A post written and edited by Rafe Champion
Note from Jo: This is a change from the last 5,000 posts. Rafe has written and edited this entirely a guest. Given the dearth of independent blogs in Australia since the end of Catallaxy, it seems an experiment worth trying.
Introducing myself. Jo has taken me on board as an occasional contributor after the old Catallaxy Files closed down and I was homeless. Due to the break I have not got back into the routine of posting four or five times a week on a wide range of topics and I am now spending more time wind-watching with the Energy Realists of Australia. You can see how we are taking on the renewable energy farce here. My thoughts on other issues can be found on my personal website.
Back to the topic.
Why are supposedly quality journalists so misguided on climate change?
Paul Kelly and Greg Sheridan have clearly taken on board the alarmist global warming narrative. To explain the context for overseas readers, Kelly and Sheridan are very senior and respected journalists on The Australian, the one national daily that Rupert Murdoch established in 1964. That paper along with a handful of other metropolitan dailies represented the quality journalism in the country. The Australian maintained that reputation longer than several others but the situation had changed since the woke offspring of Rupert Murdoch have assumed more control.
Never mind the performance of the hacks, what has gone wrong at the top of the profession and the once-were reputable newspapers?
Global warming and the reduction of CO2 emissions will probably be seen as the signature issue of public policy at the start of the third Millennium alongside the emerging role of China.
In this situation it behooves journalists who have access to a large readership among the educated public to obtain the best grasp of the issues that they can manage, given their training and their capabilities.
This does not mean that they have to become experts in the field or make it a major focus of their output, given that their briefs are wide-ranging.
In view of their reach and their potential impact on public opinion they had better take care that the opinions that they express on signature issues are carefully considered and offered with a warning when they are operating outside their areas of competence.
Area of competence are those where they have engaged with experts in the field over a long time to become familiar with the complexities and nuances of the subject matter. In these areas they will be clear about the differences of opinion that are held by professionals and experts in the field and if they are not experts themselves they had better not commit to one side or the other.
Warming emerged as an issue during the 1990s and it became a matter of significant concern after the turn of the century. This means that journalists have had two decades to do their homework on the topic. During this time they should have discovered the very wide gap between the views that the mainstream media have made into the dominant narrative and the views offered by a small galaxy of climate science stars who are flatly opposed to alarmism.
Responsible commentators should have discovered this situation and told their readers about it. They could also be expected to read enough of the more accessible literature and talked to enough well-informed people to realise how the field has been invaded by politics. They should know how alarmism is driven by various interest groups inside and outside the climate science community.
Kelly and Sheridan are pre-eminently political commentators and of all people they should be alert to the political currents that drive public debates on controversial issues.
As for coming to grips with the issue, we are talking about two decades or more. Warming did not emerge in the last year two years like the pandemic where working journalist can be allowed more time to come to grips with the science and the conflicting opinions among the people who are supposed to be the experts.
UPDATE from Jo:
Given that the Big Bankers can bully a nation of 25 million people into accepting “Net Zero” targets that they voted against, the question becomes, Who can’t they bully? Think about that…
Jo,
Suggestion. Give these journalists the names of some nearby scientists who have proper scientific understanding. Geoff s

“As for coming to grips with the issue, we are talking about two decades or more.”
For some people, it should be four decades or more.
110
We have 75 scientists who don’t believe in the climate emergency meme, but Kelly and Sheridan won’t bother talking to any of them.
https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-02-27/who-are–scientists-professionals-who-say-no-climate-emergency/11734966?nw=0&r=HtmlFragment

Thanks for the suggestions. Can I just point out, that I didn’t write this article. (I’m about to read it for the first time).
So all the comments addressed to me below should really say “Rafe”. I realize this is a rare change. After 4796 posts which I read, edited and published, this is a trial of a different kind.
Rafe has a history of publishing articles on the Australian Catallaxy site for years. I was a bit mortified when that whole site disappeared!
380
you should be editing something that comes under your name no? Your fault if he defames anyone.

“Rafe has written and edited this entirely a guest. ”
Please read more carefully !

Web sites can be liable for the comments users make even though they’re clearly made by the user and not the site owner. I would think Jo risks the same here with our comments (probably one of the reasons they’re moderated, as well as for playing nicely with each other) and for publishing a guests article. Regardless of it being clearly stated who wrote it.
Primary responsibility lies with the author, the editor, and the entity responsible for the publication.
Additionaly, the High Court ruled on a case reinforcing that media publishers are liable for defamatory third party comments posted on their social media pages.
10
Isn’t that the loophole that Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, etc all get away with? They can declare themselves NOT to be publishers, while at the same time editing “in good faith” where they feel appropriate.
That’s USA law of course … which applies in Australia for those corporations where the US has given the Aus government a nudge-nudge and suggested it ought to apply. Good luck seeing any of those big guys held responsible.
30
Yes Strop there is a risk and Tel, don’t you think it would be wise to clarify first?
05
Yes Tel, those platforms do seem to escape responsibility. The High Court decision here related to entities using those platforms and having comments turned on.
I agree with the principle that facebook etc should be regarded as a platform and responsibility is with the user / users. Just like I don’t think an ISP is responsible for content or that Reflex is responsible for the content of what gets printed on the paper they make.
But, as you’re aluding to. Facebook etc are now taking it on themselves to edit content which should disqualify them from being immune to the publisher regulations.
Regardless of what those companies can and can’t get away with, entities with blogs like this probably can’t. Even if they can, they probably can’t afford the legal costs of trying to prove they can.

