Sorry that this is very short notice! This is today at 2pm EST, Australia. All Welcome.

Howard Brady

Howard Brady in Antarctica c 1970s

Dr Howard Brady is a geologist who has done four expeditions to Antarctica. He won the Distinguished Scientist Alumnus of the Year Award for his contributions to Antarctic research. He has been published in journals like Nature and Science.  He was to do a seminar at ANU today, but it has been cancelled. This upset people in the department at ANU, who may have thought they could write freely. So now its going ahead as a Zoom ANU meeting:

2 pm Tuesday 6 October 2020

Venue: Online via Zoom (link)

All welcome; no registration necessary.

Dr Brady writes:

ATTACK ON ACADEMIC FREEDOM

Professor Ross McCleod was ordered at the Australian National University (ANU) by higher authority – Professor Paul Burke – to withdraw my ACDE (Arnt-Corden) seminar for the Crawford School of Public Policy next Tuesday at 2pm as an official event.

This upset many in that Department as an attack on academic freedom..it seems that some in the faculty are receiving funds with regard to carbon emissions and climate change etc. (including Professor Burke)!! The excuse was that the paper was not on economics!!  Farcical considering the billions of dollars being spent on climate change.

Despite this it was decided to go ahead with my lecture anyway as a private ANU zoom meeting under Professor Ross McCleod.

The actual paper is attached and I invite you to read it beforehand. I reduced the size of the file to under I megabyte, so it should be easy to upload. The paper is a detailed academic paper that was reviewed before submission.  The physics section was aided by world famous Professor Will Happer of Princeton who was on the Security Council of the USA last year and climate advisor to POTUS.

Any of you are welcome to join on the day with any other interested parties AND to log into the zoom event by simply clicking on the INVITE (it was always on Zoom due to ANU Covid protocols at the moment). You can log in at 2pm next Tuesday as below.

Professor McCleod and others at the ANU who backed me and even sent emails of encouragement should be thanked for their courage and academic independence in the face of the pressures that are everywhere in the University environment  at the moment.

The more people that join in — the better. Censorship doesn’t seem so appealing if more people see a message after the axe falls.

Informal Seminar by Howard Brady: Problems in climate science from the viewpoint of an historical geologist

The climate system is vast, with the interaction of forces we do not fully understand. Linking recent and future global warming to increasing carbon dioxide levels is problematic. Historical data exposes serious flaws in the IPCC reports with respect to: the predictions of future sea levels; the relationship between carbon dioxide levels and temperature; the frequency and severity of storms.  Applying the word “unprecedented”™ to certain events shows an ignorance of the Earth’s geological and environmental history.

Climate change cannot be assumed to be geocentric, without influence from cosmic and solar weather.  Climate models are on steroids with respect to their estimate of what is called the Equilibrium Climate Sensitivity Index: that is, the estimate of future temperatures if carbon dioxide levels double. We cannot forget this statement: ‘we are dealing with a coupled chaotic nonlinear system and therefore the prediction of future climate states is not possible…’ (IPCC Report 2001, 14.2.2.2).

About the speaker:

Dr Howard Brady, a former Catholic priest, was involved in Antarctic research 1974-1982. He was a US Navy chaplain to McMurdo and South Pole Stations and also a drill-site micro-palaeontologist for drill holes in Victoria Land and on the Ross Ice Shelf over four expeditions. He has been a guest at the Lamont Doherty Institute New York; Scripps Oceanographic Institute San Diego; the German Marine Institute Kiel; Oregon State for a drilling expedition in the north-east Pacific Ocean. Howard worked in the oil industry 1988-2005 and re-joined academia as an Honorary Associate in the School of Biological Sciences, Macquarie University 2005-2011. He has researched climate problems since 2005. His position at Macquarie University was not renewed in 2012 due to his criticism of CSIRO sea level projections.

In 2011 Howard was awarded the Alumnus Scientist of the Year Award by Northern Illinois University for his contributions to Antarctic Research. Howard is respected at an international level and is currently an accredited reviewer for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) for its forthcoming report due in 2021.

Howard’s book, Mirrors and Mazes: a guide through the climate debate, was published in 2016 with a second edition in 2018. He is a member of the Australian Academy of Forensic Sciences and an Emeritus Member of the Explorers Club of New York. He has Diplomas in Philosophy and Theology, and postgraduate degrees in Antarctic science: M.Sc. Northern Illinois University,Ph.D. Macquarie University,

Should you err in being an individual and not follow the herd, then you get censored and cut off and ignored.
No matter how accurate the research or data is.
You must follow what the government dictates.

