Is Climate Change really caused by electronic thermometers? (The BOM don’t want Australians to see the data)

 The Australian

By Jo Nova

Electronic thermometers may read up to 0.7 degrees higher than glass ones.

Sometime in the mid-1990s the Australian Bureau of Meteorology replaced many of their glass thermometers with electronic sensors. They claimed they were carefully verified to match the slow way the old glass thermometers worked — after all, we wouldn’t want to use gizmos that recorded new all-time *Hottest Ever Records* that were actually just one-second gusts of hot air, would we? Our newspapers would be full of meaningless headlines about how Climate Change made us hotter than ever in history, when really it was just a mistaken effect of a new type of thermometer. Imagine that disaster of public policy…

Of course this question is so easily solved. The BoM just needed to keep the two thermometers side by side in the same boxes and record all that data. Then they could release it, showing how well the electronic gadgets mimicked the glass thermometers, and Australians everywhere would feel confident that BoM was the sterling agency they thought it was. Instead Skeptics have been asking for comparison data for nine years and the BoM has refused, hedged, asked exorbitant fees, destroyed data and when the FOI requests came — fought them tooth and nail to stop Australians from seeing what their thermometers recorded.

Climate change threatens life on Earth, but the BoM isn’t that interested in accurate data, doesn’t want to convince the skeptics, doesn’t care if the trends are affected by equipment changes and can’t afford some extra flash drives, even though it gets nearly a million-dollars-a-day. Sure.

Jennifer Marohasy and John Abbott have doggedly pursued the BoM for three years with FOI requests. Finally the BoM have released a tiny fraction of the total, and it is as we suspected — electronic sensors can measure flickering changes in temperature that glass thermometers don’t pick up. Other agencies around the world average out the data from electronic gizmos but the Australian BOM says they have special thermometers which are designed to mimic the old thermometers, and they work so well the BOM can’t let you see any of that data….

Mercury rises in Bureau of Meteorology probe row

Graham Lloyd, The Australian

The documents, released after a years-long Freedom of Information campaign, show temperature measurements taken using updated BOM probes in automatic weather stations at the Brisbane Airport site could be up to 0.7C warmer than the temperature taken using a traditional thermometer at the same time at the same site.

More than three years after a FOI request for parallel data was lodged by scientist John Abbot, the BOM released three years of data on Easter eve after the matter was taken to the Administrative Appeals Tribunal.

The BoM says there’s no significant difference:

Yet analysis of the data by scientist Jennifer Marohasy has found a statistically significant difference exists. Over the three-year period for which records have been made available, probes returned temperatures higher than the mercury thermometers placed alongside them 41 per cent of the time…  and lower 25.9 per cent of the time.

Dr Marohasy said the BOM had not disputed that the probe at Brisbane Airport had recorded up to 0.7C warmer than the mercury at the same site at the same time.

Once again, the BoM releases it in the most inconvenient way possible — 1,000 sheets of paper?

The documents released by the BOM under the FOI request included 1094 A8 reports with the handwritten daily maximum and minimum temperatures from both probes and traditional liquid-in-glass thermometers recorded from instruments in the same shelter/Stevenson screen.

They represent about 20 per cent of the parallel records held for the Brisbane airport site, one of 38 sites originally requested under FOI.

So does the BoM collect electronic data, and write it by hand on paper? They don’t digitize it and run it through the supercomputer —  they analyze it with pen, paper and slide rule?

Or perhaps they have all the handy digital files, but they don’t want to hand over all the nuclear launch codes, I mean “top secret” thermometer readings…

Dr Marohasy said the data represented just three of the 14.5 years (January 2008 to July 2022) of parallel data that the bureau held for Brisbane Airport.

“It is also just a fraction of the 760 years of parallel data the bureau holds for 38 different locations spread across the landmass of Australia,” she said.

Trust us, our thermometers are so good we can’t tell you:

The rest of the world averages electronic temperatures over longer periods, but the Australian BOM has better thermometers:

Bureau chief executive Andrew Johnson has told her the probes were specifically designed to have a long response time to mirror the behaviour of mercury in glass, making numerical averaging unnecessary.

Dr Marohasy said the lack of numerical averaging despite the use of probes made the BOM measurements unique in the world.

If Climate Change is caused by electronic “thermometers” it’ll be cheaper to solve…

UPDATE: The effect the electronic sensors can have is so much more complicated than “mean temperature” deviations. Even if the average temperature recorded by an electronic sensor was the same as as a glass one, the extremes could be quite different. And the behaviour of air, turbulence and variability at 3pm when maximum temperatures are recorded is different to the pre-dawn minimum hour of day. At the very least, electronic sensors could be offering up many more “Headline” records for heat, and increasing three day, five day, week long heatwaves, plus hottest nights, more days over 35C — there are many cherries to be picked here.  Potentially, the electronic sensors offer a bonanza of propaganda headlines for the Green Blob to pick from, especially when “coldest ever days” get ignored by the media.

