The Reef is fine, the Forests are overgrown, and the River will keep flowing. Science, though is a disaster. What can we do?
Help figure out how to get science working again for the people and the environment, instead of the crisis industry and bureaucrats.
Join us at the AEF Webinar | Tuesday Nov 24, 2020 | 07:30 PM East Coast DST time
Science has been turned in to a fundraising activity rather than a quest for the truth. Instead of helping the Reef, the Forests and the River, scientists use them as perpetual cash cows. They don’t have incentives to solve problems, only to highlight them. No one is paid to find that Nature is doing OK or that Solar cycles drive the climate. So billions of dollars may be thrown away on fashionable but irrelevant quests — money which could be put to much better use.
We’ll discuss how Australia’s three big environmental issues are stuck in scientific ruts and discuss what can be done to get science back on track. Would some kind of official watchdog help, or will any formal unit be captured by the some process that strangled peer review and scientific associations? Can incentives be changed to align scientists with a quest for truth and better predictions?
Peter Ridd will talk about the spectacular health and resilience of the Great Barrier Reef. It’s one of the most pristine ecosystems on earth yet scientists have persuaded everyone that climate change and pollution from farms has almost killed it. Corals appear to be growing faster than they were one hundred years ago. Bleaching has always happened, and corals always grow back.
Jo Nova will explain how our pyroclastic wildfires are made worse by Green land management practices, and these preventable disasters are then used as fearful marketing ploy to promote carbon reduction. The Black Summer Fires have almost nothing to do with climate change, and everything to do with megatons of fuel left untended and droughts which have always come and gone.
It took a half century to turn Australia’s largest river system from an arid zone to one that makes 40% of Australia’s entire farm output. About one third to half of all the water was going into irrigation, but as the inevitable cycle of droughts returned, people panicked about salinity and wildlife and worried about the health of the Fake Lake that had sprung up at the end of the Murray River. So the Government spent nearly $7 billion dollars to buy back a quarter of the irrigators water.

QA is probably a hopelessly vague concept when it comes to science. Here is one aspect that is a bit more precise — bias induced by funding. Pat Michaels and I did a catalog of 15 different types of funding induced bias, plus the potential for them to cascade. It is nicely summarized and discussed here:
https://judithcurry.com/2015/05/06/is-federal-funding-biasing-climate-research/
By the way, when I submitted a shortened version (without the climate change examples) to a journal as an opinion piece the reviewers rejected it without even addressing the findings.
150
Does it matter if funding is biased? It only matters if it is buying a certain result. If there is proper QA the buying of that result should not be possible and the QA will ultimately stifle that funding bias by not allowing studies to arrive at predetermined conclusions. Or QA will ultimately justify the bias if an issue is an issue and of imporetance.
10
All “funding” is biased.
When from a corporation or company it serves the interests, not of shareholders but, of executive management. In the past it was legit to think that money from foundations would be bias free. Now, this money is even more tainted than private money by serving the prejudices of foundation managers in irrational virtue signalling.
The point from David Wojick is becoming more important as governments take more control and direct more resources, governments may claim to make decisions on science and data. Hmm.
00
Which is why proper QA is important.

Annual rainfall, Murray Darling Basin (1900-2019) from the BoM.
Annual rainfall Australia.
Seems BoM haven’t found a way to adjust rainfall gauges as they have with temperatures.
100
Ummmm ?
Ken Stewart has shown that many of the BOM’s temperatures weather stations are inaccurate due to the simple fact that they do not meet the BOM’s own siting guidelines.
I suspect that there are problems with the BOM’s rain gauges across Australia as well.
NB : There are about 3 times as many BOM rain gauges as temperature stations
So the task of examining them is far far bigger.
PS : Is Jennifer Marohassy speaking at the webinar about the Murray Darling and the naturally estuarine lakes where the river meets the Southern Ocean in South Australia ?
Jennifer has published some excellent research on this.
50
“NB : There are about 3 times as many BOM rain gauges as temperature stations” – As rainfall varies widely, it’s handy to have lots of rain gauges so one can pick the lowest reading ones and make it look like your sample size was adequate.
00
I live in the dandenong ranges about 700 meters from the weather station. On several occasions it has rained heavily all day yet the weather station reports 0 rainfall. When I have queried that to the BOM, the response has been that the rainfall gauge is malfunctioning and they will send someone out to fix it. Yet nothing is ever done to correct the record or even flag the reading as unreliable, the 0 reading remains as an official entry in the record. This is not a trivial error, in some years it has amounted to 10% of the total annual rainfall. The error is always to under report not over report.
If the same thing happens at other sites, and I can find no reason why the Ferny Creek site should be special in that regard, it means the entire data record is unreliable and biased.