Today I was reviewing that we have hundreds of thousands of laws and restrictions that you could quite easily break and some are still changing.
Remember…Ignorance of the law is no excuse and yet politicians are exempt and give exemptions.
Really makes you wonder what we created.

Literally no one on earth understands Australian Tax Law. Ignorance is inevitable and the law is easily broken. Ignorance is a good excuse and, from my experience, you can fail repeatedly and there might be a warning but it has to be quite severe and blatant to attract a penalty.

“Today I was reviewing that we have hundreds of thousands of laws and restrictions that you could quite easily break and some are still changing.”

This reminds me of a passage from Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand:

“Did you really think we want those laws to be observed?” asked Dr. Ferris, “We want them broken.” … “We’re after power and we mean it.” … “There’s no way to rule innocent men. The only power any government has is to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren’t enough criminals, one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws.” … “But just pass the kind of laws that can neither be observed nor enforced nor objectively interpreted — and you create a nation of lawbreakers — and then you cash in on the guilt.”

From the perspective of a government sanctioning individuals, a country with too many laws is indistinguishable from a country with no laws. With too many laws, any human activity is guaranteed to violate one or more laws which means the government can decide who to sanction. The government of a country with no laws can arbitrarily decide who to punish. Sounds like six-of-one, half-dozen of the other.

As an aside, is it any wonder that the citizens of a country with too many laws tend to treat the laws as a joke?

Dr. Brady has been hoodwinked by the Australian propensity for mis-pronouncing the word ‘Tuvalu’ as ‘Tuvulu’ and thus spelling it as such. I used to hear it all the time on your ABC.

It’s a distraction, and so it’s proved (to me) reading Dr. Brady’s otherwise very interesting paper.

    It’s Tu-vah-lu, Aussies, not Tu-vu-loo!

I love zealots banning stuff because it only encourages more people ignore them.

They just don’t seem to understand the most basic human reaction is… your not the boss of me.

True but they can only be ignored up to a certain point before the social and political environment becomes so draconian and harmful that the people have no option but not to ignore them and instead to step up and do something to show they are not “the boss of me”. The alternative is become slaves. At the moment we are still heading down the road of slavery. Only time will tell how far down that road we go before we turn back.

Brady’s paper was a persuasive read, but the climate debate is over. Predicated on CO2 being the driver of catastrophic climate change, climate associated businesses are worth tens of trillions of dollars at the moment, and even more in the future. Solar, wind, nuclear power, EVs with all the necessary infrastructure, are going to dominate this century, as is carbon trading. It’s clear that the climate juggernaut cannot, and will not, be stopped. All that remains is to bring the “little people” on side using relentless propaganda and scare stories.

That’s the plan, but reality is going to intrude sooner or later. The more intermittent, direct current, weather permitting, non dispatchable “green” energy is added to the grid, our electricity prices will have to triple or quadruple. At some point polluticians (pollution + politics) will no longer be able to lie about the costs and inefficiency of wind and solar. Until then all we can do is laugh/cry (both are renewable zero carbon and gluten free)at the unfolding comedy/tragedy, and research diesel generators.

#6. Then there’s Trump! 4 more years and I suspect the world will look very, very different.

The Climate madness brings the biggest harm to his supporting people and families. They simply need the truth. All they have for that is Trump’s tweets, their experience under his guided governance and Fox News.

A Trump win and the real fight will begin against the electronic social media moguls and the globalists behind the non-scientific science of the AGW and those costing Americans their jobs. The cost of these self interested people to the nation is born out in reductions to the national and personal wealth. Without those returns, the USA becomes increasingly impotent to provide for its people, and the West, in all fields.

The optics of a Biden win and a Harris replacement create nightmares for everyone in the Democracies.

A lot of our current woes in many technical issues revolve around the loss of the term “Act of God”, used in the past to cover unexplained or unexpected outcomes. The same can be said of the term “accident”. Today, some poor human is to blame for any conceivable undesirable outcome, forseen or unforseen, and the lawyers will make sure of that.
    :
As Dr Brady points out in the SMEC Culburra Beach study, the engineers used the Bruun Rule instead of actual observations in their determinations. From a legal standpoint, they had no choice but to use current standard engineering practice or risk malpractice accusations.
    :
“Climate Scientists” have no such restrictions – there is no professional body overseeing standards. Just as some US States are trying to sue fossil fuel companies for “unprecedented” weather events, it should be OK for the silent majority to sue those over-hyping climate catastrophes and wasting $billions if their projections are incorrect.
    :
The question “can you guarantee that …” should be erased from our languages – there are no guarantees in geology, climate, nature or life in general.

