Do the BOM even care about Australia’s climate?
The hottest day ever recorded in Australia with modern official equipment was Jan 3rd, 1909 in Bourke where the temperature blistered at 51.7C (125F).
Yesterday the Honorable Craig Kelly MP trawled through historic archives looking for temperature records from a century ago to see if he could confirm that it really was 125F in Bourke that day, and whether it was almost that hot in Brewarrina too. Craig Kelly wants the record restored.
The site at Bourke is one of the oldest in Australia, starting in 1871. It’s also very influential because it was used to estimate the temperatures of vast remote areas around it. By 1909 there was already nearly 40 years of data at Bourke, and the Stevenson Screen had just been replaced so it was almost brand new. There was no airport tarmac either, so in 1909 the site was probably better than most modern sites are today. But the 1909 “hottest ever record” was deleted after an investigation in 1997 by Blair Trewin. It was written off as an error partly because it was recorded on a Sunday and the observer wasn’t normally at work. Supposedly a dedicated weather nerd wouldn’t pop in on a day off just because it was the hottest day of his lifetime. (Not when there were so many other exciting things to do in Bourke in 1909.)
Trewin argued that other surrrounding towns of Thargominda, Walgett and Coonamble were nearly 7 degrees C cooler than Bourke. But Brewarrina is closer and newspaper reports had the temperature there on that Sunday as 123F. But the BOM didn’t have official records for Brewarrina til 1911. So Craig Kelly took it up on himself to do the research the million-dollar-a-day BOM couldn’t do, and today he found the official records for Brewarrina, and lo, confirmed that the temperature there was 123F. So two different guys over 100 km apart recorded almost the same temperatures on the same day.
As we reported here in 2014, at Cobar it was 117F, in Goodooga, 123 and it was 117 at Riverstone. h/t Chris Gillham and Lance Pidgeon. So Brewarrina was not the only town nearby with extraordinary heat.
Despite the long history of the Bourke weather data, the good people of Bourke only hear about temperature records since the year 2000. Jennifer Marohasy found the son of one of the original weather observers in Bourke, and he’s frustrated that the careful work of his father is as good as forgotten. Mr Cole owns the local radio station but can’t broadcast the records his father observed because the BOM only supplies data to “weatherzone” from the year 2000.
The original handwritten log books were tossed in the trash and it’s only thanks to non-BOM dedication that they were rescued and saved from the dumpster.
If the day wasn’t digitized, does it exist?
Craig Kelly also uncovered the data for Whitecliffs, another town of the far outback in NSW. There in 1939 an observer recorded the second hottest Australian day (of the last 120 years) at 51.1°C (124°F).
That too is not officially acknowledged even though it was recorded in a Stevenson Screen. And the reason, Craig Kelly tells me, is because it hasn’t been digitized yet. Figure that! The greatest crisis is coming to destroy life on Earth but the BOM can’t find time to write up our old history. They get hundreds of millions of dollars of taxpayer funds and tell us the trends and records are accurate to a tenth of a degree, but they haven’t even bothered to manually go and fish out and type in the most extreme days as reported in newspapers all over the country.
Jennifer Marohasy, Craig Kelly and I all want to know — When with the BOM correct the record?
See the hand-written raw data in the photos as written up and explained by Jennifer Marohasy.

Hottest Day Ever in Australia Confirmed: Bourke 51.7°C, 3rd January 1909
The Australian Bureau of Meteorology deleted what was long regarded as the hottest day ever recorded in Australia – Bourke’s 125°F (51.7°C) on the 3rd January 1909. This record* was deleted, falsely claiming that this was likely some sort of ‘observational error’, as no other official weather stations recorded high temperatures on that day.
However, Craig Kelly MP has visited the Australian National Archive at Chester Hill in western Sydney to view very old meteorological observation books. It has taken Mr Kelly MP some months to track down this historical evidence. Through access to the archived book for the weather station at Brewarrina, which is the nearest official weather station to Bourke, it can now be confirmed that a temperature of 50.6°C (123°F) was recorded at Brewarrina for Sunday 3rd January 1909. This totally contradicts claims from the Australian Bureau of Meteorology that only Bourke recorded an extraordinarily hot temperature on that day.
Just today, Friday 10th July 2020, Mr Kelly MP obtained access to this record for Brewarrina, the closest official weather station to the official weather station at Bourke.
He has photographed the relevant page from the observations book, and it shows 123°F was recorded at 9am on the morning of Monday 4th January 1909 – published here for the first time. This was the highest temperature in the previous 24 hours and corroborates what must now be recognised as the hottest day ever recorded in Australia of 51.7°C (125°F) degrees at Bourke on the afternoon of Sunday 3rd January 1909.
That the Bureau of Meteorology denies these record hot days is a travesty. Is it because these records contradict their belief in catastrophic human-caused global warming?
The temperature of 50.6°C (123°F) recorded back in 1909 which is more than 100 years ago, photographed by Mr Kelly today at the National Archives in Chester Hill, is almost equivalent to the current official hottest day ever for Australia of 50.7 degrees Celsius at Oodnadatta on 2nd January 1960. These are in fact only the fourth and third hottest days recorded in Australia, respectively.
Not only has Mr Kelly MP tracked-down the meteorological observations book for Brewarrina, but over the last week he has also uncovered that 51.1°C (124°F) was recorded at White Cliffs for Wednesday 11th January 1939. This is the second hottest ever!
The evidence, a photograph from the relevant page of the White Cliff’s meteorological observations book, is published here for the first time.
Until the efforts of Mr Kelly MP, this second hottest-ever record was hidden in undigitised archives.
It is only through the persistence of Mr Kelly to know the temperatures at all the official weather stations in the vicinity of Bourke that this and other hot days have been discovered.
If we are to be honest to our history, then the record hot day at Bourke of 51.7°C (125°F) must be re-instated, and further the very hot 50.6°C (123°F) recorded for Brewarrina on the same day must be entered into the official databases.
Also, the temperature of 51.1°C (124°F) recorded at White Cliffs on 12th January 1939 must be recognised as the second hottest ever.
For these temperatures to be denied by the Bureau because they occurred in the past, before catastrophic human-caused global warming is thought to have come into effect, is absurd.
At a time in world history when Australians are raising concerns about the Chinese communist party removing books from Libraries in Hong Kong, we should be equally concerned with the Australian Bureau of Meteorology removing temperature records from our history.
If global warming is indeed the greatest moral issue of our time, then every Australian regardless of their politics and their opinion on greenhouse gases and renewable energies, must be honest to history and these truths.
* This temperature (125°F/51.7°C on the 3rd January 1909) was recorded at an official Bureau weather station and using a mercury thermometer in a Stevenson screen. Hotter temperatures were recorded in 1896 but the mercury thermometers were not in Stevenson screens, which is considered the standard for housing recording equipment.
The feature image shows Craig Kelly MP at The Australian National Archive, Chester Hill, just today examining the Brewarrina Meteorological Observations book.

Thanks so much for publishing/republishing this, Jo.
It was a huge amount of time and effort (because of all the obfuscation) for me to get access to the Bourke record (two photographs of the 125F) back in 2014. I got to view that record at Chester Hill, in western Sydney at the National Archive. Just yesterday, after months of detective work, because the BOM won’t just tell you were it is, Craig Kelly MP got access to the Brewarrina record, also archived at Chester Hill.
Here is a link to Blair Trewin’s thesis where there is also mention of the record hot day at Bourke being an observational error. https://minerva-access.unimelb.edu.au/handle/11343/37475
Separately,Craig got the Parliamentary Library to track down the White Cliffs record. It is extraordinary that this has not been found before. Full marks to Craig for his persistence, and use of all available mechanisms/processes.
Of course for some years you Jo, and others, have been asking for all these records to be digitised.

Blair Trwein is an incompetent fool.
He is too busy seeing the ‘future’ in his Bureau of Mystology crystal ball
To actually check out what previous BOM weather watchers did in previous times.
Blair Trewin should be sacked.
He is a false prophet of doom & gloom.
He is not a scientist at all.

A fool or something else Bill. I will not engage in defamatory comments here but I guess we sorta know what he is. Manipulator? There.

NOTE WELL : there is NO entry for the 3rd of January.
The observed temperature has been deleted or suppressed.
The fake prophet, Blair Trewin ‘at work’ again.
We, the taxpayers provide money to the BOM to employ competent & professional scientists.
Sack him !