Read it all in The Australian.

A charge that needs to be laid,
Is that electronic gauges will aid,
Catch a peak heat snap-shot,
Where glass thermometers will not,
Then hyped as a heat-rise man-made.

If they can read up to 0.7 degrees higher they might also read 0.7 degrees lower at the other end of the scale.

Working outdoors the hottest days I remember were windy. On such a day you will at times get hit with a gust of wind which seems much hotter. But you would think that with a strong wind the air would be fairly thoroughly mixed. So my guess is that it is not in fact hotter, but feels hotter because the extra velocity has overloaded the skin’s cooling system, i.e. perspiration.

When it is not windy you can certainly get variations in temp over small distances. This can be seen for example with frost damage on a crop. It seems very foolish to me to be ‘adjusting” records because the reading doesn’t match another reading a hundred km away.

“If they can read up to 0.7 degrees higher they might also read 0.7 degrees lower at the other end of the scale.”

That may be the case, but until we get the data we don’t know. It may not be as symmetrical as you might think. Cold air doesn’t tend to travel around in floating blobs ready to trigger a one-second record. There is probably more temperature variability at the “high energy” sun-powered part of the day, rather than the minimum hour before dawn. Wouldn’t there by more chaotic turbulence when the sun is feeding energy onto surfaces of different albedo?

And in any case, if electronic sensors caused increased maxes and lower mins, we know the media-filter will select only the hotter abberations for front page headlines. The BoM can also edit out minimums that are “too low” like they did at Thredbo.

I remember when Goulburn had a minimum of -10.6C one morning and the BoM adjusted it back to -10C. Just as well an observer picked it up and complained.
          ‘You adjusted that minimum”.
          “No we didn’t.”
          “Yes you did”.
“Oh, yes, the ethermometers were faulty. Sorry.”

I wonder how many times they do that.

              The real temp was -10.6C
              That was the real minimum.
They put -10C on the record, from my memory,
they put it as -10.0C, to avoid any hint at truncation.

The only temp I can find that matches this is a -10.4C in 2017 but I’m not sure if it’s the same date when the above occurred.

I think the most important point is that the measured temps using the electronic devices do not accurately represent what the mercury thermometers would read. Therefore the historical references to past temperatures are useless as a guide to any “warming” change. It’s the old “apples and oranges” thing.

Electronic measurements. Warm locations-often airports- and general effects of the Urban Heat island and you have much of the explanation.

Add in that the old mercury thermometers were not always easy to read, were not always read by an experienced observer, were not always read at the same time each day and were not always calibrated and you add in further complications.

The whole secret to electronic instruments is that they can be calibrated at any time to read anything you desire.

“ World sea temperatures are not high enough to cause fear in the public??”
Give me a minute or two & I’ll re calibrate!! What temperature would you prefer today?

Mercury thermometers can only be recalibrated by dumping the old & replacing it with a new re calibrated reading. So temperatures will not increase in accordance with the narrative!!

        “Calibrated”
Most do not understand what that means.
It means that when the instrument was compared to a recognized standard it reported within some accuracy tolerance. It does not mean that a minute later it will still report the same measurement accuracy.Instruments must be recalled periodically and verified that they are still reporting within the acceptable accuracy tolerance. If they are found to be “out of tolerance” how does one determine when the measurements became unreliable? Instruments are assigned a predicted reliabilty interval after which they are accuracy verified and the recall interval are often. shortened or lengthened in accordance with its reliability history.
That said, if an instrument fails accuracy verification after its recall interval the data collected must be considered invalid. Any “adjustments” are speculative.
Auditing the calibration/verification history of the instruments is important to ensure the veracity of the resulting reported data.

In the 1980s, for seven years, I was the chief reader and recorder of temperatures at the Laboratory.

I refute your comments. Readers and recorders, in my experience, took extreme care to read and record all measurements. When a new member joined the team (s)he would be ‘shadowed’ by me to see that (s)he were recording the parameters correctly.

As for time, a few minutes early or late is not important. Mercury in glass Max and Min thermometers would have, for a long time, recorded their temperature by 09:00 GMT.

I’d say they must likely did that. But by the time someone in authority, actually thought to check the data. They had already nailed their flag to the climate change mast.
The standard in any bureaucracy, is the larger the bureaucracy. The less chance the people at the top have the faintest idea what is going on, on the ground. Imagine a huge carpentry bureaucracy, the CEO wouldn’t know what a claw hammer was.
In fact the first time they probably even knew about the data was when it was asked for. You can imagine the panic when they were informed what it contained.

Bureau chief executive Andrew Johnson has told her the probes were specifically designed to have a long response time to mirror the behaviour of mercury in glass, making numerical averaging unnecessary.

