This is the first time I’ve seen a mainstream story on an unrelated topic where the writer assumes everyone understands how dodgy climate science is. Climatology is relegated to a joke.
For the sake of posterity, I wanted to capture this moment in the downfall of a once respected profession. Source, the Wall St Journal: Wikileaks R US
Private companies already offer solutions to protecting data systems. “Data-at-rest” and “data-in-motion” programs look for anomalies in emails and other data moving through networks or resting on hard drives. SIM (security information management) software tracks network intrusions. It’s pretty good, the way climatology is pretty good.
Ladies and gentlemen, its only a small sign, a crumb, but it’s revealing. When Daniel Henninger, deputy editor of the Wall St Journal, was looking for an example of something that doesn’t work well, he thought of climatology.
No one will suddenly announce the skeptics were right, instead we’ll get a steady stream of small advances that show that a more realistic assessment of the uncertainties involved in climate modeling have spread to the wider world.
Skeptics, pat yourselves on the back, thousands of comments left on blogs, thousands of hours spent trawling boring databases finding errors and inconsistencies… it is slowly getting through.
For those wondering about an update of Cancun from Monckton — see SPPI, From Nopenhagen to Yes We Cancun. Basically, the shell of the Great Global Warming Gravy Train still rolls on, though the track is looking circular, and the spectators have lost interest.
This maybe the release (in the sense of a virus, good or bad) of Climatology into the mainstream.
Climatology may now be starting it’s re-poisitioning alongside Alchemy and Astrology. There’s something in the dicipline (if you can call it that) but don’t tell me it has anything to do with anything we know as logic.
The conversation will go…
“Oh, your a Climatologist”?
“Yeh, actually Climate Scientist”
“Yeh, like I said, Climatologist”.
“Yeh, but we do science based research, and model projections”.
“Oh, you really beleive that do you”?
“Yeh”
“Heh, 🙂 you want me to read your palm, and find out your future? just like a Climatologist”
I would suggest from this point the removal of the word science from every reference to Climate Scientist. Climatologist is more befitting.
Climatology’s existence dependas on keeping the AGW m yth alive, and therefore the flow of funding. Labeling Climate Science as Climatology may just tarnish it a little.
“I’ll fund your Atmospheric research.”
“Oh, you mean Climatology”?
“NO. I’m not funding some Tarot card reader”!
Most who dispute the current “Climate Scientists”, Oops Sorry, Climatologists conclusions, come from other science disciplines. I hope. :-/

Thanks for the link Jo,
Monckton has a definite way with words…
“…..the European Union, whose crafty, crabwise coup d’etat over the last three or four decades…”
“….A multitude of long, inspissate, obfuscatory, obnubilating, obscurantist draft agreements are circulated….”
…and knowing that he is a devout Catholic, he must be allowed …
“……all in the name of Saving The Planet (which, of course, was triumphantly Saved 2000 years ago and does not need to be Saved again)….”
God bless him.

BTW h/t to WUWT who covered it first – but a paper is out showing just how bad climate models are – My link refers to my thoughts on the matter.

When communists had noticed their system was scrambling they came usually with some kind of perestroika. It could prolong their existence for some time. But if the perestroika had come too late it would bring about just the opposite effect working as a scrambling accelerator like the Gorby one. The warmists are very similar to communists so the analogy is relevant. I am happy I can see them missing their opportunity for perestroika in time.

After the National Australia Bank’s computer malfunction last week they might regard Climatology as being slightly above Security Information Management. Credit to NAB tho’, they have admited fault and after eventually answering the phone they returned my money.
I wish as much could be said for Climatology and the One World Warmistas in Cancon. It’s no joke and we need to make more ordinary folk aware that it’s all about “wealth redistribution” and nothing to do with climate or carbon dioxide.

The credibility of ALL scientists are in question now. Too many media reports of “scientists say…” has lumped the whole lot in together.
I find many scientists do believe their science in CO2 warming in scientfic testing, so automatically all other data is irrelevant.
The blinders are on to any suggestion of other factors and physical evidence that absolutely does not make sense to the AGW theory.

Darryl Hannah is CNN “Connector of the day” so I left the following question for her, which is still “in moderation”:
December 5th, 2010 3:06 am ET
Your comment is awaiting moderation.
If you were to become aware of information that totally discredited the deleterious role of CO2 in the environment, what would be your next endeavor to help correct the world’s woes?
Not there, quite yet, but soon.