Hello Bill, I just went into the link that you mentioned for the BOM’s record for temperatures at Bourke in 1909 and this is what I found.
“Your request cannot be completed
Our system has a problem and cannot complete your request.
Please go back to Climate Data Online and try again. If the error still occurs, please use our feedback form to let us know of the fault.”
Coincidence??? Don’t think so. Curiouser and curiouser. ToM
200
Yes the BOM is trying to hide their own records for Bourke !
However if you go to the Bom :
http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/data/?ref=ftr
Ask for temperature ( Not Rainfall )
And then type in or paste in the original Bourke station number 048013, where it says ‘station Number”
You get the complete record for the Bourke Post Office Weather station right back to the 1880’s.
And yes you can then find the data for 1909 with January 3rd empty.
In fact I’ve just noticed that the temperature has been omitted for all 5 of the Sundays in that month.
I wonder what Craig found when looking at the actual paper records ?
104
It looks at if every Monday temperature is an average of the Sunday and Monday temps – all the Mondays are flagged as “Not quality controlled or uncertain, or precise date unknown” with the actual record having a ‘hover tag’ of “2 days”.
10
The SOP was to record temperature at 9.00 am each day.
So the maximum temperature reading recorded on the Monday morning
Would in fact be for the previous day.
In this period a few big cities recorded temperatures at midnight because they had dedicated staff to do it at that time.
But it was uncommon.
Later on the BOM adopted as s SOP for all weather stations,
The practice of recording the minimum & maximum temperatures
For the past 24 hours, at 9.00 am each day.

The BoM follows the $$$$. To get them they believe they must lie. They are just another bunch of public servants with nearly all of their income dependent on government. Is it their fault the system is set up this way?
Anyone who gets free money from government needs to be subject to close scrutiny in regards to critical advice.
No-one is able to predict the climate using a computer program five years from now with ANY level of reliability.
No-one can show that their computer program matches measured data that occurred five years ago.
Politicians should NEVER use a BoM computer model to predict the climate five years in advance unless the model accurately matches the measured data five years previously.
This does not mean that we should not pay them to produce better models.
90
Yes it does.
Why? Because, to produce a better model they need to model non-linear chaos.
They’re thermometer-readers and paper-shufflers who apparently don’t understand the first thing about climate. Nor do they read their IPCC reports apparently:
“The climate system is a coupled non-linear chaotic system, and therefore the long-term prediction of future climate states is not possible.”
https://www.ipcc.ch/site/assets/uploads/2018/03/TAR-14.pdf
And of course, as it says:
“Models are of limited use without observations; the value of observations increases by interaction with models.”
Observations, aye? How does a modeller observe an observation that has been arbitrarily deleted?
120
I can understand your frustration in supporting people who have no useful direction. Much of government is rudderless. This is as much society’s fault as theirs. You get what you vote for….
40
A ‘good’ rudder, serfs think, is only as good as the compass on board that gives yer true north and south,
and on the ground or at sea, that means ‘what is actually the case,’ yer real-life data!… well that’s what
serfs think.

Trewin Thesis:
(1) “Furthermore, numerous media reports of heatwaves in the 1920’s and 1930’s, as well as a letter written in 1938 by the then Commonwealth Meteorologist, W.S. Watt, refer to the Australian record high temperature as being 125°F (51.7°C) at Bourke.” [p114]
So a thesis written in 1997 writes off the opinion of the Commonwealth Meteorologist, W.S. Watt writing in 1938.
Watt retired in May 1940 after becoming Commonwealth Meteorologist in 1931.
(2) “This leaves the Bourke observation of 3 January 1909 remaining for consideration…. no other station in New South Wales or southern Queensland is known to have exceeded 47.2°C on this day.” [p119]
Brewarrina was 47.2°C [116F]
(3) “However, 3 January was a Sunday, and no other observations were made on this day (as was the usual practice at Bourke, and many other stations, at the time). ” [p119]
and yet observations were made on Sundays at Brewarrina (see above).
(4) “Figure. 5.7 compares the temperature at Bourke with the mean of temperatures observed at Thargomondahh, Walgett and Coonamble on days when the daily maximum temperature at Bourke exceeds 40°C during the period 1959-95.” [p119] [emphasis added]
Brewarrina to Bourke = 97.6 km
Thargomondah to Bourke = 440.8 km
Walgett to Bourke = 231.7 km
Coonamble to Bourke = 345.9 km
Comparing period 1959-95 v 1909???
(5) “It is therefore likely that the observation is actually the maximum temperature for the 48 hours to 0900, 4 January, and therefore it would be affected by the same error which was corrected in the case of the 2 January observation.” [p119]
So, why was one error corrected and the other error not corrected?
I would have thought (or it can be reasonably expected or assumed) that in making such a correction both figures would be amended, not just one.
50
DLK thanks for those comments.
I did not understand you clearly so I went looking for his thesis
Here is the Abstract for Trewin’s 2000 Thesis :
“A high-quality set of historical daily temperature data has been developed for Australia. This data set includes 103 stations, most of which have data from the period between 1957 and 1996, and some for longer periods. A new technique, involving the matching of frequency distributions, is presented for the adjustment of temperature records for inhomogeneities at the daily timescale, and this technique is used in the development of the data set. A number of additional findings are presented on the impact of changing times of observation and accumulation of observations over periods longer than one day on the Australian temperature record. This data set was used for an extensive study of extreme temperature events in Australia. Widespread changes in the frequency of extreme temperature events in Australia were found over the 1957-1996 period. These changes were found both by an analysis or trends at individual stations and by analysis of spatial averages of indices of extreme temperature. In general, increases were found in the frequency of high maximum and high minimum temperatures, and decreases in the frequency of low maximum and low minimum temperatures. The changes were greatest for low minimum temperatures and least for high maximum temperatures, and were generally greatest in winter. The greatest decreases in the frequency of extreme low minima were found in Queensland. The trends were not universal, with trends opposite to those for Australia as a whole being found in some regions in some seasons. It was found, after examination of several possible models, that the frequency distribution of Australian daily maximum and minimum temperatures was best represented by a composite of two or three Gaussian distributions with different parameters. Using this model, it was found that the observed changes in temperature primarily resulted from changes in the means of the component distributions, indicating that the changes resulted principally from overall warming of the atmosphere rather than changes in circulation or air-mass incidence. The relationship between the frequency of extreme temperatures and the Southern Oscillation Index (SOl) was examined, with strong relationships being found in some seasons in many parts of Australia for most extreme variables, particularly high maximum temperatures. The weakest relationships were found for low minimum temperatures. Many of these relationships, except in winter, were as strong (or stronger) with the value of the SOl one season previously as they were with the SOl of the current season, indicating potential useful skill in the forecasting of seasonal frequencies of extreme temperatures in many cases.”
Lots of gobbledegook there ! For us mortal’s confusion no doubt.
And Trewin’s actual PhD thesis can be downloaded as a Pdf from this site : https://minerva-access.unimelb.edu.au/handle/11343/37475?show=full
I will take a look through it.
44
I assume records of the lowest temperatures recorded with this ‘faulty’ method have also been disregarded?
20
To the best of my knowledge and belief the temperature would’ve been recorded with a maximum/minimum mercury thermometer.
Having recorded an extreme temperature on a Sunday that recording would still show until reset, unless that recording was exceeded before reading.
Even if not attended to for the weekend it would still show the maximum temp fo the weekend on Monday morning

The BoM has tortured and distorted Australia’s excellent historical weather data to the point it no longer corresponds to the records kept in historical newspapers.
Why?
Alarm bells should be ringing!
“Dr Helen Cleugh from the CSIRO told the commission [global warming] was interacting with, and exacerbating, previous weather systems in a way never seen before.
“Perhaps put more simply,[global warming] means that the past is no longer a guide to future climate-related impacts and risks.”
https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-05-25/bushfire-royal-commission-hearing-updates/12282808#hail
Theoretically that makes this rubbish.
Someone tell the BoM …
We dug up Australian weather records back to 1838 and found snow is falling less often
https://theconversation.com/we-dug-up-australian-weather-records-back-to-1838-and-found-snow-is-falling-less-often-139300
And, what a waste of time …?
North-west Queensland’s 2019 monsoon was one of the biggest on record, bringing a cold snap and widespread stock losses
* Since then, the Bureau of Meteorology has been revising its warning system to better tailor it to graziers
* The BOM is looking to weather events from 2019 to adapt its alerts
Summer flooding is a regular event in the area and many graziers rely on it to sustain their businesses for the rest of the year.
But the 2019 monsoon was one of the biggest and most unusual on record and if the cattle survived the raging torrents, they died from a cold snap that coincided with the rain.
https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-02-02/revised-weather-messaging-aims-to-prevent-mass-cattle-deaths/11917146
Until the BoM can explain how carbon (sic) can cause both hot, dry, wet and cold simultaneously, I’ll call BS.

Delving through settlers’ diaries can reveal Australia’s colonial-era climate
“Of course, the next question is why? Why does the impact of El Niño and La Niña on Australian rainfall change over time? What happened in the mid-1800s? It might be El Niño’s cranky uncle, the Interdecadal Pacific Oscillation, or perhaps strange behaviour in the atmosphere around Antarctica.
We’re still not sure. But the weather observations taken by dedicated settlers more than 150 years ago are helping us answer these questions.”