What is the algorithm used by, and the design of the thermometers and their specific response characteristics?

The algorithm and/or physical and response characteristics of the thermometer must be published. It’s basic scientific technique.

Or is it like their “homogenisation” algorithm? It’s so top secret that no mere mortal scientists or members of the public can understand it and it’s not written down anywhere and it’s entirely inside the heads of those who fabricate Australia’s temperature records?

    Here’s the deal:

If the temperature measurement technique (i.e. the thermometer algorithm and response characteristics) is not known or published, then it’s not science, it’s politics.

If the “homogenisation” algorithm is not known or published then it’s not science, it’s politics.

Without both of the above two being published the results produced by the BoM are meaningless and of no value whatsoever.

Back in the day, a failure to publish measurement methodology in a scientific paper for critical measurements would have resulted in a rejection of the paper.

It’s unbelievable that Australia’s economy is being systematically destroyed on the basis of a measurement error.

          Abbott tried.

Sweet cheeses, what does it to wake some of you people up.

Abbott “considered” . . . but was talked out of it.

Abbott “believed” global warming was crap . . . then he became Opposition Leader and campaigned for an emissions trading scheme (ETS).

As PM Abbott chose a Japanese diesel electric submarine, then when he lost his seat advised that we should have bought American nuclear instead.

During the 2013 election Abbott “vowed” to repeal S18 of the Human Rights Act, then in his very first act as PM reneged on the deal.

In the same election Abbott promised to “stop the boats”, then as PM redefined boat country shoppers as “undocumented migrants” and flew 160,000 of them in, at taxpayer’s expense, in his first year.

I could go on for another hour, but it wouldn’t make any difference to the prevailing mindset here – that somehow Liberals are “better” than Labor.

It seems you have forgotten the speech Clive Palmer, standing with Al Gore on the steps of OUR parliament house, delivered on the opening day of the new senate in July 2014.

Under Al’s influence the PUP “protected” the carbon tax that is the RET, and thwarted Abbott’s “landslide mandate” left, right and centre.

Abbott’s biggest mistake was to maximise the productivity of the parliament by negotiating with the senate and only sending up legislation which would pass. He should have put more pressure on the senate than he did.

We didn’t get an Abbott government. We got a Gore government, by way of the PUP in the senate.

No doubt Abbott was saving the rest for a cast iron mandate with a double dissolution election, but Turnbull usurped that and threw it away.

The TAF some years ago tried to get to the bottom of the Bureau’s homogenisation process. In their report, it was stated that Bureau staff had to be called in to explain the homogenisation process. That to me indicates that either the process is not fully documented and quality-controlled so that it can be implemented by anybody, or that the process requires human intervention at one or more stages. Could even be a bit of both. Regardless, it appears that the BOM has a key process that is not fully quality-controlled

My recollection is that the perceived problems were gaps in the records and site moves.

When the BOM published its first set of adjusted/homogenised records Ken Stewart ran their numbers and found them absurd. This showed us that 1. the BOM was not competent to do this work, and 2. they hadn’t even checked their work to discover the absurdity, and 3. they were probably trying to automate the job.

This job was quietly shelved and eventually replaced by ACORN-SAT with the assurance that this was world’s best practice, to later become ACORN_SAT 1 when ACORN-SAT 2 was released.

Noted warmist Admiral Titley summed it up very neatly years ago when he said: “Every time they run the numbers they get a worse result.” Not, it seems, noticing that this means that mostly or always they got it wrong, and there was a bias in their method.

      David,
IIRC, the type of digital thermometer being used was revealed several years back during a lie-storm from the BoM while trying to justify setting a -10C lower limit on readings.

They are a platinum wire thermocouple with very fast response time. Internationally, five minute averages are considered minimum. BoM was using far less.

Essentially the BoM chief has lied. The thermocouples themselves are not “designed to mimic glass thermometers”. Software averaging 5 minutes of readings comes close, but the BoM was not doing that at the time the -10C fudge was discovered.

Back in the days when science was actually taught in real schools and real universities, they used to teach measurement errors as one of the first science topics.

Types of error included (From https://www.helpyoubetter.com/measurement-error-and-types-of-errors/)

Difference between Accuracy, Least Count and Precision.

Different types of errors in measurement:

    Constant error
    Systematic error

    Types of systematic error

    Instrumental error
    Gross error
    Error due to external causes
Error due to imperfection in experimental technique or procedure
    Random error
    Absolute error
    Relative error
    Percentage error

    Combination of errors

Error in the sum of the quantities
Error in the difference of the quantities
Error in the product of the quantities
Error in the quotient of the quantities
Error when a quantity is raised to a power

    Etc.

But remember, the Left and their whole political and “scientific” (sic) machine subscribe to the doctrine of post modernism, the belief that there is no such thing as objective reality.