#7.1 Precisely. Even the IPPC, I noticed last report, has added disclaimers to its reports. There also appeared to be a lot more ‘ifs and buts’. The problem is, what does it take for our politicians to acknowledge they have been sold an extremely expensive pup. If they only use advisors or employ true believers as their sources of wisdom, how does that ever help the nation. It is apparent our cabinets don’t even listen to rational argument from their own colleagues, and they join the msm in debasing such people for speaking out. Like COVID-19, they use fear to control the community, and look how far Andrews has got with that: Victorians think he’s wonderful as they give him all powerful emergency powers over themselves and find themselves locked down for months on end as he destroys their economy and futures of the kids. Will they still think so when he has destroyed most small businesses that employ most of them.

How slow are our politicians to grow wary of their own excesses on climate and national energy destruction? When the IPPC itself starts throwing in disclaimers, one might think any sane adult that uses its proclammations like the Bible, would wake up enough to reconsider the extreme views they have forced down our throats. Another capitulation to globalists without any alternative review of the arguments. Are the politicians now so trapped in their stupidity over 40years that they are more fearful of the public’s rightful condemnation and derision for what they have done, than they are of reversing much of those 40years of crazed decisions?

“I hope he manages to confine himself to one thing…”

Actually he did, but like the Hydra, every time you lop off one of CAGW’s heads it grows two more, so you are, of necessity, forced to cover a lot of ground when you try to address CAGW’s ever expanding list of often contradictory things caused by CAGW.

Australia’s Universities have this odd way of acknowledging when a climate scientist has reached the pinnacle of his/her global climate authority:

they are Excoriated, Pilloried, Illtreated and even Crucified by their University.

    There was:
    Bob Carter
    Murry Salby
    Peter Ridd
and now ANU is starting on Howard Brady.

It’s a pattern. Any Australian academic who is not an administrator (ptui) should, for their own safety, emigrate to better external pastures. Don’t worry about the Australian institution, it will survive by hook or by crook. But begone as soon as the E.P.I.C play begins. Don’t give them a chance. They’re third rate minds and don’t deserve any consideration.

The zoom conference worked well. Would have been smarter to use my computer with camera and microphone as there was an opportunity to comment that I missed.

It boggles the mind that science has been so corrupted by CO2.

There were 80 participants and it would be fair to say the vast majority were old men.

Mostly old because they were people with wide experience and integrity, and who were not afraid of being cancelled or losing their jobs owing to being retired.
This situation reminds me of religious preachers such as John Wesley in the 18th century who was banned from preaching in parish churches, so he had to preach in the open air.

“Mostly old … ” yes I came back here to make that observation. We are not afraid of being cancelled. I’m not sure how I would fend off a physical attack, but I am getting in some practice with a sjambok, although my 3 sons are not far away and would know what to do.
I like Brady’s seminar paper. It packs in a lot of stuff, but reminds me of the work of my former colleague Bob Carter. Able to explain some “hard” science to “the rest of us”.

Strop, the younger generations know that the science is settled hence no further knowledge is to be gleaned from settled deniers. The government and the media and uni top brass and VIPs (Vested Interest Persons) would not say that science is settled if it were not settled, now would they?

Your poor cheek, suffering so from pressure of the tongue ! The claim that “the science is settled” refers to a situation ( the future ) for which no observation, measurement, nor data collection is possible.ergo: What we have is not science – but rather sophistry.

          Favourite bit:

A downward trend of the two secular total solar irradiance (TSI) observed from the middle 1990s will be first noticeable on the Mars. Since there is no ocean on the Mars, its thermal inertia is significantly lower. Hence, the cooling on Mars will start earlier than on the Earth. That is why confirmation of a future cooling of the Earth can be obtained beforehand on the Mars. Cessation of the temperature rise on the Mars surface will be a portent of global cooling on the Earth. The global upward trend of temperature caused by significant and prolonged rise of TSI in the 20th century took place on the Mars simultaneously with that on the Earth.