‘Why does the impact of El Niño and La Niña on Australian rainfall change over time?’
Karoly asks the right question, precipitation is the key to how the system works. A very big La Nina is coming and there will be floods over the next couple of years, which should give us a glimpse of the major players.
A quiet sun may have an impact, but what are the mechanisms?
80
The moon may have an influence on ENSO behaviour.
‘New simulations show that Earth’s moon is not only unique in the solar system, but may also be rare throughout the universe. Research reveals that less than 10 percent of terrestrial planets may have a satellite large enough to provide the stability life needs to develop.’ Space.com
70
El Gordo ENSO is a recent term. SOI is the Southern Oscillation Index which is calculated from the atmospheric pressure differential between Tahiti and Darwin. It has been recorded since about 1850. A positive value monthly continuous over +10 is associated with a La Nina which gives more rain in Queensland particularly on the coast often due to cyclones and floods, while a negative monthly continuous more negative than -10 is associated with an El Nino which gives dryer conditions with less cyclones and drought. Tahiti has a relatively small tide change while Darwin has a large tide change. The daily SOI figures change over a month due to the lunar effect on tides at Darwin. For this reason SOI figures are based on monthly averages. Tides as one knows are also affected by the electical position of the moon around the Earth and the earth around the Sun. There cycles of positive and negative periods over years which can be seen in the Qld Longpaddock rainfall posters. each period has a length of 8 to 15 months and cycles somewhere around 9 to 13 years which is similar to the sunspot cycle.
30
Okay, thanks.
10
‘According to Gergis it’s too early to compare current climate change data with what we now know from the First Fleet records, but she adds “the further back you look the further forward you can see”.
That is correct, but I’m not sure about the weak La Nina.
20
In her book the Sunburnt Country she says the 1788-90 La Nina was very strong.
30
Australia’s first meteorologist knew nothing of ENSO, nevertheless we can trust his data, so a weak la Nina seems appropriate.
‘Despite the apparent presence of La Niña conditions from 1788–1790 in the Pacific basin (Gergis and Fowler 2009), the temperature and MSLP records kept by William Dawes do not show a signal strong enough to be classed as a La Niña event in Sydney.’ Gergis et al 2009
20
There is some mechanism whereby the cold surface/subsurface water moving East to west does not interact with the atmosphere which can probably be attributed to weak trade winds. That is low differential between Tahiti and Darwin which is ENSO. As we know, not all la Ninas are the same. We can’t pin all of our hopes on this event – all we can rely on is cloud formation due to the interaction of cold water meeting warm water and hopefully strong winds to push it towards us.
30
Dr Trewin recognises a weak La Nina.
“It is worth noting that we have seen some very significant extended heatwaves during weak La Nina summers, probably the most directly comparable event in recent times is 2008-2009,” he said. ABC

It sickens me that the original records were tossed in the trash. Fortunately they were saved in this one case but how many more from other sites have been destroyed? It is destruction of official government records and surely illegal, or should be? It’s also destruction of important historical records. In any case, as a scientist I was always taught to preserve original laboratory records (e.g. hand written notes) and from a scientific point surely this is the same? Regardless the original notes should be preserved to guard against the possibility of a transcription error, accidental or deliberate.
Here’s an interesting article about lab notebooks.

It has to be vandalism at the very least, as you said scientists know the importance of notes so how can nationally historic ones from an official ledger be delegated to the trash?

Morning Jo,
When I was a teenager (a long time ago in the 80’s), I was motivated by many things.
One of these was that … Evil only prospers, when good people do nothing! – Or words to that effect.
I am getting more and more nauseous every day at the lame-stream media’s compliance with “official party line/s”.
The global warming/climate emergency scam, and only adult black lives in the US. matter, are two things which are starting to make me repulsed by “traditional news services”. Something needs to change with journalism in the next couple of years because Australia (& the West generally) is at the start of a very slippery slope of irreversible multi-decade socialist oppression.
Maybe, just maybe, we might have been better off if the US. and Europe hadn’t of beaten Hitler, the pain would have been greater, but at least it probably would have take a lot less time for most to realise all the errors of Socialist’s ways!
(Yes all labor/green/democrat sympathizers, you have been sucked in by one of the greatest con-jobs in human history, Hitler was a socialist to!)
Which brings me to another enlightened motivator.
Those who don’t know the mistakes of the past, are condemned to repeat them.
The BOM., and all their labor/green/media cronies need a major reality adjustment.
Keep up the great work Craig, Jennifer & Jo.
Warmist regards,
Reformed warmist of Logan.

Agreed. Whether it be national socialism or international socialism, ultimately they both burn people and they are each an alternate interpretation of the one, evil, sick socialist ideology.
Here is a PragerU video on the matter. https://youtu.be/m6bSsaVL6gA There was another but YouTube are censoring (deleting) many PragerU videos since they are of a conservative orientation.

Why not stay on topic David ?

That’s how results are achieved.

Dave
Just saw this one. I have written to my Federal member as noted below. I have met with him, Stuart Robert, and spoken with him twice on climate and the BOM. He is the master of delay and is a true weathervane.
I will chase up his office. His secretary is actually quite friendly and maybe I can stir her up to chase him
Everybody on this blog needs to chase their member on this.

