Sea level hyperbole: CSIRO, BOM, ABC and Kiribati President should apologize for wasting our time

Minister Peter Dutton made a joke about Pacific Islander time. The Offendotrons howled and called for him to be sacked. But the real problem here is not the small 1mm rise in sea-levels, it’s the the national media end up discussing global “offense” levels rather than sea levels. The scientific data shows there is no issue. Australian taxpayers pay the ABC, the CSIRO and the BOM to inform the Australian public, yet none of them explained that the real sea level rise recorded in Kiribati is less than 1 mm a year. Why not?  The ABC does not clear the fog for Australians, it generates it. Dutton apologized, but he shouldn’t have. It feeds the offendotrons. They didn’t accept it, won’t stop referring to his comment, nor start talking about real problems. Apologizing only extends the time our national conversation is wasted on mindless things.

Yet again, the unfunded bloggers report the scientific data and not the institutes we pay to do that?

Noting that today’s meeting to discuss the resettlement of refugees was running late, Mr Dutton quipped that it was running to “Cape York time”, to which the Prime Minister replied: “We had a bit of that up in Port Moresby.”

Mr Dutton riposted: “Time doesn’t mean anything when you’re about to have water lapping at your door.”

The president of Kiribati has since called the joke “vulgar” and “quite unbecoming of leadership”.

The president of Kiribati has lashed out at Immigration Minister Peter Dutton, labelling him morally irresponsible for making a “vulgar” joke about rising sea levels in the Pacific.

Responding more in “sadness” than anger, Anote Tong said Mr Dutton has “got to search his own soul”.

“What kind of a person is he? As long as there is this kind of attitude, this kind of arrogance in any position of leadership, we will continue to have a lot of tension,” he said.

But what’s unbecoming of a leader is panicking his own people about a 1mm sea level rise, which appears to have little to do with CO2. What’s vulgar is people demanding money for a threat that barely exists. The people who need to “search their souls” are the scientists at the CSIRO and BOM, who are supposed to serve the Australian public and their elected leaders and who know the tide gauges don’t support the scare — but these scientists say nothing.

Australian foreign aid to Kiribati is $27 million for 2015/16 (which is equivalent to 15% of nominal GDP, for its population of 103,000 people).  Are they grateful?

Did the Pacific Islanders who were late apologize?

Sea levels are rising at a very unscary 1mm a year

According to 1000 tide gauges, globally, sea levels are rising slowly at around 1mm a year. The rise started long before human CO2 output increased, and there is no sign of acceleration with rapidly increasing human emissions of CO2. Careful analysis of 60 beaches in Northern Europe to find one of the most stable gauges in the world agrees.  The Topex/Poseidon satellite sea-level data set also showed similar rates until they were adjusted up to fit climate models (or one sinking gauge in Hong Kong). Likewise the Envisat sea-level satellite data was also adjusted up. Vincent Gray graphed sea level around many South Pacific Islands. There is no CO2 induced disaster.

According to Kiribati long term sea level rise data is available from the Permanent Service for Mean Sea Level. Eyes On Browne, has graphed the five original datasets from Kiribati tide gauges going back to 1949 showing a long term trend of 0.8mm, which is similar to the global sea level rise shown by all the other gauges.

Kiribati Sea Level, Tide gauges, South Pacific.

The NOAA mean sea levels of Kanton Island Kiribati shows 0.6mm/ year rise from 1949 -2007 (PSMSL).

The Australian government cut its foreign aid budget recently and funneled more money to the UN climate program instead. The Pacific Islanders would  probably get more from  Australia if the money came direct from our government, rather than being filtered through more layers of bureaucrats.

You can’t really blame the islanders for this, they just want to be on the gravy train like everyone else, so they have to show deep and troubling concern over these things to be seen as good warming worriers.

Its nice to see that the DATA, the “ACTUAL PYHSICAL MEASUREMENTS” prove there is minimal evidence of SLR in Kiribati and that this SLR dose not correlate with CAGW.

Just 1 thing to confirm:- Scientific data (UNAJUSTED!) to confirm there is no subsidence or rising of the land mass.

As professionals, we should always start from a confirmed BASE LINE!!
      🙂 🙂

Perhaps EVERYONE should ask the Kiribati President if he was IGNORANT (poorly informed) of the ACTUAL tide data for his islands or was HE on the CAGW bandwagon for as much of the gravy as he could get!!

Apologies if this runs twice, but something went astray with the first post.

