“Maybe some people simply approve of the blog, and some don’t. Most who comment here obviously approve.”

Of course they do as most of the comments serve to reinforce their prejudices. That’s why anyone who dares challenge these prejudices is very unwelcome in this echo chamber of right wing conservatism. That said JoNova herself does not have that attitude and her replies are based on the merit of the comment’s content and indeed from time to time posts comments that do not agree with the majority opinion.

Most forums are like that. You get a coterie of 10-20 regulars who post interminably – same stuff week after week – and anyone who challenges their echo-chamber orthodoxy is vilified.

The way of the world I guess.

Jo isn’t too bad, but has a few hot buttons – the Trump Big Lie (although that is fading, thankfully), the [snips] in China, and that new old standby, Ivermectin.

And no, this is not a “right-wing” blog.

It is a centrist blog, based on science and rational thought, rather than “feelings” virtue-seeking.

Fidel, Che and Leon would seem right-wing conservative to you.

      Push-back. They don’t like it.

An Adelaide business owner has banned VACCINATED customers from his shop. He acted after a nearby winery banned non-vaccinated customers.

The move has sparked outrage among the community with residents labelling it unfair. Keep the spike proteins and the tainted super-spreaders out. Sounds quite fair to me.

University of South Australia emeritus professor Rick Sarre said no discrimination laws around vaccination status have been made, so the owner has broken no discrimination laws.

The owner of Gigantic Signs said Australia’s vaccination campaign was ‘tantamount to murder’.

What is the point – other than gratuitous, egregious culture-war stuff copied straight from the crazed Yanks?

If a business bans the Vaccinated, (a) how does the business know you’re vaccinated, and (b) why would a vaccinated person want to use the business anyway?

          You will tell them.
          B) So you can cry discrimination while calling them white supremacists.

Yes, it’s culture war. But it’s a retaliation, not an instigation.

No, it’s not gratuitous (in the sense you mean. But it is free of charge) and it’s not egregious. It’s holding a mirror up to discrimination.

I wrote to Walgreens (in U.S. via email) asking if they were preventing Ivermectin prescriptions from being filled.

The reply showed they were on both sides of the issue!!
    a) “Walgreen’s stance is that we do not prohibit the dispensing of Ivermectin.”
    b) “It is our pharmacist’s clinical judgment on whether they will dispense the medication in good faith.” This was followed by information which was negative about Ivermectin.

My interpretation is that Walgreens is doing everything they can to block Ivermectin, while trying to protect themselves from lawsuits by claiming they are not prohibiting its dispensing.

    https://dailysceptic.org/2021/09/16/another-study-claims-to-show-masks-work-against-covid-but-it-does-no-such-thing/

Personally I would agree with the Daily sceptics conclusion, having observed this for 15 months in the UK (I do get some strange looks) I would say that if a surgical mask is worn to a surgeons rigorous hygienic standards, not fiddled with and changed as necessary, then they will work.

In real world conditions I have never seen a person wear a surgical mask to such standards, indeed the overwhelming majority of the general public wear them extremely badly, constantly fiddle with them, thereby breaking the ‘seal’ and rarely change them, let alone after every visit. Washable ones remain largely unwashed.

So the question more is “does wearing filthy masks of the wrong standards, very poorly, work, or is it more likely to spread viral loads to yourself or others in the belief you have got protection against the virus?”

Large amounts of state and private funding required to carry out definitive research.

There has been a great deal of interest in the UK regarding the new defence pact with most thinking it a good idea in order to try to deter China- (although China is never mentioned) Dane Geld and the Vikings is frequently cited-if you back down in front of a bully they will keep coming back for more.

    https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10001967/China-flies-TEN-aircraft-including-fighter-jets-Taiwans-airspace.html

It will take some years before the subs are ready, so presumably the new pact will take shape with existing forces

    https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10001967/China-flies-TEN-aircraft-including-fighter-jets-Taiwans-airspace.html

Will China attack Taiwan before the pact gets off the ground? If Afghanistan is anything to go by China will not expect Biden to try to stop them. Whatever people thought of Trump, his unpredictability meant foes could never be sure of his reactions.

Trump used to goad the media into attacking him because he knew each attack he ignored demonstrated their impotence. Sometimes he had to squirm and look hurt to encourage the bullies to making ever nastier claims about him. In this way he co-opted them to expose their real agenda. Brilliant!

The pigeons are coming home to roost in the UK (and things look messy).
“electricity prices surge to record levels… day-ahead prices are triple those of a year ago… Arguably the biggest factor this year has been the doubling of carbon prices,
UK wholesale electricity prices have doubled since this time last year.

“huge tranches of reliable, dispatchable generation have been shut down both here and in Europe. In the UK, for instance, coal and oil generating capacity has dropped from 29 GW to just 6 GW in the last decade. To put this into perspective, UK demand peaks at around 50 GW, so we have lost half of this. Gas was supposed to make up those losses but Gas power capacity is no higher today than it was in 2010. Because of the obscene subsidies paid to renewable generators, as well as rising carbon prices, new gas power plants are simply not economically viable. We still have 35 GW of gas capacity, the same as ten years ago. Imports have increased, but these are unreliable as individual countries (Ireland) close off exports or interconnectors fail (as recently with fire in one from France).
Things will get worse next year when the forced closure of all nuclear power in Germany next year, where it still accounts for a tenth of electricity.
See Not A Lot of People Know that.

And yesterday was back to normal with police standing back to watch construction workers blocking intersections protesting at the loss of their tea rooms.

Like most things I wonder what the powers controlling the police were thinking. Every other protest in living memory has been waved through. This time the police decided to be aggressive and overpower the protest plainly armed with all sorts of sprays and weapons. And now public transport has been shut down with only approved people permitted inside fortress Melbourne. And some presumably high ranking police officer warning protesters that there will be trouble if they try protesting again.