Ultimately this is all due to Rudi Dutchke’s subversive Lefist 1967 plan known as “der lange Marsch durch die Institutionen” (long march through the institutions) to create the conditions for socialism/communism by having the evil Left (a tautology, I know) infiltrate every single institution of Western Society, including government, education, public service, unions, private organisations etc.. Everything. It’s obviously worked and the evidence is all around us. It’s what Donald Trump calls, in today’s terminology, the “Deep State”.
The Left don’t respect history as shown by their preparedness to burn books and records, censor people (social media on the warpath to delete conservative accounts and all their records of having ever existed) destroy statues, rewrite history, redefine, alter, invent or delete words, make declarations that are obviously and provably untrue (until they destroy the original records as done here), etc..
It always ends up when they progress from burning books to burning people.
243
Once again :
Why not stay on topic David ?
Focus, focus, focus !
That’s how results are achieved.
125
It is all part of the bigger picture.
92
Distraction mate..
If we are to get anything changed,
We need to stay focussed..
120
Conservatives fail because they don’t see the bigger picture. That’s why we’re in the mess we’re in.
83
Are we all Melbournians now?
12
No,
Was once but NOT now.
The government there is too incompetent for words.
04
Orwell’s “1984” was not a dystopian novel, it was a prophetic work and an instruction manual for the Left.
. “Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And the process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right.”
“How could you make appeal to the future when not a trace of you, not even an anonymous word scribbled on a piece of paper, could physically survive?”
“Freedom is the freedom to say that two plus two make four. If that is granted, all else follows.”
“Don’t you see that the whole aim of Newspeak is to narrow the range of thought? In the end we shall make thoughtcrime literally impossible, because there will be no words in which to express it.”
“And if all others accepted the lie which the Party imposed—if all records told the same tale—then the lie passed into history and became truth. ‘Who controls the past’ ran the Party slogan, ‘controls the future: who controls the present controls the past.’”
243
Once again :
You are distracting from the main issue on this post.
Why ?
Stay relevant please.
026
It’s all part of the bigger picture. Conservatives fail because they don’t see the bigger picture.
153
No. You are wrong.
A ‘scatter gun’ approach
Will always fail.
Shoot at the target Jennifer & Jo & Craig have given.
217
Conservatives fail because they don’t see the bigger picture. The warnings about rewriting history is exactly the subject of this post and “1984” is the script that the enemies of truth follow.
143
David Maddison, thanks for your contribution. Good points.
111
Thanks mc.
53
I agree with David. We know that the BOM is trying to rewrite history and thanks to Jo, Jennifer, Craig Kelly and many others we are now fighting back. David’s comments, in my opinion, are pertinent.
30
Your ideology is showing
And getting in the way of being useful.
019
Well done Craig, well done Jo and well done those driving nails into the fervently apocalyptic catastrophist narrative.
290
Totally agree, in particular the influence of Jennifer Marohasy as a driving force.
180
For shits and giggles I thought I would loo up the BOM’s data on White Cliffs to see the 1939 ‘official’ values.
This page – http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/data/index.shtml – shows White Cliffs and its nearest weather stations
White Cliffs, NSW 30.85S, 143.08E
048129 White Cliffs AWS NSW (0.6km away) – data starts in 2005
046012 Wilcannia Aerodrome AWS NSW (79.4km away) – data starts on 2000
046043 Wilcannia (Reid St) NSW (83.6km away) – data starts in 1957
The BOM are not providing the resources for any of us to look at and they are apparently not using, the records that are supposed to be informing us of long-term trends.
Has anyone found the 1939 BOM data for White Cliffs and/or the other sites mentioned in this blog post?
I’d like to see what the BOM are using to justify their claims that Bourke’s record was an outlier.
100
The data download for Bourke Post Office (048013) has no data for 10th January 1909 and 4th January 1909 has the highest temp for the month at 45.3C = 113.5F
the 9th and 11th of Jan are recorded as 32.9C and 37.2C respectively
Why is the higher manually recorded figure not in the data file? Conspiracy theorists would like to know.
130
The linked chart is from the BoM site for White Cliffs in January:
http://www.bom.gov.au/jsp/ncc/cdio/weatherData/av?p_display_type=dataGraph&p_stn_num=046042&p_nccObsCode=36&p_month=01
This is the average maximum for the entire month. The daily maximums are not available till 1962.
The average of daily maximums for January 1939 is well above any of the succeeding January average of maximums. It would be reasonable to expect the record temperature to occur on one of the days in January 1939 or possible a couple of years earlier.
30
OOPS! Typo in that 1939 should have been 1909
The data I downloaded was for 1909
Blame being late for my morning coffee
40
Trove still exists – for the moment: https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/103670939?browse=ndp%3Abrowse%2Ftitle%2FG%2Ftitle%2F368%2F1909%2F01%2F05%2Fpage%2F10007307%2Farticle%2F103670939#
80
The historical record in Trove needs to be rewritten. I’m sure they can make an artificial intelligence bot to find those old records and alter the record with appropriate image manipulation to make the change undetectable.
This is sort of what Winston Smith is doing in this scene from “1984”.
https://youtu.be/gmY_bniRT2U
53
That the Bureau of Meteorology denies these record hot days is a travesty. Is it because these records contradict their belief in catastrophic human-caused global warming? Should that not read”their financial commitment to catastrophic global warming”
130
I can see the submissions from CSIRO and BoM at the fire commission looks like a general meeting of the Politburo. Listen to us, the 3xperts and keep funding us more- just so we can keep you safe. Just like our ABC.
100
The BoM obviously cannot be relied upon for authentic weather records.
What reliable unaltered data sources are there?
72
Do they actually record anywhere when they have altered or deleted original data? How is it possible to detect it without prior knowledge of the record hot day as in this case?
92
A vast majority of the old data has been digitised and is available on the BoM website. So anyone who cares can actually get the digitised data. Her is an example:
http://www.bom.gov.au/jsp/ncc/cdio/weatherData/av?p_display_type=dataGraph&p_stn_num=047007&p_nccObsCode=36&p_month=13
Make certain you untick the box that gives only operating sites.
It is quite evident that this data needs considerable world’s best practice homogenisation to get a steady upward trend.
The official record is the world’s best practice homogenised data. The world’s best practice is to homogenise the data to fit the climate models that require an increasing temperature as a log function of the increasing CO2.
If the temperature goes up and down then it has not been correctly homogenised to thee World’s Best Practice Standard. Get with THE science! The science requires a steady rising trend in temperature. Anything not meeting that criteria is anti-science.
Homeginisation demonstrates the arrogance of the dingbats who infest the BoM and other weather monitoring authorities around the globe.
All of the investment to fight catastrophic climate change is based on the official record that matches the climate models. Could you imagine the uproar in the ABC if they found out they were being duped by the BoM.
60
Not ‘Dingbats’ Rick.. They are ‘Prophets’ !
With magical flat crystal screens.
All upgraded from the magical crystal balls of former generations !
Not science at all !
14
Wanaaring has records going back to 1884 at the post office site and is roughly between White Cliffs and Bourke ,no doubt these recordings have been “Homogenised ” but I wonder if Craig and Jennifer found the original recording sheets .
http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/averages/tables/cw_048079.shtml
Wanaaring has two recording stations the AWS version is over 100 kilometres away just to add confusion and it’s also the shonkiest .
30
Prime Minister Craig Kelly – has a nice ring to it.
We need to work out how to get this man into the top job.
Imagine having a sensible, industrious individual in the top job willing to call out nonsense.
150
We had one, good ole Tony A.
Look what happened to him…
160
Lord Monckton warned about the danger to Tony Abbott’s prime ministership if he didn’t follow the UN on climate policy.
https://youtu.be/NG0WcjGHkEw
183
David, I yield to no-one in my contempt for the UN, but I really don’t like conspiracy theories that imply they “removed” Abbott. Abbott self-defenestrated in one of the worst self-inflicted political demises ever seen. The Sir Prince Duke Philip of Edinburgh SA 5111 was simply ludicrous and was the last straw of Abbott deciding to immolate his own mandate. I don’t believe the UN talked him into that one.
111
James, I know this is off subject, but the Queen requested that Tony Abbott match other Commonwealth countries (NZ and Canada for example) and provide Prince Phillip with an Australian honour. Do you think Tony could have refused. That he did not use the Queen’s request as a cover says much about this man.
60
David, Monckton also warned about Stephen Harper’s Prime Ministership of Canada, and he went the same way. ToM
111
An Australian PM can only knight The Duke once. Hopefully Craig would be smart enough to avoid such folly.
30
Yes, it was this curious knighthood which sank Abbott’s boat.
Who’s a thunk that in 2015
Aussies needed the British Duke of Edinburgh to be knighted ?
012
The Knighthood was awarded for his many decades of service to the Commonwealth of Nations, Australia was one nation nomination.
30
I don’t think it was a highlight of his term, but the Duke certainly deserved the AK if you read the description of his service. At worst, it was a minor political error that hurt nobody – unlike (for example) rejecting ADF assistance with quarantine supervision.
20
iirc, the Queen actually requested that he do it.
Would have been awkward to say no.
50
Actually only the Monarch/Queen can award a Knighthood.
Prime Ministers and Cabinet can however nominate a person for that award, as PM Abbott did when requested by Buckingham Palace on behalf of the Queen, she apparently requested nominations for her husband from Commonwealth of Nations member countries for his services to the Commonwealth.
30
thanks for the clarification 🙂
40
Yes, exactly what I thought, RickWill.
In fact I often think similar things about this person or that person … until reality comes crashing back.
This whole climate thing is HUGE!
Its main nest is currently the U.N. (formerly The Club of Rome). The U.N.’s main subsidiary is the E.U.
Its tendrils reach into most governments and oppositions in most countries – so that you may think voting for one or the other party is actually a choice, when it’s really just a question of how quickly or slowly the same climate policies are implemented.
Perhaps worst of all, the major media are owned by the same people responsible for the deception. Journalists no longer question anything but simply propagate the required message. No one dares to disagree.
Even the great majority of scientists know better than to “stick their heads above the parapet”, as naturalist David Bellamy put it when explaining to an interviewer how his career was ended because he dared to describe manmade climate change as “poppycock”. And he wasn’t the only scientist to learn the truth the hard way. (e.g. Susan Crockford, Robert Carter, and Peter Ridd.)
Unfortunately, disappearing temperature records don’t represent sloppy record keeping. Manipulated temperature figures which have turned cooling into marked warming are not examples of silly mistakes. It isn’t that meteorological bureaus in most countries haven’t noticed that weather stations are now situated next to large buildings, major highways, and airport runways.
You simply can’t make that many mistakes by accident.
It’s all quite clearly part of a global plan.
I’m a great admirer of Craig Kelly, and no one wishes him more luck than I do, but think about climate realist Tony Abbott. He was already the Prime Minister when it became apparent to “The Green Blob” that he was against climate alarmism. And despite his status, they managed to bring him down.
Similarly, Craig Kelly would receive such savage systematic denigration by the media if he were to run for the highest office that he would stand no chance of success. There are no depths ‘THEY’ will not sink to in order to destroy any opposition to their agenda.
I think we have to stop imagining this is a question of good science overcoming bad science; that all we have to do is explain the truth often enough and people will come to see it and understand it and reject climate alarmism.
In reality, this is a question of politics.
The CO2 climate scam is just a tool; an implement being used to destabilise our current system by controlling the single most important asset we have – the power supply.
But regardless of my cynicism, I hope Mr Kelly takes this further. I hope he writes a book. I hope he gathers allies and makes a lot of noise in parliament. I hope he is supported by the last few honest and courageous journalists in Australia.
Who knows? It might make a difference.
140
“They” didn’t bring Abbott down.
Abbott brought Abbott down.
No-one was sadder about it than me, but he blew it.
Where do I start? The cushy jobs for Stott-Despoja and Combet – if they were any good, the private sector would have employed them. They should have been encouraged to find this out. This was the first ominous sign of the Abbott government trying to curry favour with people who would never, ever vote for the Coalition and who, in fact, will work tirelessly to bring it down.
All governments say “we will govern for all Australians,” but it is understood as election-night rhetoric. To give them credit, the ALP ruthlessly governs for its constituency, the unions, the public-sector empires it has built to employ its people, and the bevy of tax-eaters it encourages, to employ the overflow. It makes no bones about this: it is utterly brazen.
Abbott should have been open about governing for the Coalition’s constituency, the productive economy, and every small business person desperate to get out from under the suffocating regime of regulation that the Left has put it under.
And the gaffes – where do I start?
· The Cigars?
· The “poor people don’t drive” comment?
· The egregious and completely dishonest Temporary Deficit Levy – while not touching the mountain of waste and bloat in Canberra and duplication between the three levels of government?
· The $200 million UN Climate Fund handout – where did Bishop think this money came from?
· The gutlessness over 18C – with the state now able to punish someone for “offending” or “insulting” someone else, when these were totally subjective offences?
· The failure to bring the ABC and the Human Rights Commission to book, when those entities were just laughing at the Australian public.
· The terrible “look” of the token Defence Force pay rises and the $7 Medicare co-payment, when the public service/ABC were not slashed? Didn’t Abbott understand that that sort of thing can be sold only if the belt-tightening was government-wide? Why didn’t they say they would freeze all pay rises for all government employees until the budget was in surplus – no exceptions. (This most particularly applied to the Rolls-Royce of unaffordable measures, Abbott’s PPL.)
All of this could have been borne by those who fight on the Coalition’s behalf, on the Twittersphere, at dinner parties, and everywhere else where Australians speak, if those people could just have some faith that the government had a backbone and at least believed in something, that it thought long and hard about the things that it said and did, so that those statements and actions gave some heart to Coalition supporters that the 2013 electoral mandate was not going to be given up without a fight, was not going to be pissed away in a mishmash of bumbling, incompetent pandering to opponents, and shooting itself in the foot – and that the government had an agenda and a core purpose and intention to change the country for the better, and that it could articulate that in a way that made its supporters proud to have voted the way that they did.
But instead, we got Sir Prince Philip of Edinburgh South Australia 5111. Has anything more laughable, irrelevant, ridiculous, ludicrous and just plain politically stupid ever been proposed by an Australian politician? It was weapons-grade, industrial-scale stupidity and crass political insanity.
It was the last straw, and he deserved to go for it.
12
Unfortunately too many Australians think they know politics and governance but they really don’t know much.
Commonwealth of Australia was formed by the Colonies, Federation of States, similar but not the same as the United States of America. Ours is UK Westminster System of Government but with some US Constitution added.
A Prime Minister is the most senior member of a Cabinet of Ministers, decisions are by show of hands and/or secret ballot by all Cabinet Ministers including the Prime Minister.
PM Abbott was handicapped from day one when he became Opposition Leader in 2009 by the very slim majority on which he was appointed PM. And his political enemies sought to undermine him as leader, leaked anonymously about Cabinet discussions and generally smeared him, effectively undermining the Coalition in the process. The Turnbull Black Hand Faction of L.I.N.O. MPs (Liberals In Name Only) even utilised the Union Labor activist organisation GetUp to get Abbott, “relentless negativity”, aided by the ABC-SBS and MSM leftists.
Most of what you listed are Cabinet decisions, and often PM Abbott was defeated, like his proposal for an independent audit of the BoM.
40
There are notes in red handwriting defacing many of these early records. This is bad, rather like writing on an original painting in an art gallery or old Rock cave.
Does anyone know the offender(s)?
I have many photos of pre-1900 official Australia T records with similar red scribbles, perhaps the early stages of falsifying the record in the idealistic “homogenising” effort. Geoff S
150
I do not understand why Craig Kelly, Jo Nova, Geoff Sherrington and all the others do not create a movement to establish a Royal Commission into the corruption of the weather records undertaken by the Bureau of Meteorology.
The point is that Australia is sacrificing its economic and cultural future to a group of scientists who are political activists who are practising their political science to the detriment of the scientific record.
The time for complaints should be over. It is time for accountability for the Bureau of Meteorology for its re-writing of our climate history to serve political rather than scientific interests.
140
That it has not happened as yet is not for lack of trying

