Putin: Climate change doubters may not be so silly

What can I say?  Putin has the same scientific quals as Al Gore, but more polar bears. The Greenies should love him:

Sam Meredith | Geoff Cutmore

In an interview by CNBC at the International Arctic Forum in Arkhangelsk, Russia, Putin was asked about the rollback of environmental regulations from U.S. President Donald Trump‘s administration.

“Those people who are not in agreement with opponents (of climate change) may not be at all silly,” Putin replied via an interpreter.

With 10% of the Russian GDP dependent on the Arctic, he also said:

“Climate change brings in more favorable conditions and improves the economic potential of this region,”…

We can’t have that then.

Mr. Putin thinks skeptics are right,
To reject the fake warmist fight,
As a great waste of time,
When a mild Arctic clime,
Makes the future in every way bright.

How will those think tanks factor in the coincidence of the Congressional hearing of Curry, Christie, Mann and Pielke? I still fear the possibility that they have already achieved their ultimate aims, but if they haven’t then their days are surely numbered.

Daniel Yergin [ the Quest 2011] has Putin enrolled to d a Doctorate at the St Petersburg Mining Institute. So I guess he probably has some grounding in Geology & geological time/history, chemistry & genesis.

Yergin’s Pulitzer Prize winning masterpiece “The Prize (1990)” is well worth a read – it is about the history of the Oil Industry (1850’s – 1990). It is not a light read though – 885 pages full of “real facts” – so I guess the “Greenies” won’t read it as they prefer “idealistic fantasy tales”. No doubt Putin has read it and hopefully Trump as well. Obama would have quit a few pages in.

Agree King Geo —great book ,not just because of it’s details on the oil and gas industry but it helps explain a lot about the geopolitical issues of the middle east.

A copy of “The Lost Hegemon” by F William Engdahl or Big Oil & their Bankers by Dean Henderson are illuminating for anybody who wants a real wake up call.

Further, for anyone who has waded through the stuff from Kissinger & especially Brzezinski’s “Grand Chessboard”; pretty much everything which has happened since 911 is going to script.[ which raises a question in itself]

What we get from the MSM on AGW is the tip of the iceberg when it comes propaganda.

I am wading through Kissinger’s White House Years.
There is nothing sinister about it.
It explains why the US always allies with the weakest of its conflicted parties.
Nixon played the China card, now China is the big boy on the block, Trump may play the Russian card.
However Kissinger made it clear that the US needed to define the limits of its opponents land grabs, especially with the communists.
In negotiation they always saw appeasement as weakness and showed contempt.
There is a lot about Vietnam and the Soviet Union.
Trump is defining the limits in Europe by getting the Europeans to actually spend to defend themselves, as well as boosting his own military.
Kissinger was one of the first advisers to meet with the president after inauguration.

I guess some apocalypto will bring out the scare about methane in Siberia: http://news.nationalgeographic.com/2017/03/siberia-batagiaka-crater-climate-change/. But this time it can be harnessed for power. And an interesting dichotomy in the report, loss of trees/vegetation has enabled the permafrost to melt, but CO2 encourages growth of trees/vegetation. What to do? What to do?

TdeF on the previous thread posted a link to this very good talk by Prof Weiss presenting his published work where he deconvolutes temperature data into a power spectrum to reveal two dominant and well known cycles, the approximate 200 year De Vries cycle and the 65 year AMO/PDO (Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation and Pacific Decadal Oscillation).

The results are consistent with other work and also predict a significant global cooling consistent with the sun now entering a period of dormancy, starting now. Good luck planet earth managing this cooling with windmills.

Putin has made far more skeptical remarks in the past about AGW. I think he was trying very hard not to be provocative in this conference and did not want to detract from the main purpose of it. You can see him wiggling in his seat – obviously anxious to let off some steam but keen to keep his powder dry. 🙂

Russia’s Putin Says Global Warming Is ‘A Fraud’

Plenty of Russian scientists believe cooling is happening and Putin is surrounded by smart people who will keep him informed.

Remember that Putin was reluctant to endorse the Kyoto agreement until the EU came up with a huge incentive. As Russia’s contribution was to do nothing except rake in the money for “carbon credits” ( i.e. non emissions from closed factories etc.) it was an offer too good to refuse.

