This is a tweet from Democrat Senator Chris Murphy of Connecticut in response to Sen. Josh Hawley speaking out after announcing plan to object to electors. The lack of insight is breathtaking. ToM

“Let’s be clear – those contesting the Electoral College are trying to overthrow democracy. They want to turn America into a state akin to Russia or China, where elections are for show and one party rules. They won’t succeed this time, but the wound to democracy is severe”

Democrats always accuse the Right of what they are doing themselves.

Socrates would draw out the qualities of democracy, how they may be established and then contrast that with the behaviours of each group
and I’m guessing each would have things that count as for, neutral and against democracy

It is probable that the Left more carry the desire to constrain choice of the ‘deplorables’ than the Right
(and we then get into a debate as to what characterises Lt v Rt)

imho the things that make the left more likely to constrain democracy are : belief in superior intellect and information; motivated by ‘doing good for others’ ; consider that freedom for the unwashed lead to many vices (pick any); and the better option is to have a bureacracy advised by ‘science’ making the choices for us :: think masks, immunisation, smoking, voting for other parties … the list goes on

The defining characteristic of the Left, IMO, is their tendency to see themselves as members of an organised collective, or ‘gang’. Conservatives, OTOH, see themselves as individuals with individual rights AND responsibilities, who fight their own battles. Conservatives are not naturally herd members and it takes an awful lot to get them organised.

Leftists know that conservatives typically don’t have the protection of a gang and so can be targeted for bullying, abuse or actual harm, with little fear of retribution. Even quite weak and pathetic Lefties can feel strong when they’re part of a baying mob.

          Put simply, it’s playground politics.

This is the Left’s strength, and they know it. However, they are clearly terrified by the prospect of an organised Right. Why, they’re so scared of that prospect they have spent the last four years trying desperately to destroy the man who looked like he might get ordinary conservative Americans organised into a real resistance and they won’t give up till he’s been shot, beheaded, a stake put through his heart and his body burned – twice.

By your definition I’m a natural conservative but I voted until labor Rudd/Gillard/Rudd. I will never vote for them again as long as my bum points to the ground.

My excuse is that I was working said bum off, listening to Their ABC. Time and broad band cured that.

Their hatred is rabid. Mind you, he never did anything to engender their love. It seemed that he thought it was best to draw them out, and there I think he was right.

Four years ago their Nirvana was just over the hill. He came along and threw a spanner in their gears. So why wouldn’t they hate him?

But there was more. Their hatred led them to perform some criminal acts in an attempt to thwart his policies. To date they have escaped being charged with those crimes by drawing the process out. But they know that if they don’t achieve the presidency some of them will be going to gaol. If they fail to destroy Trump they won’t escape even with the presidency.

The hysteria in Brennan’s tweet tells me that he is in mortal fear.

What evidence do you have that Democrats want to turn America into a state akin to Russia or China, where elections are for show and one party rules?

Certainly Trump’s insistence that he won the election is a prime example of an election being just for show as he was soundly drubbed by Biden losing by some 7 million popular votes and getting 46.9% of the vote comared to Biden’s 51.3%.

If Mike Spence had listened to Trump that would have been making the election a farcical show. Fortunately he had the guts to stand up to Trump’s bullying as did Brad Raffensperger when he refused to “find 11780 votes” for Trump.

Despite courts up and down the US rejecting all butt one of Trump’s 50+ lawsuits on the basis that the evidence was merely hearsay or incorrect due to the lack of knowledge or understanding of the election process, Trump insisted the election was rigged.

You’re a scientist Jo used to evaluating the evidence for various claims. Do you really believe courts from SCOTUS down were deliberately lying when they gave written reasons as to why the evidence was unacceptable?

Look at the furore over 169000 votes suddenly appearing. That was due to the fact that Michigan insists all absentee votes must be counted before the total is submitted. That took till 3am and the results were then taken to the central counting chamber. Nothing sinister there.
Why not face facts? The evidence for fraud just isn’t there so claims by Trump are totally without foundation. He is the one wanting only one party to rule.