Back in the day, Australia used to have the outstanding National Measurement Laboratory (at Lindfield, NSW) which was part of the CSIRO which was, among other things, responsible for maintaining Australia’s measurement standards.

I remember doing an experiment their once which required the use of one of their calibrated platinum resistance thermometers which had a maximum calibration uncertainty of 30mK at liquid helium temperatures (4.2K), but probably much better than that.

They took great pride in their work back then.

Australia once had all the expertise needed to make sure the BoM did their measurements correctly.

The US counterpart to BoM, NOAA, isn’t scared to publish details of their measurement technique and apparatus, although their data maltreatment to produce the desired results is different to BoM, but at least their raw data collection methodology is stated. They even do this under the Biden Maladministration.

    https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/access/crn/measurements.html

    Surface Air Temperature
Each USCRN station has three thermometers which report independent temperature measurements each hour. These three observed temperature value are used to derive a single official USCRN temperature value for the hour. This single value is sometimes a median and sometimes an average of various combinations of the three observed values, depending on information about which instruments agree in a pairwise comparison within 0.3°C. Each station transmits the three independent observed values; the computation of the official USCRN temperature value is done after these values arrive at NCEI. The discussion below describes the details of the three observed values.

Each station has three Thermometrics platinum resistance thermometers, each of which is housed in its own Met One 076B 7308 aspirated solar shield. Each thermometer measures the temperature (in degrees Celsius) every 2 seconds. Every 5 minutes the station datalogger computes the average of these 2-second values, giving 12 5-minute averages for each thermometer. Standard deviations are also calculated for each thermometer. Finally, a moving 5-minute average displaced 10-seconds at a time is used to determine the maximum and minimum 5-minute periods ending within the hour in question.

In addition to the thermometer values, the station also measures the speed of the fan in each aspirated shield. As the shield’s fan rotates, a contact closes and generates a pulse twice per rotation. The datalogger counts these pulses every two seconds. Every hour these 2-second values are averaged to obtain an average number of pulses per second for the hour. The hourly data stream from the station thus include the average pulse rate per second for each of the three sensors. The actual speed of the fan in revolutions per second is half the pulse rate.

“the BoM isn’t that interested in accurate data”

The US at least feigned an interest when they set up USCRN, and now adjust all other data to match it (bring warming to a halt)

BoM could have done a similar thing, we have plenty of unused area slated for zero development.

But instead, they stick with a mish-mash of site that are TOTALLY UNSUITABLE for “climate” purposes, and apply their “black box” of homogenisation, in the pretence that it is going to give a reliable result.

As you say, the BoM isn’t that interested in accurate data

How often, if at all, do the BoM check the calibration of their measuring equipment?

Regular checking of equipment calibration used for critical measurements was something real scientists did, back in the day.

BoM stations at Rowley Shoals and Bedout Island are both now missing since Cyclone Ilsa passed over. I noticed the wind gusts were recorded at a maximum of 289 km hr before it failed at Bedout Island about 115 km NNW of Port Hedland.

I note that the Perth site was Perth Airport, not the Perth site itself. I believe that during the three moves of the measuring site in Perth, there either was inadequate parallel measurements or none at all.
(There was a fourth earlier site, but it didn’t use a Stevenson screen.)

As far as I know the BoM doesn’t publish any of the side by side data. They say they verify or calibrate or check the instruments, but they don’t publish the data they use. Why would that be?

Read the post I wrote in 2017 about Bill Johnstons efforts starting in 2014. He just wanted 6 months of data on parallel thermometers in Sydney and Canberra but they wanted to charge him $460. He argued “public benefit” and they reduced the cost to $230 (for 6 months of data!). Reviewing those costs and the paper work would have cost more than $230. In the end the BoM said they couldn’t supply Canberra data because they had destroyed it automatically 12 months after collecting it.

If only climate science mattered eh?

If only they could afford a 64Gb USB stick at Officeworks…?

Can anyone explain this behaviour? It’s hard to make sense of it unless they know they are cheating.

Ripping Yarns Season 1 Episode 2-The Testing Of Eric Olthwaite

Go to 21:56 / 28:49 where Eric is the dashing robber stealing rainfall records.

Eric Olthwaite is so boring that his family all leave home to escape him. Then one day he is accidentally caught up in a bank robbery and discovers that the robber shares his interests in shovels, black pudding and rainfall so they team up to make daring raids to steal rainfall records. As a result Eric becomes famous and is considered interesting again, so much so that he is made the mayor of Denley Moor.

Senator Rennick had a real life comedy skit recorded for posterity.