Maybe a show of strength that seemed like a good idea at the time? Maybe a honeypot operation that got out of hand? What could possibly go wrong?

Of course the tearooms issue was a ploy – an ambit claim. The real issue on construction sites is forced injections or else forfeit your right to work. This is coercion, which is illegal.
Andrews was obviously concerned that not enough in the industry could be successfully shepherded
into the vaccine fold, so threw the tearoom lockout in as a diversion just so his union mates – yes, you Setka – could play the hero card by agreeing to mandated injections in return for re-instatement of shed access and convincing the members to accede to Dan’s commandment. It will be interesting to see what happens on site on Monday, as the forecast is for rain. This usually means the crews retire to the sheds until the call is made on whether work will resume for the day. No access to sheds means they will simply make their own call and go home and claim the days pay.
One member who is very close to me received his union dues request yesterday and promptly tore it in half unopened.
I can tell you now that CFMEU members are tearing up their memberships in disgust. Perhaps the union bosses will get the message when they realise there is no money flowing into the coffers to pay their disproportionally large and totally undeserved salaries.

Murphy’s law of design. If anything can go wrong, it will.

I wonder how much longer it is going to take for people to wake up. There are cheap fuels out to be had and that these fuels will not endanger us humans and the environment.

‘Fossil Fuels’ will run out 50, 100 or 500 hundred years from now and renewables will not cut it.

The only solution is Molten Salt Reactors. India, Indonesia and China are leading the forefront in this alternative energy source, which will last for thousands of years.

Do not take my word look it up for yourselves.

      A spaniel in the works:

According to a professional rock-doctoring mate, the Russians have a few different views. “Abiogenesis” is the key word..

Basically, “petrochemicals” are NOT “fossil fuels”, like coal. The working hypothesis is that petrochemicals are “made” in the gigantic “retort” that is the crustal depths, a geologically lively zone, indeed.

Interesting case study is the State of Pennsylvania, which has a LOT of coal and LOT of oil; NOT “co-located”, but in widely different geological structures, which is not entirely surprising given how much the North American continent has been shuffled about in the last couple of hundred million years. Alaska has OIL, Then again, Alaska was not in its current location many millions of years ago, nor were , most other serious bits of real estate, either. The Gobi Desert is littered with oil rigs, as well as is part of Romania. Not far offshore of Southern Vietnam is the “Great Bear” oil and gas field; and on it goes. The stuff has been leaking to the surface forever. The most famous example of this are the La Brea tar pits in California., but “pitch” is mentioned in middle-eastern texts thousands of years old; the stuff continues to ooze out of the ground in places in that region.

The planet is a very dynamic system. It is not some Sylvan Glade, set in aspic.

Almost a quarter of the land area of Queensland is sitting on top pf coal deposits that are often tens of metres in thickness..

South-Western Queensland is also dotted with seismic survey “lines” used by the big Schlumberger ground-shaker trucks and with capped oil and gas wells. NOBODY plonks a big blue “Christmas tree” on a dry borehole. The stuff I saw coming out of the ground in the Tintaburra field was VERY light crude. So light, that the local graziers discovered that, with a bit of filtering, it was functional as a diesel fuel in their machinery. Not recommended for the S-Class Mercedes, perhaps. And nothing like the thick sulphurous, light-fraction-poor goo than comes from the Middle east.

Speaking of Sulphur: The hard black coal from the the big Queensland mines has EXTREMELY low Sulphur. That is why it is a hot item (so to speak) for coking coal customers. Sulphur is NOT a good thing to have in “serious” steels, especially “stainless” steels used in “high-stress” applications, because it interferes with the crystal structure and reduces “toughness”. There are special “sulphured” steels but these are used for entirely different purposes. Australian oils have extremely low Sulphur., which is a good thing and makes our fuels quite desirable…… Sulphur is associated with Vulcanism, something for which Australia is not particularly famous since over fifty million years ago. Then again, if you have ever had a hot shower in Quilpie……

The stuff beneath our feet is what used to be called “assets”, these days, more like “targets”.

OK, I am just back from the Melbourne protest.

I received word from a friend that the meeting point had been changed, about an hour before the planned start from the CBD (cnr Elizabeth and Latrobe Sts) to the Richmond Town Hall (cnr Bridge Rd and Church St).

That happened to suit my plan which was to drive and park in Richmond, then walk 3km to the city.

The change of plan seemed to catch the Police on the hop because there were very few there until about 12 midday. That soon changed and before long, hundreds of police arrived eventually reaching 2000 police (so I am told). The Police formed a line, three deep across the full width of Bridge road, blocking access to the city. The protesters then promptly turned around and moved away from the city at which the Police had to run to catch up to them, which looked a bit undignified. This led to a rather fluid situation with the protesters changing course multiple times, into side streets. The Police were trying to anticipate their moves and set up strong control lines across streets each with hundreds of police.

My involvement was rather distant as I preferred to observe events from just outside the police lines, rather than inside and hence the events were often out of sight. I did see several incidents where protesters moved up to shout at the police and were promptly sprayed in the face with some sort of spray. Probably they were wearing face protectors because they did not seem to be affected. I did not personally see any attacks on police.

I would describe a lot of the protesters that I saw as young, and often heavily tattooed lesser bohemians. There were older people. One woman who I would think was likely 70 asked if I was part of the protest. I said yes but I was participating at a distance. She asked which way so I pointed 50m down the street and she headed off that way and I think went straight in to the middle of the protest crowd. I was impressed by her courage and commitment.

I suspect that there were more police than protesters. I hope that the television footage shows the police reaction as heavy handed and over the top.

      130

      • #

I hope that the television footage shows the police reaction as heavy handed and over the top.

Well that did not happen, but the figures speak for themselves. 2000 police and 750 protesters.

I did not see all of it, being somewhat back from the action. The breakout charge which seems to have resulted in most of the police injuries occurred quite a way from where I was.