Every journey starts with a single step.
The first step on the journey from climate alarmism to common sense was taken a year ago when the putative Copenhagen Treaty failed to become a reality.
The “casual aside” in the WSJ shows that journey has moved from struggle along a rough path to travel along a highway.
So, the AGW-scare will be forgotten by the end of this decade (as I have been saying since failure of the achievement of the Copenhagen Treaty).

PJB @7,
Darryl Hannah, Leonardo DiCaprio… What is it about Hollywood’s fantasy land that gives them all the wisdom of the gods? Do they drink it or do they smoke it? Before I go I’d like to have their certainty that I know everything, just for even a few minutes. Where can I get whatever they’re using?
Kidding aside — we can certainly rejoice in the progress! But I think it would be foolish to believe the dragon is dead just yet. We in the U.S. still have Obama for at least two more years. And he cares not a bit for the collapse of climatology. His answer to opposing views is to try to shut down their forum. The Senate has a bill under consideration that would make the FCC a virtual dictator over what can be broadcast, even on cable and what you can have access to on the Internet. They are calling this, “Net Neutrality.” But of course it really means only politically correct drivel will be available to the peons. I never thought my country could sink that low.

Heh. Only 10 years ago, my profession (IT/Software) was highly regarded and the broader community carried us around on their shoulders. To be a computer nerd was to be cool, because of dot com and the information revolution everyone was getting excited about. Then you all realised we were hoovering up all your hard earned wealth to feed our esoteric obsessions and hobbies and only occasionally providing anything of value in return. I was only a junior analyst/programmer working inside a big blue-chip at the time, so I cannot reflect back with fond nostalgia at that period of silliness; but I hear from others it was quite a ride: international conferences, big bucks, going to IT functions in Silicon valley where Spinal Tap and B52’s put on a live show. What a party, what a hangover.

A good sign, but still a way to go.

A casual aside in a headline in The Mail (uk) today:
Now scientists claim climate change could give you cancer (in the week Doomsday warning of rising sea levels was rubbished)

Well I’ll be a monkey’s uncle. What will they discover next? Maybe climate change also causes insanity? It certainly looks like it does.

wendy @17
They’re trying to do that here in the states too. Darkness can’t ever stand the light. They can’t win in the marketplace of ideas so they just close down the market.

Subject: IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT CANCUN – The abdication of the West – THIS MUST BE STOPPED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
THIS IS VITALLY IMPORTANT TO EVERYBODY WHO VALUES FREEDOM AND DEMOCRACY!!!!!!!!!!!!!
=============================
From The Viscount Monckton of Brenchley
Cancun, Mexico
I usually add some gentle humor to these reports. Not today. Read this and weep. Notwithstanding the carefully-orchestrated propaganda to the effect that nothing much will be decided at the UN climate conference here in Cancun, the decisions to be made here this week signal nothing less than the abdication of the West. The governing class in what was once proudly known as the Free World is silently, casually letting go of liberty, prosperity, and even democracy itself. No one in the mainstream media will tell you this, not so much because they do not see as because they do not bl**dy care.
The 33-page Note (FCCC/AWGLCA/2010/CRP.2) by the Chairman of the “Ad-Hoc Working Group on Long-Term Co-operative Action under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change”, entitled Possible elements of the outcome, reveals all. Or, rather, it reveals nothing, unless one understands what the complex, obscure jargon means. All UNFCCC documents at the Cancun conference, specifically including Possible elements of the outcome, are drafted with what is called “transparent impenetrability”. The intention is that the documents should not be understood, but that later we shall be told they were in the public domain all the time, so what are we complaining about?
Since the Chairman’s note is very long, I shall summarize the main points:
SORRY THE ARTICLE WAS TOO LONG TO POST IN ITS ENTIRETY.
READ THE REST HERE.
http://sppiblog.org/news/the-abdication-of-the-west
“……………………How can we, the people, defeat the UN Secretariat and keep the democracy we love? Simply by informing our elected representatives of the scope, ambition, and detail of what is in the Cancun agreement. The agreement will not be called a “Treaty”, because the Senate, particularly after the mid-term elections, will not pass it. But it can still be imposed upon us by the heavily Left-leaning Supreme Court, which no longer makes any pretence at judicial impartiality and may well decide, even if Congress does not, that the Cancun agreement shall stand part of US law on the ground that it is “customary international law”.
What to do? Send this blog posting to your legislators. It is their power, as well as yours, that is being taken away; their democracy, as well as yours, that will perish from the Earth unless this burgeoning nonsense is stopped.”