Behind it all is the notion that a change of 0.7C is significant. That’s laughable unless you are at zero C, the melting point of water. Even your breath is far hotter at 31-35C and far wetter than the air you breathe in at say 20C. A test for life is a mirror to see condensation of the hot water vapour. Internally you are running at 37C. As with other warm blooded animals like cows or elephants or whales. (A baleen whale’s core body temperature is about 36.6˚–37.2˚C)

So the idea that an external 1C change is significant for human existence or the planet is absurd fantasy. When discussing the idea of a temperature scale, Sir Isaac Newton proposed for 100 degrees might be set at water so hot you couldn’t keep your elbow in it. And for the leading thinkers of the day, it was enough. Mothers still test water with their elbows. And for most purposes it still is adequate. Until 1988.

There are some processes in chemistry and especially biochemistry which are temperature critical. 98.4F is the precise temperature for the transition of the characteristics some materials like cartilege. It is a temperature maintained so carefully in warm blooded creatures that it is clearly significant, but humans do that internally. Other chemical processes can be found to be very temperature dependent, like ice formation. But the rapid development of accurate thermometers was driven by beer making as the behaviour of yeast (fungus) was found to be temperature critical. And beer drove the world before pasteurization and since. (at least until Dylan Mulvaney)

The business of man made Climate Change and rapid sea rise and increased storms has been found over 35 years of runaway warming to be wrong, utterly wrong. The temperature changes people plot are insignificant. And as atmospheric Physicist Richard Linzen says, meteorology dictates increased temperatures decrease storm activity. So that was all just a lie. The end of the world did not happen in 2000, 2010, 2020. The sea level rise did not happen. The end of the world did not happen. It’s over.

So why does the lie continue? Could it be the $1,500,000,000,000 a year spent on failing to control CO2 levels or the weather? And where has the money gone? Are we allowed to ask or does that make you a ‘denier’?

    341

I can offer a clue. China outputs more CO2 than all other countries combined. China makes most of the world’s windmills and solar panels. It is opening a new coal power station every week. And it is the recipient of all the Climate cash while Australia has enshrined in law a plan to force all mining, manufacturing, transport, farming, shipping businesses to close. Do you even need to ask Cui Bono?

      291

      • #
        TdeF

And why pass a law to restrict CO2 ’emissions’ as ‘pollution’ in the ‘Safeguard Mechanism’ Act to destroy all Australian businesses and farmer and miners when in 35 years no one has actually seen a problem? Or proven there is one. There’s a good chance the alleged Southern Hemisphere tiny, tiny warming is entirely a creation of an activist political BOM in the third of the planet which has only 2% of human population.

Because no force on earth can control CO2 levels in the atmosphere. So no one is even trying. Which is very odd because that was supposed to be the only problem.

And why isn’t every company in Australia in revolt at this impost? All the miners, railways, smelters, glass makers, chemical manufacturers, Qantas, Virgin, trucking companies, even sewage works, the Spirit of Tasmania?

Why is the Albanese government shutting down the entire country with punitive taxes. And giving total priority to introducing racism to the very Constitution? Instead of solving actual problems. Is this just a distraction from the real disaster of his ‘Safeguard Mechanism’? Who is driving this agenda? It certainly is not the electors.

    It’s Time!

Fifteen comments so far and the core thrust of them aligns indisputably with a comment yesterday about Snowey Mountains Type 2 boring, but not boring.

The environmentally friendly “tunnel” was shown up as being, with 97% certainty, another attack on the citizens of Australia where the aim was to load us with a huge debt and a blocked tunnel never to be used to generate clean electricity.

The heavy multi_million dollar excavator was named Malcolm, in memory of the insult offered to all Australians.

He’s laughing all the way to his son’s sharetrading activities; hang on, this is starting to sound Bidenesque.

Whether it’s the weather, or COVID19, or VaXXinations, or PhDs, Piled Higher and Deeper to show that we are an intelligent nation, or huge donations to other nations supposedly “suffering” more than us, the comments all point to one indisputable conclusion:

We Are Being Used And Laughed At for our stupidity in putting up with this abrogation of our rights under the basic law on which our nation was built.

    It’s time.

We could start by demanding that Malcolm pay for the removal of Malcolm from the tunnel, make it safe etc before the well deserved rest in gaol.

It’s time, we know what’s happening, we must demand our rights.

They should just leave Malcolm buried in the mountain and walk away. A fitting memorial to someone who made a mess of just about everything. Who needs a sign? It is already a waste of $2.5Bn on something which is a total waste of taxpayer money. Why spend another $10Bn proving Malcolm has the gift of turning everything to mud.

You wonder what would have happened to the failed lawyer if he had not been an only son who inherited three million when his father died in a plane crash. A struck gold as a merchant banker. Perhaps it is why he hated his rival Tony Abbott, a man of strong principles who achieved so much on his own.

Donald Horne and his “The Lucky Country” statement of 1964 is frequently misquoted.