My analysis of the media reports and the police statements and what I saw indicates to me that the police were trying to crush the protest and were closing in when the protesters were trapped in the Barkers Rd cutting. If they had taken a more stand off attitude I doubt if there would have been any violence. I disagree with the commissioner on that. He claimed that there were angry young men intent on violence. My interpretation is protesters trying to escape an arrest trap.

I count the protest as a win for the protesters, despite their small numbers. 700 odd active protesters and several hundred more supporters (like me) caused the police to parade almost their entire strength, including many previously unseen new riot control vehicles. The cost to the police budget is said to be $500,000 but it could be more. A few more such protests will stain the police resources to the max.

Covid vaccine segregation? This isn’t 1950s Alabama

      Steve Waterson
      Commercial Editor

Just when we thought, for a precious moment, that the pop-eyed, angst-ridden halfwits posturing atop our political dungheap were backing out of our lives, here they come again with another nonsensical, divisive scheme to extend the torture as far as their tunnel vision can see.

As we approach the arbitrary 70 or 80 per cent vaccination targets they have set to grant our conditional release from the restrictions which, don’t forget, they also set, their backroom teams have come up with a punishment for the remaining 20 per cent who for medical, philosophical or other reasons (and let’s, as a sop to the morally perfect, include wickedness and stupidity among them) refuse the injections.

Make no mistake, dissenters will be punished for disobedience. The NSW Premier indicated as much last week. “I don’t want people to think they can sit back and let everybody else do the hard work,” she said. “If you’re not vaccinated you will not have the freedom or the freedoms that vaccinated people have.”

In case you’re thinking we should go along with this in the hope society’s settings can return to normal, the Premier gave us a little glimpse of the future she has planned: “So long as Delta has presence in the world,” she said, “even if we had zero cases and we were at 80 per cent double-dose, you would still have to respect rules that exist around vaccinations, around social distancing, around mask-wearing.” So that’s that forever, then.

Her counterpart in Victoria was even more spitefully explicit. “There is going to be a vaccinated economy, and you get to participate in that if you are vaccinated,” he said. “We are going to lock out people who are not vaccinated.”

Inconveniently, however, there are explicit laws against forcing medical intervention on people against their will, so with malign ingenuity our leaders turn punishment of the minority into reward for the majority, and conspire to outsource the policing of the new order to ordinary citizens.

No need for unflattering government edicts, just a robust suggestion that business owners and employers might like to devise their own sanctions, in a cowardly masterclass in buck-passing.

Demonise the unvaccinated, then say: “Don’t blame us for your loss of freedom, blame them!”

That our politicians and police should be actively encouraging a culture of informing is vile and unspeakable. I struggle to find the words to describe them, and when I do they’re not fit for a family newspaper. To be honest, they’re not fit for a sailors’ newspaper.

When a government says an abhorrent practice is not only permitted but encouraged, with expensive advertisements exhorting us to call the police hotline to dob in our neighbours, then there will always be a sickeningly large group who will obey with glee.

Maybe it’s not just the politicians and the intellectually challenged; our entire country is turning into the ant colony of The Once and Future King, whose motto was “Everything not forbidden is compulsory”.

We’ve put up with this utter insanity so meekly, followed palpably absurd rules so obediently, and for so long, we may have to accept we’re all idiots.

      Torture Forever

Governments are loving their Covid lockdowns and restrictions just a little bit too much – which is why they’re disinclined to lift them, now or deep into the future.

      Tim Blair

      UPDATE:

The Andrews government has criticised the “unacceptable” behaviour of workers who staged smoko protests in the streets and warned the entire construction industry could be closed.

Those workers are one step ahead of you, Dan:

Workers on the state government’s multi-billion dollar infrastructure projects have walked off the job in protest of new Covid-19 restrictions.

Chaos is now erupting across the industry, with more walk-offs being planned by unions and their workforces.

UPDATE II. Further anti-Andrews action in Melbourne:

Protesters in growing numbers marched along Bridge Road, chanting “no more lockdown”.

Dozens of men in fluro work clothes are among the demonstrators chanting “sack Dan Andrews” and “we will not comply” …

Maskless protesters have been seen shouting at police, who have been forced to use capsicum foam to keep the illegal gathering under control.

      UPDATE III:

Sydney protest organisers are using a live traffic app to outwit police, alerting each other of potential roadblocks as they head to a rally site in western Sydney …

It can be revealed protesters are communicating to each other about potential police roadblocks as seen on the live traffic app “Waze”.

When a government says an abhorrent practice is not only permitted but encouraged, with expensive advertisements exhorting us to call the police hotline to dob in our neighbours, then there will always be a sickeningly large group who will obey with glee.

A Canadian historian, Robert Gellately, has studied the surviving files of the G@stapo, which reveal more than 80 per cent of their investigations were commenced in response to a denunciation by ordinary German citizens.

The G@stapo had only a few thousand members; there was no need for a massive Big Brother secret police force when local people were so eager to report their neighbours. Similar research has led to the same conclusions about similar regimes.

It’s confronting to abandon the illusion that we would have had the moral strength to stand up against the tyrannies of history, but face it: there are people in our society today who you could easily see in 1930s Berlin tugging on the sleeve of their local Gestapo officer and whispering, “Excuse me, commissar, but I think the people at number 24 might be J@wish.”

Yes I know, the first person to mention the N@zis loses the argument, but this one has looked unwinnable since the beginning, so what the hell.

A “vaccine passport” now looks to be a real possibility, presumably because sensible countries around the world have considered and swiftly rejected the idea.

It will divide our society into two categories (castes, if you prefer): the vaccinated, who are protected against the serious impact of coronavirus infection, and the unvaccinated, who are not.

Here’s where things become curious. We know, do we not, that vaccinated people can still catch and transmit the virus, including from each other; yet the passport plan assumes they are terrified of encountering an unvaccinated person, particularly in the hospitality arena, when logic suggests it should be precisely the other way round. The plan further seems to assume “unvaccinated” means the same as “infected”, an even more preposterous notion.