A very studious (sarc) “fact check” article by the ABC. From the start you could tell it’s biased direction trying to poo-poo our most worthy scientists, right through to the end where it had the last word:
“The claims contradict or misrepresent the evidence uncovered by geoscientists, failing to provide support for its conclusions downplaying the threat of climate change. The letter claims, for example, that climate models ignore the benefits of increased CO2on plant growth. This is false, as many climate models simulate the response of vegetation to increased CO2— and the climate change it causes.”

Journalists (if they are fit to be called that today) are professional onlookers, if not accessories. They print what they are fed. And they are fed by the reciprocating influence machine that is in place, a deep rooted corruption of science and academia:
https://youtu.be/octL8cOcQFE at mark 18:42
Concerning climate change (or whatever it happens to be called at any given moment), it’s now a Dead Duck. The truth is out. It’s just a matter of time before even the influence machine can no longer deny it with a straight face.

Pail Kelly is 73. Greg Sheridan in 65.
I cannot see the circumstances where these reporters will be on the wrong side of history in their working careers.
Andrew Bolt and Peta Credlin are more recent vintage and both have maintained their course on the climate religion. Terry McCrann is well recognised in Victoria but he is the same age as Paul Kelly.
There was a list of the most important federal election issues in the Herald Sun today. It is based on a News Corp survey:
https://www.townsvillebulletin.com.au/news/national/ten-most-important-issues-for-aussie-voters/video/7295aa8bef17f4f9a104eb4422edc1c4
#6 could be viewed as climate related but it was to do with protecting the environment.
The Federal election is before May 2022. I cannot see Albo changing his image in time to topple the LNP.
Dan’s ALP still has a 10% lead in Victoria. He goes to the polls at the end of next year.
712
Issue No 10 was “Lowering the cost of Energy”.
Readers here would see that as a Climate issue although many of the general public might not.
Albo may not be able to topple the LNP but UAP might be able to. At the last election the UAP did not win any seats but delivered a victory to the LNP. Next election LNP sitting members will be targeted. A minority Labor Government would be a better outcome than allowing the present LNP parliamentarians to continue.
The bar might not be that high. PHON has 2 senators at present. I think Pauline Hanson is up for election but she should get back in. IF the UAP only scored 2 senate seats across the country, that could be enough to tie up the senate. Half a dozen lower house seats would be like a dream come true.
230
We had a “minority Labor” government. It wasn’t better.
31
You don’t know what the alternative was.
00
PC
Minority governments such as the unlamented Gillard/Brown mess are by far the worst around the world. They are arbitrary, unpredictable, and generally corrupt. They allow changes of policy with nothing but “They made me do it.”
80
The Townsville Bulletin link seems to just have a video running through the top 10. The Herald Sun had some written commentary. Couple of paragraphs below relating to climate.
10
A very pertinent article Jo. As you say, these senior journalists seem to have their fields of expertise and have exhausted their intellectual curiosity on them. In my experience I have found many people who I admire remain quite ignorant on climate-change and have little intellectual ammunition . Quite amazing really.
340
Then I read a piece by Greg Craven of ACU who exemplifies what I’m talking about. Couldn’t bother to inform himself and a rather poor article anyway.
111
Some journalists, such as Greg Sheridan it seems, thrive in the cut and thrust of political intrigue but, when issues need to be explored and thought through, struggle. From memory, Sheridan couldn’t get his head around the appeal of Trump. If it doesn’t fit into the mainstream paradigms, then it’s either too much hard work or intellectually beyond him.
130
Jo, I don’t doubt that the two you named are misguided on climate change but an example or two would help.
80
Read Kelly’s articles in the Australian. He is a born again climate worrier.
360
And you can clearly tell when your climate-skeptic comments always get censored from his articles.
This is the very reason I ceased my subscription to the Australian. The narrative cannot be challenged.
Papers are now filled with old hacks who are eking out their time or brainwashed young-uns.
They are on a death spiral to irrelevancy …
390
I suppose that is the failing ( my judgment) of Kelly and Sheridan- not that they’re Irish, but are innately conservative and go along with the mainstream when the political winds blow a certain way. A pragmatic or objective sense of enquiry is not required because the times are such.
160
Yes Russell, I am constantly getting my comments on climate and Covid rejected by the Australian. Even quoting recognised medical authorities on adverse effects of mRNA vaccines gets rejected, even if quoting directly. And comments on climate have to be very carefully worded to avoid being spiked. I still subscribe as it is still the best source of printed news from more than one perspective, but it is frustrating that comments that contain no vitriol or sarcasm often do not make it to print.
30
I went to the Australian’s web site and clicked on a Paul Kelly article. The web site then demanded payment which I was not inclined to make. That was what I suspected when I suggested to Jo that a few examples would help.
And I repeat that I don’t doubt anything Jo says about them.
180
Chris Kenny is the only contributor at the Australian that takes a sensible line – Lloyd is a fence sitter and Credlin doesn’t make waves and that is Ok because she makes up for it on other matters. It is now fixed editorial policy now for action on climate-change so I pulled my online and buy only the weekend print.
160
A couple of recent articles:
If Glasgow climate summit was about saving the world, it failed PAUL KELLY
“Climate rhetoric has become insufferable and surely futile but will only be extended.”
Biden and Xi, not Morrison, will make Glasgow climate summit a failure GREG SHERIDAN
“COP26 in Glasgow will fail, in its own terms. It will not reach binding agreements that will guarantee that the world’s temperature does not rise beyond 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial times.”
Didn’t find anything suggesting they have bought into the climate religion.
120
Your penultimate sentence ie a corker. Read it again.
I, too, took some relief in that reporting. It is only in the last couple of months that they have rolled over to the AGW side. I see there a sign that they might be looking for a reason to roll back.
We need to keep in mind that there are two aspects of AGW. The science, which is bogus, and the business, which is becoming massive. How did it get so massive?
At the 2013 election we gave the Abbott government a landslide mandate to abolish the AGW scam and to slash the Rudd/Gillard/Rudd government’s reckless spending program, only to find that Clive Palmer, who had persuaded some of us by campaigning as to the “right” of the conservatives to give him the balance of power in the senate, had been in his turn persuaded by AL Gore to “protect” the destructive policies of “The Left” in our ALP and Greens. Clive Palmer’s PUP, after forming an association with AL Gore, thoroughly thwarted Abbott’s landslide mandate on both issues.
In 2014 the AGW scam was not getting much traction around the world. Had Tony Abbott been able to quash it as mandated, it would never have got off the ground.
As things turned out, we didn’t get an Abbottt government. We got a Gore goernment. One day, when our historians wake up from their slumbers, they will notice this, and record it as one of the most significant political events in our nation’s history.
270
Thanks for the reminder as to the behaviour of Palmer Ted!

