What does “far right” even mean when it applies to a quarter of the population?

It means name-calling is embedded in our vocabulary. Geert Wilder’s party has won 37 seats in the Netherlands election with 24% of the vote — more than any other party. There are 150 seats in total in the Dutch Parliament, so it’s not clear what the final winning coalition will look like. What is clear is that environmentalists hate it:

If far-right applies to a quarter of the population, and the Greens appeal to a much smaller slice, it’s only fair they be called the extreme-left, yes?.
How many votes is it worth when a party is gifted a “label” by the media day in and day out. How many people would have voted for a “Centre Right” party who would not even consider “the far right”? It could be a 2 – 5% advantage right there.
Left leaning players cheat and deceive with language every day, and the Right let them get away with it.
We need to fight for our language, for consistent words.
So let’s mock the partisan reporters who keep calling the center Right, the far-right. “We know which way you vote”. Ask them to define their terms.

If it were only the Netherlands that would be bad enough, but most of the discontents and political trends that have propelled Wilders to victory are writ large across the EU.
Congratulations to Geert Wilders and his team, and to Javier Milei who won 56% of the vote in Argentina this week too. In the latter’s case, he’s not just “far right” but fully anti-science, according to Nature — the science journal that appears to think science is defined by government funding, not by evidence.

As part of his plan to address the country’s economic crisis, Javier Milei has promised to slash research funding and shut down key science agencies.

Milei and other members of his party, La Libertad Avanza (Liberty Advances), have pledged to shut down or possibly privatize the country’s main science agency, the National Scientific and Technical Research Council (CONICET), as well as to eliminate the ministries of health, science and the environment.
So 56% of Argentian voters are climate skeptics:

ALL the observed surface warming away from heat islands is due to natural processes that only involve CO2 in its contribution to biomass.
The surface of the Northern Hemisphere will continue to warm and likely at an accelerating rate. At present there are new snowfall records being set but there are very few places where permanent ice is actually expanding. Permafrost is still retreating north. The increase in solar intensity that is causing the warming only bottomed 500 years ago. The change so far is very small compared to what it will be when aphelion aligns with the boreal summer solstice.

Political Right and Left is more adequately understood for some in the length of time of an election cycle and what they did preparing in opposition.
The left has a clear focus of their social engineering and the bureaucracy already in place to take effect immediately they are elected, with zero interest in cost, debt or what those who didn’t vote for them see as fair and equitable.

I am Dutch so I hope I have a reasonable take on this. At least I can read Dutch news and opinions. Wilders has had a checkered past and has made firm statements regarding islam and muslims. Not all moderate, for sure. Wilders party, the PVV, has some colourful members, many of whom I much disagree.
Still, he managed to get 37 out a 150 seats in the Dutch parliament and with that he is the largest party, by far.
It’s a remarkable shift in the political landscape in the Netherlands. Post seventies, Dutch politics has been social democratic and centrist and shifting leftwards gradually. With the second period in government for Mark Rutte, the ousted prime minister, the shift towards the left has been significant. Originally, social democrats (the left) were the main representatives of the working class. But during the last decades, these parties have come to represent the elite and well-off. As we see in so many western countries, they care little for the needs of working class and their policies revealed this clearly: immigration without building the required infrastructure, heightened focus on climate change leading to huge spending of taxes, the childcare crisis, the nitrogen crisis (stikstof dossier), strong inflation, poor government response to covid, very high spending to support the war in Ukraine etc.
These are all themes known to Australia too, with the exception of the childcare and the nitrogen crises. I provide two links for further reading on these two highly disturbing yet interesting affairs.
all of this has caused a reversal in Dutch politics: the normally silent majority has spoken loudly and made it clear that they will not accept that the next Dutch government will proceed along the same lines. Another factor could well be the Israel/Gaza events, motivating more voters to vote for a party with an outspoken opinion in relation to migration.
At the moment, there appears to be a deadlock in government formation. It appears that the two main candidates (VVD, NSC) for a coalition are refusing to form government with the PVV. This could lead to the ‘other’ parties, the ones just ousted, to get an opportunity to form government. The critical press in the Netherlands suggest that this is a possibility and would possibly lead to new elections in a few month with possibly an even better outcome for the PVV. We shall see.
Wilders has much moderated his viewpoints over the last months, surely to increase his ability to form government and become prime minister. One should be critical about the ability of his party to bring forth sufficiently mature and responsible candidates. For a very long time, the PVV has been a single-topic party.
But, the voters have spoken loudly and clearly. Interesting times. We should keep our eye on what happens in the Netherlands in the months to come.

Just this morning I read in the Dutch press that the leader of the NSC, Pieter Omtzigt, is hesitant to even engage with the PVV to discuss government. Omtzigt is well known for his deep involvement and the bringing to light of the childcare scandal. My impression is that he is not a fast thinker and he struggles with decision making.