Note he is using ambiguous language while holding out the hope that Russia will join the Paris Accord – providing the right terms are available. In other words he has summed up the EU bureaucrats as stupid and profligate with the serfs money, so he is holding out for more moolah. Should the climate turn cooler over the next 2-3 years and the EU not come up with lots of folding ‘incentive’ then there will be another country ignoring the Paris Accord.

And in the unlikely case that there are signs of global warming it will be good for Russia with better crop yields and more land area opened up for oil and gas production.

first, if anyone is in touch with Marc Morano, please ask him to explain to Alex Jones next time he is on Infowars that Russia DID NOT HACK THE CLIMATEGATE EMAILS. sadly, Alex repeats this claim regularly and claims Russia has admitted it did so!

because of the ridiculous “Russia hacked DNC emails” allegations, Alex has said this many times in recent weeks – by way of saying Russia didn’t hack the Democrats, but they did hack the Climategate emails and admitted it.

30 Mar: Phys.org: AFP: Putin says climate change not caused by emissions
Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday said climate change was unstoppable and not caused by human activity and urged countries to adapt to global warming.
One day after he visited the Franz Josef Land archipelago in the Arctic, Putin claimed that icebergs had been melting for decades and suggested that global warming was not mankind’s fault.
“The warming, it had already started by the 1930s,” Putin said in comments broadcast from an Arctic forum held in the northern Russian city of Arkhangelsk.
“That’s when there were no such anthropological factors, such emissions, and the warming had already started.”

It may have been lost in translation, what he meant is that global warming is good but unfortunately its not caused by humans.

30 Mar: SouthChinaMorningPost: AFP: Like Trump, Vladimir Putin says climate change not man-made and warming began in the 1930s
Russian leader Vladimir Putin on Thursday said climate change was not caused by human activity, as the White House announced that President Donald Trump would decide by May on continued US participation in the landmark Paris Agreement limiting global carbon emissions…

The Kremlin strongman added: “The issue is not stopping it… because that’s impossible, since it could be tied to some global cycles on Earth or even of planetary significance. The issue is to somehow adapt to it.”…
The declaration came as the White House said Trump would make his pronouncement on the Paris Agreement before a meeting of G7 leaders in Sicily that is scheduled to begin May 26…

Putin had previously hailed global warming for exposing natural resources and transport routes which had long been too expensive to exploit.
He had also once speculated that warming by “two or three degrees” could be a good thing for Russians who would no longer need fur coats…

???Russia is warming at twice the rate of the rest of the world, according to government data, and both scientists and emergencies officials have indicated that disasters such as deadly floods and wildfires are influenced by climate change.

keep in mind Paris is a great deal for Russia…and consider adaptation, not mitigation, is being emphasised:

31 Mar: Sputnik News: Putin ‘Would Not Dramatize’ Trump’s Attitude to Environmental Issues
ARKHANGELSK, (Sputnik) — Addressing US President Donald Trump’s executive order signed this week nullifying his predecessor’s initiative to reduce carbon pollution, Putin recalled compromise reached with another environmental skeptic, ex-President George W. Bush.
“I think this will happen here as well. I would not dramatize anything, I would not use these important for all mankind issues for the domestic political struggle in the US,” Putin said…
“I think we need to talk about not concern, but about finding compromises,” Putin said at the forum’s plenary session in northwestern Russia.

Russia intends to continue complying with the 2015 Paris Agreement on climate change, Putin said…
“Russia too intends to do this, just like we complied with the Kyoto Protocol,” Putin said following up on Finnish President Sauli Niinisto’s commitment to the pact ratified by more than 100 countries…
Putin echoed Niinisto’s assertion that global warming would still continue despite the countries’ commitment to the Paris Agreement.

28 Mar: Australian: Maurice Newman: The ever-receding mirage of cheap renewables just faded from view
On June 30, after 12 years of “advancing climate change solutions”, the Climate Institute is closing its doors, a victim of the “I’ll ride with you but won’t pay” industry…

On March 31, the Hazelwood coal-fired power station, which generates 25 per cent of Victoria’s electricity, is scheduled to close, leaving Victorians precariously dependent on unreliable renewable energy and unpredictable surpluses from neighbouring states.
This should be enough to seal the fate of the energy-intensive Portland aluminium smelter, already facing closure from power interruptions and rising power prices. Along with Point Henry and Kurri Kurri and, probably the struggling Boyne Island smelter, (also a victim of increasing power costs), Australia’s six smelters are likely to become two, with 14,000 direct jobs lost in the process.
The Climate Institute had a hand in the destruction of these CO2 emitters and consequent job losses…