Yes I see that. Did it always say that?

No it did not.
The first iteration seemed to come from Jo.
It has been amended to a guest post from Rafe Champion.
Still as good.

It did from when I first saw it.

Is it not clear that the Fourth Estate is a corrupt failure?
Or a successful mouthpiece for the lies of the Power Elite.
I’m not sure which.
I am a failed musician and lockdown crushed sports trainer, that only graduated 15th grade.
When I began to educate myself about climate 6 or 7 years ago, it only took a few days to realize something was wrong with the narrative I was being fed by the likes of the Washington Post and the NYT.
So for me they have no excuse.
Where is ‘Journalism’?
Bought off.
Hiding from the Inquisition.
Or happily composing or recycling lies for profit and praise.
Sometimes I think the plan of the Globalists is to eliminate scrutiny by destroying the integrity of the press.
It’s working.
381
“When I began to educate myself about climate 6 or 7 years ago, . . .”
I got a broadband (DSL) connection in September of 2008. The following paper was one of the first things I read. It was 4 months old.
https://climateaudit.files.wordpress.com/2005/09/ohioshort.pdf
Stephen McIntyre and several others provided increasing critical analysis for a number of years, but they became less noticeable on the web as the politicization of the topic increased. The material is still available if one wants an education. McIntyre’s site, Climate Audit (CA), is often more technical than some of us are capable of. It is still very useful. Jo has CA as one of her links; scroll down – on the right.

I tried to read Gavin Schmidt’s blog … ugh.
What a pill.
Found my way to Judith Curry.
And was saved.
Science of Doom a bit.
Really like Jo.
The science is important but unfortunately the real battle is political and cultural.
The redoubts of sanity on this subject are as dispersed and fortuitous to find as a good caravanserai on the Silk Road.

Climate change, Trump derangement syndrome, CRT, BLM, Antifa, Biden, Rittenhouse-hate, Sandmann-hate:
I once thought the world was a sophisticated place. Instead it is just a battle with morons, psychopaths, and their paid affiliates.
280
Maybe you need to dig a little deeper?
Maybe the whole setup is evolutionary?
As much as I hate the current agenda, maybe this is the process by which we grow stronger. Could this be preferential to sitting in a well ordered world, effectively a mono-culture where everything is done correctly.
Sometimes Morons and psychopaths battling bring necessary change. We just need to stop funding them out of the public purse.
30
You rightly connect those things.
Spike proteins on the same engineered virus?
Tracing back to the lab and the engineers is of great curiosity to me.
The pieces fit too well and seem to have a international central coordination.
A creator(s).
The Sandman incident is an obvious example.
Forget the AMOC, this stuff has true Stadium Wave attributes.
I suspect AI in the control of the morons.
And in the recruitment of the psychopaths.
Social media has been weaponized to intimidate opposition.
Which could be at the crux of this post.
And then there’s Dan.
His mere gaze incites havoc.
Did he rise from the sea?
Have all high tensions wires been stomped to the ground in Victoria?
Tanks melted with his breath?
Clear example of the folly of men.
Just having some fun.
11
Imagine passport photos (or mug shots) of Dan and Godzilla.
Side by side.
Come on.
Please.
31
Mod …
Just a little joke.
Just rearrange the ears … tell me I’m wrong!

Imagine passport photos (or mug shots) of Dan and Godzilla – Side by side.
How would you tell the difference?