Neither actually. Some from AP News. Some from the ABC. Some from the Washington Post of which there are examples below. There are plenty of others

Trump has spread claims that voting software is “used in states where tens of thousands of votes were stolen from us and given to Biden.” He said in repeated tweets that Dominion Voting Systems is “horrible, inaccurate and anything but secure,” all of which were flagged by Twitter as disputed. He retweeted a baseless report that the voting-machine system had “deleted 2.7 million Trump votes nationwide.”

Reality: There is no evidence that any voting systems were compromised, according to the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, which is part of the Department of Homeland Security. “The systems and processes used by election officials to tabulate votes and certify official results are protected by various safeguards that help ensure the accuracy of election results,” the agency notes on its “Rumor Control” page that refutes disinformation and misinformation about the accuracy of the election results. “These safeguards include measures that help ensure tabulation systems function as intended, protect against malicious software, and enable the identification and correction of any irregularities.”

Over and over again, Trump and his allies failed to convince judges that their complaints overcame some of these hurdles. In many cases, they failed to demonstrate that they cleared any of them. Instead, judges repeatedly found that plaintiffs without standing filed cases that, per past precedent, were lodged too late, sometimes in the wrong courts, asking for disproportionate relief based on unsubstantiated claims.
Witness statements submitted by the campaign, for instance, were “self-serving statements of little or no evidentiary value,”wrote Russell in Nevada. So-called expert testimony “was of little to no value,” and a claim of ballot-stuffing in broad daylight asserted by an anonymous witness with no corroboration he termed “not credible.”

One of the most strongly worded opinions came from Wisconsin state Justice Brian Hagedorn, a onetime president of Northwestern University Law School’s chapter of the conservative Federalist Society, who served for more than four years as chief legal counsel to former Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R).

“Something far more fundamental than the winner of Wisconsin’s electoral votes is implicated in this case,” Hagedorn wrote, in declining to hear a case brought by a conservative group that asked the court to overturn the election results. “At stake, in some measure, is faith in our system of free and fair elections, a feature central to the enduring strength of our constitutional republic.”
“Once the door is opened to judicial invalidation of presidential election results, it will be awfully hard to close that door again. This is a dangerous path we are being asked to tread,” Hagedorn added.

In Pennsylvania, U.S. District Court Judge Matthew W. Brann, who served as the chairman of the Bradford County Republican Committee for more than a decade before taking the bench, compared the Trump campaign’s stitched-together legal theories to “Frankenstein’s monster.”
“This Court has been presented with strained legal arguments without merit and speculative accusations, unpled in the operative complaint and unsupported by evidence,” wrote Brann, days after he heard Trump’s attorney Rudolph W. Giuliani personally argue the case. “In the United States of America, this cannot justify the disenfranchisement of a single voter, let alone all the voters of its sixth most populated state. Our people, laws, and institutions demand more,” he concluded.

As is apparent Trump and his lawyers didn’t cut any ice with the judges in the examples cited not in any other court including SCOTUS which has 6 republican appointed judges and 3 judges appointed by the Democrats

Reading a dozen MSM sources does NOT mean you have have read a variety of opinion. They are a circle squad, pissing in each others’ pockets, all getting that nice warm feeling.

As the examples I have given are written by the judges who assessed the lawsuits. Where the report is accessed from is immaterial as the words ain’t gonna change because the law is not going to change from court to court. The reports are all very similar as the judges legal opinions are based on the law and the law is the same for all the judges. The condemnation of the lawsuits in having no worthwhile evidence is the same as the lawsuits were all the same. It ain’t pissing in one anothers’ pockets but ruling according to the letter of the law. And as that is consistent so are the verdicts.

Don’t like the verdicts? Don’t shoot the messenger but blame Trump and his useless campaign team who seem utterly incompetent as is apparent from the judges scathing remarks. Sorry you don’tlike the law Hanrahan but that ain’t my fault

Because they (the Democraps) are now drafting legislation to take away the people’s Constitutional right of assembly, and their Constitutional Right of Free Speach. That’s what, Legislation to remove people’s constitutional rights is evil.

I can’t be bothered trying to correct your ignorant statement about election fraud, because Jo has already done it. She did you the courtesy of posting a video — especially for the addlepates like you — to watch and learn from. What? It was just a video? You couldn’t be bothered watching it? Cheeze. You waste everyone’s time with your stupidity I will say: Trump now has the hard (<— note that word, little Ian, it's irrefutable) evidence of how it was done.