Household bills have doubled in a decade. Yet the institute claims that “three-quarters (of those it polled) see economic benefits owing (sic) from leadership on climate change and energy policy, including new jobs and investment in clean energy”.
Really? Who did it poll? Evidently South Australian Premier Jay Weatherill was one…

Unlike Weatherill, the European Commission is waking up to the unhappy macro-economic effects of renewable energy, particularly on manufacturing and job creation. Accordingly, ageing European coal generators are receiving increased taxpayer subsidies, disguised as “capacity payments”. Germany is building 12 new plants. And, according to The Guardian, there is a likelihood that priority dispatch for clean energy will be scrapped from the EU’s 2020 renewable energy directive…

Add to this the likely withdrawal of the US from the Paris climate agreement, China playing to the crowd but with no commitment until 2030, India’s caveat that signing was “in the context” of its development agenda, and you quickly realise that Paris was always a “good faith”, not a legally binding, exercise…
    Scientists fret about this…

Sadly, deception has been a feature of climate science. We’ve had Climategate 1 and 2, Himalayagate, Amazongate and “homogenised” temperature records where key algorithms are withheld. We’ve had false claims of scientific consensus. It seems this duplicitous culture is deeply embedded.
The political class, attracted by the authoritarian potential of climate change and, with rent-seeker encouragement, has long ignored this evidence…

But lately the world’s largest emitters are finding that the laws of the market are more reliable than climate science and renewable energy…Karel Beckmann, editor of European Energy Review, estimates, worldwide, 1500 coal-fired generating plants are under construction or are in the planning stage. Japan has 45…

In Australia it’s a pipe dream. Rather than embrace cheap coal, better we resort to nostalgic, uncosted, inadequate Snowy Hydro solutions. See South Australia and you glimpse our future. The Climate Institute’s job is largely done.

First, where does the electricity come from that governments, federal and state, have promised for Alcoa’s aluminium smelter in Portland?

Secondly, has anyone credible polled South Australians regarding electricity generation? With what results? For it is my impression that the public has largely excused government for its failures of policy and practice. Incredible as it may seem, there is a notion abroad that government meant well in its pursuit of wind power.

The same people that make up the government of South Australia, who have wrecked schooling at all levels in that state, who preside over an imploding hospital system, also claim the expertise to run some art of the nuclear fuel cycle. Risible, but there you are. They wave dollar signs in front of a gullible electorate and power remains with them. Unremarkable, really, in a de facto one-party state where there is no meaningful opposition.

Putin’s background, in a very general sense, is pertinent here. The Bolsheviks, following the coup of October 1917, subsequently removed the top two or three layers of the imperial bureaucracy, but no more than that. An opposition, should it manage to win office in the wake of successive Labor governments, would need to be prepared to follow some similar practice. Otherwise little would change.

      40

      • #
        Graeme No.3

According to a recent poll 51% thought that the privatisation of electricity in 1998 was a major factor in the problem. I have no idea what the question was or how leading it was, but it is still a sore point in SA. Never mind that it was forced onto the Liberal government as they tried to pull the State out of the mess left by the previous long spell of Labor mismanagement.

The Advertiser today (April 1) has an article on the electricity crisis, basically saying that neither party can do anything. They doubt that Labor will have its new (costly insurance) power station ready until late 2018 (after the election) and indeed suggested that it might never be built. Nor that Turnbull’s Snowy scheme will be ready for years.

Curiously I note that Power Engineering Int. think the new gas fired station would cost $530 million, rather more than the $350 million announced by the Premier.

Putin and Climate Change? Rubbish. He does not believe a word of this Western gibberish. However he could not resist implied support for a cult which is crippling Western economies. The fact that he does not believe it is transparent in the use of a double negative as an implied yes. This does not work in other languages. No and no in French and even Russian can just mean no, not yes. Clever.
You even have to read his translated statement carefully just to discern a meaning.

So he is just having fun at our expense while we shut down coal power stations and put in silly windmills while he sells vast amounts of gas and oil and relies on nuclear power. The entire Trans Siberian railway, up to 8 tracks wide is an electric train system and not run on Windmills or solar.