The full and correct quote is:

Australia is a lucky country run mainly by second rate people who share its luck. It lives on other people’s ideas, and, although its ordinary people are adaptable, most of its leaders (in all fields) so lack curiosity about the events that surround them that they are often taken by surprise.

In 1976 in Death of the Lucky Country he clarified his 1964 comment:

When I invented the phrase in 1964 to describe Australia, I said: ‘Australia is a lucky country run by second rate people who share its luck.’ I didn’t mean that it had a lot of material resources … I had in mind the idea of Australia as a [British] derived society whose prosperity in the great age of manufacturing came from the luck of its historical origins … In the lucky style we have never ‘earned’ our democracy. We simply went along with some British habits.

For many years the official placement was behind the Post Office right in middle of town, now it is over a km away up the sheltered side of hill called the Lookout. … exactly which part of temperature measurement is stochastic?

The concept of temperature is stochastic, by its very nature … that’s why you get thermal noise in electronic components, including a Platinum wire resistor. However, if you only want samples every 2 seconds, then a suitable low pass filter would reduce the bandwidth and get rid of most of that noise.

There would also tend to be RF picked up in the pre-amps although again, careful filtering would minimize that. You can never get rid of the whole lot, but at a guess I would say they simply keep the standard deviation of the 5 minute batch in order to have a quick check that nothing has blow up. If they start getting unusually high values they would drive out and take a look.

There should be an audit of the BOM something I think Tony Abbot wanted but was dissuaded by Greg Hunt. The ability to mislead the public on the climate data has established the whole foundation to build the narrative of the global warming scare and the policy disasters that flow from it. Destroying the credibility of our financial institutions would be the most effective way to fight the climate wars. When the would is prepared to destroy our way of life because of 1.5 degrees a .7 of a degree error bar is significant. When one then considers the urban heat island effect and movement of weather station locations one wonders whether there has been any warming at all and certainly nothing outside the natural variations that have always occured. The fact that no one has the energy or ability to even argue whether any warming is happening shows how effectively the climate cabal has been in shutting down debate. When the climate wars are over there should be people tried for crimes against humanity because the consequences of this deceit has been so dramatic and widespread with most of the climate policy victims being those who are already most vulnerable and disadvantaged.

    760 years?

“Dr Marohasy said the data represented just three of the 14.5 years (January 2008 to July 2022) of parallel data that the bureau held for Brisbane Airport.

Just guessing they really mean site-years. 760 site years / 38 sites = 20 years of data on average for each site.

Here’s the important quote from Mc Kitrick and note this is using empirical evidence not the modelling used by RSS sat data.

“Until now. In their new paper Zou and his co-authors rebuilt the STAR series based on a new empirical method for removing time-of-day observation drift and a more stable method of merging satellite records. Now STAR agrees with the UAH series very closely — in fact it has a slightly smaller warming trend. The old STAR series had a mid-troposphere warming trend of 0.16 degrees Celsius per decade, but it’s now 0.09 degrees per decade, compared to 0.1 in UAH and 0.14 in RSS. For the troposphere as a whole they estimate a warming trend of 0.14 C/decade.

“Zou’s team notes that their findings “have strong implications for trends in climate model simulations and other observations” because the atmosphere has warmed at half the average rate predicted by climate models over the same period. They also note that their findings are “consistent with conclusions in McKitrick and Christy (2020),” namely that climate models have a pervasive global warming bias”.

The climate models are Not true models in the scientific sense; they’re merely an advertising gimmick that’s been disguised.

And it’s all to justify the myth of rapid tipping point runaway man made Global Warming. None of which is true. And after 35 years obviously wrong.

However you have to ask why Australia is so worried about deadly CO2 ’emissions’ when only 10% of the planet cares. That’s the US, Canada, UK, Europe. But not Africa, South America, India, China, Pakistan, Indonesia, SE Asia.

Behind it all is the BOM, rigging the data to keep the dream of Global Warming alive. And if they went rogue, control most of the historic temperature data.

Why is it that every Australian enterprise and political body so hell bent on shutting down Australia? Especially politicians. Why is the question of changing the constitution the biggest single issue facing the country. And who seriously believes we will build nuclear submarines in Adelaide? And the idea the government requires that private industry innovate or else what? Most manufacturing will just leave. And move their entire business overseas to avoid punitive carbon taxation. There is also the mindset that “it’s a computer so it must be right”. So given the choice of a nice digital figure or the difficulty of getting an accurate reading from a mercury thermometer, they choose the digital reading.
I remember once where we were all (6) trying to agree on a temperature from a thermometer. 5 results due to trying to estimate between the 2 lines. Parallax errors meant a range of 0.7℃. Curiously both my boss and me were the closest together, as we both had much experience.
These were -10 to 50℃ ones. I once tested a box of 10 new ones and found only 3 recorded the correct immersion temperature of 25℃ (within 0.1℃), and there were errors up to 0.7℃. I discarded the 3 worst ones but shortly after found them in use. When I pointed out their inaccuracy but was assured that “it didn’t matter as they were only for comparison”. I wrote off anything he did thereafter.

