Coronavirus may leave a trail of benefits in its wake. Who knew that there were so many cheap antivirals around? Will people get fed up with the limited choices on offer next time there is a quarantine.
While newspapers in Australia were pretty keen to share the discovery of an antiviral role for HCQ, not so many were interested in the followup studies.
Ivermectin, like hydroxychloroquine is a kind of superdrug — in the sense of being in worldwide mass use. Some 3.7 billion doses are estimated to have been given since its approval. It has been called the Japanese Wonder Drug. It’s the farm drench, a head lice treatment, and works against worm, mites and ticks too.
It was estimated to reduce viral loads in vitro massively but most people didn’t think it would work at lower safe doses. Then Bangladeshi doctors claim it was “astounding”. Last month US tests suggest that it reduced deaths by 40%. (Rajter)
These are all every priminary results. More studies are promised for Ivermectin. Especially in Peru, where a grassroots movement of Doctors has ensured it will be used.
A US clinical trial of the drug ivermectin found that it reduced the mortality rate of COVID-19 patients by 40%.
This study was published in medRxiv and was led by Dr Jean-Jacques Rajter a physician at Broward Health Medical Center. The study assessed 280 coronavirus patients over the age of 18, with 173 being treated with the drug and 107 having standard care for the virus. The study found that overall mortality in those who took the treatment was 15% compared to those who did not take it, who had a 25% mortality rate. This would equate to a 40% drop overall.
US Trial Finds Drug Cuts Coronavirus Mortality 40%
David A Patten, NewsMax
The findings reported in Medrxiv, “ICON (Ivermectin in COVID-19) Study: Use of Ivermectin Is Associated With Lower Mortality in Hospitalized Patients With COVID-19,” said that patients who took part in the trial were given a single dose of the anti-parasitic medication, and some received a second dose a week later.
The dose given the COVID-19 patients was the same as the FDA-approved dose used to treat patients with intestinal parasites.
Perhaps the study’s most impressive finding: The effect the drug had on 75 sick COVID-19 patients who were suffering from “severe pulmonary disease” – a very high-risk group.
Of patients in that group who did not receive ivermectin, 81% died. Yet the mortality rate for patients with severe pulmonary disease who did receive ivermectin was 39 percent.
A long review of Ivermectin last month said that it had several possible mechanisms, and “several studies reported antiviral effects”:
Several studies reported antiviral effects of ivermectin on RNA viruses such as Zika, dengue, yellow fever, West Nile, Hendra, Newcastle, Venezuelan equine encephalitis, chikungunya, Semliki Forest, Sindbis, Avian influenza A, Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome, Human immunodeficiency virus type 1, and severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus . — Heiary et al (2020)
Which suggests it may have a long future.

If it works, or if too many GP’s (family doctors) prescribe it the Australian Government will probably ban it for C-19 treatment just as they did for HCQ.
But as stated above, it has a better chance of success than HCQ because President Trump’s experts haven’t mentioned it. They don’t need to because their prefered Zelenko cocktail of HCQ, Zn and Azi seems to be effective for EARLY STAGE infection (before the infection moves to the lungs and creates a deadly cytokine storm for which there is a poor chance of recovery with or without antivirals).
Ivermectin is currently being used in Bolivia for C-19 treatment.
This is not to say unbiased clinical trials shouldn’t be conducted (but is that even possible anymore with this disease?). But in the absence of trial data for C-19 use and given the ban on HCQ in Australia and the absence of permitted early stage treatments, under the bioethical doctrine of primum non nocere, it should be used. There is at least evidence for its antiviral and anti C-19 properties.
And C-19 treatment and protocols (lockdowns etc.) is not about saving lives but the far more important objective of proving “orange man bad”.
Plus there seems to be an inate Australian Government bias against off-label use of cheap and possibly effective drugs (which would be harmless even if they didn’t work).
The Government (and useful idiot) attitude is that drugs need to be expensive and have adverse side effects (in some) and be of only marginal effectiveness (Remdesivir) to warrant approval for C-19 because otherwise you must be a Trumpophile.
The Australian Government’s anti-science and anti-scientific inquiry attitude is indicated by 1) the current health minister’s ban on HCQ, 2) his previous refusal to allow an inquiry into data tampering at the BoM and 3) the Government having one of the world’s most fanatical and self-destructive commitments to the belief in anthropogenic global warming.

