UPDATE Friday: –– For readers in darkness, there is currently a G4 geomagnetic storm. Satellites at L1 suggest a spike in density (SWEPAM) coming through in minutes (5.30pm WST 8.30pm EDT). See Glendale for live reports of where the action is. Graphs and discussion at SpaceWeatherlive. Nullschool-Space (a very low resolution, generic estimate) is as colorful as it gets. This post is temporarily bumped.
UPDATE: Thursday night! Post bumped up temporarily. For anyone awake and in darkness. An interplanetary shock wave is likely with auroras visible up to Canberra and Adelaide. Highest impact expected at 3:42 AM EDT Australia. London time 5:37 PM. (Sorry, Daylight savings time mix up.)
Just poke your head out the window….
Monday: That x9 CME arrived, proving that Big X flares don’t always release the big CME’s (coronal mass ejection). And sometimes small flares release big CME’s.
Sadly, at 11.50 PM Monday, I see nothing but overcast sky from my home in Hobart.

Same here in Novocastria, 4:30 am .
Seventy years ago we had great visits by the Aurora Australis but recently , nothing.

Whenever there is a report of some natural phenomenon, I always do a search for “X caused by (or influenced by) “climate change” “.
And what do you know?
Is there anything that they don’t blame on supposed “climate change?

Climate Change is the Shmoo of scientific study. There are several parallels.

Indeed “CC did it” is the puerile over-generalisation of our era David.

Climate Change, aka “It’s the Sun!” but also our current terrestrial magnetic excursion which is weakening the planetary field strength and allowing more solar radiation to penetrate, especially at the poles. This is why those regions can warm a bit faster that the rest but unless we are heaving magnets into the stratosphere (erp, hopefully Bill Gates hasn’t thought of that yet…) man has little to do with this.

You know things are serious when there is a Carrington-like Event such as we had in 1859.

Sun events = Earth events
eg CAT 5s and 6+ Earthquakes

I did look but with some general light coming from the direction of Melbourne no aurorae were obvious.

The BoM’s auroral oval prediction tool affirms your observation.

A strong geomagnetic storm is underway, the strongest in years. Will the zonal circulation strengthen? In my opinion, yes.