‘The Black Summer Fires have almost nothing to do with climate change …’
Glad you said that, apart from the build up of fuel loads after a very long drought, there was the large blocking high off the Queensland coast was a major factor. Its fair to say that it was not a global warming signal, but the inquiry said nothing on this.
60
‘ … blocking events were behind the record hot, dry weather that saw devastating bushfires during Australia’s 2019-20 summer … ‘ CarbonBrief
Blocking is a global cooling signal.

One of the problems with science today is its heavy reliance on government funding. It’s basically impossible to get research grants unless you follow the official government viewpoint on climate or anything else. The facts are irrelevant and government and the bureaucracy is stacked with Leftist ideologues.
Also, here is a brief US article on the subject.
https://accountablescience.com/issues/funding-in-science/government-funded-science/
120
Government funded science is always going to eventually turn into government funded support of politics under the guise of science. Governments always seek legitimacy. Funding science (which then becomes non-science)is a way for their power over people to be legitimised. Back when there was no science those in power allied themselves to religion and god to gain legitimacy. I don’t see a way out of this other than to get rid of science from the clutches of the government and let science be paid for by whoever wants to personally fund it. That will mean there will not be much science done as we know it, but science as funded by governments is not science anyway, so less evil in the world. The correct application of the principles of science has led to much good in the world. The politicization of science (until it is not science)is leading to much evil. I am scared for the future because of the evil abroad in the world, and using science as the tool for oppression. In the past many great scientific discoveries were made without government funding. Government funded science community supresses and puts down non government funded science as not proper. Also the idea that science can be done without governments is generally cried down.
100
Kealey has been writing against government funding of research for a long time:
https://www.cato-unbound.org/2013/08/05/terence-kealey/case-against-public-science
I will try to let him know about this event, and many others too. As he points out, the prevailing myth is that government funding of basic research is needed for economic growth.
40
This is great. Preaching to the converted does not help. How do you attract sheep? The MSM won’t help. Perhaps some presenters who are starting to think may discuss.Joel Fitzgibbon might get some colleagues to watch!
40
Yeah but you don’t know the horse is dead until you flog it and flog it and flog it some more.
21
Yes … yes … but what do you make of this comment?
‘Bleaching has always happened, and corals always grow back.’
00
What the hell are you on El loco, or is it off.
11
Had a young lady working for me. Naturally black hair but bleached blond, had been that way since I had known her.
She did this stupid thing in front of me, then looked at me and said “just had a blond moment”
I replied “Stupid does not come out of a bottle)
But her name wasn’t Coral?
30
The only thing I know about Corals is they scratch my anchor.
01
I know that if I knew as much as you know, I would still know fvck all.
01
Please choose from the selection above.
Choose carefully, as your comment will not be refunded.
01
As I was saying, coral bleaching is primarily caused by radiation and not warm seawater.
10
You were saying squat, you copied and pasted a Ridd comment.
You can’t even follow instructions.
Now the poll vote numbers indicated the first two separated by one vote, these will be run through my Dominion vote generation (I meant counting) machine…………….Biden has won in a land slide by 10,000 votes.
Number 2 is a master piece, it covers your whole arm flinging statement, I thought that would go at least straight to the pool room if not a museum of great works of literature. If you would of correctly picked Biden you would of won a NEW CAR.
I can offer you the consolation prize….a NEW BRAIN and today only it has 50% off, it comes vacuum sealed so it will fit right in, if you choose this prize, I can guarantee a 50% improvement on your current model .
With number 2, obviously she would of recovered from the mass bleaching event when separated from the bottle for a period of time, got nothing to do with the sun.
Think you need to be separated from the bottle as well.
11
The bleaching only happens during strong El Nino, when sea level in the Western Pacific falls, and exposing the corals to radiation.