G’day David,
Yesterday I got an emailed reply to one I sent my local federal member back in May. He’d forwarded my comment about hcq to Greg Hunt, (our Federal Minister for Health), a very welcome surprise. The minister replied, and included the following link:
https://www.wehi.edu.au/news/covid19-prevention-trial-opens-high-risk-healthcare-workers
The “wehi” is the Walter and Eliza Hall institute, which does medical research. The study is to investigate the use of hcq as a prophylaxis (great) for use by health care workers. Will take 4 months (not so great).
Zinc is not included, but is mentioned as only being required if the patient is deficient in it, a position which sounds at least debatable to me.
Overall, it’s an interesting reply from Minister Hunt, but does not address the immediate question of why not use the Zelenko cocktail, now and early as he prescribes.
I’ve not yet drafted a reply.
Cheers
Dave B

Hi Dave,
Good news. I also wrote to Hunt and I specifically asked why doctors aren’t allowed to prescribe HCQ and also stated tthat they should be allowed to follow the Zelenko protocol exactly, i.e. start administering HCQ immediately upon suspicion of infection and before Stage 2 and infection of the lungs and the cytokine storm happens. At the very least, the treatment would be harmless and there is nothing else on offer.
Regards,
David

David, a clinic in Melbourne is running trial with HCQ. It is not banned, just gone underground somewhat because of the Trump backlash. Seems to be going well.
60
Illegal, banned, and cannot be prescribed are indeed different, but a patient who wants, or needs, the item still can not get it.
20
Prevention better than cure.
https://notrickszone.com/2020/07/12/just-use-a-mouthwash-stupid-new-british-study-suggests-oral-rinsing-effective-against-covid-19-spread/
61
I wonder on the basis of those results if alcoholics have a lower rate of C-19 infection?
If you Google alcohol and Covid-19 you just get a bunch of warnings from the control freaks not to use or abuse alcohol during the plague.
63
Unfortunately Listerine and other mouth washes have no alcohol in them any longer. It still tastes like Listerine but there’s none of the punch with it any longer.
[On other matters, try buying a tooth brush that doesn’t feel like its made out of feathers. It’s supposed to BRUSH your teeth (scrub them!), not caress them, I can not stand soft tooth brushes, and I’m betting I’m in the majority … had to share]
94
WXC, I bought Listerine yesterday.
Alcohol is listed as the second ingredient after water.
I suggest that there will be a rush by folks to buy it.
So get in to the supermarkets early.
And by the way it is the action of gargling which kills the virus.
That way the mouthwash gets to the back of the throat and nasal passages where the virus first infects the body
53
WXcycles, most mouthwashes do contain ethanol but Listerine and others all have non-alcohol versions for people who don’t consume or use alcohol for religious reasons.
53
Interesting. Though most of the review is “in vitro”.
As for mouthwash, clinical studies have not systematically examined how effective nasal rinsing is for preventing respiratory infections.
Mouthwashes widely utilized in daily oral and dental hygiene for cosmetic and medical reasons and have demonstrated acceptable tolerability when used multiple times daily for durations of 6 months and longer. Despite this, the impact of rinsing with these agents on throat tissue health needs to be seriously considered, since the viral lipid membrane is effectively the same as that of the host. Some of these agents, such as ethanol and hydrogen peroxide may, if used several times a day over a period of 2–3 months, induce mucosal inflammation.
But for short term use — eg on people living with a known carrier, they might reduce the viral load shed by the carrier, which would be quite useful in reducing spread to close contacts. They won’t do anything to viruses breathed in past the epiglottis or swallowed. But every cheap success is worth pursuing.
61
Yes I hate soft tooth brushes. At least I did when I still had teeth to brush.
30
A hard bristle can damage tooth enamel.
Soft brushing is sufficient to clean out muck from the surface and between teeth.
00
I haven’t seen any data on alcohol as a preventive.
‘Alcohol in the body at the time of exposure to a pathogen tends to impair the body’s immediate immune response to the pathogen, making it easier for an infection to develop.’ NIH
There is data on smokers and its good news for a change, Covid-19 cases are under represented amongst this fraternity.
51
In other words,
Don’t swallow the alcohol ?
43
“There is data on smokers and its good news for a change, Covid-19 cases are under represented amongst this fraternity.”
Let us know if there’s any data on vaping. The FDA / CDC immediately advised citizens to stop smoking and vaping, so it would be delightful to see them exposed as foolish again.
10
Drinking alcohol makes a big difference to how much of a hold infection takes. The only time I’ve had cold or flu symptoms in the past twenty something years has been after drinking alcohol when infected.

