ClimateStrike: The oldest mass protestors still willing to “strike” for climate change are children

Did any of them even give up their pocket money this week?

When you can’t talk adults and real voters into marching en masse or losing pay in an actual strike, the only protesters left are children — the cheapest “Rent-a-crowd” around.

Is there any audience easier to find on a weekday than school children told they can skip school for a walk in the park? There are 4 million school students in Australia, and less than 0.5% may have turned up today.

#ClimateStrike: Why not let ten year olds set national energy policy?.

What are these students learning?

ClimateStrike

Advanced grid management?

We all know why they don’t hold these protests on the weekend:

Child protestors, Australia, climate change.

These students are learning that old people are selfish and dumb, and that 80 year olds don’t realize “there is no spare planet”. Let’s teach them humility, and history and why Autocrats always use children to sell their agendas.

Chumpy cliches make for cute TV moments as long as journalists don’t ask any hard questions. But they don’t solve the high maintenance costs of collecting low density energy across vast square kilometers of wilderness.

Let’s teach our children what inertia and 50Hz frequency stability means instead, and why intermittent renewables can’t provide either. Let’s take them on tours of coal plants run by actual engineers. Let’s use government funding to make computer games where students have to design national electricity grids with real costs (not subsidies). Let them figure out how to go “net zero” on a 10GW grid, when every system blackout costs a billion dollars, battery storage lasts 3 minutes, and fuel makes up only a tiny part of the total bill.

There is still no evidence CO2 will cause a catastrophe.

As I noted, there is nothing about science and nothing about Global Warming. Look at the placards. Koalas, fracking, good planet, dinosaurs, trees, fossils, old age, no future and only two which mention Climate Change which is meaningless. Not a thing about Global Warming now. Or why CO2 or fossil fuels are a problem to anyone, anywhere. Nothing. These are children.

In just a decade rapid runaway tipping point end of days Global Warming became Climate Change became Climate Extinction became Carbon neutrality. And all right thinking people want carbon neutrality, whatever that is?

These children have no idea what they are protesting.

CO2 is essential to all life on earth. CO2 is 50x more soluble than oxygen and fish need to breathe, so if O2 goes into the water, so does all the CO2. CO2 is in balance and we have no control over CO2 and 98% of all CO2 is in the ocean. But those are science facts. What these children are protesting against are the lies told by their teachers. That is the real problem, adults using children as weapons, as in Gaza. And it is this generation of children who will find themselves in a third world country.

Inculcated by the decision makers of the Education dept and Teachers federation
Kids are clueless unless indoctrinated. I tell this and accuse stupid – and I mean stupid teachers in my domain that they are destroying their charges. Education is f..ked!

Our piss poor education fails to inform our kids all the items that are created from fossil fuels to give them this current lifestyle of not being in labor camps and surviving from day to day.
So far the education system is now creating ‘Professional Activists’ for any cause that is needed by our new generation of ‘pre-programmed sheep’.

I see no problem in letting 10 year olds determine national energy policy. Society’s level of debate and thinking is about the same level so it is quite fitting.

This afternoon as I was driving I heard an interview on an ABCCCC radio station.

A year 12 student has taken the day off school to protest about “Climate Change” and the need for action. She spoke for several minutes, and didn’t actually say anything at all. It was just filling the air with waffle and victimhood.

Bushfires, the Koalas, carbon, flooding, and on and on.

And at the end of the rant, she had said nothing about truth, reality, or common sense.

    The reality escaped her.

Governments can minimise bushfire deaths and damage: but they don’t bother, it’s only voters who get caught.

People can build on flood plains, there’s profit in them there plains.

Having just been through one of the coolest summers in my life I can’t feel any threat from Wobal Glorming nor believe anything that our BOM says about “temperature records”.

    But let’s all protest.

Its not the kids, it’s the parents who don’t see the irony.

“You’ll die of old age. We’ll die from Climate Change.” They’ll also die of old age before they see Climate Change.
33 years after rapid Global Warming was announced to the US Congress in June 1988, a third of a century, where is it? Most countries are experiencing rapid cooling, so nothing is said.

And Coal is Australia’s second biggest export and pays for all the clothes and signs and cars and cameras and computers. But I suppose only people overseas are allowed enjoy to coal. I certainly hope those children enjoy their Green jobs, dressed in rags and living on Quinoa and Kale.

Lose manufacturing and you lose. Australia knew that after WWII, but everyone seems to have forgotten.

The latest misinformation in the grasping at straws in the Global Warming department is that the Arctic is warming three times faster than the rest of the planet. Is that because the rest of the planet is not warming at all? Odd then that sea ice levels are normal after 33 years.

      260

      • #
        TdeF

And we are still being told ‘Arctic sea ice looks set to be an early victims of rising temperatures, with each fraction of a degree making a big difference’. Really? After 33 long years of rapidly rising temperatures and sea ice melting in the Arctic, why is the sea ice still there?

