is leading the charge for electric vehicles including one in Moe that can charge 4 vehicles at a time, enough charge for 400 kms in 15 minutes, solar powered. Doesn’t say how it works when the sun don’t shine.

    https://www.premier.vic.gov.au/victoria-leading-the-charge-for-electric-vehicles/

The Minister said that the new charging stations would ease the anxiety associated with driving EVs, that the battery may run out before reaching a charging station. Makes me think of the risk associated with driving an EV in heatwave weather, not using the Aircon, in order to drive further, so overheating. And if the battery runs out and a person or persons are stuck somewhere in the heat, again no cooling. As well, there would be a need to wait for a specialised vehicle capable of charging the battery or towing the vehicle. It’s not like running out of petrol where you can phone a friend to bring some.

Of course if someone died in an EV because of the heat, climate change would be blamed, not the stupidity of the driver

And please consider that long range EVs are expensive luxury vehicles, the more affordable are double the price of a conventional equivalent and offer half the theoretical range.

Consider 500 Km factory stated theoretical range, meaning not recommended regular 100 per cent battery pack charge.

Recommended 80 per cent recharge equals 400 Km range.

Deduct on average 30 per cent loss of range based on factors including weight of passenger and luggage load, use of accessories like in Australia essential air conditioning, how many hills, headwinds, highway speeds (more speed more energy consumed), etc.

So range now 280 Km at best.

That is not far in Australian country kilometres, and considering the length of time needed for each 80 per cent recharge.

Hybrid Technology for Australia makes more sense, North America Standards not Euro Standards, as Toyota has explained to our federal government.

“researchers say”, “scientists say”. BOM Official records say. Utterly discredited phrases when Blind Freddy can prove them wrong with a simple free fast search on Trove.

So what passes for a scientist these days? Tim Flannery? Ridiculous. Then alleged temperature ‘researchers’ who do not read newspapers? And the BOM who say that Australia’s temperature history started only in 1909. And that has yet to be explained let alone justified.

And this is all about a degree or two. Who really cares if it is 28 or 29 or 30? Or -2 or -4, or even 41 or 43?
In the experience of most people this makes no difference at all. And they are right.

this is the biggie today. BBC radio said report claims 4,000 deaths due to these “climate disasters”, 1,900 from the Indian monsoon, 1,300 from Cyclone Idai in East Africa. add the 673 mentioned by The Guardian for Dorian, and you have reached 3,873 of the 4,000 deaths. how many were actually caused by CAGW is a different matter, but
PG&E would definitely be happy if the CAGW mob would pay for the California wildfires! etc etc.

28 Dec: Guardian: Extreme weather: Climate crisis linked to at least 15 $1bn-plus disasters in 2019
Christian Aid report highlights costs of floods, fires and storms around the world
    by Fiona Harvey
Climate breakdown played a key role in at least 15 events in 2019 that cost more than $1bn (£760m) in damage, with more than half of those costing more than $10bn each.

Extreme weather including floods, storms, droughts and wildfires struck every inhabited continent in the past year, causing devastation and loss of life. Christian Aid, which tracked climate-related destruction in 2019, said the costs in human terms and insured losses were likely to have been underestimated…

***Cyclone Idai killed 1,300 people in Zimbabwe, Mozambique and Malawi in March, and Cyclone Fani struck India and Bangladesh in May and June. A stronger than usual monsoon killed 1,900 people in India…

Wildfires laid waste to farming areas in California and caused more than $25bn in damage, and Hurricane Dorian swept along the US east coast, killing 673 people.
The study published on Friday was compiled before the full effects of the Australian wildfires could be assessed…
Kat Kramer, a co-author of the report and the global climate lead at Christian Aid, said time was running out to tackle the climate crisis.