Most think that the core of a mercury thermometer is a set diameter, hence markings are made at equal distances from a known minimum (0 ℃) and a known maximum, say 100℃. This isn’t the case so for accurate readings you needed a Calibrated thermometer, normally longer but thinner core. These were much more expemsive and came with an individual set of errors at different points. They also had a short lifetime as the accuracy diminished with the years (about 2 or 3 years from memory) after which you shouldn’t use them. I have occasionally speculated that some public servant may have ordered the cheapest types “to save money”.

The Australian is being very careful with the comments for this article. I tried posting that this is tip of iceberg stuff. That there is also the subjects of the use of smaller Stevensons screes, dodgy homogenisation techniques plus urban heat island effect on many recording stations. Tut, tut, can’t say that, probably a little off topic- rejected.

The Editorial is very insistent. As the last sentence in the last paragraph says:

The Bureau of Meteorology is a public institution and the information it holds is the property of the public. Parallel data records should be made immediately available alongside all of the other data the bureau prides itself on making public. There should also be a proper, expert appraisal of what the information says, whether it has been collected as fully as it should have been, and whether the bureau is indeed following world’s best practice in the use of platinum resistance probes, as it says it is, despite World Meteorological Organisation advice to the contrary.

    From the BOM site:

In 2008 after a series of field trials and testing, Dostmann digital thermometers replaced the MiG inspection thermometers. As with each PRS, all Dostmann temperature probes are calibrated in the Bureau metrology laboratory to ensure
they provide temperature measurements within ±0.08 °C in laboratory conditions. After a yearly tour of duty in inspections, the Dostmanns are returned to the metrology laboratory for recalibration and verification.

While none of the temperature measurements resident in the climate database have an explicit uncertainty of measurement, the traceability chain back to the national temperature standards, and the processes used both in the Regional Instrument Centre (the current name of the metrology laboratory in the Bureau) and the field inspection process suggest that the likely 95% uncertainty of a single temperature measurement is of the order of 0.5°C.
This is estimated from a combination of the field tolerance and test process uncertainties.
The Bureau’s standards of temperature measurement have varied over the period of measurement since 1900. Uncertainties in the measurement of temperature in laboratory conditions have decreased slowly with time.

Unlike the MiG and AiG thermometers, automated processes developed in the late 1980s and the next two decades, enabled all PRS purchased for use to be checked prior to use in the field; to ensure they met manufacturing standards and provided readings within measurement tolerances of ±0.08°C over a temperature range from –10 to +55°C. If a PRS failed
to satisfy those tolerances, it was returned to the manufacturer for replacement. As they were also used for wet-bulb thermometry, the PRS were batch-tested to ensure the platinum-resistance element was located in the required position in the probe shaft.
The uncertainty of a PRS calibration for a fixed temperature, using the current systems within the metrology laboratory, is estimated to be 0.019°C. This is through the use of four absolute fixed point temperature standards, reference transfer based on the properties of materials, referenced PRTs and an highly stable oil bath. The fixed point and reference PRTs are check against the Australian temperature standards held by Australia’s National Measurement
Institute every five years. The latter initially proved problematic as the Bureau has identical primary standards to the National Measurement Institute.
While it is possible to provide a calibration certificate
for each probe with a likely 95% uncertainty of <0.02°C using either tabulated or polynomial coefficient corrections, no calibration data were used for field PRTs. Currently there is no method to incorporate these coefficients into the AWS for routine measurement process,as a fixed resistance to temperature conversion is part of the system firmware.

Apart from a move to platinum-resistance thermometry as the primary SAT measurement method in 1996, all other components of the measurement environment and instrument shelters are
based on measurement principles and practices from the start of the 20th century.
Since 1908, the Bureau has used the same field practices for SAT measurements, and since 1938, metrology standards have been available to achieve a likely stable 95%
uncertainty of 0.5°C for maximum and minimum temperatures across its network.
The stability has been provided by checking measurement tolerances, with a paper and lately computerised metadata system. Since 1938, the metrology and transfer standards related to national standards of measurement have improved by an order of magnitude.
The current SAT network uncertainty does not meet WMO guidelines for realisable uncertainty.
Improving the 95% uncertainty of SAT measurements to 0.2 °C will require significant changes in the way measurement traceability is performed in the Bureau.
The move to AWS measurements in the last two decades reduced the ability for daily redundancy checks, and increased the likelihood of missing data.
For continuity of future SAT time series redundant measurements at AWS are required. However, to do so would require a change in automated data collection processes, from the AWS to the final data archive.