      You are right bemused.
It always makes me laugh when I see the Maldive Islands being held up as the “poster child” for the sea level issue. On the one hand their leaders are milking AGW for all it is worth but on the other they are extending airports and building new expensive tourist resort hotels etc.

Ross, The Maldives appear more than a poster child for a variety of ‘climate related’ issues it seems, or at least according to The Independent in London today.

Whether by the UN or by their alter ego, the Maldivian populous must be considered a fairly receptive bunch.

Who do you blame, then? If the islanders are crying out for income redistribution, seems to me they are guilty. Wanting money from the gravy train is wrong no matter who does it. Taking from producers and giving to the non-producing is wrong. Asking for that to be done is wrong.

Darwin recognised that coral islands experience sedimentary aggradation in response to rising sea levels and, as a consequence, do not fall below sea level way back in the 19th century. This has been an acknowledged scientific fact ever since then. If anybody doubts it, just go and read a standard geological textbook. This unlearning of good, valid scientific knowledge is a disgrace!

This non issue is a case in point as to why Tony Abbott has to go and the government needs to grow a spine. Any mildly competent government would have laughed off this criticism, and told the critics where to insert it. Instead, this bunch of duds apologise and beg to be forgiven.
However, The Manchurian Candidate Turnbull has just announced his coup.
While it is true that Tony Abbott has to go, replacing him with Turnbull will be the equivalent of replacing Tweedle Dee with Tweedle Dum.
Have I mentioned that we are screwed?

Malcolm Turnbull has challenged Prime Minister Tony Abbott for the Liberal Party leadership.

4.59pm: Tony Abbott is expected to contest a leadership ballot following Malcolm Turnbull’s challenge, Dennis Shanahan reports.

The Prime Minister is expected to make his position clear soon after meeting with with staunch supporters such as Kevin Andrews, Eric Abetz and Mathias Corman.

Some of Mr Abbott’s supporters believe, despite the claims of Mr Turnbull’s supporters, that there has not been a great deal of change in his support.

4.58pm: Jeff Kennett has taken a savage swipe at Malcolm Turnbull, accusing the leadership aspirant of being selfish and undisciplined.

Using his twitter account, Mr Kennett today likened Mr Turnbull to former Labor prime minister Kevin Rudd and of ignoring the government’s successes.

“Malcolm Turnbull, You self centered, selfish individual. It has always been about you,’’ he tweeted.

“You selfish undisciplined individual. If you win the spill you lose. You have ignored the Govts (sic) wins and put your own interests above all.’’

The tirade was delivered over three tweets and sparked a swift response on social media, both for and against Mr Kennett’s sentiments.

4.55pm: Prime Minister Tony Abbott is holding a media conference shortly, Sky News reports.

4.32pm: Malcolm Turnbull has challenged Tony Abbott for the Liberal leadership, promising “advocacy, not slogans” and a leadership that “respects the people’s intelligence” if he succeeds the Prime Minister.

Sky News says a ballot could happen tomorrow morning.

Dennis Shanahan says that by challenging Mr Abbott now, Turnbull has ‘gone for the jugular’

4.12pm: Promising “a new style of leadership”, Mr Turnbull, who has resigned as Communications Minister, said Mr Abbott’s continued leadership would see the “catastrophically reckless” Bill Shorten elected as prime minister.

“This course of action has been urged on me by many people over a long period of time. It is clear enough that the government is not successful in providing the economic leadership that we need.

“It is not the fault of individual ministers. Ultimately, the Prime Minister has not been capable of providing the economic leadership our nation needs. He has not been capable of providing the economic confidence that business needs.”

Mr Turnbull said the country faced enormous economic challenges.

“We need a different style of leadership. We need a style of leadership that explains those challenges and opportunities, explains the challenges and how to seize the opportunities – a style of leadership that respects the people’s intelligence, that explains these complex issues and then sets out the course of action we believe we should take and makes a case for it.

“We need advocacy, not slogans. We need to respect the intelligence of the Australian people.”

Turnbull’s move risks the Liberal Party’s future, Dennis Shanahan writes

Malcolm Turnbull holds a press conference at Parliament House in Canberra, announcing his challenge to Tony Abbott.

“This is not a decision that anyone could take lightly.”

Mr Turnbull said he made the decision after consulting with party colleagues and many Liberal supporters in every walk of life.

“It is clear enough that the government is not successful in providing the economic leadership that we need,” he said.

Mr Turnbull said it was clear that the Abbott government would be trounced at a general election.

“The one thing that is clear about our current situation is the trajectory. We have lost 30 Newspolls in a row. It is clear that the people have made up their mind about Mr Abbott’s leadership,” he said.