Related: Tony Heller’s latest video about the efficacy or otherwise, of lockdowns for C-19.
https://youtu.be/z34ILhFs-xs
73
Sigh.
In nearly every country that does a proper lockdown the exponential growth curve flattens 12 days later. In countries that do that but don’t close borders, the daily new cases tail goes on and on and on. It’s easy to ignore the 12 day lag when making graphs that claim to show that “lockdowns don’t work” but it doesn’t change the need to dig mass graves.
Comparing NY (incompetent then success) with Sweden (half lockdown, 50% live by themselves anyway, and half “success”) is not going to give much insight into anything, except for “how awful it can get in a high density cold city”.
There are so many factors (climate, demographics, Vit D, HCQ, ivermectin, co-morbidities, viral strain) which cause vastly different death rates that it’s possible to make almost any conclusion at all with careful selection of certain whole nations. But some factors are so strong — like lockdowns and masks — that even gross epidemiology sweeping studies show an effect. ie Countries that lockdown, and countries that wear masks are more successful. Some things are obvious.
As for the death of NZ tourism, ponder that the countries that did a lockdown well are now welcome travellers and the countries that managed it incompetently are not. NZ’ers will be welcome anywhere with any country they want to open their border too, but most nations don’t want their people to visit Sweden or the US.
If NZ is like Australia we spend more on foreign travel than foreign travellers spend on us. Just getting Australians to visit Australia will more than fix the deficit.
As for the “danger” of avoiding influenza and coronavirus for a year, when we are not yet sure whether people develop long lasting immunity at all, the harm of skipping the first and likely most deadly strains could be zero, or even a negative number. Hands up who’d rather catch covid next year or the year after when Docs know what they are doing, or there is a vaccine?
86
Jo, it is much worse than that, Mr Heller has gone over to the dark side of only showing the data that suits his argument ala Climate Activists.
He has been banning my posts for at least a month where I pointed out that he is not showing all the other countries that have used lockdown and masks that blow away Sweden’s so called good performance.
I posted a lot of contradictory data, especially Czechia, which he would not show his acolytes who all believe COVID19 is a conspiracy and lockdowns and masks don’t work.
The other point is why does anyone think that Sweden won’t also get more waves when they only have an infection rate of 12.5%, how they think that represents Herd Immunity I don’t know.
10
Well. One hopes that in 9 months, given at least one effective vaccine (or even a suite), Tony’s Dark Side will be rubbished to the past. Here’s hoping, because he’s as important in exposing data temp fraud as anyone else, Jo included.

Eloquent informative presentation. This is the link provided in the clip:
https://c19study.com
I am wondering what has changed in Sweden. It could be a function of keeping it away from vulnerable, population being tremendously cautious, finding and isolating individual cases and more effective treatment but their death rate is down to 1/4th of what it was at the peak.
One of the risks with following the Brazilian method in more developed countries is the risk of litigation. Most doctors and their employers are so scared of litigation that they only follow prescribed protocols. Typically they have to come from a recognised authority following double blind trials.
50
Onr of the the things that changed in Sweden is that they retrospectively changed the number of Deaths that they had already declared on worldometers.
The original numbers are still available on worldindata here
https://ourworldindata.org/coronavirus/country/sweden?country=~SWE
00
Reported in the Oz today that NSW will not lockdown its economy even as C-19 cases rise. Perhaps the NSW leaders are just beginning to understand the awful damage lockdowns cause and that they don’t eliminate the virus. Perhaps some understanding is finally creeping into their consciousness. Meanwhile, no such luck that any such understanding will creep into Premier Andrews brain in Victoria, assuming he has one – also reported he said he may be forced to move to tougher restrictions. He remains the most turgidly stupid and malevolent state leader in the country, blindly thrashing out in the only way he seems to be capable of.
192
Not even Do Pi Dan’s Chi-comm controllers in China think anything but lockdown of isolated areas plus sensible measures are a good idea.
They wouldn’t dream of destroying their whole economy as Victoriastan and Australia have done or are doing.
But think of all the cheap Australian assets the Chi-comms will be able to purchase or repossess once the economy is fully destroyed.
146
Wuhan never got lockeddown?