If a cigarette company funds research, how legit is that?
If you don’t allow government funding who will?
More to the point, if you don’t like the results, you can try to press an alternative explanation, yet the AEF have been unable, particularly in the last decade, been able to have any impact on the science, and are regarded as a peddler of discredited pseudoscience. So by any reckoning AEF are failing in their primary goal.
What will the webinar cover, basically the same old assertions, the same quibbling over decimal points, all based on a fundamental sense of victimhood
08
How do you think science was funded before it came to be seen as a government responsibility? All great scientists and scientific discoveries were funded as acts of private philanthropy or by individual scientists themselves.
Universities were also funded by both fees and philanthropists. And resources weren’t wasted on such BS as “gender studies” and “climate change”. Among the sciences, only real, scientifically objective research was conducted with full compliance with the scientific method.
90
“Quibbling over decimal points” , yeah that’s what it’s all about isn’t it that massive 0.000? That seems to be going to fry a the planet .
100
A fine hypothesis, Small.
Will you test your hypothesis by watching the actual webinar and perhaps bringing some like-minded colleagues along to ask some tough questions?
80
Actually AEF and other skeptics have had a major impact on science outside of the government funded academic realm. Your mistake is to think that rich cloistered realm is all there is to science. But of course that is precisely the myth they peddle, isn’t it?
The realm of skeptical climate science is robust and making great progress, certainly more than the heavily government funded academic realm, with its ever hotter models, that exists solely to support foolishly draconian policies.
60
Small Footprint – Science was invented as a way of looking at the world, – without government funding. The results of “Science” to be real science, are ALWAYS up for examination. Dont like the way a species is classified? Then use the name of the classification of that species you do agree with (for example L. after a name means “as described by Linnaeus” R.Br. is Robert Brown). Scientific articles include a Summary, Aim, Methods, Results and Conclusion, and should also include who funded the research. Dont like an article? Then don’t believe it. With funding by government the media takes it that what ever comes out of government research is gods own truth and one is not even supposed to read the paper, just accept the MSMs interpretation of what the Abstract said as “The Science”. If you read an article conducted and funded by a cigarette company YOU can check how legitimate that article is by READING the Aim Methods Results and Conclusion. I have had to READ articles during covid to see wether the science was science or not, and if so how good. Very quickly I could see some of the so called “research” they did with Chloroquine was actually publicly funded murder. It took me 2 min to look up the normal dose of chloroquine, and work out that the dose they gave those critically ill covid patients to “prove” chloroquine is harmfull were probably close to lethal for a healthy adult. I was supposed to believe from the media that was shouted around the world that a drug that had been safe for 50 years was magically unsafe for everyone. Because it came out in the Lancet or where ever it came out does NOT make it science. Concentrating so called “science” in government funded institutions will eventually mean it becomes political activity with the government legitimizing its own ends and science legitimising itself by reference to the government.
130
Among the “interest groups” mentioned you can include the biggest interest group of all, a fundamentally anti-science and morally corrupt government with an agenda.
https://www.theepochtimes.com/does-funding-influence-the-results-of-science_2199994.html
Does Funding Influence the Results of Science?
Policy decisions rely on research, but sometimes that research relies on funding from companies and interest groups

We don’t need government to fund scientific research.

See link for rest, 39 references provided.

That is a much more recent Kealey article, not Leakey. He is the leading analyst for this issue. Also a fine gentleman.
30
David, thanks for pointing out my accidental transposition.
30
Apart from the Left being at war against truth, reason and common decency they are at war against science as well.
51
The interesting question here is why so many smart people are falling for “unscience” (TM). I suspect facebook , google and social media are the main culprits as they promote the subtle lies underpinning bogus science now. The universities have also embraced that view as well. The cognitive dissonance must be almost painfull….
60
Most people are not as “smart” as you ( or they) make out to be… especially outside their normal field of experience
People get appointed into influential positions, and promoted up the chain for many reasons….often not on their ability or “smarts”
The most obvious missing skill set in public officials and high profile “spokesmen” ( and women) ,..is common sense and ability to think logically
00
So the focus of the Webinar is QA and Audits.
QA is covered in both the peer review and the subsequent journal publication (if the research is deemed to be good enough)
Audits are to serve what purpose? There are numerous ways in which Audits and QA are done, mostly be replication of the results using the same method.
This system has worked, and continues to work.
So what the webinar is really about is shutting down science which does not agree with your preconceptions.
I can see your blackshirted QA teams, along with the Brownshirted Auditors, invading laboratories and research centres and saying your experiments are to leftist for our liking, and we will shut you down.