Experts said the extreme weather and record-breaking temperatures were clearly linked to human actions.
Michael Mann, the director of the Earth System Science Center at Pennsylvania State University, said: “If anything, 2019 saw even more profound extreme weather events around the world than last year, including wildfires from the Amazon to the Arctic, and devastating out-of-season simultaneous wildfires in California and Australia, winter heatwaves and devastating superstorms.
“With each day now, we are seemingly reminded of the cost of climate inaction in the form of ever-threatening climate change-spiked weather extremes.”…

Isn’t it wonderful. It was a perfect world before “Climate Change”. No Indian monsoons, no Cyclone Idai in East Africa, no Dorian and bushfires were unknown in Australia before the invention of Climate Change in 1988. Certainly no droughts or extreme heat in Australia or anywhere else. It was a wonderful happy world at peace. No volcanoes, no torrential rains, no people dying from the cold or heat and even no malaria or HIV and the Polar Bears would frolic in the Arctic snacking on seals. Certainly no Climate wars or refugees. A fantasy world long gone, sadly, since 22 June 1988 when it was announced by James Hansen and Al Gore to the US Congress. Now our only hopes are Elon Musk’s Tesla electric cars and submersibles and very big batteries.

the cheek of theirABC. Geraldine Doogue on Saturday Extra with a conspiracy theory Prof, who believes we or rather he & people like him should shame & embarrass people who believe in conspiracy theories they don’t approve of.

Geraldine begins by addressing the ABC audience: here’s a question for you – why do so many people – ***maybe even your good selves – believe conspiracy theories?

Geraldine, look in the mirror. for the past 3 years, the entirety of the ABC has squandered untold millions of taxpayer dollars promoting a ridiculous conspiracy theory, namely that Donald Trump colluded with Russians to stop Hillary becoming President!

too bad it’s been known for over 2 years that Hillary & the DNC funded the phony Steele Dossier to try to stop Trump becoming President & colluded with all sorts – domestic & foreign, too numerous to mention – to not only stop him, but to overthrow him once he won!
but who cares about all that at ABC?

after all, ABC’s Matt Bevan (whose father, Paul Bevan, was with ABC for 32 years – nice work if you can get it) is still busy with his “Russia, If You’re Listening” weekly podcasts – the latest dated 16 Dec 2019:
    https://www.abc.net.au/radio/programs/russia-if-youre-listening/

    TWEET: Matt Bevan, ABC
My whole life, my dad @paulbevo has been broadcasting an ABC radio show 5 days (and for a while 6 days) a week. From today if I want to hear his voice every day I’ll have to call him. He retires from ABC Newcastle at 6pm. The whole family is listening and we are all a mess
    12 Dec 2018

***for some reason, “climate change” is in the summary…but not in the actual interview (unless I fell asleep and missed it). not recommended listening. almost every line is a howler of some kind and, while there’s no mention of ABC’s Trump conspiracy theories, the Prof manages to mention Pizzagate twice, cos it was a conspiracy theory to stop Hillary:

19m55s: 28 Dec: ABC Saturday Extra: Geraldine Doogue: How conspiracy theories went mainstream
Conspiracy theories like the ones about 9/11, Sandy Hook and ***climate change have a political agenda and should not be ignored argues philosopher Quassim Cassam. But dismantling them is no easy task.
    First broadcast in September
Guest: Dr Quassim Cassam, professor of philosophy, University of Warwick
    https://www.abc.net.au/radionational/programs/saturdayextra/how-conspiracy-theories-went-mainstream/11765870

CAGW not being in the above doesn’t mean the Prof doesn’t include it in his writings:

Amazon: Conspiracy Theories (THINK) 1st Edition by Quassim Cassam
9/11 was an inside job. The Holocaust is a myth promoted to serve Jewish interests. The shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School were a false flag operation. Climate change is a hoax perpetrated by the Chinese government.
These are all conspiracy theories. A glance online or at bestseller lists reveals how popular some of them are. Even if there is plenty of evidence to disprove them, people persist in propagating them. Why? Philosopher Quassim Cassam explains how conspiracy theories are different from ordinary theories about conspiracies. He argues that conspiracy theories are forms of propaganda and their function is to promote a political agenda.

Although conspiracy theories are sometimes defended on the grounds that they uncover evidence of bad behaviour by political leaders, they do much more harm than good, with some resulting in the deaths of large numbers of people…

7 Oct: New Statesman: Why conspiracy theories are deeply dangerous
Such beliefs promote extreme political agendas and allow governments to dismiss their critics as cranks.
    By Quassim Cassam
Conspiracy theories about climate change are another example of this. There is evidence that such theories more likely to be endorsed by people with free-market ideologies. Why would that be? Presumably because, as committed free marketeers, they dislike the regulations that are needed to combat man-made global warming…

ends with BBC’s Roland Pease saying I can guarantee that next year we will be returning to global warming and its effects again and again and again…

too bizarre for me to listen to all:

AUDIO: 25m29s: BBC Science in Action: Gaming climate change
    Presenter: Roland Pease
The latest round of climate negotiations, COP25 have ended without agreement on many fundamental issues. We join researchers from Perdue(sic) University in the US who have developed a role playing game to encourage climate negotiators and others to take a long term view. Key to this research project is the concept of tipping points, where an environment changes irreversibly from one state to another. This is accompanied by the loss of ecosystems, for example the widespread melting of arctic sea ice, rainforest burning or coral bleaching.
The idea is that such tipping points provide a more meaning full focus for the implication of climate change than abstract concepts like temperature rise. Image: Polar Bear in the Arctic Sea

Oh what a surprise….coral surviving in higher temp water…

    https://mobile.abc.net.au/news/2019-12-28/the-coral-that-loves-climate-change/11817896

“Coral in the Gulf of Aqaba is thriving despite rising sea temperatures and scientists want to know why

“The Red Sea could be the last place in the world where coral reefs will survive.

    “Key points:

“Australian scientists are working with counterparts in Israel and Jordan to find out why coral in the Gulf of Aqaba is thriving despite rising temperatures

“Scientists believe it is genetically disposed to withstand warmer water

“Up to half of the Great Barrier Reef has been affected by bleaching

“Unlike corals in the Great Barrier Reef and elsewhere, the corals in the northern part of the Red Sea are not bleaching and dying when the sea temperature rises.

    “Instead, they are thriving.

“Bleaching, the phenomenon caused by global warming, has been one of the main reasons half of the world’s coral reefs have died in the past three decades.

“But in the northern Gulf of Aqaba, where Egypt, Israel, Jordan and Saudi Arabia share the coast, the corals are bountiful, colourful and healthy despite rising carbon dioxide and warming seas.

“”We’re seeing corals that are resilient to five, six degrees — even more degrees above summer maximum,” Professor Maoz Fine, from Israel’s Bar Ilan University, said.

“The Boxing Day Test may need to be moved to November or March in the future to avoid extreme heat, which is a danger to players and cricket fans, a new report has suggested.”

    Brilliant idea!

Monash Uni has found that heat due to climate change is a danger to our cricketers and fans.

Wow! if it is a danger for cricketers and fans enduring 42 C heat, then what about firefighters?

I propose that we stop firefighting when the temperature on the fireground exceeds 42 C.

I can report first hand, that in summer, it is significantly hotter than 42 C when you are standing next to a bushfire for hours on end, day after day. It is extremely uncomfortable.

I can sympathise with our cricketers and their fans. They are in danger and we need to stop their suffering.

I propose that we move the cricket and bushfire season to winter so as to lower the temperature on the cricket and fire grounds.

    We need to act now!!

Or a heat tax? It’s what governments do. There was always a concern that the only two things not taxed were sex and air. Now they tax the air. They could tax the temperature, which is always someone’s fault.

We are entering a socialist group think era. There is nothing a government cannot do, including changing the world’s temperature. In fact $1.5Trillion a year is being spent on this idea today, the biggest challenge since WW2 according to socialists.

28 Dec: Accuweather: 12 killed as plane crashes immediately after takeoff amid freezing temperatures
By Maura Kelly & Renee Duff
Weather observations from Almaty International Airport reported visibility below one mile (1.6 km) at the time of the crash due to foggy conditions. A Reuters reporter traveling to the airport also reported thick fog in the area.
“Temperatures were in the lower teens F (minus 10-12 C) at the time of the accident, so if the plane was not properly deiced, this could have been a factor,” AccuWeather Meteorologist Renee Duff said…

Preliminary investigation results concluded that the aircraft’s tail hit the runway twice prior to takeoff, indicating the plane was struggling to get off the ground, according to The Associated Press (AP)…

Nazaraliyev (who survived the crash) later told the AP that the plane’s wings were covered with ice when passengers were deplaning, a sign that the plane may not have been properly deiced before takeoff. However, government officials say the plane underwent proper deicing…READ ON

a classic from 2004. you would think The Guardian would be embarrassed by now. nah. not a chance:

22 Feb 2004: Guardian/Observer: Now the Pentagon tells Bush: climate change will destroy us
    · Secret report warns of rioting and nuclear war
    · Britain will be ‘Siberian’ in less than 20 years
    · Threat to the world is greater than terrorism
by Mark Townsend and Paul Harris in New York
A secret report, suppressed by US defence chiefs and obtained by The Observer, warns that major European cities will be sunk beneath rising seas as Britain is plunged into a ‘Siberian’ climate by 2020. Nuclear conflict, mega-droughts, famine and widespread rioting will erupt across the world.
The document predicts that abrupt climate change could bring the planet to the edge of anarchy as countries develop a nuclear threat to defend and secure dwindling food, water and energy supplies. The threat to global stability vastly eclipses that of terrorism, say the few experts privy to its contents…

The findings will prove humiliating to the Bush administration, which has repeatedly denied that climate change even exists…

Among those scientists present at the White House talks were Professor John Schellnhuber, former chief environmental adviser to the German government and head of the UK’s leading group of climate scientists at the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research. He said that the Pentagon’s internal fears should prove the ‘tipping point’ in persuading Bush to accept climatic change.
Sir John Houghton, former chief executive of the Meteorological Office – and the first senior figure to liken the threat of climate change to that of terrorism – said: ‘If the Pentagon is sending out that sort of message, then this is an important document indeed.’

Bob Watson, chief scientist for the World Bank and former chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, added that the Pentagon’s dire warnings could no longer be ignored…READ ON

As a New Year’s comment, I read Britebart and the comments by the Democrats. Has there ever been a man as evil as Donald Trump? The abuse he gets from archbishops, democrats, hollywood and by implication even the Pope is unprecedented for a US President, the undisputed leader and protector of the free world? And he is doing an extraordinary job in reducing unemployment, a booming economy, boosting American business around the world and finally confronting the dire problems in North Korea and Iran. And a fair trade deal with China.

But he is a Climate Denier, so he must be pulled down and even his wife and children attacked without care or mercy. You would sometimes wonder why he puts up with it and for how much longer he and his family can take it? Then, that is probably the idea. Like Boris Johnson and our own Scott Morrison, they represent the hopes and aspirations of millions of people who are being told Climate Change is the most important problem in human history, even if it does not exist. And no one bothers to prove it any more. Since 2017, to even question it is to be an evil denier, like Donald.

a US President, the undisputed leader and protector of the free world

I dispute it. He’s the US President — a very powerful man in a very powerful country — isn’t that enough?

Where exactly is this free world that accepts his leadership without question? Doesn’t sound very free to me.

Let’s leave “leader of the free world” to comic books.

behind paywall. UK Times is all in on CAGW:

27 Dec: UK Times: Greens won’t tell Germans how to live, says Robert Habeck
    by Oliver Moody, Berlin
The figurehead of Germany’s high-flying Green party has disowned the moralising tendencies of the environmental movement and said that people should be free to make their own choices in their private lives.
Robert Habeck, who is likely to play the role of kingmaker and possibly even chancellor in the next government, also levelled strong criticism at Russia and China as he set out a muscular foreign policy agenda in an interview with The Times.

The Greens have skilfully channelled a wave of public concern about climate change, positioning themselves as the only sizeable party with bold answers. But it also owes a good deal to deft branding, with the fervid idealism and sanctimonious lectures of the past largely discarded in favour of campaigns that are heavy on positivity and pragmatic liberalism. Unless the polls shift significantly before the next election, due in the autumn of 2021 at the latest, it is hard to see how Germany’s next federal government can be formed without the Green party, which commands more than 20 per cent of the vote. There is much conjecture that it will supply the next chancellor…

28 Dec: UK Times editorial: The Times view on how the Green Party in Germany is addressing more than just environmental challenges: Grown Up Greens
There are welcome signs of a new maturity in Germany’s main opposition party.
t is possible that one day soon Robert Habeck, co-leader of the German Greens, could find himself chancellor of his country. His party commands about 20 per cent of the vote. A governing coalition without Green involvement looks implausible. If Mr Habeck is indeed set for high office, he is starting to sound the part. There was a time when a Green party politician — almost any Green party politician — would have been both too sanctimonious and too naive to make a credible national leader. That time may be ending.

In an interview in our world pages today, Mr Habeck says he does not believe it is the business of government to tell its citizens how much meat they should eat or how many times a year they should get on an aeroplane…

The German greens are going moderate, to distance themselves from the hysterics.