A Plimer presentation at WASM Kalgoorlie showed me the depth and cost of the climate scam – Green death for Xmas!. ABC used to be good but like all news outlets they have been subjugated and brainwashed into propaganda outfits for china. They just think they are free 😉 The only real news is by subscription.
Currently subscribing to Avi Yemini, Alex Berenson from Unreported Truths for covid protection (The real Fauci by Kennedy is on the to purchase booklist) and Foxtel – Outsiders, Credlin etc are good, but increasingly hamstrung by the google ban incident. I also use Fox to record the US news outlets. Tucker Carlson is a young Alan Jones with Tony Abbot like analysis. It is good to follow the US because they really analyze the swamp of public servants running up the credit bill on our taxes, something our media stupidly protects. When Trump was in power CNN was top, now Biden is in power they are pretty much ignored… meanwhile the next gen watch Tik tok for fun because TV news is so nasty – me thinks the old wise ones have dug their own graves already and they know it.
10
The Fourth Estate, so essential to any sturdy democracy, is now our weakest link.
Lazy, ignorant, activist, corrupt, and otherwise uncaring journalism, has left the electorate dumbed down and vulnerable.
Climate change as an issue might run for decades more but truth and reality will ultimately come to bear. It should never have come to this.
10
Morning Jo,
Many of the “Canberra-Bubble” (to use a semi-dated “PM-termer”) seem to have thrown up the white flag on the Global-Climate-Change-Cult aka. Green Blob, along with these 2 formerly-respected journalists.
The last 5-10 years geo-politically have been very dynamic and picking an exact time this started or dramatically worsened is very hard.
But I’m going to offer you this as a very good place to start.
I’ve stopped watching lame-stream media virtually “cold turkey” since these 2 political seismic shifts occurred.
Since Chief Justice Thomas of the US. Supreme Court was overheard screaming at colleagues &/or staff that they can’t possibly admit to hearing any election cases due to risk of public unrest, and the cyclops-esque coverage of the Jan.6 protest (& aftermath).
In support of my above views, note how soon after these events Treasurer Josh Fridenberg did his “180” on the whole issue.
Warm regards, reformed warmist of Logan.
PS. To para-phrase Dan Bongino, the faster the Left’s agenda shows its effects, the sooner their vote will totally implode!
250
The Chief Justice of the US Supreme Court is John Roberts, friend of Jeffery Epstein. Clarence Thomas is an African American conservative judge. Senator Joseph Biden strongly attacked Justice Thomas in his nomination to the Supreme Court.
131
Hi Len,
Thanks for the clarification.
Regards, Lindsay.
60
Len. Remember the whistleblower that seems to have disappeared but was never denied.
That was a person sitting outside the door as the Supreme Court justices were being harangued by Justice Roberts as to why they should not take on the Republican accusations that the voting for the last election was fraudulent. Robert’s point was, did the justices want the Supreme Court hearing the case and precipitating widespread community disruptions regardless of what decision they made ie the matter of ‘simply the law’ was subordinated to the other matter of conjecture.
Justice Thomas was reported to say: ‘If we do this – refuse to hear the case on those grounds – then democracy as we know it in the USA is dead!’ (Paraphrasing in both cases, but the meaning is as is) Sadly, courage seems to be lacking in all the places the Western Democracies need it most.
We have seen similar backdowns on defending our freedoms by both Tony Abbott and Morrison in this country after a same time we had the head of the Human Rights Commission declaring how sad she was that she couldn’t determine what people discussed over their own kitchen tables. Both decided these were second order matters! Boy, aren’t we paying in blood for that when political upstarts, business moguls and financiers decide they are superior to the rest of the nation and will force us to bend to their will. In just a decade our world has turned on its head.
30
It makes me extremely despondent that journalists that are recognised as top class, like the two mentioned by Jo, cannot do some easy research or, at least, talk to known experts, such as Ian Plimer, to get a broader appreciation of both sides of the climate story.
Although I have a science background, like many on this site, two decades ago I was a believer in “global warming” caused entirely by man-made CO2 and I was extremely worried about it, as the theory all sounded so plausible and the models were all based on “science”.
But, possibly because I was taught by my university science lecturers to question all “facts”, I started to research everything I could find on “greenhouse gasses”, including the excellent papers by Jo’s husband (which do not seem to have seen the published light of day).
And here I am, a convinced sceptic who recognises the importance of greenhouse gasses in regulating our temperature but who now knows that they have little to do with our changing climate over the eons of time, and that is where we, on this site, differ from the likes of Sheridan and Kelly and so many others.
361
Ian Plimer’s book “Green Murder” (published by Connor Court) might shake things up a bit. The title says it like it is.
180
Right on. I too took the initial concerns as truth even though I studied Earth sciences- it was a given that CO2 would inhibit the reradiation of energy back to space and man was issuing much of it. Anyway other matters come to your attention and you look further and begin to question. Really glad that I did because living with nonsense science running my head would be unacceptable.

Here is another angle on nuclear power :
https://blogs.mediapart.fr/francois-vallet/blog/111121/nuclear-energy-warming-planet-and-climate
“NUCLEAR ENERGY IS WARMING UP THE PLANET AND THE CLIMATE
“Any use of non-renewable energy, or combustion of biomass, turns into heat that accumulates in the air, soil and water. Several scientific publications show that heat emissions are a major cause of global warming. Nuclear power plants, which emit a lot of heat per kWh produced, warm the climate.
“In France, on the other hand, with nearly 70% of the electricity produced by nuclear energy, which corresponds to nearly 20% of all the energy consumed, the global warming caused by nuclear power plants is quite visible. if we want to take the trouble to look at what is happening in real life and not in the virtual world of climate simulations or government visions of energy futures.
“A large part of the French population seems to have understood this well and does not trust the allegations of the nuclearists who assert that nuclear power does not warm the planet. A survey carried out by BVA in 2019 for the company Orano (formerly Areva) clearly indicates: “The fact that nuclear energy emits little CO2 is little known to the French, who on the contrary consider very largely (69%) that nuclear contributes to climate change.”[1]
“It is surely not the ignorance of the French which is the cause of the result indicated by BVA but quite simply the fact that they understand very well that nuclear power heats the planet in a consequent way when it is used on a large scale for the production of electricity.
01
The French also understand that having their own nuclear subs and keeping warm in winter go together.. They are survivors. Exporting immigrants to the UK is also good.
00
“the global warming caused by nuclear power plants is quite visible”
What, French girls wear bikinis and Arabs wear burkas? Some examples of where they ‘see’ the warming would make this believable, otherwise I’m quite sure the Earth can radiate the extra heat out into space without noticing it.
People have no idea how big the Earth is, and how small our effects are.
00