And the ‘experts’ get trotted out to suggest we should aim for elimination:
https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-07-14/calls-for-coronavirus-elimination-strategy-replace-suppression/12452660
This is why you never. ever, ever put experts in charge of an economy. Invariably they have one dimensional views of the world that orient around their particular field of ‘expertise.’
Though I do see the CCP virus has lost its lustre at the ABC, as they are back on the refugees are wonderful, and why we should ban everything associated with whiteness stories again.
71
It won’t be tested in Australia (because HCQ and “orange man bad”) but there is a hypothesis that HCQ and ivermectin may work in a complementary and synergistic manner against C-19.
It’s worth testing in a country more open to scientific inquiry and common sense than Australia is.

Third waves hits HK.
‘Barely two weeks since people began returning to Hong Kong’s gyms and cinemas, and venturing out for dim sum in larger groups as social-distancing regulations were eased after the apparently successful containment of Covid-19, the coronavirus has returned with a vengeance.
‘Experts describe this third wave of infections as the most severe yet and have called for immediate suppression measures as well as extensive testing to control the outbreak.’
SCMP
60
In the absence of any effective treatment that is allowed to be used, sooner or later enough people have to get infected until herd immunity is established.
Either pay now, or pay later when never-infected people are released from lockdown. The virus needs to run its course.
Some question whether HCQ antibodies last long enough to establish herd immunity but the fact that infections have dramatically dropped in Sweden where there were no lockdowns imply herd immunity was established (at least for long enough to extinguish the virus). See Tony Heller’s latest video I referenced above.
Those who wish to destroy our economies refuse to let HCQ to be properly tested or used (and likely ivermectin as well) and are hanging out for a vaccine as wanted by Emperor Gates and which may or may not be possible or effective or almost useless drugs like Remdesivir.
123
Mr Heller is not telling the whole truth is he, no mention of all the countries that did far better than Sweden, which only has the population of New York or London. He is acting like a Climate Activist only showing the data that supports his arguments.
If you really think that herd immunity can be gained with 12.5% of the population you know a lot more than the virolgists do.
10
ps Sweden are 7th worst in the world for Deaths/Million, what about the 190 countries better than them?
Sweden have also changed their data to make it look better, compare worldoemeters with worldindata, worldindate still shows the data that used to be on worldometers.
Like the 17th of June which used to show 102 detahs for that day, now shows just 32, or 22nd use to show 69 and now shows just 19.
I know beacuse I was keeping a record of the UKs and Swedens daily cases & deaths.

In this multi-hospital assessment, when controlling for COVID-19 risk factors, treatment with hydroxychloroquine alone and in combination with azithromycin was associated with reduction in COVID-19 associated mortality. Prospective trials are needed to examine this impact.”

Ivermectin is extensively used in humans, not just animals.
72
In the absence of any treatment that is both approved plus known to be effective (e.g. Remdesivir is approved but not known to work effectively, if at all) what can possibly go wrong with using either the Zelenko “cocktail” of HCQ, Zinc and Azi *immediately* upon suspicion of *early stage* infection or ivermectin? Both drugs are harmless, cheap and available right now in proper countries (except HCQ banned in Australia for C-19). Even if they don’t work there is nothing else that can possibly stop early stages of the infection. There is nothing to lose.
Incidentally Remdesivir in Australia will cost about $4000 per dose but supposedly the drug company donated some doses.
Plus the above trial mentioned by Rosco showed effectiveness of HCQ but again failed to use zinc supplementation as required by the Zekenko protocol because susceptible people seem to be zinc deficient and zinc is vital for HCQ to work.
132
That was meant to be a response to Rosco at #10.
12
I wonder if politics are involved in not using CHQ because Clive Palmer purchased tens of thousands of dollars of HCQ and gave it to the national stockpile. It is heart felt and should have a positive impact on the most CV19 impacted group in Victoria. At 2:35, there is a specific request.
The qualification is to provide the necessary wriggle room to accommodate the higher power.