Try as I might, I cannot see what the vaccinated have to fear from the unvaccinated. As I celebrate the protection of my double dose of AstraZeneca with a slap-up meal in a top restaurant, why should I worry about the people eating at the next table? I’m safe. Call me a monster, but I’ve never given a second’s consideration to the wellbeing of my fellow diners, sometimes even in my own home.

Perhaps we could meet somewhere in the middle. A section for the unvaccinated to one side of the restaurant, with its own door, where unvaccinated waiters serve food and drinks on your own special crockery with designated cutlery and glassware. It was a very popular arrangement in 1950s Alabama, I hear. It’s the culinary extension of “social distancing”. Staying apart keeps us together.

US admits strike in Kabul killed 10 civilians, not IS militants

A top general admitted the United States had made a “mistake” when it launched a drone strike against suspected Isl@mic State militants in Kabul, killing 10 civilians including children instead during the frenzied final days of the US pullout from Afghanistan last month.

The strike, a macabre coda to the 20-year US war in Afghanistan, was meant to target a suspected IS operation that US intelligence had “reasonable certainty” aimed to attack the Kabul airport, said US Central Command commander General Kenneth McKenzie.

“The strike was a tragic mistake,” McKenzie told reporters after an investigation.

US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin – wearing full PPE gear, Plexiglass Face Covering & Mask, apologised to the relatives of those killed in a statement.

US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin apologised to the relatives of those killed in a statement.

“We selected this car based on its movement at a known target area of interest to us,” McKenzie said.

“Clearly our intelligence was wrong on this particular white Toyota,” he said. The drone strike killed 10 people, including seven children, according to McKenzie, none of who ultimately were linked to IS.

Blinken deletes, replaces tweet vowing US will ‘stand with the people of Hong Kong’

Secretary of State Antony Blinken has deleted a tweet that seemingly criticized the Chinese government and showed support from the United States for the people of Hong Kong, instead opting to issue a less-forceful tweet in its place.

The original message, shared from Blinken’s Twitter account, read: “Beijing should let the voices of all Hong Kongers be heard. The PRC’s disqualification of district councillors only weakens Hong Kong’s long-term political and social stability. We stand with the people of Hong Kong & continue to support their human rights & fundamental freedoms.”

Following the deletion of the tweet, the same account later issued another tweet that read: “The PRC’s disqualification of seven pro-democracy district councillors undermines the ability of people in Hong Kong to participate in their governance. Governments should serve the people they represent. Decreasing representation goes against the spirit of Hong Kong’s Basic Law.”

The Novavax Vaccine Data, and Spike Proteins in General

      1. Novavax Clinical Data

Word came yesterday that Novavax had very good safety and efficacy in the trial of their recombinant protein vaccine. This is good news. By this point, the vaccine is much less needed here in the US, but it could be a very important part of getting many other countries vaccinated, due to its less demanding storage requirements and (relatively) straightforward production process. The company does intend to file for FDA approval, and is in the last stages of getting all of its manufacturing and quality control procedures ready for that. I hope that this opens up to worldwide usage of this one, and that the company really is ready for large-scale production.

As many readers are well aware, this is a recombinant protein vaccine, not a viral vector (like J&J or the Oxford/AZ vaccines), and not an mRNA one like Moderna or Pfizer/BioNTech. I also hope that this allays some of the worries that many people still have about those two platforms: recombinant protein vaccines have been around for longer, so this one would (presumably) be less of a concern for some potential users.

      2. Circulating Spike and S1 Proteins After Vaccination

Let’s talk about one of those concerns in particular. I am still getting question after question about the Spike protein being produced by the mRNA and viral-vector vaccines. Not a day goes by without someone contacting me about this issue, and recently these messages have taken on a slightly different tone. I last wrote about this issue here, and since then there have been other publications that bear on the topic. Here’s a key one: this paper describes the detection of the Spike protein in the bloodstream of patients who received the Moderna vaccine. Now, in that earlier blog post I spent several paragraphs going on about how the Spike protein (because of its transmembrane anchor) would not be floating around in the bloodstream, and you can be sure that many of my correspondents have reminded me of that. But see below for more details!

To be sure, the new paper uses a very sensitive assay to find the protein – Simoa, which is a single-molecule detection method. I’ll explain that one briefly for those who are interested; if you’re not, you can skip ahead and just stipulate that this is pretty much the gold standard for detecting very small amounts of protein in biological samples.

      2a: The Assay Technology
      2b: S1 and Spike Levels
      3. Circulating Spike and S1 Proteins During Coronavirus Infection

      4. Back to the Novavax Results

There is another line of argument to make. Remember, the Novavax vaccine does not cause cells to produce the Spike protein. It is the Spike protein, injected directly into a person’s body, along with an adjuvant to make the immune reaction that much more vigorous. It does not get cleaved to make S1 protein, because that cleavage site has been mutated to keep that from happening, but it does bind to human ACE2 receptors just like the wild-type protein. If such an injection were causing harm to patients, that would have set off a strong safety signal in the human trials, but no such problems have been seen. Not in the animal studies, not in first dose-finding studies in humans, not in the first efficacy trial, and not in the one whose results were just announced.

It seems clear from all these human trials and the clinical experience to date that the circulating levels of the S1 protein (or the Spike itself) that are sufficient to induce a protective immune response are not in themselves toxic. The animal studies demonstrate that the Spike or S1 can indeed have bad effects on living cells and tissues all by themselves, but the conditions under which this was demonstrated are not those that obtain after vaccination.

Jo keep up your good work and let’s hope their self inflicted energy crisis throws another big spanner in the machinery of this religious cult’s next meeting in Glasgow COP 26.

Meanwhile Antarctica is not helping their religious cult and the latest Zhu study has found that there has been significant cooling over the last 40 years.