The two MI6 agents from the UK who helped with it all in Rome, yes Rome, are now on the run. They won't last long. All the baddies as well as the goodies want them …

The data went through the Italian govt's Leoardo (military) satellites. The Prime Minister Renzii, I believe, has been arrested. and the Acting Prime Minister Conti(?) was also involved
and is on very shaky ground. The Italians are asking — down on their knees and begging — to be able to say to the world "the Leoardo Satellites were hacked." The US may let them … as long as they do exactly what the US want.

Do you really believe courts from SCOTUS down were deliberately lying

Yes. They were and still are.

It’s all in the second video Jo posted on jan 11th. You have no excuse for not watching it.

I have Dyslexia. Have devil of a time seeing misspelled words or words used in the wrong context. Recently, quite by accident, I discovered a feature on WORD/REVIEW/READ ALOUD. I now write something in WORD, have it read back to me and any error stand out. It is also great for long articles often encountered on this site. Copy/paste into WORD and have it read the article to me. Works well for me anyway. Just a thought.

Trump didn’t ask Raffensperger to find 11780 votes for Trump – he expected Raffensperger to uncover 11780 illegally cast ballots for Biden.

Jo, President Trump has made his move…

The implementation of the Insurrection Act began after the raid on the Capitol and was marked by Trump’s broadcast to the people to disband and return home. This broadcast wound up being blocked, for the most part, by the media. Nevertheless, his address fulfilled the requirements to initiate the Act.
Marines and National Guard troops are being moved as needed for the riots that will start after the national release of the intel. The intel will be dropped for everyone to see and hear in loops that will be several hours long. The system was just checked by the FCC a few days ago alerting ALL media that they cannot block the flow of intel under federal regs.
Trump will be moved continuously like a chess piece from now until the 20th in order to avoid any retaliation against him and family.
Trump had to exhaust ALL other means legally before this operation could commence. He gave everyone a fair chance to come clean and they refused.
His press release of a “smooth transition” did not include the word, “concede” as he has no plans to do so. Rather, there will be a smooth transition of power to his new cabinet, staff and Vice President, General Flynn.

President Trump has made his move …

Donald Trump used the phrase “the Biden Administration” more than once, in his “farewell” speech at The Alamo in Texas today. He has conceded.

Large numbers of National Guard troops have been deployed in Washington DC (and presumable at state capitols) to protect politicians, the public, and property from any riotous activity by Trump supporters between now and 20 January.

The state is activating against pro-Trump forces, not against pro-Biden supporters. The Insurrection Act will be invoked if required, but perhaps not for the purpose that some pro-Trump supporters might wish.

Neither Mike Flynn nor Mike Pence will be Vice President after 20 January. Although there is a tiny possibility that Mike Pence could be President – but only up until noon on 20 January 2021.

If I am right Jojo and you are not, will you then stop re-posting wild rumours from the crazier corners of the Internet? Deal?

What Donald Trump is going to do about pardons remains intriguing … including whether he seeks one for himself. It would seem prudent that he gets one … there are powerful people who wish to get at him.

It is good to see the Democrats climbing out to the very end of the branch they are clinging to. This is evidence of their un-democratic madness, and the more we see of it, the more shaky the resolve of sensible Democrat voters will be. Whatever the number who voted for Biden -certainly not 81 million, maybe 70- a fair amount of them must by now be seriously worried about what they have taken part in. Goethe’s “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” springs to mind:

“Master, come to my assistance! –
      Wrong I was in calling
      Spirits, I avow,
      For I find them galling,
      Cannot rule them now.”

AGL and the various Green governments (including LINOs like NSW) are very lucky we are having a very mild summer (despite the BOM issuing its annual one of the hottest ever years gush) as the public anger to black and brownouts, if it had actually been hot, would be palpable.

Democrats always accuse the Right of what they are doing themselves

          .

          https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/climate-deniers-shift-tactics-to-inactivism/

Michael Mann is no stranger to the war against climate science. A climatologist at Pennsylvania State University who is currently studying the impact of climate change on extreme weather events, Mann is best known for the “hockey stick graph,” which he and his colleagues published in a 1998 scientific paper. The data visualization—featured prominently in former vice president Al Gore’s documentary An Inconvenient Truth—illustrates the precipitous rise in global temperatures since the dawn of the industrial era.