“We are maybe 10 months, 11 months away from the next election. Every month lost is a month of lost opportunities. We have to make a change for our country’s sake, for the government’s sake, for the party’s sake.”

Mr Turnbull also called for a return to “open government” that recognises the wisdom of MPs and the broader public.

“We need to restore traditional Cabinet government; there must be an end to policy on the run and captain’s calls,” he said.

“John Howard’s government most of us served in, and yet few would say that the cabinet government of Mr Abbott bears any similarity to the style of Mr Howard.

“Our party, the Liberal Party, has the right values … of free enterprise, of individual initiative, of freedom; this is what you need to be a successful agile economy in 2015.”

The Aussie dollar has fallen to its lowest levels of the day following Mr Turnbull’s leadership move against the Prime Minister, dropping from US70.91 to US70.60c in less than an hour after the news of the leadership spill broke.

Earlier this morning the currency peaked at US71.36c, its highest level since September 1.

4.08pm: Malcolm Turnbull and Julie Bishop have joined forces to ask Tony Abbott to call a meeting of the Liberal Party as soon as possible to decide his fate, telling him he has lost the confidence of the party room.

Ms Bishop approached the Prime Minister before Question Time to tell him that he no longer had the support of their Liberal colleagues.

“A little while ago I met with the prime minister and advised him that I would be challenging him for the leadership of the Liberal Party,” he told reporters at Parliament House today.

Mr Turnbull approached Mr Abbott as both left Question Time to relay a similar message – and ask that a meeting be called to settle the matter.

One minister who supports Mr Turnbull told The Australian there was a “high probability” of change if and when a vote was arranged.

A key factor has been the decision of the Foreign Minister to take the concerns of the backbench directly to Mr Abbott.

The Australian was told that Social Services Minister Scott Morrison has not joined his two colleagues in taking this message to Mr Abbott, but is not standing in the way.

Mr Turnbull has asked Mr Abbott to call a meeting but the timing is up to the Prime Minister, with no announcement on when it might be.

A letter is being prepared for MPs to demand a meeting if Mr Abbott is reluctant to call a meeting.

    Leadership speculation

Tony Abbott intends to submit his leadership for “the judgment of the people” at an election, rather than by his colleagues in what he termed the “Canberra game”.

The Prime Minister is being urged to stare down his enemies in a looming leadership battle as MPs shift their support towards Malcolm Turnbull and prepare the ground for a spill motion within weeks to decide Mr Abbott’s fate.

Mr Abbott’s allies have warned him against “taking the bait” and forcing a crisis after days of growing agitation against him ahead of the resumption of parliament today and a meeting of the full ministry in Canberra tonight.

But some ministers believe a move to replace Mr Abbott is “absolutely inevitable” because he has failed to deliver on a pledge to colleagues in February to restore the government’s fortunes within six months.

Mr Abbott, speaking in Adelaide today, said he refused to become “caught up in Canberra gossip”.

“I know that sometimes the media particularly like to play the Canberra game but I’m not going to get involved in it,” the Prime Minister said.

“My job is to do what the public elected me to do two years ago, and that is to govern effectively every day for three years and then submit myself to the judgment of the people.

“But I expect that the government will go to the middle of next year and maybe a bit beyond because that’s what we were elected to do three years ago.”

Asked if he was worried about the Liberals’ prospects in South Australia, Mr Abbott said: “I’m worried about being the best possible Prime Minister.”

Leadership spill? What the politicians have said today

Treasurer Joe Hockey said he “always has, always will” support the Prime Minister, whom he described as “the most selfless and dedicated person I have met in politics”.

“We go back a long way and I know Tony Abbott is absolutely dedicated to the best interests of the nation. I have absolutely no doubt about that,” Mr Hockey told Melbourne radio station 3AW.

Dumped speaker Bronwyn Bishop has declined to endorse Tony Abbott as leader, saying she believes there is “enough speculation as it is” surrounding his position.

Asked several times whether the Prime Minister retained her support, Ms Bishop said she would not add to the commentary.

“I think there is enough commentary around without me adding to anything,” she said.

Social Services Minister Scott Morrison said this morning he had “no idea” if a leadership challenge was inevitable.

He also declined to join calls for rival Malcolm Turnbull to rule out a challenge for the leadership position.

“They are matters for him, I am not here to commentate on what others should do, I am focused on the job that I am doing and supporting a government that is doing a great job for Australia,” he said.