Australia pays a large fortune to the ABC for reporting the news and, one would think, high standard of investigative journalism.
So a simple question – why does a member of parliament need to conduct his own investigation into official data tampering? Surely the ABC should be all over temperature data homegenisation.
210
A very pertinent point.
60
Rick
Well that provided a likely unique photo of a politician actually doing research.
And, short of a reformation, much more authentic than quoting something from “Their ABC”

Bourke was actually cooling by a tiny amount before the AWS was installed

The reason the temperature was 123 F at Brewarrina on the 4th of January was because the wind was from the NW indicating that a large high in the Tasman Sea was causing an easterly air flow over the Qld coast and then NW winds down over Central Australia and the Simpson desert to that part of NSW. Nothing to do with CO2 and exactly what happens today in summer from time to time.
120
Not quite as hot as Brewarrina but definitely the ‘hottest day evah’ recorded to date in NSW on 27th December 1790 as reported by Watkin Tench 109˚F at 14:20 hrs Sydney Cove as one of “the hottest we ever suffered under at Sydney” and guess what, the wind was from the NNW “felt like a blast from a heated oven”….”the sky hazy”. Gee I reckon there might have been a fire or two somewhere out in the bush. The next day was similar but good ol’d Sydney town put on a southerly buster I suppose and the temperature dropped from 102˚F at 13:00 to 89˚F at 13:15 then 73 at 17:00. CO2 levels traditional at the time one assumes.

Craig Kelly has received much criticism from the ABC and other far left media groups for questioning the BOM’s credibility. Now he proves himself right 🙂
The implications of this data validation run deeper than the actual record, as it questions the validity of all historical BOM data. In particular, the finding of an entirely new record at White Cliffs in 1939 highlights either gross incompetence or systemic dishonesty within the BOM that is damning to their credibility and will erode public trust. The bad news for the BOM and their climate comrades is that Kelly is not a quitter and will pursue this matter in the parliament. Hopefully we will see a full independent inquiry into these records, including the dubious homogenization process and heads should roll.
230
Even in the outback, I can picture the weatherman at his post.
The best word to describe what was happening?
Diligence.
What has happened since, to those carefully detailed records, is nothing less than disgusting, unscientific, criminal action.
Thanks to all those who have brought this back to public view again.

I have sent a report to the AFP, claiming it is a Commonwealth crime.

I am trying to understand whether the BOM is just incompetent or engaging in malfeasance, either way they have been captured by the green, socialist, warmest movement and therefore nothing the BOM says can be regarded as correct.
80
Everything these days seems to be far queued.
I’ve just about had enough.
40
And when the queue stretches all the way out to Bourke, we really are in a mess.