And the Zhu slight warming at the Ant peninsula is disputed by the UK BAS Turner study that found cooling there since about 1998. Here’s the Zhu 2021 abstract and link.

    https://www.mdpi.com/2073-4433/12/2/217/htm

    “Abstract
“The European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) released its latest reanalysis dataset named ERA5 in 2017. To assess the performance of ERA5 in Antarctica, we compare the near-surface temperature data from ERA5 and ERA-Interim with the measured data from 41 weather stations. ERA5 has a strong linear relationship with monthly observations, and the statistical significant correlation coefficients (p < 0.05) are higher than 0.95 at all stations selected. The performance of ERA5 shows regional differences, and the correlations are high in West Antarctica and low in East Antarctica. Compared with ERA5, ERA-Interim has a slightly higher linear relationship with observations in the Antarctic Peninsula. ERA5 agrees well with the temperature observations in austral spring, with significant correlation coefficients higher than 0.90 and bias lower than 0.70 °C. The temperature trend from ERA5 is consistent with that from observations, in which a cooling trend dominates East Antarctica and West Antarctica, while a warming trend exists in the Antarctic Peninsula except during austral summer. Generally, ERA5 can effectively represent the temperature changes in Antarctica and its three subregions. Although ERA5 has bias, ERA5 can play an important role as a powerful tool to explore the climate change in Antarctica with sparse in situ observations."

    From the linked article:

“The Swedish COVID-19 experiment of not implementing early and strong measures to safeguard the population has been hotly debated around the world, but at this point we can predict it is almost certain to result in a net failure in terms of death and suffering. As of Oct. 13, Sweden’s per capita death rate is 58.4 per 100,000 people, according to Johns Hopkins University data, 12th highest in the world (not including tiny Andorra and San Marino).”

This was the consensus of the enlightened “science” community, which predicted that no lockdowns and no mask mandates would sentence tens of thousands of Swedes to death.

Sweden is currently 40th in Deaths in 100k.

Ozone hole larger than usual for this time of year.

‘According to the European Space Agency, last year’s hole was driven by a ‘strong, stable and cold polar vortex’ which consistently lowered the temperature of the ozone layer over Antarctica.

‘The evolution of this year’s ozone hole appears to be progressing along a similar track, with it presently being larger for this time of the season than 75 per cent of holes since 1979.’ (UK Mail)

    20

    • #

The reason is given in comment 30 .

The ozone hole is largely related to the extent of the cold over Antarctica . If Antarctica is Cooling then the ozone hole is likely to become larger. the effect of cfc’s on it was always debatable.

Indeed Cambridge university once confirmed to me that the ozone hole may have always existed but that we didn’t have the equipment prior to the 1950’s to measure it

The ozone hole is caused by CFCs … this is surely not another meal for deniers to snack on, is it?

Many people have heard that the ozone hole is caused by chemicals called CFCs, short for chlorofluorocarbons. CFCs escape into the atmosphere from refrigeration and propellant devices and processes. In the lower atmosphere, they are so stable that they persist for years, even decades.

This long lifetime allows some of the CFCs to eventually reach the stratosphere. In the stratosphere, ultraviolet light breaks the bond holding chlorine atoms (Cl) to the CFC molecule. A free chlorine atom goes on to participate in a series of chemical reactions that both destroy ozone and return the free chlorine atom to the atmosphere unchanged, where it can destroy more and more ozone molecules. For those who know the story of CFCs and ozone, that is the part of the tale that is probably familiar.

I’m asking readers to raise teh bar and post comments that have some evidence or are at least posed as speculation with the admission that there is none to post. I don’t think posting hyperbole and pure speculation is helping. I suspect even — that if I were the communists, globalists, or President Xi, there would be value in dividing the west (BLM-style hate between politicised groups). There would also be value in driving high risk older Republican voters to fear and say no to the vaccines (and without any realistic alternative to protect them.)

Some baseless hyperbole might be doing the work of the groups we normally oppose. Therefore we need more discipline in comments. (And this was not aimed at you Tony.)

“driving high risk older Republican voters to fear and say no to the vaccines (and without any realistic alternative to protect them.)”

Sorry if I misunderstand, but is ‘Republican voters’ a reference to America?

Forgive my ignorance, what is a Republican voter in the context of Australian politics?
Do you actually think that vax ‘hesitancy’, as is it laughably called in the press here in America, is an opinion of only “Republican voters”?

In the US, there is a high unvaccinated rate among African Americans, and they are overwhelmingly Democrats.

          “Hyperbole and pure speculation”?

‘Depopulation’ is a despicable conspiracy theory, as we know that no government in history has ever attempted such an uncivilized thing.

And certainly, no individual of prominence and good standing, has ever even suggested it.

Sorry if my comments are undisciplined, I am an older Republican voter, so there ya go.
And after a lifetime of being a Democrat.
I’m just a victim of misinformation.

Only ‘conspiracy theorists’ would mention such facts.

            Hello John R Smith,
            I will answer your questions

In Australia, Republicans would be called Conservatives and vote Liberal .

Democrats would still be lefty’s and vote Labor.

However our equivalent to “the Squad”. would be the Greens . They identify as caring for the planet but are hard core Marxists.

We also have people like your RINOS in the Liberal Party.

And we have a small eclectic mix of independents .

Our government is pushing the community to exclude people who have chosen not to accept the vaccine and is ratcheting up the fear factor. Some people have become irrational and wishing all sorts of harm on the unvaccinated .

Jo says, “ There would also be value in driving high risk older Republican voters to fear and say no to the vaccines (and without any realistic alternative to protect them.”

There are many many alternatives to experimental failed vaccines. You just did a post on Ivermectin and India.