Assistant Immigration Minister Michaelia Cash said she would not comment on the current round of destabilisation, saying: “I support the leader”.

“I am not going to engage in leadership speculation,” she said.

West Australian Liberal MP Dennis Jensen, who backed February’s spill against Mr Abbott, said the leadership rumblings were “media speculation”.

Liberal whip Andrew Nikolic last Friday sent a text message to Mr Turnbull demanding he publicly declare support for the Prime Minister’s leadership.

Finance Minister Mathias Cormann, asked if Mr Turnbull should publicly pledge support for Mr Abbott, described the Communications Minister as a “highly valued senior colleague”.

“I’m not going to give advice to any of my colleagues through the media,” Senator Cormann told ABC Radio.

“All of us — we are professional politicians — all of us know what we need to do in order to do our job to the best of our ability.

“As far as I’m concerned, Tony Abbott enjoys the strong and overwhelming support of the party room.”

Bill Shorten said the instability proved the “terrible dysfunction at the heart” of the government.

“It’s not which salesman the Liberal Party pick that matters to Australia, it’s what they’re trying to sell Australians,” the Opposition Leader said.

“Growth is down, unemployment is up, confidence is down and all we see is this ugly spectacle of Mr Abbott trying to save his job and other people in his own party, the Liberal Party, tearing Mr Abbott down.”

Opposition frontbencher Michelle Rowland said: “I don’t care who they have as their leader; this is the same mob with the same policies.”

Liberal parliamentary secretary Steven Ciobo denied his colleagues were immersed in leadership chatter, telling ABC Radio: “I have no doubt that Tony Abbott will lead us to the next election.”

Assistant Education Minister Simon Birmingham, a moderate within the Liberal Party, declined to fuel the leadership speculation but described Mr Turnbull as “a great member of the team”.

“We have our challenges in terms of what’s happened around the world with the slowdown in China, with the dropping of iron ore prices — they are of course putting pressure on different things — but jobs growth is still strong and that is fundamental,” Senator Birmingham said.

“Many things are claimed by people at times to be inevitable; I don’t think you can ever say that anything outside of elections and budgets in politics are necessarily inevitable.”

Jo – in all the vast discussions of climate / sea level / temperature variablity etc I rarely see or hear any reference to chaos theory or the work of Edward Lorenz. It seems to me on the face of it that these massively complex systems are as close to totally chaotic as they could be and thwart the best efforts not only of our scientists but also politicians in trying to pin down any sort of definitive argument. Do you think there is a reason behind this – perhaps we are attempting to frame arguments in terms more easily or comparatively understood by the layman?

19 Feb 2015: The Australian Climate Sceptics: Lord Monckton and the push to get rid of PM Abbott
An extract from Lord Monckton’s presentation:

“David King was asked whether all the nations of the world were now, in principle, ready to sign their people’s rights away in such a treaty. Yes, but there are two standouts. One is Canada. But don’t worry about Canada. They’ve got an election in the Spring of 2015 and we and the UN will make sure the present government is removed. He was quite blunt about it.

“The other hold out is Australia. And Australia we can’t do anything about because Tony Abbott is in office until after the December 2015 conference. So that means you all have to guard Tony Abbott’s back. Because the Turnbull faction, in conjunction with the UN, will be doing their absolute level best to remove your elected Prime Minister from office before the end of his term and , in particular, before the end of 2015, so that they can get 100% wall-to-wall Marxist agreement. They do not want any stand-outs. And the most likely stand-out at the moment is Australia. So look after him.”

given Tony Abbott has been attacked mercilessly by the MSM for defending coal as being “good for humanity”, especially by ABC and Fairfax, it was strange timing to see Fairfax’s AFR publish the following today, particularly as it had already been reported that Turnbull would announce his challenge at the Press Club:

14 Sept: AFR: Greg Evans: Coal remains best solution to energy poverty
It is good news for hundreds of millions of people in Asia who still have limited or no access to power…
    (link in Unthreaded comments)

11 Sept: Daily Telegraph: Simon Benson: Tony Abbott has been fed to the lions
The question is whether it will be soon enough for some in the Coalition party room, from where chatter is once again focused on the intentions of Malcolm Turnbull.
In particular a Press Club speech he is scheduled to deliver three days after the September 19 Canning by-election — straight after a Coalition party room meeting.
The speculation is Turnbull isn’t doing it to talk about the NBN. There has even been a suggestion that he will announce he is resigning to go to the back bench in a Rudd style campaign to re-ignite his leadership ambitions. Of course, he could also be planning to talk about the NBN.
What is not in doubt among his colleagues is that Turnbull will at some stage challenge Abbott for the leadership — this time properly…

Very timely reminder from Pat there.

