These students are learning that old people are selfish and dumb, and that 80 year olds don’t realize “there is no spare planet”. Let’s teach them humility, and history and why Autocrats always use children to sell their agendas.
Chumpy cliches make for cute TV moments as long as journalists don’t ask any hard questions. But they don’t solve the high maintenance costs of collecting low density energy across vast square kilometers of wilderness.
Let’s teach our children what inertia and 50Hz frequency stability means instead, and why intermittent renewables can’t provide either. Let’s take them on tours of coal plants run by actual engineers. Let’s use government funding to make computer games where students have to design national electricity grids with real costs (not subsidies). Let them figure out how to go “net zero” on a 10GW grid, when every system blackout costs a billion dollars, battery storage lasts 3 minutes, and fuel makes up only a tiny part of the total bill.
There is still no evidence CO2 will cause a catastrophe.
As I noted, there is nothing about science and nothing about Global Warming. Look at the placards. Koalas, fracking, good planet, dinosaurs, trees, fossils, old age, no future and only two which mention Climate Change which is meaningless. Not a thing about Global Warming now. Or why CO2 or fossil fuels are a problem to anyone, anywhere. Nothing. These are children.
In just a decade rapid runaway tipping point end of days Global Warming became Climate Change became Climate Extinction became Carbon neutrality. And all right thinking people want carbon neutrality, whatever that is?
These children have no idea what they are protesting.
CO2 is essential to all life on earth. CO2 is 50x more soluble than oxygen and fish need to breathe, so if O2 goes into the water, so does all the CO2. CO2 is in balance and we have no control over CO2 and 98% of all CO2 is in the ocean. But those are science facts. What these children are protesting against are the lies told by their teachers. That is the real problem, adults using children as weapons, as in Gaza. And it is this generation of children who will find themselves in a third world country.

This afternoon as I was driving I heard an interview on an ABCCCC radio station.
A year 12 student has taken the day off school to protest about “Climate Change” and the need for action. She spoke for several minutes, and didn’t actually say anything at all. It was just filling the air with waffle and victimhood.
Bushfires, the Koalas, carbon, flooding, and on and on.
And at the end of the rant, she had said nothing about truth, reality, or common sense.
The reality escaped her.
Governments can minimise bushfire deaths and damage: but they don’t bother, it’s only voters who get caught.
People can build on flood plains, there’s profit in them there plains.
Having just been through one of the coolest summers in my life I can’t feel any threat from Wobal Glorming nor believe anything that our BOM says about “temperature records”.

But yes, conversion to kettles is a good idea. Though all the kettles I looked at recently were in the order of 1.5kw to 2kW. Is the average still 2.5kw? Probably some energy saving genie has snuck in and shrunk the kettles, not realizing that they still need the exact same joules to boil water, it’s just slower.

A claim is made that world-wide the electricity to “mine bitcoin” is high and growing rapidly. Theme of the article is that investors may be making a big mistake throwing money at this.
“A University of Cambridge index pegs the annual power consumption of bitcoin mining at around 130 terawatt-hours, more than three times higher than at the beginning of 2019. That would be more than the power consumption of Argentina.“

130 terawatt hours! This is 2x Australia’s total load of 18,000 Megawatts. 18 x3600 x 10^9 = 64,800 x10^9 = 64.8×10^12 or 65 terawatt hours for the whole country.

The Base Load is that figure 18,000MW.
However, Australia’s total yearly power consumption (just slightly less than the total power consumption, accounting for some losses) is now 205TWH a year, slowly rising now, after plateauing at 197TWH back in 2014. The ‘rolling’ total for the last 12 Months from today back a full 365 days is just under 203TWH, thanks to a benign and cooler Summer with less power consumption for that Season.
That Bitcoin mining is a monstrously humungous consumer of electricity. I bet you won’t hear of the green supporters complaining about that.
And Joanne, you are correct about the ‘kettles’, as they (also) are coming down in power rating.
There is one thing though. With all of the power savings that come hand in hand with technology improving, hence much less power consumption across the whole range of electrical everything, that Base Load figure has remained pretty much stable at 18,000MW for many years now, and while overall power consumption (on an Australia wide basis) started to fall from the high in 2010, falling by around 2TWH a year, it has started rising again each year.
So, even while technology wrt power consumption advances, saving more power, that total power consumption is still on the rise.
You just do NOT get 207TWH a year from ANY renewable source anywhere on the Planet, considering that 75% of that is required ABSOLUTELY for 24 hours of every day.

The kettle’s ambient temperature is cooling the water as the element heats it.
Being slower therefore makes it use power longer and hence more.
To heat the same mass it is more economical to buy a higher wattage.

Some years ago when we were living in a more rural house we had a series of power cuts so bought a two kw generator which was quite a chunky beast.
It really struggled to boil just a kettle. It would be instructive if children just realised the enormous amount of energy needed to do the most mundane tasks by providing them with a generator and seeing how many gadgets they could run off it and then do the same test with solar panels to see how many we’re needed. Repeat at night

The public education systems around the world seem to have turned into indoctrination systems. Four out of five schoolchildren in the UK and the US and Canada will spend thirteen years in school and still be illiterate at the end. I don’t know what the equivalent statistic is for Australia and NZ, but I doubt that it is very different.

Long ago most students left after 10 years of schooling to intermediate level and they were quite competent.
The current options are 11 years, 13years and university and I believe that the added years were only adopted to keep the unemployment figures at a level that didn’t disturb the voters.