The graph also helped make the researcher a target of attacks by climate change deniers. Mann’s e-mails were stolen, and he was investigated by government bodies and received death threats in a years-long campaign he says was orchestrated by fossil fuel companies and their allies to discredit his work. Those experiences compelled him to “enter the fray” and “speak out about the very real implications of our research,” he wrote in an op-ed in the New York Times in 2014.

I do believe that a scientist would study if climate change actual would have an effect on extreme weather events ie look for evidence that the postulate was wrong. (No Big Oil cheque was recieved when formulating this opinion)

I don’t like those who say “I didn’t vote for Trump” and then bemoan the fact that his agenda will not be completed. Dershowitz is a classic. Says he is a democrat and then complains that the dem’s impeachment is unconstitutional. If so, don’t vote for them, it is kinda important.

Pakistan had a massive blackout as “frequency dropped”. Ya kiddin me, a “frequency drop” is an overload OR in truth an undersupply.

In the comments some bright spark said

it seems that it’s not just the actual frequency which matters, but the rate of change.

Eer no! A slow frequency drop merely allows you to shed load, hopefully preventing the need for a black restart.

        Both matter.

Enough frequency change causes generators to fall out of synch. As you stated, a slow frequency drop allows the operators to shed load or increase generation (inc battery output) in time to arrest and reverse the drop while a fast frequency drop may not provide enough time to prevent the generators tripping and hence the grid blackout.

Batteries are useful in providing very fast response, especially with automated control, but the question is why they are needed in the first place since we did so long without them? The answer lies with the renewable generators – not only are they highly intermittent, increasing the rate of possible frequency drop, but they also commonly lack synthetic inertia capability, since it’s an added cost that doesn’t increase nameplate output, so the grid has less inertia to maintain frequency stability, since synchronous generators get displaced by the renewables).

So once again, renewables add cost to the supply of reliable electricity without having to compensate consumers.

Also, over frequency events are just as bad in terms of grid stability as under frequency but are rarer and a little easier and less disruptive to deal with.

      el gordo:

There has been a follow up.

The trouble started in France where 15 nuclear power stations were shut down and wind in Germany was “delivering” less than 0.01% of installed capacity.

      Note:
      1) February 2021 is still to come, with even lower temperatures.
      2) Also interesting is that Poland has requested Germany to restart the nuclear power plants immediately , otherwise electricity power supply would be massively at risk.

Southern Germany. Bavaria and Austria could be kept stable, thanks to the Czech Republic grid (the Temelin and Dukovany nuclear power plants were in full operation). Bavaria has been the least excited of all States regarding renewables.

          Neither have I.
The problem seems to be concerns about CoVid transmission,
“more than a dozen workers – mostly contractors – had walked out over the issue in the nuclear plants of Fessenheim, Civaux and Chooz,”

Fessenheim (2 by 1GW) in the East has been ordered shut down, partly from German hysteria.
Flamanville (2 by 1.3GW) has been plagued by mechanical (sealing) problems, and the third unit under construction also. (Cotentin Peninsula near Channel)
Civaux and Chooz have problems with some workers worried about CoVid and presumably have also shut down.

38k thumbs up and 669 thumbs down.

He appears to be quite popular although it is a right side network – might be some bias with 1.25M subscribers.

Showing 12 hours at 7am when I looked.

Alamo would not be a good place to make a stand. The Mexican troops won that. On the other hand it gave the Texan’s the resolve to fight on and eventually claim victory.

All interesting, great story telling or a not so graceful slide into relative obscurity.

I am 2 degrees removed from Trump. The husband of a my wife’s closet friend met Trump a few decades ago and that meeting inspired him to start a new business enterprise that has been very successful in Australia. He was actually staggered that Trump made time for him as he just lobbed up unannounced. But then some of his success comes from taking opportunities as they present and that is how the meeting eventuated.

The opening “despite global warming:” gets me.

