Auroras being seen

UPDATE Friday:– For readers in darkness, there is currently a G4 geomagnetic storm. Satellites at L1 suggest a spike in density (SWEPAM) coming through in minutes (5.30pm WST 8.30pm EDT). See Glendale for live reports of where the action is. Graphs and discussion at SpaceWeatherlive. Nullschool-Space (a very low resolution, generic estimate) is as colorful as it gets. This post is temporarily bumped.

UPDATE: Thursday night! Post bumped up temporarily. For anyone awake and in darkness. An interplanetary shock wave is likely with auroras visible up to Canberra and Adelaide. Highest impact expected at  3:42 AM EDT Australia. London time 5:37 PM. (Sorry, Daylight savings time mix up.)

Just poke your head out the window….

Monday: That x9 CME arrived, proving that Big X flares don’t always release the big CME’s (coronal mass ejection). And sometimes small flares release big CME’s.

Sadly, at 11.50 PM Monday, I see nothing but overcast sky from my home in Hobart.

Same here in Novocastria, 4:30 am .
Seventy years ago we had great visits by the Aurora Australis but recently , nothing.

Whenever there is a report of some natural phenomenon, I always do a search for “X caused by (or influenced by) “climate change” “.

    And what do you know?

The Northern Lights: A Spectacular Display Influenced by Climate Change

The link between climate change and the Northern Lights is complex and not fully understood. The primary drivers—solar activity and Earth’s magnetic field—are influenced by factors beyond climate change. However, climate change can indirectly affect the Northern Lights by altering atmospheric and geomagnetic conditions. Ongoing research aims to unravel these interactions and predict how future climate changes might impact this mesmerizing phenomenon.

Is there anything that they don’t blame on supposed “climate change?

Climate Change is the Shmoo of scientific study. There are several parallels.

Indeed “CC did it” is the puerile over-generalisation of our era David.

Climate Change, aka “It’s the Sun!” but also our current terrestrial magnetic excursion which is weakening the planetary field strength and allowing more solar radiation to penetrate, especially at the poles. This is why those regions can warm a bit faster that the rest but unless we are heaving magnets into the stratosphere (erp, hopefully Bill Gates hasn’t thought of that yet…) man has little to do with this.

You know things are serious when there is a Carrington-like Event such as we had in 1859.

In Victoria, the effects of the solar disturbances on the telegraph system were also apparent. Samuel McGowan, the General Superintendent of Electric Telegraph, included an account of interruptions to telegraphic communication in his report to the Victorian Parliament in December 1859 . He stated: ‘Not the least interesting cause of the several interruptions was the Aurora Australis, as noted on 29th August and 2nd September last. The effect upon the wires was in many cases singular. At times prevailing atmospheric currents would entirely dissipate the artificial current and assume complete possession of the lines, baffling all attempts at rendering the communication available. Again the atmospheric currents would suddenly, entirely disappear; the lines would work perfectly, when in a moment the electromagnets would be quite deprived of their ordinary power , the conducting medium would be polarized in several opposite directions, within as many seconds, and the whole natural condition of the instruments would be instantly reversed, and as suddenly set right. On one occasion during this interesting disturbance of the natural elements, I communicated with, and received an acknowledgement from, a station distant 32 miles, through atmospheric currents alone, there being at the time no battery on the line. I may add that I witnessed similar effects about twelve years back, on a line of electric telegraph in Upper Canada during the presence of a magnificent Aurora Borealis in mid-winter.’

    Sun events = Earth events

eg CAT 5s and 6+ Earthquakes

I did look but with some general light coming from the direction of Melbourne no aurorae were obvious.

A strong geomagnetic storm is underway, the strongest in years. Will the zonal circulation strengthen? In my opinion, yes.