moderated, and this site whines about censorship
[Auto filter removed your comment , you can either whine about it or email Jo about a missing post but you know that already!]AD
33
I’ve whined about the moderation here plenty of times. There’s a brand of cheese (rhymes with “soon”) that will set of the filter even if it makes up part of a longer word
30
Autofilter is not censorship? tagging posts for potential deletion is not censorship? twofaced
16
No, it’s a “wokeness” filter to prevent the site being blacklisted and the owner sued.
You can get around it with character substitution and misspelling eg c00n, frawd, p00fter, qweer
It is hard to figure what triggers the filter at times, though, and the mods seem disinclined to help
30
“No, it’s a “wokeness” filter” keepin that.
But I think this comment cancels the previous comment on the cheese thingy.
00
You haven’t lived yet, Small Footprint. It’s a case of Mind over Matter: the moderation scripts sure don’t mind, and everybody doesn’t matter. It will happen often and a lot. You will just have to get used to it.
The moderators on this site work hard and very effectively, and I speak from the experience of having comments biffed into the moderation queue three or five times a week. The mods bring them back fast. On occasion I’ve mentioned it but mostly I don’t because the mods are so good.
The autofilter is there so Jo isn’t prosecuted for publishing something you might say. They keep the blog within Australian law. There’s no 1st Amendment in Australia, so please whimper and whine quietly.

Why is it I can’t get to this blog using the normal link and instead I have to do a Google search to find the latest thread? The normal link still sends me to the “2.7 million votes switched and hints Dominion Whistleblowers came forward?” I’ve cleared the cache and made no difference. Chrome and Firefox.
10
No such issue using Apple
10
I can confirm both those observations. Windows 10 browsers are stuck on the 2.7 million and when I google to load a more recent post it is giving a truncated comments list.
42
oh well, time to fire up a linux based vmware image on me W10 box.
30
Linux has a few problems too.
Firefox (and derivatives, eg waterfox) only go start where you’re stuck at present.
Vivaldi (chrome/opera) browser mostly does ok with a little urging. I was totally unable to get in — one day possibly Monday this week — until 6p.m. Today (Wed), it’s been mostly ok.
Jo seems to have circumvented Cloudflare and that’s almost a cure. Firefox is still stopping at the second post, not the first. (Starting at yesterday’s’ post) and no amount of convincing will budge it onto today’s post.
00
I contacted my IT department, have you tried turning it off then on again.
20
Hi Peter. I’m using Windows 10 Business and having no problems accessing the latest articles in Firefox 82.0.3 (64-bit). Check that your Firefox is that version (which is the current supported official release).
Having the same problem as you using Chrome, on the same computer that Forefox doesn’t have the problem.
20
Thanks, it’s working now. First time since about last Friday. Still I will install a virtual image of Xubuntu just in case. I’ve been meaning to for some time.
00
I am having no trouble accessing the site with Firefox but if I try to uptick using the thumb up button I increase whatever the amount is by many more than one vote. Sadly when I refresh the page the vote returns to its starting position and so my presence on the site is immediately null and voided. A couple of days ago I thumbed up one of Jo’s comments and it doubled in an instant, but the euphoria was over as soon as I refreshed the page.
If you don’t see this comment you’ll know just how much of a phantom presence I have become.

We must get major geological societies to provide an alternative explanation to climate change based on the global climate & atmospheric history preserved in the Earth’s geological rock record. There is no alternative view based on geology. The public only get the climate alarmist view so the public think there is only one scientific view. We need to provide a comprehensive alternative based on the geology that clearly demolishes atmospheric CO2 as a climate driver & pollutant .

As many have noted, I have to repeat that climate change ‘science’ seems to be reverting to religious dogma and superstitious nonsense that it originally opposed and left behind in its wake.
Interesting phenomena that. Similar to the way movements that originally form to fight some social evil finish up practicing exactly what they first opposed (ANTIFA, BLM etc).