It is physically impossible for the surface of the globe to warm in the next decade, century or millennia short of a major asteroid hit that alters the surface distribution of water.

The global temperature has thermostatic control. It is held within very narrow range. Too cold and the cool ocean blankets grow. Too hot and the tropical ocean shutters go up.

This is a very interesting chart:
      https://1drv.ms/b/s!Aq1iAj8Yo7jNhArF7wOhjkSkQWa-
There is next to no net heat uptake when sea surface temperature exceeds 30C. The reason being that there is very little sea surface warmer than 30C because once it gets to that temperature most of the sunlight is reflected and the surface is actually cooling:
      https://1drv.ms/u/s!Aq1iAj8Yo7jNhBPDRJjxxmWoamp0

If it was possible to heat the water surface to 34C by some means, the shutters would be permanently closed:
      https://1drv.ms/u/s!Aq1iAj8Yo7jNhBGGUgx8VRSon9HW
The Persian Gulf is the one exception because the dry air from the north eliminates the possibility of cloudburst in the near land-locked waterway.

NIWA announced today that due to ‘accelerating climate change’ 2020 was NZ’s ‘seventh warmest year’. I’ll let everyone ponder on that mysterious mumbo-jumbo mathematics for a moment.

Due to a fraction of a degree’s difference, our ‘average’ temperature is now 13-point- something degrees Celsius above freezing. Do I look worried? Their records go back to 1909: I much prefer looking at the geological record where, f’rinstance, ~20 mya it was 7 degrees warmer than today and our climate resembled SE Queensland’s, minus the Crown Virus of course.

I’d say we are living in ‘interesting times’, albeit one-sided and totally biased as per media’s reportage – apart from Jo & co.

I am no vacc fan when there are so many good anti-viral alternatives and such a short testing time. But this kind of story doesn’t necessarily mean much. With so many vaccinations going on, and when a vaccine won’t even start to protect for a least a week, and probably longer, it is to be expected that a natural round of infections is going to happen at a place where vaccines have just happened.

Naturally, we need the data. I hope we get it.

powerbroker of the US Senate, but he’s also a guy whose in-laws own a major shipping company that buys container ships from a Chinese Government company. The in-laws make money from carrying goods back and forward in deals with Chinese State Owned companies.

McConnell’s wife is a Chinese-American and also happens to be The Transportation Secretary of the US Government (!). Since Elaine Chao took up that job four years ago, her fathers company has expanded rapidly and has added 40 percent more ships. Her father, James Chao, is a shipping magnate that gave his daughter and her husband McConnell a gift of at least $5 million in 2008. That’s the conservative estimate — it might have been worth as much as $25 million dollars. (Nice in-laws if you can get them.) The largess was legally disclosed. The net worth of the political couple went from $3m in 2004 to something between $9 and $36m by 2018.

The Chinese Ship building company is called CSSC Holdings. McConnell’s wife’s family is so close to it that both her father and her sister sit on the Board of the financial arm of this Chinese company they buy boats from. It’s odd, stacked on weird, wrapped up in long explanations. CSSC is not just a boat building company, it’s the Chinese government’s military contractor. Indeed, the letters CSSC stand for the China State Shipbuilding Corporation. Get it?

Following the storming of the US Capitol, and the fairly feeble defence of the building and its occupants, would you not expect the federal and state governments to react very strongly, with large deployments, for the days leading up to Biden’s inauguration?

Governments and law enforcement were highly embarrassed, and a lot of people would have been hauled across the carpet … they won’t let it happen again.

    Another “big tech – almost

    A “big tech” almost.

I’ve got my new computer and the first major discovery was that the Windows 10 version wouldn’t allow anything not via their app store. Which most of what I use wasn’t, having had enough of Microsoft’s “left handed and backwards” approach. And 24 hours of re-exposure didn’t change that view.

But there was a mention of being able to install such software via the clipboard – with no elaboration. And nothing on the net. So I posted a “help needed” at Chiefio and got this:-

“the following is from a Microsoft Help Page that directly relates to your issue:

Switching out of S mode in Windows 10
    Windows 10

Windows 10 in S mode is designed for security and performance, exclusively running apps from the Microsoft Store. If you want to install an app that isn’t available in the Microsoft Store, you’ll need to switch out of S mode. Switching out of S mode is one-way. If you make the switch, you won’t be able to go back to Windows 10 in S mode. There’s no charge to switch out of S mode.