There’s something wrong with this as sea ice reached its record maximum extent on 21 March 2021 So under the pretext of saying that the sea ice is going to vanish (in summer), they announce a record extent.(In winter). Can anyone see a problem with this logic?

And what about those vanishing Polar Bears? And the missing Caribou? Is there any Climate Change news which is not so ridiculously distorted to create dramatic scary news when there is no real change at all. That sea ice is going to vanish soon. Sure.

        230

        • #
          TdeF

And if it did vanish in summer, why wouldn’t that be a great thing? After all, the real problem is ice which does not melt in summer.

The message that needs to be sent to these Marxist teachers and their students is that you don’t need a government to force you to make a change that you can do all by yourself right now, simply by turning off the power to your own house. In fact it would be a good experience for the kids to live for one week without power in the middle of winter so they can experience first hand what it would be like to remove all fossil fuel sources of energy.

Speaking of children….i was trying to explain to a nice but clueless 35yo that our baseload is the equivalent of 18,000 kettles. Helps to visualise the load….

Anyway, I asked a question – how do you keep that baseload going when the sun dont shine and the wind dont blow?

    *crickets*

And I said – the core issue is that lawyers (MPs ) in parliament are making engineering descisions…..and are bad at it.

    220

    • #

They keep base load going by running coal plants inefficiently

      33

    • #

The average kettle (electric water boiling appliance) is rated at around 2.5KW.

The Base Load is 18,000MW, so that’s 7.2 million ‘kettles’.

Nice analogy though. (Man, turn that lot on all at once and Oz goes ….. blink, cough)

Ask your friend how much power is being consumed in the Country while he (and the rest of the Country) are sound asleep at 4AM.

Now THAT’S where you’ll see cluelessnesslessness. (I think I’ve got a touch of the Harvey Manfrenjensendens)

The things I could do with a 1 megawatt kettle though…. think!

But yes, conversion to kettles is a good idea. Though all the kettles I looked at recently were in the order of 1.5kw to 2kW. Is the average still 2.5kw? Probably some energy saving genie has snuck in and shrunk the kettles, not realizing that they still need the exact same joules to boil water, it’s just slower.

The new and improved appliance is the computer doing bit-coin mining.
The WSJ has an article (by By Brian Spegele and Caitlin Ostroff) about refurbishing coal power facilities to provide the electricity. A claim is made that world-wide the electricity to “mine bitcoin” is high and growing rapidly. Theme of the article is that investors may be making a big mistake throwing money at this.
A University of Cambridge index pegs the annual power consumption of bitcoin mining at around 130 terawatt-hours, more than three times higher than at the beginning of 2019. That would be more than the power consumption of Argentina.

          100

          • #
            TdeF

            130 terawatt hours! This is 2x Australia’s total load of 18,000 Megawatts. 18 x3600 x 10^9 = 64,800 x10^9 = 64.8×10^12 or 65 terawatt hours for the whole country.

Why are Australians destroying and replacing their perfectly good generation system to ‘save the planet’ when financial speculators are consuming twice our entire consumption for nothing?

Wouldn’t it be easier to stop bitcoin mining?

            120

            • #

The Base Load is that figure 18,000MW.

However, Australia’s total yearly power consumption (just slightly less than the total power consumption, accounting for some losses) is now 205TWH a year, slowly rising now, after plateauing at 197TWH back in 2014. The ‘rolling’ total for the last 12 Months from today back a full 365 days is just under 203TWH, thanks to a benign and cooler Summer with less power consumption for that Season.

That Bitcoin mining is a monstrously humungous consumer of electricity. I bet you won’t hear of the green supporters complaining about that.

And Joanne, you are correct about the ‘kettles’, as they (also) are coming down in power rating.

There is one thing though. With all of the power savings that come hand in hand with technology improving, hence much less power consumption across the whole range of electrical everything, that Base Load figure has remained pretty much stable at 18,000MW for many years now, and while overall power consumption (on an Australia wide basis) started to fall from the high in 2010, falling by around 2TWH a year, it has started rising again each year.

So, even while technology wrt power consumption advances, saving more power, that total power consumption is still on the rise.

You just do NOT get 207TWH a year from ANY renewable source anywhere on the Planet, considering that 75% of that is required ABSOLUTELY for 24 hours of every day.

              Tony.

        • #
          Richard Jenkins

          It’s just slower.
The kettle’s ambient temperature is cooling the water as the element heats it.
Being slower therefore makes it use power longer and hence more.
To heat the same mass it is more economical to buy a higher wattage.

Some years ago when we were living in a more rural house we had a series of power cuts so bought a two kw generator which was quite a chunky beast.

It really struggled to boil just a kettle. It would be instructive if children just realised the enormous amount of energy needed to do the most mundane tasks by providing them with a generator and seeing how many gadgets they could run off it and then do the same test with solar panels to see how many we’re needed. Repeat at night

There is no maybe about it. Anyone who can read will know that since the turn of the century the change in Earth’s global mean surface temperature has been close to zero.