00
Paul Kelly and Greg Sheridan have clearly taken on board the alarmist global warming narrative
It is the required position for all Leftist/Globalists, so why be surprised?
150
News Corp has always been the outlier in the mainstream media because it’s voting shares and editorial control have been concentrated in the hands of Rupert Murdoch (not Murdock) and Saudi oil interests. The editorial line contradicting the 99.5% consensus in scientific literature could not hold forever. Kelly and Sheridan have finally been given license to write about climate change and have made their true opinions known.
In case you haven’t noticed, there is no longer serious public debate on the issue. The Overton window has shifted so News Corp had to shift as well.
130
And there I was thinking most windows are made of glass …
90
Charles V1 of France thought he was made of glass and lived in fear of shattering. Interesting dude.
50
His mum told him he was being a pain and he misinterpreted.
10
‘ … there is no longer serious public debate on the issue.’
The MSM continues to lose ground on this issue, but ultimately a change towards global cooling will see its credibility collapse.
200
“will see its credibility collapse”
How can something that doesn’t exist, collapse?
180
It is what it is, a collapse in MSM credibility by ordinary folk observing a noticeable cool change in the weather.
100
“99.5% consensus”
Are you stupid, or is it a joke?

https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1088/1748-9326/ac2966

Given you’re not joking James’ other option comes to the fore.
That study found that 2104 of the 3000 papers took no position. There’s 70% of your 99% gone right there.
20
yep. The reporters write what they are paid to write.
04
Probably not the most important climate hoax mistake, deliberately started I believe, but needs to be corrected is calling Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Carbon (C), and even worse referring to “Carbon pollution”.
240
Therein lies the ludicrous nature about CO2 and its conflate with Carbon. Pure laziness. Or worse.
150
“their true opinions known”
Their scientifically unsupportable opinions, you mean.
They have been either cowed or brain-washed or paid into “believing”
Scientific honesty, out the window.
The alarmists are way to scared to debate on the facts and science, it must not be allowed.
Thanks to your posts, everyone here has seen just how totally dishonest and science-free the AGW agenda is..
121
Why do journalists either fail to do research or ignore admissions like this one?
Investors Business Daily

Economic Systems: The alarmists keep telling us their concern about global warming is all about man’s stewardship of the environment. But we know that’s not true. A United Nations official has now confirmed this.
At a news conference last week in Brussels, Christiana Figueres, executive secretary of U.N.’s Framework Convention on Climate Change, admitted that the goal of environmental activists is not to save the world from ecological calamity but to destroy capitalism.
“This is the first time in the history of mankind that we are setting ourselves the task of intentionally, within a defined period of time, to change the economic development model that has been reigning for at least 150 years, since the Industrial Revolution,” she said.
Referring to a new international treaty environmentalists hope will be adopted at the Paris climate change conference later this year, she added: “This is probably the most difficult task we have ever given ourselves, which is to intentionally transform the economic development model for the first time in human history.”
The only economic model in the last 150 years that has ever worked at all is capitalism. The evidence is prima facie: From a feudal order that lasted a thousand years, produced zero growth and kept workdays long and lifespans short, the countries that have embraced free-market capitalism have enjoyed a system in which output has increased 70-fold, work days have been halved and lifespans doubled.
Figueres is perhaps the perfect person for the job of transforming “the economic development model” because she’s really never seen it work. “If you look at Ms. Figueres’ Wikipedia page,” notes Cato economist Dan Mitchell: Making the world look at their right hand while they choke developed economies with their left.