Not all UN diplomacy is an unsubtle as on Global Warming. Just who in the Party Room is playing to their tune, wittingly or otherwise.

Only the people should decide on Abbott’s leadership, who they elected. Not a bunch of weak-knee’d plotting Pollies .

On that other obstacle to UN hegemony: Are the governing Conservatives in Canada pulling ahead in the latest pre-election poll, at the expense of lefty Liberals ?

according to the leftist Nanos polling group and the MSM, it’s a 3 way tie. Hardly, Canadians are not impressed by this nonsense and I predict a second conservative majority (perhaps a small one but still a majority). No sane people want either the corrupt liberals or the NDP (in the pockets of the big 3 unions) to get their hands on the keys to the till.

Sea Levels Dropped 1.2 metres from a point about 2,000 years ago. See the harbour at Ephesus.

To Geologists this “drop in sea levels” is not a secret, it is a well known part of the sea level history that took place after the last ice age ended.

It has been carefully given the deep six and buried out of sight by the AGW mafia.

Here in Newcastle, Geologists point to the beautiful rock platforms that are to be seen in the coastline from Newcastle to Redhead.

These were cut by wave action dragging rocks , pebbles and sand back and forth from several thousand years before the latest drop of about 1.2 metres.

The cries of “we’ll be swamped” by the Warmer crew deliberately and arrogantly ignore input from specialists

in geology just as they have done with the specialist input from physicists, chemists, biologists and

engineers to name a few groups whose specific knowledge of the CO2 – Warming claim has been “Inconvenient”.

Against this background of sea level movement the claims of the catastrophists look rather stupid or perhaps

    more accurately, highly manipulative.

The CAGW theme has created great wealth and financial advantage for believers and manipulators of this

“scheme” but has set almost a billion people in Europe and the English speaking world onto a path of tax

slavery, wasted research effort and outright theft of public funds.

History will not be kind to the Global Warming movement as the cost in chasing this monster into a dark,

    blind alley has been enormous.

It is not over yet until the leaders have been tried, convicted and publicly held up to the ridicule they deserve.

apologies, but just realised Turnbull’s Press Club speech has not taken place yet. got my dates mixed up.
it was Hartcher who wrote it could happen as soon as Parliament resumed:

SMH: Peter Hartcher: Canning byelection: win can’t save Prime Minister Tony Abbott from leadership challenge
Some of Malcolm Turnbull’s advocates in the party are urging him to challenge Abbott for the leadership this week when Parliament resumes, even though the government is still in the midst of campaigning for Canning.
A principal reason? They worry that Abbott might call an early election to head off any internal challenge…

    A 1mm sea-level rise,
Should not cause shock and surprise,
    As it happens each year,
    With nothing to fear,
    From alarmism’s doom-laden cries.

It’s very interesting that back in February there was a LOT of chatter about Abbott needing to be removed before Paris. My guess is that this is it! I have already written to my member and will send one off to the QLD Lib senators later tonight.

Folks, even you lurkers out there, write to your local member and senators, make the point that you will NEVER vote for a Liberal Party that has Malcolm Turnbull as leader ever since the ETS thing where Mal got tossed out. I also made the point that I personally sent mathematical proof of the stupidity of global warming action to Malcolm and was ignored, which proves him mathematically inept and ignorant.

The key indicator as to whether or not the planet’s climate is cooling, is the volume of sea-ice. It would seem it is increasing at both poles, thus the climate must be cooling.
On the other hand,Glacial Ice should be decreasing as the Solar induced orbital ‘Dry Cycle’hierarchies take prominence – and precipitation decreases.(Glacial ice depends on snowfall.)
These factors also influence temperature fluctuations and sea levels.
Thus, the global climate is both cooling and getting drier.

Global sea level is rising at around 3mm a year, not 1mm a year.

The real cause of rising sea levels is actually ‘taxpayer handouts’ to islanders.

Only just saw this post tonight. Damn day job always gets in the way of more interesting pursuits. I was surprised to see a familiar graph on this blog, so thank you for that. Now to the clearly more topical subject.

I still cannot believe that so many of my friends and family (including my wife) still get sucked in to the MSM misinformation. Tony Abbott has suffered a total and complete character assassination. The ease at which most of the public has been brainwashed is truly astounding. I am disheartened as others here are too.

Where on earth do we all go to from here?
    RGB from Oz.