As I understand it, the BOM has 500 people and they have been going for over 114 years, since 1906, before the movies, radio, WW1.
And in 114 years they have not had time to ‘digitize’ the old records? Really?
You could have typed them in quickly enough, and they have had something like 50,000 man years to do it? Obviously far too busy to create a perfect digital copy
of Australian records, some of the best in the world and oldest. And they are so important, given that we are easily the largest landmass in the bottom 1/3 of the planet
where 2% of the people live. And without the upheaval of Argentina and Chile, our records are continuous and the best.
So what do they do? How many are involved in homogenizing and climate models rewriting history without even bothering to record it? How many lives were spent in the
19th century taking careful measure of wind and temperature and humidity to have their hand written life’s work eaten by mould and age and silverfish while 500 people
are having coffee?
I would have thought our temperature records were absolutely critical to establishing this Global Warming which has cost this country so much.
Is that why the Federation drought is left out?
And what if our part of the world had not warmed at all? You cannot just extrapolate it from Europe. And why use tree rings when you had thermometers?
I would have thought forecasting the weather was very profitable. It’s always the very big item on the news and critical for just about everyone.
I would have thought it was totally automatic? So again, what do they do? What else is there to research except history? Everything else is automatically recorded.
It’s a bit like delivering mail in the world of email and sms and Facebook.
So Defund the BOM. That’s the new expression, isn’t it?
152
TdeF:
The BoM is trying to fit a climate model for the Australian continent, but the continent isn’t cooperating so it is necessary to move the model to a more compliant place. Laputa would be ideal** but inaccessible so the choice lies between CloudCuckooLand and NeverLand.
**see Gulliver’s travels.
60
Someone needs to hold BOMs feet to the fire, as they are clearly acting outside the scope of power conferred on them by their empowering legislation.
110
BoM must have the same immunity the ABC enjoys.
sarc
80
Not really. The ABC has a charter so that it can be pseudo independent, a charter which stipulates unbiased reporting but allows them great freedom without responsibility. And I do not see why they are not bound by the same coverage rules which limit others like Murdoch or Stokes. No care and no respondiblity and $1,200,000,000 a year.
The BOM though will be under direct government control. It should be held to account, justify its existence.
And if they cannot find time in over 100 years to digitize the hand written records, fire the lot of them and pay for someone else to do it.
111
“The Bureau of Meteorology is an Executive Agency of the Australian Government responsible for providing weather services to Australia and surrounding areas.”
Headquarters location: Melbourne
Employees: 1,663 (at 31 May 2015)
Annual budget: 279.3 million AUD (2015–2016)
Minister responsible: The Hon Sussan Ley MP, Minister for the Environment
Parent organization: Department of the Environment
So on what do they spend their $279.3Million. $168,000 per person
52
What do they do with our money?
They buy supercomputers to run their useless models on.
https://www.zdnet.com/article/bom-gets-cray-supercomputer-for-weather-prediction/
Oh, and BoM staff also use their desktop computers to mine Bitcoins.
https://www.finder.com.au/bom-workers-with-australias-most-powerful-supercomputer-mine-bitcoin-on-desktop-instead
61
And how much of (a) is fully automated or satellite, supplied from overseas. What does someone in the BOM actually do at work? They don’t make anything. No one hand draws barometric charts. Is it like the SBS, ethnic radio and television in the age of the internet? Or the ABC which was a radio station and now much bigger than any commercial broadcaster?
This is metastasis, uncontrolled growth without direction or purpose. Like the ABC firing people because their indexing of their budget has slowed.
Would we miss them? Or the CSIRO, the problem solvers. What problems have they solved? And how is that cloud seeding going. 50 years, two lifetimes of failure from what I have read.
Is no one minding the shop while the poor taxpayer gets demands for more money?
102
Thanks Jo.
I have forwarded this to my Federal Member, Stuart Robert and also reminded him of previous correspondence and a meeting where he agreed with me that a “certain ideology” had overtaken the BOM. He has still failed to step forward on this issue unlike Senator Gerard Rennick who has also been asking hard questions of Dr Johnson, who presides over this unscientific and ideologically compromised organisation. Craig Kelly is also acting on Australians behalf by exposing this wasteful organisation.
I would suggest that all who read this blog also get in touch with their Federal Member or Sussan Ley our Environment minister, who I have also never had answers from on the BOM. Why is the BOM allowed to get away with tampering, deletion and incompetence related to maintaining their stations, which Kens Kingdom found OVER HALF did not comply with the BOMs own standards? They get away with it because our govt and all Australians let them get away with it.
Time to stop being silent on this and thanks again for your tireless work in this area.
160
I would like wages for the time I have spent contacting my Federal and State representatives and others on this and many other climate change hoax matters over many years, and apart from acknowledgements, but not always, replies are few and far between and have mostly contained waffle od no substance.
60
Greg Hunt has a lot to answer for.
10
Thanks indeed for your indefatigable endeavour to uncover this. It seems that the current belief of many scientists is that our ancestors were dunces who did not understand what they were doing.
Whatever happened to “seeing far because we are standing on the shoulders of Giants”?
80
You could bet your socks that we’ll know about it if similar temperatures are measured this summer! Pity they’ll “forget” the older data.
Cheers,
Speedy
30
It is not difficult to see why the Bourke Post Office was replaced by a new AWS site in 2000:
http://www.bom.gov.au/jsp/ncc/cdio/weatherData/av?p_display_type=dataGraph&p_stn_num=048013&p_nccObsCode=36&p_month=01
1896 is the standout in this monthly average of maximum temperature but the highest is 48.6 in that year. 4th Jan 1903 got to 49.7C; still 2C lower than the figure for 1909.
10
I remain extremely frustrated and angry that ever since PM Abbott proposed in Cabinet that due diligence, that an independent audit be conducted at the BoM, following complaints from Jennifer Marohasy and colleagues that the Minister tabled in Cabinet, most Ministers voted against the proposal that even since BoM have been allowed freedom to continue to be creative accountants.
110
Well done. one record found and changed? How does that change the 30 year baseline for climate?
More to the point, what would be required to change the weather data to suit the no warming hypothesis?
How many records in how many stations, in how many countries?
118
As you are a “Doubting Thomas” Fitz
It’s your job to go & find out
By sticking your finger in the BOM’s incompetent wounds
There to find the sticky blood due to BOM’s stupidity.
15
Peter:
many of the “records of warming” only result from changes made to the data. NASA (GISS Labs.) are notorious in this area.
And, by the way, how do you know what the temperature of the earth was in 1855? The HADCRUT data is considered “the best and most accurate” of the Climate data bases but from 1855 to 1858 the figure for the southern hemisphere was from one thermometer (in what is now Indonesia). ONE thermometer for half the Earth.
70
Sorry, pushed the wrong button.
We could change that ONE RECORD to something else e.g. one of those 2 towns in Colombia where the records show 2 months averaging over 80℃. THERE fixed it for you, ONE CHANGE and the whole problem of man made global warming would disappear.
50
Prior to the expunging from the official record of our pre-1910 temperatures, Australia provided much of the Southern Hemisphere data. That the early data is now based on temperatures from a chain of islands straddling the equator defies logic and beggars belief!
20
Oh I see, a global conspiracy, where all records are fabricated to show warming.
Why?
Who benefits?
What size is the cabal behind this?
Remember it is global, and has been going one for decades.
111
Your attempts to DENY that the data is adjusted world-wide are “quaint” to say the least.
Rabid activist are in charge of all the major temperature data sets.
Yes, they have been tampering with the data since the AGW meme was invented. !
Thanks for pointing that fact out. !
That is why the homogenisation routines were invented, to justify data tampering.
101
it is well established that theoretical biases can influence the way people see the world.
these biases can create systematic errors aka confirmation bias or selection bias.
this leads to the creation of a kuhnian paradigm.
60
“Why?
Who benefits?
What size is the cabal behind this?”
LOL, you really haven’t been paying even the slightest attention, have you
Deliberately UNAWARE ????
The MONEY available for the climate trough is ENORMOUS. !
Grants, employment, prestige, POWER…..
70
And Andy, don’t forget the renewable rent seekers – they have profitted immensely from this fraud.
10
People in government and their clients benefit.
Perhaps it is less a conspiracy than a community of economic interest.
Absent fear of global warming, alternative energy research is a curiosity in the universities, small projects at the energy companies, and a nascent industry in solar cell
for remote uses and lawn lights.
With the fear, it is billions in subsidies, major power to regulate and shuttle money around with a little sticking at each shuttle point, and tens of thousands of new
government and government dependent jobs. Falsehood induced fear is their rice bowl, hence the common interest without need to formally conspire.
A concise answer, Peter.
20
You really are ignorant, Ditzy (that’s my phone doing that). The data is fabricated. They average a made up temperature for each section of the Earth as if it had an even spread of good records, which is not even close to reality.
The argument is whether their reconstruction is close to what it would be if there was a good record, or is there bias towards a supporting a theory. Do you want an example of why I think the latter?
10
Warmest period in Australia was around the late 1800s, early 1900s
Also the period of Australia’s longest drought.
Attempts are made to DENY this, by erasing actual data.
With the accuracy of current temperatures due to the deficiencies in site continuity being highly questionable..
.. and taking into account the accuracy of old and new data..
.. it is likely there is no significant warming over Australia since the early 1900s.
https://meteo.lcd.lu/globalwarming/Frank/uncertainty_in%20global_average_temperature_2010.pdf
(Too much maths for you to comprehend, though, Peter.)
100
So the change in one record for one date in one location makes no difference, according to you and your decades old paper. Thanks for the support.
28
I knew the maths was too much for you.
Your lack of comprehension is quite laughable.
Hottest temperatures recorded in Australia are from around just after 1900.
Get over it. !!
40
Have you found any empirical evidence for warming by atmospheric CO2 yet ?
We are all still waiting !!
70
“what would be required to change the weather data to suit the no warming hypothesis”
Easy, just REVERSE all the data changes applied by HadCru/NOAA/GISS …
… and make proper allowance for urban encroachment of thermometers, movements to airports etc etc
Even as it is, because of measurement inaccuracies both past and present, it is likely that there is no significant warming anyway. ! (see above)
60
‘ … what would be required to change the weather data to suit the no warming hypothesis?’
I want them to digitise everything, including the data from amateur weathermen on sheep stations, so we can make up our own minds.
50
The global raw data is available from several sources, UHA springs to mind, also Hadley in GB, and you can download the BOM dataset anytime. Warming is a fact, we are really arguing about the cause.
06
Any warming is from solar effects, as shown by UHA data (no warming except at El Nino events)
or from urban encroachment on surface sites
As you continually prove, there is absolutely no evidence of warming by human released CO2
The slight NATURAL warming since the LIA has been entirely BENEFICIAL to all life on Earth, as has the increase in atmospheric CO2.
The warmest temperatures in Australia were measured around the start of the 1900s.
There has been no significant warming since then.
30
‘Warming is a fact, we are really arguing about the cause.’
I’ve got it, heatwaves are more common during La Nina.

“NOAA / NCDC have Fudged and Corrupted the Input Data Series
A sidebar on data corruption from thermometer deletions:
The GHCN input data to GIStemp “has issues” (they -NOAA/NCDC- deleted 90% or so of the thermometers between about 1990 and 2009…) with those deletions focused on cold places. This is the second set of reports most folks ought to read. We explore that here:
https://chiefio.wordpress.com/2009/11/03/ghcn-the-global-analysis/
And find what is most likey the key coordinating factor behind the ‘agreement’ between HadCRUT (UEA / CRU i.e. the “Climategate” folks), NCDC (the GHCN adjusted series and GHCN data fabricators), and GIStemp. They all use GHCN and the GHCN set has been “buggered” with the deletion of cold thermometers from the recent data (but they are left in the baseline periods. Even the Japanese temperature series depends on GHCN). This, IMHO, is the biggest problem and is the most important ‘issue’ in the apparent fraud of AGW. When you are ‘cooking the books’, literally, I have trouble finding any more polite word than fraud…”

No Peter, many records have been found to be changed.
Read Jennifer Marohasy’s blog and learn.