We all need to watch the Northern Hemisphere this Winter – the UK is bracing for -17 temperatures next week and pundits there are prediciting a “mini-ice age winter which builds on the previous colder than averate winters there. Added to that the wind drought and other power concerns in the UK, and we may see pensioners burning books to keep warm, again.
I wonder if the laws of physics are resulting in the wind drought as energy cannot be created so as the wind moves the turbine blades, energy must be transfered from the wind to the turbine resulting in less energy in the wind so less wind. I would be interested if anyone with more scientific knowledge can comment on that.
Here in Sydney, we are nine days out from the official start to Summer, and last night I was out to dinner with friends and we were all wearing jumpers or coats. Today it is 16 degrees, not unusual in November, but it has been another cool Spring (well, it is until the temperatures are massaged by the BOM to show it has been hotter than normal).
Empirical data continues to defy the models, but still people believe in their vacuous religion of alarmism and the associated doctrine of renewables.
240
William asked:
Wind generators contribute less than 1% of the energy used by humans. All human annual primary energy imbalance amounts to 0.57ZJ ((Zeta is 1E21.
The energy transfer from oceans to land peaks in December at 25.7ZJ 05 0.83ZJ per day. This is only the transfer from ocean to land via the water cycle as set out at this link:
https://wattsupwiththat.com/2021/11/14/global-water-cycle/
The energy transfer is via water evaporated in the oceans condensing over land. Places like the Amozon rain forest, the Congo, Malaysia, PNG, parts of Indonesia and norther Australia exhibit the results of this energy transfer with high December rainfall.
So EVERY day in December has more energy transfer ocean to land than the ENTIRE ANNUAL primary energy used by humans. Then wind generation is only a tiny fraction of the energy used by humans. Overall a tiny fraction of a tiny fraction.
The transfer off energy via water condensation is the result of the large difference in solar input between ocean and land, which reaches its maximum in January. That energy transfer is also expressed in the winds. Human collection of wind energy is trivial in comparison to global scale.
Local extraction of wind near the surface can certainly alter the local wind flows. Closely spaced wind turbines will interfere with each other. Typically, the horizontal separation of turbines should be at least 10 times their vertical extent. So a 200m high turbine should be 2km from the nearest turbine. Often they are mounted to take advantage of a prevailing wind. The 10H separation should be upstream and downstream but can be closer across the stream flow.
The idea that a trace gas can have a direct impact on Earth’s energy balance is so laughablely naive it is ridiculous. Any scientific institute pedalling this rubbish is being incorrectly identified. They are better described as religious orders.
The main point of the linked paper is the fact that ocean surface temperature is coolest when the ocean energy uptake is maximum. The greater the ocean heat input, the greater the evaporation and the greater the ocean cooling. It is absurd that climate models somehow do the physically impossible of getting heat into the deep oceans against the constant upwelling caused by evaporation. Oceans are warming because the water cycle is slowing down. No climate model has predicted the slowing of the water cycle because they are based on unphysical claptrap.

Why is there no questioning of the Bureau of Meteorology and the “errors and omissions” management admitted had resulted in BoM weather reporting not matching historic record data following a letter sent to the Minister 2013/14 in the Prime Minister Abbott led Coalition Government by scientist Dr Jennifer Marohasy, and the reported at that time recommendation by PM Abbott to his Cabinet Ministers that an independent audit, due diligence be conducted at the BoM, his proposal rejected by a small majority of votes?
And with due regard today for the follow up reports from Dr Marohasy and her colleagues covering BoM weather stations located in or alongside heat sinks resulting in misleading results, historic weather record data from before 1910 being ignored and apparently because of the heatwaves that would lower BoM modelling of a warming trend, and more?
190
Minister Greg Hunt had a lot to do with it. He is said to have pursuaded the cabinet that an inquiry might erode public confidence in the BOM.
Then he voted against Abbott and in favour of Turnbull for the leadership.
Jennifer Marohasy and Ken (Kens Kingdom) and others have done a lot to expose the failures of the BOM records and their perfidy regarding “Climate Change”.
Successive governments have done nothing to address the issues.

Hyundai Hypes Hydrogen
“He believes it’s also a solution to LIMITATIONS IN RENEWABLE ENERGY. Excess energy generated by wind turbines and solar panels (EXCESS ENERGY?), for example, could be directed towards creating hydrogen.”
Another clear admission that the unreliable, intermittent, so called renewable energy businesses cannot supply electricity delivered when needed, despite being subsidised for profits by governments using taxpayer’s monies, taxpayers who are also the consumers of electricity paying higher prices raising the cost of living and operating businesses.
Another climate hoax based solution to natural Earth Cycles of climate changing over time and weather events.

A few months back, a spokesperson for the Murdoch media announced it was going to support the climate narrative. Just as there was a definite but unspoken anti-Trump/ pro- Biden position established prior to the US elections all journalists on the Australian followed suite; it has happened again . Have you noticed that Rowan Dean on Sky no longer has his Sunday ‘global cooling watch’? Not only did the standard of journalism go down, the moderators took a hard line on any comments that failed to comply . The four topics you could not comment on were climate change, Biden ‘s weakness and failures, the integrity of the US elections, or opposing covid facts. The Australian is not the newspaper it was and it was with heavy heart I cancelled my subscription that I had for years, it was like a death in the family. Then a few days ago ‘The West Australian ‘published an article quoting Rupert Murdoch criticising the the big Tech moguls for their censorship – when he was doing exactly the same thing with the Australian.

If the Global financial houses can bully a nation of 25 million people to go Net Zero, what can’t they do? Where is the limit of their influence?
I don’t know that the bankers have influenced media moguls, I’m just asking if it’s possible. All large corporates need insurance. Most of them probably need finance.
There certainly has been a shift in The Australian.

Eminently possible.

I caught the “Encore” edition and he certainly had the weather watch/ global cooling section on there.

Isn’t that “excess energy” in NSW going to used to pump water up hill for Snowy 2? Alarmists and renewable zealots truly seem to believe in energy being created by magic fairy dust.

Aside from the ABC, all other media outlets rely on advertising revenues for their existence. Unfortunately, the Woke cancel culture from the left does impact revenue and it does influence journalistic opinion. The only way to cancel out the cancel culture is to make it illegal for activist groups to target businesses based on their political views, but this is not likely to happen due to the lack of political will to engage with the angry Woke mob and it’s also a difficult legal area to impose restrictions.
What we see today with Woke mob driven cancel culture and its influence in public debate and how that translates to media reporting, big business, political and legal systems, is more than very concerning. The Rittenhouse case in the USA is a good example of where the legal system produces an outcome based on what we all previously agreed is only way to achieve justice, but because the angry mob disagree with this outcome there is a now a push to change the system and the people in charge are leading that call. Essentially we are now moving to a new age of “mob justice”, where the angry mob are all aligned with an extreme political “Woke” ideology. This mob now determines their own version of the truth and to stray outside the narrative will have severe repercussions.