With ANY measurement there is always an error of uncertainty. Doesn’t matter what you measure or how you make that measurement there will ALWAYS be an inherent error in that measurement.

If the BOM were being true to the science of measurement when they proclaim that it was the hottest day ever today, what is the uncertainly of that claim? IE plus or minus how much? Yes the reading can be plus or minus. So if they said the temp today was 37.5 Degrees and the error was +/- 0.5 then the temp could have actually been 38.0 or 37.0. But all the temps we read and hear about are treated as absolute values. You cannot have an absolute value when you measure something – there is always an error. Yeah you might improve the accuracy of your measurement to say 0.01 but you could still have an error of +/- 0.005

The BOM need to average their readings over a small amount of time, and not rely on spurious spikes, hot or cold! A slight gust of hot wind and suddenly the maxim is 1-2 degrees higher than the half hour readings. I’ve seen it happen every day on the BOM maximum readings for my local AWS. Half hours temps can be around 26.5 but the daily reported maxim is 27.2 and no where in that daily data is a temperature anywhere close to the reported maximum. I’ve never seen the reported daily maximum matching the daily half hour records, they come close and but always higher and they never ever align! Go look at your closest BOM weather station data with an AWS and you’ll see this

2013/14 and Dr Jennifer Marohasy wrote to the BoM Minister in the Abbott Coalition Government outlining concerns including BoM media releases not matching historical weather data, the Minister approached BoM management and they apparently replied blaming “errors and omissions” and promised that this would be rectified.

Prime Minister Abbott recommended an independent audit at the BoM to his Cabinet Ministers but a majority voted against.

In 2015 PM Abbott was replaced by PM Turnbull who is of course proudly a globalist and also a Liberal In Name Only or LINO left founder.

As I wrote about a decade ago, the (PTC Platinum) temperature sensing element can be extremely responsive. It’s tiny and has a very small thermal mass so it doesn’t take much to warm it up with a breath of air. Literally. Even the radiated heat from a hand within centimetres can cause a temperature rise to be measured.

This is vastly different to a traditional, liquid in glass thermometer where it takes several minutes to respond to a step-wise temperature change. Compared to milli-seconds for the PTC.

Years ago, BoM indicated that it would publish how the thermal characteristic equivalence was being achieved.

    Crickets.

A taxpayer-funded agency that purports to deliver scientifically-valuable results, but refuses reasonable scrutiny of the metrology and methodology cannot be trusted.

Bernd says.A decade or two ago.
      The university of Bohnn?
Germany University actually did the study, running mercury in glass alongside the new electronic sensors for 10 or 12 years..from memory.
I had it archived on a dead laptop.
      The results were damning.
Man Made global Warming was found.
Damn near no coverage by media.
      Showed up on WUWT.

And then the question of calibration..was totally ignored and brushed aside by every government weather recording agency..
Canada had sensors installed ,that had an accurate measuring range of 20Degrees C..

      In the high Arctic,in summer.
      -40C readings nearly vanished…
As these platinum resistor sensors were installed in the heat shadow of airport building (As they needed 120V power and short readout cables)
      Calibrated(if at all) to accurately measure a 20 degree range..In a land that ranges between -50 to +40 C.
Now that is science done by government.
      Good enough for government.
Way back I was able to look up the Platinum resistor sensor part number specified for this contract.
      Then download its specs..
Impossible to make this level of idiocy and incompetence up.
      Or so I thought.
      Then along came Dread Covid.

As Bernd says ,the response characteristics of the measuring systems are astounding.
Particularly the lag in sensing falling temperature inherent in mercury in glass.

      Timing really is everything.

In 1991 I innocently went into the BoM Lonsdale St HQ and started buying printouts of various stations T data trying to see “global warming” for myself.
With help from counter staff I quickly assembled near century long trends and generated the two temperature histories at –
    http://www.warwickhughes.com/1991/targw.htm
I was told by BoM people that the pre-1910 warmth was due to the use of open thermometer stands and that when BoM was formed in 1908 they introduced widespread use of the Stevenson screen as standard.
The BoM had a great library and I swotted up on the minutes of the Intercolonial Met. conferences where it was obvious that most of the Colonies were using the Stevenson screen to some extent in the 1800’s, that story is at –
    http://www.warwickhughes.com/papers/ozstev.htm
I also circulated a little paper around BoM showing examples of where it looked as though Aussie country towns T data were affected by UHI.
That was treated to the usual BoM pile-on.
Great to see in 2001 BoM published a paper showing they had caught up on evidence of UHI in very small villages.
    http://www.warwickhughes.com/climate/seozuhi.htm
Great to see Dr’s Marohasy and Abbott holding a blowtorch to the more despicable aspects of our BoM. But nobody should be put through what they have endured to get small batches of what should be freely available.