The Sydney Morning Herald on 8 Jan 1914 reports 125 in Bourke in 1909.
https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/15480253?searchTerm=temperature%20bourke%20and%201909
That is, within 5 years of the initial 1909 recording.
If it was an error, why did no one step forward to say it was an error.
Presumably (and it is reasonable or probable to so presume), because it was not an error.
150
Great find your lordship. I hope that Craig Kelly sees that.
70
Peter – Send it to him
craig.kelly.mp@aph.gov.au
He is the only MP who has responded personally to my emails. Let him know his efforts are appreciated.
80
The weather station in 1909 was located in the back yard o the Bourke Post Office
As were many weather stations at that time.
Blair Trewin believes that the reading for the 3rd of January 1909 is wrong because it was a Sunday
And the post office manager was not on site.
However take a look at this photo of the Bourke Post Office
: https://www.environment.nsw.gov.au/heritageapp/visit/ViewAttractionDetail.aspx?ID=5044737
It was built in 1880 with two stories and lots of rooms.
It was not just a post office desk..
I suggest that the post office manager lived on site.
Blair Trewin has made an unjustified assumption !
And thus was very able to observe the readings of the tempeature gauge.
94
There is even a hills hoist out the back
probably not dating from 1909, but supports what you are saying.
30
The Hill’s Hoist was invented in 1945.
21
It was normal practise for post offices, banks, railway stations and others to have accommodation attached.
40
“Blair Trewin has made an unjustified assumption !”
Activist bias. !
Letting rabid activists at the weather data is like letting the fox into the hen-house.
(eg Gavin Schmidt and GISS)
90
Your rabid activist is the norm within the public service and promotions are “rabidity based” to judge by the credentials of the Victorian health officials Sutton and van Diemen.
50
“Blair Trewin has made an unjustified assumption !”
The whole AGW meme is based on scientifically unjustified assumptions. !
70
Why are citizens (and parliamentarians) doing for free the work that the BOM is charged with doing under the Meteorology Act 1955?
50
Why are we being fleeced by crony capitalist wind, solar and electric vehicle, etc., wealth creation schemes based on climate hoax creatively accounted warming blamed on C)(2 emissions?
It’s the economy, stupid, economic vandalism in the name on United Nations based socialism masquerading as environmentalism.
We need competent elected representatives, not career chasers and exploiters.
60
What happened to the former record-holder Cloncurry? The following is from the late John Daly’s “What’s Wrong With The Surface Record”.
“Some critics will dismiss individual station records as merely `anomalous’ (in which case most of the non-urban stations would have to be dismissed on those grounds), but when one station acquires an importance far beyond its own little record, no effort is spared to discredit it. This was the fate of Cloncurry, Queensland, Australia, which holds the honour of having recorded the hottest temperature ever measured in Australia, a continent known for its hot temperatures. The record was 53.1°C set, not in the `warm’ 1990s, but in 1889. It was a clear target for revisionism, for how can a skeptical public be convinced of `global warming’ when Cloncurry holds such a century-old record?
The attack was made by Blair Trewin of the School of Earth Sciences at the University of Melbourne [27], with ample assistance from the whole meteorological establishment. And all this effort and expense was deployed to discredit one temperature reading on one hot day at one outback station 111 years ago. Stations do matter.”

The Bourke record is not just confirmed by Brewarrina but by another thermometer in Bourke. Perhaps there was an overlap between old and new sites. Post office and old telegraph station? Five days each of The two records can be seen on the same page in column 2 here.
There is something curious about the date in the top right corner of the page.

Siliggy = Lance Pidgeon
40
I just had a look at your blog Siliggy; very interesting.
20
Oh. I have ignored that old blog for far too long. Should do something with it.
Been spending to much time on Facebook.
Not the first time Bourke recorded high temperatures like that either. Back when it had a different type of screen or possibly at the old telegraph station that may have produced numbers two degrees warmer, it did just that with 127 degrees in 1877. So not only was this temperature backed up by the other thermometer in Bourke, the one at Brewarrina and high temperatures from towns hundreds of miles around it, it also has form for doing this in the distant past.
https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/252375260
41
I don’t do FB!
30
Not only that.
It says the thermometer used to record 125F has just been tested by an expert from Sydney:
“RECORD HEAT WAVE.
Since out last issue Old Sol has made him-self felt to some tune, putting up a record on Sunday that has not been beaten for 32 years, if it was then. During Christmas week the temperature was comparatively cool for the time of year, but New Year’s eve gave us 117 in the shade ; January 1, 116, January 2, 116, January 3, 125, and January 4, 110, an average of 118 for the five days. These figures were recorded by the thermometer which has done duty for some years, and which only a week or two ago was tested by- an expert from the Department in Sydney, and proved to be absolutely correct. On Sunday last, when 125 decrees in the shade was recorded, a fearfully hot wind, from the north existed all day, and at 9 o’clock that night the glass still showed over 100 degrees. A dust storm then supervened, and lasted throughout Monday, the glass recording 116 degrees. A dry thunderstorm occurred on Monday night, and then a gale from the south came up cooling the atmosphere con-siderably. To-day has been comparatively pleasant.” (emphasis added)
-Western Herald (Bourke, NSW : 1887 – 1970), Sat 2 Jan 1909
80
I have been messing about with thermometers for some time now and find that if there is a stiff breeze blowing , then the type of enclosure doesn’t matter so much . On a still day in the afternoon with clear sky , the sun will cook the enclosure regardless of type unless it is fan forced . So those records that include mention of strong wind should not be ignored .
40
Very good points Another Delcon. Yes at low wind speeds the Stevenson screen design is at its worst and the effects of the long thermal time constant of wood exchanging radiation internally with the thermometer are highest.
So yes the wind they describe gives a very good clue to it being real and serious heat.
40
Looks like a type-setting error to me. The date above the “Our Sydney Letter” heading is ” Wednesday, January 6, 1909″.
Cheers
Dave B
20
The Wednesday 6 Jan and Saturday 9 Jan issues are missing from the archive, so, I don’t know if this issue was backdated and those never published(?)
However, I think we can say:
(1) that the 125F on 3 Jan 1909 is absolutely 100% correct, unassailably so.
(2) BOM’s method of adjusting temperatures by ‘circumstantial evidence’ are the opposite of unassailable.
30
It would be great if someone near a capitol city other than Canberra could go and check their state library copies of that paper. I know Adelaide has it on microfiche because i copied a lot from there when researching the 1896 heatwave and sir Charles Todd’s old haunts.
10
I checked here: https://newspaperarchive.com/browse/au/nsw/bourke/bourke-western-herald/
and the 6 and 9 jan editions are also missing (looks like a different scan to those in trove, too).
10
BoM have also adjusted the average annual mean temps for the past 20 years by at least 0.1C.
2001 and 2011 were both below average years. Not any more.
30
Australia’s temperature record has been so corrupted and in often unknown, undocumented ways such as “homogenisatiom”, that it is effectively useless for any scientific or other purpose.
81
The revision and destruction of historical temperature records by the BoM is a huge insult to those (mostly) volunteers who worked so hard to make Australia’s former temperature records among the longest and most accurate in the world, especially for the Southern Hemisphere. I say former records because after the BoM has adjusted them in undocumented ways they are useless.
61
Observations were made for temperature because it was essential for the reductions to calculate mean sea level pressure at the observatory. This data was important for calculating msl pressure maps for the entire continent. The pressure map was the most important prognostication tool for predicting possible weather two days into the future. We had no satellites back in 1900 but we knew if there was an impending pressure system that could be conducive to form thunderstorms or dry hot winds out of the centre. We forget today because we are mesmerised by the absolute avalanche of date spewing out of the BOM. But, back in the day, it was temperature and pressure twice a day that made it possible to draw those MSLP maps that appeared every morning in our newspapers. In a way, temperature is a function of pressure. Not only for the density of atmosphere parked over our heads but also for the ancestry of the air mass, maritime tropic, or Antarctic. From a high parked over in western NSW dragging hot dry air out of the centre or an east coast low battering us with frigid south easterly blasts full of Tasman Sea moisture.
What Trewin argues is trivia. Temperature is not god!
70
The problem I have with manipulation of factual evidence is that it isn’t being done in the name of accuracy. We know that to be true because nobody can argue with an entry made in handwriting other than from the point of view that the writer may have been wrong but the same holds true of any reading by a person or even a machine, even today. And so BOM (and others in meteorology and climate science) have an agenda about ‘record hot temperatures’ even to the extent of looking at fractions of a degree to prove the planet is getting hotter and hotter year by year.
The fact we are not even now (satellites are better but still not perfect) or ever have been measuring temperatures at high resolution over most of the uninhabited planet is never mentioned in their arguments or assessments. It is just enough for them to back up Mann’s trickery by saying ‘there, another hottest year for you’ just to keep their pronounced inferiority complexes at bay for a little while longer and their jobs and funding secure for another decade.
If anyone was seriously worried about carbon dioxide and fossil fuel we could go with gas, hydro and small and larger scale nuclear generated energy for the next several decades and have completely safe and green electricity without any need for the environmental damage caused by solar panels and wind turbines. We would also then know with greater certainty just how clever the greenhouse gas believers have been or not as the case may be.
90
Thank God there are people still fighting for the truth. You have to ask – What is the motivation for destroying scientific records?
In a criminal case, anyone caught destroying evidence cops a right spanking for good reason.
40
Yet another nail in the coffin of truth. ABC, BOM, public education establishments, etc. all working in earnest to spew out as much propaganda as possible using our tax money. When the crash and burn happens I do hope there will be enough good people with a spine willing to pick up the pieces. Thanks a lot PM Morrison for being one of those so called good people who does nothing to stop the evil spreading like a cancer.
60
Actually I think he is doing a passable job. Very popular. Taking on China in foreign affairs like no other country, Huawei, Wuhan Flu, Hong Kong. And taking the ABC head on. The ABC management understand the removal of their indexation, a step before actual reduction, so they are firing people and keeping the cash while hoping to hurt the government with job losses and blame. Reprehensible conduct in the middle of an employment crisis.
Morrison moves slowly, cuts slowly, impercetibly. And Jobkeeper is doing very well to hold the place together, borrowing like a socialist against our futures, but in a time of real need. It’s hard to fault him. And who before had actually taken on the Universities and ABC and SBS and CSIRO and BOM and the endless energy quangos? I think he will do some good long term while handling the greatest National crisis since WW2. The huge university industry is out of control financially, profiteering from overseas students and in my opinion with thousands of zero value degrees and higher degrees. Degree factories.
And while we have lost only 100+ people to Wuhan Flu, that is remarkable but I would put it down to the Premiers. Morrison still wants to send everyone back to school.
What I do not know is how so many advanced cases Wuhan Flu could appear from nowhere without a previous sign. It means these communities were not distancing at all, quite the reverse.
Personally I blame the Eid on 28th May and an intransigent Premier who turned a blind eye to the problems as with Cedar Meats. Like Cedar meats, they knew about it and said nothing until an observant nurse checked an injured worker from the abattoir a month later. It really needs explanation other than known large donation to the Labor party by the owner of Cedar Meats. That would be criminal. Our public servants and political leaders have to be accountable. That includes Daniel Andrews. And the BOM, busy little homogenizers too busy to look at the real records. Supercomputers do not make it right.
What I find absurd is that our local council just voted themselves a wage rise. Of course they deserve it. Average salary of $110,000 pa., far below the BOM average of $168,000. For what?
How is it that all these public enterprises including the BOM just keep growing and demanding more money even when they have long outlived their usefulness? And keep demanding more cash. Wasting public money is the biggest growth industry in Australia. And then there’s that $444Million gift by the Turnbulls to ‘save’ the Great Barrier Reef. Without any application or idea what was going to be done with the cash, 7 1/2 tons of pure gold for nothing. Typical Green greed.
101
‘Thanks a lot PM Morrison …’
TdeF is correct, the PM is a pair of steady hands in a crisis and the people trust him. Imagine if Turnbull was at the helm, or Albo.
‘When the crash and burn happens …’
In a very real sense its here and now, there will be winners and losers, but economic conditions should return to normal fairly quickly. The big unknown is whether the property market will remain relatively buoyant, a bursting of the bubble would be your crash and burn.
In a cyclic sense Australia could return to the 1890s, when a new nationalism developed through arts and literature. It was also pretty wet.