On your PC running Windows 10 in S mode, open Settings > Update & Security > Activation.

In the Switch to Windows 10 Home or Switch to Windows 10 Pro section, select Go to the Store. (If you also see an “Upgrade your edition of Windows” section, be careful not to click the “Go to the Store” link that appears there.)

On the Switch out of S mode (or similar) page that appears in the Microsoft Store, select the Get button. After you see a confirmation message on the page, you’ll be able to install apps from outside of the Microsoft Store.”

Sure test is if you click on the tab at the bottom lhs then “settings”, “system”, then scroll down to “about ” and then down that list to the Windows details – it will say “in S mode”

The more this story of Trump’s departure plays out the more I am astonished that the so-called free press, including TV news and the Democratic Party, are so happy to humiliate the (still) POTUS. Nancy Pelosi is an extreme case with her disgusting antics – I still think her staged protest of tearing up the SotU address to his face diminished her more than him. He may not be a nice man – to some – but his democratic support and his position as Head of State surely requires that he be accorded some degree of respect. What is happening now is that it’s not just Trump being held up to ridicule but the whole USA – most especially among the USA’s enemies.

as she was sitting behind him, it was not his face she was addressing, which would diminish her even more!

    THERE WAS NO REVOLUTION

By Pamela Geller -January 12, 2021

There was no revolution. Everyone knows it.

A couple of crackpots who pranked at the Capitol are now being called a revolution. As if if that crazy ass, painted face shaman was leading – what are they calling it? Ah yes, insurrection.

There was a call by millions of Americans for election integrity. It was met with a “shoot to kill” order and then a GREAT PURGE. It wasn’t a revolution, it was more like an ambush. No one is asking who gave the shoot to kill order or who gave the order to invite protesters into the Capitol building.

We do know that the January 6, 2021 Capitol protesters were invited in:

DC police showing people THEY LET IN where to go!!! (tiktok.com)

What we do know is our people are peaceful, respectful and law-abiding. What we do know is we are a sub-class – “untouchables” – who have been brutally punished at every turn, most especially this past year by Democrat despots.

We do know is that we witnessed months of “insurrection” – burning cities, government buildings, streets, sometimes homes, and were told it was peaceful and necessary. That was insurrection

We watched Democrats take over the Hart Senate Building and State Capitol buildings and were told it was beautiful.

We do know that all talk of the greatest election theft in history has utterly and absolutely ceased.

In barely 48 hours the sitting President of the United States of America was erased from the digital world and cut off from the American people. His support networks burned to the ground. His 77 million voters dismissed as dissidents. That should scare all of us to the core.

China is killing us with coal (my latest research)

    https://www.cfact.org/2021/01/11/china-loves-coal-far-more-than-wind/

China is generating almost twice as much electricity as America and two thirds of that juice is coming from coal. Wind is a token generator at 5% and is not allowed to interfere with coal power. Anyone who thinks China is going to phase out coal for wind is simply green dreaming. Coal is central to China’s power.

    Please share this.

I never knew of Simon Parkes until someone here linked to him. So, curious, I subscribed.

Watch this video. I will watch it again in the morning with a clearer head.

Totally agree, David. China is building a coal-powered station every month. China’s rot about renewable energy is laughable, and the UN falls for it. Regarding wind generation, the only state in Australia that would find it useful is Tasmania. You could run that island entirely on renewables (Hydro + Wind + a bit of Solar), but as for the mainland…forget it (despite what intellectually challenged individuals like Zali Steggall think).

US vice-president-elect Kamala Harris has landed on the cover of the February issue of Vogue magazine, but her team says the photo of Ms Harris which appears on the cover was not what both sides had agreed upon.

Instead of the powder blue power suit Harris wore for her cover shoot, the first African American woman elected vice-president is instead seen in more casual attire and wearing Converse Chuck Taylor sneakers, which she sometimes wore on the campaign trail.

Our ABC upset that Vogue upset Kamala. Or showing that the media treats both sides of politics with the same contempt.

