Australia’s Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) is expecting neutral ENSO:
“La Niña continues in the tropical Pacific, but has weakened from its peak in spring 2022. Though ocean temperatures have warmed in recent weeks, atmospheric indicators are largely unchanged and remain at La Niña levels. La Niña typically increases the chance of above average rainfall for northern and eastern Australia during summer.
Long-range forecasts suggest that tropical Pacific Ocean temperatures will continue to warm and be at ENSO-neutral levels (neither La Niña nor El Niño) during February, with a change in atmospheric patterns towards neutral levels likely to follow. As accuracy is generally lower for long-range forecasts made at this time of year, ENSO outlooks that extend past autumn should be viewed with caution.”
BOM tend to be pretty good re ENSO (El Nino, La Nina). Note that ‘Autumn’ is southern hemisphere autumn, ie. Mar-May.

Cultural differences are a big problem, and languages barriers, and of course education including how to survive and prosper in a modern economy and multicultural nation.

Given the number of health benefits, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations has called for increased efforts towards destigmatizing insect consumption. In the current study, researchers from Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC) surveyed 1,034 people on their views about eating insects. More than four in five (86%) have never eaten an insect, with only 13 percent saying they’ve tried it at least once.
The main reason for passing on insects is disgust. The poll finds 38 percent say it grosses them out, with another 15 percent saying it’s not a part of their culture to eat bugs. Nine percent had concerns about the safety of eating insects.
Even when the study authors asked people to consider incorporating insects into their normal diet, many people rejected the idea. Only 16 percent would be open to the possibility. Dining in a restaurant offering insect dishes did not do much to sway the poll’s stance on insect consumption. Nearly three in four (73%) say they would not select this option.
Despite consistent rejection and disgust over eating insects, scientists are hopeful people will become open-minded over time. In another survey, 50 percent of respondents believe having information on insects as a sustainable food source would encourage people to eat them.

Many years ago I read of the terrible and unnecessary deaths of large number of new University students in Japan with initiation rites, typically drinking a lot of whiskey as they did in America. Every year scores died. The ultimate reason was that 20% of Japanese lack the enzyme to metabolize alcohol and what would have been a hard night killed first year students.
Later it occurred to me that while in law all men are created equal, medically we are all different. And the aboriginals could likely lack this enzyme entirely. After all there was no casual alcohol in their society.
In Asia, a symbiosis between monkeys and fruit trees meant most trees bore edible sweet fruit.In Africa you can see giraffes and elephants drunk on rotted fruit. In the Pacific, the islanders have their kava. But in Australia there were almost no monkeys, no fruit trees, no sugar and without agriculture, no heaps of seeds to rot and ferment. So no alcohol. And without the enzyme, simple alcohol is a poison.
So it is likely that Mr Darwin had no chance to select the gene for the enzyme and if a modern society like Japan can lack the enzyme, it is likely aborigines do not have it.
What that means is that alcohol is not a right for aborigines but deadly. What for Europeans is a night drinking, for them is alcohol levels which are near lethal. Opening a bar next to a community is like putting Darrell Lea in a town of diabetics.
I would love to see someone prove this. It would be easy enough. The police could check alcohol levels with their breathalizers and match to the consumption. A simple test would show it. I warrant what would be a negligible few glasses of beer for a European would could be a far higher level in the bloodstream of an aboriginal.
This needs investigation, not legislation. What I hate are Left Liberals who demand the right for aborigines to drink to death as a human right. Race based restrictions on alcohol could save many lives.
However as an isolated community for over 50,000 years, even a generation later you might have the enzyme. For full blood aborigines in the desert, they need legal protection. And clearly the violence is far greater than any other community as the impact of the alcohol is far greater and then leads to short lifespans and all sorts of alcohol related damage.

When I was a boy, no one had any ‘intolerances’ in diet. Now we can see the effects of celiac disease and the need for gluten free food. And diabetes and sugar. Lactose intolerance. Peanuts. The list is very long. I once had a manager who was half Choctaw Indian and she carried adrenalin in case someone was cooking onions and her throat would immediately close over. It’s all about inherited tolerances, European for American food and Americans for European food.
And the case of aborigines is very special because there is almost no sugar in this country, unlike Asia and Africa. It possibly also explains why there were so few people because there was no natural food, unless you knew exactly where to look and what was poisonous and what was edible. And that’s not a lot unless you can digest cellulose. And the animals either moved very fast or the snakes were 9 of the ten deadliest, and that must be connected. You cannot afford your prey to hop away at 60km/hr.
It’s not as if alcohol was not a curse for the Irish! But at least it took a great volume. For aborigines, I doubt it would take much but this obsessive ‘freedom’ is killing aborigines. It’s not freedom, it’s a death sentence for individuals and communities.

I recently got a ‘gig’ on talkback radio, speaking about wind generation.
I’ve never done anything like that before, (and as you listen to the audio, that is pretty much painfully obvious) so this was new for me.
The radio station was Cairns 89.1FM, a community radio station in Cairns, so at the opposite end of the State.