I have zero confidence in the Australian Government’s ability to medically manage C-19.
Don’t forget, as with their climate advisers, their medical advisers only get into high positions by giving the answers their employers (the politicians) want to hear. Just as the climate advisers haven’t been in a lab for the last 30 years, neither have the medical advisors been in a lab or seen a patient for about the same time.
123
Yes. Victoria has led the downhill charge but NSW is poised to overtake it and then we’ll descend into what could be decades of chaos post the inevitable collapse; I’d hoped to be dead before this living nightmare arrived.

Can you hook that up to make renewable energy?
01
There was a story on the morning radio (3AW) that a junior official sent emails to higher authorities 24 hours after the initial hotel quarantines in Melbourne began warning of serious problems with the scheme as it was. That was back in March. Nothing done to correct this. A Sir Humphrey Appleby clone probably assured the relevant minister that everything was under control. Bureaucracy at its finest. And, , , they still don’t share personally in the financial havoc they create.

The “mectins” group of anthelmintics (animal drenches eg sheep and cattle )are also called the macrocyclic lactone groupB. The 3 main actives sold into the Australian livestock market are Ivermectin, abamectin and moxidectin. Human worm control in Australia is based around pyrantel and mebendazole. Mebendazole is part of the benzimidazole group (or BZ’s) which were revolutionary when introduced in the late 1950’s / 1960’s into Australia. Companion animals (eg cats and dogs) also use pyrantel and mebendazole mostly but Ivermectin is registered in Australia for heartworm ( + other worms) control in dogs. The mectins would now all be off patent so there is no interest for any company to develop this group any further. Same situation as HCQ. So there’s a huge hurdle to overcome to ever get the mectins registered for human use in Australia. Never going to happen unless there is huge political influence and subsidised by non commercial interests. Even once that happened there would need to be substantial toxicology studies either performed here or contributed from overseas studies (RCT’s). Thats years of work.
60
Ivermectin is approved for human use in Australia but not for C-19 which would be an off label use and would probably get banned.
https://www.healthdirect.gov.au/medicines/brand/amt,3069011000036101/stromectol
32
Thanks David, good to know – very limited doctor prescribed use after diagnostic confirmation (scabies etc). Certainly not “over the counter”. Which means its toxicology package should be relatively good. However, if it were upscaled to more broader use there might still be some regulatory hurdles. Perhaps a glimmer of hope there.
50
Given it’s availability via farm stores
Who needs to get it approved by the TGA in Australia for humans ?

It’s hard not to get a few splashes bouncing back when using the pour on cattle version.would have had thousands of hits since it became available. If a dog accidentally gets a massive overdose they suffer temporary blindness.

Ivermectin is not used on Collie (Lassie) type dogs in the UK as there have been cases where its use owas fatal.
However it was very effective on my Labrador when she caught fox mange.
I believe there are now mectins that are safer for dogs.

One problem that niggles me a bit where countries keep Corvid 19 out of their territory is when the rest of the world come to visit.
In the 1960s there was a vogue in pig farming for minimal disease pigs which were delivered by caesarian section and reared away from other pigs to found a minimal disease herd.
The pigs did grow faster on less feed, but the problem came if in spite of strict biosecurity they had a whiff of disease they ended up with a lot of dead pigs owing to their lack of disease resistance.
Would countries with no resistance to C19 suffer from a similar problem, in the absence of an effective vaccine?

And everyone’s favourite fake news outlet the ABC still even today stating in their propagandised muck that masquerades as journalism, that HCQ was shown to be ineffective (quoting the discredited and withdrawn Lancet anti-science) and that there is no known link between the Melbourne (Non) Black Lives (Don’t) Matter Neo-Marxist uprisings despite it being officially recognised that there is.
30
French study shows without HCQ, Swiss Case Fatality Rate more than doubles in June, then falls back to under 5% when use resumes
Amazing graphical proof that HCQ use save many, many lives, because when the Lancet study claiming death threat from HQC use caused the Swiss to cease using this cheap medication, CFR jumps to over 12% for two weeks. Yet when the use returns (and the Lancet retraction occurs), Swiss CFR drops stunningly again.
And during that period is the only period when Swiss CFR reaches French CFR, where HCQ is not used.