Sort of says it all about politics these days , no real difference between the two major parties , just a race to outgreen the greens and outspend each other on a myth about global warming .
To become a politician you must have to pass some test that requires you to answer a yes or no question in 100 words or more and vaguely touch on the topic .

Some people wonder what’s the real difference between the two major parties. Some say a little, I say none. Turnbull is a leftist working on the inside of the Libs to destroy it and what it used to stand for and instead instigate socialism – same goal as that of the ALP+Greens. The Liberal and National Party ministers are by and large duped into the same mind set. Turnbull is actually a very clever man – he must have learned a lot of the tricks when he was at Goldman Sachs. He almost achieved his goal at the last election. He will achieve it at the next election. Let’s see how long before the public wake up and realise both major parties are on the same road to the destruction of our once great nation. When the crash and burn scenario plays out, and it now must since we have past the point of no return some time ago not just in terms of the exploding national debt but also our weakening economy and crumbling infrastructure, what comes out of the ashes will have a totally different and far better mind set towards the future of the nation. The cycle repeats yet again. History is proof this is the way it always plays out.

Turnbull hates the Liberals and his family was solid Labor. Neville Wran was a frequent visitor. His mother’s uncle was the leader of the UK Labor party in the 1930s and like Turnbull very anti military, as if that wasn’t obvious. Turnbull, like Rudd was too rich for Labor. The Unions simply used Rudd to win an election and disposed of him, putting in their puppet. From what I have read Malcolm openly detests the Nationals. His real affection is with the Greens and it is obvious he dreamed of an all conquering Liberal Green alliance, destroying both Labor and the Nationals and the conservatives in the Liberal party.

Now he is one seat Malcolm, unable to pass laws and with no idea what to do next. Like Hilary, he has the full support of the press and the public service and the Unions and Universities but no one else. If Daniel Andrews was not even more detested, his $1.75Million would not have bought him his one seat majority.

The only one who has made consistent sense, the only adult in the room is Tony Abbott. He has been wrong on some things. Most importantly he now recognizes the evil that is the RET and wants it repealed. He wants 18C repealed, the HRC disbanded and the ABC/SBS brought to heel. He wants an end to the river of money overseas which is the RET carbon tax.

Malcolm must be shoring up support in the party room, desperate to get Abbott deselected in his own electorate as Nikki Savva prays he will be. They all know if Tony Abbott can win in the party room, it is goodbye Malcolm, goodbye RET, goodbye windmills and hello cheap ample coal power, coal exports and ample gas for Australia.

Weatherill and Andrews and friends can just stop talking about spending billions solving problems for which they are responsible. As Margaret Thatcher said, the government doesn’t have any money. They only have your money on the basis that they can spend it more wisely than you can and she doubt’s that.

If Savva gets her way, and the Libs deny TA preselection, he is very likely to win Warringah as an indie, or, better still, as a candidate for Bernardi’s party. He is quite popular on the Northern Beaches. Then what would they do?

Denying TA preselection would be the worst thing they could do. Mark Textor’s Delcons would NEVER come back. Malcolm would do well to remember that Andrews won’t be having another CFA moment next time.

It’s probably moot anyway, as I doubt Malcolm will still be there at preselection time. The farce surrounding the China extradition treaty and the Hazelwood closure should see his SMS2 Newspoll bump disappear. The Government has the appearance of the ball in a pinbal machine, always reacting, with no control over it’s destiny.

I thought it impossible that there could be a worse PM than Gillard. Fail.

I have no idea really about politics in Australia – only been here 7 years – and was never really interested.

However, when Malcolm Turnbull started messing about with the NBN, I realized that he was a thoroughly nasty narcissist lawyer who could not resist putting a spoke in what his predecessors had arranged. So childish – and so typical of a psychopath.

It’s easy. There are 150 Members. Around 146 of them are self interested narcissists, and the other four may have some principles. Then there’s the Senate. Nobody understands the Senate apart from Glenn Druery, AKA the Senate Whisperer. It’s hard to imagine someone who learned to game the system better than he did. Jacqui Lambie is one of the results he has ‘achieved’. There is little more to be said on that subject. Except, of course, that the entire system has become corrupted, but, hey, we’re not unique there.

Best to NOT understand it, really. When you take it at face value, particularly recently, it is only a recipe for depression. I’m now off to have a browse of my copy of “Trigger Warning”. Bill Leak still has the capacity to make me laugh, even if I have seen them before, and the laugh is posthumous. Err, him, not me…… obviously.