The other night on ABC News Radio/BBC World Service there was a show on Climate Change. When I switched it on, they were talking about Jakarta sinking into the sea (or the sea rising over Jakarta). A Dutch engineer was saying that keeping it above water wasn’t viable in the long term (disappointing, given my understanding that the Dutchman’s country is only above water thanks to the skill of Dutch engineers–you’d think they could help), then talk of relocating the capital to central Borneo, to the disproportionate benefit of the rich and bureaucrats, who could get there, while the poor would stay in Jakarta and lose everything to the tide. Is Jakarta disappearing under the water in the near future, anyone? (Or don’t we talk about this any more?)

      Its old news.

‘It sits on swampy land, the Java Sea lapping against it, and 13 rivers running through it. So it shouldn’t be a surprise that flooding is frequent in Jakarta and, according to experts, it is getting worse. But it’s not just about freak floods, this massive city is literally disappearing into the ground.’ (BBC)

… but the good news is that it has nothing to do with climate change.

Other examples are Venice Italy and Mexico City, but the latter was saved by pumping massive amounts of concrete into the ground.

If I remember correctly part of the problem, and possibly the main part, is that there’s been massive removal of ground water, causing subsidence.

main conclusion “that the land subsidence is also influenced by groundwater extraction” As in Mexico city etc.

A headline comment in the media:

DOJ, FBI say more than 170 charged in US Capitol riot: ‘This is only the beginning’

Will they be attending to the backlog of cases from last years BLM Riots, Aggression and Destruction first?

Is there something wrong with a “democracy” that has a selective legal, punitive system that won’t see crimes perpetrated by those with certain political alignments?

    Australians all let us despair
For we are split and banned
We’ve golden soil and petty rules
That keep us all locked up.
Our land abounds in premiers laws
And masks to keep us dumb
In history’s page let it be said
    We’ve lost Australia fair.

In saddened strains then let us mourn
    We’ve lost Australia Fair.

    Funny item over at Catallaxy.

Some did a comparison of entries at the ever lefty slanted Wikepedia.

Apparently Wikepedia has more to say about the recent storming of the Capital Building than World War II or general relativity or JFKs assassination or even Jesus Christ. Hysterical much?

Data for people interested in the current COV19 silliness in the UK.

From the notes within the as-downloaded data set :

“Because of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, our regular weekly deaths release now provides a separate breakdown of the numbers of deaths involving COVID-19. That is, where COVID-19 or suspected COVID-19 was mentioned anywhere on the death certificate, including in combination with other health conditions.

“Previously, the number of deaths with an underlying cause of respiratory disease was published a week behind the current week. These will now be published for the current week and revised the following week. Alongside this, a new bulletin summarises the latest weekly information and will be updated each week during the pandemic”

Data source is here ( csv file ) – click on green xlsx green box to download the file .
    https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/birthsdeathsandmarriages/deaths/datasets/weeklyprovisionalfiguresondeathsregisteredinenglandandwales

I might draw your attention to the wording

“That is, where COVID-19 or suspected COVID-19 was mentioned anywhere on the death certificate,
including in combination with other health conditions.”

    So clear as mud then……

    And:

“Estimated total death occurrences per week based on a statistical model, 2020, England and Wales 1,2,3

“Because the number of deaths registered in a given week is typically less than the number that actually occurred in that week, we have developed a statistical model to estimate the number of deaths likely to have occurred in each week, based on previous experience of the time taken for deaths to be registered.

So maybe COV19 caused a death, but also some fuzziness may exist around figures.

How do you navigate a storm, lockdown a population and upend whole economies with rubbery info?

The big story is the blizzard conditions in Spain and a new snow record.

‘Talking to Good Morning Europe, climate scientists Dr. Markus Donat said that Filomena was a truly exceptional weather event: “On one hand, we had this low-pressure system that moved from the Atlantic over the Iberian Peninsula. And this low-pressure system hit a stream of very cold air from the Polar Arctic region, combined with large precipitation provided by the same low-pressure system created the perfect conditions for this storm and this record amount of snowfall.” (Electrverse)

Emerging democracies need to be encouraged, even if they are not exactly free and fair. Small steps to eventually embrace the whole concept of democracy is the best way forward.