The smear on Ivermectin is done. Uttar Pradesh used a very effective distribution method. They did contact tracing and gave, not only the patient, but their entire family and other contacts, Ivermectin. Lockdowns in India were a big problem. What happens when you restrict a very dense population to crowded indoor locations, and dozens often shared a single restroom? ( far worse then the official numbers )

They could not test to the extent of the US, so they focused on 1case, 2contacts, 3 Ivermectin. They broke the RO of the Virus way below one. Due to their focused testing the peak positive rate was almost 20 percent. Currently most states in the providence of Uttar Pradesh had zero positive. In 226,000 targeted tests, they had a positive rate of .01 percent. They crushed it.

A word of note about the India cases. There is fairly strong evidence, excess deaths and large group cremations, that Covid cases and deaths were considerably higher then the official records. After much reading, and checking with charity groups that I work with there, I think it likely that deaths were three to four times the official numbers. The excess deaths were higher, but so many distribution items and essentials broke down with lockdowns. Starvation or severe malnutrition and lack of care led to extensive health breakdowns and many deaths.

And while natural immunity is a factor, it is not nearly the factor one may think. The reason is India’s incredible population density. It is estimated that about fifty to sixty percent eventually acquired natural immunity. At 50 percent India’s remaining population density is still 18 times Australia and about 3.5 times the US. That is still a lot of fuel.

No, you asked for some overall comparison with other states in India that did not use Ivermectin. Here is a fairly extensive link. It takes about an hour to begin to grasp the extent of it, yet it all overwhelmingly supports Ivermectin.

Regarding Hyperbole and speculation.Vaccine harm is neither. Eugenics is neither. Bill Gates and many from WHO are Eugenics supporters. Bill Gates is the prominent spokesmen for the vaccines. The 100 years of the last century saw at least 140 million citizens murdered by their own government! ( not hyperbole) It would be naive and foolish to think “it can’t happen again”. The evidence that Covid is a man made gain of function virus is very strong. The USA, my nation, helped develop and fund it with China finishing the project. If someone says plandemic, they may be very right

VARES and the other adverse event reporting agencies exist for a reason! And that reason is NOT to be dismissed with tautology- “ Correlation is not necessarily causation, anybody can report an adverse event”. Yes, a 100 percent true generalization completely dismissing these professional agencies, and completely ignorant of how they actually work. Also completely ignorant of the Harvard study that suggested only one to ten percent of adverse events get recorded. That study is not hyperbole either.

The vast majority of adverse events are reported by medical professionals. It is an evolved process most patients don’t have the information required to even fill it out.
I will give three links in this post to vaccine harms. Each link supports the other two. I could twenty or more. The first link is Doctor Ryan Cole, who is eminently professionally qualified as an expert in this field. ( BTW, fir any to speak up is to risk their career). Watch the video, follow his articulate talk, and feel the sincerity in his words.

When I heard Dr Cole’s talk, I thought, If so they will have trouble hiding this. Well they have tried, but are in the process of failing. The next link (2) supports Dr Cole. A NSM affiliate asked for stories about the unvaccinated suffering from Covid and the pain it caused. ( More main stream attempt to divide fellow humans). Instead they were overwhelmed with people telling their anguished stories of vaccine harms, either themselves or their families. It was an unorganized grass roots response, deeply supporting what Dr Cole articulates.

Link number 3 strongly supports the VARES Harvard study, and demonstrates
confirms Dr Cole’s large uptick in severe “other” disease as a result of vaccination.
It explains the continued, post vaccine roll out time period, excess deaths not associated with Covid. (They are mostly if not all vaccine related)

It very clearly and believably explains why adverse events are extremely underreported.

It demonstrates in a logical believable manner why double vaccinated Covid patients are under reported, and even counted as unvaccinated Covid patients.

We get to see “toe the company line” policy in action. ( don’t know how some people live with themselves.) The company calling the shots for the hospitals is clearly the CDC.

She will lose her job very soon. They are intending to fire her as a “ voluntary resignation “ She won’t let them do that.

The interviewer says we have many such whistleblower reports, but very few are willing to come into the open. (He does a good job)

    Vaccination Macht Frei

We’re told Hydroxychloroquine is poison, don’t you know,
    But used for over fifty years and nary a death to show;

But in a sense they’re right to call it poison, and here’s why:
Hydroxychloroquine used early kills the Covid lie.

And when used with Ivermectin – yet another safe cheap drug,
We wouldn’t need to vaccinate to end the Covid bug.

The fact that governments around the world want both drugs banned,
Reveals the sorry truth about the future they have planned:

Since the “vaccines” in production will not stop the virus spread,
The lockdowns will continue until Capitalism is dead.

And when it’s dead the people will no longer have a choice,
They’ll be living under communism, slaves without a voice.

The Turner study of the Antarctic peninsula has found significant cooling over the 21st century. Here’s the NATURE link and the abstract summary.

    https://www.nature.com/articles/nature18645
    “Abstract”

“Since the 1950s, research stations on the Antarctic Peninsula have recorded some of the largest increases in near-surface air temperature in the Southern Hemisphere1. This warming has contributed to the regional retreat of glaciers2, disintegration of floating ice shelves3 and a ‘greening’ through the expansion in range of various flora4. Several interlinked processes have been suggested as contributing to the warming, including stratospheric ozone depletion5, local sea-ice loss6, an increase in westerly winds5,7, and changes in the strength and location of low–high-latitude atmospheric teleconnections8,9. Here we use a stacked temperature record to show an absence of regional warming since the late 1990s. The annual mean temperature has decreased at a statistically significant rate, with the most rapid cooling during the Austral summer. Temperatures have decreased as a consequence of a greater frequency of cold, east-to-southeasterly winds, resulting from more cyclonic conditions in the northern Weddell Sea associated with a strengthening mid-latitude jet. These circulation changes have also increased the advection of sea ice towards the east coast of the peninsula, amplifying their effects. Our findings cover only 1% of the Antarctic continent and emphasize that decadal temperature changes in this region are not primarily associated with the drivers of global temperature change but, rather, reflect the extreme natural internal variability of the regional atmospheric circulation”.