Wentworth NSW is an interesting one. It only has daily data from 1956 to 1967 but at the bottom, its hottest day was 10th of January 1939, 48.1°C. Nine months have their highest maximum recorded before 1957. It seems to have a complete monthly record from 1907 to 1967 but was opened in 1868.
January 1939 had a mean of 38.5°C, 5.6°C higher than the 60 year mean.
Also in Mildura, January of that year had 38.5°C mean maximum, 5.5°C higher than the mean at the PO (and highest since 1908 When it definitely used a Stevenson Screen). This is 0.7° higher than the recent record at the airport. Although a cooler site, it’s pretty obvious the modern equipment reads higher than the older equipment by at least a degree on hotter days.
30
Imagine my shock.
00
I’ve just done some analysis of NSW temperature data (see here or https://climatescienceinvestigations.blogspot.com/2020/07/18-new-south-wales-temperature-trends.html).
My conclusions so far are these:
1) Temperatures in New South Wales (NSW) today are probably no greater than they were in the 1880s, 1920s and 1940s.
2) The temperature trend I have calculated for NSW was +0.02 ± 0.08 °C per century for the data between 1884 and 2006. So basically there was no warming that I could detect over the last 140 years.
3) Most temperature records (and averages) appear to be fractals which exhibit self-similarity (scaling behaviour) with a fractal dimension of 0.25. This means that you will still get large fluctuations in the average temperature even if you smooth the data. It is just that the period of the fluctuations will increase. Those longer period fluctuations may look like trends, but they are probably not. They are probably still just noise.
4) Consequently, fluctuations in the average temperature per decade of up to 1 °C are still possible, and quite likely, over timescales of several centuries just because of chaotic noise.
5) Most of what climate scientists think is warming is therefore probably just low frequency noise due to chaos theory.
6) The adjustments (homogenization, changepoints and breakpoint adjustments) made to temperature data by climate scientists (often to remove the chaotic noise that they think is measurement error) can add over 0.5 °C per century to the warming trend, and potentially add more than 1 °C.
7) The high noise level in monthly temperature data (with a range of at least ±2 °C and S.D. > 1 °C) means you need at least 150 years of continuous data before you can even begin to see a distinct trend of any type. Unfortunately, in most places around the world that data just isn’t there. NSW has the best data in the Southern Hemisphere and even that isn’t adequate.
70
An MP doing something useful? That is a very disturbing thought.
10
I cannot believe that scientists/meteorologists of the past couldn’t read a thermometer.
I can believe that current climate activists masquerading as scientists can’t tell the truth.
40
Knowing what happened when the PM ((Abbot) tried to initiate some action on the BOM etc, i wonder what Kelly will do with this new information ?
Obviously it will be aired on SKY 2GB etc, but there should be some “official” follow up at a high level to attempt to stop the distortion of data.
There is obviously much expertise and relavent knowledge on this and similar blogs etc which should all be coordinated through a common “Platform” /Media channel, for maximum impact.
We need to raise a “Big Stink” over this, in order for the mass public to notice.
HOW ?
60
We could talk with Susan Ley, the Minister responsible for BoM, but understandably there are more immediate concerns for government. We want and audit, but are prepared to wait for a Royal Commission into climate change.
10
It’s also worth noting newspaper reports that on 14 December 1909, White Cliffs recorded 125F or 51.7C … https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/15078880/1306909
I’ve no idea if it was in a Stevenson screen but an archive of records somewhere might confirm whether or not Bourke should share the claimed record hottest day with White Cliffs.
30
Chris found this report which records another 125F temp although earlier , I’ve been trying to find data on Wanaaring post office measurements because the town is tiny and records should start at 1884 .
https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/63929506
20
Seems to have a typo Jo.
40
Ahh !, well C Kelly managed to air his findings on Sky, Bolt Report tonight.
But i am not convinced he knows how to progress this for a real lasting result and make BOM correct all their records and declare the implications for the science of GW.
I fear it is going to get smothered by Political agenda’s .
00
The reason given for the deletion was, according to Kelly, the measurements were made under
Non standard conditions. If this was valid, how can modern electronic methods of measurement
be seen as a standard equivalence?
That argument would also imply that the world had no reliable means of measuring temperature
before 1910 ie it would seem it was impossible to measure temperature before that year and
what measurements that existed were no better than proxied tree rings. This argument could
Be extended further, as the surrounding conditions of most measurement sites, such as the
addition of huge numbers of people, mechanical conveyances and tarmacs , tall buildings etc
completely render the environments under which the BOM gathers data as incomparable to
the ‘standard’ conditions existing in 1910. Indeed, one could suggest that the environment at those
sites pre 1910 rendered the measurements taken in those early years as much more effectively
‘standardised’ and accurate than anything existing now, and including the means of measurement.
It is plain. The BOM is using such weak argument to form the basis of its political agenda that
the globe is warming in excess of warming after a ‘mini ice-age’, due to increased concentration
of atmospheric [CO2] as resulting only from human activity.