Good point!
The IPPC does not have any credibility except among those who wish to continue to promote the Global Warming narrative.

I find that if I criticise Paul Kelly on anything related to climate, my post never sees the light of day. In my last post to The Australian about a week ago I suggested several books, papers, and blog sites he could read to educate himself over the Xmas break. No response of course.

There was money to be made and local editors acquiesced.
‘News Corp Australia’s pivot away from climate change denial was the collective will of local news editors and not something imposed by Rupert Murdoch, the company’s global chief executive Robert Thomson said.
“Glasgow is the time to concentrate minds and thinking, and that’s what our local editors have done in Australia, not dictated by me or anyone else,” Mr Thomson told a Senate inquiry into media diversity on Friday.

Both Sheridan and Paul Kelly I think view global warming as a political rather than a scientific or environmental problem. To me they have the attitude enough people seem to think it’s a problem , financial corporates won’t lend to Australia.and even though they have no idea whether there is a real problem or not, life’s a lot easier if you at least pretend it is real. As political commentators I think they have misinterpreted noise and decibels as popularity. Climate change is a zero issue in all of Asia , half of America and all of Africa. The only reason that Africa supports it is cause they think there is freebie money in it. So the only countries that have been sucked into this Climate Alarmist Vortex are the Europeans ( ex Russia) and Australia. As soon as Biden is out of the White House ( assuming a Republican replaces him ) the US is out of all this rubbish. Support for crazy climate change action is genuinely supported ( ie are committed to spending gazillions on it) by probably countries representing 10% of the worlds population.
Both Kelly and Sheridan see Morrison’s actions as pragmatic and superior to Labor’s but their knowledge and understanding of the science is severely lacking. They should spend some time with actual research and get to know the facts. In the last 30 odd years we’ve had a theory been put forward, we’ve made predictions based on that theory of what data would emerge, data has emerged over that time to confirm whether the theory is correct and evaluation of that data has taken place and failed spectacularly. Then in the middle of the clinical trial they changed the primary end point of the experiment from temperature ( global warming) to weather events ( climate change ) and that has failed too. It takes a few hours of research to understand this and clearly Kelly and Sheridan do not take the topic seriously enough to find out. If they can’t be bothered trying to find the facts they should not write about it.
180
From the beginning, I was unconvinced about global warming and following fictions because the fundamental science was poorly done and because there was so much data manipulation. In my mineral exploration work, if you fudged important data you went to court, maybe to jail.
So, I encountered the Kelly gang, most often Mrs K when she was doing amazing tricks with her whiteboard as Minister for Environment et al. Ros was censured in Parliament in 1994 for using her office whiteboard to work out grants to sports bodies, weighted towards voters for her side of politics. She should have learned from Climategate in 2009, when activist scientists were revealed to be cheery picking data favourable to their side of global politics while keeping inadequate records and being obstinate about releasing them to other scientists.
Ros K and Paul K split up at a date that is hard to find by Internet search, but predictably they seem to have retained some old leanings like Left politics.
I used to bump into Ros when doing my government relations business for the company. Even wrote on a corner of her whiteboard when she was out of the parliamentary room. Paul, occasionally in the corridors of “power”.
My own opinion is that it is fruitless to compare journalists on scales of excellence because few of them these days exceed half way to the decent maximum. Independent journalistic research is less than it used to be. Rote reproduction of prepared material is easier.
Australia is fast descending into a social condition rather worse than that of the golden years of the late 1900s. The main cause that I can identify is a shift in the workforce from people wanting to pitch in to help others to too many people being paid to tell others what they can do and organising the punishments. This, when applied to education sector, facilitates the illusion of ignorance as the norm. It is all getting rather sick. Geoff S

Jo,
Have a read of this – a prediction – oil industry gone in 15 years – the finance will be shut off to it, same for coal and gas.
Logically, if the prevailing globalist belief system is protecting the planet from humanity, what better way to stop activity than cut off the money to the fossil fuel industries.

“UN Special Envoy Mark Carney has made a huge difference when it comes to getting financial services firms to align their lending and investment activities with the net-zero goals of the Paris agreement. In an acronym-heavy session of COP26 on November 3, Carney revealed that the total assets of combined companies committed to achieving net-zero emissions had risen to $130 trillion from $5 trillion at the beginning of the year.
“Known as the Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net-Zero (GFANZ), which Carney chairs, a consortium of over 450 financial firms across 45 nations have committed to align their own businesses, but most importantly their lending and investing, with net-zero goals. This is welcome news, as it can make significant inroads toward funding the $150 trillion estimated price tag required to blunt the worst impacts of climate change.

“London (CNN Business)Banks, insurers, pension funds, money managers and other finance firms with $130 trillion in assets have signed up to tackle the climate crisis, swelling the ranks of a coalition led by former Bank of England governor Mark Carney.
“More than 450 companies across 45 countries have now committed to achieving the goals of the 2015 Paris climate agreement, the Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero (GFANZ) announced Wednesday at the COP26 summit.
“The coalition controls over 40% of global banking assets, and its organizers predict it can deliver $100 trillion of finance over the next three decades — more than $3 trillion a year — to accelerate the transition to net zero carbon emissions.
“”We now have the essential plumbing in place to move climate change from the fringes to the forefront of finance so that every financial decision takes climate change into account,” said Carney, the UN special envoy for climate action and finance.
“GFANZ signatories have committed to science-based targets, including achieving net zero emissions by 2050 at the latest, delivering their share of 50% emission reductions this decade, and reviewing targets every five years. All firms will report their progress and financed emissions annually.