China’s Hottest New Rental Service: Men Who Actually Listen

Chinese women are fed up with dating self-absorbed men. Now, “butler cafés” are offering them more attentive male company — for a fee.

SHANGHAI — At 40 years old, Zheng says she’s tired of searching for the perfect man. So she’s decided to hire one instead.

Whenever she feels like some male company, the divorcée heads to a café in central Shanghai named The Promised Land. There, she spends hours being pampered by a handsome young server, who fetches her drinks, watches movies with her, and listens attentively to her anecdotes.

The sessions cost over 400 yuan ($60) each time, but Zheng says they’re worth every cent.

“The butlers respect me and care about my feelings,” she tells Sixth Tone. “Even if you have a boyfriend, he might not be this sweet, right?”

Zheng’s favorite hangout is a “butler café” — a new concept that’s generating enormous buzz on Chinese social media by offering women the kind of male attention they desire.

Originally from Japan, butler cafés allow customers to spend time with a team of dashing young waiters for an hourly fee. They’re a counterpart to the more mainstream “maid cafés,” which feature waitresses dressed in maid costumes serving a primarily male clientele.

Why are so many young childless men getting the snip?

Dr Justin Low has seen the fear in a man’s eyes countless times. He’s watched grown men weep. Yet vasectomies for young childless men are rising steeply. Why?

Dr Justin Low has seen the fear in a man’s eyes countless times. He’s watched grown men weep and had a few leap off his operating table and run into the streets, half naked and entirely shoeless.

It takes a lot to rattle “The Ball Whisperer”, as one of Australia’s most prolific vasectomists is known, yet he remembers being utterly taken aback the first time a young, childless man walked into his office and asked for the snip. “It was a shock. I do remember how I felt the first time a guy with no kids came to me, and it put me on the back foot,” Low recalls, still recoiling slightly. “I wasn’t prepared for it, I mean, not just as a doctor but as a lay person, there’s just this funny thing we’re brought up to think, doesn’t everyone want kids?”

Back when he started out a decade ago, his job was very much about helping men who felt they’d had enough children, or possibly more than enough. But after that first childless man, there were a few more, then a lot, and today Low, whose Sydney clinic does about 50 procedures a week, says it’s not unusual for between a third and a half of his patients on any given day to be childless. And they’re getting younger; so many are in their twenties that his organisation now offers compulsory counselling to any childless man under the age of 30 who inquires about a vasectomy.

The childless patients in Low’s clinic fall largely into two unusual groups. First, there are the men who might be described as displaying an inverse biological imperative, or a deep certainty that they never want to be a father. “Then there are the ones who say to me: ‘I just don’t want to bring children into a world like this,’ ” he says. “It’s about sustainability for them, it’s about climate change and the future of the planet, and if anything, Covid-19 and the pandemic has only reinforced that feeling, that dread, and we’ve had more and more guys coming in talking about that.

Refrigerator blindness: selective loss of visual acuity in association with a common foraging behaviour

The Case: Three male offspring, aged 9–14 years, of one of the authors (M.B.)

were observed to experience visual problems profound enough to imply functional blindness. The visual deficit was evident on almost every occasion when any one of the children of this physician went to the refrigerator and opened the door. The acute visual problem encountered was noted to be part of a consistent behaviour pattern, wherein a few seconds after the fridge door was opened a cry would be heard from the affected child of “Mum, where’s the milk [or any other item being sought]?” This vocalization was made without regard to the physician’s distance from the fridge or engagement in any other activity. Shouted directions as to the location of the object only occasionally led to it becoming visible. Even with calm and constructive maternal encouragement and direction the desired object typically would remain unseen until the mother-physician attended the fridge-side and physically identified the precise location of the item.

This behaviour was noted only sporadically among the female members of the household, but was unremitting among the males. Attempts at patient empowerment through counselling — “Surely someone of your age can find the …” — rarely led to success, and diagnostic accusations such as “Are you blind?” appeared to aggravate the condition, possibly through subliminal trauma to the fragile male psyche.

A literature review using the search terms “blindness,” “sightlessness,” “loss of sight,” “refrigerator,” “Frigidaire” and “hereditary difficulty” for the years 1994–2004 yielded no case reports or genome-mapping references to refrigerator/fridge blindness in children or adults. We believe therefore that we report a previously undescribed condition.

Mea Culpa – perfectly describes myself – I can now advise my Wife why I bleat “Darling – where’s the milk [or any other item being sought]?”

The French terms for refrigerator blindness — aveuglement réfrigérateur (m) or cécité glacière (f) — suggest a visual disturbance caused by light reflecting off snow and ice. The brilliant white finish, shiny stainless steel and high-intensity lighting in modern fridges could well be contributing factors, bearing in mind that this condition is newly recognized even though refrigeration technology is now a century or more old. However, unlike in snow blindness, the condition is painless (except in the parent) and the loss of the visual field is selective, being limited to the contents of the refrigerator. It is true that many of those affected have visual difficulty with other items (e.g., not seeing a mess in their rooms, discarded clothing or dirty dishes), but these symptoms are readily explained by the influence of the primitive streak still so evident in most males, driving them to recreate an environment agreeable to them as cave-dwellers.

Sadly, there is a more sinister potential cause. An electromagnetic field is emitted by any electrical device and this causes electromagnetic interference (EMI), as we are all aware from restrictions imposed on cell phone use in hospitals2 and broader restrictions on aircraft. Moreover, cell phone use has been linked to concerns regarding disordered brain function and even structural pathology. When standing close to an open fridge, a child will be engulfed by the fridge’s magnetic field and remains within in it for the entire duration of the “blindness” they experience. Modern fridges are larger and more powerful than older models, and some even incorporate communication technology increasing the potential for EMI,3 and thus, particularly when associated with low-amplitude vibration, could well exert an effect on sympathetic tone, signal processing or blood flow within the brain.4

Implications for parenting and clinical practice:

Pending further study, we hypothesize that parental advocacy that limits children’s access to refrigerators, particularly for all young males, is important. It would have the benefit of decreasing the incidence of stress-related illness among parents by containing the current epidemic of refrigerator blindness, and represents a potentially effective means of slowing the alarming trend of obesity currently evident among our children. To not do this would be evidence of another form of blindness, this time among parents and health care professionals.