The German Green Party sounds below like it is going moderate to distance itself from the hysterics, which probably includes Greenpeace Germany (which has revenue of tens of millions a year). The Greens versus Greenpeace could be a great fight. A green civil war. The question is how skeptics can use this schism to advantage?

Also how the Green Party does in the next national election may be very different from the last one, if there is a negative backlash against the hysterics. The Times may be very wrong there. This backlash is what the Green Party is trying to avoid. Telling people they cannot eat meat or fly is a losing election position if there ever was one.

Search Jo’s blog for “heatwave Sherrington” to find a couple of essays showing the six capital cities and their heatwaves from when the BOM records started. See graphs for heatwaves lasting 1, 3, 5, 10 days. In Sydney and Melbourne where the cricket crowds can exceed 70,000 people, there has been no significant change in how hot, how long, how often heatwaves occur.
Scientifically, ABC and Monash seem to have failed to check past hearwave studies, seeming to simply assume that global warming will make then hotter, longer, more frequent when the BOM original numbers do not show this for Sydney and Melbourne from the 1860s to now. Geoff S

When the climate alarmists realise that things are actually pretty normal they will not admit they were wrong. They will say that their actions stopped global warming and saved us all.

Question: when it “reports” its comical climate propaganda tryons like this, when will the ABC start using the (sarc.) tag? Answer: you’re kidding! That would require treating its readers like adults instead of gullible children.

Tony Heller shows some good stats on Aussie temps on boxing day. Bottom line – Aus may be getting cooler but no actual measurements prove its getting hotter.

Boxing Day Test cricket is a Melbourne affair so it’s worth looking at the history of Boxing Days (26 Dec) in RAW maxima for Melbourne Regional Office 86071 and Melbourne Olympic Park 86338 …

    1855-1937 – 24.96C
    1938-2019 – 25.19C
    Up 0.23C

If pre-Stevenson shelter accuracy is questioned …

    1910-1964 – 25.33C
    1965-2019 – 23.80C
    Down 1.53C

If average max are considered irrelevant, the average temp and frequency of Boxing Days with a maximum at or above 30C …

    1855-1937 – 34.60C (21 days above 30C)
    1938-2019 – 34.38C (15 days above 30C)
    Down 0.22C

    Stevensons …

    1910-1964 – 34.03C (15 days above 30C)
    1965-2019 – 32.80C (6 days above 30C)
    Down 1.23C

Test cricket lasts up to five days (26-30 Dec), so the averages of those days …

    1855-1937 – 24.85C
    1938-2019 – 25.63C
    Up 0.78C

    Stevensons …

    1910-1964 – 25.28C
    1965-2019 – 25.21C
    Down 0.07C

Average and frequency of 30C+ days in 26-30 Dec …

    1855-1937 – 34.35C (98 days above 30C)
    1938-2019 – 34.47C (104 days above 30C)
    Up 0.12C

    Stevensons …

    1910-1964 – 34.18C (71 days above 30C)
    1965-2019 – 34.37C (61 days above 30C)
    Up 0.19C

So if 1910-2019 is considered the acceptable screen timeframe, cricketers at the MCG in 1965-2019 endured a 14.1% lower frequency of hot days above 30C, and average maxima over the five Test days that are 0.07C cooler than was the case for the Don or anybody else who swung a bat between 1910 and 1964.

An argument might be put that days above 30C in 1965-2019 are 0.19C warmer than they were in 1910-1964, although from 1855 to 1909 they averaged 34.63C compared to 34.37C in 1965-2019 – 0.26C cooler.

Alternatively, it could be argued that in the 100 Test cricket days of 26-30 Dec since the year 2000, the average maximum was 26.18C, compared to 25.28C in 1910-1964. However, the 100 Test cricket days of 1935-1954 averaged 26.34C.

Melbourne has had 13 Boxing Test days (26-30 Dec) at or above 30C in the decade since 2010, but in the decade of 1910-1919 there were 15.

The data above include today and the forecast 43C in Melbourne on 30 Dec 2019.

The current Olympic Park weather station is less than a kilometre from the MCG, and it’s worth noting that Melbourne is an urban location not included in national temperature averages because the BoM acknowledges that city infrastructure has caused artificial UHI warming of one or two degrees.

Where is the evidence that climate change is causing more hot days at the MCG so that academics and the media can claim extreme heat may lead to the extinction of Boxing Day Test cricket?