What do you expect from a sell out in charge of energy and anti energy !

If he was genuine he would have refused to head a portfolio under the name of energy and the envrionment….a ministry of ambush this greedily ambitious politician walked straight into.

One of his quotes ‘Vote for us, because at least we’re not as bad as labor’s 50%’

Being 46% in favor of the ALP’s ‘Intermittent toy energy scam’, with their own 23% RET still makes them complicit in it.
If you vote for a global warmer, then you vote for a scammer.
The RET should be abolished, and any that propagate for it at more than Zero% are traitorous to this nation.

“Those people who are not in agreement with opponents (of climate change) may not be at all silly,”

    I think I need an interpreter…..

Isn’t he saying climate change supporters may not be silly?

I recently watched a doco which outlined some of the ups and downs of climate over the last few thousand years, but talked more specifically about the LIA.

Such climate events as the ones which ended the Old Kingdom (2200 BC) and just about everyone’s kingdom (1200 BC) were supposed to be a lesson and warning to us about…our emissions! Yep, seems we might shut down the thermohaline circulation, so our naughty warminess will turn to cooliness. Nature used to do it, but must have retired. Now we do it.

On the other hand, if you were one of the lucky folk who can draw screamingly obvious conclusions from Natural History you might want to grab some Ukrainian wheat-belt and a warm water port or two.

““Those people who are not in agreement with opponents (of climate change) may not be at all silly,” Putin replied via an interpreter.”
What is he actually saying? Is it “Those people who agree with supporters of climate change may be smart”? It looks like that to me. Maybe something lost in translation.

Yes. The double negative with the bracketed ‘of climate change’ leaves me wondering whether the true meaning has been completely lost in translation. I think we can confidently deduce that we really don’t have a clue what Putin actually said or meant!

Putin’s been misinterpreted. I just showed it to my Russian friend. He said “People who are not in agreement with THEIR opponents. That is, sceptics who disagree with their ideological opponents…

Macspee comment #10 mentioned Putin possibly said “proponents”.
    Michael comment #22 clarifies further.

in case u can’t watch video at jo’s link (which i couldn’t), watch it here.

Putin says clearly he agrees with those who believe warming could be caused by global cycles or greater outer space cycles. “it’s about how we adjust to that”…
also, i am not sure the interpreter didn’t say “those people who are not in agreement with PROPONENTS may not be at all silly”…or there’s a possibility that Putin may have said “PROPONENTS” and he was interpreted incorrectly.
however, his meaning is very clear:

‘Asked by moderator Geoff Cutmore of the CNBC what he thinks of the appointment of Pruitt, a climate sceptic who wants to roll back Washington’s participation in the Paris climate accord, Putin said Pruitt’s views deserve to be heard.

“Positions and suggestions of those who don’t agree with their opponents are not so stupid,” Putin said. “God grant him health and success, everybody should listen to one another and only then you can find an optimal solution to the problem.”

Those people who are not in agreement with opponents (of climate change) may not be at all silly,” Putin replied via an interpreter.

Removing the double negative, we have:

Those people who are in agreement with proponents (of climate change) may not be at all silly,” Putin replied via an interpreter.

Which is the opposite of what you state here.

I remember when world leaders came to Northern Ireland not too long ago, the “local media” were all about President Obama and glorifying him, I noticed President Putin as a politician was not given the same glorification. That’s when I started liking the guy, he was respectful and most importantly he was mindful of the situation, that reflects on a persons character very well no matter who it is, in my own personal opinion.

When Yahoo News puts up a totally Fake Headline – Residents warned to get out while they can as ‘flood of the century’ to hit Rockhampton this week

Tim Flannery “It will Never Rain in Australia” – Eat your Heart Out :-

Residents warned to get out while they can as ‘flood of the century’ to hit Rockhampton this week

The flood is expected to reach levels last seen in 1954
and emergency services have asked locals to be prepared and get ready.

Tuesday is predicted to see the worst of the floods and locals have been warned they will be fined if they use jet skis or speed boats during the peak.

Have look at the photo of the 1954 Flood Level then look at how high above that was the 1918 Level

So the Yahoo Headline is Totally False, 1918 is within a Century Ago

Even if Vladimir Putin rightfully says that doubters of anthropogenic climate change may not be that silly, his rhetoric can only be described as one thing: lip service.

The enemy of my enemy is NOT my friend.