St John — in medicine, unlike engineering, almost nothing is 100%. Things improve the odds.

Stacking things that work on top of each other is called the Swiss Cheese Model. Each layer lets through a few viruses but enough layers will make a difference.

But yes, underneath the advertising for vaccines there is a huge incongruency. If the vaccines give good protection why are the vaccinated so afraid of the unvaccinated.

      132

That’s the question of the century, Jo.

My guess is that it is because the government “marketing” job for the vaccines has been just so successful. People are very, very afraid of this virus. For this reason, unvaccinated are perceived as dangerous to the vaccinated. Its tragic because it is just so emotive and unjustifiable. Friends and even family are shunning and abusive to those who have thought long and hard about vaccination.

Using a racing analogy – the horse called “Fear” is a very good bet to win the race. But, as Paul Keating once said, I wouldn’t bet against that nag “Self-Interest” either. And that very good chance “Ivermectin”? It was disqualified by the stewards before it even got to the barrier!

” … why are the vaccinated so afraid of the unvaccinated.”

Perhaps it’s like the situation with the masks – it’s not so much that mask-wearers are afraid of the unmasked, otherwise they would move away from them rather than draw near and poke a finger in their chest while berating them.

What bothers people like the maskholes is that you have not CONFORMED to the ORDERS.

And so perhaps the vaxxed are saying – “How come you resisted or escaped the propaganda that drove me to get vaxxed?”

Stacking things that work on top of each other is called the Swiss Cheese Model.

        Thanks Jo,

The Swiss Cheese Model is usually invoked to explain the occasional failures in medical procedure protocols (such as operating on the wrong limb).

It is interesting that you raise it in a treatment protocol as a positive way of improving the treatment outcomes.
I am encouraged to increase my armory of anti Covid medications. That now includes Curcumin and Melatonin (for early treatment).

1 to 8 because they are only partially effective, question 9 I have no idea, unless its scare mongering to pressure people into vaccines.

      9. If fully vaccinated people can get and transmit covid why give them the vaccine passports and privileges?

The delta variant is highly contagious. It has been assessed as having an R0 of 4 in a population of normal mobility. That means the population needs to have greater than 80% carrying antibodies to get the infection rate UNDER 1 to starve the virus out of existence.

With vaccines approved for 12yo and over, more than 80% of those over 12 need to have antibodies to get the infection rate under 1. There is every prospect that Australia will achieve that because the vaccination uptake in the older age groups, where it has been on offer for the longest time, is over 90%:
      https://www.health.gov.au/sites/default/files/documents/2021/09/covid-19-vaccination-doses-by-age-and-sex_12.pdf

But until there is some confidence that the younger age group will be as community minded as the older age groups remains to be seen. The privileges afforded to vaccinated people should act as encouragement and incentive – no doubt some will view it as coercion.

However if fewer than 80% of the population get vaccinated then the only way to make up for the shortfall is to restrain mobility or allow enough people to get the virus so they develop herd immunity. Somewhere around 10% of unvaccinated people end up in hospital. 10% of 20% of The Australian population is 480k people. That would be the extreme case because herd immunity should kick in to lower numbers.

If I was building a plan out, I would base it on case numbers linked to hospitalisations and forecast dates rather than set dates. NSW already has declining daily cases and hospital load is not climbing alarmingly. The forecast is for hospitalisation in Australia to peak by the end of September.

Other countries have managed their way out of lockdowns by balancing vaccinations and mobility. The last thing needed is to declare “Freedom Day”. Just keep putting jabs in arms and gradually increase mobility.

The good news is that globally the infection rate is under 1 with mobility only 7% down on pre-Covid level.

By end of November Covid should be looking under control.

We need a rational treatment policy including all the potentially useful antivirals to be given to households as prophylaxis.

Antivaxxers have legitimate concerns. I hope we never get to 80% vaccination rate.

        Other strategies must be tried.

Privileges? What privileges would those be? There is no carrot, only stick.

I’m no judge of the information’s quality but I tired of the presentation after twenty minutes of detail excruciatingly extracted from a welter of bar graphs with a bewildering lack of focus. As we were told in school “more light and less heat please”. Maybe the next two hours or more is better; it’s not likely I’ll go back and check.

It is clear where this is heading. No jab, no phone. Soon, cash will be gone and it will be all EFT – the catch being your account will freeze unless you’re jabbed. Want to turn on your car ignition – just use the ‘start my car’ QR code on your iphone, available only of course for those with up-to-date jab status.

What utter nonsense – it is the loopy right that promotes all the hi-tech surveillance stuff. From Scotty from Marketing here, through to Boris and the others.

You can’t pin all the deep state spy stuff on the left – they have been rebelling against it for decades. We also remember Kent State. We don’t fall for your blatant re-write comrade!

China calls for ‘combat readiness’ after AUKUS submarine purchase
China is feeling the pressure after our sub announcement, and has warned Australia that it has made itself the “target of a nuclear strike”.

China’s leader Xi Jinping has renewed his calls for “combat readiness” as his troll-diplomats label Australia a “threat to regional stability”. Meanwhile, Chinese ships are forcing their way into Japanese and Indonesian waters – again.

    Saturday night at the movies.

It’s been a few weeks and it has been Slim Pickins but I have something for you.

    Two Graham Kennedy movies:

The Odd Angry Shot. Few seeds on PirateBay but I’ll stay online

Don’s Party. No seeds when I looked but on YT.

But it wouldn’t be me without something from WAY left field, also on YT.

Dangerous Davies – The Last Detective (1981)