“As for oil and gas investment in Canada, presumably Wilkinson and the Trudeau green team are counting on the global private financial conglomerates to block funding to the country’s energy corporations. In recent days, amid the clamour for action at COP26, the line-up of non-government financial institutions planning to kill investment in the Canadian and global fossil fuel industries has expanded.

“Carney says more than 450 firms — including Canada’s big five chartered banks — have committed to supporting the goals of what’s become known as the Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero (GFANZ).
“Net zero means countries are no longer adding heat-trapping greenhouse gases to the atmosphere. Some greenhouse gases might still be emitted, but they would be balanced off or “cancelled out” by the removal of an equivalent amount of greenhouse gases. The concept is similar to carbon neutrality but includes more than just carbon dioxide emissions.
“Firms that sign onto the GFANZ agreement are promising to abide by 24 financial initiatives that will signal to their customers, shareholders and investors that they are making green investments a priority.

To me it seems independent thought and seeking alternate opinions died with the ‘97% of scientists agree the world is warming and mankind is responsible..’ (to paraphrase). Regardless that the particular article barely survived a week of acceptance, it did the damage intended. For some unknown reason the political classes in the West accepted it as gospel, belittled any citizen daring to argue their position, labelled them sceptics and proceeded to cancel any climate scientist (a very big field) that objected. Remember the CSIRO’s dastardly handling of one of its own that decided, for balance, that a contrarian opinion paper should be presented. That person was the original ‘non-collegiate employee.
Since then, despite the paper on %scientists being debunked as junk, it has been thrown at any person with differing opinions to the extent that they shouldn’t be heard.
With governments captured by the EU-UN pronouncements and falling dutifully into line (what use is the Chief Scientist’s position really?), it’s no wonder that the media fell into position as the matter sold papers and time and simply followed the same position taken by our increasingly leftist driven governments since Abbott. With government and media in position and major destruction of energy systems being reflected in our indusrial movements overseas, it is unsurprising there was a huge movement by the financial sector to make hay in the new system.
I may be unfair to Kelly, but his political bent has always been of the left. One has no idea of his exposure to maths and science educationally but reasonable and all as he normally is, sometimes it is easier to accept the wisdom of the powers that be as truth and work according to that background.
Sheridan, on the other hand is something of a quandary. Even if of limited maths and science training, he seems to be able to dissect matters on boats, submarines and defence and all sorts of topics very well. One wonders if both these journalists haven’t simply accepted the official line on climate – and COVID-19 – as being without question. The use of fear campaigns by activists, politicians, the EU and the UN have been very effective in driving the public to blindly follow where they are led. One is always stunned by the fact that there is so little counter arguments ever heard from mathematicians, especially statisticians, and scientists on AGW reports. Even the fact that the IPCC itself is becoming increasingly guarded in its outputs doesn’t seem to change the climate story from governments. Are such arguments suppressed by commercial policies of media organisations?
The fact now seems to be that the entire basis of the Western Democracies are so committed to the destruction they have wrought in the name of saving the planet that they have passed the position of no return. Governments have so messed the systems that the have rendered themselves impotent to control the future. Big Business, media, banks and financial institutions now rule the roost in determining our future, virtually overriding the governments ability to control it. Institutions now determine what will be funded and what wont eg coal, and they act now on an international basis. They control the narrative via the media. They proselytise about how we, supposedly the owners of our nation, should and will act and mandate health matters to serve their needs.
We see Kelly and Sheridan, but they are overwhelmed by the tide. We missed the boat the day we gave up our freedoms and allowed ourselves to be made subservient to the loudest voices of activists and carpetbaggers, fear campaigns
and empowered commercial businesses to make us their servants instead of the other way around. We keep surrendering our freedoms to the cause of those politicians that simply see everything as votes to maintain their own positions.

After Sinclair Davidson folded up Catallaxy Files (founded by Jason Soon almost 20 years ago) several people set up new sites for homeless Cats and the winner appears to be this one that is run by the dedicated conservative who uses the highly evocative name Dover Beach (google the poem by Mathew Arnold.) It’s probably a human thing, but Sheridan and Kelly are two fine examples of self admiration.
Rafe himself says in this article, “Kelly and Sheridan are pre-eminently political commentators…”.
Credlin introduces them both as eminent, expert and most knowledgeable (or words to that effect.
The two who take this on board the most, are Sheridan and Kelly.
Both (likely) believe that they are now infallible. After all, everyone says so, so they must be!
Rafe has called them out, but I’m sure it will be to no avail. I’m also sure that neither gentleman will reverse his course. They have gone down the track too far, and invested too much cred.
I’m perhaps being hard on Sheridan and Kelly, as there are literally hundreds of similars.
But Rafe mentioned them.

Yes Cynic, I picked two who get a lot of space in the paper that maintained a degree of balance longer than the yellow or gutter press.
It won’t make any difference in the short term but if those of us who have access to a platform remain silent, who will speak.
We have to support the people who are suspicious of the prestigious frauds but don’t know enough to be certain and don’t have a platform, be it ever so humble to make public statements.
Repeating a statement from the signature of Frank Brus of the Five Dock Climate Realists, quoting Bourke “Nobody ever made a greater mistake than he who did nothing because he could only do a little.”
